Okay. This is a topic I’m extremely normal about (lying).
Loneliness is a theme in all of the TSP games, but it actually evolves throughout each of them.
The first game, the Half-Life 2 mod, is by far the loneliest of them all. There’s just Stanley, The Narrator, Mariella and The Curator. The halls are cramped, narrow, and dimly lit.
The HL2 Mod is a house that’s no longer a home, musty and claustrophobic. It’s more isolation than loneliness.
The second, the TSP demo, is less so. There’s evidence that people were here - papers on the floor, a spilled mug, etc. . But the loneliness is less suffocating because The Narrator is constantly trying to show you these cool new gameplay mechanics (in my mind he’s trying to distract himself from the fact that everyone has gone missing) and is taking you through so many different locations and giving you so many things to do.
The Demo is when you were a kid on a school trip to a museum or expo, and you got separated from the group.
The 2013 HD Remaster is a soft, looming loneliness - the documents left strewn about, the mugs left on desks, computers left open; people were here not too long ago. You get a couple phone calls from your wife, too. In this game, we have Stanley, The Narrator, Mariella, The Curator, Stanley’s Wife, the second Stanley and the Line™️ - there’s also evidence that 432 is still up and about, as a box labelled for them disappears after you leave the phone room in the Not Stanley Ending. Far more populated, yes, but only limited to certain endings and paths you can take.
(Also, to answer your question, it’s confirmed in a Reddit AMA: that’s another Stanley, but he considers you to be the “other Stanley”.)
The 2013 HD Remaster is arriving at an event several hours too late.
TSPUD, when I first played it, blew me away, and continues to do so, because unlike the previous games…it’s so alive.
You walk into the Memory Zone for the first time, and there’s birds. Fucking birds! Real animals! Do you have any idea how much that shocked me? In the Elevator Ending, there’s a rat on one of the chairs.
The reviews in the Skip Button Ending, Settings Person greeting you every time you boot up the game, the Bucket Tape Ending, the man that follows you, the second Stanley, the notes you get from your loved ones in the elevator ending (from Stanley’s wife, from his coworkers, you even get a drawing made by Stanley’s child!), the voice that promotes TSPUD in the New Content Ending, the child variant of the previous one, the voice that sings the Good Job, You Made It To The Bottom Of The Mind Control Facility, Well Done song, the chanting behind the mural in the Bucket Museum Ending, the cars zooming by in the release trailer…
It’s full of life!
It’s just beyond a wall, or a door. But it’s there. And whoever’s just beyond that wall loves you.
TSPUD is when you fall asleep at a party as a child, and you’re carried to your bedroom, and you can hear the muffled sounds of the party continuing on downstairs. It’s still there.
It’s just beyond that door.
thing about the stanley parable
the game is determined not to show you another living creature. you never see the narrator’s face. he laughs at you when you see that your wife is a lifeless mannequin. the crowds in the 3 ending are faceless. ‘mariella’ is an unmoving character model in an ending that you can’t interact with. all your friends are inanimate objects that the narrator is determined to personify.
it creates an amazing feeling of loneliness. my goal, when playing this game, became not to find the ‘true’ ending or break the game, but to find someone living, someone real, someone that isnt a bucket that the narrator speaks for to make this world less lonely.
the only time you do see someone else, a moving person, then, is the rare occasion in which you can see someone walking past one of the office windows. and it’s just stanley’s character model, and you don’t get to interact with them. you get to watch them disappear.
this did not quell my loneliness. it gave me UTTER FEAR. what does this mean? are timelines converging? does this represent the endless cycle, the ‘we’ve been here before’ of it all? does the narrator have another stanley? or, more likely, is it something that he, or the game’s creators, threw in to taunt us? you want someone to talk to, here’s a glimpse, and it’ll only give you more questions. there is no comfort, there is no closure. only a glimpse of something. it is unattainable and it is terrifying. stanley is alone. stanley is alone.

The Narrator(s) : Part 1
Gmod Narrator: The Original -Strong Dad™ vibes when he’s done with Stanley’s bs or for his safety -Would gladly give random wiki facts about sharks, and invest into art instead of talking about Stanley constantly -Subpar with interior design, and mediocre with sound mixing -[Door Sound] -Rough-draft mode with no subtleties on Stanley’s insecurities, personal details regarding himself and his boss -Calls Stanley “sport”, “kid”, and positively encouraging him in rare moments -However like a Dad™, “punishments” for derailing the story is to straight up kill Stanley -Not that great with a lot of things, but put Stanley first before anything else; Most of the time “And for now, I’ll be happy to be the destination instead of the journey. But, only for now.” Demonstration Narrator: Version 2.0 -A bit miffed that the original story was confusing, and contradictory to most players -Brings the game to the player, and definitely not for the real world money -Terrible at time management -Hums like a dork when he’s bored -Can only give three compliments, all produced by one entire department  -Accidently makes the player run into a brick wall -Let’s get a machine that can tell you whether or not you’re in a demonstration, or in a demonstration within another demonstration :) -Will call the player a pervert, no matter what button you press -Created the “Mug in the trash can” game, because he can’t accept the demo to be over so suddenly -Hates that the main game would have more than one ending -Everything, even the boxes, are not useless props -Makes weird word association games, and dramatic novel reading -List off more side effects about the demo than a prescription commercial -If you’re experiencing one or more of those side effects, just dance  -It was only supposed to be eight minutes. It was only supposed to be eight minutes. It was only supposed to be eight minutes -EIGHT - 100% proves that “video games can make you cry” at the end “Freedom, we were free. There was nothing to think. Nothing to know. Simply us, in that moment. Wasn’t it beautiful? Wasn’t that moment so singularly, piercingly beautiful? We were free...” Dota Narrator: The Announcer -Getting into the competitive side of gaming outside of the Parable, and yet can be late to the matches -Canonically drinks when the player does anything stupid, like getting killed constantly -Plays the electric guitar for fun -Not great with gaming strategics, and half of the time doesn’t even know what the game is about -Harnesses his inner Gmod Narrator by silently judging the player’s decisions -References Stanley spectating, but not playing Dota occasionally -Gets a bit too personal about his existence, supposed heartbreak, life and death, and ridiculing everyone else’s life choices -Struggles with gaming lingo, and would either use the gaming guide or ask Stanley about them with mixed results -It’s time for DIGITAL SPORTS -Only allowed to say one curse word -Releases his homicidal side through video game characters being slaughtered, and players getting frustrated with anything “Welcome to the end of Dota, let’s commemorate with a nice long beep.”
Dungeons 2 & 3 Narrator: Narratus the Narrator -Doesn’t get paid enough to get bossed by an antagonist telling him how he should be doing his job -But, would gladly kill anyone or mildly inconvenience anyone who even thinks about taking his job as a Narrator -On occasion, will side with the antagonist when it comes to game mechanics delaying the game; And, violence -Spitefully wishes he could do his job with actual professionals for once -Gets vietnam flashbacks about the electrical shocks and/or more DLCs -Has an adorable, but terrifying laugh -Only allowed a few curse words in beginning, so not to trigger the ESRB ratings -Violence isn’t the answer to everything, except this genre -Isn’t great with organization, and gets some scripts mixed up from time to time -No filter for the sass, belittling, or cursing the player and the game mechanics ”END! And, this time it’s for real!” Remastered HD Narrator: The Hard Reset -An amalgamation of both Gmod and Demo Narrators with an identity crisis -Has the unfortunate habit of getting wrapped up in situations he had little or no power over  -Disregarded the demo’s #1 rule regarding the past: “Just ignore it, cause it doesn’t exist” -Inherits the Gmod Narrator’s weakness with closed doors -Slightly abandons the real meaning in the original game about why Stanley is good at puzzles, and critical thinking -Takes the “ride or die” mentality to a whole new level -Studied thousand of tables as a hobby to find the perfect one for the serious room, like Stanley’s obsessive button pushing; And, denies it -Likes space, fire, tables, new age music, writing limericks, playing the acoustic guitar, and making Stanley uncomfortable; All in that order -Weaknesses: Narrative contradictions, The Adventure Line, open-ended games, doors, having no control, cursing, losing Stanley physically or mentally, and the mere thought of looking through his table notes -Making everyone confused whether or not he’s a human, a voice in Stanley’s head, an nigh-omnipotent powerful being, or a robot “That's all right. I'll wait for you to decide what's the right thing to do. Take as much time as you need.“

[HD Remaster Narrator]
A Narrator specific to the Original Stanley Parable from 2013.
Tumblr media
(For some lore explanations/ramble, and an extra drawing check under the cut!)
OK SO HERES SOME LORE FOR VERGIL AND HOW HE EXISTS WHEN VIRGIL IS RIGHT THERE BUCKLE IN EVERYBODY
Because TSPUD contains the everything from the original game (with the exception of the serious room ending) inside it, it's standalone in that it doesn't require you to have the original game in order to understand the story.
Virgil, the Brown Jacket, white swooped Narrator Ive been drawing is the narrator of TSPUD.
And since TSPUD is made in Unity, he experiences things differently. He's able to change his design more, He doesnt need a mic and speaker to be heard in the game, When stanley goes inactive for a while, the office starts to get cold, and has been given an office just out of bounds for him to work from if he so chooses.
However, because of this, the TSP 2013 HD Remaster doesn't have TSPUD content, and is all in source.
This is Vergil's Parable. He will experience everything in the base game and the serious room. He won't ever experience TSPUD content, and is bound to source engine rules (like needing a speaker/item for his voice to come from in order to be heard, this is why he has a mic while Virgil doesnt.)
Vergils design also comes from the picture of the boss in the boss' office. His design choices are more limited in this version but he keeps the suit in order to be more professional looking. Contrast to Virgil, whos had a bit of time to settle with the base game, so when sequel content comes in, hes reminiscing and more casual somewhat.
however, this doesnt mean Vergil is a more eviler version of Virgil. more malicious yes, but hes still just as silly as Virgil.
(and yes, with this lore means the TSP Demo and the original Half Life 2 mod have their own special narrator. ive got a rough idea of their designs atm of their designs so heres a teaser ig aksjdh)
Tumblr media
anywho, thank you for reading all my ramblings, heres a little silly drawing:

(TSP: Ultra Deluxe) Stanley: *Using only light mode tabs in a dark office*  The Narrator: *Shook af* Stanley no longer fears the pain...He craves it.
