I think the reason they do bond with humans is because of the war. Before the war, eighty or so years was like nothing. You get in your routines, and as long as life wasn't horrible, time flew by.

But I think we can all agree that suffering makes time seem to drag on.

So for people like Megatron, the sedate pace the rest of Cybertron ran on was unbearable. When every day might be your last, when everything hurts because change isn't happening fast enough, every moment counts. And the rest of Cybertron didn't get that.

To them, change was happening fast! Why just last vorn (83 earth years) this new thing got passed blah blah blah. I wouldn't be surprised if this sense of having plenty of time is why the oppressed felt war was their only option.

Anyway, back to befriending humans.

War is hell.

Fortress Maximus was Overlord's prisoner for three years. That's nothing in the life of a Cybertronian. But he felt every single day of those three years, and it seemed to stretch out for eternity. When so many of your days are marked by pain and loss, they hold more weight. A day is suddenly precious.

War brought Cybertronians perspective on time. Just because you have millions of years ahead of you does not mean that what happens in one can't forever shape you.

How many friendships were made within the Autobot and Decepticon ranks that didn't even last a whole year due to death? Did that make them any less powerful?

So yeah, it makes sense to me that these soldiers could see the value in befriending a human.

If I did the math correctly, a Cybertronian befriending a human is like a human befriending a being that lives for less than a third of a 24-hour day.

I am NOT okay.

Average life expectancy of a Cybertronian, according to IDW: 8 million Earth years, give or take

Average life expectancy of a human: 80-ish years

One Cybertronian lifetime is 100,000x longer than one human lifetime.

One human lifetime (80 years) divided by that same 100,000 equals 0.0008 of one year.

0.0008 of one year is 7.008 hours.

Imagine caring about beings whose entire lifetimes occupy a mere SEVEN HOURS of your day.

This puts in perspective every dismissive comment made by any Cybertronian about humans.

And suddenly, every Cybertronian who’s formed a connection with a human in canon is so much more extraordinary to me.

Warlord Ratchet staying on Cybertron makes a lot of sense to me. He loves his homeworld dearly. We see in the show how hard the loss of the Omega Lock hits him, how much he wants to go home.

Warlord Ratchet would never leave.

Cybertron itself may be what derailed him. As his war began to take a toll on the planet, he may have rationalized it didn't matter how people were treated if they didn't have a planet to live on. He sacrificed morals for the "greater good" of Cybertron itself.

The Senate destroyed their home through neglect and abuse. Only Ratchet is fit to rule and heal their world. Healing the dead planet has become his only goal.

Warlord Ratchet: A Fascinating Concept 

“And to think, the Doctor of Doom’s mad quest for power continues…! His marauders pursued us to this planet’s orbit.” 

What gets me about Megatron telling Orion Pax that the current dilapidated condition of Cybertron was brought about by the Warlord Ratchet, Doctor of Doom (aside from the concept in and of itself) is that he also states that Ratchet has a legion of marauders who carry out his bidding 

and because marauders are raiders, and Megatron states they were “pursued by marauders” to Earth, the implication is that Ratchet is not on Earth himself–

– which is smart on Megatron’s behalf, because this would deter Orion from potentially attempting to leave in order to confront Ratchet and instils a concern that perhaps marauders may appear at any time (at this point, Orion Pax does not yet realise that he is armed and is operating under the belief that he is still an Archivist and therefore not Warrior Class) 

but also, this gives us the incredible mental image of Ratchet milling around in some kind of rusted fortress made from the remains of several different Cybertronian buildings, quite possibly the remnants of Iacon – maybe even the central hospital there, converted into a hive of terror 

still living on an otherwise uninhabited planet, with a loyal band of raiding troops who scavenge the remains of their world and possibly other planets as well (as we know these marauders supposedly have space capable vessels), quite possibly doing so in order to source spare parts and other various salvage – Ratchet is a medic, who knows how he’s been having to piece together his army, repairing them from the remains of random citizens? 

and he supposedly, presumably either from his makeshift base in the shadows of Cybertron or from a war ship of some kind, commanded an army of raiders to chase Megatron and his followers as far away as Earth 

“I cannot imagine Ratchet capable of such horrors!” 

I can only guess at what Orion Pax was thinking in this moment, aside from his immediately stated disbelief: What drove Ratchet to such lengths? What happened to turn his compassionate, caring friend into a warlord capable of carrying out inconceivable destruction? How could such a thing occur, especially at the hands of a respected medic, someone he thought he knew so well? 

Would Orion Pax start to blame himself, for what was clearly the brutal decline of one of his greatest friends? I can imagine him starting to wonder if there was anything he could do, any signs of discontent, any indication that Ratchet was headed down a violent, dark path. 

And I’m sure he would be concerned about Ratchet himself, as well. How is Ratchet faring, nearly entirely alone on their planet save for his loyal bandits, as aged and worn as he ever has been, possibly accepting a lonely inevitable death on an already dead world? 

Or does Warlord Ratchet have yet more plans in store, his instruments of destruction poised to afflict themselves upon other worlds as well? 

The Doctor of Doom: How Could This Happen? 

It’s somewhat easy to dismiss the idea of Ratchet being this “Doctor of Doom”, because it so wildly opposes what we know of the character and what we know actually occurred with the war. 

But when you think about it for a little bit, an unhinged Ratchet would very much be a formidable opponent, especially with his social position in pre-war Cybertron giving him more immediate access to higher class/caste areas than many others would have been able to reach… 

…Perhaps this Warlord Ratchet was able to work his way into the Council’s good graces, possibly after attending to one of them after an injury and restoring them to health, gradually manipulating the Senate from the inside in order to secure more power, resources, allies, and ultimately the whole of Cybertron for himself– Leading to a violent conflict which resulted in the destruction of their world? 

With his medical knowledge, even if he started out with a fairly small number of followers and whatever troops he could finesse away from the Council, he may very well have “built” some himself– We do see in TFP that protoforms may be possible to manipulate into certain frame types, or some types of “cloning” may be possible. 

Any version of Ratchet without morals (or at the very least without any medical ethics) is a very dangerous Ratchet. 

Repairing the injured via patching them together with the remains of fallen comrades, creating a “zombie” army. Ghoulish, lumbering soldiers, marauders held together with armour designed for other frame types. Instructing his former colleagues (who would likely have at least started out with some inclination to follow him) to carry out “repairs” in such a way. 

Warlord Ratchet himself may have chosen to ingest dark energon much like Megatron actually did, perhaps out of a desire to create a new fuel source once Cybertron began to go dark and natural fuel sources began to dwindle. We already know that our actual Ratchet wasn’t afraid to test synthetic energon on himself, with similar motivations. 

His base of operations would quite possibly be Iacon’s medical centre, turned into a horrific hive-like structure, some wards actively still in use for repairs (at least for his own followers) and other areas dedicated to terrifying research, with supply basements full of experimental tech and defensive weaponry. 

Ratchet’s more support class (as opposed to warrior class) approach to things may well carry over to Warlord Ratchet’s approach to war– An emphasis on intelligence ops, R&D, indirect and direct manipulation, initial political manoeuvring from within the existing system, and defensive systems to counter any munitions etc. that may come his way from opposing forces. 

His initial goals may well have genuinely been intended to improve Cybertron, to help people. Much like Megatron, back when he was Megatronus and wanted a more egalitarian, fair society. 

After working on lower class/caste bots who were nearly offlined from a lack of maintenance, poor to no access to healthcare prior to being dragged to him, etc. it may have been the catalyst for his decision to start using his upper class social contacts in an effort to change things from the inside out. 

Unfortunately, in this universe in which Warlord Ratchet rose to power, things may have derailed just as severely as they did with Megatronus and his initially well-intentioned efforts. 

The longer you think about it, the more plausible it could be. 

It would be easy for Megatron to build further upon this idea to manipulate Orion Pax, that Ratchet truly could have done this. 

I’m sure Orion Pax did not recharge well, his first night on the Nemesis. 

Where did things go wrong? What happened to his friend? How could he do this to their world, a world that Ratchet loved so much?

This is Cass. I love her dearly. My girl has a rock-solid moral code. I will be honest; Soundwave does not. But they both want a better world. And that rock-solid moral code is going to save Soundwave's butt.

They do not start out as friends. Cass, the mighty Black Bat, saved Soundwave from being killed by the Wreckers because no one dies on her watch. Ofc Soundwave is one of the bad guys at this point in time, but still, no killing. It's a bit odd for the Autobots to have humans protecting a Decepticon like Soundwave, but Cass won't budge.

Soundwave thinks she's stupid for it, but he's not dead, so he's not complaining.

They have a lot of serious conversations, enabled by the fact Soundwave is a telepath, about what it takes to change the world for the better.

Soundwave is very practical, and Cass is an idealist. Soundwave knows that the Decepticons are not the righteous cause they once were. But he can't leave. To leave now would be certain death.

Cass insists that good will prevail, and she shows Soundwave that good can overcome insurmountable odds. She's proof of that.

She was born and trained to be a weapon. When she was eight, she killed a man for the first and last time. She saw death through the eyes of a man (he wasn't even a good man) and said no more. She ran away and lived on her own for at least eight years despite not being able to speak, read, or write.

(She had a function and she defied it, a right the Decepticons once fought for.)

She shows Soundwave that even though Batman fights against corruption and insurmountable odds while bound by a "foolish" code, he is making a difference. She shows him heroes who have left their dark pasts behind them and lived to tell the tale.

And she continues to fight so Soundwave may live and have the chance to choose a better path.

Slowly but surely, Soundwave chooses a better way.

So Cass' brain is wired so speech and the written word is really hard for her to process. But she can read body language perfectly. She knows when you are lying, what you are really feeling, and she knows who you are at your core. Soundwave is a mech who doesn't really talky. He's a telepath and an empath. The cool thing about these two is that they don't need words to communicate. Also, loyalty is very important to both of them. While they would start out on opposite sides, Cass' oath not to kill or let others be killed outside of the law, would put her in a position where she saved Soundwave's life and brought him to those who could fix him. She would actively protect him from Autobots looking to kill him. They'd also have some really deep "conversations" about killing. Cass has, through her abilities, vicariously experienced death from the perspective of the dying. Soundwave has the power to experience the same. Cass would push him to do so, to really examine if how he is fighting will get him a better world. These two would just click and with time they would become close friends and partners in crime fighting.

Webby and Globine

So fun fact, there's a character called Globi that is basically considered the "Mickey Mouse of Switzerland" and he has a daughter (or maybe niece I forget) named Globine who often has adventures of her own. Globine is a little bird girl and I think she'd get along with another little bird girl - Webby! They would totally get into all sorts of adventures together. It would be really cute.

The original Thirteen Primes ARE NOT SIBLINGS. Even though they occasionally addressed each other as “brothers,” it was in a ‘brotherly love’ sort of way.

The type of relationship is not sibling-like to me, and I have always been slightly confused by the part of the fandom that sees them as such.

Hey, I like a tragic love story, okay? Megatronus x Solus Prime was basically my original TF OTP, so imagine my disappointment when I found out that parts of the fandom see the Primes as ACTUAL siblings.
