Taps run dry in Madibeng village once again

Hundreds of Itireleng village residents depend on one communal tank for water

Barely a year after water was restored to Itireleng village in Madibeng, North West Province, taps have run dry. After nine months without water, supply was restored in the village in July last year. However, the water supply only lasted until May this year.

Resident Marry Malefathlo said water was supplied from a large tank, which was filled by a water truck once a week, on a Friday.

“You spend the whole week without water and have to wait for another Friday. We can’t wash laundry or clean our houses. We are unhappy. We are pleading with the municipality to give us running water,” said Malefathlo.

She said the water supplied by the water truck was “brown in colour”.

Following deaths from an outbreak of cholera in Hammanskraal, which was similarly supplied by water trucks, she was scared of an outbreak of the disease in Itireleng.

She said the desperate need for water meant fights sometimes broke out when the water truck arrived.

“On Friday, as old as I am, I have to run with a wheelbarrow to the tank before the water finishes,” she said.

According to residents, the single tank serves about 300 people.

Resident Sesi Mafhungo said she never thought they would have to fight over water in 2023.

“We make long queues here on Fridays just to access water. It’s a painful sight. There are just too many people dependent on this one Jojo tank and it’s not okay,” said Mafhungo.

She said the municipality had promised to restore tap water but nothing had happened.

In June last year, over 200 residents of Hebron, within which Itireleng village is situated, protested over the lack of water. Madibeng Mayor Douglas Maimane told furious protesters that the embattled municipality was struggling to pay its water debt to the City of Tshwane.

Madibeng Local Municipality spokesperson Tumelo Tshabalala said Itireleng village is supplied with water from the City of Tshwane. He said illegal connections on the main pipeline supplying the reservoir for Itireleng village result in higher lying areas “not getting water”.

Tshabalala said water can only be restored once illegal connections have been removed. Questions as to the debt Madibeng owed the City of Tshwane for water provision were not answered.

Angry SA locals chase away mayor as cholera cases rise

Irate South Africans chased away a mayor on Monday, blaming him for failing to provide clean water as deaths from cholera rose to 15 in Gauteng, the country's most populous province. Tshwane City Mayor Cilliers Brink was expected to join officials from the national government to assess the situation in the wake of the cholera outbreak in the area. But tempers flared outside the Jubilee District Hospital in Hammanskraal area as angry residents confronted him, demanding clean water, local media reported. The disgruntled residents ambushed cars outside the hospital, forcing the mayor off the premises. They accused him of not taking their health seriously. The health department in Gauteng province declared a cholera outbreak on Sunday in Hammanskraal, north of capital Pretoria. Almost 100 people have been to hospital, and 37 have been admitted to wards, the city government said on Monday, warning residents of Hammanskraal and surrounding areas not to drink tap water. East of Tshwane in Gauteng, South Africa is the spectacular Mooikloof Heights home designed by Nico van der Meulen Architects which is situated on a north sloping 15000sq.m. site. This home is approached from the north where it is completely transparent, but as the driveway curves around the west side it becomes a collection of stacked rusted boxes without any openings.

Due to the size of the site, the house could be stretched to extend to nearly 85m from east to west: The north elevation is totally glazed across the three storeys with deeply recessed glazing to create sun control.

The house is clad with natural stone and rusted steel panels framing openings in the façade. These materials speak to the taste of the client, as well as the environment.

The soil is composed of deep slate rock which had to be excavated and used for the gabion walls or crushed and covered with topsoil to create the garden. The sloping landscape was reduced to different terraces, creating a stepped landscape with a large retaining pond on the lowest level.

Mooikloof Heights was designed in such a way that the feeling of indoor-outdoor living was prominent from almost every space in the house, lending itself to spectacular views. The style of open plan living Is evident throughout the house. The flow of the ground living and entertainment areas blend and combine into each other and create a connectedness throughout house.

The exposed steel beams, glass and stone cladding creates a symphony of textures combined with rusting steel walls and screed floors. The staircase cantilevers out of a massive stone wall with double storey glass to the west protected from the sun by steel louvres and an indigenous tree.

A few steps down you are presented with a choice of either the formal lounge or the informal family and dining room flowing out onto the lanai, while the open plan kitchen and breakfast room are just past the jacuzzi. Another sculpture by Regardt van der Meulen sits on a perch above the family room, staring across the double volume space.

The lanai is a vast space suited to the Highveld lifestyle, incorporating a bar/ barbeque, dining area and lounge, adjacent to the jacuzzi and pool.

The view from the whole house to the north is breath taking, covering the valley down to foot of the hill where Mooikloof Equestrian estate is situated and the whole hill across the extensive garden and the large reflecting pond.

The home was designed by Nico and Werner van der Meulen of Nico van der Meulen Architects with interiors by their interior design company, M Square Lifestyle Design. Furniture and accessories were supplied by M Square Lifestyle Necessities.
