Analysis: Lance Dur Webtoon Episode 5, The Third Death
(aka, Ronik's "let's try reading too much into some comics, and the Lance Dur series" challenge)
TW: Discussion of Child Abuse (physical, emotional, psychological), Filicide, Patricide, Child Neglect. Just the usual things that come up when talking about Lysmee, Agard, Lance Dur, Kerubim, God Ecaflip, and Joris, and their character parallels.
Tumblr media
When looked at from the lens of symbolism and motifs, this comic is one of the more important pieces of Kerubim lore we have. And I really, really mean it. I need to talk about it.
But to talk about it... I will have to do something bad. Something I really wanted to put off for as long as I could:
THIS POST WILL SPOIL THE ENTIRETY OF THE LANCE DUR CARTOON, THE LANCE DUR WEBCOMIC, AS WELL AS THE CIRE MOMORE WEBCOMIC.
For this reason, I will be placing this analysis under a read more.
Tumblr media
The thing that really gets me about this comic, is that it explicitly makes Kerubim a character foil/parallel for Agard and Lysmee.
Once or twice, I might have said things like, "Joris parallels Yugo, Atcham parallels Joris," and so on, — because of similar troubles, or character beats, — but let it be clear when I say "parallel" here, I don't mean conjecture, or correlations. What is happening here, is a bit... different.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Through his inclusion in this comic, and the role he takes in it as a victim of the Cire Momore curse, — the same way Agard was, — an explicit parallel is drawn between Kerubim and Agard.
Tumblr media
And, by that logic, between Kerubim and Lysmee as well, — for Agard is already her foil and parallel.
In a way, their being a trinity really enriches the way one can understand these characters, — they form a sliding scale, I think, — because for every mirror image they have, there is a small deviation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
From Lance Dur's genuine love for his son and failure at showing it for all those years, and Ephedre's hatred of everything, to Ecaflip's godly "love" being both cruel and transactional.
Tumblr media
In a way, despite Cire Momore not actually picking victims in-universe, symbolically speaking, she is the unhealable, unbeatable wound of parental trauma, personified.
It's no wonder, her long-term targets, within canon, are Agard and Kerubim.
Tumblr media
Something can have many different symbolic meanings in the same story. From the march of death, to the weight of parental trauma.
The past, with all the horrible things that happened in it, is as real as the future, and the ending it holds. And it's always coming for you.
Tumblr media
Sometimes, they are actually two in the same. At least for Lysmee and Kerubim.
This is the level of parallels that Lysmee, Kerubim, and Agard operate on. Even though Kerubim being their parallel is only a minor thing, because Agard and Lysmee's stories are mostly intertwined between one another, it is still a good way to analyse things.
(I hope someone makes a similar post to mine, but mainly about Agard and Lysmee. I'm too much of a Kerubim fan to be talking about them...)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
All three of them grew up with parents who weren't supportive of who they were as people. The onee person who was supposed to nurture them, treated them like an object at best (Agard, Kerubim), — or derived pleasure from their suffering at worst (Lysmee, Kerubim).
Between the two, Kerubim seems like the middle ground. Agard has a toxic, distant parent, Lysmee has a horrible, physically abusive mother, and Kerubim has a toxic, emotionally and psychologically abusive parent.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Their stories diverge, yet remain reflections of one another.
Lysmee dreams of breaking free, but is killed by her own mother in the end. Kerubim cannot die, or get rid of, his father. And Agard kills his father, — obtaining a tragic sort of freedom, an actual ending to their relationship.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lysmee and Agard reflect one another with violence, with poison. They both plan their parents' death, but for different reasons, — a want to be free of abuse vs. a twisted way to show love.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kerubim and Lysmee reflect one another in inability to die or move on, — cursed to live forever by their parent, out of hatred, or out of love. But it differs, — for Kerubim, an eternal life, marred by death, by disease, is a pleasure, because he has his loved ones. But Lysmee... isn't living. She is suffering, forever.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Agard and Kerubim reflect one another by loving their fathers despite how bad things were, but having a way to move on, just a little, and try to be better fathers themselves, — separate from their toxic parent. But Kerubim will always have to look behind his back, to police his speech, to try and please Ecaflip, — because he is always watching, and he can always take all of Kerubim's freedoms back, at the snap of the fingers.
Tumblr media
The way Kerubim experiences his haunting by Cire Momore is emblematic of his relationship with Ecaflip — everpresent, clouding over his thoughts, yet, if he focuses on moving forward, he can ignore it, if just for a bit.
Tumblr media
The way it ends, is also a reflection of their relationship: only Ecaflip can choose, when, exactly, Kerubim stops suffering, — and he will keep him in danger, until Kerubim gives him what he wants.
Tumblr media
Kerubim tries to free himself of the pain that his relationship with Ecaflip brings him by using fatherhood, but only ends up mirroring the dynamics that caused him pain. Joris wishes he could help him, but he is literally seven, and he has no idea how, — besides staying by his side, together, for eternity. Suffering from a very similar pain to Kerubim, but because of Kerubim himself.
Forcing himself to parent his own parent, to try and lead him from his pain.
Tumblr media
Lysmee tries to free herself from the pain of her mother's abuse with romance, but the circumstances against them are far too strong, — Gustav can't even begin to help her. No matter how much he wishes he could. The only thing he could do for her is to die and be cursed together for eternity.
Tumblr media
The same way Ecaflip is the only one who can save Kerubim, and the only one who could have saved Lysmee was Ephedre, the only one who can save Agard is Lance Dur, — because, as I had pointed out, all of them are the reason of their pain.
Tumblr media
But the difference is that Lance Dur truly loves Agard. He might not have been the best father, he might have hurt him, but he loves Agard, enough to make sacrifices.
Tumblr media
And if it took her mother's hate to doom her, it's quite poetic that it took a parent's love and determination that can finally set Lysmee free.

Hello again haha. Thanks for reccing your reading list, that's so detailed and helpful, you must have put so much work into it and I really appreciate it! I was also just wondering if you had any particular favourites? I feel like you have good taste. Thanks again!
Hiii, I'm glad you find the reading list helpful!! Thank you!! Here's some of my favourites (in no [particular order):
Batman: The Cult - this is easily my favourite Robin!Jason comics
Batman: Under The Red Hood - this will always get me emotional
Countdown to Final Crisis - has its good and bad things, as all comics do, I just find the dynamic between Jason Todd, Kyle Rayner and Donna Troy so interesting, I wish we got more of it
Red Hood and the Outlaws #18 - again, has its good and bad things. The thing I love most is the Bruce and Jason interactions that we get out of it
Robin War - the dynamic between the Robins is definitely something to witness
Trinity Annual 1 and Trinity #13-15 - aka 'Dark Destiny Arc'. The parallels this brings is so interesting to me
Batman #100 - it's a part of Joker War so beware but I'm a sucker for some good batfam moments
Batman Urban Legends #1-6 - don't have much commentary for this one other than I enjoyed the storyline
Nightwing Annual 1 - some Dick and Jason being brothers
Task Force Z - all 12 comics are pretty good but if I had to recommend just one, it'd be Task Force Z #6. The Bruce and Jason interactions will leave you crying
That's all for the main storylines. I'd also definitely recommend the Batman: Wayne Family Adventures Webtoon!!

Nine Mutuals I’d Like to Know Better
Tagged by @stormbeyondreality
To quote Nin:
Tumblr media
3 Ships
The DC Trinity. I will forever support Batman x Superman x Wonder Woman. ALWAYS.
Ralof and Hadvar. I just like it. A lot.
Stucky. Bucky Barnes and Steve Rodgers FUCKED. I will not elaborate.
First Ship
Probably Tasha and Tyrone from Backyardagains. That was my favorite show as a kid, and I saw their similar head shapes and went “yes. Head shape = love.”
Last Song
What Else Can I Do? (Isabella’s Villain Song) by Lydia the Bard. I love her Villain rewrites, and my favorite has to be Tale As Old as Time, or We Don’t Talk About Bruno. She’s an amazing singer and vocalist.
Currently Reading
I’m in between books right now (as in, I saw the notification at the exact moment I was about to open a new book). But the book I just finished was Electric Idol by Katee Robert, and the one I’m about to read is Wicked Beauty by Katee Robert.
I’m also reading Keeping Count by @nerevar-quote-and-star on Ao3 and Lore Olympus by Rachel Smythe on WEBTOON
Last Film
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay part 2. I only watched to the halfway point then started doing stuff. I got bored, and Gale pisses me off a lot.
Currently Craving
Tea. Peppermint tea to be specific, with 1/2 cup of sugar and 3 drops of lemon juice. Food wise, a seafood bag boil from this one restaurant in the city, which has crab, shrimp, lobster, potatoes, and corn. And it’s really spicy🤤

Howdy! My names Paradox, or Para by some of my pals. One of them, the good lady Trinity, actually directed me to you to ask this question!
I’m a budding writer, comic artist, and so on who’s been enthralled by a book project of mine lately. Trinity suggested I use Wattpad as a publishing venture because of your personal experience with the company!
I just wanted to ask some questions about using Wattpad to publish one’s work, anything will help!
First off! Would you suggest it for first time publishing?
If not, what would your suggestion be?
Any tips for me in this pursuit?
I hope you find the time to, and I hope you’re having a good day!
Hello! I'll DM you in a few minutes for a more detailed conversation about your actual book, but my first instinct would be to ask:
a) what the project is, and
b) what your goal with it is.
Depending on both of those things, Wattpad (or any of the other serializing platforms like it) may or may not be the right choice for your project.
What is Your Project?
Original Work - make sure that wherever you choose to share the book, there's a clear ToS that indicates that the copyright of the novel stays with the creators at all times. Also take a look at the recommended chapter/part/episode length on the different platforms--you may find your work better suited to one or the other based on the platform's word length requirements or best practices notices.
Genre and Medium - different sorts of projects thrive on different platforms. Radish is great for steamy, spicy, dark, sexy romances. Tapas seems to be the shrine of BoysLove/BL graphic novels/thumbscrollers. Wattpad is great for fandom work and YA. Webtoons seems to be a great place for KDrama style comics. Take a good hard look at your work's genre and where other works like yours thrive, and figure out which platform already comes pre-loaded with your ideal readership. (Note: some platforms have strict rules about how many other places you can publish the same work, and at what times, especially if you're monetizing it.)
Fanfic - Like the above, consider the different sites and see which one has the legal protection, curation, and fandom/readership that would best suit your tale. You can't monetize fanfic, so going where the readers are is the best way to get all those kudos and warm fuzzies.
What is Your Goal?
Just Sharing For the Fun of it / Practice - I'd say dive right in, then! Who knows what will happen! You might get some great feedback, make some awesome friends, garner some great moots and build a wonderful and supportive community, and learn loads. There's nothing saying you can't share one for free and then look into monetizing the next project.
To Make Money - people can be stingy and judgy with things that are behind paywalls, so make sure your work is the most polished it can be, and fits the best practices of the site you've chosen as well as you're able. On some sites you're allowed to control whether you'd like to monetize your work, and some others you have to apply to/ submit to be considered. Take a good look at each of the models on the sites you're considering and decide which one works best for what you want.
To Get Traditionally Published - the path from selfpublished on a serialization site to traditionally published is a very thin, not particularly well-worn one. Besides the books specifically hand picked by the Wattpad Books and W by Wattpad publishing teams (usually through the Watty Awards), or their graphic novel/comic side Webtoon who publish the Webtoon Unscrolled books, I can think of vanishingly few novels that have been selfpubbed first and then picked up for traditional publication. If you want your project to be tradpubbed, maybe try querying agents and indie publishers first.
That said, having a project on a site like Wattpad will give you a lot of experience and metrics that you can brag about if you elect to query around a second or different project. I cite my serialization site readership numbers in my tradpub marketing documents all the time.
Have a Movie Made - Maybe take a screenwriting class instead? If the ultimate goal is to get a movie made of your story, why not just write a movie? It is a lot rarer than it seems from the outside for a novel to be adapted, and if that's the only reason you're doing it, consider that maybe you're writing for the wrong medium. For more info on that, read my article about How Books Become Movies.
Become Internet Famous - You do you, I guess. I have no idea how it would work, and no advice for that because I am deffo not Internet Famous, and have no desire to be. Looks exhausting. But don't let me stop you!
Already Available
No matter what serialization site you choose to publish on, be aware that this means the manuscript will forevermore be what is considered "Already Published" by the whole traditional publishing business machine. It's out there for free already--so why should any agent or publisher pick it up when they won't be able to get readers to pay for it?
There are very, very few agents and publishers willing to look at Already Available projects , and generally only those with massive pre-existing readerships and fanbases.
If you're okay with that, then by all means, selfpub on these sites. But go into it knowing that the tradpub world considers posting to serialization apps to be basically equivalent to selfpubbing (and that's neither good, nor bad. No value judgement here. It just means that they'd have to approach the marketing and business side of things in a certain kind of way. For all that they deal in stories and sell beautiful pieces of writer's souls and imagination, never forget that tradpub is An Industry (tm), and many, many of the decisions are made because Capitalism.)
Do your Research
Talk to other writers on the site if it seems scammy, or the offers are Too Good to Be True. Be careful where you share your original work and what you agree to. Read all the contracts thoroughly.
Be Prepared to Hustle
That's not to say that there's no hustle involved with getting your work out there, particularly on social media, if you are a traditionally published author. There's loads, especially post-publication as most marketing efforts and budgets are spent on the pre-release leadup.
But if you're selfpubbing on a serialization site, you're going to have to do all of your own marketing and talking yourself up. That includes joining and participating on forums, discords, chat groups, writer's groups; creating and sharing graphics and book trailers on social media; BookTokking (if you like that sort of thing); volunteering at conventions or meetups; hosting workshops or free writer's lessons, and answering qs like these (* winky face *); submit it for on-site promotions and contests; etc.
You'll have to review recent trends in book covers for your age market, genre, and platform and create a cover that will attract the right readers. You'll need to craft pitch copy for your book using the same research and meticulous editing. And you'll need to look into metrics to figure out what time of day/day of the week it's best to drop new parts/episodes/chapters.
And of course, what took you months, perhaps years to write and perfect, it takes readers a mere matter of hours to consume. So you'll always need to be thinking of the next project if you're looking to build a sustained career and readership out of the posting.
Or you know, maybe you don't have to do any of that. Maybe you can just share exactly how you want to, when you want to, why you want to, and enjoy that too! Again it all depends on what your goals are.
What you choose to put into it, you will probably mostly get back out of it. Sweat equity Return on Investment is always a crapshoot.
(But hey, I keep doing it because I enjoy it. I love sharing stories and reading people's comments and enthusiasms for my tales.)
In the End, There are No Guarantees
So wherever you decide to post, however you decide to post, make sure that you keep your expectations realistic and your heart open. Everything you hope may come to pass, or your story could sink and get no views. Make sure you're okay with either happening, and remember to celebrate all the little wins, and have fun.

The Breaker Và Top 4 Manhwa Đề Tài Võ Thuật Hấp Dẫn
The Breaker
The God Of High School
Ông ta mời cậu tới một giải đấu mang tầm cỡ quốc tế: The God Of High School.
