The condition of fallen radhachura trees on the boundary walls of our house. With the municipality not doing any private house works now, getting labourers to cut down fallen trees is a daunting task. This has resulted in feuds between neighbours as they seek to cut down the fallen trees without seeking permission. Amidst this #cycloneamphan chaos I went to take the last photographs of this tree which have been a solace to me. Seeing it in this state for the last couple of days from my balcony felt like I am living with a corpse. So, when the final preparations are being made I came down to take one last look. You lived gently my dear and served many. You served many a bulbuls and woodpeckers - and a woman broken and depressed. I am sorry I couldn't do that for you. What a way this guy is showing. Fasting and protesting for a environment friendly campus for the 7th week in Presidency University. I feel ashamed that I didn't stand up for this when I was in Presidency. I feel proud of to be a Presidencian. At last found something to be proud of in my Alma mater. A true Presidencian at last. Breathing Roots Those have been to Sundarban or any other mangrove area have seen this. And those of us who remember this from our basic biology class - these are pneumatophores or the breathing Roots of mangrove. The mangrove are a special group of trees or plants which forms the basis of a difficult ecosystem. It's not just sundari alone, a whole new types of mangrove trees are their having these modified roots and stems performing special functions. The slanted stems you see are actually stilt roots which hold these marshy saline soil together and give support to the plant to live. The breathing Roots on the other hand. Go down into the muddy soil and come up erect into the air about 2-3 inches. These roots of air sacs which let them exchange air and breath. Together these 2 roots of the mangroves makes life possible in Sundarbans. This clay muddy marshy waters and land is difficult to survive regular life but the wildlife it sustains forms the basis of ecology. It can only survive here and with these trees gone, the land will be gone and so will be the various species living in and above the water. That's how vital Sundarban is.
