Liladrien Week 2024 | Day Four: Solitude
Lila’s heels clatter against the cobblestone as she walks. When she brings her left foot down at an awkward angle, the stiletto point of her shoe dives into a crevice in the ground and nearly brings her off balance. But, elegantly, surely, Lila throws her weight in the opposite direction, manages to regain her balance, manages to not break her angle, and continues on.
It’s a cool night, not a cold one, but the brisk wind and the light rain make it feel as if it should be chillier than it really is. Along Lila’s arms, goosebumps are raised. Her dark red backless minidress looks good and costs a pretty penny, but doesn’t really do anything against the elements. Along Lila’s flank is an embossed black mini bag, containing her phone, her wallet, cosmetics, and nothing else.
Her reflection drifts alongside her in darkened windows and the glossy hoods of cars as she walks. Above, the sky is the shade of David Lynch’s Blue Velvet (1987). Lila could see cars in the distance. Lampposts flicker in and out.
Lila is far from the heart of Paris.
Ah, Paris, this lonely, dark, arrogant city. With its enviable history and funny people. Lila will never get over the way they pronounce gin . Seriously, walk up to a French person and ask them to pronounce gin.
Lila hasn’t been back in Paris for a long, long time, and she plans to thoroughly enjoy her temporary sojourn.
At the edge of an industrial complex, constructed at the mouth of a sprawling car park, is a closed travel agent’s office. Lila approaches the dim stairs that lead to the second floor above it and climbs.
Upstairs, it’s much warmer and sightly.
Lila sighs, relishing in the heat and the classy décor. Marble pillars and an under-lit bar table. Small clusters of plush armchairs are granted the veneer of privacy by their fences of giant potted leaf figs. A waterfall wall bubbles merrily on the far side from the entrance, glowing with neon light fixtures.
As Lila walks, her heels clatter on black-and-white chequered floor tiles before becoming muffled on scarlet carpet. She approaches the bar, clenching the edge of it coquettishly while the well-dressed and reticent bartender looks up from the silverware he is polishing.
“So, um…” Lila says, scanning the shelves of alcohol lined by along the glass shelves. “Could I have an…espresso martini, please?”
The bartender puts down his silverware. He starts up the espresso machine, which purrs like an awakening leopard. Lila leans on her elbows upon the bar, watching him work.
He stamps freshly-ground coffee into a filter, fitting it tight into the grouphead . He lays a tiny glass cup beneath the drip and presses a button Lila can’t see. The espresso machine buzzes and dark, aromatic liquid flows down. Meanwhile, the bartender has obtained a bottle of Belvedere vodka and a bottle of Mr Black Cold Brew coffee liqueur from the shelf behind him. He adds ice into a silver cocktail shaker, then measures in two shots of vodka and one shot of coffee liqueur. A drizzle of golden honey syrup, the espresso shot is dumped in, and the entire thing is shaken economically and intently.
The final cocktail is poured into a crystal-clear martini glass; alcohol the shade of Lila's hair lightening and puffing into a foam the colour of her skin.
The bartender drops three whole coffee beans on top in the pattern of a trillium and slides the cocktail over the counter to Lila.
“Thank you!” she coos, tapping her black American Express card against the EFTPOS scanner.
After she tucks her wallet back into her bag, she drops it, letting her purse hit her flank. In the same instance, she picks up her cocktail and turns around, leaning on the bar while she sips.
Lila can hear the sound of the bartender cleaning behind her. Ahead, she could see the entirety of the demure, sophisticated little bar.
The wafts of cold and mist drifting up the stairs, losing the battle with the establishment’s artificially produced heat. The glimmer of the lustrous, dim lightning reflecting off metallic surfaces. The few patrons gathered at this hour talking to each other in low voices inside cushioned alcoves. At a table to Lila’s right, a silver fox conversing with an enchantingly sweet-looking minx.
Over by the lone table facing an entire wall of floor-to-ceiling glass, is a singular man staring down at his drink.
Lila takes a sip of her martini while taking in the back of this man. She's interested because he appears to be her age, financially-comfortable , and stylish. Then, Lila pauses. And moves closer.
Adrien Agreste is nursing a half-drunk whiskey. One fingerpad circling the rim of the glass over and over again in hypnotic circles while the amber liquid glimmers like topazes. His eyes are misty and he appears to be deep in thought. He wears a black leather jacket with a white V-neck shirt, dark jeans, and YSL Wyatt Harness boots. The Tiffany & Co. silver dog-chain necklace dangling at the crux of his sternum is blank and innocent.
“Hi,” Lila says.
Adrien startles and looks up.
“…hey,” he says.

The New England IPA
New England IPA, also known as NE IPA, is a beer style that has recently gained popularity. It is a type of India Pale Ale (IPA) with unique characteristics that set it apart from other IPAs and this style of beer is one of my personal favorites. This article will discuss the factors that make NE IPA so unique. History and Origin NE IPA originated in the northeastern region of the United States, specifically in Vermont and Massachusetts. The style emerged in the early 2010s as a response to the growing popularity of West Coast IPAs, which were known for their intense bitterness and high-hop content. The first NE IPA was brewed by The Alchemist, a brewery in Waterbury, Vermont, in 2004. The beer was called Heady Topper, and it quickly gained a cult following among beer enthusiasts. Other breweries in the region, such as Tree House Brewing Company and Trillium Brewing Company, soon followed suit and began brewing their versions of NE IPA.
Tumblr media
Palmers Town NEIPA | Twin Barns Brewing Company | New Hampshire Craft Beer Appearance One of the most distinctive features of NE IPA is its appearance. Unlike traditional IPAs, which are clear and bright, NE IPAs are hazy and opaque. This cloudiness comes from using large amounts of hops during the brewing process. The hops create a lot of particulate matter in the beer, which remains suspended in the liquid, giving it a cloudy appearance. Craft Aroma and Flavor NE IPAs are known for their intense hop aroma and flavor but are not as bitter as traditional IPAs. Instead, the hops used in NE IPAs are chosen for their fruity and floral qualities rather than their bitterness. This gives the beer a juicy, tropical flavor reminiscent of citrus fruits, stone fruits, and berries. In addition to hops, NE IPAs often contain adjuncts such as oats, wheat, or lactose. These ingredients contribute to the beer's creamy mouthfeel and add sweetness to balance out the hop bitterness. New England IPA - Malt Character Another factor that sets NE IPAs apart from other IPAs is their malt character. Traditional IPAs have a dry, biscuity malt profile that provides a clean background for the hops to shine. NE IPAs, on the other hand, have a softer, sweeter malt profile that complements the fruity hop flavors. This is achieved using malted barley kilned at a lower temperature, resulting in a more complex malt flavor.
Tumblr media
Palmers Town NEIPA | Twin Barns Brewing Company | New Hampshire Craft Beer Yeast The yeast used in NE IPAs also plays a significant role in the beer's unique character. Many NE IPAs are brewed with yeast strains that produce fruity esters and add to the beer's overall fruitiness. Unfortunately, these yeast strains also flocculate poorly, contributing to the beer's cloudy appearance. In conclusion, New England IPAs are Delicious In conclusion, a New England IPA is unique because of its hazy appearance, intense hop aroma and flavor, creamy mouthfeel, sweeter malt profile, and fruity yeast character. This combination of factors distinguishes beer from other IPAs and has gained a loyal following among beer enthusiasts. NE IPA is a perfect example of how the craft beer industry continues to evolve and innovate, and it will be interesting to see how this style develops in the future. Read the full article

Trip to Seoul, August 2023 - Day 3: Shopping
Tumblr media
On the third day in Seoul, I was going all out today to buy souvenirs!
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
■ LOTTE Mart
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
LOTTE Mart
■ WINE & MORE 聖水店
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
<追記>
Tumblr media
e-martで「No Brand」(...
Tumblr media
Tumblr media

The Brew York Beer Superlatives 2022
Tumblr media
We said goodbye to Good Beer in the East Village in 2022 (Photo: Chris O'Leary)
Let’s take a look back on the year that was. New York City’s beer scene grew slowly this year in terms of notable openings, but its most popular breweries continued to expand in new and interesting ways. We said farewell to some old favorite bars but welcomed new spots that will serve great beer well into the future. Let’s dive in.
Brewery Opening of the Year Belse
Tumblr media
In New York’s crowded beer scene, finding a niche that can set a brewery apart is becoming more of a challenge than ever. But Belse broke through by offering a stellar vegan food menu along with its beers. And its beers are nothing to scoff at — brewer Ryan Gilette is German-trained, and has a resume that includes stops at Hyde Park Brewing, New Belgium, and Trillium. The beautiful German-engineered brewhouse he’s brewing on sat dormant inside the shuttered storefront on the Bowery after the previous occupant of the space, Paulaner Brauhaus, closed in 2018. Now it’s being used to churn out some stellar beers, from crisp lagers to hazy IPAs. Manhattan’s beer scene is roaring back to life, and I’m glad that Belse is a part of it.
Most Heartbreaking Closures St. Gambrinus Beer Shoppe and Good Beer (tie)
There’s simply no way to decide which of these two closures broke more hearts, but beer fans in Brooklyn and Manhattan were delivered doses of bad news this year when these two spots that pioneered the bottle shop/beer bar model shuttered to bookend the summer, with St. Gambrinus closing at the end of June and Good Beer selling its last beer in mid-September.
St. Gambrinus opened back in August of 2013 and quickly became a neighborhood favorite and a low-key spot to pre-game before an event at Barclays Center or sip a beer outdoors in their backyard. They hosted events from countless local breweries and always had a reliable tap list and friendly faces behind the bar. They had a loyal following of regulars who celebrated “St. G.” Thankfully, the closure of the space was short-lived, as it reopened as a new Hops Hill location later in the year.
Good Beer’s closure hit me personally. I was the first to give the place a write up before it opened in 2010, when I lived in the East Village and bought beer to stay and to go multiple times a week there. Owner Dave Cichowicz was a “delightfully jaded proprietor,” and his staff over Good Beer’s 12 years in business was full of people as passionate and knowledgeable about beer as he was. It leaves a hole in my heart to know the city will be without this place.
Beer of the Year DDH Riwaka+Motueka, Other Half Brewing
Tumblr media
Early this spring, Other Half pulled out all the stops with New Zealand Week — a week of beers with New Zealand hops. I had this absolute gem at the Domino Park location, and it floored me. On paper, it’s just another run-of-the-mill Other Half Double IPA, but that’s where they shine, and showcasing these hops only made this beer shine brighter.
Best Glow-Up Proletariat
Tumblr media
For a decade, Proletariat was serving a stellar beer list out of a cramped space on St. Marks Place — an embodiment of “nobody goes there anymore, it’s too crowded.” But early this summer, they moved a couple blocks to a roomier space on East 7th, with the same great tap list and the addition of a kitchen serving a tasty pub grub menu. It was a much-needed upgrade, but it didn’t take the personality away from the bar.
Trend of the Year Satellite taprooms
Tumblr media
Bronx Brewery opened two new taprooms in Manhattan this year, in the East Village and at Hudson Yards. TALEA opened a pop-up space for the summer at Grand Central and a permanent taproom in Boreum Hill. Gun Hill opened their new location at Industry City in Brooklyn. Sixpoint opened a space in Dekalb Market and announced plans for another taproom in Battery Park City. This builds off of 2021’s momentum that saw Other Half, EBBS, and Evil Twin open their own standalone taprooms. For what the city lacked in new breweries this year, our existing breweries expanded in new ways to bring their beer closer to drinkers wherever they live.
Most Likely to Zig When Others Zag Grimm’s pivot to wine
Tumblr media
It didn’t make news on this site, but in an era where every year brings dire warnings of craft beer’s demise, Brooklyn’s Grimm Artisanal Ales made a pivot this summer to get into the wine business, starting a line of spontaneously fermented wines called Physica Wines with grapes grown on the North Fork of Long Island. It’s very much in keeping with their aesthetic, and while many brewers are pivoting to hard seltzer to bring new drinkers into the fold, Grimm charted a different path.
