I feel the need to state that this isn’t an attack on tony but an attack on extreme tony stans and y’all reasonings.

Disclaimer before y’all dumbasses get in my comments and say stupid shit about my opinions on tony. I genuinely like tony stark. He’s a really great hero and he’s flawed but good. And he tries. He tries so hard. But he’s still so flawed, but that’s part of why he’s such a good hero, because sometimes, he’s the most relatable and human out of most of them, and y’all assholes seem too forget that.

I just realized how fucking much I hate tony stans like. It took me a second to realize why tho since I actually do like tony stark. But I realize, I’m really just extreme anti tony Stan narratives. At least half the time, people act like tony was never wrong and could do no wrong. Even tho part of the reason people even like him is because of his fuck ups and want to do better or right. Because he was real and had his struggles and it’s so easy to sympathize with him and such. And yet, tony stans will still sit there and act like he has literally never done any wrong. He’s done a shit ton of wrong in his life, which is part of the reason he’s constantly wanting to do better and work harder and help more people. Like it’s literally a whole fucking part of what makes him who he fucking is. Then you’ll sit there and act like Ultron wasn’t 100% his fault. I’m so fucking sick of hearing the whole, “no one listened to him. He said what was coming and no one cared. Blah. Blah. Fucking blah.” Bitch, I can’t listen to someone who ain’t fucking talking to me. He deliberately created Ultron behind his team’s back when he hadn’t even talked to them about what was to come until he royally fucked up after the fact. But everyone pretends that the reason they weren’t ready for thanos is because no one listened to him. Shut tf up. Like.

And the whole accords thing. Like. It’s straight bullshit. And tony was on his shit when he thought they were a good idea. And like, a huge motivating factor for it is his guilt, cause from iron man 1-3, it is extremely fucking unlikely he would’ve fucking signed it then. Probably not even after the first avengers. And who’s to really say if he would’ve signed it if it wasn’t for the fucking mom that confronted him. And like, i understand his intentions in both age of Ultron and I’m civil war. And his intentions were good and I get it. But like, you still massively fucked up. And what pisses me off about him in civil war is that, they don’t need to be held accountable for the battle of New York cause that was strictly the government’s fault. No one else’s. Age of Ultron? Strictly Tony’s and partially Bruce’s fucking fault. So why does the whole team need to be punished for him not talking to his fucking team? Civil war? Both Steve and Tony’s cause neither of them would sit the fuck down and actually fucking compromise. Steve was too fucking stubborn and tony was too fucking blinded by arrogance and guilt and naïveté. “Do it now or it’ll be done to us later.” That shit. wow. Like, bro, it’s already being fucking done to you. You have no real other options. Sign or stop. That’s not a real choice bro. Wtf. And in what world do you think that’s a good argument to sign?nah. So tony was gonna ignore that rule for peter or he was gonna force peter to reveal himself which is fucked on both ends.

Then, he ignored the accords when he went to Steve in Siberia and wanted it off record so he wouldn’t have to be held accountable like the others would’ve if they came back. So fuck out of here. And we know, tony doesn’t follow fucking rules. The only people he was willing to listen to half the time was pepper and Steve. And that wasn’t always either. He was sure as hell not going to follow every rule laid out even tho he’s the reason it got as far as it did. And what really really pisses me off, and I really didn’t think about this til now, is the fact that like, he wouldn’t trust his own fucking suits in the hands of the government. But he’s willing to trust his teammates’ lives and missions in the hands of the government? Really? Gonna trust Bruce’s life in the hands of secretary Ross who has been wanting to experiment on Bruce and get his hands on him? Wanna trust your teammates’ lives in the hands of the people who repeatedly lie to you and have their own agendas that they will no doubt invoke onto the team? Man. Like, fuck the team, they’re not the only people who are affected by this. You’re affecting hundreds if not more, heroes fucking lives just because you’re fucking feeling guilty for your own fucking creation even tho you’re not gonna follow the rules you fucking signed.

Sidenote, Steve Rogers may be my fave, but he’s not why I made this post. At least, not the sole reason, part of why was an “anti Steve” tagged post that was saying “you’re either team iron man or team dumbass.” And I’ve made a lot of posts like this before, even without factoring in Steve, but it irritates me when people act like Steve was the only fuck up. Post Runs White Nationalist Propaganda Masquerading As Law-Talkin’

When you attack birthright citizenship, I know what you are really doing. I know you are really trying to lay down intellectual covering fire, under which your argument for white nationalism can be brought to the masses. I know you are afraid of the browning of the country, I know you’ve crunched the numbers and have come to the obvious conclusion that you can’t deport your way into a future of white majorities. I know you have two options: double down on apartheid rule, or strip away rights from non-white people who you can’t stop from living here. The Electoral College is going to do the work of the former, so when you come for birthright citizenship, I know you are fighting for the latter goal.

I also know that you count on decent people being too weak or frightened to stand up to you when you try to infect people with your bigotry and stupidity.

You can’t get an op-ed in the Washington Post if you titled it “America Needs To Be Ethnically Cleansed Of Illegals.” Somebody over there would notice that as inappropriate. But, if you call it: “Citizenship shouldn’t be a birthright,” well the Post ran that very piece of racist drivel yesterday. I’m sure somebody over there noticed that as inappropriate too… but somebody else probably said, “Hey, there are good people on both sides.”

The argument against birthright citizenship is a common one in white nationalist circles. But unlike most of their stink, this one comes perfumed with an air of Constitutional interpretation. That thin veneer occasionally gets the dumbass argument repeated or published by mainstream sources, because otherwise intelligent and upstanding mainstream non-lawyers can be easily intimidated by things that sound like the have some basis in the Constitution.

Essentially, the argument comes in three parts:

1. The original Constitution did not define “citizenship.” (Non-lawyer mind = blown) 2. Birthright citizenship stems from a misinterpretation of the Fourteenth Amendment. (Non-lawyer mind = confused) 3. Birthright citizenship encourages illegal immigration. (Non-lawyer mind = intrigued)

The Post op-ed was written by Michael Anton, a former Trump national security adviser. It quotes the work of Edward Ehler, an anti-immigration author. It hits all of these classic points.

1.

The notion that simply being born within the geographical limits of the United States automatically confers U.S. citizenship is an absurdity — historically, constitutionally, philosophically and practically.

2.

Constitutional scholar Edward Erler has shown that the entire case for birthright citizenship is based on a deliberate misreading of the 14th Amendment.

3.

Practically, birthright citizenship is, as Erler put it, “a great magnet for illegal immigration.” This magnet attracts not just millions of the world’s poor but also increasingly affluent immigrants.

Usually, these central premises stand unopposed. Lawyers don’t fight these white nationalists on the law, because their interpretation is so stupid that it’s barely worth their time. And liberals don’t fight on the law, they fight on the policy that immigration is good for the country, a point on which there is overwhelming evidence.

But, I have the time. As a wise man once said: “If the milk turns out to be sour, I ain’t the type of pussy that’d drink it.”

1. The Constitution didn’t define federal citizenship, because it was taken as an article of faith that citizenship flowed from the individual states, and not the federal government. Our entire concept of “diversity jurisdiction” rests on the concept of people being citizens of different states and not one country as a whole. That’s doesn’t mean that the Founders thought birthright citizenship was “absurd.” It just means that they didn’t think it was their call to make.

2. The Constitution does weigh in on the issue with the Fourteenth Amendment. Everybody agrees that the whole point was to grant citizenship to newly freed slaves, citizenship that was taken from them by the Dred Scott decision.[1] To give African-Americans citizenship, it had to be as a matter of birth. There was no other way. You couldn’t do it through whether their parents were citizens, because Dred Scott said their parents were not. You couldn’t do it as a one-time grant to newly freed slaves, because that would leave out all already free blacks. The only way to do the thing we all agree they were trying to accomplish was to make citizenship attach upon birth.

WHERE IS THE MISINTERPRETATION? These white assholes keep saying that we’re misreading the Fourteenth Amendment. HOW? The writers of the Fourteenth Amendment wanted to do a thing. They did it in the only way they could. THEY WROTE IT DOWN. Where’s the freaking confusion?

If you pin one of these jerks down, they’ll start talking about Native Americans. The Fourteenth Amendment didn’t confer citizenship to Native Americans, who were clearly born here, and thus, they argue, citizenship wasn’t meant to be a birthright. I have little patience for people who use our racism towards the First Americans to justify racism towards New Americans, but there you go. If you think that our treatments towards Native Americans was a feature instead of a bug, that’s your argument.

3. Birthright citizenship is, almost exclusively, a “New World” phenomenon. In Europe and Africa, citizenship generally flows from the parents, not the place of birth.

Why? Well… slavery. Other New World nations had the same problem America did after the Civil War. Having a system where rights flow from the parents is UNWORKABLE in a society made up of newly freed people. Almost all the countries in the Western Hemisphere tie citizenship to the land.

That reality means we can test the white nationalist assumptions that birthright citizenship has the unintended consequence of creating a perverse incentive for illegal immigration. When we look at Europe do we see countries that are free from the challenges presented by illegal immigration? No? Then I think these white nationalists need to STFU and come up with an argument that is grounded in REALITY.

************************* This stuff isn’t hard, folks. Birthright citizenship is NOT a controversial proposition. Mainstream media is hell-bent on creating an argument where there isn’t one, in their endless effort to normalize white supremacists. Not all arguments are created equal, and it really shouldn’t be too much to ask a national publication like the Washington Post to be able to READ THE FIRST SENTENCE OF THE FOURTEENTH AMENDMENT before publishing white nationalists talking points.

People who make arguments against birthright citizenship are racist, dumb, or both. Here endeth the lesson.

[1] As an aside, it’s an article of faith that Dred Scott necessitated the Fourteenth Amendment, but you could just as easily argue that Dred Scott was wrong on the law at the time it was decided. Maybe if we weren’t so quick to excuse racist white men as “trapped by their times,” we’d more easily recognize that.

On Saturday, in response to a question from ESPN’s Mark Saxon, Dexter Fowler voiced his opposition to the Trump administration’s failed attempt to ban entry to the U.S. by nationals of seven Muslim-majority countries, including Iran, where his wife Darya was born and many of his extended family still live. The story got picked up on social media, and Fowler quickly became the target of waves of criticism and abuse.

The volume and intensity of the backlash was shocking. Here’s just a small sample of some of the comments made in response to the story: “We pay your salary. I don’t give a shit about your political views!” “Maybe he should have brought them over sooner then he wouldn’t have a wet diaper.” “Fuck fowler who cares what he thinks.” “Why is it that the only athletes that are displeased with the President are black? Who’s the one’s being racist?” “Why the hell do these over paid actors and sports figures think WE GIVE A FUCK WHAT THEY HAVE TO SAY. Just do what you are paid to do and that is to entertain normal Americans.” “I have no patience anymore for dumbass stupid ass people who keep assisting that illegal aliens are simply immigrants.” “Many Presidents have done this, even Obummer. Fowler is just butthurt.” “He can share all his contract money with the immigrants.” “I don’t want to hear that b******* we pay him to play ball and that’s it.” “Fowler deserves a fastball right between his racist eyes.” “Shut up and go enjoy your $80 million how stupid.” “You’re paid to play, not to spew your political bullshit.” “Uneducated about what the Pres is trying to do for Blacks. No one gave a shit about any of these comments, though, because all of them were posted on a Facebook page called “Chicago Cubs True Fans” (I have no idea, either). Here are some more: “Glad he left.” “Traitor.” “That’s why he went to St. Louis.” “Well he obviously dont like winning hating trump and going to the cards.” “Guess it’s time to burn my Cubs Fowler jersey!” “Go to your St Loooey hellhole and stay there… an oh yeah, STFU.” “Thank Goodness we got rid of him, another crybaby…” “Go Cubs! Go Trump!” “Dexter just became the enemy even more now for me.” “Shut the fuck up traitor!! Who cares what you have to say!” “And I care what you think, why??? You overpaid incredibly lucky, person. Glad your no longer in Chicago!!!” “He isn’t worthy of the phrase former cub.” “Glad your gone BLM MAN FOWLER, and in the mean time , just maybe you can get your head out of clintons corrupt ass ? FUCK YOU SNOWFLAKE MFER.”

This went on and on and on—Cubs fans, hundreds of them, taking time out of their day to hurl cruel and in many cases plainly racist invective towards a player who doesn’t even play for their team anymore.

But as usual, the only abuse Baseball Twitter cared about or bothered to acknowledge was the abuse posted to “St. Louis Cardinals True Fans” (again, no idea). By now this process is so rote that there’s little need for me to explain what happened. The anonymous parasite behind the account @BestFansStLouis took screenshots of some of the worst comments and posted them to Twitter. They went viral, first and foremost among Cubs fans. The c o l o s s a l p i l l a r o f w a s p e g g s internet’s healthy and edifying aggregation ecosystem, from HardballTalk to The Comeback to SB Nation to Uproxx, jumped at the prefab content. Monday arrived and we hit the thinkpiece stage. Cardinals fans objected to being singled out once again, and here I am, writing the same shit I always do.

This is a tremendously efficient feedback loop, and it kicks into gear whenever any of the millions of people who proclaim themselves Cardinals fans do something stupid or offensive, and—let’s be clear—does so only when that happens. It kicks into gear when Cardinals fans say awful things to protesters outside Busch Stadium, but not when Orioles fans get physically violent with protesters outside Camden Yards. It gets activated on a massive and instantaneous scale when a single anonymous Twitter user lies about hearing slurs at Busch on a national TV broadcast, but not when David Price himself reports hearing racist taunts from Red Sox fans at Fenway. It’s why Oakland A’s fans are not notorious for their homophobia. It’s why this t-shirt is infamous and these aren’t.

And it’s why the story that got reported over the last couple days wasn’t that Fowler had been attacked by Cubs fans, or even that he’d been attacked by baseball fans in general—or by Facebook users, or by morons and bigots, or by older, conservative white men, all of which are true. The story was only that he’d been attacked by Cardinals fans. To report it any other way would risk disrupting the feedback loop.

There isn’t, and there never has been, any evidence that this is a useful way to frame this story or others like it. There is no evidence that the Cardinals have a singularly racist fanbase. There is no evidence that, as Will Leitch argues, Cardinals fans are disproportionately from rural areas, which are presumed to be more racist than urban areas (the gap is probably smaller than you think). There is only—there has only ever been—the @BestFansStLouis feedback loop, lizard-brain sports-fan tribalism, heaps of confirmation bias, and more than a small amount of naked classism and snobbery.

I am so unbelievably fucking tired of having to talk about this. I’ve given up hope that the cycle is ever going to end; the incentives—social and professional, emotional and economic—for the people involved to perpetuate it are just too great. But here’s my request, if you’re one of those people: for the love of God, try to be a little more honest about what you’re doing. If you like tweeting about the awful racist meth-addled BFIB, be honest about the fact that you just want to feel a little momentary superiority, to be comforted by the sense that your fanbase isn’t the Bad One. If you’re a baseball blogger writing up a @BestFansStLouis screenshot, be honest about why you know that post is going to do good numbers. If you want to wax soporific about America Is Us and We Are America and What It All Means, or if you want legitimize an unsubstantiated, counterproductive narrative by reaffirming your status as One of the Good Cardinals Fans, be honest about it, even if only with yourself.

Just don’t tell yourself or anyone else that you’re waging a high-minded battle against the forces of ignorance and injustice by posting get_a_brain_morans.jpeg for the thousandth goddamn time. No one seriously engaged in that fight has ever given a moment’s thought to who was or wasn’t in which brand of children’s-game laundry, and anyone who does—anyone whose reaction to bigotry or abuse depends on the fanbase it’s coming from—is only admitting that they’re privileged enough not to have to give a shit in the first place.
