Let’s talk about Star Trek and gatekeeping.

As an autistic person, Star Trek is my thing. It’s my obsession, my constant hyper fixation, and I can quote lore, obscure facts, and recite entire episodes. Basically, I’d crush it at Star Trek trivia night.

As a major fan of Trek, I love TOS specifically. Spock is my dude, the rest of the crew are practically my best friends. I’ve watched each episode countless times, and I know the movies by heart. As someone who’s autistic, I find comfort in the familiar and I struggle with change. And boy howdy, there has been a lot of change with the new series. Spock’s character specifically, between JJ Abrams, Discovery, and Strange New Worlds, has undergone several major transformations.

But! The thing about change and Trek is that it’s a constant. There’s the built-in possibility of change at any moment, and in order for any “true” Trek fan to keep their salt they need to remember that mirror verses and multiverses are canon, that IDIC is the name of the game, and yes, fan fiction is the lifeblood of the series. You can’t have one without the other.

Consider this. Star Trek carved out the modern fan fiction genre, and it saved Trek. The series was originally cancelled after two seasons, and was only brought back through the fan base that kept it alive through fan fiction.

If the hundreds of thousands of different interpretations, backstories, characterizations, and alternate universes that fan fiction presents, and if the hundreds of “official” novelizations exist, then new content is par for the course. Any Trek fan has to be willing to accept that lore is fluid. If a fan doesn’t get that, or tries to convince another fan that their opinions are invalid because they are fans of the new content? They’re the one who isn’t a “true” fan, because anyone that can’t accept the possibility of other interpretations and dismisses new content, they are missing the entire premise of the series.

Personally, I love SNW’s take on Spock and Kirk. (That handholding!) I love that Spock gained a sister in Discovery. I love Picard’s storyline. I love the silliness of Lower Decks, and I miss Prodigy.

If certain fans can’t accept new content and try to gate keep your enjoyment? Pull a rebel Spock: throw up the ta’al, transform it into the middle finger, and say you hope they ‘expire soon and fail.’ 🖖🏽

I wanted to do a quick valentines doodle and I lost the plot, this is part one of at least 2.

One, I think I got possessed cause this is not my usual colour palette. Two, I’m very aro, romance repulsed, my only exception for some reason being Narilamb???? And three, I need to be heard out on one sided pining from Narinder.

Next time I do a limited pallet I gotta start with black and white and use a gradient map cause I wanted to change the colours at one point and it was a nightmare. Added like 3 hours onto colouring this.

Law going full nerd over Sanji in his germa suit is the greatest thing today. I bet on the inside he wanted to act like Luffy and Chopper when they saw the suit and wants to try it out, who wouldn’t when a character from their favorite comic comes to life 😂😂
