Built to Spill, Prism Bitch, & Itchy Kitty Live Show Review: 5/4, Thalia Hall, Chicago
Tumblr media
BY JORDAN MAINZER
Ask Built to Spill fans why they love the band, and you’ll likely get a wide variety of answers, ranging from their dreamy themes to their earnest moods and stories. Ask this Built to Spill fan why he loves to see the band live, and it’s because Doug Martsch is a bona fide guitar hero. Plus, this current incantation of the band--with bopping, limber bassist Melanie Radford and mighty drummer Teresa Esguerra--is arguably the tightest Built to Spill has ever been. Thursday night at Thalia Hall, it was Esguerra’s birthday, and she played double duty, also in openers Prism Bitch. But the celebration was about more than just the calendar year. It was a tribute to Built to Spill’s most recent album When The Wind Forgets Your Name (Sub Pop), their finest in years, and the endurance of their back catalog among followers new and old.

Built to Spill always amazes me with how much sound they can get out of three people: with Martsch, Radford, and Esguerra, they delivered shredding intros, extended jams, and even some surf rock choogles. They entered the stage to Rush’s “Tom Sawyer”, and then proceeded to--wait for it--play a couple minutes of the song, instrumental, before traditionally opening with their own trademark epic, “Goin’ Against Your Mind”. I’d like to believe that in an alternate universe, Built to Spill is regarded as musically limber as the Canadian prog rockers, just as much as Martsch is regarded as a quintessential Pacific Northwest storyteller. When covering Heartless Bastards’ “The Mountain”, Radford took lead vocals, a dead ringer for Erika Wennerstrom, which answered the question you never knew you need the answer to, “What if Heartless Bastards had Doug Martsch on lead guitar?” Her sneaky lines on “Center of the Universe” and vocal harmonies on unreleased jangle pop ditty “Fire To Dust” made you wish Martsch would break his rotation and just keep her as a full-time member.

Of course, Esguerra proved to be more than versatile, her time-keeping centering Built to Spill and her mammoth fills propelling Albuquerque's Prism Bitch. Dressed like pilots and flight attendants, the latter started out with vibrant, synth-heavy pop from their most recent record PERLA. The democratically laid out four-piece saw guitarist/keyboard player Lilah Rose taking lead vocals on most songs but with bassist Lauren Poole in harmony, guitarist Tris Walsh slowly adding burning, creepy, sludgy, and psychedelic riffs to the fold on their punkier, older songs like “You Got I Want”. Best, they blasted through the supremely catchy, weeks-old “Woman” with aplomb, their hooks increasingly demanding of larger crowds and stadiums.

The most abrasive was Spokane’s Itchy Kitty, their unique combination of yelped punk and wiry goth-glam priming the audience for a night of genre-hopping rock and roll. The Osees-like squeal affects on guitarist Catman’s licks effectively matched the wails of guitarist/singer Ami Elston and bassist Naomi Eisenbrey on songs like “Coca-Cola Snakes”, “That Was My Dinner” and their irreverent “Psycho Killer” cover. Drummer Michael (Sug) Tschirgi chugged away as the rest, especially Elston, convulsed like feline versions of Ian Curtis. If Built to Spill and Prism Bitch were wound, Itchy Kitty was the ultimate expression of unbridled performance.

Out of pure habit, Shane still introduces himself as deputy. Officer Walsh sometimes, too, especially to strangers or people he feels would be most comforted by the knowledge. A man of the law - he'd protect them - until he remembers where he is. When he is.
He isn't an officer, anymore. Law is dead - and so is the deputy.

My friend told me the other day that when they can't sleep they sometimes listen to like an audiobook or a podcast or something just very quietly so there's something to keep their mind from racing and I think I'm going to try that tonight if I can't sleep again, just pop on a book that I've already read so it doesn't matter if I fall asleep and miss loads of it. Today has been okay but as soon as I'm not doing or thinking of something else my brain defaults straight back to the same stuff and it's exhausting!! Hopefully plan A of just falling asleep without any issues works out but if not I've got a wee Marian Keyes in mind to help me drift off 😌

dear lord. TW for mentions of transphobia and related topics.
My mom told me that she wanted to watch a documentary with me, one that she had been hearing a lot about. She said it featured a man who's name she couldn't remember, going all over the country asking people what a woman was. And shockingly, people were so rude to him! He just wanted to know what a woman was. And apparently it was very controversial. for context, I am closeted and genderfluid, though biologically female.
Hearing this, I assumed it would be something interesting; maybe something about how women are perceived, how the idea of a 'real' or 'proper' woman has changed over the centuries/millennia, maybe a dash here and there about societal norms, social constructs, etc.. I expected maybe a bit about trans women as well- nothing negative, just a discussion on womanhood etc., what they as trans women believed alluded to being a woman, since trans women are women, yet they have a different experience with womanhood from cis women.
The documentary turned out to be "What Is A Woman" by Matt Walsh. I quickly realized that oh, this was going to be NOTHING like what I hoped for. Just from watching the trailer and reading the descriptive language in the summary made it clear that this guy wasn't looking for a deconstruction of gender as a whole. The amount of misgendering in this film was appalling, first of all, and I noticed inconsistencies within how he acted on the documentary and how he appeared on things like Dr. Phil.
In this documentary, throughout most of it he seemed to take on the stance of 'guy trying to ask an innocent question sets off liberals and feminists'. He uses humor and the use of a 'calm and collected' attitude to appear like the bigger, correct person. But he seemed especially aggressive in the clip of the Dr. Phil episode he showed, not a man who 'just wants to know the truth', but a man with strong opinions and no respect for the people he was conversing with- a theme I noticed in the interviews as well.
Obviously, I could go over the many poor comparisons he made, such as 'what if I told you I was a black man' etc.. I could also point out that he seemed oh so confused when he was called an asshole at the women's march, even though he was told several times to go away, he visibly made people uncomfortable, and even brought a megaphone to shout at people.
Instead, I raise a counterpoint; what is a man? And, more importantly, why do you give a shit? And yes, again, I could go on about how in this documentary and in conservative media in general, they're extremely fond of describing puberty blockers as 'pumping our kids full of drugs/hormones'. So he could argue that he cares because of the children. But the fact that there's loads and loads of proof that trans kids who don't get proper care will and have committed self harm/suicide? Heck, looking at the bigger picture outside of gender... if it really was all about the children, wouldn't he also be making documentaries about the hundreds of other ways that kids are being harmed by our society?? School shootings, poor healthcare, poor/no access to mental health services, the rise of mental health issues as a whole, etc..
But nope, it's all about the leftists 'carving up' kids.
I will admit, I still have to do some of my own research on a few topics mentioned, like the bit about John Money etc.. But overall, I gotta say that I was not a fan of this documentary. Bonus- I doubt he got consent from the tiktokers featured in the film to actually use/show their tiktoks.
Anyways, trans women are women, and trans men are men. <3 love y'all, sorry this was so long. i have a lot to say on the topic.

TERFs couldn't keep Posie Parker out of their movement. They tried, like some of them really did think of themselves as feminists and cared about more than just exterminating trans people, some of them expressed concern that their movement's figureheads were ceding ground to Matt Walsh, but there was never going to be any meaningful resistance to fascism in the TERF movement. Their movement was fundamentally anti-feminist and racist.
I mention this, because it's already happening to this new online movement of TMRAs. There's moderate ones, I got a few in my inbox. "Come on, no one's saying that transmascs are more oppressed than trans women, we just have a right to recount our unique experiences." and those ones are already expressing concern that their movement is housing open transmisogynists. People who say Kiwifarms is a necessary evil, who expound the validity of sex-based oppression and outright deny the misogyny that transfems face, who sexually harrass and threaten transfems for sport and content.
See, the issue is that there was never going to be any resistance to transmisogyny in this movement. Your premise is flawed, you chose bad axioms. Even in its most moderate form, your movement is one skeptical of intersectionality, of the very concept of being oppressed on one axis but privileged on another. Enjoy skeptic-youtube 2: transgender boogaloo, you made your bed for it.
