Continued in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel! was the ability to customize the player’s character with a variety of Skins and Heads. With numerous Heads and Skins to choose from, it should be an obvious answer that not all of these are immediately obtainable by the player. A large majority of both are found by looting, killing, and completing Challenges. It already had a name

We gave it names.

Some knew it by its scientific name—all capital letters with a number at the end, a bloodless and technical definition of a red and angry thing growing larger and closer every day, promising to burn us all away.

Others tried to make light of it. Gallows humor abounded, and the worse it got, the funnier and more creative the names were, like trenchbound soldiers’ increasing familiarity and affection toward the Maxim gunner mulching through them daily.

Still others named it with an eye toward vengeance. Everything starts somewhere, and if you know where it starts, you know who to blame.

We gave it names because that’s what we’ve done since Eden.

It wasn’t necessary.

The plague should have stayed lurking in the permafrost, safely entombed in a prison of ice, but we turned that key quite some time ago couldn’t help ourselves from setting it free.

Thousands of years had passed since it had roamed the Earth. It had nearly ended us then, but only ghosts of it remained. A slight cooling of the planet in the fossil record. A strange genetic bottleneck the biologists couldn’t quite figure out. Trace remnants of a people that had become wheat under a scythe.

It already had a name.

In a language that no one speaks anymore.
