After I finished Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold, I was craving more of that Etrian Odyssey goodness so much that I went ahead and jumped into Etrian Odyssey IV, even though I'd told myself I'd hold off on starting anything new for a while. One aspect I wasn't sure I'd get much out of, though, was creating my own party rather than experiencing a set story mode. That was, of course, foolish; I am having a blast. I put a lot of thought into the backstory and dynamics of my crew and have come to love them deeply. So, indulge me for a while, as I introduce... Guild Trefoil!

Guild Trefoil, from the Latin ‘trifolium’, meaning three-leaved plant. This is another name for the clover plant, and also refers to various clover-inspired designs, such as those on heraldic crests. At the core of the guild are the three childhood friends Clover, Calyx, and Patrick.

Ship: Oxalis, another clover-like plant, colloquially known as a false shamrock. In EOIV, all airships are imitations of an original that fell to the ground long ago.

Clover, Sniper: Trefoil’s leader from the back. A fairly serious person. Orphaned at a young age when her parents set out to be Yggdrasil explorers in Armoroad and never returned. She was raised in a small village, at an orphanage for children left behind by explorer parents. She does not blame her parents; as world economies centre more and more around these mysterious labyrinths, other opportunities dry up. Her parents were doing all they could. However, she does hold a certain distaste for those who treat Yggdrasil exploration like a fun past-time, and for those who seek to profit from it at a higher level. She now sets out for Yggdrasil herself in the hopes of sending funds back to the orphanage. As someone with a high level of attention for detail, she is also in charge of the map.

Calyx, Fortress: Clover’s carefree best friend. She, too, grew up in the orphanage for children whose parents died as explorers. Growing up surrounded by other children with competing needs led her to become patient and reluctant to complain. However, she is also slow to advocate for herself, something which Clover is quick to remedy. Calyx feels deeply indebted to Clover for all of her support throughout their lives.

Patrick, Dancer: childhood friend to both Clover and Calyx, also an orphan. Gay, maybe a little slutty. Definitely likes to have fun. Developed in a different way from Calyx in response to their environment; because he lacked discipline growing up, he isn’t too responsible and doesn’t tend to take things seriously. To everyone’s surprise, it was his idea to head for Tharsis and seek Yggdrasil. Although he pitched it to Clover as a way to help the increasingly poverty-stricken orphanage where they grew up, his real reason is tied to the boy he likes, Leif.

Patrick is named for Saint Patrick, who is strongly associated with the shamrock, a type of clover. The shamrock may have also been associated with the regenerative powers of nature; as a Dancer, Patrick is the party’s only healer. (Portrait: male, purple hair.)

Leif, Nightseeker: with a sword in one hand and a dagger in the other, Leif is Trefoil’s deadliest member. He seems to have had some training in combat before the beginning of the journey. He shared that he intended to head out again once he was healthy; Patrick did not see this ending well and offered to accompany him, soon roping his friends into it as well. Leif is a stoic figure, but occasionally lets his guard down and shows his true tenderness and sensitivity. He grows closer with Patrick by the day, but is nonetheless still guarded with him.

Kura, Runemaster: Leif’s sister, who is even more taciturn than he is. Her greatest show of emotion seen by the party thus far was in the moments they first met, when she begged them to save Leif’s life. Since then, she has shown nary a smile. That said, she is very perceptive. This aids her in combat, as she is talented in reading the enemy, but she can also glean a lot about a person’s nature just by watching them. Like Leif, she comes to the group with prior training, showing great prowess with elemental magic. Also like Leif, she refuses to share anything deeper about herself. She shares her brother’s goals, but will not reveal them.

ivy has a crazy amount of potential for dark magic. in my story setting, humans can't cast spells and are resistant to dark magic, while elves can cast spells but are harmed greatly by dark magic. as a half-elf, ivy has the best of both worlds: she can cast spells and is resistant to the side effects they would otherwise have on her! granted, it takes her more effort to cast spells than a full elf, but with time and practice, she can make her spells much stronger than they can.

bonus: ivy has a tattoo! it's a black trefoil on her left forearm, basically identical to the symbol on the cover of her grimoire:

Day 256

I’ve been trying to finalise my ‘pictionary biography’ piece. I’ve also been making some notes/reflections on the contextual studies and drawing fundamentals that we have done so far. 

Got up kinda early, but it was a real struggle, then my plans were cancelled, which was a bit annoying, but meant I could spend the morning doing those arty things, and start reading A Dance with Dragons 2, After the Feast ( I finished the lovely bones last night, and to be honest... I didn’t like the end of the book, I didn’t want it to end like that )

Then it was work this afternoon, and then straight to a Trefoil Guild meeting ( well rehearsal for our entertainment at the harvest supper next month ) It was a wonderful evening! And then I popped to the supermarket... boy it took what seemed likes ages to find some tea bags that weren’t wrapped in foil or plastic...

•Lest We Forget• • Wow. So... this is the first Remembrance Day we’re celebrating with my grandmother. It’s been a long time tradition to go to either a church service or the celebration at the Butterdome in our guiding and/or scouting uniforms. So this is the hardest “first” I’ve encountered so far. Nona Dorothy McPherson (née Rogers) was an independent, outspoken, stubborn pain in the ass, and the most amazing person I’ve ever met. She served in the RCAF and only retired when she became pregnant with my aunt. She met my grandfather in the Air Force, and was an army wife for several years after she had her two daughters. She was an active member of @girlguidesofcanada both as a leader and then later on as a member of the 2nd Edmonton Trefoil Guild. She was a devout Anglican at St. Michael and All Angels, and volunteered her time and energy to many parts of the church. She was an active swimmer, going at least once a week, and did not slow down until October of last year. Lewy Body Dementia is the second most common dementia and the least talked about. It’s essentially dementia with Parkinson’s symptoms, such as tremors, poor balance, and losing the ability to articulate. My grandmother knew she was dying, and it was heartbreaking to watch her slowly accept that she was heading downhill. But she remained valiant as ever until the last time I saw her. She did not let Lewy kill her. No, she went home in her own time, waving to her loved ones on the other side that were inviting her back home. Today was emotional, to say the least, but after lighting an indigo candle and meditating, it was clear to me that she really is in a better place, and is always with me. I also offered some dried lavender (her favourite smell) and a poppy pin to say thank you. I will remember her and every other veteran or active duty soldier. Well what a wonderfully busy weekend that has been! For those of you outside the UK, it has been the Queen's Diamond Jubilee (70 years on the throne) so on Saturday I was storytelling and glittering girls at the Guiding Jubilee Jambouree out at Crathes Castle. There were Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Rangers, Leaders, Volunteers, Trefoil Guild and SO much entertainment it'd take ages to list it all here! (My own wee Brownie was attending and had an amazing time and fell asleep very tired and happy when we got home!)

Then on Sunday I was delighted to be back at my own Guiding stomping ground and neighbourhood Kirk, Cragiebuckler Church who had an amazing community picnic with storytelling, piping, highland dancing, school choir, crafts, and again so many other things I'd take ages to list.

Both days had beautiful weather and although my outfit relied on my peely wally white Scottish skin as part of my red, white and blue... it was soon rather pink with the sun!

THIRD LAND: Sacred Mountains

In this land, Trefoil are introduced to Kibagami and the Bushi clan. Some Bushi children are suffering from an illness, supposedly a curse. They are warned that it is unknown how contagious this curse really is, but Clover pays no heed, and rushes to hold the suffering child’s hand.

In order to find a cure, it is decided that the Boiling Lizard must be defeated and the Titan’s Heart must be retrieved. In order to achieve this, and inspired by the techniques of the Bushi, the guild decides to diversify their skill set and seek training from others. While Calyx and Patrick find a talented landsknecht and medic to learn from respectively, Leif seeks training from Wufan, out of admiration for the Vessel’s ability to pacify dangerous foes. Kura declines to train with anyone, seemingly unimpressed by explorers outside her own guild. Clover is wrought with indecision: what skills would best aid her guild? How can she keep her friends safe?

Upon the defeat of the Boiling Lizard, the Titan’s Heart is found, but the tablet that opens the way forward is missing. Nonetheless, the children are cured and there is a great celebration, with much praise heaped upon Trefoil. Patrick and Calyx enjoy this attention the most, with Leif being quite flummoxed. Clover is just happy about the kids. As for Kura, she seems even quieter than usual.

When Whirlwind kidnaps the Medium, everyone is shocked, except for Kura. She got bad vibes from him from their first meeting two lands ago, and knew something was up when he showed up after the Boiling Lizard’s defeat, guessing that he had taken the tablet they needed. When pressed, she says she did not speak up about her suspicions because she knew he would open up the path forward anyway and did not want to risk losing the tablet altogether by confronting him. Even Leif is unnerved by her pragmatism. They end up having a heated argument. Kura questions Leif’s devotion to their goal, and he realizes that she’s right. He can no longer think of their goal as the most important thing to him. If he had to give it up to keep the Medium, or any of his loved ones, safe, he would do it. Kura is rattled by this, and says nothing.

The Pinoso and District Trefoil Guild are part of the Guide Movement. They meet the last Wednesday of the month and new members are always welcome. Activities include, guest speakers, meals & visits out etc. together with fund raising events. Orias Trefoil - “...none of us can escape what’s coming.”

Years ago, he doesn’t remember how long back now, Orias and his partner were famed and notorious art thieves. They robbed museums and mansions anywhere they could, filling their small shared apartment with the finest of goods and selling whatever they didn’t like or couldn’t fit to afford food and rent.

Those halcyon days of crime and laughter and what Orias assumed was love didn’t last. During their last big job together, Orias’ partner betrayed him, bringing the Seraph down on him while he was inside the target mansion. Orias managed to escape, just barely, but while injured and fleeing the city, he had the misfortune of stumbling into a bandit scheme. His body was found face down on the bank of the river. His soul was pulled elsewhere by a watching demon.

The demon, Epoch, had seen the betrayal and this misfortune, and saw an opportunity. It needed a physical connection to Tyria to achieve its goal of godhood, and Orias was dying. If he agreed, the two could work together, Orias could return to life and seek revenge, and Epoch could borrow his skill to seek out and steal the remains of Abaddon’s scattered magic in order to replace its murdered god and reach ascension. Orias, left with a choice between working with a demon or remaining trapped in its pocket of the realm of torment, opted to return to life and deal with the consequences later. He now works to gather the scattered magic and artifacts of the dead gods Abaddon and Balthazar, each item adding to Epoch’s power. His body remains buried in a criminal’s grave, and his current form, mist essence made tangible, is tied to a demon. His only hope is to grant Epoch the power it seeks and hope it shows him some sort of favor.

Orias moves slowly around the battlefield, stepping almost casually from location to location through mist portals. He hits with earthshaking force and tears holes into the realm of torment, calling minor spirits to his aid. He is always calm and collected, injuries leaking mist essence and sap in equal measure until they stitch themselves back together. When a killing blow is dealt or the form becomes unusable, Epoch tears it apart and rebuilds Orias again over the course of a few days, sending him back to continue his work. He’s a force to be reckoned with, but he prefers to avoid combat when possible, frequently fleeing when spotted. He still likes to steal lovely things, filling his new home with them along side the objects he steals for the demon. Epoch, for its part, enjoys taking Orias’ body out for joyrides, knowing he’ll be the one to deal with the consequences come the morning rather than it.

(end notes: I hate this man so fucking much (affectionate) I never know what to do with him, either in game or just with his plot, but he’s far too old and far too pretty to delete or change. I’m stuck with this fucker. Just like he’s stuck with epoch. please give me an excuse to rp him)

Day 226 and 227

Yesterday was a rather long and busy, but wonderful day. I took the day off from work and went to Leamington Spa with my Trefoil Guild unit, where we met up with another unit too have lunch, and then they took us for a bit of a guided walk around the park and some of the sights, before we had tea, and most of us had cake. Then it was to Nics to watch Game of Thrones, where I was able to do a little bit of colouring.

Today it was a cream to with Trefoil and a couple of other local Trefoil units, which was really nice, as I was able to make my promise as Trefoil member, and was enrolled by the Chairman for the County, which is kinda a big deal! Now to arrange to do my Voyage award ( It’s like Baden-Powell/Duke of Edingburgh but for older people )

Very tired now, so glad to be in. Have done a self-portrait this evening, from an old photograph... Not perfect, but I’m improving with every one, I think. Now, time to stretch...
