Intermodal Freight Transport: Enhancing Cargo Mobility
Intermodal freight transport is a dynamic and efficient approach to cargo mobility that combines multiple modes of transportation, such as road, rail, sea, and air, within a single, coordinated supply chain. This concept is transforming the way goods are transported globally, offering numerous advantages in terms of cost-effectiveness, sustainability, and overall cargo mobility.
One of the key benefits of intermodal freight transport is its ability to optimize the use of different transportation modes. By seamlessly shifting between trucks, trains, ships, and planes, cargo can traverse long distances with minimal handling and transfer points. This reduces transit times, lowers transportation costs, and minimizes the risk of damage or loss during transfers.
Intermodal transport also contributes to environmental sustainability. It allows for the use of more energy-efficient and eco-friendly modes of transportation, such as trains and ships, for long-haul segments of the journey. This can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the overall environmental footprint of cargo transportation cargo services in abu dhabi to india
Furthermore, intermodal systems enhance cargo mobility by improving reliability and flexibility. They are less susceptible to congestion and disruptions because they offer alternative routes and modes of transportation in case of unexpected delays or capacity constraints. This resilience is particularly crucial for industries reliant on timely deliveries, such as manufacturing and retail.
In addition, intermodal hubs play a pivotal role in this transportation approach. These strategically located centers serve as interchange points where cargo is efficiently transferred between different modes of transport. They often incorporate advanced technologies, such as tracking systems and automated handling equipment, to streamline operations and enhance cargo mobility.
In summary, intermodal freight transport is a transformative solution that enhances cargo mobility by optimizing transportation modes, improving sustainability, increasing reliability, and leveraging advanced infrastructure. As the global demand for efficient and sustainable cargo transportation continues to grow, intermodal systems are poised to play an increasingly vital role in shaping the future of logistics and supply chains best movers in abu dhabi

Tracking systems that help you protect your Cargo
There are many tracking systems that claim to help you protect your containerized cargo. In this article, we will examine the type of cargo container security tracking system you need at every stage in your containerâs journey - when in-transit, at ports, airports, at container yards, and how you can get integrated visibility and security throughout.
A good tracking of cargo must be able to tell you what is possibly going wrong with the goods in your container at every stage in its supply chain.
So, what are the different stages in a containerâs supply chain?
Let us assume that you are shipping a container from Sao Paulo in Brazil to Abu Dhabi in the UAE.
Your container leaves your factory premises located in the outskirts of Sao Paulo on a trailer-truck and hauled to the nearest port, the Port of Santos. From the Port of Santos, it leaves on a ship and arrives at the Port of Dubai in the UAE. From here, it is either ferried by truck or by rail to Abu Dhabi, its final destination.
Your container underwent two trips on surface, one by sea, and transited through two ports in the process, not including any container storage yards at your origin or the destination.
Therefore, containers are always a complex multi-modal shipment.
The question here is: What are the security aspects that a tracking solution must address across the legs of this journey.
Container Tracking on Surface â First & Last Mile
You need a solution which will not only protect your container, but will also protect your goods!
GPS vehicle tracking systems are often employed in this leg of the journey. Wired vehicle tracking devices are attached to the fleet that haul the container.
The problem with this approach is that:
Most trucks are rented from the market aka âmarket vehicles.â Therefore, you cannot deploy a GPS tracker on a truck unless you own it. Most shippers do not own their fleet.
If you are shipping by rail, chances are that you will hardly have any visibility. Even if your rail service provider tells you where the locomotive is, you may not know if your container is actually travelling with it or it was dis-shunted a station ago.
The items from your container can still be stolen and you would have no idea it happened by tracking the vehicle alone.
Therefore, what you require for cargo container safety is a portable wireless device which can travel with your goods. The device must have good network connectivity even when it is placed inside a thick-walled container, such as a reefer container.
There is more that is required for your container to remain secure during its first or last mile journey on surface.
It is not enough that you know the location of your container, you must also know if the container has been opened or damaged. This is where the right choice of sensors come into play.
Light sensors or circuit breakers can indicate if a container has been opened, while shock sensors can indicate a possible impact which could have caused some damage to your goods.
Damaged containers lying in the middle of nowhere are most susceptible to cargo theft.
Another important piece of the puzzle here is connectivity. Your device must have the ability to connect across multiple telecom towers so you never lose contact with your container ever!
Last, but not the least, you need item-level visibility of your goods within your container, especially if they are of high-value. Not every GPS solution (even with portable GPS trackers) can provide this in a cost effective manner.
Container Tracking at the Port or Airport
With more cargo came bigger ports (and airports). Infrastructure developed and convenience improved. But, this also became a problem in terms of container loss and theft.
Containers often get lost within the premises of a port or an airport. They could get stolen or be simply lost due to the inability for the port authorities to find them among a sea of containers.
Many ports and airports lease large stretches of land around them to stock containers upon arrival, and move them to the exit point only after customs clearance is completed. This process could take anywhere from a few days to a few months, and security is not always watertight in these yards.
Containers could get damaged or goods pilfered.
The Los Angeles port for instance handles 19.3 million TEUs every year[1]. That is a massive 52,000 containers handled per day, almost 1/3rd of the passenger baggage volume that Londonâs Heathrow airport handles in a day[2]!
At such high volumes, even if 0.01% of these containers go missing or cannot be found due the location or rack wrongly recorded, it could mean a loss of 5 whole containers per day.
Assuming each container is worth $250,000, and insurance only covers for 90% of that cost, it translates into a $1.25 million loss for the port daily or an annual loss of $456.25 million.
The customerâs business rhythm gets affected too which will force them to finding alternate shipping routes, sometimes with the freight being costlier.
Solutions like RFID do not work well for port-level monitoring, especially when it comes down to identifying where container is placed and precisely which rack it is on. RFID based solutions also have heavy infrastructure requirements.
The type of solution that will work for cargo container security at a port-level is one which can monitor the precise location of a container (within a few feet) and also identify the rack it is on.
The IoT device which you use for tracking the surface transportation of your container will give you the location, but not height. Further the location will only be accurate if the IoT device is equipped with an active GPS antenna that can connect with satellites even when placed inside a container.
Knowing where your container is with a circle of inaccuracy of even a few meters could mean you are searching for it in a different yard altogether â not solving the problem.
Here is an example of an innovative brownfield port monitoring solution for cargo container security:
You can either rely on a smart port which has such a solution or monitor your container by yourself using the right IoT device with active GPS antennas.
Container Tracking on Sea or Air
When your container is on high-seas or in-flight, it is relatively safer as compared to when it is traveling by surface or is waiting at the port.
No one can steal your container when it is on high-seas, except, maybe pirates!
Does this mean that there are absolutely no risks in this stage of the journey?
No really! The type of risk is different. It involves damage to your goods due to inclement weather, rough handling during the journey or container rain.
Therefore, using an IoT device which has sensors to read temperature, pressure, humidity, and shock, especially for cold chain temperature-controlled or fragile shipments, becomes critical.
If the device is able to connect with the shipâs Wi-Fi, it is of advantage because you can get the sensor data live.
You may still not get a GPS fix easily though (especially if your container has thick walls), which means that getting real-time location on your containerâs status may still be difficult.
Knowing where your container is when your goods condition is affected, and knowing how much time you have to fix the problem before it reaches the port is critical to protecting your goods, therefore location becomes vital.
Collecting data streams from shipping platforms on the vesselâs location and flight tracking platforms can help solve the real-time location puzzle, while the IoT device can transmit sensor data through Wi-Fi (if your vessel allows it).

Cargo Consolidation Strategies for Cost Efficiency
Cargo consolidation strategies play a pivotal role in enhancing cost efficiency within the realm of logistics and supply chain management. These tactics are designed to optimize the transportation and distribution of goods by combining multiple smaller shipments into larger, more economical cargo units. Here, we delve into the importance and key elements of cargo consolidation strategies sea cargo abu dhabi
Efficiency in cargo consolidation begins with the aggregation of smaller shipments destined for similar or nearby locations. This practice significantly reduces transportation costs, as it allows for fuller utilization of cargo space and minimizes the need for multiple trips. By maximizing the capacity of trucks, containers, or vessels, businesses can reduce per-unit shipping costs, leading to substantial savings.
Moreover, cargo consolidation strategies contribute to improved inventory management. Centralizing shipments and reducing the number of touchpoints in the supply chain streamline inventory control and reduce warehousing expenses. This not only lowers operational costs but also enhances supply chain agility and responsiveness.
Incorporating technology and data analytics is another crucial aspect of cargo consolidation. Advanced software and algorithms help identify opportunities for consolidation, optimizing routes and schedules to minimize transportation expenses. Real-time tracking and monitoring systems enable businesses to adjust plans as needed, ensuring timely and cost-effective delivery.
Collaboration and partnerships within the industry are key components of successful cargo consolidation. Companies can work together to pool their resources and shipments, creating economies of scale that benefit all parties involved. Additionally, third-party logistics providers (3PLs) specialize in cargo consolidation services, offering expertise and infrastructure to maximize cost efficiency.
Ultimately, cargo consolidation strategies not only reduce shipping costs but also contribute to sustainability efforts by minimizing carbon emissions through fewer transportation journeys. In today's competitive global marketplace, these strategies are indispensable for businesses looking to maintain a competitive edge while simultaneously reducing their environmental footprint  cargo services abu dhabi

'Fast and Furious': The Best and Worst Car Chases in the Franchise
The Fate of the Furious made a massive TK million at the box office this weekend. But how does director F. Gary Grayâs car-careening action stack up to previous sequences in the series? Here are our picks for the 10 best â and four worst â set-pieces that have appeared in the series to date.
[Ed. Note: This ranking was previously compiled in 2015; it has been updated to include Furious 7 and The Fate of the Furious]
THE BEST
The truck heist in âThe Fast and the Furiousâ (Image: Universal)
The Truck Hijack As Seen In: The Fast and the FuriousÂ
The Set-Up: Dom and his crew stage a daylight truck hijacking that undercover cop Brian canât resist getting mixed up in.
Best Moment: Brian leaps from his speeding car to the side of the speeding truck to rescue a trapped Vince.
Fun Fact: Director Rob Cohen approached the sequence, which almost costs Dom and his crew their lives, as a kind of Buddhist rite. âThis is karma,â he remarks on the DVD commentary track. âI am a student of Buddhism and believe this is the truth of life. There is a debt to be paid for oneâs actions and this is the debt for these anti-heroes in the picture.â
youtube
Sean makes a mess in âTokyo Driftâ (Images: Universal)
Seanâs Drag Race As Seen In: The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift
The Backstory: Facing down a jock at his Arizona high school, gearhead Sean agrees to race through a construction site for the ultimate prize: the bullyâs hot girlfriend.
Best Moment: Sean pilots his muscle car through the façade of a house and leaps out the other side.
Fun Fact: The sequence was shot on an actual construction site owned by the Victorville, CA-based Frontier Homes, whose owner was a big Fast and Furious fan. But construction didnât stop while the cameras were rolling. âThey were literally on the other street building the houses,â director Justin Lin says on the DVD commentary track.
Tight turns in âTokyo Driftâ (Image: Universal)
Downtown Drift As Seen In: The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift
The Backstory: After Han is confronted by his business partner about the fact that heâs skimming off the top of their profits, he hops in his car to escape, but ends up meeting his maker.
Best Moment: The crowd of pedestrians in Shibuya parting as the cars drift by.
Fun Fact: Because they werenât allowed to shoot the majority of the chase on Tokyoâs streets, Lin and his crew had to recreate the city on several blocks of L.A.âs famed Wilshire Boulevard. As he remarks on the DVD commentary track: âIt was tough getting all the businesses to let us put up signs and redesign everything, and we had it for a couple weeks. But it all felt seamless. There was always compliments when we showed the movie to people who lived in Tokyo, and they couldnât tell what was L.A. and what was Tokyo.â
youtube
Truck meets train in âFast Fiveâ (Image: Universal)
The Train Heist As Seen In: Fast Five
The Backstory: Joining their old comrade Vince in Rio de Janiero, Brian and Mia agree to aid him in a train robbery. Dom shows up just in time to discover that theyâre being used as pawns in a scheme orchestrated by a drug kingpin Hernan Reyes.
Best Moment: A truck rams into a train car and catches on fire as Brian dangles from the side.
Fun Fact: This entire sequence is one of the costliest in the franchiseâs history, starting off at a base price of $25 million and rising from there. âWhat you have to do is you have to basically buy out a live track,â Lin reveals on the DVD commentary track. âThen we had to go and buy our own train because we had to wreck it.â
The careening safe in âFast Fiveâ (Image: Universal)
The Safe Chase As Seen In: Fast Five
The Backstory: Eager to appropriate Reyesâ ill-gotten funds for their own pay day, the Fast crew busts into a police station and makes off with a cash-stuffed safe, dragging it through the streets of Rio.
Best Moment: Dom pulls the safe forward while Brian pushes it in reverse before doing a 180 and driving alongside his partner.
Fun Fact: The young boy who is briefly glimpsed watching the cars speed by from a bus is Linâs then-2-year-old son. He wasnât the most natural of performers, though. âWeâd have the stunt guys tow the vault and he wouldnât look at it! We were finally able to get his attention on take 3 and he did it perfectly.â
Dom saves Letty in âFast & Furious 6â (Image: Universal)
The Tank Battle As Seen In: Fast & Furious 6
The Backstory: Domâs crew clashes with terrorist Owen Shaw on a highway in Spain, with Shaw piloting a full-sized tank.
Best Moment: Dom leaps through the air â and across a plunging gap â to rescue Letty.
Fun Fact: According to Linâs DVD commentary track, this sixth installment was going to be a two-part extravaganza with the first installment entitled The Fast and the second The Furious. In that version, the highway chase would have been the final scene of The Fast, sending the audience out on a high note while they waited to return a couple months later to see The Furious.
youtube
Dom crashes a plane in âFast & Furious 6â (Image: Universal)
The Runway Chase As Seen In: Fast & Furious 6
The Backstory: Shaw is in the midst of fleeing the country armed with a computer chip when Dom shows up and puts a stop to his airborne escape plan.
Best Moment: Dom drives his car through the nose of a burning plane.
Fun Fact: On the commentary track, Lin says that he originally had the idea for this sequence after Fast & Furious, and it took him four years to bring it to life. At one point, it was going to be the big climax to Fast Five, but the director decided he didnât have the resources until the next chapter.
Flying cars in âFurious 7â (Image: Universal)
The Parachuting Cars As Seen In: Furious 7
The Backstory: Tasked with rescuing kidnapped hacktivist Ramsey (Nathalie Emmanuel), Dom airmails his team to the winding mountain roads of Azerbaijan.
Best Moment: Tej forcibly ejects a terrified Roman out of the cargo bay by deploying his âchute ahead of schedule.
Fun Fact: The crew worked closely with the U.S. Air Force to make this wild stunt a reality, filming it over an eight-day period along a section of Coloradoâs picturesque Pikes Peak Highway. âWe wanted to drop the cars from 12,000 feet and open the chutes at 2,500-3,000. The Air Force wanted us to drop them from 18,000 feet and open at 12,000,â second unit stunt coordinator Andy Gill told Popular Mechanics in 2015.

Domâs Tower Jump As Seen In: Furious 7
The Backstory: Having secured the all-important Godâs Eye device, Dom improvises a bold escape plan: leaping between not just one, but two skyscrapers in Abu Dhabi.
Best Moment: The âDamn the torpedoes, full speed ahead,â look on Domâs face when he realizes the brakes are non-existent heâs got to make a second leap.
Fun Fact: Sorry to burst your bubble, but that vehicle isnât really hundreds of stories up in the air. Instead, the stunt team shot the car through windows that were rigged above an ordinary parking lot, where a heavily padded crash pad waited below. âWeâd get the exit from one side, and then the entrance on another side,â explains Gill in this behind-the-scenes video. âWe did it multiple times for the different buildings it was supposed to go into.â
Zombie cars in âThe Fate of the Furiousâ (Image: Universal)The Smartcar Swarm As Seen In: The Fate of the Furious
The Backstory: The mysterious Cipher (Charlize Theron) creates her own convoy by hijacking the âsmartcarâ computer systems, rendering actual human drivers unnecessary.
Best Moment: Itâs already been teased in the trailer, but the sight of driverless cars swarming the streets of Manhattan under the command of Furiosa herself is enough to make you want to trade in your car keys for a bike helmet.
Fun Fact: Hereâs one more way that The Fast and the Furious franchise is taking its cues from superhero cinema: the bulk of the Manhattan sequence was actually shot in Clevelandâthe same city where The Avengers fought the âBattle of New Yorkâ at the end of that 2012 blockbuster.
THE WORST
Bridge-jumping in â2 Fast 2 Furiousâ (Image: Universal)
Brianâs Race
As Seen In: 2 Fast 2 Furious
The Backstory: Having fled L.A. for Miami, cop-turned-fugitive Brian makes his living by racing against drivers with names like Orange Julius and Slap Jack.
Why Itâs Lame: Director John Singleton relies too heavily on greenscreen and non-practical effects to create the illusion of speed. Instead, it all kind of looks like the characters and cars are sitting still on a soundstage.
An underwhelming game of chicken in â2 Fast 2 Furiousâ (Image: Universal)
The Relay Race As Seen In: 2 Fast 2 Furious
The Backstory: Roman and Brian challenge a pair of muscle drivers to a race in order to pick up additional cars that will come in handy in the climax.
Why Itâs Lame: Singleton remarks on the DVD commentary track that he was inspired by video games like Gran Turismo and you can tell, because the use of CGI throughout this sequence is distractingly obvious.
Lost in a tunnel in âFast & Furiousâ (Image: Universal)
The Tunnel Chase As Seen In: Fast & Furious
The Backstory: Dom and Brian pursue drug lord Braga and his henchmen through an underground tunnel that crosses the Mexico-U.S. border.
Why Itâs Lame: A dark tunnel is just a really boring place to stage a car chase, especially compared to the exotic backdrops glimpsed in the other movies. It doesnât help that the driving action is as repetitive as the underground scenery. Â
Letty means business in âFurious 7â (Image: Universal)
Race Wars As Seen In: Furious 7
The Backstory: With her memory freshly restored, Letty gets back in the driverâs seat to compete in the desert drag race that she and Dom invented.
Why Itâs Lame: James Wanâs visual imagination is perhaps best suited to improbable stunts like dropping cars out of planes or sending them careening between skyscrapers. Tasked with choreographing a straight-ahead road race, he creates a sequence thatâs disappointingly free of excitement or tension. The random, widely-panned Iggy Azalea cameo doesnât help.

Air Travelers Canât See All of It, but More Tech Is Moving Them Along
Airports, often hemmed in by neighborhoods, highways or water, already struggle to keep up with the rising number of air travelers. And the number is expected to keep going up â to more than seven billion globally by 2035, an airline trade association says, nearly doubling from 2016.So while airports are expanding their physical facilities where they can, governments and the travel industry are leaning more heavily on technology, especially artificial intelligence, to process more air travelers more quickly. The airports in Osaka, Japan, and Abu Dhabi have tested autonomous check-in kiosks that move themselves to help manage peaks of passenger flow.Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and Miami International Airport are among those using visual sensors to monitor passenger line lengths and how quickly people are moving through security checkpoints. Managers can use the information to adjust where they need more workers and to send passengers to shorter lines. Passengers can see how long their wait will be on signs or on a phone app. The goal is to help reduce travelersâ worries about whether they are going to make their flight. For international flights, more airlines are installing what are known as self-boarding gates that use a photo station to take and compare a photo of the traveler with the picture in the personâs passport and other photos in Customs and Border Protection files. The gates, which are using facial recognition technology, replace agents who check boarding passes and identification cards.Seven percent of airlines have installed some self-boarding gates, and about a third of all airlines plan to use some type of this gate by the end of 2022, according to SITA, a technology company serving about 450 airports and airlines. Sherry Stein, head of technology strategy for SITA, said the goals are to reduce hassle for passengers, speed boarding and increase security.Still, there are privacy concerns over the use of the photos. The general public doesnât receive much information about how the photos will be used or stored, said Oren Etzioni, the chief executive of the Allen Institute for AI in Seattle.âSo even though we consciously give up our privacy, we still worry that these kinds of digital records can be used against us in unanticipated ways by the government, our employer, or criminals,â he said. A photo taken at the airport leaves another digital footprint that makes us more traceable, he added. The Department of Homeland Security said it did not retain photos of U.S. citizens once their identities were confirmed at airports.Technology similar to that used in self-boarding gates is being deployed for some foreign passengers arriving in the United States. Miami International Airport, for example, began using facial recognition screening at its facility for international passenger arrivals in 2018 and reported that it can screen as many as 10 passengers per minute using the technology. Travelers who have been to the United States previously step up to facial recognition stations, and a customs official checks their passports to make sure they are valid. First-time visitors still need to present a passport or visa and agree to have their fingerprints and photos taken. Some of the new technology is aimed at easing language difficulties. Kennedy International Airport in New York recently installed three A.I.-based real-time translation devices from Google at information stations around the airport. Travelers choose their language from a counter-mounted screen and ask their questions aloud to the device. The device repeats the question in English to the person at the station. That person responds in English, and the device translates that aloud to the travelers.Artificial intelligence is also being used behind the scenes to reduce the time airplanes spend at the gate between flights, which can mean shorter waiting time for passengers who have boarded and buckled up. London-Gatwick, QuĂ©bec City and Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky airports are among about 30 around the world testing or installing a visual A.I. system made by the Swiss company Assaia. The system uses cameras pointed at a plane parked at the gate to track everything that happens after the aircraft lands: how long it takes for fuel and catering trucks to arrive, whether the cargo door is open, and even if employees on the ground are wearing their safety vests. While humans can do each of these tasks, monitoring and analyzing the operations of these various functions can speed the turnaround of the plane and prevent accidents, according to Assaia. After the same plane has, for instance, been filmed doing hundreds of turnarounds at a particular airport, the A.I. system can identify the elements or situations that most often cause delays, and managers can take corrective action. Accidents like ground crew injuries or service vehicle collisions can also be analyzed for their causes. The time an airplane spends waiting for a gate after landing or waiting in line to take off could also be reduced. A group at SITA focused on airport management systems is helping to design technology that can synthesize data from many sources, including changing aircraft arrival times, weather conditions at destination airports and logistical issues to improve runway schedules and gate assignments.Artificial intelligence software can also make a difference with rebooking algorithms, Mr. Etzioni said. When weather or mechanical issues disrupt travel, the airlinesâ speed in recomputing, rerouting and rescheduling matters, he said. The data streams get even more complex when the whole airport is considered, Ms. Stein of SITA said. A number of airports are creating a âdigital twinâ of their operations â using central locations with banks of screens that show the systems, people and objects at the airport, including airplane locations and gate activity, line lengths at security checkpoints, and the heating, cooling and electrical systems â monitored by employees who can send help when needed. These digital systems can also be used to help with emergency planning. The same types of sensors that can be used to supply data to digital twins are also being used to reduce equipment breakdowns. Karen Panetta, the dean of graduate engineering at Tufts University and a fellow at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, said hand-held thermal imagers used before takeoff and after landing can alert maintenance crews if an area inside the airplaneâs engine or electrical system is hotter than normal, a sign something may be amiss. The alert would help the crew schedule maintenance right away, rather than be forced to take the aircraft out of service at an unexpected time and inconvenience passengers. At the moment, people, rather than technology, evaluate most of the data collected, Dr. Panetta said. But eventually, with enough data accumulated and shared, more A.I. systems could be built and trained to analyze the data and recommend actions faster and more cost effectively, she said.Air travel isnât the only segment of the transportation industry to begin using artificial intelligence and machine learning systems to reduce equipment failure. In the maritime industry, a Seattle company, ioCurrents, digitally monitors shipping vessel engines, generators, gauges, winches and a variety of other mechanical systems onboard. Their data is transmitted in real time to a cloud-based A.I. analytics platform, which flags potential mechanical issues for workers on the ship and on land.A.I. systems like these and others will continue to grow in importance as passenger volume increases, Ms. Stein said. âAirports can only scale so much, build so much and hire so many people.â Read the full article
