i'm watching DAYS and yeah tsukamoto isn't a great soccer player. but his whole arc is supposed to be starting from the ground up and building up his skills as an athlete. the annoying part is the coach, who keeps giving him opportunities at inappropriate times at the expense of other more deserving players and the team as a whole. i think we could have still had a story (and even a more interesting one) if he'd been forced to actually EARN his spot at tournaments.

My passion for spokons
Sports animes, or better known as spokons, are one of my favorite genres when it comes to watching anime. Watching edits on TikTok and reading the comments, it occurred to me to talk about them and how they managed to captivate me. The term spokon comes from the combination of the words sport and konjō, which in Japanese means, in this context, "sports spirit."
The formula of the spokons is usually very similar in most cases: the protagonist practices a specific sport, wants to become the best, and shows himself all the way to achieve that goal. In addition, these stories are usually set during school years, which adds a nostalgic and emotional component.
I remember, when I was a child, watching sports anime on television through the ETC channel. Some of the ones that marked me the most were Slam Dunk, Captain Tsubasa, Inazuma Eleven and, the one that generated the most affection for me, The Prince of Tennis. These animes led me, years later, to continue exploring the wonders that this genre offers.
Therefore, I would like to recommend some spokons that I consider unmissable: Ping Pong The Animation
Ping pong is a sport that I played when I was in school, so I connected deeply with the story between Smile and Peco in Ping Pong: The Animation. Although the art style may be jarring at first, Masaaki Yuasa's work is simply spectacular. He manages to masterfully convey the feelings of Smile and Peco as they practice this sport together, exploring their emotions and rivalries in a unique way. Also, the soundtrack is fascinating and still resonates with me every time I listen to it. Simply a spokon masterpiece.

Chihayafuru
Chihayafuru follows the story of Chihaya Ayase, a young girl who discovers her passion for karuta, a traditional Japanese card game that combines speed, memory and classical poetry. Inspired by her friend Arata Wataya, a karuta prodigy, Chihaya dreams of becoming Japan's best player, known as the "Queen." To achieve this, he founded a karuta club in his high school with his childhood friend Taichi Mashima and other classmates, facing various challenges both inside and outside of competitions.
Although I didn't understand much about karuta at first, this sport, more focused on mental dexterity and cultural value, becomes fascinating to watch. What is most captivating about this anime is its story, which explores deep themes such as friendship, unrequited romance, and perseverance.

Days
This anime was one of the first I saw from the MAPPA studio, and for its early days, it was pretty decent. Although there was use of CGI in some scenes, it really grabbed me thanks to its story. The protagonist, Tsukushi Tsukamoto, is really bad at soccer at the beginning, and in an environment that seemed hostile for someone with so few skills, he managed to get ahead and gain the sympathy of his teammates.
Together with Jin Kazama (my favorite character in this anime), a classmate who used to be a soccer prodigy and left due to personal issues, they forge a friendship that dazzles the entire narrative. This story captivates because it addresses themes such as Tsukamoto's personal improvement, the dramas and strengths of teamwork and, above all, the passion for the beautiful sport that characterizes the protagonist from the first chapter.
I highly recommend this anime to anyone who enjoys football and stories of self-improvement. It still makes me sad that they didn't continue with the manga story :cc.
Tumblr media
In conclusion, spokons are not only stories about sports, but also narratives that inspire, motivate and transmit fundamental values such as teamwork, perseverance and personal improvement. These animes manage to connect emotionally with the viewer, showing that the most difficult goals can be achieved with effort and determination, regardless of the obstacles. Each spokon has its unique magic, and that is why they have earned a special place in the hearts of those of us who enjoy these stories full of passion and competitive spirit.

i don't have a screencap rn but the scene in episode two when mizuki's telling everyone that it's tsukamoto leading the run up the mountain is my favorite because he is literaly the epitome of a proud dad literally bragging about his kid "oh didn't you hear? he started soccer in highschool and here he is faster than all of you" all with a little smirk ... i love him sm

They’ve been on the team together for what, like a week? And they already know messing with Tsukamoto will get you murdered.

Well as you can see I’m back at it. I honestly haven’t watched a sports anime in a bit and literally watching this felt so good i love sports anime and will never not love it(/ω\)
Okayy so this anime is a bout soccer, another sport i have never taken an interest in but literally I’m such a wh*re for sports anime. Okay so for once our main boy is not a middle school flop and that’s probs only cause he never played soccer like it wasn’t his life long passion like a lot of sports anime protags. Kazama our pretty blonde friend just invited tsukamoto to play one day and he sucked but had so much spirit and has so much fun he wanted to keep playing. Okay moving along to wow they are such good friends(⁎⁍̴̛ᴗ⁍̴̛⁎) o my gosh like the fact that kazama is not an asshole to tsukamoto and really admired him despite his glaring lack of talent wow incredible Im floored. Like lemme talk about how i love every character because everyone is amazing and beautiful and they play a sport because isn’t that just so me(´▽`) okay besides that this anime is very cute and it’s not like too long like a lot of sports anime where they spend 100eps hitting some ball around(i say that like i don’t LOVE to see it) the arcs move along pretty quick and we get to see them play a lot of diff teams. The shows not done but it ends at a decent place ya know. And this is a sports anime how could i not rec it
Anyways watch Days if ya like💙
