I remember watching adam siao him fa skate on-and-off since he debuted in seniors, but this program is absolutely insane. I don't think I've ever really seen a skater this artistically dynamic, recklessly daring, and attentive to detail before? it's unique. the speed is so intense that I had to check if the playback speed was normal, god.
(what do you even call that move?? he literally leaped and became a windmill)

Let's talk about Shoma...NHK edition...
Two 2nd places and Shoma is in the GPF. He had a much better free skate than at CoC. So it should be something to be happy about. But clearly I am not.
If you have seen my post from CoC you know that I am not upset about Shoma getting 2nd, I am upset about the way he got 2nd. Fight me on this but in any other tech panel of the season he would have a 195+ score for his skate, if not even 200. (And if you looked at the tech box it was 106 TES and that would have given him a 198 score even with those PCS) I don't want to speculate about any political games or anything, for now I simply want to believe Shoma was simply disliked by the tech panel ppl.
(And btw I like Yuma a lot and I am happy he is back! Iif one is winning over Shoma, I am happy if it's Yuma just not like this and this isn't Yuma's fault ofc, so nothing against Yuma.)
What's most sad about Shoma's silver today is that it made him question competing and his abilties. 😭😭😭
He felt good about his performance and then tech panel completely deflated all positive feelings. His comments are so defeated. Ofc he is Shoma so his reaction is still polite and everything and he smiled at Yuma and interacted like normal. But still this is a new low. He perfomed good, he did all combos, landed the 4F and Axels that he was insecure about in the practice, even yoloed a 4T which alone shows his superiority bc who else can do that??? And yet it wasn't enough for the fcking judges to give him high scores.
We all knew Shoma wasn't gonna skate forever and I always knew that it could very well be his last season, but his comments didn't sound so final, so I thought there was maybe a tiny bit hope he'd still continue. But today I am not even sure he will not retire after Nats. I have my doubt he would neglect the opportunity if he's selected for Worlds but if you'd ask him today he probably won't go. Pulling a Tatsuki Machida never seemed more real...and part of me wouldn't even mind. I would lie if I say I won't be sad about Shoma's retirement, but all I really want is him happy and if competing isn't making him happy anymore...better retire on own terms than the Jfed and ISU waving you goodbye by lowballing you...
I hope though that while his comments now are negative, that he will rethink the attitude bc it's not him who has reached a limit or who isn't capable of better scores, it's a fcking judging mishap. Keiji said his 4Loop was brilliant and rotation clean, Shoma himself said he was surprised about the 4Lo and 4T being called (as he could see his landing), Stephane shook his head at the score, no it's not your fault Shoma. And I hope he gets the prep talks of his life by his surroundings!
There are two ways this could lead to, Shoma being on the verve of retiring and motivation for competition is completely lost or Shoma is fired up and rebounds stronger than ever from this disappointment with new fire. As Shoma fans we have seen many ups and downs of Shoma and usually Shoma always came back stronger. Ppl saying that's the end for him after IdF 2019 -he went on to win JNats, ppl saying he is done at WTT 2021 proceeds to win an Olympic medal and World Gold 2022, let's see what happens now...atm a positive way seems impossible but after a few days the world may not seem as dark...
I am truly furious for his 2nd place and petty me who thought I could stand seeing Shoma in 2nd is now completely on skating gods pls let Shoma win all Gold medals from now on as perfect revenge arc 🔥🔥🔥

how rare and beautiful it truly is that we exist
@sunsetcurvecuddles somehow got me to start thinking about Sunset Curve in an urban fantasy verse and like... I was considering sleep and ended up writing like 200 words of dot points about it.
The series features Reggie as a witch of some power (combining technology and magic is his specialty), Bobby as a necromancer (necromancers aren’t all bad!), Luke who is not a siren (though many, many people think otherwise), and Alex who has some kind of plant power (they’re figuring it out).
the best magic (isn’t really magic at all) is a fun little piece about the boys and their shennigans and i tripped into your eyes (they contain worlds) is where Alex and Willie first meet. And I promise, there’s definitely more to come.
Snippets below the line
snippet from the best magic (isn’t really magic at all):
“Leaving us without supervision is a terrible idea,” Luke tells Reggie seriously like Reggie is adequate supervision—like one of the rules of the band isn’t ‘don’t let Reggie supervise’. To be fair, the rules also say ‘Alex is not supervision when there are pretty boys around’ and ‘Luke’s only allowed to leave in music-related situations’ and ‘Bobby’s supervision is to be avoided’.
The rules aren’t really rules. Maybe they’d be more official if they wrote it on a piece of paper that wasn’t hung up with darts and didn’t have math homework on the back of it? Thoughts for a future time.
“What did you do this time?” Reggie asks, grinning, because of course his boys did something.
“Nothing!” Alex squeaks, eyes wide, and clearly flustered so not only did they do something dumb; they probably did something they really shouldn’t have. Alex shoves at the other two, turning them towards the door.
“I’ll tell you when your shift’s over,” Bobby mouths just before he goes.
snippet from i tripped into your eyes (they contain worlds):
An arm drops heavily onto his shoulders and then Reggie and Luke are there. Alex’s shoulders sink, a little, under their weight and he relaxes somewhat. “His name’s Alex,” Luke says. “And he’ll be willing to take an apology in the form of a date.”
That grabs Alex’s attention. “Luke!”
Willie looks up at him with dark eyes and Alex forgets about Luke. “I’d like that.”
“Really?”
Willie smiles, eyes soft. “Really,” he says. “I can give you my number? We can organise it for some time in the next week.”
“Sounds perfect,” Reggie chirps, stealing Alex’s phone out of his pocket and handing it over. “He’s got work tomorrow and Thursday, but he’s free all of Tuesday and Wednesday.”
“I’m free Wednesday as well,” Willie says, handing the phone back to Alex, who takes it without thinking. But he’s not looking at Reggie or Luke, he’s staring straight at Alex. “I’ll see you then.” He winks and then he’s off, skating away.

Skate America 2019 Preview
After what seems both an eternity and no time at all, the season is getting started in earnest now with start of the Grand Prix series. Two of the top teams from last season will be debuting their programs here, and there should be a thrilling battle both for the podium places and among the non medal contenders. In case you haven’t been following the ice dance goings on quite as obsessively as we have, we’ve compiled some basic profiles for all the teams here as a quick refresher before we try to find the answer to the most mysterious question of all: What is score?
Laurence Fournier-Beaudry/ Nikolaj Sorensen CAN
Age: 27/30
Started Skating Together: 2012
Coach: Marie-France Dubreuil, Patrice Lauzon, Romain Haguenaeur
Season's Best: 201.00
Rhythm Dance: Bonnie and Clyde
Free Dance: Cry Me a River feat. Buble
Our newest Canadians have been having a great early season and will be looking to continue riding this upward momentum here. We might not know what a score is, but they're one of three teams in this event to have already broken 200, and the only one of those three to have competed already this season, which at least in theory, should give them the advantage. Their rhythm dance is already a fan favorite, drawing a lot of acclaim for their style and power, in addition to their incredibly thematic twizzles. Their free dance is dynamic and energetic, highlighting the strength of their skating and their power across the ice. They're such mature, detailed performers, with a strong connection that adds a sensuality to this dramatic program. They seemed primed for a podium position here, although which medal is a little unclear at the moment. Having had the chance to get feedback and competitive experience with these programs is a bonus for them, but it's hard to know how their potential rivals are looking right now. If Fournier-Beaudry/Sorensen can focus on themselves and deliver to the best of their ability, the judges might not care what the others have to offer.
Hong Chen/ Zhuoming Sun CHN
Age: 25/24
Started Skating Together: 2018
Coach: Marie-France Dubreuil, Patrice Lauzon, Romain Haguenaeur
Personal Best: 156.89
Rhythm Dance: Swing
Free Dance: It's All Coming Back to Me Now
A fairly new team that has a great opportunity this season, having not one but two grand prix assignments. China has been developing their dance program in recent years, and these two have shown a lot of growth, recently catching a lot of eyes at 4CC last season. For these two, the important thing isn't results or scores, it's just steadily growing and getting the experience they need to develop as a team, while showing off the lightness of their skating.
Marie-Jade Lauriault/ Romain Le Gac FRA
Age: 22/24
Started Skating Together: 2014
Coach: Marie-France Dubreuil, Patrice Lauzon, Romain Haguenaeur
Season's Best:182.91
Rhythm Dance: Les Demoiselles de Rochefort
Free Dance: Harmonium Medley
Les Marrieds are always a solid, reliable team, and they've taken this season to explore new directions. While most of the teams have taken this season's RD theme as a chance to ham it up and play to the audience(this is not a complaint), Lauriault/ Le Gac have gone for a more sweeping, grand, romantic feel. While our bias generally runs towards the showier, more fun programs, there is something very fresh about their rhythm dance which is put together quite well. We may have some questions about the tone shift in their free dance, but they skate and perform both sections very well, even if the transition is jarring. Their height difference has always lent itself to some great lifts, and this season is no exception. As a team they’ve stayed very steady but haven’t managed much of breakthrough in the increasingly crowded ice dance mid-tier, but with some new French teams on the rise they could face some real national competition for that number two position soon which could be great motivation for them.
Sofia Shevchenko/ Igor Eremenko RUS
Age: 17/22
Started Skating Together: 2014
Coach: Irina Zhuk and Alexander Svinin
Personal Best: 170.66
Rhythm Dance: Burlesque
Free Dance: Give Us A Little Love
The reigning junior grand prix final champs and junior world bronze medallists are making their senior debut here alongside their much more experienced training mates Stepanova/Bukin. For those unfamiliar with this young team, you're in for a real treat. While the choice of music in the rhythm dance does not spark joy for us, their infectious enthusiasm and performance quality makes us forget our mild distaste for Burlesque Finnstep. They have some really amazing and unique lifts, partially from how flexible she is, and their twizzles are consistently some of the toughest, even when they were still juniors. They're developing a really unique, modern style, as exemplified in this free dance that we struggle to describe accurately. It's something that you really need to see for yourself, and it deserves to be seen by a wider audience. Historically Shevchenko/Eremenko have struggled with levels, but last season they won multiple events on the strength of their TES, and hopefully they will be continuing these new, less stressful habits into their senior career.
Alexandra Stepanova/ Ivan Bukin RUS
Age: 24/26
Started Skating Together: 2006
Coach: Irina Zhuk and Alexander Svinin
Personal Best: 208.52
Rhythm Dance: Sparkling Diamonds
Free Dance: Cry Me A River feat. Timberlake
The reigning European silver medalists haven't had a chance to show their programs yet, much less compete, so we're going to have stick to generalities, such as the fact that somehow two(2) completely different teams picked two(2) completely different songs called Cry Me A River about getting cheated on. The skating hivemind is truly wild sometimes. These two just missed the world podium last season and will be out for vengeance, starting here. Their free dance music choice has sparked plenty of opinions, but historically they're fabulous performers with a lot of chemistry and interesting elements, so we should have that to look forward to. The path to making GPF is going to be harder for everyone this year, and without seeing their programs it's hard to say if they're going to make it or not. But it’s a long season and Stepanova/Bukin with their unique flair will absolutely be contenders.
Tiffany Zagorski/ Jonathan Guerreiro RUS
Age: 25/28
Started Skating Together: 2014
Coach: Svetlana Alexeeva, Elena Kustarova, Olga Riabinina
Personal Best: 184.37
Rhythm Dance: The Greatest Showman
Free Dance: Survivor
Zagorski/Guerreiro have had something of a rocky career thus far. Last season they earned two GP medals and a berth to GPF, where they placed #notlast, and seemed to be set up for their breakthrough season before disaster struck at Nationals. They've had a lot of time to recover from the unfortunate bootlace incident and lingering injuries, and were able to show their new programs at test skates, although they did not have the opportunity to compete prior to this to set some sort of baseline for their scores if that is even a thing at this point. Their strong basics and long lines are always a treat, and they hit some really interesting positions. Their programs are quite interesting this year, complex and modern and unlike other programs in the field. We do kind of hope that they've gone another round with the music editor since the test skates, but even with the somewhat chaotic edits there's a lot to like about both programs. We were especially intrigued by their free dance, a dark, moody, atmospheric piece that's completely different from last season and yet feels like a natural continuation. They have some really nice lifts, including a nice straightline lift where she jumps over his shoulder to balance on his back. While their chances of making another trip to GPF this season don't seem high, they've got every chance to begin making their case for the world team starting here, and wiping everyone's memory of how last season ended for them.
Olivia Smart/ Adrian Diaz ESP
Age: 22/29
Started Skating Together: 2016
Coach: Marie-France Dubreuil, Patrice Lauzon, Romain Haguenaeur
Season's Best: 187.55
Rhythm Dance: Grease
Free Dance: Sad Clowns
It wasn't long ago that the idea of there being a Spanish ice dance battle, much less a thrilling one, was fairly implausible, but that's what we have for what is now the fourth season in a row. Smart/Diaz are no doubt on a quest to win back their National Title and get the lone worlds spot, and having a strong showing at their grand prix assignments is the first step. They're making great use of their strong performance quality this season, especially in their incredibly fun Grease rhythm dance that is just a three minute display of what showmanship means. Their free dance isn't quite hitting the mark for us yet, but again they show their great skills in playing characters, as well as some truly stunning technical upgrades like their lifts, or the cartwheel transition between their first and second set of twizzles. What is score but theirs have been steadily climbing so far this season and this will be their chance to set the Grand Prix bar before Hurtado/Khaliavin compete at Skate Canada. It's going to be a struggle to make the podium but even a top 5 finish is a great result in this field.
Christina Carreira/ Anthony Ponomarenko USA
Age: 19/18
Started Skating Together: 2014
Coach: Igor Shpilband and Pasquale Carmerlengo
Season's Best: 190.35
Rhythm Dance: Too Darn Hot
Free Dance: Flamenco Medley
These highly talented ice dance teens have already gotten this season off to a strong start and will be looking to continue that here. They're a fast, powerful, dynamic team with a lot of charisma, and their programs both utilize these qualities in different ways. We especially like their rhythm dance-- we only went one season without a fun, upbeat SD/RD/whatever from Carreira/Ponomarenko but it felt like an eternity. Their performance style and skating is just so big, there are few teams that can match their amplitude. Their free dance isn't quite as naturally attuned to their talents as their rhythm dance, but is coming along very nicely, showcasing their power and intensity, one of the hardest twizzle sequences we've seen this season, and a neat cartwheel in the choreographic steps. Having had a couple weeks to rest from their gruelling challenger series schedule and continue to refine their programs, we hope to see even further improvement from them. Between their charm, difficulty, and sheer basic quality, they have every opportunity to place well here, even if the podium might be out of reach.
Caroline Green/ Michael Parsons USA
Age: 16/24
Started Skating Together: 2019
Coach: Elena Novak and Alexei Kiliakov
Season's Best: 170.53
Rhythm Dance: Cry Baby
Free Dance: Woodkid Medley
Team Birthday Buddies with their first GP as a team, and her first senior Grand prix event at all. While their eight year age gap raised eyebrows and concerns(including, admittedly, ours), from their first outing it became immediately clear just why these two teamed up. Having trained with the same coaches all their lives, their technique, timing, and way of moving were so similar off the bat that they look like they've already been partnered for years. They have great skating skills and the partnering is very natural and smooth. Even Michael taking a dive at the end of their step sequence in the rhythm dance can't detract from that, and their enthusiasm carries this program, particularly hers. Despite her young age, Caroline is a budding diva and Michael matches her energy perfectly, whether it be the goofy high energy of their rhythm dance, or the intensity and drama of their free. With how fast these two are coming together, I'd keep an eye on their results here-- who knows, they might develop fast enough to make the battle at Nationals very exciting.
Madison Hubbell/ Zachary Donohue USA
Age: 28/28
Started Skating Together: 2011
Coach: Marie-France Dubreuil, Patrice Lauzon, Romain Haguenaeur
Personal Best: 210.40
Rhythm Dance: My Heart Belongs to Daddy/Let's Be Bad
Free Dance: A Star is Born
Yes, you read that music info correctly, and yes, the song IS as bad as it sounds. Two time and reigning National Champions and world medalists are coming off a somewhat up and down season, winning all their events in the first half of the season only to infamously crash off the podium at 4CC and then rally for the bronze at worlds, majorly editing their programs multiple times along the way. This season they've opted for a later start, aiming to get their programs right from the outset rather than having to constantly make changes throughout the season. The mods remain somewhat uncertain if deciding to skate to the borderline nauseating "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" is the best way to achieve this, but perhaps we will better understand the hidden ingenuity of this choice when we actually see the program. A Star is Born should be a good vehicle for them, sweeping and romantic with big, powerful vocals to match their big, powerful skating. Without their actual programs, we can't say much more, but they're an experienced, high level team that brings their innate qualities to the material, even if it's somewhat lackluster as it has been at times in the past. Starting off their season with a win here will go a long way to assuaging doubts about their continued success, as well as more concretely line them up for another trip to GPF to try to defend their title.

Sports Trivia - Truly Amazing Athletes
Tumblr media
Who is the only athlete to win multiple medals at both the summer and winter Olympics?
Answer: Clara Hughes
Clara Hughes was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on the 27th of September 1972. Clara won her first two Olympic medals in Atlanta Georgia. She competed in the individual cycling road race and the individual time trial event. She was able to win bronze in both events.
Clara then turned her attention to the winter Olympics. She competed in the 5000m speed skating event in the games in Salt Lake City in 2002. She won a bronze medal for her efforts. Clara then continued and competed in the games held in Torino where she captured gold in the 5000m speed skating event. She also won a silver medal at the games in the team pursuit.
In 2010 at the Vancouver Olympic games Clara achieved a bronze medal in the ladies 5000m speed skating.
Clara is not only a decorated athlete but is a big supporter of the charity, "Right to Play". She has also been awarded the Order of Canada and the order of Manitoba. Clara Hughes is truly one of the great Olympians.
Who holds the record for the most gold medals at an Olympic games?
Answer: Michael Phelps
In 2008 at the games held in Beijing Michael was able to win eight gold medals. All his medals were in the pool. Michael won the 100m fly, 200m free, 200m fly, 200 m individual medley, 400m individual medley, 4x 100m freestyle relay, 4x100 medley relay and the 4x 200m freestyle relay.
Michael added these eight gold to the six gold and two bronze medals that he won in the games in 2004. Michael has won more gold medals than any other athlete in the history of the modern Olympics. His Olympic medal total is second only to the 18 medals that were won by Larissa Latynina the famous Russian gymnast.
Michael was born in Baltimore, Maryland on the 30th of June 1985. Michael was diagnosed at the age of seven with ADD. To help him burn off energy he was put into swimming.
Michael has founded the Michael Phelps Foundation, which is a charity that advocates swimming and water safety for children. He is also a co-founder of the Swim with the Stars program.
Who holds the record in the Guinness Book of World Records as the most versatile female athlete?
Answer: "Babe" Mildred Ella Didrikson Zaharias
Mildred was born in Port Arthur, Texas on the 26th of June 1911. She was one of seven children born to Ole and Hannah Didriksen. She would change the spelling of her last name when she was older. The name 'Babe' was a childhood nickname that stayed with her all her life.
Mildred was truly one of the greatest athletes of all time. In 1932, she went to the Amateur Athletic Union Championships. She won eight of the ten events that she competed in and won the team championship. Babe was the only person on her team.
In 1932, Babe went to the Olympics in Los Angeles. She won two gold medals and one silver. She won gold in the 80m hurdles and the javelin. Her silver medal came in the sport of high jump.
Babe's most recognized sports achievements would be in golf. In what was truly an amazing career Babe won 82 golf tournaments. She won the ladies Grand Slam of golf in 1950. Some of her records in golf have never been broken.
Sadly, Babe was diagnosed with colon cancer in 1953. She underwent surgery and continued to play golf, although she limited the number of tournaments that she competed in. In 1955, the cancer returned and Babe died at the age of 45 in Galveston, Texas.

6 Ways to Enjoy a Caribbean Cruise When You're a Cheap Introvert
Tumblr media
The word "vacation" means something a little different to everyone. Pristine ski slopes, powder-white beaches, Amazon jungles, rolling Highlands, a cabin in the woods—the settings are as various as the activities. But in general, the point of vacation is to change your scenery, to recharge, and to reaffirm your appreciation for life. As for me, it doesn't matter where I am so much as what I'm doing. Rather, what I'm not doing, which is anything. Daily life is way too busy already. Vacation shouldn't be. It should be a time when I can sit back, take a deep breath, and forget about all of my worldly stress. Which means, ideally, that the vacation won't cost much money or force me to be around a lot of people since both of these things cause me stress. So why, oh why, did I agree when my wife suggested that we go on a cruise?
To put it simply, she tricked me. "I earned it through Beach Body," she said. "All we have to pay for is our plane tickets," she said. Whoa, a free vacation? As someone who hates spending money on frivolous luxuries, the word "free" is of particular appeal. But I should have known… Nothing's free in Waterworld. And as our departure date neared, I started regretting the decision before I ever stepped foot on the boat. But since we'd already committed, I knew I had to make the most of it. I knew I'd regret it even more if I spent money to be surrounded by strangers if I didn't find a way to enjoy myself. And when I started looking for that silver lining, there was plenty of joy to be found. In fact, by the time we returned home to our screaming, squealing daughters, I was actually happy that we'd made the trip. The reasons for my change of heart are many, but there were six things that really made all the difference, and here they are...
Tumblr media
1) Understand what you're getting into. You're not going to a resort. You're not going to a hotel on the beach. You're boarding a floating city that will carry you thousands of miles across open, international waters, some of which are over a mile deep. This city is filled with thousands of other people, the majority of whom you've never seen before and will never see again. Once this city leaves land, it has a finite amount of everything. This is hard to remember when you shower with drinkable water and eat so much gourmet food that the mention of chocolate lava cake makes you want to throw up, but if you only bring a 3 oz bottle of contact solution, you will be keeping track of how much you use each day and calculating if you'll have enough to last you until you return home. At least, I did. I'm sure it's different for everyone, but this fact really made the ship's extravagance all the more amazing for me. Especially when I counted over 100 events on ONE day's itinerary list—everything from no-limit Texas Holdem in the casino to competitive rock climbing to fully immersive ice-skating shows, all on that one single boat. My wife and I fell into a rhythm eventually, which allowed us to spend less time wandering aimlessly and more time participating in the things we loved (mostly eating and falling asleep in lounge chairs on the top deck), but it took a while. Which is why I wish someone would have told me this piece of advice before I left—YOUR FIRST DAY WILL BE STRESSFUL.
Whether you're flying or driving to your port, travel isn't much fun. And when you begin the boarding process at your ship, it just gets worse. It's like TSA security combined with border security, and then you add in the cruise line's private rules and regulations, and you're rushed through the whole thing as fast as humanly possible. And when it's all done, you're shoved onto the floating city and set loose. The experience reminded me of the time when I took a bus into NYC's Union Station, and then walked up the steps and took my first glimpse of Times Square. Trust me, you're going to want to find the nearest chair and just sit for a moment. Even though there will be people running around everywhere, you're in no rush to go anywhere or do anything. Just take a minute (or thirty) to look around, people watch, and breathe. Slowly, you'll start putting the pieces together. Your room and your checked luggage (yes, you have to check your luggage when you board the ship) won't generally be ready for a few hours, so you can grab a bite to eat (once you figure out which restaurants are included and which cost money, but more on that later) or just wander around for a while. It's likely that you'll get lost, but that's okay. Even though it looks like you're in the middle of downtown, you really are on a ship. You can't get that lost. Most importantly, just remember that your first day will be spent learning the rules and settling in. There will be little to no relaxation. As long as you go in knowing that, you'll be much less frustrated and anxious. At least until you start trying to figure out what foods and activities are "complimentary," and which cost extra. Which brings me to my next point…
Tumblr media
2) Buy everything ahead of time, or not at all. If you drink alcohol, you have two options—spend a boatload (pun intended) of money or smuggle in your own booze. If you choose the former option, you can go about it two different ways. Either you can pay per drink (which is really only an option if you plan to drink sparingly since they're $10-$15/drink) or purchase a drink package. If you go for the drink package, buy it ahead of time. In our case, it was about $50/day if you purchased it ahead of time and about $80/day if you waited to buy it on the boat. POINT OF CLARIFICATION: You CANNOT buy a drink package for just one or two days. It's all or nothing, so the "per day" breakdown is misleading. Which means you'll be spending $250 on a 5 day cruise (and remember that your first day is pretty much a wash anyway) for all you can drink IF you buy it ahead of time and about $400 if you wait to buy it when you board. MORE CLARIFICATION: You CANNOT buy just one drink package if you are rooming with someone (a spouse or otherwise). The other person also has to buy some form of drink package (the soft drink package was around $200 for the week on our cruise). In short, if you plan to buy the ship's alcohol, save up your money and come to terms with how much you'll be spending on it. Otherwise, it'll just make you mad every time you swipe your card, and then there's really no point in doing it in the first place.
BUT, for those adventurers among you, if you want to partake in some adult beverages but don’t want to take out a second mortgage, you can try your hand at bootlegging. Googling the topic will bring up a host of sneaky options, but basically you pour clear liquor into some different bottle (contact solution, rubbing alcohol, etc) and try to pull a fast one on the x-ray security, or you can do what we did and buy plastic Rumrunner flasks, which are invisible on the x-ray machines. For us, it worked like a charm (be sure to push all the air out if you're flying so they don't expand and leak in your checked baggage), but it was a little stressful. ALSO, many cruise lines allow you to carry on a couple of bottles of wine, so be sure to take advantage of that if you can.
But enough about alcohol. If you plan to buy excursions, be sure to buy those ahead of time also. We didn't do any, so I couldn't tell you if they will be cheaper, but I CAN tell you that it's exasperating watching your room charges continue to climb throughout your trip. A "free" show one night charged $2.50 for a bag of popcorn. Yes, you read that right. I had just eaten a "complimentary" New York strip steak at dinner, and then they wanted me to pay $2.50 for a bag of popcorn thirty minutes later. So the more stuff you can buy ahead of time, the more likely you'll be able to swallow those silly little charges as you rack them up. Either way, realize that unless your cruise is truly all-inclusive, some charges most definitely WILL apply, including tipping your waiters and other helpful staff.
Tumblr media
3) Get a room with a view. This is one of those things we sprung for ahead of time, and even though I am cheap, I'm SO glad we paid extra for a balcony. THIS is the primary reason to go on a cruise—falling asleep to the sound of crashing waves (keep your door slightly open at night), waking up to a brilliant sunrise stretching out across thousand miles of sparkling, blue water, and enjoying a glass of smuggled rum (mixed with some orange juice and a pineapple wedge—which were free when we put them in our water bottle during a meal but cost extra otherwise…) as the faint outline of a Haitian island formed on the horizon. It's pretty hard to top that, especially if you're an introvert like me. All of the view. None of the crazies. Also, it helped my wife and me when the boat really got to rocking. We never experienced any seasickness, but there were times when it was nice to see what we were feeling.
4) Exercise. Yes, seriously. The cruise I went on was actually hosted by Beachbody®, the fitness company that my wife works for, so we participated in some fairly insane group workouts every morning (imagine a couple hundred people jumping up and down at the same time across the entire top deck of a ship), but even if it had been a different situation, I would have still exercised ever day. Why? Well, if you haven't noticed how much I've been talking about the copious food and drink stashed away on cruise ships, let me say it again—you will eat and eat until you can't see your toes, and then you will eat some more. And the food is great (we ate in the main dining hall every evening, which didn't cost a dime, even when I ordered two or three appetizers and my wife ordered two or three desserts), but even the best surf 'n turf turns bland when you're putting in twice the amount of calories that you're burning off day after day. So yes, take a minute (or sixty) every day to work up a bit of an appetite. Swim, jog, lift weights, or just use the stairs instead of the elevator when you're exploring your little ship's sixteen floors. The more you get that blood flowing, the better everything will taste, and the better you'll feel when you do lie back and fall asleep in the sun (oh, and remember the sunscreen, especially if you go after a long winter like we did!).
Tumblr media
5) Appreciate wherever you make port. This is another big reason to consider a cruise over a resort (along with getting the room with a view overlooking the vast greatness of the ocean). Watching an island slowly appear and unfold before you as you pull into port is magical. And the chance to experience multiple destinations in one trip is undeniably appealing. But don't squander that chance. When you do reach your ports of call, go explore! A beach is a beach. An ocean is an ocean. Yes, the Bahamian waters are the most beautiful I've ever seen, but it's what I found on land that made the trip really worth it. Walk a while and find the locals. Get away from the tourist traps and enjoy the real Caribbean culture. Take in the sights, sounds, and smells of a different world. As much as I don't like crowds, I LOVE new cultures. Earth is a beautiful place, and humanity is so much more interesting and diverse than your hometown. And if you're lucky enough to make port at a smaller island, you'll enjoy it all the more. Our cruise line (Royal Caribbean) owns Labadee, Haiti, and we were able to kayak around to Labadee's actual fishing village, which is ONLY accessible by small boats. It was an experience I'll never forget.
6) Go again (or don't). Finally one last piece of advice. As I've already mentioned, cruise ships are overwhelming. They're stressful at times when you're inexperienced with their rules and operations. There's so much to see and do that it's hard to fully relax until the cruise is almost over. Ironically, that's why so many people only choose cruises for their vacations—they already put in the work of that first one. After a couple, that first wasted day becomes more enjoyable, and every other day is filled with countless possibilities. Like I said before, it's like being in the middle of NYC… in the middle of a tropical ocean, and you don't have to worry about your wallet getting stolen. I'm still not sure if it's exactly my thing, but it's pretty clear that if I ever do go again, it'll be a more enjoyable experience than the first. And to even suggest that my first time wasn't enjoyable is just silly. It really was magical. Frustrating at times, and not as relaxing as a resort on the whole, but definitely well worth it. Even if I did gain ten pounds in five days. And hopefully my experience will make yours all the more enjoyable. Bon Voyage!

TRANSLATION: Bruno Massot: “I would have never had that in France”
Tumblr media
Original: https://www.lequipe.fr/Patinage-artistique/Article/Bruno-massot-je-n-aurais-jamais-eu-ca-en-france/885594
Crowned Olympic Champion in Pairs with Aliona Savchenko at the Pyeongchang Games, the Norman skater has no  regrets having taken German nationality.
By Sophie Tutkovics
Born in Caen 29 years ago, Bruno Massot competed last month for Germany at the Pyeongchang Olympic Games, where he won the Olympic title in pairs figure skating with his partner of Ukrainian origin Aliona Savchenko. Since then, he has done a series of galas in Switzerland before returning to training in their German base of Oberstdorf to prepare for the World Championships that start Wednesday in Milan. “We will not really be ready, we are very worn out,” he explained, “it’s sort of a bonus competition for us…”  Meanwhile, in this grand hotel in Zurich, he is pleasantly surprised with the continuing interest from the French press.
When you were on the podium in Pyeongchang and the German anthem started playing…
(He cuts me off with a smile) Needless to say, it’s necessary to drop this question!
…What were you thinking?
Frankly, I had the same feelings, the same emotions as if it were the French anthem.  But regardless, French anthem or German anthem, I was incapable of singing because the emotion was to great.  I feel really good in Germany, I am very happy here and I am more than proud to bring them this medal because they gave me a chance. And they still helped me even when we weren’t allowed to skate (in competitions and galas) for a year and a half (waiting for a letter of release from the French Federation).
But what were you thinking on the podium?
I can’t really say what I was thinking in that moment. There were so many emotions.  There must have been a million things that went through my head.  I saw the German flag rising and I was truly happy.  But I think I would have had the same emotion if it was France.  There are still a large number of people who follow me in France, especially in Normandy, in my city of Caen.  I was happy for all those people too and, of course, my family.
Tumblr media
Conversely, did you get a negative reaction from people who did not understand your change of nationality?
Certain people told me that I disowned my country, that I left my homeland.  In my opinion, people act like that first of all because it’s Germany, in relation to the past.  But we must grow, the war is over, we are in 2018, we need to stop the madness!
But you are from a generation that did not know the war…
(He cuts me off) No, but my family suffered from it.  My grandmother had 8 sisters and two of them were killed during D-day (the Normandy landing in 1944).  So I come from a family that talked about that.  And actually for my father, this medal for Germany is very important.  It shows that despite everything that has happened, now we have formed a continent.  There are no more borders.  I know that it’s important for my family and I think it’s great.  But there are always people who are not happy that I left my country.
What is your response?
I try to explain that life in sports is not that simple, that there are a lot of politics around us and that kills us.  I try to explain my history to them so that they understand why I left France.  Even if I don’t like to say that.  I didn’t leave [t/n: abandon] France… There are many things I would like to say, but I’ll leave it there.  I don’t want to get hit later.  I will just say that, when I had to choose between France and Germany, I listened to the offers from the French federation and the German federation and I went with the country that offered me the better living conditions, above all, and the best training conditions.  And by living conditions, I’m also talking about financially because I was living with nothing.  I was living on 200 euros a month during those 18 months where I was stuck.  But the (German) federation paid for my apartment, gave me money to eat too because with 200 euros, I couldn’t do very much.  They paid for my training, my ice time.  I never had that in France. Never.
When you have 200 euros a month, what do you eat?
The benefit is that in Germany things are a little cheaper, so that was already a big plus. But I ate lots of pasta and rice.  I had to pay attention because, as a skater, we cannot eat like that.  We have to watch our weight.  My fiancée also had some savings and my parents helped me.  I can still hear my mother crying on the phone when I asked for money.  Because at 20 years old, I wasn’t able to live on my own.  She was sad to realize that I was living in such bad conditions.  I was staying in a tiny studio apartment. The president of the Oberstdorf skating rink gave me all my furniture because I arrived in Germany with nothing. Just my car.  At one point, I even thought I was going to sleep in my car…
At that moment, you said to yourself : It’s not normal that I am being reduced to this?
I didn’t have very much, but I was not unhappy.  Because of the federation there, because I discovered that it was for the athletes.  I had never known that.  In France - now I’m going to throw something out there - to get something, you have to give something first. They work completely opposite to the French federation.  In Germany, they help us to get the results.  Whereas in France they do the opposite. They help the people who already have the results, it’s not logical.
Then your letter of release did not arrive, month after month, were you discouraged?
Very. Eighteen months in total, it doesn’t seem that long, but when you do the same training routine every day without knowing why, it becomes extremely long… I skated like a lunatic, I worked like crazy to obtain the level I have now, but I never kept asking myself: but why I am doing this? Perhaps I’ll never be free… Perhaps I will never be able to go the Olympics…I will never be able to show everyone what I am capable of… What’s the point? And so, inevitably, the days when training didn’t go as well, each time we discussed with Aliona and we said: what’s the point? Just to go pro, do shows and earn money.
Are you saying that you almost didn’t go to the Olympic Games?
Oh yes, we almost quit. Completely. When an athlete is stuck, lots of things cross their mind. A great deal.
The president of the French federation Didier Gailhaguet, congratulated you for your olympic title?
Yes. Twice. For the medal of course, and also for what I said in the media.  It’s for that reason that I’m not sure if he will congratulate me after this interview… But hey, at some point, I am going to stop lying.  It’s important to talk about these things.  People have to open their eyes.  That’s what I don’t understand: everyone knows Gailhaguet, everyone knows what he is like, but why is he still here? Now I am with Germany, so I am no longer scared of anything anymore [t/n: repercussions].
He demanded money from the German federation for your letter of release…
It was initially 100,000 euros, from what I know, then 70,000€, 50,000€ and finally 30,000.  But the thing is that when I went on October 26, 2015 to get my letter of release, I didn’t know it was in exchange for money.  Me, I thought that he gave me my letter and voila, I was free. But no it was subject to payment, I was not aware.
Did you think about your partner, Aliona Savchenko, becoming French?
It was not just a citizenship problem.  We had to find out if it was possible for her to compete at the Games for three different countries (after Ukraine and Germany). We never got a response and for that reason we chose Germany: we didn’t want to take the risk of skating for France and then two weeks before the games, find out ‘Oh it’s not possible you can go’. Besides that, it would not have been a problem to skating for France if we had the right conditions.  We just needed that.  To start with, Aliona was ready to skate for France. But since we never had a response to our questions, we chose the country that gave us the answers.
It’s the first Olympic title for Germany in figure skating since Katarina Witt, in 1988 (for East Germany), and the first title in pairs in 66 years. You made the newspaper headlines?
We saw many journalists in Pyeongchang and, apparently, it had the effect of a bomb in Germany.  We were on the front page of all the newspapers! Our return to Frankfurt was magical. We had an airplane with Team D written on side, we met the pilots, we took photos with them, it was great! I know that it’s rare nowadays, but it was them who wanted to met us. And after landing, there was a huge crowd out on the tarmac.
They easily adopted you, you the French and Aliona the Ukrainian…
What they are looking for above all is the potential.  What do they want? Results, medals! And voila, they do what they need to get them.  And they do what they do in the right direction, quite simply.  In France, they also accept foreigners.  But they don’t let the French leave… For them in once sense it’s normal but in the other direction, no.
When Aliona, 5 time world champion, chose you, did you not think that the world would think that your results would be thanks to her?
There are plenty of people that still say that. Many congratulate Aliona and pretend I was not there.  But I know what I do and how hard I worked to get there.  And I also hear the people that tell me: “You did exactly what you needed to do, you equaled it.  And you became stronger than her old partner.”
Aliona is 34 years old. At first glance, this is her last season…
For the moment we haven’t talked about that.  We still don’t really know what we’re going to do.  We plan to talk about that right after the World Championships.  Because we also need to think about our health.  I have back problems, she had other problems with her knees and ankles.  So we need to think and see what will be best for us. But, frankly, if Aliona decides to retire, I will retire too.  I don’t think I could find anyone better. And what’s more, Olympic champion, what better result could you have? I have had a long and difficult career.  I’m exhausted physically, but also mentally
A NEW IDEA FOR PAIRS
Since a Frenchman and a Ukrainian can become Olympic champions for Germany, why not propose another type of innovation to the ISU, the very conservative international skating federation? When will there be pairs of two women or two men competing?  Bruno Massot did not evade the question.  “In shows, two French skaters have already done that.  They perform incredible acrobatics and it’s really very impressive.  From there to see it in competition, I don’t know… That would be something completely different for certain, it would have a different artistic effect… But hey anything is possible. I am a person pretty open to everything.  Why not? But it would take time for it to appear in competition and to see it at the Olympics, that would take even more time”.

Figure skating: A demanding balance of strength, precision and endurance
Imagine holding a 100-pound dinner tray overhead with one hand, then turning on a sheet of ice, all the while wearing a pair of Ginsu knives on your feet.
Or envision hurling a 100-pound beer keg high up in the air, spinning it three times, then catching it.
Figure skating is like the decathlon of winter Olympic sports, but packed into less than five minutes. The sport might look pretty in its pageantry of gauzy costumes and lyrical music and smiling skaters, beneath the carefully fabricated facade, muscles are screaming and lungs are exploding.
"Best way to describe it is skating is the complete opposite of how it looks," said world silver medallist Kaetlyn Osmond. "It's not easy. It's not graceful. It's usually painful and tiring. And we just have to put a smile on our face, and get through it. And the more effortless we can make it look, the better."
Consider the fundamentals. Osmond, who has her sights set on the medal podium at the Pyeongchang Olympics, wears a heart monitor while training, and her heart rate soars to almost 200 beats per minute in her four-minute long program.
Figure skating is second only to cross-country skiing in the amount of calories burned in Winter Olympic sports.
Skaters soar four revolutions through the air in less than a second in a quadruple jump, landing with more than seven times their body weight. In a spin, skaters can rotate as fast as five times in a second.
"I was doing a photo shoot recently, and they're like 'Can you do your tricks and twirls?"' scoffed Gabrielle Daleman, bronze medallist at last year's world championships. "I said 'My WHAT? You did not just use that phrase.' No-one really knows what goes on behind the scenes, no-one knows how hard you can fall, and that you literally can bleed. You do sweat, you do cry."
What truly makes skating tough, says Patrick Chan, is it requires a mixed bag of talents: endurance, power, flexibility, balance.
"It's kind of a circus act," said the three-time world champion. "You're trying to run a marathon, but with the explosiveness of a 100-metre dash. It's like running a mile around the track, every straightaway you go for a full-blown sprint, and then on the curves you coast. While maybe trying to juggle. And your big muscles are really working hard and getting fatigued. . . and anyone who's ever felt (lactic acid buildup) knows it's so hard to do very precise adjustments when your muscles are pleading for oxygen."
If the quad jump isn't figure skating's most difficult element, pairs skaters will tell you it's the triple twist lift. The man throws his partner up over his head, where she spins three times while almost horizontal to the ice, before he catches her.
At the world championships in 2011, Meagan Duhamel's elbow caught partner Eric Radford in the face with such force, she broke his nose. They finished the program, his nose a bloody faucet.
"There's nothing natural about it," said Duhamel, who — as opposed to a beer keg — plays a key role in the lift by launching herself up into the air, pushing off Radford's wrists, then throwing a knee up and over into the spin.
"It requires the most precision needed on timing between two people," Radford said.
Duhamel and Radford, who are two-time world pairs champions, believe there's no other sport like it.
"Even in gymnastics, there's no routine that's that long," Radford said. "And in long-distance running, it's one repetitive motion that you're doing over and over again. Doing a long program is a combination of using explosive power, having extreme endurance, and then when you're extremely tired, you have to do very technical elements that require strength and precision and emotion."
Ice dance veteran Tessa Virtue called it "a four-minute sprint. With a smile on your face."
"And don't look tired. Don't you dare," added partner Scott Moir. "I haven't had anything feel like a free dance feels. When you can't lift your arms, there's no saliva in your mouth. Some days I can't get my legs moving. And you have to be your strongest at the finish, because you have to build to the climax, so it's funny, I think when people tune into figure skating for the first time, maybe some of that gets lost, the athleticism, because you do have to end with showmanship."
Virtue and Moir, who will retire after Pyeongchang, said their interest in the science of the sport has grown since they teamed up with a physiologist through B210, which provides training and preparation services to elite athletes.
"He collected so much data last season that we were able to look at our brain waves, our sleep patterns, our heart rates, our breaking, and really understand what sort of a formula for our loading and unloading weeks, and strategizing and setting up a schedule that takes that into account," Virtue said. "I think that will put us at the start line (in South Korea) feeling refreshed and energized, as opposed to exhausted by the end of the season."

Olympic: VIRTUE AND MOIR ON THE OLYMPIC MEDAL TRAIL AGAIN
OLYMPIC ICE DANCING CHAMPIONS AT VANCOUVER 2010 AND DOUBLE SILVER MEDALLISTS AT SOCHI 2014 (ICE DANCE AND TEAM COMPETITION), CANADA’S TESSA VIRTUE AND SCOTT MOIR RECENTLY MADE A SUCCESSFUL RETURN TO THE ICE FOLLOWING A LONG BREAK. UNBEATEN DURING THE 2016/17 SEASON, THEY WON THEIR THIRD WORLD TITLE IN APRIL 2017, AND NOW HOPE TO RETURN TO THE TOP OF THE OLYMPIC PODIUM AT PYEONGCHANG 2018.
Partners since their teens in 1997, Virtue and Moir made a record-breaking start to the Olympic season at Skate Canada in late October 2017, the second event in the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating. Performing to the sound of the Rolling Stones’ Sympathy for the Devil, the Canadian duo scored 82.68 points for their short dance, beating the world record they had set at the World Figure Skating Championships in Helsinki (FIN) earlier in the year. They then posted a new world record total score of 199.89 following their free skate, which they danced to music from Moulin Rouge.
youtube
That second record was eclipsed a week later by their main rivals, Gabriela Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron of France, who broke through the 200-point barrier at the Cup of China in Beijing, scoring 200.43 points in all.
The Canadian and French couples – who will be regarded as the favourites for gold at PyeongChang 2018 – faced off for the first time in the season at the Grand Prix Final in Nagoya (JPN) in December. On that occasion, Papadakis and Cizeron set a new overall world points record of 202.16, finishing ahead of Virtue and Moir in both the short dance and the free dance.
The Canadians’ score of 199.86 points was also hugely impressive, but they will be looking to improve on that in PyeongChang. “We build programmes with points in mind,” says Moir. “We’d love to have a perfect scoresheet at the Olympic Games, but at the same time we always find we skate well when we think about our feeling and our performance, and just being connected to each other.”
THE CALL OF THE ICE
The Canadian pair retired from competition after Sochi 2014, when they were prevented from retaining their Olympic ice dancing title by the USA’s Meryl Davis and Charlie White, the couple they had beaten to gold in Vancouver four years earlier.
youtube
Deciding that they missed the ice too much, they returned to action in the 2016/17 season. Dispensing with the services of their long-time coach, Marina Zueva, whom they shared with Davis and White, they decided to work with Marie-France Debreuil and Patrice Lauzon instead.
“After Sochi, we took time to do everything, step outside the skating world, and have lives – and it was wonderful,” said Virtue. “But there was a certain void that we tried to fill. And then, over time, we just realised we missed the structure of training and waking up with a purpose, and having goals in mind, daily goals, weekly goals, seasonal goals. We missed competing.”
The moment they returned to the ice to train was, in her words, “just pure elation. Pure joy. And truly a renewed sense of passion for skating.”
“We love going into the rink every day,” Moir added. “We came back. We didn’t have to. It was for us. And I think there is power to that. We’re doing this because we love figure skating, because we love ice dancing with each other. It’s a crazy thing to say, but that’s why.”
Tumblr media
A STUNNING COMEBACK
While Papadakis and Cizeron made the most of their absence to win the 2015 and 2016 world titles and dominate the Grand Prix scene, the Canadians, who were born two years apart in London, Ontario, went unbeaten throughout their comeback season.
They opened up with wins at the Autumn Classic and Skate Canada in Montreal (CAN) and the NHK Trophy in Sapporo (JPN), before winning the Grand Prix Final for the first time, in Marseille (FRA) in December 2016.
Another first place followed at the 2017 Four Continents Figure Skating Championships at the Gangneung Ice Arena – the venue for the PyeongChang 2018 competition – before their third world title came their way in Helsinki in April, where they set new world records of 82.43 points in the short and 198.62 overall. Papadakis and Cizeron took silver behind them, thanks in the main to a world record score of 119.15 points in the free dance.
THE HUNGER REMAINS
“We had learned so much from last season, having competed and making that comeback,” said Virtue in late October 2017. “So we were very clear with our team. We sat down, everyone together – our strength and conditioning, our mental prep, our whole team – we sat down and discussed the best way to set us up for the Olympic Games.”
The youngest champions in Olympic ice dancing history, the 30-year-old Moir and 28-year-old Virtue have been winning competitions since the early 2000s, and are showing no signs of losing their hunger for success.
As competitive as ever, they are hoping to become the first ice dancing couple to win five Olympic medals. That objective that looks to be well within their reach at PyeongChang 2018, where their duel with Papadakis and Cizeron promises to be nothing short of spectacular.
