Common Witchy Terms

Athame

A ceremonial knife, typically black handled with a double-edged blade. You use it to inscribe your candles or to cast a circle around the altar before commencing a spell.

Altar

A place where you do rituals or spells. It is often a special table or shelf where your ritual tools are kept.

Amulet

Is an object that is carried or worn on a person or placed in a location in order to draw specific energy or luck toward that person or location.

Book of Shadow

A Book of Shadows is a Witch's journal. It contains notes on experiments, information they picked up along the way, spells, recipes, correspondences, chants, traditions and more.

Coven

A coven is a community of witches who gather regularly for religious and/or social occasion.

Divination

Divination is the metaphysical work of finding the truth of an issue by using symbols and objects to interpret messages from the the collective unconscious or from communication with spirit beings.

Evoke

To call or summon a spirit or entity or deity.

Familiar

A familiar is a magic-user's spiritual helper manifest in animal form.

Grimoire

Is a magical manual or a magician's instruction book. It is much more formal than a Book of Shadows.

Hex

It refer to an unfriendly spell meant to bring about mischief.

Invoke

to summon or draw a spirit being into your own body. This is usually done to encourage communication between the spirit world and the material world.

Sachet

A small bag of herbs, crystals, or other objects that is meant to bring about a desired effect; essentially acts as a charm.

Ward

A protective barrier may be maintained by a spell, a talisman, a symbol or some other physical or energy object.

6 Types of Protection Magick

There are many ways one can do protective magick. In this post I'll be going into 6 of the most common and accessible ones!

Please understand that even one "protection magick type" can be done in an infinity of ways, some of which are closed to certain practices.

Disclaimer: based on my experience and research. I don't claim to know all truth. Further study is encouraged!

#1 — Magic circle

The magic circle consists of creating a protection and delimiting a sacred space for magic and/or ritual.

The magic circle is probably one of the most popular protection methods thanks to its encouraged use in Wicca. However, other traditions have made use of similar concepts, such as in the afro-brazillian Umbanda concept of "chain".

The circle can be physically drawn on the ground, delimited by the members inside the circle, or visualized.

Casting one is fairly simple since it can be done in different ways, either in groups or solitary practice. You can use tools such as wands, chalk or physical objects to draw it, but what matters most is intention and successful visualization.

Before casting a circle it's important to have everything you will need already within grasp and inside the circle, since once created it is advisable that no one leaves it until the work is complete.

#2 — Amulets, and Enchanted Items

Enchanted Items are a very popular and effective form of magic, especially for personal use. These are often common objects that have been enchanted for protection.

They are often necklaces, rings and other jewelry since these are the most practical to carry around without suspicion. However, they can be any object.

Amulets can be created via enchanting, charms, or by asking deities and spirits to bless them with protective qualities.

The material and imagery used to create the talisman is also important in determining the kind of job it wants to do.

#3 — Sigils and other drawn Symbols

Sigils and Symbols can be used both for personal protection and for warding spaces. Here I am also including Runes.

They can be carved into objects, drawn upon skin and surfaces, or even tattooed.

However, before using any sigil, symbol or rune it is of extreme importance that you know exactly what they do, and know as much about them as possible. Especially if you plan on drawing them on your skin (either temporarily or permanently).

Unless specifically used only for protection purposes, inadequate use of them can lead to disaster. Even then, the type of protection they bring can vary.

For example, a protection sigil that works by hiding you from threats is different from a sigil that fights threats that come to you. It's important to set or to know how their protection work so that you do not come across unwanted results.

#4 — Prayer

My definition of praying: focusing on sending a message to a higher spiritual power, be it an entity, deity or energy.

Prayers are a great way of manifesting protection, though since you are asking for it to a higher power you must understand that it may choose to not grant it, or not grant it in the way you expect.

Plus, it is very important to know where you stand with this energy or entity. Do you work with them already? For how long? What is the nature of the relationship? Do you truly know them well enough to ask them for this? Is it really appropriate?

Cultivating a good relationship and having manners can be decisive factors for manifesting this sort of protection. Plus, it's always good to "give back" in some way. To receive something, something must be given eventually.

#5 — Affirmations and Visualizations

Words and the mind have innate power. Affirmations and visualizations are great ways to manifest protections because they rely only on yourself.

They are easier to do right if you use them together with other methods, or if you have physical representations of the work being done. To be successful one must focus, "feel" them happening, and maintaining that without help can be difficult. Frequent practice will help you get the hang of it.

There are also techniques that make affirmations and visualizations both more powerful and easier to accomplish.

#6 — Warding

Warding is when you set up a semi-permanent protection in a specific place, such as your house.

It can be done in many different ways. One of the most common is to have an object or place designated as the "holder" of the ward, which should be well kept.

Warding will be more powerful if you are frequently cleansing the space and recharging the ward. Leaving it alone for too long can weaken in or make it lose its properties altogether.

Some plants are used for this kind of protection, since they (usually) stay in place, can be powerful magical allies, and you'll be checking on them often anyway. The ones usued are often those with thorns, threatening-looking leaves, or even poison.

Note: always be very careful about bringing poisonous plants home, especially if you have children or pets.

Conclusion

This was an overview of the most common types of protective magick. A lot of protection spells and works fall somewhere within these categories, or are a combination of them.

Each tradition has a certain way of going about spiritual protection, so if you are exploring an specific path, I encourage you to not only research about protection in general but to also look into what unique techniques your path has to offer!

20. Can’t resist collecting powerful artifacts, even if they don’t know what they do.

21. Can temporarily “borrow” someone’s ability, but only for a short time and with chaotic results.

22. Has a hidden, second personality that they can only access in times of intense danger or during sleep.

23. Is allergic to magical substances, causing unpredictable side effects when exposed to enchanted objects.

Green blur into blacks, blur into browns. The forest floor scatters in your steps. Sprints into leaves with pebbles kicked to the side amongst the rush. Mirages of a panicked soul. The moonlight reveals all. Your gaped eyes. Shrunk pupils. The titter and wobble in your run.

Where will you go? The question mocks you now. Same as the burn to your heels. Along the stings branches left over arms. An attempt to drag you back. The forest tries to tell you it's not worth it. Of course not. It's one thing you turn tail at conflict's first sign. This was different. He followed you. You felt him. Heard him. If you fled, why did he chase? More importantly, why did it feel for more than comfort?

Yize has always been a calm individual. Calm, smooth, effortless. All the traits you fell for. But a red streak is what you always turned a blind eye to. It rarely frightened you, so why would it be a call for concern? Possessiveness is nothing new. Not in this magical world. Angels and demons staked their claim in some of the most extreme ways. There are several common misconceptions city folk have when first settling into the Zones.

The first, is that masks are meant to protect the living. While living under constant surveillance, it is perhaps only natural to find solace in the impression of anonymity provided by face coverings such as masks, helmets, and bandanas, and even more cynical types who claim their purpose is to obfuscate what little presence BL/i does nurture amidst the harsh desert winds— however, these are nothing more than outsiders' views on matters that had not previously concerned them. The truth is, in fact, much simpler: masks are talismans, and bargaining chips of the dead— they prove there once was someone who cherished them and whom they in turn swore to protect. No one can return from the dead without renouncing some part of themselves, and when dealing with something as strongly entwined with one's identity as a mask, it is one last chance for forgiveness or retribution.

The second most common misconception amongst newcomers, is that all information shared voluntarily is shared without ill intent. It is undeniable that skill and information are what constitute power both sides of the wall, and that the latter is often freely shared amongst those willing to stand their ground against Better Living as a form of leverage, but unlike the City which has had its bare bones exposed, ground down, and then rebuilt inside-out in the crater of something far larger than any atomic bomb, the Zones are alive. Alive in a way which goes far beyond the roads spreading like veins and arteries beneath fallow land. Alive in a way which alludes even the conscious component of a place brimming with the unknown and unexplainable where the line between one's perception and physical reality is drawn thin. Alive in a way that is cold and uncaring, and which if exposed would be enough to drive even the most devout believers and cynical scholars mad. It is truth which makes the sharpest blade, afterall.

The third and final misconception many new zonerunners hold to be true, is that numbers are a liability. While undeniable that resources in the Zones are scarce and that it's more difficult to move as a group rather than an individual, to treat one's life as merely an extension of their escape from the clutches of Battery City is no better than to pen their name on their own death certificate. There is of course the practical aspect of desert community as well; although scattered like dandelion seeds in the wind, killjoys often come together for events such as parties, races, concerts and markets, and even on more mundane occasions there are more than a handful of crews loitering about Tommy Chow Mein's or slumbering sharehouses and bars. Information travels fast within groups and although there is such a thing as too much, patrol routes and standing commissions will always be made known on the ground before the airwaves. Solitude may be effective while running, but rest is always better shared with those you've come to trust

COMMON WITCHY TERMS / TOOLS

ATHAME: a ritualistic knife, typically black handled with a double-edged blade. You use it to cast a circle around the altar before commencing a spell and to direct energy. 

ALTAR: a place where you do rituals or spells. It is often a special table or shelf where your ritual tools are kept.

AMULET: an object that is carried or worn on a person or placed in a location in order to draw specific energy or luck toward that person or location.

BOLINE: the witch's working knife, a white-handled ritual knife that has several magical tools. Such as being used to carve candles and cut herbs. 

BROOM: used to purify and sweep away negative energy. 

BOOK OF SHADOWS: a Book of Shadows is a Witch's journal. It contains notes on experiments, information they picked up along the way, spells, recipes, correspondences, chants, traditions and more.

COVEN: a coven is a community of witches who gather regularly for religious and/or social occasion.

CAULDRON: a cauldron is used to build a ritual fire or concoct magic brews. 

CHALICE: a chalice is used for drinking ritual brews and magic potions. 

CANDLES AND INCENSE: essential ingredients in many spells, can also be used to cleanse objects and your space.  

CRYSTALS: typically used as batteries of energy in spellwork. 

DIVINATION: the metaphysical work of finding the truth of an issue by using symbols and objects to interpret messages from the collective unconscious or from communication with spirit beings.

EVOKE: to call or summon a spirit, entity and/or deity.

FAMILIAR: afamiliar is a magic-user's spiritual helper manifest in animal form.

GRIMOIRE: a magical manual or a magician's instruction book. It is much more formal than a Book of Shadows.

HEX: referring to an unfriendly spell meant to bring about mischief.

INVOKE: to summon or draw a spirit being into your own body. This is usually done to encourage communication between the spirit world and the material world.

JARS AND BOXES: used to store ingredients and can be used for spells. 

MORTAR AND PESTLE: a mortar and pestle used to grind herbal mixtures for spellwork. 

PENTACLE: used to symbol the five elements and for protection. 

SACHET: a small bag of herbs, crystals, or other objects that is meant to bring about a desired effect; essentially acts as a charm.

WARD: a protective barrier may be maintained by a spell, a talisman, a symbol or some other physical or energy object.

Cultural Quirks part 2 (I think).

This culture doesn't believe that art should exist - "An artist is just a fool who cannot appreciate the surrounding nature, who cannot see the beauty in what is so they try to either make things look beautiful to themselves on canvas, or even invent things that don't exist and please only them."

This culture uses lots of bread-pots for food. Meat-stuffed bread, soup in bread bowls, salad served in bread buckets. Truth is the price of flour and grain in their lands is so low due to local factors that they just don't know what to do with it (other than sell, that is; Must be some reason they don't want to trade their grain away).

A city which, at the second Tuesday of each month, allows "free barter" between any two citizen: It is, in essence, thievery, but by stealing one must also leave something behind, hence the barter part. During that day, many lock their doors and stay inside, some on the other hand call friends over to "give away" things, receiving gifts in return. It is a strange yet strong tradition that quite strongly affects the economics locally.

This nation has a folklore "Right" that is given to every lastborn child after their father's death: The New Home right. It is a right of seeking refuge in any place, under any landowner's territory, as they must provide them with a room and bed at very minimum and without objections. It can be invoked on their own eldest siblings, too, if the latter inherit the estate of the father they didn't.

A culture known for having "rune rocks", personal charms that have weak magical potency and provide positive effects relative to the previous experiences of the one holding them. A "talisman against house fires" will work best if you never ever had house fires before, and same for "good trade", "school" and et.c. things. Nobody among mages has a goddamn clue how that works, because neither the runes or the rocks have magical potency, yet, combined, they somehow have magical effect.

A culture which learned architecture from bees, in the ancient times, and was inspired to use honeycomb hexagons as the base of their buildings rather than rectangles.

Code Name: Corpse of a Witch

Object Class: Keter

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-AMU is contained at Site-AR within a metal coffin locked in a 5x5 meter containment room. The containment room and the rest of the Site is separated by a 10 meter hallway, extending beyond SCP-AMU’s known area of effect. The walls of the room are marked with thaumaturgic sigils as well as tagged with thaumaturgic talisman from various religions. A single AFA-1 unit that is given a specialized thaumaturgic religious based cloak is allowed to enter to check on the integrity of the talisman and the coffin. This AFA-1 unit is also responsible for replacing worn talismans or making repairs to the coffin if necessary. In the event of a containment breach there are five separate shutter walls that activate and lock down the hallway to SCP-AMU’s containment room. Each one is 2 feet thick and contains a device that emits specialized frequencies that disrupt teleportation or any kind of reality warping. Additionally there is a Brundle Intananius Teleporter within the room allowing two AFA-2 units to enter. They are to be armed with silenced pistols, shock batons, and programmed with advanced Foundation close quarter combat techniques. 

Any Testing with SCP-AMU must be approved by a Level 4 Foundation Clearance Staff member or higher. When transporting SCP-AMU all Foundation staff are to be alerted to stay away from the intended path and the testing chamber. All transporting staff must wear anti-cognitohazard head gear to prevent them from experiencing SCP-AMU’s anomalous effects. Additionally, a thaumaturgic based exorcist must be present and constantly utilizing their capabilities on SCP-AMU to suppress it as much as possible. The exorcist is to continue and have a backup with them to continue their work should they get exhausted. This process must be maintained during testing and until SCP-AMU is taken back to its containment cell. 

Description: SCP-AMU is the freshly preserved corpse of what is assumed to be a witch that was killed during the Salem Witch Trials during the 1600s. Though history has proved that a majority of the women killed during that time were innocent, it appears that SCP-AMU was not only an actual witch but an extremely powerful one. The evidence in her origin lies in the fact that under her skin is old christian and satanic thaumaturgic sigils that have stopped being used in the 18th Century. How exactly these sigils got under her skin without damaging the rest of her body is currently unknown. 

Besides the sigils under her skin, her waist shows signs that she had worn a corset for most of her life as women did back in the 1600s. Her body has not set into rigor mortis and there are signs that her blood was still flowing in her vein's meaning death is very recent, yet her eyes are grey suggesting she has been dead for several days. As stated, before her skin is perfectly fine, but her wrist and ankle bones are shattered, her tongue has been crudely cut out, one of her molars is missing. Taking the tongue, a molar, shattering her wrists, and shattering the ankles was a common tactic that was used to torture and kill witches. Her lungs are blackened as though she had suffered third-degree burns, and her internal organs reveal numerous scarring from stabs. Both the burning and stabbing are different ways on how witches were killed besides hanging, though normally those who were caught as actually witches were forced to suffer through both. Finally there was Jimsonweed found in her stomach which was a paralyzing agent native to New England used to subdue witches during the witch trials. 

The unfortunate truth is that the Foundation knows a majority of this due to one of our founder organizations the Commission on Unusual Cargo. Our ancestor organization maintained its funding and peaceful ties with England by providing them and the settlers of America at the time with items needed and providing methods needed to kill off witches. It seems that SCP-AMU is a corpse of one of the indirect victims of the CUC. Testing is ongoing to see if she is actually dead but it is quite clear that her magic is still alive and is seeking retribution on all who just happened to be close by. 

When someone is within 10-8 meters of SCP-AMU they will experience heavy illusions that affect all of five cognitive senses to an astronomical degree to the point whatever reality SCP-AMU makes will seem much more real than reality itself. She will torment and inflict pain on everyone that is with her, additionally if she is in a closed area like a building or house then her effects get even worse. Somehow SCP-AMU is able to make it so that there is no way to leave the house she is currently in with methods such as trees or large debris crushing in on all exits and making it storm so brutally that there is no choice but to stay inside. If there is more than one person she will make them see one another as monsters trying to kill each other forcing the victims to do so until they are all dead. Should there be only one victim she will show them terrifying illusions until they finally go insane or die of an accident. SCP-AMU does not care for mercy and doesn’t make deals, even if the victims beg for forgiveness or sacrifice themselves to save their friends or family she will kill them all anyways. 

SCP-AMU was discovered in 2016 after a vicious killing of a corner at [data expunged] including his son and his son's girlfriend. This killing only occurred the day after a mass killing that occurred within the house on [data expunged] where SCP-AMU was originally discovered. Both these incidents were not declared a coincidence and thus Foundation agents in the local police took SCP-AMU. It was originally transported to a Local Foundation Area to be examined before transportation. All contact with the area was lost soon after and the next day everyone was reported dead. AFA units were sent into the Area and retrieved all data including what the staff found out about SCP-AMU. 

Afterwards AFA-2 units were entrusted to send SCP-AMU to Site-AR. In the meantime, Site-AR was temporarily evacuated with a majority of the workforce maintained by AFA units as a precaution. Thankfully SCP-AVC took over the AFA units managing Site-AR during SCP-AMU’s containment, so nothing was ruined, and no containment breach occurred. Though everyone returned to normal afterwards SCP-AMU remains a grave reminder that the sins of the past do not always remain buried. It is also a reminder that the Witch Trials was one of humanity's worst sins committed to itself; though the real tragedy is that despite how horrific it was, it's not even close to being the absolute worst.

Arthur looked up at him for a second, then rolled his eyes. The brass fleur-de-lys medallion was still laced between his fingers as he sighed. Head bowed, shoulders slumped, and he hadn't even been defeated yet.

"I got it quite painstakingly, I'll have you know! The spell was-.... I'm not even a sorcerer!"

That was true. Francis was no sorcerer, he was a mere weapon, not very performative and annoying on top of that.

'You must fight under my banner!' he had emphatically declared upon becoming edified what this thing was about, and Arthur had concluded it had been an utter waste keeping himself sober for the summoning.

Seriously, no wonder he'd been utterly ridiculed by nearly all other wielders. Well, minus the two other sorcerers, but still this was no match for Lukas's formidable Viking battle axe Mathias Kohler. Valentin had not been so lucky, having acquired a Turkic-Bulgar sword, slightly curved and awkward, but making up in brutality what he lacked in strength and skill.

Francis however was neither strong nor brutal; he only had a sharp tip and an overly elegant wrought-iron handle Arthur constantly felt coiling around his hand in an encroaching fashion.

Their first and only match so far had been an utter disaster.

Truth be told, they'd been unprepared and above all both had failed to recognize how badly out of tune they were with each other as a wielder-weapon team; and then they'd had absolutely rotten luck to be pitched against the most powerful team of all - Lovino and Antonio were both weapons and wielders and they were flexible enough to *switch* during a fight, effectively throwing their opponents off the tracks.

As such, first Lovino had toyed with them and then the Spaniard had all but pounded them into the ground. With a halberd.

But jolly good he had a fleur-de-lys talisman now to make up for all they were lacking.

"Is this on your coat of arms?" he inquired flatly.

"Why do you ask?"

"Because I'm NOT wearing your coat of arms! I thought we already had this conversation!"

"But we need a coat of arms to go to battle under, and you don't have any! You're not even a knight-"

"Francis, we suck! And no one else is a knight either! The age of knights is long gone, what we need is-"

The Frenchman sighed dramatically, flipping his blondle curls backwards, and waived his hand in dismissal.

What he needed was another weapon. Someone both more compatible and pliant.

Protection Magic: Some Important Concepts

Long post based on my experience and research. Meant to be informative. I don't claim to know the absolute truth.

Protection magic is any type of work meant to protect A from B, and there are many ways that this can be done: prayers, charms, talismans, tokens, casting circles, setting up wards, visualization. The list can go on and on because it can be done in many different ways and combining many different methods.

But methods are not the topic of this post today. No, today I would like to talk about some key concepts to keep in mind before getting started on making protections and keeping them effective.

The Importance of Cleansing

Before doing any protection work I like to do a cleansing. Imagine you have an open water bottle, and because it was open, a lot of dirt has found its way into it over time. You decide to seal the bottle so no dirt comes in, but you don't pour out the old water, so you end up sealing it in. Yes, you'll keep more dirt from coming in, but the muck is still there.

It is easier to see this being applied to a physical location, but I personally also apply this to personal protective tokens. I feel they work better when you are taking care of your energies by doing regular cleanses and managing internal negativity.

Important Definitions

Protection ≠ Banishing ≠ Cleansing

I feel a lot of people are under the impression that these are all the same. I think they all work together towards a similar goal, but their jobs are different.

Protection: protecting something from something

Banishing: driving out entities

Cleansing: clearing out energy

You can do cleansing, banishing, and protection at the same time, but that doesn't mean they are the same. You can do a ritual including all of them, but you can also just do a cleansing or just do warding (which is a form of protection).

Note: cleansing is not restricted to “negative energy”. You can cleanse any kind of energy. Exemple: a friend of yours decides tarot is not for them and hands down their deck to you. If you wanna work with that deck it is highly advisable that you do a thorough cleansing of it and then infuse it/consecrate it with the energies you want. It's not that your friend has “bad” energy, it's just that you might not want to work with the same energies they have, or use a tool that has someone else's energy in it.

Not Necessarily a Lazy Job

One important thing with protection magic is that no matter how strong or how successful are at doing it is that it is not failproof. I have yet to see protection work that lasts forever, and there may be a few reasons for it.

Negativity also comes from within

Imagine you have a fish inside an open fish tank. Just like the bottle example earlier, you decide to put a lid on so you prevent leaves from falling into the tank and polluting the water. However, there's a fish, a living being in there, and it produces waste. It is impossible for the fish to live without producing waste. If you don’t regularly clean the water, ammonia and fecal matter will build up.

In this analogy, you are the fish. I am the fish. Humans literally cannot live without ever having a negative thought or feeling, it is part of our existence and we have to live with it. No one lives in constant bliss.

That doesn't mean we have to live in the muck though. That's why cleansing yourself is important.

No one is immune to the environment

Here I have another analogy for you. Imagine you're facing a harsh winter, but you are safe in the security and warmth of your house. Your house is protected from the cold so you don't even mind it. However, you have to go outside. You dress up, go out and you feel very, very cold. You could perhaps wear something warmer, but it will never feel the same as home. Yet it is better than going outside naked, no?

Same thing for energies. You can have protection, but depending on how strong the energy in the environment is you are sure to feel it to at least some degree. However it's best to have some protection than no protection at all.

And there is a difference between Feeling an energy and dwelling in it vs Feeling an energy and not letting it latch onto you.

Energy can wear off, and new energy can build up

Energy is ever changing, ever moving. If you do a strong protection spell once, it can last for a long while, but if you forget about it it will likely lose a lot of its strength over time. Some of what you put out there might wear off and be substituted by something else. The energy can also grow stale, which means it becomes less effective.

But if you do a strong spell every month you will not only make your protections stronger, but also constantly renew the energies and not let them stagnate.

So keep doing cleanses and every now and then give a boost to your protections so they are refreshed and recharged.

Note on "Negative Energy"

One of the main reasons someone might choose to do a protection ritual and a cleansing is to ward off negative energy. But is that really needed? What is "negative energy"?

Negative energy might feel like a sense of heaviness, dread, pain, sadness, feeling ill, angry, sad or anxious. Emotions produce and attract what we can call "negative energy", the same way it can make us feel those things.

And while I personally think nobody wants to feel them, we must understand they are not always bad at their core.

The uncomfortable feelings they can cause may also be a gateway for healing and transformation. Pain tells us there is something that needs to be worked on, that needs change.

If you are feeling negative, ask yourself why. Why does this bother me? What makes me feel this way? What can I learn from this pain?

If you happen to feel negative energy, it is good to cleanse and protect. But I advise you to always look for the source to see what can be done about it or what you can learn from it. Don't just try to use spellcasting to run away from your shit. Own your shit. Deal with it.

Otherwise, it will keep coming back no matter how much protection you have.

Conclusion

It is impossible to always be free from “negative energy” all the time, no matter how strong your protections are. But protections can absorb some of the blows that you would otherwise take and ease the ones you were going to take no matter what.

Protection magic alone will not solve all your problems. It is a great tool to help you keep your center and remain grounded, but it is not usually something you do once and forget. It is a continuous, ever evolving work, meant to be used in conjunction with other types of spellwork.

And most importantly, it can give you some comfort through the many trials of life.

More Talia al Ghul 

Although he had lived for centuries thanks to the rejuvenating powers of the Lazarus Pits, Ra’s al Ghul knew that he was not immortal and that he would eventually require an heir to continue the work of the Society of Shadows in his wake.  Ra’s had sired many sons over his long life yet none measured up and each proved a disappointment.  

Meanwhile, Ra’s daughter, Talia, had proven herself far an away to be the most competent, loyal, shrewd and effective of her father's lieutenants.  It was only Ra’s deeply seated sexism that prevented him from seeing Talia as the obvious choice to ultimately replace him as the Demon’s Head and leader of the Society of Shadows.  

Despite his flaws Talia remained dutiful to her father.  When Ra's desperation to extend his life led him down a ruinous path, Talia recruited Batman to assist her in saving her father from himself.  

Some time later, Talia aided her father in a new venture that sought to use a magical talisman to steal the powers of Superman and transfer them into Ra’s.  The plan nearly succeeded yet Batman interceded so to save Superman.  Both Talia and Ra’s appeared to perish in the ensuring struggle yet both managed to survive and would later return.  

In the end, Talia’s loyalty to her father was awarded with the cruelest twist of them all.  Talia agreed to sacrifice her own life so that Ra’s could transfer his sentience into her youthful body.   Talia's mind, her soul, was essentially erased, covered over by that of her father’s.  And now occupying a fresh, younger body, Ra’s was once more able to use the Lazarus Pits to maintain his youth and vigor.   

Many years past yet Ra’s sexist notions persisted.  He wanted to be a man again; yet not just any man but rather the one man whom he ever truly respected.  Hence he had his agents track down Bruce Wayne, who had long since retired from his role as Batman.  Posing as Talia, he invited Bruce to regain his vitality by way of the Lazarus Pit.  Ra’s ultimate plot was to restore Bruce to youth and then take over his body, transferring his essence into Bruce’s corporal form in the same way that he had taken over Talia.  

Aided by his new protégé, Terry McGinnis, Bruce was able to ferret out this terrible truth.  Talia was dead and her father's madness had finally consumed him beyond the point of no return.  A struggle ensued when Ra’s tried to force Bruce into the Lazarus Pit.  Terry rescued Bruce just as an electrical line fell into the pit, incinerated Ra’s.  Thus bringing a final ending to the tempestuous ordeals of both Talia al Ghul and her villainous father.    

Actresses Helen Slater and Olivia Hussey each provided the voice for Talia al Ghul with the tragic character first appearing in the forty-fourth episode of the first season of Batman: The Animated Series, ‘Off Balance.’

You experience the magnetism everyone in Sunset Cove once did, and understand why the entire town reveres her. Readers are bound to connect and empathize with both Tori and her daughter Mia in this dual POV/dual timeline story. Reading it, I was instantly tugged back to 2005, at the memory of reading Maureen Johnson's 13 Little Blue Envelopes. There's such exquisite balance between the past and present in this story, Tori's puzzle-pieced past simultaneously soothing Mia's concerns about leaving Sunset Cove while adding to them — a reminder that your choices and mistakes MUST be your own.

💜 That beautiful balance creates parallels between Mia's story and her mother's. We even see parallels between Mia and her unknown father. Both run away, fear being brave or taking a risk, and it holds them back from their true potential. Mia is so eager NOT to repeat her mother's history that she second-guesses herself constantly, afraid to make her own mistakes. Mia not only learns from her mother's journal entries, but also the lives she touched — proving the domino effect we can have on another person's lives. At the end, though...it's also a story about regret. We aren't our mistakes, but what we learn from them. It's a story about growth after the fact.

💜 The lyrics from Mia's music AND her mothers add an extra layer to this story. For the record, I did cry (reading the story's literal Last Long Song), so if you're sappy like me, have tissues at the ready.

💙 Holford beautifully encapsulates that pivitol "coming-of-age" moment that empowers any YA story. The best friends to lovers aspect is messy, realistic, and pure; a series of stolen, secret kisses, failed relationships with others in between, the fear of either ruining or losing an unspoken love story. You'll root for Mia and Britt, cry at Mia's side, and feel full of hope by the end of it all. Also, Mia's grandmothers? They are everything.

All of his PP skills are free. Diurnal Impetus, Pure Field, and Selfless Heal.

Strategy I want it known I spent like an hour looking through options to arrive at this, literally one (1) map before the random training battle where a Featherstaff shows you this exact idea.

Celeste! I like her a lot! I really wanted to get her to work, but with her general skills, she really seemed like she was only good for fighting cavs. Evasion is decent, but her raw power wasn't anything exceptional. That's when Fatal Dive caught my attention. It's impossible to guard, and deals flat damage. With the Ervelda Talisman and another HP booster, Celeste hits fantastic HP. Add the Dew, and that's another +10. Mine is currently sitting at 145 HP, dealing 72 damage to a full column with this swing. On her own, she's excellent at clearing options.

Liza exists to block hits and help recover. In all truth, I could probably swap Tatiana for Sanatio, who has natural Overheal and Holy Cradle to endure a hit, which would pop the fuck off with Yunifi. But it's late and I'll make that adjustment tomorrow, I was just rushing to finish. Anyway, I bring this up because Liza's guard also recovers HP to keep Celeste going, and if we could endure, Yunifi would be really, really funny.

Anyway, Yunifi is damage dealer 2. She is on the front line, relying on high evasion the overheal effect to survive. The retaliation is what we're aiming for. It hits three people at once, for full damage. With Retaliation Earrings, this is an incredibly hard-hitting attack. She also capitalizes on the freeze that Lhinalagos applies with massive shots.

Tatiana herself exists to overheal. She's a decent cleric besides, but I do have to admit, Sanatio is likely a better choice for the stage. Natural overheal means flexibility with the staff, and Endure effects are really good. But, on the flip side, Parting Resurrection is game-changing for an actual stage. Even if a character drops, we can revive them and keep plowing through the stage. That is, I think, the real value here.

Celeste took out like 60% of the final map. That is not an exaggeration. She could beat pretty much anything without taking almost any damage, and thanks to Parting Resurrection, even if someone did drop, they're right back the next fight. Endurance considerations were more significant than her fighting ability. The only team to do as well as Alain's. Entire teams I had expected to perform wonderfully just fell apart while Celeste tore the stage apart. I was initially fearful that I wouldn't have much that Celeste could accomplish in a team. But here we are, as the second most useful composition we devised. I'm extremely satisfied with how this turned out.

-have lwj & wwx meet as kids? wwx is open about being able to see yokai (pick some Chinese examples for later, but this'll be quicker for notes) & lwj is the only one who knows he's not a liar bc lwj is sensitive enough that the presence of yokai makes him ill? or maybe lwj doesn't yet know that that's what causes his illness. might work better, bc then his first impression of wwx is of someone who makes up wild tales and acts irrationally and talks to things that aren't there. they shouldn't be close at this point. maybe make a mention about lwj interacting with wwx immediately after wwx has been interacting with a yokai. mention that lwj had begun feeling unwell, and it gets worse when he looks directly into wwx's eyes. but, like. maybe be subtle with this.

-wwx is the one who leaves. he's being bounced around among relatives. actually, that brings up an interesting question. even tho this isn't going to be a 1:1 fusion to start with, I really don't want to put the Jiangs in place of the Fujiwaras bc the Fujiwaras are SO KIND TO NATSUME ;u; switch it up so that the town ends up being where wwx goes to college? the jiangs took him in & he's attending with a scholarship + pocket money from jfm + a job. means he's living in the dorms.

-lwj is attending the same college. the Lans are monks, and there's a temple run by a branch family where he's staying. lwj shouldn't be able to banish yokai, so maybe lxc went around randomly chanting sutras to purify the area. (check to see if this is also something that might have a basis in Chinese culture. seems like it should, but double check.) wwx comes out to see what all the yokai are making a fuss about, and finds lwj. (make their first meeting something memorable enough for wwx to be delighted to see him.) lwj leaves the encounter feeling a bit dizzy. his family has since told him that his sickness is due to spiritual sensitivity to yokai, and he notes that even tho lxc had purified the area around the temple for him, after speaking with wwx, he'd started to feel faint effects.

-if looking at wwx's eyes is what's causing the dissonance, then that's going to have to be addressed. can lwj build up a tolerance? has he already been doing so, and lxc was just being overprotective? can one of wwx's yokai buddies provide some sort of charm or talisman that would relieve the symptoms in this case? (the wens as yokai, tho!)

-scene I really want to get to--lwj and wwx washing up together at the sink in the temple bathroom. wwx stayed the night, or is going to stay the night. lwj looks up into the large mirror as they stand side-by-side, and as wwx grins at him in the reflection, lwj notices that wwx's pupils are slitted. he's shocked, and turns to look, but wwx just turns as well, still smiling. there's nothing odd in his expression, only happiness, but lwj starts to feel dizzy, his stomach gets that fluttery feeling. wwx's eyes look normal, but there are stories about mirrors showing the truth of things. perhaps, like the yokai, it takes a certain level of spiritual awareness to see his eyes as they really are. lwj's been feeling strange around wwx off and on the whole time, but he put it down to falling in love. now so many of those physical reactions can be attributed to something about wwx possibly being part yokai. it feels like the ground has fallen out from beneath him. he doesn't know if he can trust his own heart.

-do the Lans have a one true love thing going on here? is it possible it's related to yokai? either as a curse or a blessing?

-as far as wwx goes, he doesn't lie about being able to see yokai, but he has learned that things are easier if he doesn't react to them around people, and doesn't advertise that he can see them. when they show up around the college, he's calmer about it than Natsume is.

-oh!! keep in the bit with the yokai fish pond! wwx can draw them for lwj.

-is there any way we can work in the Moon-Splitting Festival? I'd love for there to be an excuse for lwj to see wwx all dolled up during a yokai competition. lwj would have to be able to see the others, tho. what allowed Tanuma to see what was going on during the mansion gathering? or was that an exorcist thing where some of the shikigami got loose? lots of eps to rewatch in order to work all this out.

-maybe work in lwj getting strong enough not to be affected by wwx's eyes with wwx falling for him. as they interact, lwj stays by wwx's side to support him when things get sticky. he's the first one to both believe wwx and to have no ulterior motives. the matoba exorcists (Jin clan) want wwx's power & the Book of Names under their control. some of his classmates who found out were only wanting to see yokai, either for personal interest or to somehow use proof of the supernatural to get rich and famous. who's in Natori's role, tho? do we need anyone for that? I guess it could be jgy...that would give him ties to the exorcists, but also leave room for him to be on good terms with lxc. also, I never did fully trust Natori. I think he would act in what he feels is Natsume's best interest, disregarding Natsume's choices or what might be best for the book.

-ohhh am I gonna lose the whole mask aesthetic by switching to Chinese critters? booooo I like that aesthetic.

-instead of the ep where Natsume loses his ability to see yokai, we could do a curse where wwx loses his sight entirely. maybe that's when lwj kisses him. wwx is hanging out in the forest, waiting for the yokai who cursed him to approach, but it's lwj who comes upon him. maybe this is lwj's turning point? he accepts his feelings, punishes himself for stealing a kiss, then begins working in earnest to reach a point where he can not only look wwx in the eyes without feeling ill, but actually support and protect him when necessary.

Evelyn Elise Wylde - yes her initials are EEW - is a fourteen year old demihuman, and granddaughter of the famous Orokin scientist Doctor Cedric Wylde - though their relationship is one of father and daughter so they refer to each other as such. She identifies as bisexual and her pronouns are she/her.

Evelyn is 5 feet 6 six inches (66 inches) in height and is usually seen wearing cleated snow shoes, jeans, winter snow pants, a long sleeve shirt, a jacket that she's "borrowing" from her girlfriend, @doll-the-zombie-drone, and a magic talisman from her late mother that protects her from harm. She has elven ears, a round face, soft lips, tanned skin, freckles, a button nose, piercing sapphire-blue eyes with slitted pupils, braided shoulder-length silver hair with purple, blue, and light green highlights, fangs, sharp claws for nails, well toned muscles, and an Australian accent. However, her most notable features are her molted green prehensile lizard tail, the tip of which boasts a razor-sharp blade, a pair of bat wings she keeps hidden under her jacket when she's not using them, and - though she'd almost always hiding it - a vivisection scar on her chest. Unless you want to be punched in the face at full force, it would be wise to not touch it.

Depending on who she's talking to, her personality varies wildly. Thanks to her childhood she has trust issues and is slow to warm up to people. Of course, once she does she goes from cold and distant to a lovable goofball cinnamon roll who loves to snuggle. She is also capable of purring and adores physical affection - that being said, don't touch her tail without permission, as it's extremely sensitive. She is surprisingly touch-starved and as a result physical affection has become her love language. She also adores praise, and especially likes being called a "good girl." The one thing that remains constant throughout the two sides of her personality is that she's a massive tomboy and ready for a fight at any time, including when she's asleep. The girl keeps a hatchet under her pillow for Void's sake. She is also autistic - high functioning - and has a hard time telling whether or not someone's being sarcastic, subtly making fun of her, or being genuine. She's also also insecure, has abandonment issues, hates loud noises, and is terrified of driving her loved ones away.

After learning the truth of the Absolute Solver in episode six, Evie has developed a strong phobia of Solver-infected Drones and the AS itself.

Thanks to Evie's great great grandfather, who's name has been stricken from history, she and her entire bloodline are effectively immortal and while they can be killed, they will eventually come back to life. Preventative measures can be taken to slow the self-resurrection process, but it cannot be stopped. The family also has supernatural powers, with Evie specializing in Pyromancy, or fire magic. She also also has a familiar - a phoenix she named Sol. She is very protective of Sol and will deck you without hesitation if you hurt her bird.

In terms of combat, her options are surprisingly varied. Not only does she have the aforementioned fire magic, but she is also incredibly strong, a black belt in jujitsu, carries multiple knives on her person at all times, and has a substantial collection of weapons that she can pull from and summon into her hands at will. She is also one of exactly three people who wields the Delta Solver - a variant of the Absolute Solver created by her grandfather. The Delta Solver is much less powerful than the AS, but more versatile, not sentient, lacks the biological aspect, and can only be given to others by an Admin.

As an added bonus she is capable of turning into a Disassembly Drone with blue lights instead of yellow, though she usually only uses this form to fluster her girlfriend.
