Posted @withregram • @immycycles #instagram #foto A few years ago I made a decision to stop working out for aesthetics. There were a lot of motivations for doing this which I have talked about before (a need to gain weight to help with injuries the biggie) and it was one of the most mentally challenging things I’ve done. I watched my body, which had previously been this tightly controlled hard little thing i’d spent years carving, become steadily squishier and softer and expand in scary places. I lost a lot of control over stuff I liked to control. And that was terrifying. Over the years I have had numerous wobbles about this decision. It’s difficult looking in the mirror and not recognising a face looking back at you. It took a really long time to be able to look at any picture of me pre-2019 because I’m so conditioned to see that tiny little body as beautiful - while knowing it was so unwell. It’s difficult trusting your body to do it’s own thing. We’ve had to work a lot of stuff out together and get to know each other from scratch. I am far more active than I ever was back then, despite the brutal training regime I put myself under and the strict diet. I have an apple watch and can see all my data, I can see where I struggled and how my limits have expanded as my body has grown. I do more now, lift heavier, move more, but my body hasn’t shrunk back; I don’t have the snatched waist and washboard abs anymore. But I’m slowly getting more comfortable with that. I think my body is much happier now - I don’t see fluctuations in weight or energy like I used to. Today I pedalled up a (tough for me hill) and felt fine. A bit out of breath but I was ok. Half way up I remembered the same route and feeling feeling sick, dizzy and tired at the top. I could push through the discomfort this time and keep going knowing my body could do it without having a complete meltdown. It was a great tiny reminder that training for strength and health has had a much bigger impact on my life than whether I can fit into XS Sweaty Betty leggings. #morewomenonbikes #weightgainjourney #mentalhealthawareness #nevernotcycling #ridebikesbehappy #truewomencyclists #fromwhereiride

Posted @withregram • immycycles #instagram #foto EEEEEK SO HAPPY TO BE RIDING A BIKE. SO HAPPY TO BE OUTSIDE. I have been literally laid up supine in my bed for the past four days trying to recover from a disgusting cold that may or may not have been covid. I have rested the hardest I have ever rested, trying to get through it as quickly as possible but without pushing myself to just get back to normal. I’ve never been so bored in my whole entire life (most of last week was spent sleeping 15 hours a day and dozing for the rest of it), but I am hoping that boredom will score some additional biological brownie points to mean that this is the only cold slash maybe covid I get this year. Anyway, yesterday I started to feel semi human (following a trip to planet doughnut - my reward for doing so well at resting), so today when the sun poked it’s little golden face out I thought I’d go for a pootle. Nothing big, because neither my lung capacity or stamina is up to much yet, but a little something in the sunshine. AND WHAT SUNSHINE. I’d forgotten following this rain-sodden bone-chillingly cold winter we’ve had what it was like to cycle in warmth and sunshine - I realised that I actually enjoy cycling. It isn’t miserable. You don’t automatically lose all feeling in your toes when you get on a bike. You don’t have to have a lie down shower for 20 mins when you get home. You can be happy to ride a bike. WHO KNEW. It was so wonderful going up and down the gravel loop & quiet country back lanes. The smell of fresh cut grass & sweet meadow flowers, birds jabbering away in the hedgerows, blousy white & pink blossoms bobbing in the breeze between bright emerald buds on trees, the tiny pealing bleats of early lambs, it felt like the most perfect spring day ever. It was only about an hour of cycling to the shops, but it could have been an all day adventure somewhere in Europe miles away from civilisation. I’m hoping this is a foreshadow of the year to come - long balmy days of lazy cycling down warm roads and big blue skies.
