WIP - Château de Bon-Hôtel
@denerdnr shared this build, partially furnished, and included some of their custom re-colours, leaving a lot to my own imagination and taste.
I have finished the ground floor, and wanted to share here with this post.
My builds are off the grid, playing ~the Victorian era - so I updated all the lighting to be off the grid etc.
I also haven't got around to learning how to make my own re-colours just yet - I'd like to try match my drawing room furniture a bit better!
Once I've finished the upper stories, I will be adding a barn so I can have a cow for milk, llamas for wool, and chickens for eggs.
On the next floor up, we'll have some bedrooms, rooms for music and relaxing as a family, then above that I'll build a ballroom and bar area, then in the attic will be staff quarters.
Château de Bon-Hôtel (Ligny-le-Ribault)
I discovered this château through an Instagram post about abandoned residences and immediately fell in love. I wanted to build it for a long time, but the rush of life stopped me. I finally did it! Hope you like it! Georges Dupré de Saint Maur, general councilor of the canton of La Ferté-Saint-Aubin and mayor of Ligny-le-Ribault, had the château built between 1875 and 1882. The building was initially designed to be a place for social receptions and more particularly a hunting meeting place. In 1923, the château, which at that time belonged to the Poniatowski family, was acquired by the Swiss industrialist Henry Burrus to indulge his passion for horse riding. The château has been listed in the inventory of historical monuments since 1991, but is currently abandoned (unfortunately).
Note: special thanks to @labuenosairesfrancaise who taught me how to make symmetrical curved paths. :)

Mirai's Medieval Activities Add-On
Would you like to make your game a bit harder? Constantly worry that your sims might starve themselves to death? Or just add another touch of realism? If yes, look no further! Those add-ons are guaranteed to turn your TS4 into a survival simulator and give you a decent amount of frustration and stress :P
Here come two little add-ons for MiraiM's Medieval Activities mod. In case you haven't heard of it: it adds a new option under 'Travel' cellphone menu, called - you guessed it - Medieval Activities, which lets your sims pick from a list of rabbithole... well... medieval(ish) activities. While most of them are indeed distinctly medieval, some can be used also in other eras - especially the first one, which makes your sim go to the woods and collect logs. Your sim returns from this rabbithole activity with a bunch of logs in their inventory (plus a tense moodlet and tragic hygiene stats), which can later be sold for a decent amount of money. Unless... You download add-ons which make those logs necessary for using certain objects.
I fell in love with this mod the moment I found it, but was a bit disappointed to see the logs being (optionally) required only for otg stoves and fireplaces - both of which I'm not allowed to use in the iron age. I tried asking the creator if she could make an add-on for campfires as well, only to realise that the last post on her page was written half a year ago, not even by her, and it states that she's in a very bad health condition... And so, after overcoming the initial 'feeling like a total insensitive idiot' phase, I decided to give it a go myself.
There are two add-ons: one combined for campfires, bonfires and grills, and another one for the woodworking table. As for the amount of logs required, I totally made those numbers up, trying to adhere to some basic logic and Mirai's og stove & fireplace requirements:
lighting a campfire: 3 logs
lighting a bonfire: 5 logs (cause bonfires are bigger, right? And the fire seems to last much longer)
adding a log: 1 log
grilling anything: 2 logs
woodworking: requirements vary depending on the size of the craftable; anywhere from 1 log (knifeblock) to 5 logs (bathtub, table)
All has been tested in game, of course, especially the campfire, and oh boy, let me just tell you: this combined with the off the grid and simple living challenges makes every simday a fight for survival. Which sounds pretty darn accurate for pre/protohistorical times, so... Hurray?
Anyway. Have, ehmmm... fun with it and... ehmmm... enjoy.

ABSOLUTELY, 100% requires Mirai's original mod to work. Don't put it in your mods folder if you don't have her Medieval Activities!
A hundred thanks to Mirai for creating such a cool mod in the first place. Sending you all my love and best wishes <3

[Retired] Off-the-Grid Typewriter v.3 (BGC)
January 16, 2024 Edit:
This typewriter is now retired and no longer supported! I haven't played TS4 in a long time and haven't kept up with the updates so certain interactions may not function any more.
This typewriter uses custom tuning. For more information on the tuning process, and a more detailed changelog, see this post.
DL link and wall of text regarding interactions after the cut!
September 15, 2021 Edit: Version 3 is now out! Please replace any previous versions with MadameRiaTypewriterOTGv3. You cannot have both in your game at the same time!
What’s new in version 3:
Freelance writing career should now be fully functional! My testing abilities were not so great when I first made this mod, and I completely missed how the game checks for objective completion. This should be resolved now.
Basically a re-do of the custom tuning, making it much simpler thanks to @ravasheencc‘s help
I can't be the only person with an aspiring author Sim that wants to isolate themselves off-the-grid in a cabin and write novels nonstop, write right? (Actually, I believe this is a Secret Simblr Wish over at @maxismatchccworld, though I’d started working on this before I saw the request)
Colored in @serindipitysims‘s The Historian Palette because it may have been the obvious choice, but it was also the right choice. (Plus two swatches that I was using while I was testing everything, because I'm partial to multiples of 5).
I'm really, really proud of how this typewriter came out! I edited the mesh from the base game Writer's Lore object, and then I went and re-textured about 90% of the darned thing. I even made a custom specular map for it! Let me know if you feel like it's still too shiny!
Теперь переведено на русский язык! Машинка скачать здесь! Спасибо SofiRing!
A big thank you to SofiRing of the Mods Hunters translation group! She reached out to me to let me know that she translated my OTG Typewriter into Russian!
What you can do with this typewriter:
Pretty much every writing interaction (Practice writing, write books, write jokes, compose comedy routines)
Pen Pal Interactions
Freelance Writing Career
Limited Interactions for the Conservationist, Detective, Education, Gardener, Law, Military, Social Media, Style Influencer, Writer Careers (Essentially the same as the Freelance limitations - nothing that would obviously require internet)
Write Dollhouse Story, Practice Typing
Write Love Letter (changed from Write Love Email)
Write About Feelings (changed from Blog About Feelings)
Write Term Papers/Study for University Courses
You can put this typewriter in your inventory and drag it in live mode, but like a laptop, will only place on desks/dining tables.
What you can't do with this typewriter:
Essentially, anything that would only make sense with a screen or internet connection
Go on Vacation/Purchase Property

the reason ts4 has so many challenges dedicated to it is because the game is boring and repetitive otherwise. half the mods (that aren’t porn or drug-related) are for making the game harder. but let me say this:
playing an off-the-grid household has been an endless source of fun for me. learn handiness to upgrade your OTG plumbing and you won’t even notice it’s supposed to suck because it’s as good as expensive on the grid plumbing. relying on books and chess and playing instruments to gain fun instead of using the ol’ reliable method of video gaming. not being able to take any electives in college because you’d need the computer to study for them since they don’t belong to a textbook. trying to see if you can raise your kids to live off the land. using your refrigerators as meal storage instead of grocery storage because grills work OTG.

Off-the-Grid Typewriter WIP
I've wanted a way to just write off-the-grid for a while now, so I'm working on making something for that! I modified the Writer's Lore typewriter to be a functional computer.
I'm not sure if there's a better way to do what I'm doing, but my method requires a bunch of custom tuning, so I need to refine it a little (and retexture it!) before I'll be ready to share the first version. I know a lot of people want variants on this concept, so I'm open to suggestions on what interactions you'd want available/disabled. So far, I've left only the writing/writing-adjacent interactions (like writing jokes, some of the freelance options), but would people want a super-historical-immersion version?

Off-the-Grid Typewriter Tuning Information/Changelog
Because this typewriter required a bunch of custom tuning to make it work off-the-grid, I wanted to make a post specifically detailing the changes for future reference/if I need to update things/for anyone interested. To locate my tuning changes in the object tuning, you can text search for madameria.
Updates for V3 (September 15, 2021):
A huge thanks to Ravasheen and ChippedSim for helping me figure out some things! The freelance careers should work now, and everything is much simpler... because now:
Instead of a bunch of custom tuning for every interaction, there is just the object tuning, that has been given a bypass to the lot power test. It is made to always pass, and means that every other computer interaction will work because it still thinks it’s “powered”.
Updates for V2.1 (April 9, 2021):
Added a Russian translation to the strings table. Thank you to SofiRing of the Mods Hunters group for the translation!
Updates for V2 (March 25, 2021, patch 1.72.28):
Fixed weights for LOD 1. The typewriter should no longer move around when sims use the “mouse”.
The typewriter should now be enabled for live drag, go into Sims’s inventories and storage boxes, and upon selecting “Place in World” Sims should now place the typewriter on a desk/table instead of the floor.
Removed the following Object Definition Component tags:
Func_Computer
Func_Game
Func_Laptop
Func_Lifestyles_Electronic
Func_Programming
Func_VideoGaming
Removing these tags should eliminate the computer interactions that are added by tag instead of being explicitly in the tuning (like the “Change Passwords” interaction that appears for Paranoid Sims)
Changed the broken VFX and audio SFX to the ones used in the Milton Word Processor.
Moved the _FX_repair position
Changed the Eco Lifestyle client state to be default for “Energy Efficient Upgrade Completed”. This way the typewriter shouldn’t count against the Eco NAPs. Unfortunately, I think it will still incur a fine for violating the Good Old Days NAP because it is still recognized as a computer.
Removed the tooltip display test for the Energy Efficient Device state (”+Green Eco Footprint”) to effectively hide that the typewriter has been upgraded. I did this so that it wouldn’t stick out and be anachronistic for historical saves.
Made changes to the Utilities Client States so the typewriter shouldn’t be stealthily consuming power. The base value for Power Consumption is now 0, so the modifiers should be meaningless.
Removed the ECC RAM upgrade interaction.
Original Post (Dec. 20, 2020):
There’s already an off-the-grid tutorial by Zora (link here) which helped a bunch with the function and catalogue tags. Unfortunately, there is no off-the-grid computer, so there wasn’t any OTG computer functionality to replicate. I looked at the tuning, and for nearly every interaction, there is a utility check:
I think that this is a check if the lot has power, which takes into account power generation from things like solar panels and windmills.
After creating a custom Object Tuning (cloned from the game’s computer tuning), I removed all the references to things that wouldn’t make sense on a typewriter (like playing video games or browsing the web). Then I made every interaction that was left its own custom interaction (so it wouldn’t override the regular computer interactions) and removed the utility check. I have no idea if there is a simpler/more efficient way to do this without having it affect every computer, but this is how I made it work.
There is a pretty long list of all the tuning that I changed, but it’s all in the typewriter package. With the exception of the actual Object Tuning, I named each customized Interaction Tuning file with the “madameria:CustomTypewriter_” prefix and left the original interaction name intact so the original tuning should be easy to locate and extract.
I also changed the strings for Blog About Feelings (to Write About Feelings) and Write Love Email (to Write Love Letter).

i sometimes regret getting TS4 eco lifestyle. building and living OTG was fun before it started becoming a requirement to appease the N.A.P.s i can’t repeal because my sim is the only one who lives in the neighborhood and avoid daily fines
and now i get self-conscious about using specific items that enhance the gameplay because it’s made the eco footprint more industrial--but what do you expect me to do for a pack i paid $40 for, disable the mechanics?

UPDATE - 1st floor!
Each bedroom features a functioning chamber pot, and jug/basin for washing, along with some sort of vanity and/or desk for writing.
The nursery includes bassinet/crib/cot for new-borns and infants, as well as a bed for toddlers. There's a changing table and a little bath; as well as a wealth of toys and activities for the little'ns.
The Blue Parlour has a grand piano, balalaika, cello, and chess table; the Yellow Parlour has a harpsichord, flute and oboe, along with a spinning wheel and all needed for knitting and cross-stitch.
If you hadn't guessed, the central hall has a balcony feature that goes all the way up to a sunroof! On this floor, we have a harp, which will beautifully resound up and downstairs; as well as a couple cabinets with porcelain etc.
Château de Bon-Hôtel (Ligny-le-Ribault)

Update - 2nd Floor! Ballroom~
Here's the floorplan, I think I put in way too many chandeliers.... but will see how they go during gameplay. No screenshot of the bathroom because that's boring. The whole floor is VERY extravagant, and I would just love to go here for real 😂
View from the stairs - looking towards the dancefloor
Dancefloor:
Some views of the main bar and seating area - I have a little buffet table with a punch bowl and food can be served here as well.
Some views of the other side where we have just a small bar, but more intimate seating.
Finally, the attic:
The attic is boring, so no individual screenshots, but you can see what's where here:
NOW I am going to put in my barn and enclosed area for the animals, and figure out where I'll put a swimming pool, because I have a mermaid who loves to swim!
