A “new and improved” Kingdom of God

When God is done saving all on earth, what then? Where to from here?

Habakkuk 2.14 forecasts a future time when planet earth is chock full of the knowledge of the lord and virtually every human on the planet (Yes, that includes you and me!) Is saved and transformed into a glorified spirit (Revelation 20.4). Where will God go then?

Retire to Florida? The French Riviera? Alpha Centauri perhaps?

After Alexander the Great had conquered most of the known world he is famously quoted as saying with much disappointment, “There are no more worlds to conquer!”

Isaiah 9.7 says that the Increase of God’s government will never end! Not ever! How can an all-powerful cosmos-creating god produce infinite growth on a finite planet earth?

Mankind started small

The human experience began small in the garden of eden. Just the two of them: humble gardeners. Genesis 2.15 Hardly a prospect for huge growth even conceding they were naked, okay with it, and sure to reproduce! And yet there will be some 8 billion of us by the year 2025. Some 100 billion babies have been born on earth over all time. Revelation 20.13 says sometime in the future God will resurrect them all! Really? 100 billion packed cheek to jowl? (Well, hopefully a few billion at a time.)

Standing room only

After Earth is brimming with people of godly knowledge and deeds, (Habakkuk 2.14) where to then? End of the line? Game over? Fini?

And just how did we earthlings get where we are now?

Genesis 1.1 tells us, “In the beginning god created the heavens and the earth.” In an eye-blink, was it all made? Only 6000-ish years ago as some believe? (See articles at lifehopeandtruth.com.)

Scientists currently estimate the age of the cosmos at some 13.7 billion years (britannica.com). A few decades back estimates ranged as high as 24 billion. The late Carl Sagan sagely opined, “The size and age of the Cosmos are beyond ordinary human understanding.”

Safe to say, God has been at this awhile!

To the surprise of most folks, John 1.1 documents a biblical beginning that precedes the other biblical beginning of the book of Genesis. Jesus Christ, in a previous persona as “the word,” being together with God from the very start of creation. And even before that! The two “budding” pre-eminent scientists of creation!

Intriguingly, the Bible records god delegated to Jesus nearly all tasks pertaining to man, including the weighty task of building a cosmos for mankind to inhabit: a very big cosmos and no mistake!

Try to imagine the enormous scope of Jesus’ universe-planning/engineering/assembling assignment. Must have taken billions of years and a staff of millions! Revelation 5.11

Or do we exaggerate? Grossly overestimating the need for god’s time, effort and angel-power? The Psalmist of 33.9 poses a far more efficient approach with a vastly shorter delivery schedule, “For he spake, and it was done….”

Well, either way, once the planet was formed, billions of years ensued of seemingly endless emptiness, then long eras of widely varied lifeforms ranging from single cell creatures, to enormous dinosaurs of eons ago, to today’s blue whale, biggest animal ever on earth. But the trophy goes to the largest life-form extant, a single giant underground fungus extending through 2,385 acres (965 hectares), nearly four square miles, in a national forest in the state of Oregon, USA.

With the completion of the planetary platform ready for development/remodeling (Genesis 1.2 Psalm 104.30) the next disastrous 6000 years transpired entirely under the rule of Satan: deceiver, destroyer, father of lies. After billions of years of a planet with no humans aboard, only in the comparative last few moments in time has mankind been introduced. A mere six millennia of god/man interaction ensue including:

- the first humans Adam and Eve, who summarily, stupidly, dumped their creator/provider/savior, abandoned their pristine garden home, and blindly bolted (still stark naked, mind you) into the spiritual unknown! A deathtrap sprung by the gross lie of Satan the devil, commencing 6000 years of human suffering still ongoing even today.

Six millennia have passed since first earthlings Adam and Eve. The bible reveals another millennia still to come before work on earth is done. Revelation 20.4. (lifehopeandtruth.com)

The future! Where away?

Prior to the twentieth century (think 1899), astronomers were aware of only a single galaxy, our own Milky Way, and only one lonely “big blue marble” planet in a habitable zone of its star, our precious planet Earth. Fast forward to our time today. NASA astronomers gazing far out in space now estimate over 100 billion galaxies including billions of planets like ours in “goldilocks” habitable zones from their star, (Think “three bears;” not too hot, not too cold, but just right.) capable of having liquid water and supporting life.

So, after earth is filled with knowledge of the Lord, where to from here?

Think Star Trek! “SPACE! The final frontier. …to boldly go where no man has gone before!”

God’s kings and priests, (holy saints resurrected, dusted off, retrained and promoted Revelation 5.10) then become astronauts; space travelers to transport God’s word and a euphoric society, the biblical Kingdom of God (Revelation 21.4) to the outer reaches of space! To civilize the cosmos!

Isaiah 9.7 astonishingly assures to all mankind:

“Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end.”

Honestly the things you’re talking about are baked into star trek!

IDK if this comparison will help but, Warp 8.5 takes you 2,500 lightyears in 2 years. (actual speed can vary at warp depending on gas density, gravity, atmosphere, EM and magnetic fields, plot, quantum forces and subspace fluctuations. Sort of like an airplane can be slowed down in a denser atmosphere. So if two ships are both at warp 2 but one passes through a nebula, the latter will slow down a bit)

Memory Alpha even has a handy 24th century chart, though it doesn’t mention how exponentially the speed increases every 0.1 after warp 9.0. 9.9 would cut that down to 12 hours, and 9.99 would be 4 hours. 9.999 is 1.2 hours and so on.

Why don’t they always travel at warp 9? well besides environmental effects, there are limitations to power generation, power output, stresses on metal, etc.

Those limitations (engine power, stresses, etc) obviously have to exist within star wars, even outside of whatever limitations there exist to hyperspace itself.

Gonna try rewatching the Star Wars movies (all eight of the ones that actually had plans behind them) with the following criteria in mind:

1. Fast hyperdrives can push you around 500-1000 lightyears per hour.

2. A hyperdrive can operate for about ten hours before burning out/becoming dangerous.

3. The galaxy is about 120,000 lightyears wide, and with its pie-slice occupation, there’s about 50-60,000 lightyears from the Core to the Outer Rim..

The point being: how does this affect the series as a whole?

Obviously, you don’t have to accept every hyperspace jump as being Point A to Point B (e.g., Obi-Wan going to Kamino). It could be Point A to Point D, but why show us Points B and C?), but the question of timing and such becomes a factor.

This is a very good question. As opposed to other characters of this story, which naturally came to me as strangers who walked into a café or pub and started to talk to each other and presented themselves naturally, Jason Master, did not.

As I’m writing this, I am still unsure of his complete physical descriptions. At first, I really thought of him of being your typical war hero, a no-nonsense commander who will steer the ship and its crew into the right direction … but that man never manifested himself.

But I am getting ahead of myself. Let’s start by the beginning and see how Jason Curtis Master came to be. Originally, the Captain was supposed to be named Ronan Hammond. I picked up his name on one of RPG resources list for NPG (Non-Player Character). It had a nice connotation and I was quite happy with it … until I had a chat with one of my friend Colin. During that chat, I threw up in the air, the idea of changing the name of the ship from Algonquin to the Orion. But he advised me against this as it would create too much confusion.

The conversation ended on that and let me thinking. As I keep juggling with the idea and the outcome of this conversation, I came to the conclusion that maybe, just maybe I wanted that type confusion? Master of Orion© is a 4X strategy game in which the player take control of one of the alien race available and try to become master of the galaxy (and the Ancient Orion Legacy). Writing a story about that universe is one thing but, devoid of sense, really, as the story will be presented from a single point of view (in this case the human) pitted against multiple and complex galactic background. How can I write a story that will enthrall the readers without falling onto a “Star Wars” or “Star Trek” cliché? There lies my dilemma.

This reflexion leads me to look at what is the first thing that makes a story: Its heroes! In this mindset, I asked: who will the hero of my story? The answer, although quite evident, surprised me: the hero will be the ship itself!

With this revelation in mind, to name the ship “ORION” was quite logical … but then, reflecting the name “Master of Orion” took a complete different definition. If the game was compelling the players to become the “Master” of Orion; then, in my story, “who” will be the Masters of the Orion? The answer will be its crew! This evidence aside, I needed someone to help me cement the crew around a common goal, a single purpose.

Enter Jason Curtis Master! If you wonder where the name comes from, here it is: Master in reference to the title “Master of Orion”. The Jason part is coming from the mythology of Jason and the Argonauts … considering the journey the Orion will undertake, this first name seemed quite appropriate. The Curtis part was in reference of Curtis Newton (a.k.a. Captain Future) and is a homage to Edmond Hamilton and his work.

But aside these primary facts, Jason Master is still unknown to me. What else do I know from him? Well, he is from Alpha Centauri IV, one of the oldest extrasolar colonies of Earth. Average built and shape. Special physical feature: Purple eyes and grey hair … resulting in a small mutation caused be the consumption of a local crustacean, which is a local delicacy. The introduction of this new food source, along with other environmental factors, caused a slight mutation to 1.2% of the colonists over their fourth or fifth generations. Those afflicted by these traits are viewed with a mix of romantic fascination from the media and abject repulsion by the Gene-pure movements.

Now that I have a few basic characteristics to play with, what about the man himself? At first, I thought of following the standard and classic stereotype … but it did not feel right. To tell you the truth, it was quite frustrating not to be able to get a “clear” picture of who the man was at the beginning of the story… Despite my best efforts, Jason Master keep dodging my inquiries!

After a while, it dawned to me: Jason C. Master was not your stereotypical hero because he was not a hero! If fact, he can be considerate a very “unlikely” hero. Without versing into the other stereotype of the “Used-washed-up-alcoholic” hero, I came to realize that Jason Master got scorched by war … probably got badly injured in it. A war that is still fresh to mankind’s memory.

If this in itself is not new or imaginative, what if the man has lost credibility because he saw something but all of the proofs that got collected was telling the opposite? What if what he saw yet could not prove it cause the man to question his sanity? And what if, as a consequence of this, the Republic’s military command had sent the man on “admin duties” throughout the different outposts and garrisons throughout the Republic … until he is asked to do one last simple mission: to bring the Orion back to Earth, before his retirement, as a favour for his years of services?

An unlikely hero, placed in charge of a very easy mission, as a last hurrah for his career … until destiny strike. It is not much to start with … but it is a beginning.

Star Trek Voyager: Parallax

Chakotay: B’Elanna is a Maquis and in the Maquis sometimes you have to push people around to get things done. Starts right off with a disagreement between Tuvok and Chakotay. Seska and another Maquis suggest to Chakotay that they are ready to “back him” if they want to take control over the ship, he says if he ever hears them talk that way again he’ll personally put them in the brig for mutiny.

You see a glimpse of the kind of commander Chakotay was on his own ship - demanding, fiery, in charge! “I’ve never found your twisted sense of humor very funny, Chakotay” - B’Elanna.

Holodeck energy is not compatible with other energy systems.

Kes suggests the hydroponics bay to grow their own food. Janeway to Kes - “your idea, your project.”

KJ: Maquis don’t have discipline or training. How can I ask them to accept a Maquis as a superior officer without training, etc?

C: No one else on this ship will look out for them like I do.

C: “I have no intention of being your token Maquis officer.” He stands up for his people. C: “I’m trying to help you. I’m sorry you don’t see that.” They argue about who should be chief engineer.

Kes begins to develop a rapport with the Doctor.

KJ asks B’Elanna if she is ready to be chief engineer on a starship. BT: I didn’t want to have anything to do with Starfleet then, and I’m sorry that I have to now.

B’Elanna proves herself at a staff meeting by coming up with an ingenious idea. J/C share a nice moment after where she smiles and winks at him. Maybe she is thinking she needs to trust him more too. Janeway and B’Elanna begin to connect on engineering and science. Janeway is enthusiastic and energized by her work.

This is the famous “Would you have served under me?” question. And also the beginning of J&C referring to the crew as “our crew.”

Meanwhile, back in the Alpha Quadrant...

Tom Riker shows up at DS9 posing as Will Riker and commandeers the Defiant for the Maquis to try and gain intelligence on the Orias System. Even Gul Dukat doesn’t know what’s happening there - it is an Obsidian Order operation. Riker ends up sentenced to life in prison on Cardassia and his other crew members get a Federation trial. Kira promises Riker they will get him out. He kisses her before he beams to the other ship.

Also right around this time, there are peace talks between the Cardassians and the Bajorans, and a peace treaty is signed. Vedek Bareil dies. The Founders think Odo is staying with the solids because of Kira.
