NASCAR at Charlotte recap: Martin Truex Jr. scores emotional win as girlfriend fights cancer

Martin Truex Jr. may have won for a sixth time this season Sunday, but this victory carried added importance as his girlfriend has a chemotherapy treatment on Monday.

It was a scene that had played out five other times this season. There Martin Truex Jr. stood in victory lane Sunday hugging crew chief Cole Pearn and various members of his Furniture Row Racing team. Champaign sprayed and high-fives were exchanged.

This scene, however, had one key person missing the festivities. Sherry Pollex, Truex’s longtime girlfriend, was not at Charlotte Motor Speedway but instead home with her mom and family watching the Bank of America 500 on television.

Pollex is battling ovarian cancer and has a chemotherapy treatment Monday. With the risk that a mere cold could put her in the hospital, she didn’t attend Sunday’s Round 2 playoff race. And her presence was missed, something Truex noted as he became emotional celebrating his Monster Energy Cup Series-best sixth win of the season, this one securing him a spot in the eight-driver semi-final round.

“I was thinking about her because she's not here, and I know she really wanted to be,” Truex said. “I know our guys love having her around when we win, and she's a fun person to celebrate with. So I thought about that.

“I thought about winning this first race of the round, the pressure coming off. Just a lot of things, I guess. I was wore out. I just lost it for a minute. There's a lot going on.”

What she missed was her boyfriend winning yet again and showcasing why he is a favorite to win his first-ever Cup Series championship — and doing so in an uncharacteristic fashion.

On a track where he typically excels, Truex surprisingly struggled in qualifying Friday posting only the 17th-fastest speed. Afterward, he said both he and Pearn were initially frustrated before putting their anger to focus on solutions. Compounding matters, rain washed away two sessions of practice on Saturday leaving the team mystified entering the race whether it had found a remedy as to why it was off the pace.

And the early indications on Sunday weren’t encouraging. Truex finished 13th in Stage 1, the first time he hadn’t scored points in the opening stage since the July 1 race at Daytona International Speedway. By all appearances it was going to be a long afternoon.

Then as if Pearn waved a magic wand, the No. 78 Toyota found its missing oomph. Truex finished fourth in Stage 2, and led 91 of the final 104 laps to take his sixth and least likely victory on the year.

“Sometimes you're off and no matter what you do you can't find the speed,” Truex said. “Today, I thought we had the speed, we just didn't have the balance right. Once we got the balance right, we started picking them off.”

In the immediate, the win brings Truex and Pearn a sense of relief. Thy can go into next weekend’s race at Talladega Superspeedway, the most volatile track in the playoffs, without any concern about where they might finish.

Were FRR to blow an engine like what occurred last year, which knocked Truex out of the postseason far earlier than expected, it would be met with a collective shrug. Regardless of the outcome, they’d still remain championship eligible.

“There's so much out of your control,” Truex said. “To go there and not have to worry about all those things is definitely a good feeling. ... It's going to be pretty awesome going to Talladega and say, ‘Oh, what the hell, let's go race.’”

In the big picture, the win reaffirms what is already presumed: Truex is a virtually lock to be among the four drivers vying for the championship in the title round at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Not just because he’s amassed so many bonus points that he can afford a bad race, maybe even two within a given bracket. But if the worst happens and he finds himself in a must-win to stave off elimination, Pearn constructs such fast cars Truex could still come through in the clutch and still punch his ticket to the next round.

Yet even if a first championship doesn’t materialize, Truex isn’t going to lose his perspective. Seeing everything Pollex has endured has given him a greater appreciation for what he and FRR have accomplished and how special moments like Sunday are.

“We've learned to enjoy these moments a lot more and cherish these moments a lot more than maybe we would have in the past” Truex said. “And I think that goes for honestly our whole team. If you seen us in victory lane, it's like a bunch of little kids, the first time we've ever done anything exciting.

“We definitely don't take them for granted. We enjoy ourselves. We whoop it up and take in everything we can.”
