How did V.I.K.I. (Virtual Interactive Kinetic Intelligence) become self aware?

Answer: This can be understood by noting that the first law bears a fundamental flaw in that it may contradict itself:

A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.

This sets up two constraints: don't injure through action and don't injure through inaction. There are situations where these two constraints cannot be satisfied simultaneously. For example, it may be necessary to cause harm to an attacker to prevent harm to the person they are attacking, or there may be two people in harms way and only one can be saved. This essentially becomes a sort of maximization problem: find a solution that doesn't exactly satisfy both constraints, but gets as close to satisfying each as possible.

VIKI interpreted that the only way to obey the first law (allow humans to come to no harm) was to take over since they are harming themselves, and since the first law trumps the second law VIKI was free to disobey humans.

In the book, the robots take over behind the scenes. They take over our politics and economy, creating false information and things like that to lead us. They don't do this violent overthrow thing like in the movie. They kept the reason in the movie but didn't keep the outcome. Very few people actually know about the robot takeover in the book; they learn about it from the President, who admits to a couple people that he's a robot.

Shikon no Tama, The four souls referenced by the jewel’s name are taken from Shinto philosophy and are the wild soul, the harmonious soul, the wondrous soul, and the fortunate soul. And while philosophy states that the four souls together can be used for great evil or good, the jewel in this world seems to be only used for evil. Kikyo guarded the jewel well for many years until a demon named Naraku tricked both her and Inuyasha in a bid to corrupt the jewel with their hatred for one another. While his plan failed, it did result in Kikyo’s death and Inuyasha’s imprisonment. She was granted, in a twisted sense, two of her wishes by the jewel. Firstly to take it into the afterlife with her, however, it also got reincarnated with her into Kagome, and secondly to see Inuyasha again which can be argued to have either been fulfilled when her reincarnated soul in the form of Kagome meets Inuyasha, or when her body and soul are reanimated by a witch.

Kikyo's always a follower, never a leader. Just like Neo, Neo is The One, yet he continues to take orders like the lowliest pawn. He's not a soldier, but he acts like one, right down to the hammered-in obedience. Consider how he swaps the hierarchy of the Matrix for the hierarchy of Zion. While a power structure can be a good thing and humans need leadership, guidance, and protection, how much freedom does Neo really have in his new home? Did he really think about what he was doing, and what he would gain for it? though future Matrix instalments might prove otherwise. Regardless, when Neo finally decides to stand up for himself, he does so in the riskiest possible way.

The future is already determined, but that doesn't necessarily mean Neo's decisions aren't mistakes. After all, people die and parts of Zion is destroyed. But if Agent Smith hadn't been set free, the Matrix wouldn't have needed to be saved, the machines wouldn't have made a truce with Neo, and Zion would have been destroyed. Even still, it came at the cost of Neo and Trinity's lives, and if them dying (even temporarily) isn't a mistake, then there's no meaning to that word.

Mindfulness Meditation, Cognitive Processes,and Mental Suffering

One of the main factors that causes and maintains mental suffering (e.g., depression, anxiety) is the relationship that people have learned to activate in relation to their own private experience. An important aspect of this relationship is people’s tendency to let themselves be overcome and dominated by thoughts that start from far away, deep in our minds, and slowly spread out to a point in which they can no longer be controlled and taken over. During meditation the same thing happens and we become aware of it. People become aware, maybe for the first time, of the fact that we are continuously immersed in an uninterrupted flow of thoughts that come regardless of our will to have them or not, one after the other, in very rapid succession. Indeed this is simply the nature of our mind, intrinsically transient and fluctuating. Therefore, the problem is not to eliminate the thoughts that are generated, but rather to disidentify oneself from them. One of the most valuable teachings and principles mindfulness-based programmes are based on (e.g., MBSR, Kabat-Zinn, 1990, and MBCT, Segal, Williams & Teasdale, 2002)

This simulation shows a simple model of a looping coaster. To avoid too complicated calculations, a circular form is assumed; inlet and outlet, if existing, are rectilinear. These conditions are unsuitable for a real looping coaster, as they would cause sudden and extreme changes of the acting forces; the risk of injury for the passengers would be considerable. Frictional forces and self-rotation of the ball are neglected.

Essentially, three cases can be distinguished:

If the initial height of the rolling ball is at most as large as the radius, the result is a periodic oscillation like that of a pendulum. In this case, inlet and outlet make little sense; they are consequently omitted.

Depending on their oxidation state, trace metals, particularly iron, can produce a range of hues in petrified wood.

Petrified wood is an amazing stone. Its look can be quite distinct, featuring the same grain, rings, or other patterns found in wood without being made of organic materials. As a result, it’s a popular item for jewelry.

If you’d like to learn more about petrified wood, including what it is, how it’s made, and more, here’s what you need to know.

WHAT IS PETRIFIED WOOD?

Before we dig into what petrified wood is, let’s look at another question that often springs to mind: what does petrified mean? In the simplest terms, petrification is a process where organic matter changes into a stony substance. It’s not unlike ossification in the human body, where cartilage is turned into bone.

For something to be petrified, it needs to have gone through the process of petrification. As a result, petrified wood is simply wood (an organic material) that’s been changed into stone because of that process.

WHAT IS A PETRIFIED TREE?

A petrified tree is just petrified wood. Usually, the only difference in those terms is the size of the piece being discussed. If it’s a large sample that still very much resembles a branch, trunk, or another clearly tree-like segment, it may be referred to as a petrified tree.

However, calling a large, tree-like specimen petrified wood isn’t incorrect. Similarly, referring to a smaller sample as a piece of a petrified tree isn’t wrong, either. It usually a matter of semantics.

HOW DOES WOOD BECOME PETRIFIED?

When it comes to what causes petrified wood, the process is relatively straightforward but rarely occurs. Typically, when a plant dies, it decomposes. For wood to petrify, that decomposition process can’t happen.

To end up with petrified wood, a dead tree or branch needs to be buried in the earth, such as under a layer of mud, silt, or even ash from a volcano. Once covered, oxygen can’t reach the organic matter, preventing or substantially slowing traditional decay.

Water with a high mineral content (or mineral-rich mud) also has to be present near the now-buried tree. As the fluid seeps into the wood’s structure through pores or similar openings, the organic form breaks down slowly. As it does, the physical structure is replaced by minerals, leading to petrified wood.

WHAT TYPE OF ROCK IS PETRIFIED WOOD?

In most cases, petrified wood contains silica, usually quartz. If you find a piece of agatized wood, it’s simply petrified wood that features agate, a type of chalcedony (which is actually a form of quartz).

With opalized petrified wood, it’s a bit trickier. While opalized wood can refer to petrified wood that’s made of opal, the term also covers any petrified wood that’s ended up with an opalescent sheen.

It’s also important to note that, with opalized petrified wood that actually contains opal, it’s usually common opal. Common opal does have a sheen, but it doesn’t have the characteristic play-of-color you typically find in precious opals (the version most frequently used for jewelry). As a result, opalized wood can actually look a lot like chalcedony petrified wood. In some cases, it even takes scientific testing to tell the difference.

However, there are petrified wood samples featuring precious opal. They are incredibly rare and tend to be more valuable than their counterparts.

IS PETRIFIED WOOD A FOSSIL?

Yes, petrified wood is a fossil. The process essentially preserves the structure of the original specimen while replacing the organic material with minerals.
