At the press conference, guests were invited into an elegant tropical rainforest to explore a world where nature meets the art and science of Jaquet Droz. Under the cover of tropical plants, it is with great emotion that invitees discovered the fascinating animations of this automaton timepiece coming to live, in addition to other recent novelties from Jaquet Droz. The unique new edition of the Tropical Bird Repeater shows the peacock displaying in the foreground of a lush rainforest tableau. A jaguar lounges behind the peacock, while an animated hummingbird flits at the foot of a flowing waterfall –also animated– in the background. Jaquet Droz watches have always held high standard both in their intricate mechanical workmanship and sophisticated design. The ingenious French founder of the company, Pierre Jaquet-Droz, began attracting the attention of the world with his production of extraordinary grandfather clocks, complete with music and automata, in 1738. Partnering with his son, Henry Louis Jaquet-Droz, and neighbor, Jean-Frédéric Leschot, he created exceptional timepieces and automata which, by the mid-1770s, were renowned throughout the royal courts of the civilized world for their unsurpassed revolutionary innovation and elaborate aesthetics. With the popularity of his masterpieces escalating, Jaquet Droz opened a second workshop in London's newly developing commercial district. Soon his company was represented in China, India and Japan as well. The Jaquet-Drozs and Leschot then moved to Geneva, opening the city's first watchmaking manufacture. When the minute repeater function is activated, there are seven animated elements on the dial which spring to life: The waterfall in the background appears to flow. The hummingbird occupying the centre of the dial moves towards the shrub of bright orange birds of paradise near 9 o'clock and beats its wings up to 40 times per second. The peacock at 5 o'clock opens and closes its tail feathers. The toucan near 3 o'clock emerges from the palm leaves and can open and close its beak. 04 DECEMBER 2017 EUROPEAN LAUNCH OF THE TROPICAL BIRD REPEATER IN GENEVA.... The Tropical Bird Repeater, a new creation in the Jaquet Droz Automata Collection, was revealed for the first time in Europe on November 30 during a press day for Swiss and international media outlets, followed by a soirée for Jaquet Droz customers with a passion for fine watchmaking. In 1784, Henri-Louis Jaquet Droz chose Geneva, now an emblematic city in the history of the brand, for the city’s artistic and literary life. In this fertile creative scene, he and Jean-Frédéric Leschot founded the first Genevese watchmaking establishment, with a workshop devoted to a highly complex form of the art from the very beginning. They quickly forged bonds with their adopted city, which awarded them an honorary citizenship. Meanwhile, Henri-Louis became heavily involved in the Société des Arts and technical training. Two centuries later, the twin stars brand welcomed watchmaking connoisseurs and aficionados to the Grand Hotel Kempinski Geneva for the Tropical Bird Repeater’s European debut.
