Meshell Ndegeocello (Michelle Lynn Johnson, August 29, 1968) is a German-born American singer-songwriter, rapper, and bassist. She has gone by the name Meshell Suhaila Bashir-Shakur which is used as a writing credit on some of her later work. Her music incorporates a wide variety of influences, including funk, soul, jazz, hip-hop, reggae, and rock. She has received significant critical acclaim throughout her career, being nominated for eleven Grammy Awards, and winning one. She has been credited for helping to “spark the neo-soul movement”.
She was born in West Berlin, Germany to US Army Sergeant Major and saxophonist father Jacques Johnson and health care worker mother Helen. She was raised in DC where she attended Duke Ellington School of the Arts and Oxon Hill High School. She adopted her surname, which she says means “free like a bird” in Swahili.
She collaborated with Yerba Buena on a track featuring Ron Black for the Red Hot Organization’s tribute album to Fela Kuti, Red Hot, and Riot. Proceeds from the album went to various AIDS charities, per the Red Hot Organization’s mission.
She contributed a cover of U2’s “40” to the Enough Project and Downtown Records’ Raise Hope for Congo compilation. Proceeds from the compilation fund efforts to make the protection and empowerment of Congo’s women a priority, as well as inspire individuals around the world to raise their voices for peace in Congo.
She contributed to the essay anthology It Gets Better: Coming Out, Overcoming Bullying, and Creating a Life Worth Living, the vein of the It Gets Better Project.
She is bisexual and had a relationship with feminist author Rebecca Walker. She married Alison Riley (2005). She has two sons. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Ezra Collective Mixmag Set
As is my standard practice, I poured through a load of sets on Soundcloud to find something for this blog. In the end, it came down to this mix by Ezra Collective or to be more precise, bandleader Femi Koleoso for Mixmag, a tribute to Fela Kuti. As Femi states in the Mixmag feature: A mix inspired by the man who makes us dance like no other, Fela Kuti. His influence and DNA runs through every…

One cannot find real happiness in this hectic world. This sweatshirt can give real comfort and joy and reveals a detailed summary of music.
Afrobeat is a niche that appeared in the early 1960s and was a powerful fusion of traditional African music, jazz, highlife, funk, and chanted vocals. Afrobeat is more than a piece of music. It’s an enlightening movement that speaks to the soul. This shirt provides comfort in the present but has a history behind it.
Afrobeat music was founded by Fela Kuti the-de “Afrobeat is not just music.” The ‘Retro Afrobeat is My Therapy’ sweatshirt encompasses this idea perfectly – it talks about the past, but it comforts the present.
A Tribute to Afrobeat Legends

This design contains distinct lines and features bright artwork Every time you put this sweatshirt on, it helps as an invitation to explore the origins of Afrobeat. of the positive energy and important messages Afrobeat musicians bring. Music as Therapy
The features of music in the healing process are not new so it applies to Afrobeat. It just so happens that the kind of romantic tunes and bass-promulgating rhythms proved to elate people’s spirits, ease stress, and contribute to rugged unity. Having this sweatshirt lets us know that music can heal. It explains how Afrobeat with its infectious beats and messages of hope can work as healing to people in their everyday lives.
A Conversation Starter
To begin with, the Retro Afrobeat is My Therapy sweatshirt touches more than just comfort but is also great for starting discussions. This hoodie is easy to chat in, no matter if you have previously been a fan of pop-punk or if you are only now getting into its bopping tunes. It's an opportunity to interact with like-minded individuals and share the beauty of Afrobeat with others. Unlike the everyday fashion accessory which is just a tool of putting on an aesthetic show to envy, it is a way of creating a sense of togetherness in as much as it symbolizes a shared love for the representative artifact.
Conclusion
The retro Afrobeat My Therapy sweatshirt combines style, comfort, and cultural devotion. It's a piece of clothing that tells a narrative, conjures a mood, and offers a method of treatment thanks to its relationship to Afrobeat music. Sonic Revolution: RZN8R's "VXN" Remixes Break Boundaries In the pulsating heart of the electronic music jungle, RZN8R’s "VXN: Remix Album" emerges as a kaleidoscopic manifesto of women's empowerment—a bass-laden odyssey that bridges continents and shatters expectations with each beat. It is less an album, more a rhythmic pilgrimage where soul house merges seamlessly into baile funk, afro beats in arm with garage house. https://soundcloud.com/rzn8r/sets/vxn-remix-album?utm_source=clipboard&utm_campaign=wtshare&utm_medium=widget&utm_content=https%253A%252F%252Fsoundcloud.com%252Frzn8r%252Fsets%252Fvxn-remix-album From track to vivid track, RZN8R doesn't merely remix; he reinvents—plucking familiar tunes from their roots and dressing them in worldly fabrics. There's reverence in reimagining here; every sample feels like a homage rather than appropriation, be it a nod to Brazilian Carnival or the complex footwork of Jersey Club scenes. The silence between tracks? It’s not emptiness but whispered conversation—the spaces we breathe in before diving back into this global fête. To listen to “VXN” is to sync your heartbeat with its rhythm: powerful yet grounding—a bass-heavy call for self-expression. [caption id="attachment_54586" align="alignnone" width="2000"] Sonic Revolution: RZN8R's "VXN" Remixes Break Boundaries[/caption] Imagine if Moby's electronica had an intense session at Fela Kuti's shrine; stir in some St Germain-styled nuances against Kaytranada’s edgy grooves—that's "VXN". Through headphones or across dance floors, RZN8R ensures movement isn’t just physical—it’s emotional liberation set on fire by syncopated percussion and deepened textures. As melodies are threaded from one culture to another and feminine prowess cut through male-dominated samples—with silent nods towards musical matriarchs—“VXN: Remix Album” acts both as tribute and battle cry. "VXN: Remix Album" doesn't end; it reverberates beyond last notes—to challenge us all: How will you move when the world becomes your dance floor? Follow RZN8R on Website, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and TikTok.

Last night at the Mural Arts Wall Ball, I saw the great minds of my time enter the ring and champion the power of voice! Serendipitous that our venue, 2300 Arena, typically hosts boxing and professional wrestling.
But this was no death match. No, a Def Jam poetry slam revival is less a battle and more a tribute to the heart’s vibrance. Each performer took their time to work over the crowd. Raising spirits in the details between the lines. Pieced together the identity behind the microphone and took the listener on a journey through sound and rhythm.
I knew there was a movement in store when the DJ launched the evening with a favorite track by Fela Kuti. Meanwhile aerialists defied gravity, swinging trapeze from the ceiling. Live muralists transformed our surroundings with colors and unique mindforms. Talk about a dream exhibition! Nearby friend and fellow BarnesWest Artist @karensmithdrums led a jazz ensemble on djembe. And I heard one of my favorite Philly poets @urucker take the stage and transmute feeling into sonic overtures like light beams.
As poets, we were there to honor literary legends, Sonia Sanchez and Danny Simmons. The architects of where Philly’s poetry scene arrives today. But as the night progressed it became a celebration of Philly’s cultural might present in each individual.
I met art curator and patron, mother and husband, dreamer and visionary one after the other. And each with a story to tell. Some magic to inspire. A gift of creative impulse to light another’s candle. They asked for poems about Love, Purpose, Growth, Teaching, and all colors of the rainbow. And I felt the Muse dancing happily between us all.
What an incredible way to bring National Poetry Month in Philly to a close. Still a few more days left, but I think after last night I’m going to take it slow and enjoy the reflections!
Thanks so much to Katy from @wittygrittyphl for inviting me to be a part of the ceremonies and to @muralarts for reflecting so much of the diverse dreamscape that is our home! These twenties are roaring, and it’s so special to see all those who are playing a part in making the world a better place, more full of creative expression!
