WANT LIST 1/11/2017
To “get out of my way”
Written in my notebook during a poetry class last semester. I told my professor that I wanted to write how I watercolor—intuitively, trigged by a curiosity with material, handled with the levity of suggestion. The tact and trust required to let a piece sit, and float, and dry. A drop of ink on page. Now that, but with language.
I wanted to be a priest, an empty vessel, to abdicate control in the service of flow. But I cannot pretend as if my hands move freely. They do not. With effort, I strain every word.
Loosen. Let the poem write itself. Or: don’t let grasping, precious projections desensitize the subject from the form. Attend to the unknown on the page.* Leave a space so God can rush in (Anne Carson, via Maggie).
Loose, freely.**
*How? C.A. Conrad’s So(matics) come to mind, rituals to enact presence in the process of composition, so that a poem isn’t produced, it’s divined. In one ritual Conrad described interpreting a Shakespeare poem by feeding it line by line to a chosen crystal, placing said crystal under his pillow, and asking it translate the line’s meaning to him in his dreams. He would wake and place his collaborator on his Third Eye, and write. Attend to the unknown might mean: come with humility.
Or Gertrude: “Stein shut her eyes and travelled where the sentences led her, and didn’t describe the destination but rendered instead the systematic movement of sentences toward the unspecified.” (Wayne Kostenbaum)
Or Fanny Howe: “I was trying to explain that I let the words write the poem. That is, as you said, making meaning, but at the same time I have this other side, which seeks what’s unknown. I see it come to meet me if I let the words do the work and write the poem”
Attend to the unknown might mean let the words do the work. Which reminds me of my most beloved writing credo, from Reginald Shepherd: attend to the senses and sense will often attend to itself.

To decenter and expand
(Conrad also describes sending students to commune with trees in a writing workshop. The returned dismayed because, “trees hate us … The hubris of our species is that we don’t believe a tree has any thoughts until we cut them down and grind them up and put our own thoughts on them with pencils and pens.”)
A soft spot for philosophies that extend conscious beyond the matter encased in our skulls, matter made of the same matter made of all else. Humility. Decentering the mind as a first step towards unlearning dominion. Our hubris. This both appeals to whatever Zen sensibilities I inhabit, but more importantly, acts as a foundation for an ecological ethics. A decolonization of the spirit.
If God is infinity, then everything that exists is in God; therefore, all creatures and things are part of the single substance that is variously called Nature or God (Jackie Wang on Spinoza).
Or Yusef Komunyakaa: I am the space my body believes in (A kind of material faith).
Such expansiveness undermines any (false) sense of self-containment. Blessedly—
We seemed to be alone but I knew we weren’t. Skin was some temporary solitary confinement. I assumed things would ratchet up to a better version of awesome with my death—at which point I would resume the ecstatic, breezy, primordial bustle of simply flying around with everything.
A stew of everythingness. Or, like Wang on “oceanic feeling”—an experience of expansiveness where one’s illusion of a bounded self dissolves into an experience of infinite communion. Freud’s denial of such oceanity as a dissociative regression gives away his dismissal of an infant’s (our) sensorial envelopment with the Mother. However—Freud coined the phrase from his correspondence with Romain Rolland (a Spinozian) who, rather, described oceanic feeling as a mystical encounter, “the affective state underlying all religious experience,” limitlessness, unbounded.
Wang asks: Is our experience of ourselves as bounded, discrete selves just a trick of the ego? Is it an effect of language, which operates through differentiation and naming? Or is the self a construction or mode of perception conditioned by an idea of the “individual” articulated in the discourses of the Enlightenment, psychoanalysis, and liberalism (which locates freedom in individual choice and agency)?
And, more importantly: How does the disintegration of the ego alter one’s orientation to the world and to others?
A hunch: inhabiting a flesh, a space, beyond the body might (must) deepen an empathetic experience of the Other, of all other beings, of the world. A communion of feeling. Or—
Hapticality, the capacity to feel through others, for others to feel through you, for you to feel them feeling you… (Fred Moten & Stefano Harney).
And, finally, hauntingly, Clarice Lispector: Am I free? There is some thing still holding me. Or am I holding it? It’s also this: I’m not entirely unbound because I am in union with everything (She was a Spinozian too).
To let words fail
Slowly reading through Julia Kristeva’s fictional analysis of St. Teresa de Avila (thank you Fi), a marriage between my preferred modalities: mysticism and psychoanalysis. Kristeva reads Teresa’s mystical testimonies as halting approximations of the (inherently) inexpressible mystical experience.
Teresa is Lacan’s poster-girl for the Other-jouissance: the ineffable, unspeakable, coming. Upon seeing Bernini’s Teresa, agasp in ek-stasis, Lacan concludes that the essential testimony of the mystics consists in saying that they experience it, but know nothing about it. (Again, attend to the unknown!)
Wang applies this to oceanic feeling and writing: if oceanic feeling is a regressive state, akin to a return to immersive child’s play, the artist/writer can, in a process of concentrated creativity, oscillate between this “incommunicable world” (a mystical state) and a sobered consciousness that allows for the mystical experience to be (haltingly) assimilated into signification.
I would also add that oceanic states animate writers and artists precisely because they are inexpressible. If we agree with Lacan’s assertion that the subject’s desire is animated by lack, then the impossibility of expressing the oceanic state may paradoxically incite the subject’s desire to symbolize that state (Wang).
Enter a poet’s fetish of the failure of language: to be an artist is to fail, as no other dare fail (Beckett). Still, it’s idle to fault a net for having holes (Nelson).
I do not feel constrained by language’s disappointments. They keep me humble. And hopeful. The fact that our perception is delineated and thereby inherently limited allows for something else, for the beyond-words, for, for example, Merleau-Ponty’s phantasmic: something (or, more properly, some non-thing) that escapes our attempts to…survey it…a register characterized by an ungraspability.
The phantasmic may or not be material. It is not necessarily invisible, but it is indefinable, rendering the phantasmic as that which cannot be encompassed by our knowledge of it*, rather than that which cannot be perceptually grasped (Gayle Salamon via Dodge).
*A fine expression for (of) God.

lockdown film no. 34 - The Half of It (2020) dir. Alice Wu
13/05/2020
I enjoyed the stop motion bit at the beginning a Lot. It was a shame they didn’t do more with it throughout the film
- couldn’t take the first band scene seriously because when they were singing Annie’s song all I could think of was being in a football stadium in Sheffield singing the greasy chip butty song (sheff gang rise up)
- don’t know who needs to hear this but if you want a favour from someone do not pull them off a moving bike
- the scene where Ellie dropped all her stuff and aster helped was pretty basic but I did really like how Ellie stood up with the phone glued to her head
- it feels very much like a shakespearean comedy with false identities, which I’m super here for
- (just clocked its Cyrano de Bergerac. At least its better than the shit storm that was Sierra burgess)
- oh the bathroom scene. Dead. Love that. Focus pulling ? Yes please. But the girls ? Get in the bin
- the idea of revising for a date because in reality you have Nothing in common is an absolute nightmare but it’s what Paul would do because he’s like effort = love. I don’t think I agree with that. Obviously you should put effort into your relationships with people but you can’t bludgeon someone into loving you, nor can you bludgeon yourself into loving them. If a person Does Not Love You for whatever reason, it doesn’t matter how much effort you put in. And then that feeds into really toxic stuff of boys not knowing how to take it when someone doesn’t like them and how they’ll then think “I just didn’t try hard enough” and that just leads to stacks and stacks of bludgeoning which is obviously a terrible vibe
- it slightly upsets me how high they play ping pong. technique left the chat
- ellie really was not subtle when she was saying the reasons why someone might theoretically like aster. Come on pal. 
- the scene where Paul made taco sausages for Ellie and her dad was so sweet the way he was standing behind them waiting for their reactions… big golden retriever energy
- “You’re not just a girl”
- “I’m not? Then what are you?”
- CUE EXISTENTIAL CRISIS
- i was getting big carol and Therese in the tunnel vibes when they were driving to aster’s place. Having seventeen playing in the background felt, again, a bit basic
- AWW BABY ELLIE ZOOMING AROUND WHEN ASTER TOOK HER CLOTHES OFF TO GET IN THE WATER
- it was good how when aster got out of the water (presuming she was naked), we went straight in and sat very close with Ellie because aster not wearing clothes isn’t the point of any of this scene, it’s about Ellie and aster and that particular bit was about Ellie and realising the effect that aster has on her. I could waffle for ages about how wlws are conditioned to believe that loving women is predatory and how that has massively affects this scene but I feel like that’s kind of obvious 
- the vending machine bit where Paul kisses Ellie was so awful on so many levels — obviously rank that he kissed her because Ellie didn’t want him to and aster saw, but one thing that really made me sad was how, when Paul said “it’s a sin. You’re going to hell” it was also really upsetting to him because Ellie is his friend and because I guess he equates being gay as someone doing something wrong — it would be as if one of my closest friends did something that didn’t line up with my idea of them, like being racist and beating someone up. that would make me sad so him finding out that Ellie isn't straight made him sad in the same way
- trig’s proposal is literally my worst nightmare. It’s manipulative for starters and I hate the idea of a public proposal, but it’s so hypocritical for him to quote a really nice verse from the bible saying love does not boast and then kind of boasting about the love that he has for aster and using such awful language like “she’ll make me a great wife” doesn’t feel like he understood that verse very well
- i just have to say that asters character did not feel developed at all. We got to the end and I didn’t feel like I was connected to her at all, I know she wasn't really one of the main characters but for the amount of time we spent with her I would have hoped she’d be a bit more rounded as a person
- it was good that Ellie and aster had a kiss, but when I first saw I really didn’t like the way it was done because it made an iffy callback to an earlier scene where paul says that he kissed aster and Ellie was confused because he couldn’t have known that aster wanted him to kiss her. But then in this scene Ellie doesn’t take into consideration what aster wants at all, so it just feels a bit jarring in Ellies character for her to do something like that
- paul running by the train was soft. I liked it
- in conclusion this film is …. fine. I was excited to watch it initially because I’d heard it was a new queer film with a main character who wasn’t white, so I was hyped. I think it is a queer film in the sense that the main character is queer, but her queerness isn’t explored as such, which I think is a shame. It’s definitely good to have platonic relationships at the centre of a story, but I was hoping they’d have more aspects of a queer storyline in this film, so I guess I’m saying it didn’t play out the way I was expecting it to. Having said that, that’s not the films fault

Can we talk about the fact that in 'The Half of it' Aster never says a word to Trig. Like she nods and half smiles but he's the only ones that talks, like he just assumes what she thinks. Even when he proposes she says nothing. It's so terrible and wonderfully done and I love it.

Elster One Shot Prompts
• Aster and Ellie are best friends and Ellie is helping Aster get ready for a date with a guy secretly wish it was her Aster was going on the date with.
• Ellie is caught getting herself off by Aster. Cue extremely flustered and embarrassed Ellie and a teasing Aster. Wonder why Ellie was thinking of...;)
• Aster and Ellie have sex at the hot spring. Aster the one that takes control.
• Ellie and Aster are friends. Ellie has a journal that she writes in. It mostly consists of her feelings for Aster. She loses it one day and panics. Aster finds it and sees the entry about Ellie being in love with her. Aster brings Ellie to the hot springs and tells Ellie she found her journal. Ellie panics and tries to run away, but Aster grabs her and spins her around. Ellie is a flustered and embarrassed mess. But it’s all happy in the end. Could be M rated.
• Ellie is in love with Aster and has Hanahaki Disease.
• Ellie comes clean to Aster at the hot spring because she can’t keep it a secret anymore because she needs to tell Aster how she feels. Sexy times. Of course Ellie is a flustered mess.
• Ellie needs a tutor (maybe she’s bad at like history or Spanish, the one subject she’s not good at) and Aster is her tutor.
• Aster has a crush on Ellie, but Ellie thinks she has a crush in Paul and tries to set them up while her own heart breaks because she’s in love with Aster. Obviously there will be a happy ending.

The Half of It
This movie could’ve been such an artistic and meaningful movie if it lost the Netflix vibe to be fully honest, but i really loved the way it represented everything and the way that it wasn’t about Aster’s character but about Paul and Ellie’s. 
I loved the scene where Aster went up to slap Paul in the church she looked straight at Ellie in doing so, which goes back to how when she was messaging and talking to Paul she was actually talking to Ellie. 
I especially loved the Chinese-American representation, and the bit of mandarin dialogue in it, i always appreciate the language mix in some LGBTQ movies 
I loved it but it could’ve been 100 times better if if wasn't so netflix-y.
