Related to my previous Rockstar Eddie Munson x Unimpressed Normal Guy Steve pose, I think when the RPF fanfiction comes onto Steve's radar he is extremely pissy about it.
I didn't really have an idea of when the original post was taking place, whether it was set in the cannon era and he finds out about RPF as it becomes a thing or if it's closer to the present day, but either way I think of Steve as someone who isn't very in tune with pop culture beyond a very shallow level of knowing only the very biggest music and movie icons by sight.
So either way fanfiction and RPF are not on his radar at all until he starts dating Eddie and starts being aware of his boyfriend's influence on pop culture and hoard of die-hard fans.
Eventually, Robin ends up sending him links to some truly terrible Sold Myself to One Direction RPF self-insert fanfictions centered around his partner. At first, Steve thinks it's funny because these people all write Eddie as super suave and sexy and imagining Eddie saying some of the dialogue makes him laugh harder than he has maybe in his entire life.
Until he skims through five or six of them and realizes that once you get through the more asinine details, the basic story elements are remarkably familiar.
MC gets reluctantly dragged to a place where Corroded Coffin is. MC is uninterested in whatever is happening. Eddie spots them in the crowd looking uninterested and instantly falls in love. Eddie woos a continually unimpressed MC until they fall in love and live happily ever after, Amen.
Steve has to put the screen away and just stare into the middle distance for a while once he realizes his real life is the stuff of a 14 year old's delusional fantasy.

Honeyed Kisses Against Tender Flesh (Fem!Reader x Hayato Suo) - NSFW
Tumblr media
Author’s Note: I got carried away with this one. But shoutout to those of us who write for Hayato Suo cuz we really are working with crumbs. Like he’s whatever we say he is until we get more information.
Synopsis: Your friend Kotoha and brother Hiragi are worried about your relationship with Suo. It all comes to a head at the beach, to your embarrassment and Suo's delight. No big deal, though; you’ll just have sex against Hiragi’s truck or whatever.
Content Warning: I’m a really bad judge when it comes to dark content. To me, it’s a spectrum and while I don’t consider this particular story truly dark, others might. So I encourage you to read the warnings and make the best decision for yourself:
Smut with a plot, the obsessive kind of love, possessiveness, hickeys, bruises, biting, spit, enjoyment of public humiliation, teasing, licking of blood, sex/nudity in public, super brief mention of a golden shower, praising/worshipping language, unprotected sex, no-pulling out despite being asked (wrap it up, folks!), like he straight up says “nah.”
Also, please note that you are written as Hiragi’s sister in this story. I do not expand on your relationship, so you might be his half-sister, full-sister, step-sister, adopted sister, etc. I say this for my readers who may hold a racial/ethnic identity different from Hiragi, hoping that you can still feel like this story is for you (because it is <3). Minors Do Not Interact.

Tumblr media
On a day when you and your Bofurin friends decide to visit the beach, the unforgiving intensity of the sun makes you feel as though you’re simmering in a boiling pot. No one except you is ill-prepared; the men are wearing various colored shorts that seemingly match their personalities, and their unclothed torsos are on full, unapologetic display.
Kotoha, sitting on a beach towel next to you, is in a three-piece halter bikini set with a sheer sarong skirt that accentuates her curves. Even your brother Hiragi has abandoned his usual band shirt to showcase his well-toned arms and abs. You find it pretty horrifying but good for him, you think.
It’s hard not to be jealous of all the bare, suntanned skin as you take inventory of your fit. You are wearing an oversized grey hoodie and sweatpants combo that covers every inch of you. Underneath your hefty clothes is a simple but cute black two-piece bikini you originally planned to show off that day.
You are roasting under the sun's rays—and in your anger—as you glare at the person responsible for your attire: Hayato Suo.
He’s sitting on the beach towel with you, his perfectly parted hair blowing softly against the breeze. Despite his attempt at trying to appear inconspicuous in reading his book, you can tell that he’s very much aware of your disdain for him with the way the corners of his mouth twitch upwards.
Kotaho lowers her sunglasses so she’s looking at you over the rim of the frames.
“Why are you wearing a sweatshirt and sweatpants at the beach of all places? I’m getting hot just looking at you.”
You shift uncomfortably, having hoped that this was not a conversation that would come up. You instinctively pull the collar of the sweatshirt higher until it’s tucked snuggly under your chin. “It’s not so bad! I just have to stay hydrated!”
Kotoha leans closer to you and lowers her voice, obviously trying not to catch the attention of Suo. “But why? Is this a cry for help because of you-know-who? Say the word, and I will scream.”
You and Kotoha have become close since you applied for a position to work at Cafe Pothos. She was your boss, but she’s also the embodiment of a girls-girl. You bonded over cooking and annoying brother figures; there wasn’t a thing you didn’t know about each other.
So color her shocked when one day she picked up her cell phone after receiving a series of texts that were coming in rapid succession. She had assumed the sender was Umemiya, but instead, they were from you!
8:50 PM: OMG 8:50 PM: You won’t believe what just happened to meeeeeeee ihfdnf 8:51 PM: SUO! SUO! 8:52 PM: He KISSED me! 8:55 PM: HELLO?! The love of my life just put his tongue in my mouth and you HAVE THE AUDACITY TO NOT ANSWER!? I’m heading to the cafe right fucking now.
Kotoha was confused, not because she didn’t think you deserved the world—you deserved the world and more. She was confused because she couldn’t picture you and Suo together. He was pleasant whenever he came into the cafe, only ordering tea and always leaving a big tip. But other than that, she didn't know much about him, and no one did, and that was a difficult thing to accomplish in a small town.
So when you finally ran into the cafe, practically colliding into the glass door as you shuffled in, Kotoha poured you a fresh cup of coffee, sat you down, and asked if you were sure about this.
Were you sure it was a good idea to date a guy who wore an eyepatch, had never been seen eating, and had a different story about his life every time he was asked? You assured her that Suo was the man of your dreams and you’ve never been more sure of something in your life. And while Kotoha may not know much about Suo, there were small moments that felt as though you were gradually building up to this kiss all along.
The way he’d offer to walk you home even though it was out of his way, how his hand would brush up against yours and linger when passing you coins to pay for his tea, and god, that smile of his that usually didn’t reach his eyes but did when he was talking to you.
You were adamant that this was something you wanted.
You didn’t exactly come out as “official,” though. In a strange way, your relationship just “was.”
Your friends acted as though you had always been together, and the way Suo became a constant in your life—walking you home after every shift from the cafe, texting and calling you more often, holding your hand in public, and taking you out on dates to your favorite places—made it difficult to remember what life was like before him. You quickly became the shadow of the other, and not without concern from Kotoha and Hiragi. Some would call your love for each other smothering, but to you; it was anything but that—it was perfect.
“Everything is fine, Kotoha, I promise.”
She lets out a sigh and pulls her sunglasses back up. You can see the reflection of the guys in her dark shades—Hiragi, Umemiya, Sakura, and Kaji playing volleyball, sand kicking up as shouts of, “get that, doofus!’ and “who are you calling doofus!?” traveling over to you but being drowned out by the roar of waves breaking shore.
A bead of sweat travels down the side of your face, and you look up at the sun, hoping to will it away with a pitiful look.
“Why not take off that burdensome outfit, sweetheart?”
Your head snaps in the direction of Suo, the tone in his voice–thick with faux concern–alluding to the pleasure he’s getting from watching you like this. He’s all too aware of what you’re hiding—he’s the culprit who put you in this situation.
He shrugs innocently, “you’re developing sweat stains,” you follow his finger as he points at you. To your horror, giant wet spots have formed at your armpits and collar. You groan, the realization that if you don’t shed these clothes soon, you’ll likely meet your untimely demise via heatstroke—and that’s a very unsexy way to go.
A shaky hand grips the drawstring of the sweatshirt, and you peel it off with the sweatpants following shortly after. Before you can set the clothes beside you, Kotaha lets out an audible gasp. You wince, knowing that your movements and her sharp intake of breath will surely draw the boys' attention—a result that you were trying your damnedest to avoid.
You thought Hiragi’s booming voice would be the first to reach your ears, but instead, it’s Sakura’s.
“What happened to YOU?!”
The volleyball spinning through the air hits him square in the chest; a loud thud has him doubling over in pain, but it’s not enough to break away Hiragi’s stare from the bruises and hickeys that litter your neck, chest, and thighs.
After gathering himself, Sakura stands up and turns his attention to Suo, “You should really keep a better watch over your girl. She’s obviously getting her butt kicked somewhere-”
Sakura is unable to finish before Hiragi interjects. He takes a step forward, and if you weren’t on sand, you’d be almost positive that the sheer force would shake the earth. “Suo, what did you do to my sister's skin?”
You stare at Hiragi, deep veins already protruding from his forehead. If looks could kill, Suo would be dead right now. You give a sideglance at your boyfriend, who has two hands raised near his head and his shoulders shrugged up to appear non-threatening.
“I am NOT doing this right now!” You proclaim, hurriedly picking up the keys to Hiragi’s car and padding through the sand, trying your damnedest to escape the sound of rising voices.
Tumblr media
Suo follows you soon after de-escalating the situation. Assuring Hiragi that he may have gotten carried away with the amount of hickeys and bruises he left on your skin wasn’t easy by any means, but you two were both consenting adults, so there wasn’t much Hiragi could do anyhow. He desperately wanted to add that you didn’t mind the bruises when they were happening to you—but that didn’t seem wise.
Hiragi’s truck is parked next to the property line between the beach and the expanse of forest. When you arrived, the parking lot was full of people, but beach-goers packed their belongings and left as the day neared its end.
Suo can’t see you as he approaches the truck's passenger side, so he assumes you’re on the driver's side. As he rounds the corner, he’s met with the sight of you bending over and attempting to fish the keys off the ground, which must have fallen. The sight of your ass completely swallowing the seat of your bikini bottoms has him suddenly leaning against the car for support and blood flowing south. Even with one eye covered, he can see the outline of your puffy pussy. The bikini is much better, he thinks to himself.
You turn around, hearing the sound of gravel shifting quietly—hoping that your brother hasn’t followed you, but it’s Suo.
“Well, that was awk-“ you begin, but you're cut off. The fluidity and quickness of his motions still surprise and catch you off guard. He pins you in place to the truck with his body—chest to chest.
You can see arousal churning in his eye as his now rock-hard cock presses against your thigh. At that moment, you’re thankful that the shade of the trees shrouds this side of the truck and that anyone coming from the beach would need to walk around the vehicle to catch you in the act.
For Suo, the build-up of knowing what you were trying to hide from the group and the eventual reveal of his handiwork had given him one hell of a rush. Being in on the secret was fun, but the way Hiragi’s eyes darted over your skin, the way he caught Kaji’s cheeks reddening as his eyes swept over your exposed and marked-up flesh, it was practically unbearable.
Suo’s hand tugs at the string of your bikini top, and it doesn’t take long before the flimsy fabric releases and drifts to your feet. You shiver as cool air licks at your breasts and nipples, hardening the sensitive buds upon contact. It isn’t until Suo’s warm hands cup and massage your breasts that you let out a whimper; his touch feels firm and needy, delivering pinches and squeezes to the over-sensitive and bruised flesh.
“S-someone could c-catch us!” You protest in a hushed whisper, but you’re not pushing him away—you tilt your head back to rest it against the truck and arch your spine to give him more access to you.
“They’d be so lucky,” he growls softly into your neck.
As your stomach twists in arousal and nervousness, you know that the Hayato Suo who is fondling you in the parking lot against your brother's truck is a different Hayato than the one your friends interact with.
Suo is often poised and has immense control over his emotions, but sometimes, he gets so overcome by desire that it feels like a gaseous cloud is seeping into your pores and lungs.
You’ve become a welcome victim to the Suo that likes to grip you so desperately that he leaves bruises, bites you so hard that sometimes it breaks the skin, and fucks you so roughly that you’re confident that you’ve experienced the closest thing you can to death.
“Suo, we shouldn’t. They saw my bruises and the hickeys. Toma might kill you.”
“You can’t convince me that this isn’t something you want. This,” he presses two fingers against the seat of your bikini, which sink into the moistness of you, “tells me otherwise.”
Your face grows hot because he’s right. You’re not innocent in your shared dynamic like Kotoha, and Hiragi would like to think—you crave him just as much as he craves you.
You’re just as much of a thrill-seeker as he is but you two have to be quick; anyone in your group could come looking for you any second—and nothing would destroy your arousal more than Hiragi seeing your boyfriend fucking you in public. Suo would enjoy that, though.
It’s as though he can read your mind because Suo is pulling down your bikini bottoms so that they hang around your ankles.
His lips are on yours, his kisses somehow hungrier than his touches. Suo kisses you as though he’s found solace against the plush of your lips and the treasure housed within your mouth. He tilts his head so his tongue can explore every inch of you deeper; he’s unapologetically devouring you.
When he finally pulls away for air, his voice is low and almost gravelly, a departure from his usual calm tone.
“You make me become the most disrespectful version of myself, Y/N.”
His fingers roll and pinch at your nipples, but his eye is on yours. His gaze is intense, and even though he looks at you as though you are his prey and he is your predator, the last thing you want to do is look away.
He continues, “I want nothing more than to be the nice, sweet boyfriend your friends and brother want me to be, but you turn me into someone I don’t recognize.”
He’s pushing his shorts down, and you groan at the sight of him. His dick sits straight up against his abdomen with a slight curve, an aggressive vein pulsates on the side, and the crimson tip of it is smeared in an ungodly amount of precum. How can such a pretty dick look so angry?
Without much prep or warning, he pushes into your wet sex; he’s so deep so quickly that your body jerks reactively.
He can’t hold back the moan that escapes his lips at finally burying himself in you. His mouth has found purchase against your neck; both he and you can feel your pulse quickening, firing rapidly against his tongue as it reaches out to lick at your skin.
“When I look at you, just as you are, I want to ruin you. So if that means I’m covering you with bruises, hickeys, or the most intimate parts of me, so be it.”
He sinks his teeth into your neck, and the sharp pain makes your eyes roll back. The searing sensation doesn't last long as his tongue laps up the droplets of blood that bubble from the punctures.
“Tell me that you’re just as obsessed with me as I am with you,” his fingers are digging into the soft flesh of your thighs as he holds your legs around his waist, allowing him to bounce you on his cock..
“H-Hayato, I’m just as obsessed with you, baby. I promise.”
And you mean it. You’ve never felt a love quite so all-consuming and suffocating. He’s explored every inch of your body; at first, the way his eyes drank you in made you squirm, but he assured you that he was simply appreciating what was his—you wouldn’t fault an art curator for appraising the Mona Lisa, would you, Y/N? No? Then let me be.
Suo has licked parts of you with enthusiasm, parts that you’d be embarrassed to admit to anyone.
And for you, the taste of him is just as nourishing. When he pulls your head back by your hair, his hungry eye communicating to you without him having to say it, you find yourself eagerly opening your mouth and accepting his spit on your outstretched tongue.
The good girl muttered in his smooth voice afterward, and his infamous smile that reaches his eyes when he looks at you makes your clit twitch.
It doesn’t matter if it’s his spit, cum, or other golden liquid of his, you want it all.
During intimacy, Suo tears you down to the most basic, hedonistic version of yourself—his delivery never includes harsh language in the traditional sense—he would absolutely never call you out of your name. You are far too important to be called something derogatory. Sometimes you’ll refer to yourself as “his whore” or “his slutty girl,” and it will make him leak so much precum he has to catch his breath, but he hasn’t reached a point in which he has personally referred to you as those titles…yet.
For now, he uses deft fingers and honeyed words dripping in veiled threats of orgasm denial and overstimulation to push you to the precipice of your pleasure—and you trust him to build you back up afterward with softly cooed hymns of worship and strokes of your tender skin. To Suo, you are a goddess, a deity to be revered. To Suo, you are everything.
And it isn’t until moments like this that you see his mask slip. Your usually stoic boyfriend's mouth opening and closing in pleasure the same way that yours is, soft guttural moans escaping his lips and his brow furrowing, obviously about to lose control to you—-for you.
“You are everything, dove. You are my everything.” He groans as your silky walls clench around him, clutching him for dear life.
“You like it when I compliment you, pretty girl?”
You give him a grunt of approval, feeling yourself so close to becoming undone as he fills your head up with chants of his devotion.
At this point, each thrust has his dick bottoming out into your sopping-wet cunt. Pelvis to pelvis, you can feel every inch of you stretching to accommodate him. His maroon-colored pubic hair tickles at your skin, dampening at the contact of your slick as deep thuds from frantic thrusts fill the air.
And even though you’re only participating in a quickie, a rarity for you both, your cunt still drools just the same, streaks of it managing to glide down your inner thigh and leave droplets at his feet.
“S-suo,” your nails dig into his shoulders, resulting in a delicious hiss from his lips. “Y-you have to pull out! You aren’t wearing a c-condom!”
Suo presses his lips to your ear; you can barely make out what he’s saying over the soft gasps and the way he’s suckling at your earlobe that he has pulled between his teeth.
“I can’t. You’re mine, and I want to fill you up. So you have to take it, dove. Take all of it.”
And the way Suo says it, you know that he isn’t asking; he’s telling you what he plans to do to your body because you are an extension of him–you are his, and it’s his right to cum in you without silly obstacles like “protection.”
His pounding against your cervix feels animalistic, and the force of him fucking you is making the truck rock back and forth.
You bite your lip and hold onto him for dear life as that oh-so-familiar feeling takes over. Your thighs squeeze him, and to muffle the scream bubbling up into your throat, you take a note out of Suo’s handbook and bite his shoulder so hard that he sees a hot, white flash.
In that moment, you give each other everything—all of you becomes all of him—mixing into a mess of creamy, frothy white essence that drips down balls, legs, and thighs.
Between soft kisses on the fresh hickeys and bite marks along your neck, Suo chuckles, “Hiragi is going to be upset.”

5.4 Major*
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Fem!Reader
Summary: Lily McIntyre, trainer for new SHIELD recruits at the Avengers Tower, has been in love with her best friend, Bucky Barnes, from the moment she met him. She's been content with her role of the #1 girl in Bucky's life, even if it means she has to sabotage a romantic relationship or two. It'll be worth it when he realizes that they're meant for each other, right? There's just one small problem: Lily McIntire never expected Bucky Barnes to fall for You.
Warnings: (For this part only; see Story Masterlist for general Warnings) Language, explicit sexual content (hand stuff, fingering) Minors GTFO: I don't serve your kind here.
Word Count: 900
Previously On...: Lily knows Bucky's been lying to her, and she's surmised he's on a date. That's got to end.
A/N: Posting a little early today to make up for yesterday being so late!
I've decided to postpone my break by a few days, so I will give you Chapter 6 in its entirety before I take my mini-hiatus. It's only three parts long, so I will start my break on Thursday, 5/16 and resume posting on Thursday, 5/23. It's a better place in the story to leave you, a little bit more dramatic than at the end of this chapter, like I had originally planned, lol. It felt off leaving you all here.
NOTE! The tag list is a fickle bitch, so I'm not really going to be dealing with it anymore. If you want to be notified when new story parts drop, please follow @scoonsaliciousupdates
Thank you to all those who have been reading; if you like what you've read, likes, comments, and reblogs give me life, and I truly appreciate them, and you!
You flopped your body down onto your bedsheets with a giggle. “Full marks, Sergeant,” you gasped between panting breaths. “Once again.” It was all the two of you could do to get back to your apartment without ripping each other’s clothes off.
Bucky laughed and came to lay down alongside you, propping his head up on his vibranium arm. Leaning over, he bent down to kiss you. “I couldn’t have done it without you, doll” he said with a grin, but then his face grew serious. “Seriously. It’s never been like this with other girls.”
You blushed and playfully pushed at his rock hard shoulder. “Come on, Bucky,” you said with a laugh. “You’ve already got me naked and exactly where you want me; you don’t need to sweet talk me.”
Bucky placed a hand on your sweat-slicked hip, gently turning you to your side so you were facing him. “I’m not,” he told you, searching your eyes with the utmost sincerity in his expression. He pushed back a strand of damp hair away from your face. “I’ve been with… well, a fair number of girls over the years.” At the raise of your eyebrow, he held his flesh hand up defensively. “What? I’m 105 years old, doll. I’ve been around the block.” You couldn’t hold back your laugh at that, and he kissed your nose before continuing:
“Like I said, a fair number of girls. And none of them, not a single one, ever made me feel the way I have when I’m with you.” He cupped your cheek in his hand and you felt your cheeks flame in a blush. “Come on, sugar. Don’t tell me you don’t feel it, too. That this,” he took his hand off your cheek to motion between your two bodies, “isn’t something special.”
“It’s been a little over a day, Bucky,” you chastised him gently with a smile, afraid to admit that you, too, felt this was something unique. “Maybe thirty hours?” Thirty hours in which the two of you had somehow managed to have sex eight times, not that you were counting. You couldn’t believe how quickly he was able to get it up again after he came, but he’d assured you that was his favorite side effect of the serum that had made him a super soldier. It had quickly become your favorite, too.
Bucky’s face fell, and you realized that he wasn’t going to judge you if you told him the truth, because he felt it just the same. “The best thirty hours of my life,” you clarified, tucking your fingers under his chin so you could bring his gaze back up to yours. “And yes, I feel it, too. It’s never been like this before. Not with anyone else.”
“Not even with your ex-husband?” Bucky asked with a playful smirk.
“Especially not with Conner,” you told him with a roll of your eyes. “Took me years to teach that man where my clit was, and even on his best days, he still needed a map.”
“Oh, you mean this, right here?” Bucky deftly slid his hand between your thighs, finding your hub of nerves almost instinctively and began to lightly trace it with his finger, sending an electric tingle through your body.
“Fuck, yes,” you exhaled, reaching up to grab Bucky’s shoulder for support as he increased the pressure. He moved his metal arm from under his head and slid it behind your shoulders as he pulled you flush with his chest.
“I got you, sweet girl,” he murmured into your hair as he moved his fingers faster against you, occasionally dipping them down to your entrance to collect some of your slick for lubrication. You hitched a leg up over his hip to allow him better access to your core.
“Jesus, Bucky,” you moaned, feeling yourself building to the crescendo. Taking your hand off his shoulder, you grabbed his wrist, guiding his movements so you could grind your desperate cunt against his hand.
“Do you want my fingers, sugar?” Bucky panted. You looked up at him to find his gaze locked on where his hand had vanished between your thighs, his pupils completely blown from lust. “Do you want me to fuck you with my fingers until you squirt all over me?”
You couldn’t even get out a coherent word, just a pathetic whine that turned into a near scream when Bucky plunged three of his digits into you. The air was full of the frantic sounds of your combined breathing, along with the rapid squelch of his fingers driving in and out of your cunt with a speed you didn’t know was humanly possible. It felt like he was hitting every part of you, even parts you didn’t know existed until now. Every time with Bucky felt that way.
“How you doing, sugar?” Bucky asked as he continued to drive his fingers home. “You okay?”
You nodded and grunted in the affirmative, loving how he always checked in on you. You were so much more than okay. You were transcendent.
Soon, you felt that intense, unfamiliar build up that only he had been able to pull out of you once before, on the living room floor. The pleasure was so intense, you couldn’t see straight and you were exploding all over again, clinging to Bucky for dear life as you screamed his name.

What would fae!dick and Bruce's relationship be like? Would they fight, woild they be loyal to a fault, would they even separate? Faes do love living in one place after all
Hmmm, well if we go with the option of Dick growing up mostly in the human world being more accustomed to attaching himself to people rather than a place I’d reckon him and Bruce would end up growing quite close.
Of course, the manor becomes Dick’s permanent home and reacts to the presence of an other being rather quickly, but at the core of it? I think Dick would use Bruce and Alfred as his anchor, with Jason and Tim and all the others joining over time.
And loyalty… well, the creatures I grew up with were never divided into good or evil. They were very versatile, much like humans. One could be kind and sweet in one story only to turn monstrous in the next, usually dependent on how they’d been treated by the human of the story. Dick is kind and loyal by nature and I headcanon he only shows his more “monstrous” side when he’s truly irked or feels he’s been wronged in some way (which is… a very subjective thing for fae).
Bruce offered Dick a home and a family, both things that certain type of other creatures value very much and consider sacrosanct. It may not win him over right away, but it goes a long way in building that fundamental trust that’s gonna end with Batman and Robin roaming the streets as a team.
On Bruce’s part… most things he does that are considered “gift giving” and “offers of kinship” are accidental. Because, well, he’s not fae. And he’s new to this child-parent thing and is totally winging it but it??? Seems to work ok???? And he finds that bribing Dick with food and old trinkets makes the boy more approachable, so that’s what he keeps doing until Dick starts coming to him on his own, without additional prompting.
Bruce is super happy because he thinks he’s doing this parenting stuff right and his son ward is warming up to him.
Dick is grudgingly charmed into accepting Bruce and Alfred as “his” humans. (It’s really hard to stay cold and distant with all the good food. And Dick may be fae but he’s been around humans all his life. He gets lonely embarrassingly easy. And he thrives and hugs.)
Sheesh ok getting off topic again. To sum it all up: I think their bond would be pretty strong and not easily broken. There’s mutual trust going on, but Bruce would have to learn to make compromises with Dick very early due to his… otherness. All those strict rules wouldn’t go over well with a fae. at all. Especially not if Dick found out who got his parents killed.
Consequently I think the monumental fallout that ends with Dick moving to Blüdhaven wouldn’t happen. At least not in its original severity. Mostly because Bruce had to get accustomed to Dick having a strong mind of his own years ago, and because he found out that being “rude and downright disrespectful” is an easy way to have a murder of crows with a suspicious number of eyes and wings chase you around for weeks on end. (Not to mention the deer incident. Bruce swears deer should NOT have that many rows of teeth.)
So yeah, they still argue. They still fight. But it’s usually just small spats and gets resolved rather quickly. ✨ and now that Dick’s finally settled down? Yup. Sorry. That’s HIS stretch of land now. He’s got his magic sunk into the very roots of it. Thank you and good day. And may the gods help anyone who tries to take it OR his humans away from him. 🌳

Writeblr Questionnaire
Thanks @illarian-rambling here, @paeliae-occasionally here, @willtheweaver here, @honeybewrites here, @urnumber1star here,
And @leahnardo-da-veggie here!
About You:
When did you start writing?
Genuinely I'm not sure, but I do have physical evidence that it's been a while. The first story I wrote was called "In the Dark." I was at the age where I drew several pictures with one color of marker with stick figures and my mom wrote the words for me. I'd say preschool-aged. I think I was three.
Are the genres/themes you enjoy reading different from the ones you write?
I am a person with a huge bias toward fantasy in the things I write and consume. However, I'm not picky with genres, it just happens to be a pattern. I really do love plenty of realistic fiction books. It just so happens that I have exactly one realistic fiction story in my WIP ideas. One. And even then, it needed a gimmick to be interesting for me to write. I have no interest in writing realistic fiction other than that. But I really do love plenty of realistic fiction books!
I want to write a mystery one day, but it'll have to be a fantasy mystery. I do love plenty of realistic fiction mystery books and shows and stuff. I could never write historical fiction, although that isn't a frequented genre to begin with.
Theme-wise, I couldn't say. I don't really care.
Is there an author (or just a fellow writer!) you want to emulate, or one to whom you’re often compared?
Nope. I think people will make their own comparisons, but there's no one in particular I am trying to emulate. I'm just me.
Can you tell me a little about your writing space(s)? (Room, coffee shop, desk, etc.)
Sometimes I just write on the couch or at a random place at school, but I've been going to my desk a lot more. It's just in my room, I'm on a swivel chair, and my laptop is on top of it. Nothing special.
What’s your most effective way to muster up some muse?
Read my old writing or my notes! I see stuff I forgot about or I get ideas from the details. Occasionally I'll check out a video or something if I'm truly stuck.
Did the place(s) you grew up in influence the people and places you write about?
Uh, yes. Why do you think I set the "real world" in a middle-class intermediate school in the greater Houston area on a six-lane FM road with a Sonic, Walgreens, and apartment complex nearby? It's a lot easier to describe things that way. Everywhere else I have to make up a floor plan for interiors and use Google Maps for the surrounding scenery.
Are there any recurring themes in your writing, and if so, do they surprise you at all?
A lot of queer and neurodivergent people. No, that does not surprise me. It me. It accident.
Friends-to-lovers is my most common romantic relationship, but there's also a lot of platonic and queerplatonic relationships.
Interpersonal relationships in general are huge themes of mine and appear in almost everything I write.
Since I write YA, there's a lot of coming of age.
None surprise me.
Your Characters:
Would you please tell me about your current favorite character? (Current WIP, past WIP, never used, etc.)
Oof that's hard. For TSP... I love talking about Carmen. She's such an asshole, but she's super interesting. I want to put her under a microscope and study her. She's a character I'm constantly thinking about. I like seeing why she does the things she does. She's developed into a character I originally didn't think much about, and now I can't stop! She's also funny. She doesn't mean to be, but she's so high-strung and angry that she is fun to write for.
For SOTL, it's Tierney. I have one chapter with him, but that doesn't matter. He's amazing and I love talking about him. He's a mess. He's a nerd. He's awkward. I love him.
Which of your characters do you think you’d be friends with in real life?
Well, the characters closest to my age are Liam and George, and I think I'd be friends with them! Liam may occasionally get on my nerves in the debate side of him, but I think I'd get used to it, especially because his part of the grilled cheese debate is based on someone I actually know and am friends with.
I'm not sure about being friends with the kids, but I do hang out with plenty due to being an educator, and I remember how I was at that age. Out of everyone, Robbie and Akash feel like they'd perfectly fit into my friend group, which may be why I love writing them so much. Individually I think Gwen is the one I'd be most likely to get along with.
I haven't written enough of SOTL, but I'd get along with Jill. Also Ritchie and their group of friends.
Which of your characters would you dislike the most if you met them?
Carmen, I'm so sorry, I would not like you. Gabriel also can get rude and boring. Noelle constantly mentioning her mom would get on my nerves, if I'm being honest. I feel like I could only take Parker in small doses, even if I really like Wade.
I'm not far enough in SOTL to make a decision except for the purposefully antagonistic characters.
Tell me about the process of coming up with of one, all, or any of your characters.
Well, TSP it really depends. Here are all the characters I think are worth mentioning for the entire series.
Originally based on someone I knew before developing a completely different personality: Lexi, Maddie, Ash, Gwen, Noelle, Rose, Kelsey, Carla, George, Hye-Jin, Atsila
They started out as someone completely different in previous drafts and then in the process of developing them I got attached: Jedi, Carmen
I created them for Draft Four as a love interests and then I got attached: Robbie, Akash
I created them in Draft Four to fill up the background: Liam, Ewan, Jazlyn, Wade, Parker, Tyler, Niri, Gabriel, Sam
I needed a name for a prominent figure and then I kept using it and they became important: Raissa
I needed characters for the AU didn't I?: Alex, Issa, CJ, Wendy
Background characters I had no intention of making important: Teo, Xitlali, Anathi
For SOTL, it's simple. Get a character from a fairy tale, nursery rhyme, fable, legend, other public domain work, etc and make them my own!
Do you notice any recurring themes/traits among your characters?
Most of them are queer and neurodivergent. Most are in the 11-25 range given the demographic I write in.
How do you picture them? (As real people you imagined, as models/actors who exist in real life, as imaginary artwork, as artwork you made or commissioned, anime style, etc.)
I want TSP and SOTL to both be in hand-drawn animation, so I imagine them like that. Western animation with anime inspiration like ATLA, Teen Titans, etc is what I typically imagine it in.
Your Writing:
What’s your reason for writing?
I love it!! And also I'd go insane. It's also why I write reviews and analyses of stuff. I've stayed up until 2 am before thinking thoughts on TV shows and I legit can't sleep until I've written an essay.
Is there a specific comment or type of comment you find particularly motivating coming from your readers?
I've gotten "oh I like this little detail" or "wow good dialogue" or "realistic friendship!!" And that always makes me happy.
How do you want to be thought of by those who read your work? (For example: as a literary genius, or as a writer who “gets” the human condition; as a talented worldbuilder, as a role model, etc.)
I just want people to like my characters, is that too much to ask?
What do you feel is your greatest strength as a writer?
I really like character building and details around their lives. I think I'm good at writing consistent characters because I've put so much work behind them.
What have you been frequently told your greatest writing strength is by others?
Dialogue! So many people comment on the realism of my dialogue, and I really like that!
How do you feel about your own writing? (Answer in whatever way you interpret this question.)
If it's at 1 am I think it's awful. When I read my old writing I cringe. Sometimes if I'm in a bad mood my self esteem plummets. But overall, when I look back, I see how far I've come. When I make a revision, even a small one, I smile because I know my writing is getting better. I just get excited about improvement!
If you were the last person on earth and knew your writing would never be read by another human, would you still write?
Yes because it helps me sleep. Were you not paying attention lol
When you write, are you influenced by what others might enjoy reading, or do you write purely what you enjoy? If it’s a mix of the two, which holds the most influence?
No. I write for ME.

survival tactics - the winter soldier x reader
Tumblr media
Part Four of my Ghost Story AU - Find the Series Masterlist here.
Plot: When their worst nightmare comes true, Y/N and Bucky try to make it out alive. Pairing: The Winter Soldier/Bucky Barnes x Female!Reader Warnings: Mentions of death, dead bodies, choking, blood, violence, threats, guns, knives, and shooting. Nothing too graphic/gory, but this chapter is definitely more violent than the others, so please use your own discretion! Also mentions of the abuse, manipulation and trauma Bucky faced while under HYDRA’s control. And HYDRA agents being the creepy assholes they are. As always, if I miss any triggers, please let me know. Notes: We’ve reached part four already! Thank you again for all loving this story so much. I hope you like this chapter. Not beta’d, so any mistakes are my own.
1945
He awakens strapped to a table. He can feel things poking and prodding at him, but is too groggy to tell who or what they are. Faces stare down at him, most of them too blurry for him to recognise.
“Sergeant Barnes.” A voice says.
Who is Sergeant Barnes?
Hazy memories flash through his brain. Memories of flying.
Or was it falling?
His body throbs with a dull pain. He twitches, trying to break free, but someone or something holds him down. And somehow, he doesn’t fight it.
More memories now. Of red crimson on the snow, seeping through it. A beautiful landscape, destroyed by violence. Why so much blood?
There’s screaming. Screaming that he can’t recognise.
“He’s tense. I’m not sure if he’s stable enough for the procedure yet.”
“The procedure has already started.” The original voice corrects. Another face appears, looming out of the haze. “You are to be… the new fist of HYDRA. Our Winter Soldier.”
Tumblr media
19-seventy something.
He’s running. He doesn’t know where he’s going, or how long he’s been running for. He just needs to get away. Away from the base, from all the people touching him, of the pain. He weaves through the trees, a tactic he learnt from years of being a super-powered assassin. His legs pound the frozen ground, and his heart and lungs burn. Despite the pain, he’s never felt so alive.
Just get away. Just run.
As he breaks through the trees, he stops. He can finally see the horizon, vast and never ending. He takes a breath.
He’s alive.
He’s here.
He’s free.
But as he takes a step forward, something hits him in the leg, and he falls to the ground, landing in the snow. Russian expletives fill the air, and he hisses in pain. Yet, the adrenaline in his veins keeps him going, another burst of energy causing him to rise once more. He steps forward, still hissing in pain. He only makes it a few more steps before being hit in his other leg. He looks down at the bullet hole in his legs, at the blood flowing out of the wounds. Again, crimson seeps into the snow.
They’ve found him again.
Before he can try to get up, or even to crawl forward, two muscular arms grab him, hauling him up. He tries to struggle, but it’s futile. Despite how much he wants to deny it, his wounds have weakened him. And so, he gives up the fight.
Yet, as he’s loaded back into a van, ready to be taken back to base, one thought remains: He will get out of here. One way or another.

Present Day
Now, as he watches the HYDRA agent, Bucky knows he should’ve known you can never truly outrun your demons. Especially when they’re as all reaching as HYDRA. The man walks around the room, staring at both with a smirk. “Now, we can do this the easy way, or the hard way.”
“Y/N. Run.” Bucky hisses. He knows it’s futile, but there’s still a little hope that she’ll be able to flee there. Y/N tries to run, but he grabs her before she can escape.
“I see you’ve brought a new plaything, Soldat. How generous.” The man shoves her against the wall, and Y/N cries out in pain. The sound makes Bucky even angrier. He tries to stand up, forgetting how tightly he’s been bolted in. “She’ll do nicely. But what to do with her? We’ve been trying to replicate you, you know? Perhaps she can be your replacement.” Y/N squirms in his arms, trying to free herself. “Or maybe… I’ll keep her for myself, hm?”
“Stay away from her.” Bucky demands, his metal arm tensing, flexing against his restraints. The sound of metal grinding against metal fills the air. This whole time, he’s refused to let Y/N see his true self, the true strength and violence he’s capable of. But now, he has to use it. There’s no other choice. It’s for their survival.
So why is he so damn terrified?
“Remain in your cell until the others get here, and then there won’t be any problems.” That’s what they trained him to do. To be obedient and stay locked away for god knows how long. To be their warrior, their soldier, moulded and controlled. That was Bucky’s life for so long. When he escaped, he finally thought he had a chance for freedom, and to live a normal, happy life. To find love. To be Bucky Barnes again.
With Y/N, he found that. Someone to care for him and love him, despite everything. Someone he can laugh with. She’s his entire world, his reason for staying alive. The person he thinks of first thing in the morning and last thing at night. Losing her, losing their happiness scares him to death.
And he’s not letting HYDRA take her away from him, to destroy either of them and the new life they built together. This time, he won’t obey.
The guard looks young, nowhere near as experienced as the HYDRA agents and handlers he’s used to seeing. He’s cocky too, without the same maturity as the other agents. And that, thankfully, means that he won’t have been entrusted with the Winter Soldier’s control words. They have a chance to stop him. Just as long as he can get out of this fucking cell in time. He strains as hard as he can to break free, feeling the metal buckle under his grasp.
“I won’t let you touch him.” Y/N hisses, wriggling in his grasp and hitting the man in the head as hard as she can. “He’s not going anywhere with you.” In response, the man wraps his hands around her neck, squeezing. Y/N groans, clawing at the man’s wrists and kicking with all her might, desperate for survival. An intense rage burns within Bucky.
“Such a feisty little thing. I can see why you like her, Soldat.”
“His name….” Y/N’s voice fills the room. Soft and strained. “Is Bucky.” Despite the love he feels for her using his real name, Bucky can see Y/N getting weaker and weaker by the moment. The rage intensifies, so hot and strong it consumes his entire being.
Just one more push.
Just hold on, Y/N. I’m coming to save you, just as you’ve saved me.
“You know what’ll be fun? How about I cut your little girlfriend up… and make you watch?”
Bucky’s metal arm breaks through then, and he kicks the door hard. It bursts open within a second, and he storms out, right towards the HYDRA agent. In an instant, the hand tightly wrapped around Y/N’s neck is peeled off. She falls to the floor, taking in a deep breath of survival. “I told you to stay away from her.” Bucky hisses, his eyes darkening. “You’re not going to touch either of us again.” She’s never seen him like this before, so angry… so frightening. His entire face, once so full of laughter and smiles for her, is contorted by rage. It’s then she realises that this must be what he looked like as the Winter Soldier, and what HYDRA’s enemies saw before they took their last breath.
The agent’s tough facade soon shatters as Bucky’s grasp on his arm tightens. He cries out in pain, an agonising scream the likes of which Y/N has never heard before. And she never wants to hear it again. As the agent’s body sinks down to the floor, Bucky grabs his gun.
“See you and your friends in hell.” He hisses, before pulling the trigger.
As the man’s body slumps to the floor, Bucky crosses over to Y/N. In an instant, all the rage in his face is gone, replaced by concern as he checks over her. Already, strong, angry marks are already developing on her neck. Bucky’s jaw clenches angrily. “Scum. Bullets aren’t enough for them.”
However, all Y/N can do is stare at the body on the floor. Whether in horror or a morbid curiosity, she doesn’t know. “He’s dead.” She gasps. She and Bucky watch as a deep crimson seeps out, coating the floor. Just like it did on a cold winter’s day in 1945. “You killed him.” She whimpers. Her stomach churns, and she has to suppress the bile rising in her throat. Of course, she’s not stupid. She knows that this is what needs to be done to stop HYDRA, and they deserve far more than what Bucky gave them. But she’s never seen such a violent death before. Especially not one caused by Bucky.
She should’ve expected this, a voice in her head tells her. After all, all she’s heard since they got to this damn place is how violent Bucky is, the true extent of what he’s capable of. And she didn’t listen, instead believed that part of his life was over, that they were safe. That things were normal. How very wrong she was. But then again, as they grew closer, she never had any reason to doubt that Bucky - the man who listened intently to her family stories, whose eyes sparkle whenever they see her walking into his cell - was anything other than safe.
And then the tears come, erupting from within as the reality of everything that’s just happened sets in. Immediately, Bucky pulls her close, wrapping his arms around her in a tight squeeze. She buries her face in his chest, inhaling his scent and shielding her eyes from the agent bleeding out next to them. For a moment, Y/N realises how nice it feels to be in Bucky’s arms, and how safe she feels in his tight grasp. He whispers reassuring words in her ear, telling her it’ll be okay in the hopes it soothes her. Even though he doesn’t know if it’ll be alright either. He holds her as she cries, letting her relax and find comfort in his arms.
“Hey. Look at me.” Bucky orders, gently lifting her cheek up so she’s eye level with him. As she looks into the silvery blue eyes she knows so well, matching her breathing with his, Y/N slowly calms down. Surprisingly, Bucky’s not angry at her hysterical reaction. He’s more sorrowful, upset that she had to see something like that, and concerned for her wellbeing. “I’m sorry you had to see that. But I couldn’t let him hurt my girl.” The words slip out with no thought, and Y/N gasps.
“I’m your girl?” Of course, after being tortured and manipulated for so long, Bucky’s never really thought about his love life, and who he cares for enough to consider his girl. But Y/N has done so much for him, and he loves her so deeply that he knows with no doubt that, yes, she is his girl.
“Of course you are.” He gives her another squeeze, and she manages a small smile. Her eyes flicker down to his lips.
If this was a rom-com, or at least, if they weren’t being hunted by HYDRA agents and didn’t have a dead body bleeding out beside them, this is the part where they would kiss and go in the sunset together to live happily ever after. And that’s what Y/N wants. But life isn’t all sunshine and rainbows, especially not theirs. “Y/N.” Bucky whispers. “We have to go find the others. It’s not safe here.” Y/N nods, letting Bucky help her up and lead her towards the cell’s exit.
“How are you feeling, by the way?” She asks. Her voice is unsure, almost as if she thinks asking someone how they’re feeling when their abusers find them again is a stupid question. Bucky doesn’t think it’s a stupid question though. In fact, Y/N caring about him so much, and making sure that she’s alright even after what she’s been through is making him fall even deeper in love with her.
Honestly, he’s fucking terrified. For a moment, he thought he was finally safe from HYDRA. He feels like a complete idiot for even thinking they wouldn’t find him again. And even though he’ll fight tooth and nail to protect Y/N, to protect both of them, he’s terrified that they’re going to find them both, and then he’ll be taken back to the hell they kept him in for so long. But he’s refusing to show it and worry her even more. He has to stay strong, for both their sakes. He has to do what’s necessary to protect them both. He’ll have to deal with his feelings later, when this is all over, like he has done ever since he escaped their grasp. If they ever make it out of here, that is.
As they step out into the hallway, the hair on the back of Bucky’s neck stands up. It’s so… quiet. Too quiet. What was once a bustling hallway, full of guards, is now empty.
“How the hell do we get out of this place?”
“I know. Come on.” Y/N beckons. Yet when they try to open the door, it’s locked, and Y/N’s attempts to unlock it don’t work. “They must be on lockdown. We’re stuck here.” Bucky can already sense the panic in her voice, and he squeezes her hand reassuringly.
“No, we’re not stuck here. We’ll find a way out. I promise.”
Tumblr media
“What the hell is going on?!” Steve demands, bursting into the room. Maria and Nick glance up at them both, brows furrowed.
“Hello to you too, Rogers, Wilson.” Fury sighs. “It seems we’re under attack. We don’t know who from, or why, but-”
“It’s HYDRA.”
“We don’t know that, it’s-”
“It has to be! Bucky escaped and he and Y/N were terrified of him being found and brought back there. And we just sat around like sitting ducks.” He sighs, massaging his temples. “We should never have come here.”
“Rogers. This entire compound is under lockdown. Nobody gets in or out. We have agents already beginning to search the building. We'll find them.” Fury insists, but Steve and Sam aren’t convinced.
“They could be anywhere in this damn building, alone and vulnerable. And we’re not going to let them be taken.”
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Y/N and Bucky try to find their way out of the maze that is the compound. Y/N swears that they’ve gone down the same hallway at least five times, but she’s too nervous to even say anything. They’ve only encountered a few HYDRA agents on their way, but Bucky dispatched them all with ease.
“I don’t like this,” she murmurs. “You’d think they would have sent more agents to take you back.”
“I know.” Bucky sighs. “They must be planning something. And that’s why we have to keep moving.” The further into the compound they go, the more nervous Y/N becomes. Her heart hasn’t stopped pounding from the moment the ‘guard’ entered the cell. All she wants to do is lie down and never get back up again. But she has to keep going and be strong. For both of them.
She registers Bucky squeezing her hand again, and it’s only then she realises that they’re still hand in hand. Of course, they have brushed their hands together before, but this is different. This is special, more intimate. “My girl.” Echoes in her mind, and something in her stomach flutters once more. In an ideal world, this is when she’d tell him the truth. That she thinks she’s falling in love with him. Of course, in an ideal world, they wouldn’t have been attacked by HYDRA either, but even then… Y/N’s not sure if she would’ve told him the truth. He’s been through so much already, even before all this. He doesn’t even know what his life is now that he’s escaped HYDRA, or what’s going to happen to him. Her admitting her feelings would destroy any progress he’s made, and force him to make a choice he may not even be ready for. That’s the last thing he needs.
“You okay? All things considered, that is.”
“Yeah.” She lies. “I just never realised how big this place is.”
As the pair keep walking, the hallway soon splits in to two. “So. Which way?”
“I don’t know.” Bucky steps forward, looking around cautiously.
“Stay here. I’ll go check it out.”
“No! You can’t go. Not alone, not when they’re looking for you!” She insists. Bucky places a reassuring hand on her forearm.
“I’ll be okay. If need be, I’ll end this on my own. I’ll be back soon. I promise.” And with one last reassuring squeeze, he’s gone.
Tumblr media
She doesn’t know how long it’s been since Bucky left. She tried counting the minutes, but gave up after she reached ten. Nervously, she wrings her hands, trying to think of something that won’t make her panic. Bucky’s smart, he’s calculated. They trained him for moments like this. She knows that first hand. Would all his training really be enough to fight off however many HYDRA agents are swarming this place? But she can only think of one thing:
“Why did I let him go on his own?”
Suddenly, she hears footsteps. Relief floods her veins, and she sighs. It’s Bucky. He’s back, and he’s safe.
“Checking the east perimeter now.” With those words, everything falls apart. That voice definitely isn’t Bucky, and it’s not Steve or Sam either. And Y/N definitely isn’t about to stick around and find out whose it is. She opens a door, diving into the room and closing the door behind her.
The footsteps get louder and louder, and Y/N dives for cover under a table. She attempts to quieten her breathing, even wondering if HYDRA trains their agents to smell fear, or to notice the sound of panicked breathing or a raised heart rate. When the door opens, Y/N bites her tongue hard, trying to stop the frightened whimper that threatens to erupt. Where the hell is Bucky?
“Is somebody in here?”
Stay quiet.
Stay alive.
As the figure roams the room, Y/N huddles into herself, hoping it makes her invisible. Just like her grandma told her to do when she was too afraid of the monsters under her bed to sleep. “Wrap yourself up, nice and tight… and then the monsters can’t give you a fright.” Her words ring out, clear as day in Y/N’s mind. If only she could’ve known back then just how real the ghosts and monsters that she used to be so terrified of are. But this time, the monsters are so much more evil.
And then, silence falls. For a moment, Y/N is relieved, hoping it means that the man has finally left and she can continue her search for Bucky. That is, however, until a voice sounds.
“Well, what do we have here?” She’s pulled harshly up then, the tight grasp on her arm making her yelp out in pain. A flash of silver glints in the light, almost at her throat. A knife. In an instant, she’s transported back to her grandmother’s living room, when she first saw Bucky. When she knew that to ensure her survival and avoid being on the other end of those knives, she had to say the right things.
And now, she has to do it all over again.
Bucky though, he was different. He was kind enough to let her go… albeit in his own way. She doesn’t have that advantage here. But she’ll be damned if she’s not going to try.
“Oh.” The man chuckles, closing the gap between them both. “I know who you are. We know all about you. You’re the Winter Soldier’s friend, aren’t you?” She stays silent, a million different exit plans swirling throughout her brain. “Now come on. Where is he?”
“I don’t know.” She finally speaks. It’s not a lie. She hasn’t seen him in god knows how long. Yet the man remains unconvinced. So he asks again. And again, Y/N repeats her answer.
“Come on. You really expect me to believe that?!” He hisses after still not getting his desired response. Before she can even attempt to convince him of the truth, he grins, one that sends a chill throughout her body. “Fine.” He pulls out the knife, bringing it closer to her. The cool metal runs along her skin, her nerves intensifying. He has her life in her hands. One wrong move, and she’s gone. But even then, she still wouldn’t give Bucky up. “If you won’t tell me… I’ll just have to make you.”
Quickly, Y/N shoves him. It’s not hard enough to do much damage, but it’s still enough to knock the man back slightly. She makes a break for the door, but he’s quicker than her. He grabs her, slamming her against the wall and leaving her dazed for a moment. “You can stop this, you know. Save yourself. Just tell me the truth.” She pants, glaring at him.
“Did you not listen the first few times you asked me? I don’t know where he is. In fact, if he had any sense, he’d be gone, miles away from the risk of being taken again.” It hurts to say that, to think that Bucky would just throw her to the wolves like that, especially after everything they’ve shared. But honestly, she wouldn’t blame him if he ran. Above all else, Y/N wants Bucky to be safe. And she’d sacrifice herself to make sure of it.
“You can’t stop us. We’ll find him.”
“Not if I can help it. I won’t let you destroy him again.” She hisses.
“You have a lot of fight in you, but we’ll break you eventually. We always do.” He insists. “You’ll be so broken you won’t even remember your name, let alone any of the times you spent with your friends or your family. Just like we did to him.” He’s just trying to scare her into a confession. She knows that. But fear is not the primary emotion she feels in that moment. In fact, she’s full of rage. The way he speaks about Bucky, laughing like the things they did to him and the way they destroyed his life means nothing, disgusts her. As if his trauma, and the things they made him do are just jokes to them. He’s just collateral damage, a pawn in their larger plan.
When she said Bucky would burn the world down to protect her, she didn’t realise that she’d do the exact same for him.
“Go to hell.” She spits in his face. He looks at her curiously for a moment, almost as if he’s impressed by her refusal to back down, and her attempts to fight back. But then, he smirks.
“You really shouldn’t have done that.” In an instant, the knife is back at her throat, almost cutting into her skin. “You’re in for a world of hurt, sweetheart. You really want to test me?” He smirks. The way he stares at her, leering at her as he calls her sweetheart, is enough to churn her stomach. “Do you know what they tell us in HYDRA?” He chuckles. “They say the easiest way to infiltrate someone is through their heart.” He moves the knife lower, pointing it at her chest. Y/N’s heart pounds, so loud she swears it could be heard in the room. “Because once you threaten the people they love… getting them to do what you want becomes so much easier.” He stares at her again, smirking. “So how much does the Winter Soldier care about you, hm? Do you think he cares enough to come running when I hurt you?” Y/N’s blood chills, yet she still scoffs, hoping he can’t see how much his words are affecting her.
“She’s treated me with nothing but kindness since she found me here.” Bucky’s voice echoes in her mind. She can still picture his eyes, and the way they sparkle. How brightly he smiles whenever he sees her. How he broke out of his fucking cell to save her. The way he abandoned his fucking training and didn’t kill her. He does care about her, he does.
“Do it then. Strike through the heart. But you know what’s going to happen if you do kill me? The Winter Soldier is going to come after HYDRA. And he’ll come for you first.” She promises, hoping that the mere threat of a vengeful Bucky is enough to frighten the man. “And you know exactly what he’s capable of. How he can rip apart entire armies like they’re sheets of paper. Can you imagine what he’d do to you? Do you really want that?” The man pauses, and Y/N takes advantage of this to kick him hard in his shin.
He grunts in pain, lunging for her, but she brings her arm up, striking him with her elbow. She has no idea which part of his face it connects with, but from the scream of pain that fills the air, she knows it must have hurt. Y/N makes another break for the door, but he grabs her hair, pulling her back. She cries out, a furious call of: “Let. Me. Go!” The mixture of fear, rage and pure adrenaline burns within her, a Molotov cocktail of sorts. With one final push, Y/N shoves the man as hard as she can. He stumbles backwards, falling in slow motion. He hits his head on the side corner of the same table she was hiding under and hits the floor with a thud.
And then the room falls silent once more. Y/N steps forward, warily. Despite how close she gets, the man still doesn’t move. Once she’s sure he’s quiet, she lets out an almighty sigh of relief. Grabbing the knife, she finally leaves the room. However, as she steps outside, the adrenaline wears off, and the reality of the situation hits. For a moment, her legs almost go, and she narrowly avoids collapsing in a heap on the floor. Her heart pounds, her head throbs and she just wants to go to sleep.
But she has to keep moving, no matter what. Bucky would want her to. So, she takes a few more steps forward, until:
“Y/N? Y/N is that you?” A voice calls. And thankfully, this time it’s a voice she knows.
“Sam? Sam!” she calls, running into his arms. “I’ve never been so glad to see you.” She whimpers, almost breaking down in tears right there and then.
“Likewise.” He chuckles, giving her a squeeze. Almost as if he’s checking she’s real. Suddenly, he takes her in, and his eyes widen. “Are you okay?”
She glances down, noticing the blood on her clothes. Oh god. He must have nicked her with the knife. The knife that’s still in her hand. It slips out of her grasp, clattering against the floor.
“S-Someone found me. Someone from HYDRA. He tried to take me too, b-but I pushed him and he fell. He hit his head. I don’t know if he’s dead or- “
“Hey, it’s alright. You did good. You stopped him.” He soothes, letting her calm down. And for the most part, it works. Until he asks: “Where’s Bucky?”
“I don’t know.” She sniffles. “He went to scope for more agents, but he hasn’t come back.”
“Hey, hey. It’s okay.” Sam soothes. “Steve and agents are out looking, too. I’m sure they’ll find him.” She nods, hoping to god that he’s right. “Come on. We should head back upstairs. At least the two of us are better than one.” She nods, and Sam leads her throughout the building. Even though she should feel reassured by Sam’s presence, and she appreciates his support, she feels anything but reassured. It’s still so quiet. Too quiet.
After walking for a while, they round the corner, almost colliding with a figure. Immediately, they prepare themselves for another fight… until the figure holds up their hands in surrender.
“It’s okay! It’s just me.” Steve gasps. For a moment, she’s relieved. Until she realises that he’s alone. Her heart sinks. Bucky’s still lost, god knows where in this fucking building. But who’s to say he’s even still in this place, that he hasn’t been dragged back by HYDRA?
“We still have more places to check. It’s alright, we’ll find him.” Steve reassures, almost as if he read her mind. And all she can do is hope that he’s right.
The trio keeps moving, keeping a watchful eye out for Bucky. Suddenly, a door bursts open at the end of the hallway, banging against the wall, the sound reverberating through the air. Reflexively, Y/N jumps. A figure stalks into view. One the trio knows all too well.
“Bucky. Thank god.” She breathes a sigh of relief. Bucky just stands there, watching the three of them. When she attempts to step closer, Steve and Sam stop her. “Guys, what’s-”
But then, he speaks.
“Who the hell is Bucky?”

From Vicki Gabereau Show, 23 October 1997
Vicki Gabereau Show (Canada), 23 October 1997 - This show is a Canadian talk-show. DD talked about the brouhaha over his wanting to leave Vancouver
I'm from Vancouver and I remember this story well! The problem wasn't just that he wanted to leave Vancouver, it was that everyone thought he was a super liar and a coward for blaming his wife who was in Los Angeles, as if there were no airplanes at the time and as if she was starring in Friends… the show she was on - a piece of crap that was nowhere near the success of The X-Files - had even been canceled. She was occasionally seen in Vancouver and everyone thought she was very nice and beautiful. People said that the real reason he left Vancouver was because he wanted to be - and rightly so - in Hollywood, close to better opportunities for his career, especially in the movies, as television at the time wasn't as powerful as it is today and science fiction was even more marginalized. Today Duchovny must find it hilarious how he, a literature graduate, could shoot himself in the foot in his interviews by wanting to make up stories instead of being honest.
I don't think he was being dishonest. From his perspective, that was what got him in trouble.
David had already talked about-- though he didn't understand-- the "arrogant actor who always got his way" angle that spawned itself at the time; but that was an abiding media narrative before the Vancouver weather comment. The latter exploded him into the stratosphere of picked-over conversation, to such extremes that CC had to come out and make a clearing-the-air statement--
In an interview by phone from Los Angeles Sunday, Carter admitted that he had promised Duchovny and Anderson that the show would not stay in Vancouver indefinitely.
Duchovny told several U.S. talk-show hosts late last year that he would sooner quit The X-Files than spend another year away from his wife, Naked Truth actress Tea Leoni, but Carter denied the actor had forced his hand.
“It’s important to remember that we originally intended to film the pilot [in March 1993] in Los Angeles,” Carter said. “When we couldn’t find a good forest, we made a quick decision to come to Vancouver. As it turned out, it was three weeks that turned into five years. The benefits of being in Vancouver were tremendous, and now, five years later, it is my home away from home.”
--multiple times.
As I was reading "older" interviews, I found Gillian and Frank Spotnitz and Chris Carter and the other writers and actors on The X-Files, too, thought the anger directed at David was because of his weather jokes. They truly all believed this perspective; and figured it took off because Vancouver jumped from offense at his comments to miffed blame for the show's relocation.
They've stated this many times; and I can't disagree, to be honest: David was upfront and honest (sometimes too much so) in the five years leading up to his weather comment-- he was moving after his contractually obligated time or quitting the show-- before Tea became involved. (It was Chris, in fact, who dragged his feet and tried to dissuade him and Gillian from moving. And, when the show relocated, it was CC who mourned the move.)
Gillian also stated to the press, multiple times, that she was happy to leave Vancouver-- that California was home, that she was lonely, that she was going through hard times, etc.-- but no one was listening to her. It wasn't until I deep-dove into old articles that I realized how happy she was to leave; and that she insisted on relocating just as much as David did. (Wikipedia still, to this day, backhandedly cites the move as David's fault for wanting to be in Cali with Tea; but neither DD nor GA nor CC nor their contracts support this narrative.)
Further, I've read old Vancouver articles: they, too, fussed at him about the weather, sometimes with the criticism about him (quote-on-quote) leaving the show for his wife, and sometimes without. The weather really did predominant the talking points, no matter how people took it or what angle it was reported on.
If you were already known as the "arrogant" guy on The X-Files set-- which is especially delicious to a press that likes to paint cliche narratives instead of the full, funky truth-- being blamed for something changing on the show wouldn't be new. The fervor over weather was what threw David and his X-Files cohorts for a loop.
Those are my thoughts, anyway~

What are your top five dragons?
I've thought long and hard about this, and I've come up with a list that I think is pretty good.
Spoilers for, honestly, like, a couple things below the cut. I've tagged the post accordingly.
5. Raijin, my Dragonite from Pokemon Violet
Tumblr media
(Obviously this isn't specifically a picture of Raijin, my Switch is sadly batterydead at the moment, but this is about what she looks like in my head. Anyway!)
Somehow or another, Dragonite ended up being the very last Gen I Pokemon I'd never caught or trained in any way. I'd caught all of the others in SOME playthrough of SOME pokemon game over the years, even the ones people generally don't love or tend to forget about. (I will be a Lickitung apologist until the day I die.) I'm not sure why I avoided the Dratini line for so long. Some general subconscious backlash? I can't really say for sure. Anyway, I caught Raijin off the coast of Paldea in Violet and she quickly became essentially the ace of my team. As it turns out, Rain Dance + Thunder with an Electric terra type is a pretty good combination.
4. Black Hole Dragons, from a Dungeons & Dragons homebrew sourcebook
I looked and looked and to my IMMENSE frustration, could not find a copy of the old-school D&D homebrew sourcebook that these things are from, but please trust me and hear me out here.
Black hole dragons as depicted in this book, a truly ridiculous bestiary of appropriate foes for Epic-level adventurers, were bizarre snaking collages of geometry that could grow to be larger than the size of the visible universe and erase people from existence by breathing on them. After encountering these when reading these sourcebooks at the impressionable age of uh....like, 23, vanilla D&D's usual array of chromatics and metallics don't do a ton for me anymore.
3. Nicol Bolas, from Magic: The Gathering
Tumblr media
This guy.
This fucking guy. This is how you do an impossibly powerful doomsday villain right.
Nicol Bolas is a dragon who's also a dimension-hopping wizard. As part of what is by my estimation one of Magic's last good sets, he also kills a bunch of faux-Egyptian deities and takes their place as the divine ruler of an entire dimension. This guy fucking rules and every single card that's ever had his name on it is awesome and if you disagree, well, that's good for you, because WoTC killed him right around the time they decided to make Magic boring forever.
2. Falin Touden, from Dungeon Meshi
Tumblr media
No, she counts. Get back here.
If I stopped to count all of the ways I thought Falin was an amazing character we'd be here all day, but very briefly I find her arc and her interesting liminal role in Dungeon Meshi's narrative super compelling, and I find her characterization very, very relatable, and not entirely in a way that reflects well on me.
But as a *dragon.*
As a DRAGON
Falin is still one of the best to ever do it. The original Red Dragon is a very cool and pivotal part of Dungeon Meshi, and I love that too, but when Falin is fused with it by Thistle we get what is just honestly one of the most memorably bitchin character designs of all time, a ludicrously hot capital MG Monster Girl, and a huge driving force for the rest of the story. Not to mention Ryoko Kui clearly put a ton of thought into how she would work, since a key flaw in her design (so to speak) is what eventually leads to her being saved. I love her to pieces, and the form Falin finally gets at the very end of the story is honestly super cool-looking too! Although it's less dragonny than this one.
The Dragon, from "Dragon"
headspace-hotel's "Dragon" is one of my favorite poems of all time. It's easily the best tumblr post, and while I don't read a ton anymore, it's definitely one of my favorite overall pieces of literature.
I realize that being so brief in the top entry makes this a little anticlimactic, but I can't bring myself to rob the poem of its impact. I linked it there, so please go read it. More than anything else on this list, it's made me think. Beyond simply thinking it's an absolutely great piece of work (which it is), it's very meaningful to me. A reminder that the danger is still present in our time.
Some honorable mentions: the rest of the Dungeon Meshi dragons, every dragon from the Souls series and from Elden Ring, Paarthurnax from Skyrim, the Blue-Eyes White Dragon, Godzilla, Beast Machines Megatron, and Odious, the Green Dragon who turns into a giant d20 that I bought from Hasbro Pulse a year or so ago.

I’m feeling cute today, so why not silly ideas?
I’ve been thinking about Project Sekai x TPC for a long time, and now I finally have time to write something about it!!1!!1 If you don’t know, Project Sekai is a popular Japanese idol rhythm game that has both original characters and Vocaloids like Miku, Rin, Len, Kaito, Meiko, it has stories and a lot of songs both Jpop and Vocaloid and it’s fun and cute characters and please play it!!!/j
This will take place in an universe when there’s no corruptions and everyone is friends! I’ll update this in reblogs if I can!
Small warning: OOC, colorful Japanese teenagers, funky robots.
——————————————————————
Today is truly a beautiful day. The warm, gentle sunlight from the sun shines down on the beautiful land, the birds are chirping a melody to welcome the new day, and the residents are busy with their work, everyone is in a relaxed and cheerful mood. A peaceful, cozy scene of a Saturday in Paradise.
Cube woke up around noon, the sun was nearly at its peak. He tiredly looked around the room, his body still regaining energy to sit up. His adopted younger brother - Cyan - had gone out to play with his friends a long time ago, the boy must have already had breakfast with the dishes he prepared the night before. That's good, because today he had slept until 10:47 AM, the boy would definitely pull him up if he didn't see any food.
He sluggishly got out of bed, dragged himself out of the room, took care of his personal hygiene, made a cup of black coffee, and greeted the new day. Just as he sat down, his precious younger brother ran back, holding something that looked like a game console, followed by three familiar kids - Orange, Tsavorite, and Gold. The four of them ran towards Cube, and Cyan excitedly said:
“ Cube, Cube, look what I have! “
As he spoke, the boy showed the game console. On the screen was a bright, vibrant color with lively music playing, startling Cube awake. He rubbed his eyes for a moment before recognizing a game he had never seen before. The game was on the waiting screen, featuring six teenagers, 5 girls and 1 boy, dressed in colorful outfits and striking poses like idols, below was a line of text that seemed to be the game's name, but before he could read it, Cyan interrupted:
“Do you think it's pretty? Orange and Tsavorite introduced it to me! This is so much fun, but what is it called again, Pro-pr..”
“It’s Project Sekai,” Orange interjected, looking somewhat displeased.
“I know, it’s just hard to read!” Cyan pouted, making a sulky face.
Orange didn’t pay attention, moving closer to Cyan and speaking to Cube:
“ We downloaded this game last month, it’s a rhythm game, with lots of songs, and there are characters too. But there are so many buttons, we don’t know how to play it. “
Tsavorite jumped in from behind:
“ Gold plays this game super well! But he won’t teach us anything, he’s so mean! “
“ It’s just that you guys play so badly, it’s not the game’s fault. “ Gold replied in a cold tone, but with a hint of sarcasm.
“ See!? He’s so annoying! “
Cube watched the kids bickering over a game, unable to help but sigh:
“ Come on, kids, it’s just a video game, there’s no need to argue..”
Orange looked up at Cube:
“ Gold won’t teach us how to play, that’s why we’re asking you. Cyan said you’re really good at music, so can you teach us? “
Tsavorite chimed in, rushing to Cube:
“ Please, I really want to play!! “
Cyan added:
“ Please, Cube, we promise we’ll be good, we promise! “
Cube didn’t know what to say, the kids looked at him with hopeful eyes that made it hard for him to refuse. After thinking for a while, since he didn’t have any plans today, spending some time with the kids wouldn’t hurt.
“ Alright, I agree, but it has to be after lunch. Also, I need to see how it works before I can teach you guys…”
The three kids cheered in unison as if they had struck gold, running to hug Cube, surprising him and making him laugh out loud:
“ Okay, kids, you don’t have to do that, let go of me now…”
“ You’re the best, not like that yellow guy. This time I’ll beat him for sure! “ Tsavorite said, his voice clearly excited.
Gold heard this, scoffing at the other three:
“ Let’s see how you’ll beat me, you can’t even get through easy mode. “
“ Hmph, with Cube here, I’ll even play hard mode to show you! “
Cube looked at the adorable kids, feeling a warm sensation in his heart. All his fatigue melted away when he saw their smiles, especially when he realized that just a game could bring them so much joy, which made him extremely happy.
“ It’s already noon. Orange, Tsavorite, Gold, you guys should go back home now, the others must be waiting. “
“ Yes, we’ll go now, Cyan, see you this afternoon.”
“ Goodbye, you guys! “
With just the two brothers left, Cyan turned back to look at Cube and hugged him tightly again.
“ Thank you so much! That game is super fun, I’m sure you’ll love it! “
“ Alright, alright, as long as you’re happy. Now, do you want to make lunch with me? “
“ Yes!! “

Official cast interviews for Blue Beetle (2023) from DC Nation
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Found these interviews in the back of Ravager: Knight Terrors and Robin: Knight Terrors. They seem to be inserted in Aug publications at random? If anyone finds Bruna Marquezine's interview please drop them and @ me
Update: The above interviews are now transcribed below:
Interview with Xolo Maridueña:
What can you share about the origin story of Jaime Reyes—and his alter ego, Blue Beetle?
Jaime is someone who's coming back to his hometown from college. One day he comes across this scarab that grants him powers beyond belief. At first, he's reluctant to become a hero, but ultimately he'll decide to accept his fate—whether he feels worthy or not!
Like most comic book films, there are tons of origin stories to pull from. I think our movie amalgamates some of Jaime's best stories in comics over the years.
How does this scarab give Jaime his powers?
The scarab, Khaji Da, is a sentient alien life-form on a mission across the universe to detect technological advancements. The scarab just so happens to attach itself to Jaime and he's granted incredible powers.
The powers are more a question of what can't he do? He can fly, punch things super hard, make his hands turn into different weapons. He's kind of just the best superhero out there...if I do say so myself.
Who is the villain of the movie, Victoria Kord?
Victoria Kord is played by Susan Sarandon in the film. Victoria is truly a billionaire mogul with her eyes on the prize. However, she has a bit of a chip on her shoulder because there was a disagreement on who should head up Kord Industries. Susan Sarandon is such an amazing actress and as much as Victoria Kord has a bad side, she's also very charming.
What makes this superhero film unique?
This film really is gonna tap into that familiar family feeling that is irreplaceable. You're gonna meet Jaime's family and say, maybe I don't look like them, maybe our parents don't come from the same place, but I know this type of love and what this relationship feels like. I hope it will make a lot of people realize you don't have to do everything alone.
All the moments that led up to Jaime encountering the scarab were because of the foundation that his family was able to build on.
Interview with George Lopez:
What can you tell us about Rudy, your character in the film?
On my last trip to Atlanta, I was in a car and I looked out the window and there was a guy working for the city with about a 10-inch goatee, glasses, long hair, and a city orange vest that had no sleeves, and I thought, man, that's me. I like the idea that we're so quick to judge somebody by the way they look, and Rudy is a bit of a contradiction from the way that he looks.
Why do you think the scarab chose Jaime Reyes as its host?
I think it chose Jaime because it knew that he's a good guy. The scarab chose somebody who would use their powers for good. If you go back into the bug lair and you see Ted Kord's previous Blue Beetle uniforms it was from a guy that had money, was a little bit eccentric, and would create these outfits for himself...but he couldn't fly anywhere.
What can fans expect from Blue Beetle's costume?
You've seen nothing until you've seen the Blue Beetle costume deploy and the pincers retract! It's amazing to see him fly and fight. He operates in a dark blue and black costume, similar to charcoal, which may be the coolest colors of all time. It feels more like a skin than an actual costume. I've seen a lot of bugs in my day, but I've never seen one that looks like that.
How is being a part of Blue Beetle meaningful to you?
As an actor, I've been fortunate enough to have done stand-up for a long time, had my own show named after me, and a number of other incredible things in my career. However, I would have hated to not be involved in this project. If I wasn't cast in this movie it would've been heartbreaking in a sense, but I'm honored to be a part of it. To know that you're specifically chosen to be in this great project, and give life to a guy like Rudy, is beyond an honor.

let's talk abt video games - dark souls
(aka snack's messy thoughts abt Dark Souls: on persistence, purpose, and perpetuality)
happy easter! today is a day where a dude flipped tables, came back to life, and was suddenly missing in a cave, so naturally we're thinking about the cyclical nature of death and rebirth and pain and suffering and absolution
- spoilers for dark souls, bloodborne, and dark souls 3 -
dark souls, along with its predecessor, demon's souls, the dark souls of dark souls games, is notorious for making you die over and over again with its punishing core loop, where if you die, you are sent back to your last checkpoint, and you need to make all the way back to where you were again… which actually sounds like any video game that came out in the 90s
but really, what makes the Dark Souls series so different from any other video game? it's nowhere near as hard or brutal as the original super mario bros, and it shares a lot of combat DNA with its ancestor game, Monster Hunter, with extremely tight animation control, even more so by Bloodborne where the focus shifts from the original Dark Souls' less linear map design and moves towards boss and enemy mechanics.
I think the key difference lies in is its commitment to their core themes in all of its aspects, ranging from design to narrative, etc.
Tumblr media
The first Dark Souls game flips what we usually see of medieval fantasy end-of-the-world stories from “everybody is dead” to “btw nobody can die anymore?” anyone that can't die no matter what eventually loses their mind because life is meaningless and existence is suffering and pain is eternal. given infinite chances and immortality, and faced with the sheer dauntingness/impossibleness of a task, people break and give up and become Hollow, essentially mindless zombies. i really like the idea that “zombies” in dark souls happen because your sanity the first to go, eroded over an infinite amount of time.
The only thing that makes you different from all of the random schmuck hollows you fight is that, lost as you are, even if you don’t know the plot or what the heck is going on, you move forward because you, the player, know there is an end. Whether in the narrative sense of “yes i will link the flame and end undying apathy and insanity” or in the “there’s gonna be a final boss eventually and i will kick his butt” mechanics sense.
This is reflected heavily in its core loop. You will die. You will come back. You will learn the enemies, you will try different things. But the most important thing is that you will push forward even if you’re a wrinkly ugly zombie. “Don’t go hollow” is a recurring theme in the game. Because the only way a player will truly go hollow is if they’ve given up on the game and lost their resolve.
Tumblr media
The sidequests of many characters revolve around this same optimism in the face of adversity, that only holding on to our humanity keeps us sane and gives us the resolve to keep going. Solaire, Siegmeyer, and many of the characters in the game believe in a better world no matter how meaningless it seems. Even Patches finds the fun in being a dick. And that sometimes we just need a little bit of joly cooperation!
Dark Souls talks about that persistence for a goal in the face of an unending task. Similarly, in its sequel, Bloodborne, Hunters must perpetually hunt the beasts that plague Yharnam. When they die, they simply wake up to return to the hunt, as if in an unending dream. Hunters are born with that purpose, and you, the player, must commit to that purpose. Fear the old blood.
Bloodborne adds to the themes of the DS1’s original argument: That goal must be yours and yours alone. Your purpose is the reason why you keep going and must come from you. Unlike when someone in DS1 becomes Hollow when they go insane, in Bloodborne, it’s the opposite. Hunters go insane when they are consumed by bloodlust and ambition, blindly slaughtering the beasts of the night or becoming monsters themselves by consuming their blood.
Tumblr media
(this is my only photo of my bloodborne playthrough as innsmouth skadi arknights)
And the game doesn’t just tell you this, it lets you experience this (and question your own sanity) through gaining powerful insight as you progress. This is where Bloodborne’s linearity and railroadedness actually aids its storytelling in contrast with Dark Souls’s openness! I won’t get too into it here, but I think anyone that’s played Bloodborne knows what mechanic I’m talking about HAHA.
The other Hunters you see in the game are generally already driven insane and will try to kill you on sight. Some retain their human form, and some have become monsters. You even get to see one other “good” NPC in the game succumb, as he beats down a “monster” into nothing but a pile of blood and mush. Before he dies.
In contrast, a (retired) Hunter named Djura will shoot you on sight, not because he’s insane, but because he found new purpose in protecting the people of Old Yharnam, who are pretty much zombies and beasts at this point. He refuses to let them die or give up on them so long as there’s a chance that they might have retained their humanity or may regain it. Another hunter, Eileen the Crow, is a Hunter of Hunters, who kills those who have gone mad.
I think my favorite example of this theme in action is through the character of Ludwig. A lot of the item descriptions in the game talk about Ludwig, one of the Healing Church’s greatest hunters and its leader. He’s described as a truly good hunter who simply wanted to stop the spread of evil using holy weapons and Being Good.
When we get to the Old Hunters DLC, we finally see Ludwig himself. Like many hunters, he was pushed beyond the brink and all we see left of him is a horselike beast. But fascinates me most about his boss battle, is that in the middle, he remembers his true purpose, not the one given to him by the Church, not the violence and blooodlust and rage stemming from his underlings that fell to beastlike tendencies, but his true mentor, his guiding moonlight that allowed him to retain his humanity: Hope and goodness, never falling to the temptation of bloodlust and insanity. It is then that Ludwig gets up from his monstrous self and fights like a human one last time, wielding his old greatsword.
Bloodborne is filled with many brilliant, subtle storytelling bits about the same persistence in Dark Souls but argues the necessity of finding our own meaning in our struggle. These themes/stories-in-mechanics work in Bloodborne because you already know what you are from the start. You’re given the purpose of eradicating monsters. You want to end the night. You will gain powerful insight. You will have eyes on the inside. Killing is extremely visceral and satisfying. Violence is the best way to stay alive in a battle. A hunter must hunt, and by progressing you are fulfilling this purpose. And by fulfilling this given purpose, we are driven mad.
Dark Souls 3 takes those themes of purpose and brings us to all the places we went through in DS1, both literally and figuratively, changed through the incomprehensible flow of time. Every location you’ve seen in the first game is now a completely different place. Or not. Same same, but different. We have to link the first flame again, and end the cycle of people not dying and going insane (again). And this works to its advantage!
Tumblr media
DS3 tackles the (even more meta) cyclical nature of this persistence and purpose. Not in the cycles of “we die, we respawn, we persist”, but the very idea that this will happen again, even if it’s not within our lifetime. The idea of revisiting DS1 fits exactly with what it’s trying to say.
One of my favorite things in DS3 is that most, if not all, the questlines end with the death and absolution of its related character, breaking their own cycles having found their purpose. It’s a marriage and contrast with the main themes of DS1 and BB, where they “live” in their final moments, ultimately choosing the way they die.
This all comes together in the game’s final boss and endings. In DS3’s last battle, you face the literal personification of everyone has that finished Dark Souls before. Everyone who, in the past, has linked the first flame. Everyone whose struggle we know and have experienced. When you defeat them, you can continue the cycle and maintain the status quo. Or, you can attempt to break the cycle with the Firekeeper, and change the world! Or you can take the first flame for yourself.
Tumblr media
DS1, BB, and DS3 all build on their predecessor’s themes to reflect on maintaining our purpose in the midst of never ending and changing hardship. But despite their glum, dreary worlds, there is always hope. And people will always fight. Because our humanity and persistence will always be our greatest weapons against struggle, no matter where, when, or how it manifests.
---
note: i dont include ds2 bec i think its direction is so different it doesn’t really fit with what these games try to discuss. the overarching design is more of cheap “difficulty” jabs than the level and narrative design we get from the miyazaki-directed games. kinda like if you draw a line in both game design and themes from ds1 to ds3, bb fits more than ds2 does

HII I LOVE YOUR FIC SO MUCH!! IT MEANS THE WORLD TO ME!! SERIOUSLY THE BEST THING I'VE READ THIS WHOLE YEAR!!
this might have already been answered but I'd like to ask what was your inspiration for writing a tmnt horror story? and what are some of your favorite horror books/movies/etc. ?
again "The Day the World Broke" is so amazing I don't even know how to properly articulate how good it is
AHH THANK YOU this fills my cold dead heart to the brim with joy <3 I'm so glad you're enjoying it I'm truly so warmed by the fact that it has gotten any pick up at all given the wild genre!
And thank you for sending questions omg please don't mind me as a ramble for forever because I could talk about this kind of stuff all day (and I have, much to friend and family despair).
The impetus for TDTWB was actually me driving back late at night from a friend's place. It was REAL foggy, the kind of fog where you can't see in front of you and have to rely on the small road markers right as they come into sight. The mist in the story is almost its own character, I love how alive it feels (and how it sometimes very much IS alive, SOS). But that's where I kind of originally built the idea out on that drive home.
But I consume a huge amount of horror/suspense media so there are so many elements of different things that have kind of come together and coalesced into this story. You see a lot of elements of Silent Hill, Resident Evil, and Evil Within baked into it, especially with the monster element. I really wanted to go big or go home with some of those creatures. I myself love a good creature flick but there was nothing more fun for my friends and I screaming in front of a game when a new horrifying monster came on for us to fight. It just reminds me of those times, where it's scary, sure, but mostly the feeling of 'Oh my goooooood what the hell!' that I really enjoy.
There are also a ton of other movie influences and some of them are more subtle and based on singular scenes that get kind of expanded upon. For instance, there's a scene in the First Omen (skip over if you don't want to be spoiled for the scene, but it is in the trailer!) where our girl is sitting in a dark room, saying it isn't real, and a voice answers back "what's not real?". That stuck with me for a while I really loved that so a lot of Leo's Demon Shredder experience is kind of build on that singular feeling of sudden dread.
But as with some of the good horror movies, it's not just about the scares and the monsters. A real desire for me when writing horror is digging into that humanity piece, a concept you can see across a lot of horror series and books. I wanted each of these boys to have their own arc to contend with and some are more subtle and others are more, how you say, extremely obvious. But they were all very purposefully built in. It was important for me to make these characters vibrant and dimensional and it was not hard, because it's TMNT and we love these turtle boys! But I was hyper-aware that I'm doing an AU version that is pretty atypical, with what is essentially a regular family of teenagers having to navigate the end of the world. So I'm so touched that people love them as much as I do!
I don't even know if I'm answering the question at this point! My goodness. But I WILL wrap it up with some of my favorite recent media that I've consumed, otherwise this list would grow beyond anyone's desire to read <3
Books:
Hex by Thomas Oldeheuvelt (This felt like a really unique premise that really speaks to the whole humanity is the monster theme)
Sister, Maiden, Monster by Lucy A. Snyder (Not for the faint of heart! But boy was it a wild trip that I thought about for weeks after I finished it)
Movies:
Heretic (just came out, super eerie for me I loved the build up)
Smile 2 (I love me a movie that trips into Uncanny Valley, I found the scares unique and fun, but for me I loved the character, drew me right in!)
Oddity (SOOOO eerie, super obsessed with it)
TV Shows:
The Haunting of Hill House (I highly recommend this one for the family drama behind the horror, it's such a fun, beautiful time)
Thanks for the ask!! I really loved it, and I love talking about this story and horror so please ask away any time. Thank you so very much for reading the story too!

💛Smoshblr December Asks Day 21💙
Top 3 tropes in media/fanfic
So in terms of general concepts/tropes I enjoy in all media, there def any iteration of (Enemies/Rivals to) Friends to Lovers; then Found Family <3 and hurt/comfort -> especially in combo with one of the other two tropes!
When in comes to which types of fanfics I specifically seek out most of the time:
(putting these answers and the fanfic recs under the cut, cause this is once again getting way longer than I intended)
I know this is super unpopular, but I love well done miscommunication in fanfics! Hate it in most movies tho!!
-> also what I think constitutes “good” miscommunication basically boils down to “ is the miscommunication plot or character motivated?” cause in a lot of media the miscommunication feels forced and only meant to prolong or escalate the story
-> but if the miscommunication happens bc the characters are, for example, insecure about sharing certain info/feelings it is way more captivating and relatable (to me)
-> so this is ofc directly related to (Mutual) Pining <3 (plus also connected to another fave of mine: Memory Loss/Amnesia & also secret identity)
2. Forced proximity!!
-> I’m counting both sharing a bed and stuff like fake relationship under this umbrella
-> I just love when characters are forced to interact with each other in a different and typically more intimate way than they usually do! (and what it reveals about themselves and their relationship to eachother!)
3. Fix-it fanfics
-> I actually love original stories that have tragic endings! But there are many ways a story can end in a disappointing way and make me immeditaly turn to what all the wonderful fanfic authors have come up with in order to clean up the mess!
I have way too many favourite fanfics tbh... SO I'm actually gonna do both general and smosh ones I enjoyed a lot recently!
Multifandom (I am a huge podfic girlie, so I'm gonna give them a shoutout here!)
Harry Hart and the Honey Pot: An Indiana Jones Adventure - reena_jenkins, samanthahirr - Kingsman (Movies) [Archive of Our Own] -> I love me a good movie based AU from time to time and the kingsman fandom has so many great writers!
2. [podfic] tomorrow will always and forever now be today (tomorrow is our always and forever) - Matriaya - 9-1-1 (TV) [Archive of Our Own] -> this fic changed me as a person istg; like it is such an incredibly well done take on the timeloop trope, I'm-
3. Be My Savior - Chapter 1 - jessebee - Supernatural [Archive of Our Own] -> this is me coming out as lowkey more of a Sabriel than Destiel fan 🙈 Like ofc Destiel have the better canon story, and I do love them very much; However Sabriel fanfics captured my heart when I was a teenager and are still hanging on by a thread! (also I can still make myself cry instantly via a headcanon I created for them ages ago and that's gotta count for smth 😹)
Smosh Fanfics <3
In general of course any and all fics by Katie @jovenshires 🩷🩵 (love you and your writing to death istg🫶) but having to choose one for this, I'm gonna go with right where you left me - jovenshires (imdeansgirl) - Smosh [Archive of Our Own]
2. doing something like this right on the first try - halfwheeze - Smosh [Archive of Our Own] my most recent bookmark and 100% my fave fic I've read these past few weeks! But Mer 🖤💜@tommybowefuneralattendee has so many banger fanfics, it was super hard to choose! <3 But this fic made me truly ship nintendogs, so it deserves this mention
3. I abstained from choosing any of the amazing spommy fics by the lovely ppl I mentioned above, bc I might have spommy brainworms 24/7, but I cannot lose my multishipper rep! 😹🙈 But here is one of my other fave spommy fics from a different author! maybe my animals live in your zoo - creepysounds - Smosh [Archive of Our Own] edit: by the lovely @tommybones 🫶

Pretty good answers! :D
1: since being half-aliens, have they ever been treated “differently”? (Like the x-men/mutants in marvel)
2: how did they get into Dragonball? I say Kon & Tim introduced it to them (plus Jon)
3: how does one become a member of the titans of tomorrow/Star Knights?
4: what’s their opinion on the Netflix adaption of avatar the last airbender?
5: what’s their bedrooms look like? (I know Jake’s)
6: what does the members of titans of tomorrow/starknights look like? (Besides the duo & mar’i) do you use canon appearances?
Thanks Man, it’s really appreciated @pin-crusher2000 👍
1) While on the whole the two are respected quite well and even have some popularity at their respective schools, even now and then, especially in their earlier elementary school days, they would get picked on by some bullies for their little quirks as pertained by their origin points. Sure when in the field as heroes they can get intense scrutiny and even some bigotry based on their alien and technically mutant trait, it’s not really a thing that truly affects them as they’ve faced it beforehand and it really doesn’t matter as much as their real angsts in life
2) Oh my beyond doubt it was Kon and Jon to an extent that introduced the Duo to Dragon Ball, mainly after Jon got a manga volume of the original series when he was shopping for Naruto ones. Chris was interested in it so Jon went ahead to get it for his big brother and shortly then Jake looked up the original series online and once the two were able to sit and watch the series from there, the Duo’s fandom began in earnest.
3) Initiation comes with first proving yourself a trustworthy, reliable and honest type of hero that wants to hang out with them, basically earning their friendship which isn’t too hard. Honestly, both teams aren’t necessarily strict nor they ever relied on tests or the like unless the newest recruit requests them. That being said if you wanna be a true permanent member a lot faster for the StarKnights in particular, you are dared to spend a day wearing a blue and pink tutu and later last through eating there entire bowls of Brussels sprouts.
4) At first Chris and Jake were genuinely enthusiastic as the look of the show and the effects promised something that would be faithful in its own way to the show that started it all. Overtime though with each new announcement made to change the story and character details which are true deviations from the source material, that enthusiasm quickly gave way to caution and weariness. They can only hope it’s not as bad as that live action movie which was the first attempt at adapting that show.
5) I picture Chris having redwood hardwood floors couple with orange carpets and rugs laid out all over, his Queen sized bed next to the window, two glass sliding doors for his closet, a small two shelves dresser next to said bed, drawers and cabinets on the opposite side of the bed which on top of one is his TV and video game consoles, his action figures, and even a Straight Ally flag. At one empty corner would be his electric Bass Guitar and inside the closet and dresser are his comic books. Finally in the bed itself, he has a grey and white comforter which is topped by his favorite Sky Blue Blanket with an S Shield on it.
6) Well, for Jasper Logan in particular since he’s an OC created by an old mutual of mine and a fan art, this link here should help you get a visual on what he looks like
Otherwise, fudging with the ages a bit, the StarKnights and the Titans of Tomorrow have their physical appearances based on canonical forms. Only tiny change I can think of being for Irey and Jai having Dark Yellow and Lime Green respectively as part of their super suits to help distinguish them.

"A Facade of Indifference."
Summary: Undertaker has had many identities, but Cedric K. Ros will forever be his favorite.
Trigger warnings: nothing is super explicit, but there are mentions of canonical character deaths. One of which includes a child.
A/N: For this story - O!Ciel = Fenian, R!Ciel = Ciel
--
In his long life, Undertaker has gone by many names.
His original name, lost to time and memories he’d do anything not to recall.
136649, the number assigned to him by the higher ups.
Silver fox, by his coworker.
But truly, his favorite name, the only name that has ever mattered to him, was Cedric K. Ross.
He’d introduced himself as such to Claudia Phantomhive, flustered by her beauty and wit. The name was less a clever pun on his end, and more a scramble to tell the beautiful debutante something, anything so she didn’t think him daft.
It had been-at that point-close to twenty years since he had destroyed Shinigami headquarters. Occasionally he’d catch a glimpse of a death scythe, and he’d have to stop what he was doing to duck into a shop. Quite annoying, but headquarters hadn’t really made an effort to come collect him. If he knew better, Cedric might have said that they were scared of him.
But, still, it didn’t hurt to keep a low profile.
Getting married to a noble was the exact opposite of that. The queen’s watchdog, at that. His hatred for the hag knows no bounds. Ironically, her audacity also knows no bounds. So, maybe it balances out. Somehow.
Marrying into the Phantomhive family is akin to signing your own death certificate. It’s dangerous and deadly, and Claudia tells him over and over that she won’t resent him for leaving. That she would forgive him everything if he didn’t want to risk his life.
But Cedric never cared much for living anyway.
They wed, and barely a year later, Vincent was born.
Holding his son for the first time (and really all the times after that) was an experience he looks back on with a gentle sort of fondness. And that fondness only grew tenfold as his boy grew older.
And then, two years later, in the middle of January, his daughter was born. Francis took more after him in looks than her mother, but she was still undeniably Claudia’s daughter. From the time she could speak, she was ordering her brother to behave. Her strength and courage, which grew day by day, made his heart swell with pride. He did everything in his power to encourage her, including giving her fencing lessons (which his dear wife had not been entirely pleased with).
There’s no words to describe how much he loved his family.
And that, that love, made him worry.
Love is a weakness his higher-ups might use against him. The idea of his clever, beautiful Claudia, and their two (still young) children being harmed, made panic well up inside him. He couldn’t let that happen.
He wouldn’t allow that to happen.
So, he left them.
Claudia was the sole breadwinner anyway, and the children had Tanaka to tend to them. He left only a note behind, making a vague excuse as to why he had to leave them.
He left England behind, choosing to travel the world. Cedric fights the urge to return to his family, to check in on them. He celebrates each of their birthdays and his and Claudia’s anniversary with a baked good.
Life wasn’t great then, he missed his family so much it physically hurt, but it was for the best he stayed away.
And then, while in the middle of a trip to France, he got news of Claudia’s death.
Cedric had known loss long before that moment. Before becoming a grim reaper and long after. It was hard coded into his very being, the knowledge of life and death.
But it wasn’t until that moment that he understood the grief that comes with that very same loss. That all encompassing, suffocating feeling of heaviness. Of loneliness.
Of the hard, cold truth, that his decision to leave his family might have, in the end, been the very thing to damn them.
He returned to England, but not as Cedric, father of Vincent and Francis Phantomhive. No, that wouldn’t do. How could he call himself their father when he was the very reason their mother was dead.
Cedric kept to the shadows, tinkering with life and death itself. He watched with an aching heart, as his son became earl. The Queen’s Watchdog just like his mother before him.
But Cedric has never been one to be content with simply watching, so he crafted an identity. One that fit his morbid curiosity with all things death.
The Undertaker.
His hair-which he neglected in the months following Claudia’s death-hide his face, his identity. He works his way into his son’s graces by offering up information, and soon Cedric Undertaker found himself among the Phantomhives’ closest associates.
His children didn’t recognize him, or at least were excellent at pretending they didn’t. It hurt, a little, but he was content with finally seeing them in-person. Alive and well.
Francis married first. Thankfully out of the Phantomhive line, but still under the queen’s immediate demand. Alexis-for all his faults-seemed nice enough, and he was hopelessly in love with her. And she-in return-was just as in love with him.
And, while it was hard watching his daughter get married, the pure happiness she radiated put his wary mind at ease.
Her happiness only grew when she gave birth to Edward. His first grandchild, though he wasn’t allowed to share in the joy of the new arrival. Not because Francis didn’t trust him, no not at all. He….just couldn’t bring himself to hold something so precious and small and-
Elizabeth was born a few years later, just as small, just as precious as her brother before.
Vincent married second, to a beautiful but sickly young woman, Rachel. By then, Undertaker was used to his new identity. He grew close to his son, but maintained just enough distance for plausible deniability.
When Rachel fell pregnant, his son shared his worries with him. His usual cocky, confident persona fell away, showing all the hurt Cedric left behind.
It seemed, even with Tanaka and Claudia, his son (and most probably his daughter) needed him. He vowed to be a better father, a better grandfather even if it was from the shadows, under a different name.
The twins were born a few months later. Both somehow even tinier than their cousins. This time, though, he pushed all his worries aside to hold one of the twins.
Ciel and Fenian. One and the same. But Ciel-older than his brother by a mere five minutes-was announced the heir to the Phantomhive name.
Meanwhile, Fenian-who didn’t seem to cry as loud as his brother-was pushed into his arms. His pathetic attempts at crying out instantly ceased. Big blue eyes, just like Lady Rachel’s, stared up at him.
Then and there, he made another vow, a promise. To protect his grandchildren no matter what. To preserve their innocence and curiosity.
His grandchildren grew quickly. The twins-mirror images of one another-became harder and harder to tell apart. At least, for most people.
For him, though, it was extremely easy to pick apart who was who.
Ciel reminded him of Vincent - sharp features that he would no doubt grow into, a silver tongue, and an intelligence that rivaled most adults. He embodied what an heir of Phantomhive should be.
And little Fenian. All soft features and big eyes. He took more after his mother's side, particularly her red haired sister (Angeline, if he remembered correctly). He inherited his mother’s sickness, and his aunt’s painful shyness and bookishness. Only his love for chess and his physical appearance being so similar to his brother’s denoted him as a Phantomhive.
But the character he crafted shouldn’t care that the twins are two separate people. The Phantomhive family is a blob of faceless members, all tied together by either blood, a last name, or both.
He kept up the facade of indifference, not caring to differentiate between the twins out loud. But, in his head, while reading them a book, or holding the blanket in place so they could have their photo taken, he couldn’t help but refer to each of them by name.
And then, the massacre happened.
He wept for hours, over the broken, ruined remains of the estate. His son and daughter-in-law were nothing but ash by the time he could rummage through the wreckage. The twins were gone too, though most likely still alive.
He didn’t know if that was a good thing.
He packed his wagon with all the bodies that weren’t horrifically burnt. A project he’d been working on needed more test subjects.
Undertaker spends the next few weeks working day and night to find the twins. Reports of children’s bodies being dumped on the sides of roads come flooding in, but
no one does a single thing.
The queen, with her bleeding heart, that she just loved to wax poetic about, does nothing.
He traced the reports back to a cathedral. The building was old and worn, likely abandoned by the church years ago. Shinigami stand around, watching the building. They chat idly among themselves, as if the most depraved actions aren’t being done to the children inside.
That apathy, the disconnect from the pain and suffering, was one thing Undertaker would never miss from his days in retrieval.
But them being there meant he couldn’t burst in and save them. If even one recognized him, then it would be game over. No one else would be coming to save the twins. The police refused to act, even with the amount of evidence Undertaker sent them (under a different name, of course), and their family was in shambles.
Unfortunately, by the time he could sneak past, it was already too late.
Ciel was dead, soul gone. And Fenian’s soul was damned, signed over to the leeches of leeches, a demon.
He saved his grandson’s body, carrying him from the burning wreckage of the cathedral. Blood and grime clinging to him like a second skin.
Fenian became Ciel, and was crowned earl of the house of Phantomhive. Her majesty either not noticing or caring enough, made the traumatized ten-and-a-half-year-old her watchdog.
The only thing Undertaker hated more than her, was the demon slowly eating away at his grandson’s soul. Not his physical soul, of course, that bit would come later. But his spirit, his kindness and generosity. The hope and child-like spark in his one uncovered eye.
It pained him, but he had a character to play and a plan to see through. If all went well, the demon wouldn’t be bothering Fenian for long.
He offered up information when prompted, though he never made it easy. It’s surprisingly easy to annoy the little earl, but it’s a necessary evil to ensure neither the demon, nor his grandson suspect him of anything.
It worked. Maybe a little too well, because the look his grandson sent him could only be described as betrayed.
His heart clenched painfully in his chest. How much trust had the little Phantomhive put in him?
Too much, was the answer. And somehow, not enough.
His plan went awry. Everything became jumbled, snowballing until he’s watching Fenian plummet thirty feet downwards. His mourning chain, the one containing the last remaining piece of his Claudia (of his friends murdered in cold blood by her royal highness). Through the chaos the little earl and he made eye contact.
For a singular moment, he was back in the nursery, holding his grandson. Little Fenian, who was never supposed to amount to much. Tiny and sickly and a pale comparison to his already more lively older brother. Eyes of bright blue that once held hope and promise.
Eyes that now stare up at him in fear, yes, but also in acute curiosity, locked on his mourning chain.
He allows the little Phantomhive to take it. It’s his greatest treasure, but he’s sure his grandson will take excellent care of it. Besides, isn’t passing things down what a grandparent’s supposed to do? And he isn’t much worried about losing it anyway, after all, he’s quite certain that they’ll be meeting again very soon.

things that i find interesting about the arc re: tim's mom dying & tim becoming robin officially:
-bruce going coming to comfort tim re: his parents' kidnapping and after his mom's death while wearing the cowl
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-bruce pushing tim to try to understand the meaning of a mask, and its double-edged nature
Tumblr media
-ending w/ bruce calling tim robin for the first time while he isn't wearing the mask at all
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
obviously this arc is super super explicitly About Identity (it's called identity crisis, lmao), but i do actually like what it's doing with those themes!! it's digging into some really fun contradictions, both on purpose and not - bruce is trying to get tim to understand the full weight and meaning of the mask at the same time as bruce is unable to take it off and comfort this kid bc he's still too stuck in his own grief and the past. the whole reason tim got to (start to) become robin in the first place is bc he gave a speech about symbols, and now batman is giving him speeches right back about the mask as a symbol to explain why he's not ready yet. the conversation above where batman says sometimes it's okay to trust your instincts is directly in conversation w/ what happened to jason - pages earlier tim imagines jason telling him that jason basically killed himself by rushing in without thinking, which, that sure sounds like how bruce would explain that! - but this time it's okay, because tim didn't die and he saved the day (with a lot of research and prep and whatever, but still! the inherent contradiction of trust your instincts!) and it's also not-on purpose in conversation w/ steph's stint as robin, when bruce gives her the same follow my orders to the letter or you're done ultimatum, steph ignore him to save him, and bruce says good instincts but you're fired
it feels totally futile to talk about the contradictions in bruce's choices or worldview over the course of actual real life decades bc like, of course. how many different writers, how many different story arcs, how many different directions for the character - but it's interesting! i like the fact that bruce is kinda impossible to deal w/ on things like this, bc the questions of how to be the perfect hero or how to never get your teen sidekick killed or whatever else are literally impossible to solve. u can't get it right all the time. you give your teen sidekick speeches about the dangers of the mask and then you show up to comfort him from a nightmare about losing his mother in a mask bc you can't figure out how to make your own emotions something you think he can see. like. it's more interesting that it's a total mess than if it were neat and clear all the time
it's a cool arc in a few respects, bc i think it throws up a bunch of stuff that feels super foundational to tim's relationship to bruce, to batman, and to robin; and to bruce's relationship w/ batman, robin, tim, and himself - HOWEVER and originally this was how this post started and then i got off track - it is so hard to read and so hard to recommend bc of the virulent racism all up and down the book. the depiction of the haitian villains is just straight-up bad and i hate it. lots of interesting character stuff but truly at what cost.
tldr all of this is the oldest of news but it's interesting to me!!! i saw the post going around about some of tim's nightmares, and most of them r from these two arcs OR from right after steph and his dad's deaths, and it got me back 2 thinking about some of the things that i do find worth thinking about in an arc that is otherwise pretty rough!
