everyone making a college au (especially a wrightworth college au) should go watch the anime train case. I feel like knowing tristan turnbull exists and adding him in would be really really funny. in context of a wrightworth au he could be the guy trying to steal edgeworth from phoenix and failing miserably it would be great

Hey, I just joined the fandom recently so I missed the last rare pair week, but I found out about your account from the NrMt creators server! Wanted to reach out because I recently added a rare pair to the AO3 relationship tags (HOW FUN!!) and thought whoever follows your account might be interested.
Tristan Turnbull from the anime only had one fic about him in AO3, which is insane given how obsessed he is with Miles. So I started a fic about him meeting Pierce Nichody in prison and becoming lovers. There are going to be other villain pairings that crop up in the background and lots of tension with Miles and Phoenix against Tristan.

Just wanted to share, thanks!
Omg, thank you so much for this link!! And congratulations for inventing a new ship, definitely very cool!! Link right here in case Tumblr is being weird(tm):

Atlanta Hawks Land Delon Wright in Three-Team Deal with Boston Celtics and Sacramento Kings
Tumblr media
On August 7th, 2021, as part of a three-team trade, the Sacramento Kings traded guard Delon Wright to the Atlanta Hawks; the Hawks traded guard Kris Dunn, center Bruno Fernando and a 2023 second round draft pick (Julian Phillips) to the Boston Celtics; and the Celtics traded center-forward Tristan Thompson to the Kings. Boston also received a trade exception.
After nine years and a championship with the Cleveland Cavaliers franchise, former lottery pick Tristan Thompson hit free agency. He joined the Boston Celtics on a two-year, $19 million deal for the full midlevel exception.
After losing Gordon Hayward in free agency, there were questions about how Boston would look after a Conference Finals appearance in the NBA Bubble in 2020.
All of this happened in an abbreviated period where the NBA season ended in the Bubble in August. Free agency and the draft happened in November and a truncated 72-game season started in late December.
Boston got off to a solid 8-3 start during the 2020-21 season but amid the weird season, Boston was consistently inconsistent. The team hovered around .500 for much of the season.
With the team at 21-23 at the March trade deadline, Boston tried to add a spark to the roster, dealing for Orlando Magic guard Evan Fournier while trading away center Daniel Theis to the Chicago Bulls in a separate trade. Fournier missed time after the trade because he contracted the COVID-19 virus.
With the team at 34-31, it lost star Jaylen Brown for the rest of the season to a torn ligament in his left wrist. Boston went 2-5 over the final seven games to finish 36-36.
Much like the Celtics, Thompson's role was also inconsistent. He began the season as a starter in a double big lineup with Theis, but came off the bench at times too. Thompson missed 13 consecutive games due to health and safety protocols which were connected to the COVID-19 virus.
Overall, Thompson appeared in 54 games (43 starts) and amassed 7.6 PPG, 8.1 RPG, 1.2 APG and 0.6 BPG in 23.8 MPG. Boston had the seventh best record in the East and qualified for the play-in tournament. As seventh seed, the Celtics had to win just one game to take the seventh spot. Boston faced the Washington Wizards in the play-in. Tatum had 50 points and Kemba Walker added 29 in an easy 118-100 Boston win. Thompson chipped in 12 points and 12 rebounds in the game.
After defeating Washington, Boston entered a playoff matchup with the second seed Brooklyn Nets and its vaunted trio of Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and James Harden. The Celtics meanwhile were relying on Tatum with Brown absent.
In the series opener, Durant had 32 points and 12 rebounds, and Irving put up 29 points as Brooklyn outscored Boston 57-40 in the second half to win 104-93. The second game was a laugher as Brooklyn led by as much as 33 points in a 130-108 rout.
Tatum was dominant in the third game, scoring 50 points in Boston. Marcus Smart added 23 points as the Celtics held on for a 125-119 victory. However, Boston would lose key players Walker and Robert Williams for the rest of the series to a left knee bone bruise and ankle injury respectively. Added to Brown who was out for the rest of the season, Boston was severely shorthanded.
Tatum (40 points) was great once again in Game Four, but Brooklyn's trio of Durant, Irving and Harden combined for 104 points as the Nets comfortably won 141-126. Brooklyn led for much of the fifth game, and never relinquished the lead in the second half, winning 123-108 and eliminating Boston.
Thompson was productive in the first round loss, managing 10.4 PPG on 58.8% shooting, 9.8 RPG and 1.2 BPG in 26.4 MPG. This included a 19-point, 13-rebound performance in Boston's lone win in Game Three.
youtube
After Boston's early exit, it was back to the drawing board. Thompson was a casualty as Boston looked to create wiggle room below the luxury tax by dealing Thompson's contract after just one season with the team.

Delon Wright is a master of none, but solid at several categories. That very fact is the reason that Wright has played for several teams over a relatively short period of time.
During his sixth year in the NBA, Wright was traded at midseason by the Detroit Pistons to the Sacramento Kings for Cory Joseph and two second round picks. It marked the third time Wright was traded in less than two years.
Wright joined the Kings and was a quality third guard capable of manning both backcourt positions behind starters De'Aaron Fox and Tyrese Haliburton. The guard appeared in 27 games (eight starts) with the Kings, putting up 10.0 PPG, 3.9 RPG, 3.6 APG and 1.6 SPG in 25.8 MPG. Wright started the final eight games of the season, averaging 14.1 PPG, 5.9 RPG, 6.1 APG and 2.4 SPG in 34.1 MPG.
When Sacramento acquired Wright, the team was in 10th place in the West and had a chance at qualifying for the play-in tournament. After a five-game winning streak placed the Kings at 22-25, the team had a nine-game losing streak that dropped it to 12th place. The stretch killed Sacramento's hopes at the play-in and the Kings finished outside of the playoff picture with a 31-41 record.
After drafting guard Davion Mitchell in the first round of the 2021 draft, the Kings created a logjam in the backcourt. The team wouldn't necessarily need Wright and could focus on improving a weak rebounding roster.
Tumblr media
Bruno Fernando joined the Atlanta Hawks after he was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers 34th overall in the 2019 NBA Draft from the University of Maryland and was traded for the 57th pick in 2019 Jordan Bone and two additional second rounders in 2020 and 2023.
Fernando joined the Hawks Summer League team in 2019 and struggled in three games, compiling 4.3 PPG on 31.3% shooting and 3.7 RPG in 26.8 MPG.
The Hawks began the 2019-20 season 2-0 and that would be the team's high water mark. Atlanta went 2-16 over the next 18 games to quickly fall out of the playoff picture. With the team a miserable 8-32 over the first 40 games, Atlanta began to play better. Youthful pieces such as Trae Young, John Collins, Kevin Huerter and rookie Cam Reddish played better and the Hawks went 12-15 over the next 27 games to reach 20-47.
However, the NBA season shut down in March of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. When the NBA season returned with a Bubble format in August, the Hawks did not qualify ending their season. In his rookie year, Fernando played in 56 games (13 starts) and registered 4.3 PPG, 3.5 RPG and 0.9 APG in 12.7 MPG.
In the 2020 offseason, the Hawks signed guard Kris Dunn to a two-year, $10 million deal. Dunn was expected to be a backup point guard with the ability to slide over to the two because of his defensive ability.
Atlanta began the 2020-21 season 4-1, but struggled, falling to 14-20. At that point, Hawks head coach Lloyd Pierce was fired and replaced by assistant coach Nate McMillan on an interim basis.
Soon after the coaching change, Atlanta became one of the better teams in the NBA, going on a 27-11 run. The Hawks rose to fifth in the Eastern Conference with a 41-31 record during the '20-'21 season.
Dunn missed most of the season due to arthroscopic surgery on his right ankle and what he defined as a see-saw issue between his ankle and right knee. He returned late in the year without a defined place in the rotation and played in four games, managing 1.3 PPG, 1.5 RPG, 0.5 APG, 0.5 SPG and 0.5 BPG in 11.3 MPG. Fernando appeared in 33 games during his sophomore season, posting 1.5 PPG and 2.4 RPG in 6.8 MPG.
Atlanta matched up with the New York Knicks in the first round of the playoffs. Atlanta took the first game 107-105 after Trae Young made a clutch shot with less than a second remaining. New York evened the series with a 101-92 win.
The Hawks took the third and fourth games at home by double digits and closed out the series in New York with a 103-89 victory.
After the first round win, the Hawks faced** **the first seed Philadelphia 76ers in the East Semifinals. In the first game, Atlanta stole homecourt with a 128-124 road win. The Sixers responded by winning the next two games by 16 points each to take a 2-1 series advantage.
In the fourth game, Atlanta won 103-100 to tie the series 2-2. The Hawks took Game Five 109-106 on the road with Young contributing 39 points. In Game Six, Seth Curry and Tobias Harris combined for 48 points to help the Sixers win 104-99.
Hawks guard Kevin Huerter put up 27 points in Game Seven and Atlanta pulled away late to win 103-96 and win the series 4-3.
In the Conference Finals, Young had 48 points and 11 assists to help Atlanta take the first game 116-113. The Bucks won Games Two and Three by double digits. In the third game, Young suffered a bone bruise in his right foot after stepping on the foot of a referee.
Even with Young out, Atlanta won Game Four 110-88. Bucks All-Star Giannis Antetokounmpo suffered a serious knee injury in the contest that would keep him out for the rest of the series. The Bucks won Game Five 123-112 and Game Six 118-107 despite Young returning in that contest. Milwaukee won the series 4-2.
During the postseason, Fernando played just 11 minutes and 40 seconds, scoring six points. Dunn appeared in five playoff games, averaging 1.2 PPG in 6.6 MPG.
Tumblr media
After the trade, Dunn was shipped with Carsen Edwards and the right to swap 2026 second round picks to the Memphis Grizzlies for Juancho Hernangómez in September.
Fernando stayed on the Celtics roster. First, the big man joined Boston for Summer League where he put up 9.3 PPG on 75% from the field and 5.3 RPG in four contests.
He played in 20 games with Boston, amassing 1.0 PPG and 0.8 RPG in 2.9 MPG. He also played four games with Boston's G-League team, the Maine Celtics, averaging 13.8 PPG, 8.5 RPG and 4.0 APG in 23.3 MPG.
At the trade deadline, Fernando was traded with Enes Freedom and Dennis Schroder to the Houston Rockets for Daniel Theis.
The second round pick Atlanta sent to the Celtics was originally owned by the Portland Trail Blazers. The pick had been exchanged over a series of trades before Boston selected University of Tennessee forward Julian Phillips with the 35th pick of the draft.
After selecting Phillips, the Celtics moved him in a draft night deal to the Washington Wizards in a three-team deal that involved the Memphis Grizzlies and was centered around Kristaps Porzingis. Five days after, the Wizards sent Phillips' draft rights to the Chicago Bulls for two second round picks.
Tumblr media
Delon Wright joined the Hawks as a backup guard to Trae Young. Atlanta had expectations to be one of the top teams in the East after its Eastern Conference Finals appearance the previous season. The Hawks began the year 4-3 but endured through bouts of inconsistent play.
Atlanta dropped six games in a row to fall to 4-9 before a seven-game winning streak brought the club to 11-9. Then a 6-16 stretch made the Hawks just 17-25 and in 12th place. Atlanta quickly got back into the playoff picture with a seven-game winning streak.
Over the final 40 games, the Hawks went 26-14 to finish the regular season at 43-39. The record placed the team ninth in the East, qualifying for the play-in game.
In his seventh NBA season, Wright appeared in 77 games (eight starts) and managed 4.4 PPG, 2.9 RPG, 2.4 APG and 1.2 SPG in 18.9 MPG. Wright lost his spot in the rotation at times as coach Nate McMillan opted to go with veteran scorer Lou Williams who provided more offensive pop than the defensively-inclined Wright.
The guard wasn't aggressive on the offensive end, attempting the least amount of shots per 36 minutes in his career (6.7 FGA per 36 mins). But Wright's defensive impact was significant. Atlanta allowed just 108.8 points per 100 possessions when Wright was on the floor, the lowest figure of any Hawks rotation player per NBA Stats. Wright also had the highest steal rate on the team (3.1%) according to Basketball Reference.
As the ninth seed, the Hawks had to win two play-in games to qualify for the playoffs. In the first game, Atlanta hosted the 10th seed Charlotte Hornets. Young had 24 points and 11 assists as Atlanta cruised to an easy 132-103 rout. The Hawks advanced to the second play-in matchup where they faced the Cleveland Cavaliers for the eighth spot.
Cleveland jumped out to an early 14-point lead mainly thanks to six threes in the first quarter. However, Young was able to dominate on offense. The diminutive guard had 38 points and nine assists as Atlanta outscored Cleveland 56-40 in the second half to win 107-101.
The win put the Hawks in the playoffs for the second consecutive season. As the eighth seed, Atlanta faced the first seed Miami Heat.
In the first game of the first round matchup, Miami led by 20 points in the first half and never looked back in a 115-91 rout. The second game saw Miami build another double digit lead. However, the Hawks battled back and cut the deficit to three points on two occasions late in the fourth quarter.
Jimmy Butler (45 points) scored seven points unanswered to help the Heat pull away late and win 115-105. In Atlanta, the Hawks took a double digit lead in the first half of Game Three. Miami looked to take full control of the series after a 21-0 run in the third quarter gave them an 84-68 advantage. Atlanta fought back and made the game close.
After a P.J. Tucker three-pointer with 54 seconds left gave Miami a 110-109 lead, Trae Young made a shot with five seconds left to give the Hawks a 111-110 lead. Butler missed a three at the buzzer, giving the Hawks the win.
The Heat took a 3-1 series lead after Butler led all players with 36 points and Miami won 110-86. In Game Five, the Heat looked ready to close the series out, pulling ahead 67-52 in the third quarter. The Hawks made the game close, getting within three points with 56 seconds left.
With chances to tie, Hawks forward Danilo Gallinari missed a jumper with eight seconds left and the Hawks were unable to get a shot off after securing an offensive rebound. Miami won the game 97-94 and eliminated the Hawks.
Wright's defense and penchant for knocking down shots at an efficient rate gave him a boost in playing time during the first round. The guard played in all five games, producing 8.2 PPG on 51.7% shooting from the field, 4.8 RPG and 2.8 SPG in 27.4 MPG. Also, the team performed best with him on the floor. In the 137 minutes Wright played in the series, the Hawks outscored Miami by 7.9 points per 100 possessions according to NBA Stats, the best rate of any player in the Atlanta rotation.
Wright became a free agent after the season and signed a two-year, $16 million contract with the Washington Wizards.

Tristan Thompson joined the Kings as a veteran sage for a young roster in need of rebounding and physicality in the paint. Thompson was primarily a reserve.
The Kings began the 2021-22 season at 5-4 before dropping eight of the team's next nine games. In that stretch, head coach Luke Walton was fired and replaced by assistant Alvin Gentry. During those crucial times, Thompson made headlines before Walton's departure about how he doesn't need a coach to inspire him.
“No man in this world should rely on another man to inspire him. Point-blank, you can put that in all capitals. Me personally, no one should ever need a coach to inspire you. If you don’t get inspired in the game, then you shouldn’t be on the court.”
The big man played in 30 games (three starts) and compiled 6.2 PPG, 5.4 RPG and 0.6 APG in 15.2 MPG before he was included in a six-player trade that saw Tyrese Haliburton go from Sacramento to the Indiana Pacers for center Domantas Sabonis.
Tumblr media
Tristan Thompson on his excitement with joining a young Sacramento Kings roster (via The Sacramento Bee):
"I'm excited to be here. This team has a lot of very talented young players and I've been on the other side when me, Kyrie [Irving] and Dion [Waiters] were in Cleveland and LeBron [James] came back. LeBron brought the energy and kind of brought that hard-work mentality each and every day, and I think it's only right to take what I've learned from him and pass it on to the younger generation and our stars that are coming in this league.
"That's how you keep this league growing and that's how you keep the talent at a high level. Vets that learn great things from others and don't want to pass it on, you're doing a disservice to our league. It's a brotherhood and a fraternity, so it's my job to pay it forward and then when D. Fox and Tyrese and Davion get to my age, they pass it on to the next (generation) and that’s how you keep the league at a high level."
On what he brings to the table for Sacramento:
"I'm just going to come in and do whatever it takes to win. I think everyone knows what my strengths are and what I can bring to the table and how I can impact and change a game. What I've done in my career is impact winning basketball, so I think everyone knows that."
On how he asked former King and fellow Canadian Cory Joseph about Sacramento after the trade:
"As soon as the trade happened, I called Cory. He told me the staff here is great and the fellas that are here, they want to learn, they're great listeners. And Cory's been at a high level in his playing career, winning a championship and being on multiple playoff teams and being competitive.
"He said, 'Double T, just be yourself and go in there and teach the young fellas. Go in there and be yourself,' and that’s just working hard every day, punching the clock, putting my hard hat on, and leading by example, but also with your voice and knowledge."
Atlanta Hawks general manager Travis Schlenk on acquiring Delon Wright (via Hawks.com):
"One of our priorities entering the offseason was to solidify the backup point guard spot. Delon is a consistent two-way guard who has been a part of several successful teams. We think he’s a great fit here. I'd also like to thank Bruno and Kris for their contributions to the Hawks, and I want to wish them well as they continue their careers."

i was thinking about suicidal knights.... how many times in arthurian stories did lancelot try to kill himself and what exactly would drive a knight to suicide in these stories over than Love and Yearning?
Hello anon!
I discussed Lancelot's mental illness at length a while back, which can be found here. His suicidal and self-harming tendencies are mentioned as part of that, obviously, but some of the links to articles are now broken. (But I have PDFs of the textbooks they originate from, which I will share here.) Let's go over the subject again. Content warning for suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, and self harm.
Academic Sources: Medieval Attitudes Towards Mental Illness by Edith A. Wright, Representing Mental Illness in Late Medieval France by Julie Singer (contains chapter Of Metal and Men), The Enemy Inside by Brian Burfield
Medieval Sources: The Knight of The Cart by Chréiten de Troyes, The Vulgate Cycle edited by Norris J. Lacy
I couldn't put a number on how many times Lancelot attempts suicide. But it's definitely more than once and occurs in more than one text. In his introductory text, The Knight of the Cart by Chréiten de Troyes, he tries to leap from a window, stopped by Gawain.
Tumblr media
In the Vulgate Lancelot Part IV chapter 120. Lancelot Discovers Galehaut's Casket and Defends It; Lancelot Rescues Meleagant's Sister, Lancelot stumbles upon Galehaut's tomb and suffers grief so great, he attempts suicide but is stopped by one of the Lady of the Lake's helpers.
Tumblr media
So I don't think it's fair to say it's love/yearning that drives Lancelot to this behavior, but grief, or even guilt. In Knight of the Cart, it's the queen riding away, as well as the shame of having ridden in the cart, that drives him to the edge, so to speak. And in the case of the Vulgate passage, he sees his life as forfeit and thinks it's fair he should die for Galehaut as Galehaut died for him. This is a response unique to Lancelot. While Yvain, Tristan, Palomides, etc have madness episodes in their stories, they more so forget themselves and wander the wilderness, which Lancelot also does. But Yvain, Tristan, and Palomides aren't depicted as suicidal. So I think Lancelot is in a category all his own separate from other knights who distress about lost love, unless you were thinking of another outright suicidal knight. I can't think of one off the top of my head. The majority of them are religious and fear the eternal ramifications of killing oneself, so it's generally avoided. I guess the exception there is Gawain, who fought Lancelot until receiving his death wound, thus circumventing the "punishment" for killing himself. But he was, once again, spurred on by grief, and not merely love/yearning. So that's an interesting theme throughout.
I hope this answers your question. Have a good week, anon.

Good Omens Aziraphale's Sad Bastard Breakup Playlist
After the breakup, Aziraphale has a new job in heaven, having taken Gabriel’s vacant position. Aziraphale is haunted by sad music reminding him of his time with Crowley. The songs are dramatic, tragic, melancholic, angry, wistful, romantic, and sentimental. How does he listen to music at his new job in the head office? Are material objects allowed? Does he keep a secret stash of tea, cake, and records and a phonograph player in his office? Does he have a celestial radio that can tune in Earth radio stations? Does he sneak off to Earth to hang out in record shops and bookstores? Or more dramatically and emotionally torturously, does he remember every note, every nuance, every feeling, of every song and replay them in his mind? He's stuffing his face with angel food cake and tea while crying and listening to sad bastard songs and hiding from Michael and the Metatron.
See note after list on song selection process.
Songs include:
“Lacrimosa” – Mozart, Requiem in D Minor, Vienna Mozart Orchestra
“Commendatore” – Mozart, Don Giovanni, Amadeus film soundtrack
“Ja, tot katoramu vnimala” – Rubenstein, The Demon, Nicolai Ghiaurov
“D’amour l’ardente flemme” – Berlioz, The Damnation of Faust, Maria Callas
“Liebestod” – Wagner, Tristan and Isolde, Waltraud Meier
“Ach ich fuhls” – Mozart, The Magic Flute, Gundula Janowitz
“Thy hand, Belinda … When I am laid in earth” – Purcell, Dido and Aeneas, Janet Baker
“E lucevan la stelle” – Puccini, Tosca, Placido Domingo
“Celeste Aidia” – Verdi, Aida, Mario Lanza
“Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen” Mahler, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau
“Der Wanderer” – Schubert, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau
“Love is a Plaintive Song” – Gilbert and Sullivan, Patience, D’Oyly Carte Opera Company
“I am a Courtier Grave and Serious” – Gilbert and Sullivan, The Gondoliers, D’Oyly Carte Opera Company
“The Gentleman is a Dope” – Rodgers and Hammerstein, Allegro, Blossom Dearie
“A Hymn to Him” – Lerner and Lowe, My Fair Lady, Rex Harrison
“Could I Leave You?” – Sondheim, Follies, Alexis Smith
“We Do Not Belong Together” – Sondheim, Sunday in the Park with George, Bernadette Peters and Mandy Patinkin
“On My Own” – Schonberg, Les Misérables, Frances Ruffelle
“As Long as He Needs Me” – Bert, Oliver, Judy Garland
“Stranger in Paradise” – Wright and Forest, Kismet, Richard Kiley and Doretta Morrow
“A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square” – Sherwin and Maschwitz, Vera Lynn
“Night and Day” – Porter, The Gay Divorcee, Ella Fitzgerald
“I’ve Got You Under My Skin” – Porter, Born to Dance, Shirley Bassey
“Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered” – Rodgers and Heart, Pal Joey, Sarah Vaughan
“They Can’t Take That Away From Me” – Gershwin, Shall We Dance, Fred Astaire
“Mon Deu” – Dumont and Vaucaire, Edith Piaf
“Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien” – Dumont and Vaucaire, Edith Piaf
P.S.: Aziraphale likes Les Mis because it reminds him of that time Crowley rescued him from the Bastille. Don't tell anyone. It's a big secret.
P.P.S.: “Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered” reminds him of the time he and Crowley got drunk in the backroom at the bookshop the day the anti-Christ was delivered to Earth. Basically, this song reminds him of every time they went out for drinks or stayed in and drank.
P.P.P.S.: “I am a Courtier Grave and Serious” was the song Aziraphale planned to play when trying to tempt Crowley into learning the gavotte. It reminds him of the ball in the bookstore when he finally danced with Crowley.
P.P.P.P.S.: “Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien” is as close as Aziraphale can get to telling the world and Crowley to eff off. He has no more effs to give. Or at least he’s trying to convince himself he no longer gives a f***. He’s going off to his new job at the head office and Do Good.
Note on song selection:
I selected songs that thematically fit with the relationship between Aziraphale and Crowley. I think the songs tell a story of Aziraphale’s struggle to reconcile his conflicted motivations. They reflect Aziraphale’s fears and desires. He fears being hauled off to hell for disobedience. He fears Crowley’s death and being alone in the world. He desires to be emotionally intimate with Crowley. (Dare he risk physical intimacy with Crowley?) He feels self-righteously indignant, but he’s soft and squishy and weepy and misses his best friend.
I don’t have much knowledge of opera or musical theater, but I have some experience with choir and solo performance. I did a lot of research into opera, art songs, musicals, showtunes, and standards to create a playlist on YouTube. Selections were based on availability, popularity, and sound quality. My big question was whether or not Aziraphale is a strict originalist or if he likes different versions of songs. In some places, I chose newer versions over original versions due to the sound quality of the recordings. I tried to keep selections accessible to a wide audience with varying degrees of musical knowledge. You may not like my choices, so your mileage may vary. You can make your own playlist.
You can listen to it on YouTube.

I finally got my hands on something I've been looking for (for a reasonable price) since I was just a lowly little level 12 hornball - A "Marvel Swimsuit Special!"
Tumblr media
This is the second issue in the series (though the third book of its kind), and it was released in 1993 when... times were different.
The coolest thing about them (other than the totally radical '90s hunkeroos and baberinos in general) is the amount of really talented artists that submitted pieces - So many industry-leading folks putting their spin on the self-aware, low-brow, tongue-in-cheek project.
This first image was by Joe Jusko, a super popular cover artist at the time. I remember his Conan covers the most.
I'll eventually scan the whole thing in high quality, but for now, I'll take some preview pics to show you some of my favorite and/or goofiest pages:
Tumblr media
Here is Domino, looking like we might need to race her to a Dermatology appointment. She's apparently tacky enough to wear a swimsuit with a domino print on it.
And check out Cable in the back - Sun's out, cyberbun out! He's ready to catch some waves on a totally-worth-the-money-and-production-time rocket-powered machine gun surfboard.
I really appreciate this artist's commitment to all the "Liefeld pouches" here. I hope they're waterproof, or all those Tic Tacs inside 'em are gonna get ruined. :(
Penciling by Chris Batista, ink by Hector Collazo, coloring by Mark McNaab.
Tumblr media
Let's kick off the "after the jump" part properly with this glorious image of Pip. Because this is certainly what people bought this book for.
It just so happens that this fuzzy little asshole narrates the entire issue, so he's to blame for the inherently sexist captions on all the pictures.
Jesus Christ, he's got two big toes on each foot.
Pencilking by Darick Robertson, ink by Andrew Pepoy, coloring by Tom Smith.
Tumblr media
I love me some Cloak and Dagger.
Tandy looks as gorgeous as ever. Surely she owns stock in boobie tape by now.
Tyrone, however, is getting so much sand stuck to him right now... I don't think he digs being used as a beach blanket. I'm... not even sure he's ever had to wash his cloak before today! Yikes. He's all like:
Tumblr media
Penciling by Joe Madureira, ink by Terry Austin, and coloring by Gregory Wright.
Tumblr media
I can't stop laughing at how much Thunderstrike looks exactly like the Genetic Freak, Big Poppa Pump Scott Steiner in this picture:
Tumblr media
The work is entirely by Lou Harrison. It may not surprise you to learn he's also a Fantasy artist.
Tumblr media
I've always had a thing for Silver Sable, and this page is just fantastic.
That being said, my favorite part is Sandman sitting there, looking like a dope, shaped like a sand castle. Which, while it seems silly, was probably the most challenging and detailed thing I've ever seen him do with his powers. Worth it for the shot, I suppose!
Line work and ink by Steven Butler, a favorite of mine. He did penciling for the "Silver Sable and the Wild Pack" series (which got me attached), but he's also known for designing the Scarlet Spider suit. Coloring by Gregory Wright.
Tumblr media
If you thought I wasn't going to Morb out on this post, you were undead wrong.
Just look at that ridiculous batpackage. Also... Is he really serving a cape over a leather jacket, but with absolutely no pants? Damn, dude.
Penciling by Gary Barker, ink by Jimmy Palmiotti, coloring by Tom Smith.
Tumblr media
I can spot Adam Hughes' work a mile away, wow. I guess I didn't realize he was doing work for Marvel this far back.
A fierce-as-ever, short-haired Natasha who looks like she got slammed so hard against a rocky wall that it cracked, got up, emptied out the rest of her clip, and still had enough time and energy to pose during a reload.
Black Widow, bay-bayyy. ♫
Tumblr media
Oh my god, Ghost Rider is just so naughty. Wearing nothing but his birthday bones.
This scene just looks like it smells awful.
Artwork by Tristan Shane.
Tumblr media
Shulkie in a metal bikini (function over fashion?), bursting out of the lava from an active volcano. You wanna talk "hot tub?" Sure, this gets a feature.
Penciling and ink by cover artist Steve Geiger, coloring by Paul... Mounts.
Tumblr media
Deezamn, Bishop. Never seen guy looking so buff before.
Instead of just Bishop, this looks like Hank McCoy and Bishop had a child together. Does he have any other mode than "arm vein p-pop?"
Penciling by Dwayne Turner, ink by Mark Farmer, coloring by Gregory Wright.
Tumblr media
Ah, one of the more famous '90s Psylocke images that wasn't done by Jim Lee.
This centerfold was used in lots of comic store ads for several years after this issue came out. I remember seeing posters in the shops themselves. Trading cards of this picture are one of the most costly to collect.
It's beautiful, and the colors/lighting/shading are all fantastic.
Penciling and ink by the wonderful Art Thibert, creator of the Raft max security prison and inker of some of the most iconic X-title covers.
Coloring by Paul Mounts, who did the coloring in hundreds and hundreds of just Marvel comics alone - I didn't mention that earlier because I was snickering at his name earlier in the She-Hulk feature. My bad.
Tumblr media
Well, this wouldn't be Tumblr without a cat picture, yeah? Or a catgirl picture, I suppose.
This is the most adorable scene in the book. Just Tigra innocently taking a cuddle nap with some... um... wow, I don't know what the fuck those things are. Snuggle up anyway!
Penciling and ink by Amanda Conner, coloring by Gregory Wright.
Tumblr media
Huh. Of all the characters in this book, I really didn't expect to see Dr. Cooper... Either which way, the swimsuit under the detective get-up is pretty choice, honestly.
This is, of course, another Adam Hughes line art joint. Ink by Mark Farmer, coloring by Gregory Wright (who did a lot of these, huh?).
Tumblr media
What's this? A parody ad that you'd more expect to see in an issue of "What The--?!" that only '80s kids will understand? Yup, totally.
This was in the back of the book and doesn't fit the theme at all, but it gets a mention because of the weird inclusion and also to stall time until I had the final image ready, because I needed time to prepare...
Tumblr media
THIS.
This is the one.
How could I not end this little "show and tell" without this beauty right here?
Here, we have remorseless killer Frank Castle flexing his best end-of-catwalk pose in front of a... wrestling match between a bunch of lady demon dinosaurs battling... for his affection? To tip him American cash? Or maybe all those hearts come from their love of beating each other up? I'm not here to judge.
And then there's a sign for 75 cent hotdogs, but it's been covered with another sign for... $20 tooth brushes? What in the shit is going on here?
There is one thing I do know, though. The artist wants you to think that The Punisher has at least $2.75 worth of hotdog under that massive crotch skull.

All Creatures Great and Small: Samuel West on his Yorkshire heritage, meeting his fellow cast members and finding Siegfried
All Creatures Great and Small actor Samuel West talks to Stephanie Smith about his Yorkshire heritage, first meeting his fellow cast members – and finding Siegfried Farnon.
paywalled article - full article copied below
If there is a magic formula for making a hit TV drama series in the 21st century, All Creatures Great and Small has bottled and then gift-wrapped it. Values are key and, says Samuel West, the upcoming Christmas Special spreads a much-needed message of decency and kindness.
“It’s about people coming together in difficulty, to support each other, at a time when so many terrible things are happening in the world,” he says. “It’s got absent friends, people who are missing, people who won’t ever come back, just like life.”
Samuel plays Siegfried Farnon, the Yorkshire Dales vet with a short fuse and a huge heart. It is a role that he has more than made his own, even for those who remember Robert Hardy in the original BBC series that ran from 1978 to 1990.

The “new” Channel 5 adaptation launched amid a pandemic-crippled UK back in September 2020, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the publication of If Only They Could Talk, the first of the James Herriot bestsellers penned by Thirsk vet James Alfred “Alf” Wight. There have now been four TV series made (and we are talking to mark the release of a DVD box set of them).
All Creatures has been a great success for Channel 5, with viewing figures for the fourth season peaking at 3.7million. Samuel saw the show’s potential from the off. “I was already thinking about Channel 5 as a good place, because they had given up Big Brother and so they had to fill about 250 hours a year of schedule, and they started filling it with drama, which was delightful.”
When approached to play Siegfried, he was already a respected actor, with a rich and varied career mingling theatre, TV and film, radio and voiceover work. Nominated in 1993 for a BAFTA for Howards End, his film credits also include Jane Eyre, Van Helsing and Notting Hill, while his TV work includes the BBC’s Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell (filmed in York in 2015), Waking the Dead, Any Human Heart, Slow Horses, The Crown, Small Axe and four series of Mr Selfridge. He was artistic director of Sheffield Theatres from 2005 to 2007.
He learned that Golden Globe and BAFTA award-winning production company Playground was making the new All Creatures. “I had just finished watching Playground’s Wolf Hall, which I had adored, and that period stuff is hard to get right, and expensive to do well,” he says.
The treatment he was sent included a back story about Siegfried, written by lead writer, Ben Vanstone. “It was beautiful,” says Samuel. “Almost sort of Chekhovian in its detail and the cables that ran through the man. They had set a lot of things in this past that had made him layered, and I realised, just from thinking about the man, and looking at the books and remembering Robert Hardy’s performance in the 1970s, that he was going to need a lot of playing. It was going to need vocal and physical size. But I thought, if I am on the right track and I know where I am coming from, I think I’m quite good casting.”
He met Nicholas Ralph (James Herriot), Rachel Shenton (Helen) and Callum Woodhouse (Tristan) on the train from Leeds to Skipton for a couple of days’ rehearsal. Samuel says: “At the end of the journey, I thought, what lovely people, and at the end of the rehearsal, I thought, this ensemble really works, and then they cast Anna Madeley and she was the icing on the cake that was already rising.”
Siegfried is often spotted reading The Yorkshire Post. “Quite right, too,” says Samuel. “ I also love the paper. I think your editorials are sometimes some of the most sensible things I read all week.”
In this series, Siegfried is a widower, a detail not in the Herriot novels but echoing the life of the real man who inspired the character, Donald Sinclair, whose first wife, Evelyn, died of tuberculosis. He was married to his second wife for 53 years. She was called Audrey, which just happens to be the lesser heard name of Anna Madeley’s character, Mrs Hall.
Samuel discovered more about Donald Sinclair when he teamed up with real-life vet Peter Wright while making the programme All Creatures Great and Small Meets The Yorkshire Vet, which airs on Channel 5 just before the All Creatures Christmas Special on December 21. He also visited The World of James Herriot with Alf Wight’s children, Jim Wight and Rosie Page, and has incorporated into Siegfried’s portrayal some of the details they passed on. “My father says, do as much research as you can because, even if only 10 per cent is useful, the more you do, the bigger the 10 per cent is. Except he says I say that.”
Samuel’s father, actor Timothy West, is Bradford-born. Family legend has it that Timothy’s father (actor Lockwood West, known as Harry) was on tour there at the time. “It's not true,” says Samuel. What actually happened was, in pre-NHS days, he and his wife, Olive, also an actor, had been told of an inexpensive maternity home up in Yorkshire. Samuel says: “They were playing in Eastbourne at the time. She went by train to Bradford, had the baby, and Harry continued to do eight shows a week.”
Samuel - who has two daughters, aged nine and six, with his partner, the playwright Laura Wade - plans to save the All Creatures Christmas special to watch with his father and mother, fellow actor Prunella Scales. “My father, in particular, is quite cross that he’s not in it, but he can’t be in everything,” he says. “And we would have to be related - we look increasingly like each other.”
The All Creatures Great and Christmas 2023 episode will be broadcast on December 21, at 9pm in the UK on Channel 5 and My5.
