THE WORDS HAD NEVER slipped his tongue only for once – and it had not been necessary. Estinien had not many he considered as family; but for him Alphinaud had become the younger brother he had lost. His heart had acknowledged this fact many months ago; seeing the very same expression inside the younger one’s eyes. Albeit the man would never forget one of his own blood, the true brother he once had, it did not change how he felt.This warmth did not lie even if the circumstances were different; and albeit he wished that this pain deep inside would slowly fade into oblivion, it did not. To accept someone meant to be remembered of his failure; of the condemned day in his past when all he had loved burned to ashes. No prayer had saved them; and not even the courage of his father who had tried to shield his mother with his own body.What remained was regret; the guilt he felt within when he saw this scene of his crushed brother inside his nightmares. As older brother he should have stayed with him – and even died in his place. But he was alive whilst everything else was lost for all eternity. If his little brother was still alive he’d be older than Alphinaud, however, even if only for a few years. Life could not be returned; the dead stayed dead. Yet what lived on were the memories of those who were still alive; those who could remember their voices, their faces and names as they were engraved in their hearts. He did not wish to compare his beloved brother to the young man right in front of him, pondering about what could have been when it was lost. But even then he bore the hope that history would not be repeated and those who he considered as family would be spared from such merciless fate. Alphinaud was certainly no exception; and if he could protect him by sacrificing himself, he would not hesitate.

 A WRY SMILE APPEARED on his lips, barely noticeable and almost hidden beneath a painful mask of worry – one which he usually never allowed to appear. He was not the type of man to openly speak about his feelings, but by now the younger one should be aware of them. Mayhap he would have sent him off with another jest – another foolish remark which would only hurt the other’s pride once again, so he refrained from it. His friends were the only family he had left; and they were the reason why he still insisted on staying alive. Estinien lifted his hand and placed them on the younger boy’s head, gently patting him almost as if he was a little child. Yet he was not – and despite he was fully aware of this, his bigger hand did not retreat. It was a gesture he had been used to make in the past; a simple way to show his affection to one he considered as brother. He leaned down to reach Alphinaud’s forehead, leaving a faint kiss on his skin – another familiar gesture of his past.
