KogKag Week - Prompt #7
AU
A/N: So this is basically inspired by Captain America, because I like to hurt myself and found this beautiful video which destroyed me on the inside.(I’ll post the video on a separate post.) I thought it would be fun to write a KogKag version, but give it a happy ending. I also want to say that I had the BEST time doing KogKag Appreciation week. I really want to thank @maddieson-san and @kagomehigurashi for making me feel so welcome and loved. You guys rock!!!
Smoke filled the club while a slow jazz number was being played by the band. Kagome entered the club in a striking red dress and matching lips. Soldiers openly stared as she made her way past them, her eyes looking for one specific man.
His blue eyes met hers, and the roamed over her body appreciatively. Kagome met his gaze confidently, and watched as he left his two buddies to meet her.
“Fancy seeing you here,” Kouga greeted her, handing her a drink.
“I believe we talked of dancing before you shipped out on your mission,” Kagome smiled. Her fingers lingered, grazing his hand as she slowly took the drink for him.
“I’m not much of a dancer.”
“You just need the right partner.”
Kouga chuckled as she flirted with him. He was glad she was trying to keep things light. They both knew he might not make it back alive.
“That’s my woman. Always keeping a brave face.” He tilted her face to his, trying his best to remember every inch of her face. The curve of her smile. The gray-blue of her eyes. How she always blushed when he told the troops that was his woman leading those troops. Only his woman would be the lead code broker.
Kagome leaned into his touch, breathing his scent in. She knew at that moment she would always remember the rough feel of his hand as he touched her.
“I came to say goodbye,” she whispered.
Kouga’s heart broke as the words she said sank in.
“I got to do this,” he argued.
“I understand. You wouldn’t be the man I fell in love with if you didn’t volunteer yourself. This mission could change the war for us. I just can’t see you off tomorrow.” Kagome looked at him sincerely and continued, “Let’s just have one more night together. Let’s act like there is no war, and you aren’t leaving tomorrow. We can have the band play something slow.”
Kouga placed his lips on her, softly and gently. “One more night,” he agreed.
“Kouga, we gotta go.”
Kagome and Kouga both looked up at their intruder who broke their spell. Hakkaku stood there, nervously wringing his hat.
“Our commanding officer just called. We got orders to leave tonight. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. I’ll stall the men for a few minutes so you can say goodbye.” Hakkaku nodded at Kagome, dismissing himself from their private moment.
Kagome looked at Kouga helplessly.
“Wait for me,” he passionately said as he grabbed her hands.
“Kouga…,” Kagome trailed off as she looked away, doubt etched on her face.
He softly cupped her face and brought it back to his, his blue eyes looking at her were full of promise.
“I promise I’ll come back, and I don’t ever break a promise to my best gal.”
“Write me every chance you get. I’ll try to get radio time with you. Just come back to me darling.”
Kouga sealed the promise with a firm kiss. He didn’t look back as he left the club. He was sure if he saw her standing there alone waiting for him, he would abandon orders and stay with her. His men were waiting for him outside the bar. He looked them over as he realized they were all like him. They all had loved ones they had back home, and they were all sacrificing it all for their country.
“Come on men, we got a war to win,” he commanded gruffly.

Kagome wrote letters to Kouga weekly on the battlefront. She did her best to sneak into meetings that discussed the mission, and held her breath as she heard the mortality list. As long as he survived that one more day, he could get to come home.
She never knew if he got the letters. Travelling in a secret mission meant their location had to stay hidden. Knowing that, Kagome continued to send the letters, hoping her love would get them so he would know she never gave up on him.
Kouga never had the opportunity to write Kagome consistently. The few letters he did write were filled of promises of what was to come for them once the war was over, and how she was the only woman for him. He always ended his letters reminding her she was his woman, and he would always keep his promise to his best gal.
He constantly took out his small, golden pocket watch and looked at the picture of her he kept in there. It was a small token that reminded him of home and his woman waiting for him. The other soldiers understood. Whenever they had a moment alone to themselves late at night, or camped out in the woods, they would pull out their special photo, and think of a place far away.
Kouga was out on the mission for a few months before they got word their target was a day away. They prepared their weapons, went over strategies, and discussed what they knew about the enemy.
Their mission was to destroy the Bird of Paradise, a new plane that was being sent out to destroy cities all over the globe. Millions of people could die, and they had to stop it.
“We have to make sure that plane never leaves the ground. If we don’t, not only will our country suffer, but others as well. This is a dangerous weapon that needs to be destroyed. We all knew we may not make it out of here, but we are gonna do our damn best to make sure we do. On my mark we go,” the commander ordered. “Go!”
The unit went screaming into battle, rushing forward fearlessly as bullets whizzed by. Some fell and never got up, their eyes open as the life drained out of them. Some were shot and still managed to rush in.
Kouga was with Ginta and Hakkaku, running into the warehouse to set up the bomb that would destroy the plane.
A single shot ran out and blood spurted from Ginta’s left shoulder.
“Ah!” he cried out.
“Take Ginta and hide. I’ll come back for you!” Kouga ordered Hakkaku. He nodded and dragged his friend behind shipment crates, putting pressure on the wound.
“You ain’t gonna die out here man, keep it together,” Hakkaku pleaded. “Ayame is waiting for you. You’re gonna be a dad,” Hakkaku continued, urging his buddy to stay strong and stay focused.
Ginta’s face was paler than normal. “If I don’t make it-”
“Don’t talk like that man. You’re gonna be fine. Kouga is gonna come back and we’ll go get you help.”
“If I don’t make it,” Ginta tried again, “take care of Ayame for me. Watch out for my kid. I got a letter for her I wrote in my duffel just in case. Make sure she gets it.”
Hakkaku nodded, doing his best to fight the unshed tears.
Kouga was running forward, fighting off the enemy soldiers as best as he could so he could get on the plane. He almost got shot, but the next wave of his infantry made it through. He grabbed one of the shoulders and told him what happened to Ginta and told him to take care of them. He prayed it was enough to help his friend.
Kouga boarded the plane and set the bomb down, not noticing there was an enemy fighter pilot in the cockpit. The engines roared to life and the plane prepared for takeoff, shutting the door with Kouga inside.
He hoped the pilot didn’t know he was on there, and prepared to sneak up behind him and shoot him dead. Luck wasn’t on his side as the pilot veered to the right violently, causing Kouga to crash into the side of the plane.
“Who’s there?” the pilot called out.
Kouga had no choice but to attack. He grabbed the pilot by his uniform and pulled him out of the seat, dragging him onto the floor and punching him in the face. The pilot threw a right hook that landed squarely on Kouga’s jaw.
Kouga shook it off as he fumbled for his gun, before the pilot pushed him off and stood on his own two feet. Kouga could taste blood from his lip. When did that bust open?
The pilot tackled him on the ground, attempting to hold him down as Kouga struggled. Somehow his fingers reached his gun, and he swung it against the temple of the pilot. With a sickening crunch, the pilot collapsed on top of him. Kouga locked him up in case he regained consciousness and ran to the chair.
The plane was set on auto pilot, and Kouga did his best to remember some flight rules. He needed to get on his army’s radio frequency and make contact. Maybe they could help him.
“Mayday, mayday, this is Officer Kouga needing immediate assistance. Repeat, mayday, mayday, this is Officer Kouga needing immediate assistance.”
Kouga listened, but all her got was static.
“Repeat, mayday, mayday this is Officer Kouga, repeat this is Officer Kouga, is anyone there?”
Static was heard on the other end, when suddenly it came to life.
“This is Officer Inuyasha, what’s the issue?”
“Officer Inuyasha, this is Officer Kouga requesting immediate assistance in landing a plane. I am a member of the 127th infantry, and was part of the special operation program paradise bird. Identity code: Whiskey, Oscar, Lima, Foxtrot.”
“Standby as we verify,” Inuyasha responded. He had his deskmate Miroku run the information through the phone line operators.
“Officer Kouga you are verified, what is the issue?”
“The bird is en route to capital, need immediate assistance in landing. I cannot override location, but I think I can takeover if someone helps me land this damn thing.”
“Shit,” Inuyasha muttered as he realized the gravity of the situation. “Miroku, get someone in here from aviation, now! Shippou go grab Kagome.” The two scrambled out of the room as Inuyasha tried to get as much information from Kouga about what was happening.
“What’s happening? Where’s Kouga?” Kagome demanded as she entered the room.
Inuyasha handed her the radio as he began to search for coordinates where Kouga could safely land.
“Kogua is that you, are you alright?’ Kagome asked as she sat in Inuyasha’s chair.
“Kagome? I’m as well as I could be,” he grimly joked.
“What about the plane?” she asked.
“That’s a bit tougher to explain. I’m on it right now.”
Kagome cursed under her breath. “That’s alright darling, Inuyasha and his team are looking for a safe landing spot right now. You’ll be alright,” she tried to placate him, but failed to hide the quaver in her voice.
Inuyasha took the radio from her. “Kouga, this isn’t going to be easy. There is no good landing spot. You’re gonna have to take her in the water.”
“No, please don’t do this!” Kagome cried out to Inuyasha. “There has to be another way!”
Kouga sat in the seat, realizing what it meant. He sat quietly for a minute before he broke the silence. “Kagome, this is my choice. A lot of people are going to die if I don’t do this.”
Kagome did her best not to cry as she realized she may never see her love again. Why did she fall in love with such a fool like him?
“There’s a chance you can survive this,” Miroku jumped in. “If you can get the plane to land within five degrees of these coordinates, we can get our air force guys nearby to meet you. It won’t be easy, but it is doable.”
“Kagome, I love you.”
“Don’t,” she pleaded, “this isn’t goodbye. You still owe me a dance.”
Kouga let out a soft laugh as he began to steer the plane downward to the ocean. He pulled out his pocket watch and looked at her photo one last time. ‘I’m still not much of a dancer. We are gonna have to ask the band to play something slow.”
Kagome smiled at his lightheartedness, knowing he would want her to be brave right now.
“Kouga, the impact is going to hurt you the most, be prepared for the force. Do your best to slow down the plane as much as you can. Look around you, is there anything you can use to keep the steering wheel in place?” Miroku asked.
“I’ll figure it out. Don’t forget to send the boys looking for me,” Kouga replied.
“Kouga, be safe,” Kagome begged.
Static came through on the other end.
“Kouga?”
The room was silent.
“Kouga?” her voice broke as she tried to reach him one last time. She felt someone put a hand on her shoulder as she began to cry in the radio room.
“I’ll go tell our air force boys to head out and search for plane remains. Don’t worry Kagome,” Inuyasha told her.
Kagome barely heard as she felt her world crashing around her.
—-
The first thing Kouga regained was his hearing. He heard a steady beeping and the sounds of machines. Everything was black, and he realized his eyes were still closed. It took him a few tries to open them, the world bursting in and out of focus. When his eyes finally opened, he was greeted by the sight of his Kagome sitting at his bedside table.
“Kagome,” he croaked out.
Kagome looked up and saw those beautiful blue eyes she fell in love with.
“You’re alive. You came back to me.” She squeezed his hand and felt tears began to fall down her face.
“Well I couldn’t leave my woman. Not when she owes me a dance.”
Kagome laughed through her tears as she realized he came back to her, just like he promised.
