Lake Titicaca: Discovering Peru and Bolivia’s Sacred Highlands
Tumblr media
Straddling the border of Peru and Bolivia, Lake Titicaca is more than just the world’s highest navigable lake—it’s a cultural and natural wonder steeped in legend and history. At an elevation of over 3,800 meters (12,500 feet), it offers travelers a blend of breathtaking scenery, vibrant local traditions, and ancient mysteries.
The Sacred Heart of the Andes
Lake Titicaca is revered as the birthplace of the Inca civilization. According to Inca mythology, the Sun God sent his children, Manco Cápac and Mama Ocllo, from the lake’s depths to establish Cusco, the heart of the empire. This mystical connection still resonates in the local communities that live along the lake’s shores.
Peruvian Side: Puno and the Uros Floating Islands
Puno, a lively town on the Peruvian side of the lake, serves as a gateway to many of Lake Titicaca’s attractions.
The Uros Floating Islands A visit to the Uros is like stepping into another world. These man-made islands are constructed entirely from totora reeds, which are also used to build the locals' homes and boats. The Uros people, who have lived here for centuries, warmly welcome visitors to experience their unique lifestyle.
Taquile Island Known for its stunning views and rich cultural heritage, Taquile Island is a UNESCO-recognized community where traditional weaving techniques are passed down through generations. Visitors can explore the island, enjoy local meals, and purchase intricate textiles as souvenirs.
Bolivian Side: Copacabana and Isla del Sol
Crossing into Bolivia, the town of Copacabana offers a tranquil starting point for exploration.
Copacabana Town Famous for its Basilica of Our Lady of Copacabana, the town blends natural beauty with spiritual significance. The Virgin of Copacabana is a revered figure, drawing pilgrims from across the Andes.
Isla del Sol (Island of the Sun) This island is a treasure trove of Inca ruins, scenic hiking trails, and traditional Aymara villages. Many believe it to be the birthplace of the Sun God. Highlights include the Pilko Kaina Palace and breathtaking views of the lake from its highest points.
Natural Beauty and Outdoor Adventures
Lake Titicaca’s surroundings are a haven for nature lovers and adventure seekers.
Kayaking and Boating Explore the lake’s vastness by kayak or traditional reed boats. The calm waters and panoramic views make for a serene experience.
Hiking Trails Many trails around the lake offer incredible views and insights into local flora and fauna. Don’t miss the hikes on Isla del Sol and Taquile Island.
Local Cuisine and Culture
The highlands around Lake Titicaca are a culinary delight. Try trucha (trout), freshly caught from the lake, alongside chuño (freeze-dried potatoes) and quinoa-based dishes. Engage with the local Quechua and Aymara communities, who share their traditions, music, and dances with visitors.
Practical Travel Tips
Acclimatize to the Altitude At such high elevations, it’s essential to adjust slowly to avoid altitude sickness. Stay hydrated and take breaks during activities.
Best Time to Visit From May to October, the dry season offers clear skies and ideal conditions for exploring.
How to Get There
In Peru, reach Puno via bus or train from Cusco or Arequipa.
In Bolivia, Copacabana is accessible from La Paz by road.
Travel Planning Assistance
Exploring the vastness of Lake Titicaca can be overwhelming, but reputable travel agencies like Roomchai Limited can tailor itineraries, arrange guided tours, and ensure a seamless journey across both countries.
Conclusion
Lake Titicaca isn’t just a destination—it’s an experience. From its spiritual significance to its awe-inspiring landscapes and rich cultural heritage, this sacred lake offers a journey into the heart of the Andes. Whether marveling at the floating islands or hiking the trails of Isla del Sol, you’ll leave with memories as vast as the lake itself.

Day 37 - to Rio Truchillas, Truchas, León
A couple of years ago I was in Montanas Vacias, The Empty Mountains, to the west of Teruel. It is a tremendous area to visit as a cycle tourist, quite spectacular scenery, but there is often big distances between services. The area has become pretty much deserted of people, the young have moved away, the older people who work on the land eventually die, and no one is left to look after the animals, or the crop.
If anything, this area is more affected by that. The road next to where I’m parked isn’t a small mountain road by any means, but in two days, less than 5 vehicles have been past.
I promised some words on the film I saw on Sunday, that was set in rural Galicia, close to here, and that is a theme of the film, Am Bestas, of The Beasts.
It concerns an older French couple, the guy a retired teacher, who move to renovate an empty farm. They reckon without the few remaining locals, for whom life is not easy. The established farmers, there are only 7 people left in the community, are very keen to sell their land for wind turbines. The incoming French are against it, and the vote needs to be unanimous. Relations between them are tense, and just get worse.
Tourism has been tried in the area, and though the French are keen to relaunch something, it has not been successful. The area is too remote.
Of course I recommend the film, especially having had the chance to watch it while I’m here. It is described as a thriller by some publicity, but though dark, and occasionally suspenseful, it is much more of a drama.
This morning I finished the new Myers novel, which was very good, more on that soon. It was another fine day, and I decided to head up the valley opposite where I am parked up, to Lago Truchillas.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is a protected area, and a special landscape, as it has a glacial origin, with the lake at its head. The steep walls are from glacial cirque and the vast rocks in the valley are its moraine. The depth of the lake has yet to be exactly established, because the equipment used has had no success. The flora and fauna is extremely rare, and consequently so is the animal and bird life; three types of eagle are resident, the Golden, the short-toed snake eagle, and Bonelli’s eagle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was a twelve kilometre ‘ida y vuelta’, or ‘out and back’ track that just gets steadily more captivating. And, no problem that you return the same way, as there’s plenty to stare at in the opposite direction too. The trail gains 580 metres, but only after an hour’s approach, and never steeply. My various niggles handled it well.
Tumblr media
Though back mid-afternoon, I had my monthly accountancy work to do, but it was a warm afternoon, so it was outdoors, and the dog was more than happy to doze with an eye on the hills.

Best Peruvian food
Tumblr media
Meals:
Ceviche - a meal made of fresh fish/sea food, there’s many types of ceviches all around South America and it’s one of the best food I tried there. I really recommend eating ceviche for lunch at local markets, but it’s also a common starter in restaurants
Lomo saltado - a meal made of beef (or pork), rice, some vegetables like tomatoes and pepper and some herbs
Cuy - guinea pig, a traditional dish from the andes, I personally did not want to try it but if you like meat it’s a good traditional food to try
Alpaca - another traditional meal I did not try is the alpaca. A lot of restaurants propose this meal in Cusco. (Whatever you think about eating alpacas, please know that this is a traditional meal for a lot of communities in the Andes and that it helped them survive during generations because it’s a type of food easily available for them, so please don’t judge these communities, you are not better than them because you wouldn’t eat this “cute animal”)
Pollada - a traditional meal made with chicken accompanied by stuff such as potatoes, rice, vegetables... In Peru it’s very popular to have a pollada to raise some money (basically people pay you to eat the pollada so that you can earn money). I ate one in the slums I was volunteering in so that a mother could buy orthopedic shoes for her disabled son
Papa a la huancahina - sliced potatoes drown in a delicious sauce, it’s one of my favorite meals from Peru :)
Anticucho - stew meat that you can eat on the street or at restaurants, it’s quite cheap and can be eaten with a lot of different spices/sauces
Corn soup and quinua soup - a popular dish from the andes. People make soup with produce from their fields, such as corn, quinua, potatoes... If you do a homestay, for example at Lake Titicaca, you will eat of lot of these :)
Trucha (del lago) - at Lake Titicaca, you will also have the opportunity to try some fresh trout from the Lake
Arroz chaufa - fried rice, a meal that mixes traditional Peruvian and Chinese food and was created by Chinese immigrants in Peru
Aji de Gallina - a chicken dish with a spicy yellow sauce
Tumblr media
Street food:
Choclo con queso - I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had this for lunch. It’s pretty cheap, you can find it anywhere, it’s actually quite good and it’s the perfect backpacker lunch for when you don’t want to go to a restaurant
Leche de tigre - this dish is almost like ceviche, it’s basically a seafood soup, made with sea food, lemon juice, onion...
Pan con queso, pan con huevo, pan con palta - this is the perfect breakfast for when your hostel doesn’t have one. You can find this anywhere (which includes any bus station, good to know when you’re going on a day trip and want to buy some breakfast) and it’s super cheap, generally 1 sol
Picarones - fried sweet potatoes donuts, they’re delicious :)
Papa rellena - potato filled with beef and various ingredients such as onions, tomatoes, olives, garlic...
Queso helado - a traditional ice-cream with cinnamon on top, from the region of Arequipa, I tried it for dessert for my birthday and it was really good  :)
Tumblr media
Drinks:
Chicha morada -  a very popular drink made with pineapple and purple corn. It is actually quite easy to make, almost like tea :)
Inka cola - basically Peru’s Coca-Cola, it is very sweet and almost tastes like medecine but if you like sugar and sodas then you should definitely give it a try if you come to Peru !
Coca tea - you’ll definitely have it if you plan on hiking the many Peruvian mountains. It’s perfect to avoid altitude sickness and to give you a good boost in the morning or after your hike
Muña tea - another traditional tea from the andes, I personally did not really like it but it’s good for your health and very natural. You can have it for breakfast in most hostels and homestays
Tumblr media
Fruits:
On the local markets you will be able to find a lot of fruits and vegetables known in Europe and North America for a very low price such as: bananas, tomatoes, cucumber, pineapple, blueberries, strawberries, mangoes... Avocado is a little bit more expensive but still really cheap compared to Europe. It’s quite easy to stay healthy and to be a vegetarian here in Peru :)
But I also found a lot of exotic fruits I didn’t know existed, a few examples:
Granadilla - an orange fruit of which you eat the seeds, it’s a bit like passion fruit
Mamey - it’s a bigger fruit that you can share between a few people, I really liked it :)
I love Peru and its food so I wanted to share it with you guys :) Peruvian food is really diverse, there’s different cuisines depending on the regions and also a strong influence of foreigners who opened restaurants in Peru. If you come to Peru, try as much food as you can, you won’t regret it! I’m not Peruvian so I hope I didn’t make any mistake (I did my research^^) but if I did please tell me so I can correct it! And if there’s some good Peruvian dishes I did not talk about, feel free to add them in the comments :)

The absolute coolest outfits 💗 Taquile Island in Lake Titicaca is so beautiful and peaceful. The restaurant (with no name) has awesome trucha (trout) and they will even show you how they make shampoo and all-purpose cleaner from the local plants. In an Island only 5.72km² you can hike up to the highest point, reaching 4,050m above sea level! 🇵🇪 . . . #lake #titicaca #travelvagabonds #travelling #kids #landscape #travel (at Isla Taquile, Lago Titicaca, Perú) https://www.instagram.com/p/CW0vJVGqOfB/?utm_medium=tumblr

Day 36 - to Rio Truchillas, Truchas, León
There was a Guardia Civil car browsing around yesterday. They looked so bored that I had a chat with them. They said that overnight sleeping was not allowed only in the parking areas marked with signs, here in the Sanabria National Park. For example, they said, it is quite possible to stay just outside the parking area, on the street in effect. I have come across this in the south of Portugal also, and generally, the residents don’t like it. It’s not a good idea to annoy the residents, as was confirmed to me later that evening when I watched an excellent new drama film, set in rural Galicia, Am Bestas, or The Beasts. More about that later.
Parking at the monastery was fine. Higher up at the car park I headed to this morning, at 1650 metres, the overnight temperature dropped to well below zero.
This morning the weather was pretty much perfect, clear skies, no wind, and warming up all the time, to a maximum of about 18C in early afternoon.
There were only 3 other cars there all day. I had planned a hike between three of the little lagoons up there, made even more picturesque than usual by the odd it of snow still clinging on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the above photo the sun reflects off the ice still melting on the lake, it was a cold night up here.
My objective was a small hiker’s refuge up at just over 1900 metres.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m having a really good reading streak at the moment, so before and after, sat in the afternoon sun, I continued Benjamin Myers’s new novel, Cuddy. More about that later also..
That was it for Sanabria, I drove back to El Puente to stock up at the supermarket and with fuel, and considered for a while, staying there. It has huge wide streets to enable it to hold its weekly market, to which people come from a long way around.
But, too many people, too much noise, too much dog poo.
I drove on towards the pass of Alto del Peñón, the boundary between the provinces of Zamora and León, at 1640 metres. I had thought of staying here also, there was absolutely no traffic on the road, which was dire need to repair. Driving on it was 20 miles per hour maximum, with plenty of pothole weaving.
It was quite exposed though, and would be -8C maybe lower later in the night.
Tumblr media
So I headed down to the Rio Truchillas bridge, where there is a popular tourist trail, and a picnic area, though I have seen no one at all since setting out from El Puente.
