Treefort Roaming 2024 - Wednesday and Thursday
It’s back, that time of year when the music permeates all of amazing downtown Boise for five days. Yes, it is my favorite time of year and so far it hasn’t disappointed.
This year is a bit of a different approach. Instead of just roaming, I am much more disciplined as my time is far more limited. Being a dog dad means tons of dog love but also a lot of responsibility, so the 12 hour days at Treefort are no more. It’s a worthy trade-off.
Still, there have been a few surprises that one can’t help but come across while enjoying one of the best festivals in the U.S.
Let’s start with Wednesday.
Wednesday
With my dog, Brahms, in mind, I didn’t head out quite late and only stayed a few hours, but those hours were filled with several great acts.
While heading to the Treefort Music Hall, I found myself diverted to something that just sounded fun. And it was. The Boise Brewing stage is a super cool stage that has had some excellent acts. Buddy Crime is undoubtedly such an act.
A single musician, Louisville, Kentucky based Buddy Crime is backed by prerecorded hard thumping electro-pop to which he adds his lyrical and guitar skills. He’s high energy, puts out some incredible sarcastic vocals, and keeps the audience moving. The crowd was absolutely engaged and I look forward to seeing him again someday.
While I truly desired to stay late and see excellent Boise musicians, Magic Sword, it’d be an early night with only one more act on tap, Neko Case, at the main stage.
Neko Case has been labeled as “alt-country” or indie-rock,” but she defies the labels, becoming almost otherworldly and emitting a chilling vibe in songs such as “Hold on, Hold on.” With haunting sound and lyrics, she grabs you, and you can’t walk away mid-song. Her long career in music has yielded a large amount of work, and she deserves your listen. Check her out on your music service.
Thursday
An annual tradition is watching the first Gonzaga NCAA Tournament game at the excellent Owyhee Tavern while eating a steak. Afterward, it was past eight, and it was time to get out there.
While I only caught the last three songs of Australia’s Blusher at the Treefort Music Hall, it was a blast, making me wish I’d been there for the whole thing. An electro-pop infused experience from three female amazing singers made it part girl band and part high energy indie. Let’s just call it what it is, a ton of fun.
Look for Blusher to be touring the U.S. this next year, as they told me they just got their visas and will be living in L.A.
Things mellowed quite a bit with French Cassettes, but they are a phenomenal band putting out their own harmony-driven pop, with a sound best (but very loosely) compared to Vampire Weekend. Check out their pre-release song, “Benzene.” It’s fabulous.
Then there is Karina Rykeman, who recently dropped her debut album, Joyride. There’s nothing like Karina. She is an incredible bassist, her guitarist is phenomenal, and her lyrics are silky smooth. In many ways, I felt like I did when at a Khruangbin concert but without all the reverb.
Karina is high-energy and keeps everyone dancing, and the crowd loves her. Listen to her track “Joyride” right now!
And that’s it. It was another early evening with absolutely amazing bands. This is why Treefort is incredible; you’re constantly discovering new music to fall in love with.

of Montreal Announces 'Lady On The Cusp' out May 17 | “Yung Hearts Bleed Free” Single/Video | Headline Tour
Kevin Barnes, Of Montreal, a musical chameleon who has long called Georgia home, first set foot in the vibrant college-rock scene of Athens in 1996. Embracing an ethos of fluidity in both gender and genre, Barnes has crafted complex, delightful records that sparkle with a radical brilliance, powered by personal strife and exuberance. With a career spanning nearly three decades, Barnes and of Montreal have left an indelible mark on stages, televisions, dance floors, stereos, and within the political landscape, both locally and internationally. Now, as they prepare to bid farewell to Athens, of Montreal heralds the arrival of their latest studio venture, Lady On The Cusp, slated for release on May 17 via Polyvinyl Record Co. This album promises to be a magnificent culmination of the band’s explorations, serving as Barnes’ swansong from their Georgia roots as they embrace a new chapter in the snow-capped embrace of southern Vermont. “Lady On The Cusp” emerges from a period of transition, capturing Barnes and their partner, musician Christina Schneider, as they poised themselves for relocation. The album weaves together a rich tapestry of introspection and forward-looking optimism, all presented through Barnes’ signature prism of eclectic pop. The 10-track odyssey navigates a range of emotions—humor and melancholy, sensuality and introspection, levity and depth—ushering listeners into new territories of thought and sound. Leading the charge is the effervescent single “Yung Hearts Bleed Free,” a track that pays homage to Barnes’ influences with a mix of self-deprecation and admiration for the libertine and the lost. Released alongside a captivating video, the song embodies a candid reflection on the imperfections and beauty of a life lived without restraint, marking an exciting pivot point in Barnes’ illustrious career. Lady On The Cusp tracklisting: 1. Music Hurts the Head 2. 2 Depressed 2 Fuck 3. Rude Girl on Rotation 4. Yung Hearts Bleed Free 5. Soporific Cell 6. I Can Read Smoke 7. PI$$ PI$$ 8. San Fermin- Arms (Better Company Records)
San Fermin- Arms (Better Company Records)
Ellis Ludwig-Leone’s band San Fermin is back with their fifth album. Nine songs filled with heartbreak from not one, but two breakups Ellis experienced. The emotions truly rise up on this album through the music and the lyrics sung by alternating vocalists Allen Tate and Claire Wellin. The first track, “Weird Environment,” has a rockin’ guitar melody resembling New Order in parts. Allen sings the most toe-tapping song on the album filled with those heartfelt lyrics I mentioned. “Burned my life down to the ground. Emptied out the Hungry Ghost. Wrote a sad song to get it out. If it helped, I didn’t notice.” The song builds to a punch later with driving instrumentation. Here’s the video:
youtube
Next up, “Didn’t Want You To,” Claire steps in to sing with a subtle twang, “I’ll find my way; Out of this place soon; If you didn’t want me, I didn’t want you to.” A beauty of a song complete with added horns. You can watch the video here:
youtube
Track 3, “Can't Unsee It,” brings Allen back on vocals with a gorgeous song that kind of reminds me of Lord Huron or The National for some reason. Love the horns on this one as well. Next is the title track, “Arms,” a bouncy piano ballad where Allen’s vocals shine here. A beautiful guitar solo adds to its lyrics. “Oh, I’m falling for you so madly; As soon as I leave, I just want to come back; And I know this is going to end badly; Cuz it feels like you are the one thing that I have; And who am I to hold you when you have arms for the whole world?” Here’s the video:
youtube
Track 5, “Makes Me Want You,” Claire takes over with multiple layers of her vocal tracks. Along with gorgeous piano and trumpet, this “makes me want (the song) more.” Claire is also lead vocals on the next track, “My Love Is A Loneliness.” The third single off of the album is one you’re sure to sing along with in no time. I know I have. More multiple-layered vocals that will move any listener to tears. Powerful imagery also in the lyrics: “If everyone leaves and everyone dies; It’s just a question of when; If everyone cheats and everyone lies; Rather it me than them; If the worst should happen; And it will, and will again; I will still be standing; With loneliness, my friend; To start again.” The video can be seen here:
youtube
Next up, “Useful Lies,” is a beautiful, soft acoustic guitar melody sung by Allen. And then wait for it, here come the strings, the harmonies, and the horns that make this song truly soar! Track 8, “Wasting on Me,” Allen and Claire’s harmonies really blend here on this more upbeat song. The beauty of the boy/girl vocals really makes this one stand out. “Never meant to lead you down a road of sadness. But we’ve arrived where there’s nothing to be done. Could pretend there was a moment when we lost it. But we were running different races from the gun.” The album ends with “You Owe Me.” It’s back to Claire on lead vocals with a soft, sad piano-driven melody. In comes the brass that really helps capture the mood. Emotional heartbreak here with, “And I had to get my stuff out of your parents’ place. Your father wouldn’t even meet me in my eye.” The album was recorded at Better Company Studios in Brooklyn by none other than Allen Tate, the male vocalist. A national tour begins in the middle of March(see below). The last time I saw San Fermin was ten years ago at FRZN FEST in Madison. You don’t want to miss this album performed live; I know I won’t. Oakland, CA -- Tanukichan, the project helmed by Hannah von Loon, shared their new single “Take Care” from their upcoming record GIZMO (out March 3). The lush track spans just under 4 minutes long and has the distinct shoegaze essence of this project. From the dreaminess of the vocals to the melds of the instrumental layers, “Take Care” captures the vulnerability of feeling isolated and alone. But there’s also a gentleness to the track - that feeling of still wanting to find or renew a connection and baby steps it takes to reopen yourself again.
GIZMO by Tanukichan
On the track, van Loon shared "I wrote 'Take Care' when I was feeling especially depressed. I felt so down and bummed out that I started cutting people out of my life. I felt like whenever I had interactions with others I was such a drag that I would bring down the mood. I had nothing I wanted to talk about so I just cut off from people. It was painful to feel isolated and I craved companionship or friendship even more, but I knew that someday I would come out of it, and hopefully we would be friends again."

Sometimes it’s geopolitics and sometimes it’s celebrity gossip but it’s always hilarious. In January we have comedians @admpasi @ronniemackaroni and @mynipsdontlie taking the stage. Ticket are $15 and $17 at the door. Link in the bio. Lee H. Tillman (@freetillman) started his comedy career in Los Angeles, CA performing around Southern California. He is now based in Portland, OR where he performs all over the Pacific Northwest. He has performed at comedy festivals all over the United States including the Burbank Comedy Festival at Flappers where he was awarded “Best of Fest”, the Omaha Comedy Festival, and the Motor City Comedy Festival. While he has a low-key delivery, please do not mistake his laid-back delivery for complacency. There are surprises at every turn. Adam Pasi is a Portland comic who pretends to be from Seattle so he can confuse his friends on social media. He's afraid of dolls, loves his mom, and in 2016 he was crowned Portland's 3rd funniest person (he won first in 2019 and 2020 but he thinks bragging about 3rd is funnier) In the words of Billy Crystal, comedy is like taking somebody by the hand, guiding them through a dark forest and right when you get to the light where they feel safe, you smack em in the face with a shovel. That’s the epitome of what Ronnie Macaroni does. Neeraj Srinivasan is a first-generation Indian-American comedian from Boise now residing in Portland. He’s a co-host of Portland’s own DOUGH and PREACH comedy shows, and has performed at venues all over the West Coast such as Helium Comedy Club, Revolution Hall, The Comedy Store, and The Hollywood Improv. Neeraj was also dubbed one of Portland Mercury’s “Undisputable Geniuses of Comedy” in addition to being featured in IFC’s “Portlandia,” Treefort Music Festival, and Pacific Crest Comedy Festival.
