New Zealand 2022/23
4th- 7th January
After a great time on the Southlands it was time to drive back to Queenstown enjoying a pleasant lunch stop en route. In the afternoon Lydia took us on the steep drive up to the top of the Remarkable Mountains which overlook Queenstown and feature a number of ski runs. We got a bit concerned half way up when the fuel gauge went into a steep decline before telling us we were empty! We carried on using fumes only in the hope that the descent would be ok.
Once we got to the top, with patches of snow still lying on the highest slopes, we went even further up the mountain to Lake Alta. Fortunately I had remembered to bring my walking poles so was able turbo charge my somewhat previous sluggish performance on earlier mountains and hills! Great views around the lake before getting back in the car and praying that we made it to the petrol station at the bottom of the hill - we did!
On Thursday we went with Ellie and Lydia into Queenstown where we spent the morning pottering around the shops, cafes, and parks before boarding TSS Earnslaw (the oldest steamship in the Southern Hemisphere) for a cruise on the lake, which was really interesting and good fun. In the evening we enjoyed a superb meal of roast lamb with Andrew’s brother and family joining us.
On Friday we visited Arrowtown, an old Chinese gold mining settlement, just outside Queenstown that has been developed into a bit of a tourist centre with plenty of shops and places to eat. After a post lunch walk we moved on to the lakeside close to Andrew’s parents house where Lydia and Ellie went paddle boarding and Judith and I took Alfie, Lydia’s recent addition to the family, (he’s a 5 month old dachshund!) on a lakeside walk. In the evening we played ‘glow in the dark mini golf’ before a farewell meal with Andrew and Lydia at a very nice restaurant in Queenstown.
We are now back in Auckland for a week before flying to Sydney next Saturday. Ellie is going to be at work so we are being let loose on our own to explore the Auckland area which I’m sure will be great fun.

Queenstown
Queenstown is the adventure capital of the world, which was perfect for our adrenaline junkies.
We did spend a lot of time enjoying the view with boats and airplanes from our Airbnb.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Our first Milford Sound flight was canceled due to weather, so we went with our backup plan of canyon jetting at the Shotover River. The boys LOVED IT. Also, what a place to throw rocks...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some magic tricks for extra entertainment.
Tumblr media
We went to an indoor climbing gym on a rainy day. Scott and I couldn't just sit and watch...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Scotty and I summited the Queenstown hill for a sunset hike. I felt my dad in those sunbeams.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then our Luge morning.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Followed by an afternoon Steamboat trip on the TSS Earnslaw to a farm complete with afternoon tea for both us and the animals!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And our final day was the long-anticipated flight over the southern alps to a cruise on Milford Sound. Carson took a badly-needed, but VERY expensive nap.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The cruise was beautiful and included some seals on the rocks.

One last dinner together.
Tumblr media
The downtown area was such a cool spot with the water and a great playground. We could have spent a lot more time down there if we had been there longer.
Tumblr media
To keep our lives as interesting as always, Carson broke him arm the day after we got home. All thanks to wet crocs. I knew the crocs would get the best of me. Althoug, he was the happiest I've seen him in a long time after spending 3 hours alone with me in the ER!

Today we learned how to use clipping masks in photoshop. We started off by messing around with different layers and changing around the contents of the layers.
Tumblr media
Next we edited this picture of the TSS Earnslaw by created a clipping mask of the ship in order to create a copy of it make adjustments to it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next we used a marque tool to select the orange on the top right of this image and made a clipping mask of it and adjusted it to give it this grey look. The same was done to the orang on the right and a section of the pineapple.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next we used the Bezier curve tool so select the top 5 leaves of this plant and used it as a clipping mask. I adjusted them by using the colour correction tool to give it this to make them look desaturated and dry.

Lastly, we grabbed this picture of a humming bird and made a clipping mask to separate it from the background. After doing this the bird lost the motion blur effect it had so we selected the edge of its wing and used the smudge tool to give it motion again. Then we used the brush tool to darken the edges of the hummingbird so it'll fit in with its new background. We then finished it off by dragging it to the new background.

The TSS Earnslaw is a 1912 Edwardian twin screw steamer based at Lake Wakatipu in New Zealand. It is one of the oldest tourist attractions in Central Otago, and the only remaining commercial passenger-carrying coal-fired steamship in the southern hemisphere
