The Sign of Four: The Strange Story of Jonathan Small (Part One of Two)
I will split this in two parts as I've got a lot to cover here.
CW for discussions of nasty prison conditions.
The depth of the Thames is about 6.5 metres at low tide in Woolwich, near to the Plumstead Marshes as they were then. However, the river has strong currents and very little visibility, so it would be a risky operation even with 2024 diving technology for some rather small objects.
The rupee originally was a silver coin dating back to ancient times in India, becoming something of a standard currency during the Mughal period. The East India Company introduced paper rupees and while there was an attempt by the British to move their territory to the pound sterling, they soon gave up, minting their own rupees with the British monarch's head on. The currency was also non-decimal. India retained the currency post-independence and went decimal as well.
Mangrove trees are very common in equatorial coastline regions - they can remove salt from the water, which would kill many other trees.
Prisoners set to the Andaman Islands penal colony were forced to work nine to ten hours a day to construct the new settlement, while in chains. Cuts from poisonous plants and friction ulcers from the chains would often get infected, resulting in death.
The convict huts on Ross Island were two-storey affairs, with the bottom as a kitchen and took area, the prisoners sleeping on the upper floor. Designed this way as an anti-malaria measure, they however leaked and the prisoners themselves were constantly damp from the rainfall, offering them little protection from the mosquitoes in any event.
Ague is an obsolete term for malaria; adults experience chills and fever in cycles.
The British would conduct experiments with quinine as a malaria treatment by force-feeding it to the prisoners. This caused severe side effects.
The British would make use of locals as warders, who wore sashes and carried canes. I'd imagine they could probably be quite brutal.
Pershoe is a small town on the River Avon near Worcester. It has a railway station with an hourly service to London, taking just under two hours today.
"Chapel-going" in this context means that the people attended a non-conformist church i.e. not one part of the Church of England.
"Taking the Queen's/King's shilling" was a historical term for joining the armed forces - for the army this was officially voluntary, but sailors could be forcibly recruited, being known as "press-ganged" until 1815. You would be given the shilling upon initial enlistment or tricked into taking it via it being slipped into your opaque beer. You would return the shilling on your formal attestation and then receive a bounty which could be pretty substantial in terms of the average wage, although a good amount of that would then be spent on your uniform. Some enlisted, deserted and then reenlisted multiple times to get multiple payments. The practice officially stopped in 1879, but the slang term remains.
The 3rd Buffs refers to the latter 3rd Battalion, Buffs (East Kent Regiment), a militia battalion that existed from 1760 to 1953, although it effectively was finished in 1919. However, in reality, they did not go to India to deal with the rebellion, instead staying in Great Britain to cover for the regular regiments who did.
The British never formally adopted the Prussian "goose step" instead going for the similar, but less high-kicking, slow march.
The musket would possibly have been the muzzle-loaded Enfield P53, a mass-produced weapon developed at the Royal Small Arms Factory in Enfield. It was itself was the trigger of the Indian Rebellion in 1857 due to the grease used in the cartridges. They would also be heavily used in the American Civil War on both sides, especially the Confederate one as they smuggled a lot of them, with only the Springfield Model 1861 being more widely used. As a result, they are highly sought after by re-enactors. The British used them until 1867, when they switched to the breech-loading Snider-Enfield, many of the P53s being converted.
The crocodile would likely have been a gharial, which mainly eat fish. Hunting and loss of habitat has reduced their numbers massively, with the species considered "Critically Endangered" by the IUCN.
"Coolie" is a term today considered offensive that was used to describe low-wage Indian or Chinese labourers who were sent around the world, basically to replace emancipated slaves. Indentured labourers, basically - something the US banned (except as a riminal punishment) along with slavery in 1865. In theory they were volunteers on a contract with rights and wages, however abuses were rife. Indentured labour would finally be banned in British colonies in 1917.
Indigo is a natural dark blue dye extracted from plants of the Indigofera genus; India produced a lot of it. Today, the dye (which makes blue jeans blue) is mostly produced synthetically.
I have covered the "Indian Mutiny" as the British called it here in my post on "The Crooked Man".
The Agra Fort dates back to 1530 and at 94 acres, it was pretty huge by any standards. Today, much of it is open to tourists (foreigners pay 650 rupees, Indians 50), although there are parts that remain in use by the Indian Army and are not for public access.
"Rajah" meaning king, referred to the many local Hindu monarchs in the Indian subcontinent; there were also Maharajahs or "great kings", who the British promoted loyal rajahs to the rank of. The Muslim equivalent was Nawab. However, a variety of other terms existed. The East India Company and the Raj that succeeded them used these local rulers to rule about a half their territory and a third of the population indirectly, albeit under quite a bit of influence from colonial officials. These rulers were vassals to the British monarch; they would collect taxes and enforce justice locally, although many of the states were pretty small (a handful of towns in some cases) and so they contracted this out to the British. As long as they remained loyal, they could get away with nearly anything.
562 of these rulers were present at the time of Indian independence in 1947. Effectively abandoned by the British (Louis Mountbatten, the last Viceroy, sending out contradictory messages), nearly all of them were persuaded to accede to the new India, where the nationalists were not keen on them, with promises they could keep their autonomy if they joined, but if not, India would not help them with any rebellions. Hyderabad, the wealthiest of the states, resisted and was annexed by force. The ruler of Jammu and Kashmir joined India in exchange for support against invading Pakistani forces, resulting in a war. A ceasefire agreement was reached at the beginning of 1949, with India controlling about two-thirds of the territory; the ceasefire line, with minor adjustments after two further wars in 1965 and 1971, would become known as the Line of Control, a dotted line on the map that is the de facto border and one of the tensest disputed frontiers on the planet.
India and Pakistan initially allowed the princely rulers to retain their autonomy, but this ended in 1956. In 1971 and 1972 respectively, their remaining powers and government funding were abolished.
Many of the former rulers ended up in a much humbler position, others retained strong local influence and a lot of wealth. The Nizam of Hyderbad, Mir Osman Ali Khan was allowed to keep his personal wealth and title after the annexation in 1948 - he had been the richest man in the world during his rule and used a 184-carat diamond as a paperweight, at least until he realised its actual value. The current "pretender", Azhmet Jah, has worked as a cameraman and filmmaker in Hollywood, including with Steven Spielberg.

What’s Lost is Found
Ch.4 Memories
Other Chapters
That night at the sheds, Screech asked the Avon what to expect along the old line.
"It was beautiful," Avon said wistfully. "After you leave the yard it climbs up the winding hills to the north. The trees are old, and you couldn't see anything but the forest. You pass the junction to Argol at Lloergan." She paused, closing her eyes to savor the memory.
"Lloergan...Moonlight. It was more a village than a town, blending in with the forest. It was so easy to forget it was a only few miles from Uman. In the night all you could see was light from the moon and the light from the homes among the trees. I loved to see 2920 shoot past with the evening express, a blur of sound, smoke, and light...The line kept climbing from Lloergan, and just as you began to wonder if the forest would ever end, you burst through to the tops of the Aurchel Cliffs. You could see out across the water for miles. We loved to whistle to the Liners headed to, and from Uman."
Avon fell quiet, lost in memories.
"2920 was my predecessor?" Guinevere asked gently.
"Saint David." Avon confirmed, "Named for the Patron Saint of Wales, he worked until the line to Glain was closed. With half the line closed the other railway considered our express services unnecessary and transferred 2920 elsewhere." She groaned as she shifted.
"You're not overdoing it are you?" Guinevere's eyes locked in the 2-4-0 like a hawk.
Avon sighed in exasperation, "No more than anyone else Abbey.  I'm just not used to the summer season yet "
The star almost looked convinced until Screech spoke up, " Of course, it's certainly not the fact you're covering two engines' trains during our heaviest season."
Avon shot Screech a betrayed look as Abbey narrowed her eyes at the smaller tender engine.
"I could hel..." Enid began only to be interrupted by Avon.
"No! The railway needs those beach trains and you know it. If anything you two need help handling the crowds."
"And who delivers those crowds to them?" Guinevere asked ominously.
Avon glared at the smug Eldritch giant.
"I do but..."
"And Miss Morgan says this is our heaviest season yet?"
"Yes., but..."
"Then you need help." Blaidd piped up from her corner.
The 2-4-0's betrayed expression shot the other direction.
"There is no one to help." She wheeshed anxiously. "Screech is the only one of us who isn't struggling with her loads as is."
"Then that settles it," Guinevere said, steaming curling around her with satisfaction.
The whisper happily cackled as the trap sprung.
"Settles what?!?"
"Screech will assist your trains when her schedule permits."
Avon's jaw dropped, "what? No, but..."
Screech raised an eyebrow, "Do you think assisting you beyond me little one?" She allowed her voice to echo, distorting the air around them as it rang from a thousand angles.
"but, but...you hate pulling pass...."
Avon trailed off as Screech gently pressed her nose with a tendril.
"I prefer dealing with the nuisances to seeing you damage yourself when I am perfectly capable of scaring passengers into compliance."
Avon's eyes darted around, looking for backup, finding none, she sighed in defeat. "You lot are arranging this with Miss Morgan."
"How fortunate that she has already been informed and  reorganized my schedule to fit."
Avon seemed to deflate, "I hate all of you."
"Of course you do," Guinevere said mock soothingly.

Storms roll east after slamming South; 10 deaths reported (AP) A large storm system took aim at the Northeast on Friday, threatening heavy snow and coastal flooding after heavy winds and possible tornadoes damaged homes and buildings, left thousands without power and caused 10 deaths in a wide swath of the South and Midwest. Three people were killed by falling trees in Alabama as severe weather swept through the state. In Mississippi, a woman died inside her SUV after a rotted tree branch struck her vehicle, and in Arkansas a man drowned after he drove into high floodwaters. News outlets reported two people died in Tennessee when trees fell on them. Three weather-related deaths also were reported in Kentucky in three different counties as storms with straight-line winds moved through the state. The National Weather Service in Louisville called the storm Friday “powerful and historic” with peak wind gusts between 60-80 mph (96-128 kph).
Technology Replaces Even The Repo Guy (Car and Driver) While companies like Google and Amazon are looking into autonomous driving technology in order to operate self-driving taxis and freight vehicles, Ford Motors is implementing the technology for a different purpose: repossessing cars. Recently, a Ford patent was formally published outlining a new suite of features in the field of vehicle repos, including a fully self-driving system that could have repo’d Fords drive themselves back to the dealer. The patent includes full- and semi-autonomous systems to aid in car repossession, alongside a few other features that might make holding onto a repo’d vehicle just plain exhausting. For example, Ford could remotely shut off an owner’s access to air conditioning, radio, or cruise control, or even play annoying sounds through the car stereo to ward off an owner from using their car. The systems could even escalate to fully turning off the car’s ability to drive. Most of these intermediary steps would be taken before the car actually up and drives itself back to a dealership.
Argentina inflation seen speeding in 2023, central bank poll shows (Reuters) Argentina’s inflation rate is seen hitting 99.9% in 2023, speeding up from last year’s rate and topping previous estimates which saw a slightly slower rise, according to a central bank poll of analysts released Friday. The forecast, which is 2.3 percentage points above the 2023 rate projected in last month’s poll, comes amid a prolonged financial and social crisis in one of Latin America’s largest economies. The annual inflation rate in 2022 hit 94.8%, according to Argentina’s statistics institute.
In Britain, ‘warm hubs’ emerge to beat soaring energy costs (AP) On a blustery late-winter day in Shakespeare’s birthplace, the foyer of the Other Place theater is a cozy refuge. Visitors are having meetings over coffee, checking emails, writing poetry, learning to sew. It looks and feels like an arty café in the picturesque streets of Stratford-upon-Avon, but it’s a “warm hub” set up by the Royal Shakespeare Company drama troupe to welcome people struggling to heat their homes because of sky-high energy prices. Warm hubs have sprouted across Britain by the thousands this winter as soaring food and energy prices drive millions to turn down the thermostat or skimp on hot meals. Research by the opposition Labour Party counted almost 13,000 such hubs, funded by a mix of charities, community groups and the government and nestled in libraries, churches, community centers and even a tearoom at King Charles III’s Highgrove country estate.
U.N. Russian Official Warns of Nuclear Clashes (Foreign Policy) Speaking at a U.N. conference in Geneva on the subject of nuclear disarmament, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov warned that western support for Ukraine could lead to a nuclear conflict. Ryabkov blamed “the U.S. and NATO policy of fueling the conflict in Ukraine” and warned “increasing involvement in the military confrontation is fraught with a direct military clash of nuclear powers with catastrophic consequences.” That Russian President Vladimir Putin suspended Russian participation in the 2010 New START nuclear treaty was, Ryabkov stressed, a response to this involvement. Ryabkov did say that Russia would continue to respect caps on nuclear weapons under the treaty.
Heavy fighting as Russians advance in Bakhmut (Washington Post) The battle for Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine continued to rage Friday, with Russian forces “constantly hitting the city randomly with artillery, Grads and mortars,” Ukrainian soldier Yuriy Syrotyuk, 46, who is stationed in the north of the city with Ukraine’s Fifth Independent Assault Brigade, said by phone. But Ukrainian forces were still in control of some parts of Bakhmut and have not been ordered to retreat, Syrotyuk said, despite new claims Friday from Yevgeniy Prigozhin, the leader of Russia’s Wagner mercenary group, that Russian forces have “practically surrounded” the city. Other Ukrainian soldiers said that further reinforcements were being deployed to Bakhmut, even as some specialized units were told to redeploy to long-planned fallback positions. Ukrainian troops have pleaded for additional support from the West to push back the Russians from the city, whose value has become largely symbolic over the past months as the Ukrainians have resisted ceding territory in the east. One of the greatest challenges continues to be a lack of ammunition.
The E.U. Offered to Embrace Ukraine, but Now What? (NYT) When the European Union offered Ukraine a path to membership last year, it was in many ways an emotional response to the Russian invasion. Leaders were under pressure to show solidarity with the victims of aggression, even though many opposed the idea. Since then, preoccupied with passing sanctions, scrounging up aid and scouring military inventories to send Ukraine weapons, few in Europe have focused seriously on what that commitment might actually mean. But this is a courtship with consequences for the future, not only for Ukraine’s aspirations and survival, but also for Europe’s own security and finances. Ukrainian membership would reshape the bloc and its relationship with a post-conflict Russia. Tensions are already growing between Europe’s desire to maintain its tough requirements and Ukraine’s demand for quick entry into a promised land that has given hope to the embattled country. European Union officials like Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, have been slow-walking expectations for Ukraine, a country that nearly all agree is fundamentally unprepared to join.
Afghan Women, Banned From Working, Can’t Provide for Their Children (WSJ) Since toppling the U.S.-backed government in 2021, the Taliban has introduced a series of restrictions aimed at squeezing women out of public life in Afghanistan. Girls over sixth grade can no longer go to school, Afghan universities no longer accept female students and women are barred from most public-sector jobs. The employment ban is deepening a humanitarian crisis and putting the livelihood of whole families at risk. Widows are especially vulnerable.
Protests break out in Iran over schoolgirl illnesses (Reuters) Worried parents protested in Iran's capital Tehran and other cities on Saturday over a wave of suspected poison attacks that have affected schoolgirls in dozens of schools, according to Iranian news agencies and social media videos. The so-far unexplained illnesses have affected hundreds of schoolgirls in recent months. Iranian officials believe the girls may have been poisoned and have blamed Tehran's enemies. The country's health minister has said the girls have suffered "mild poison" attacks and some politicians have suggested the girls could have been targeted by hardline Islamist groups opposed to girls' education. Sickness affected more than 30 schools in at least 10 of Iran's 31 provinces on Saturday. Videos posted on social media showed parents gathered at schools to take their children home and some students being taken to hospitals by ambulance or buses.
The proud Pakistani tradition of feeding the hungry is strained as food prices soar (NPR) Since the pandemic, Pakistan has been battered by calamities that have pushed up the price of food and fuel: Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and two events made more extreme by climate change: a spring heatwave that shriveled harvests, then summer floods that drowned them. Now there’s an economic crisis so dire, the country risks default. Inflation reached nearly 25% last year, but the figure conceals dramatic variations. In poorer rural areas, prices of food rose even higher. Now, the World Food Programme expects that 5.1 million people are likely to be a step away from famine-levels of hunger by the end of March—an increase of 1.1 million people from the previous quarter. “That number is frightening,” says Chris Kaye, the Pakistan country director of the WFP. And it has put a proud Pakistani tradition of feeding the hungry under strain just when it is needed the most.
Why are China’s tech leaders still disappearing if the crackdown is over? (Washington Post) China’s legendary tech dealmaker Bao Fan hasn’t been seen for almost three weeks. Stock prices have plunged for his investment bank China Renaissance, once known for brokering the country’s biggest tech mergers, and all it has said is that Bao is “assisting the government of the People’s Republic of China with an investigation.” Another titan of China’s tech world, Alibaba founder Jack Ma, was spotted days ago in Melbourne, Australia. While keeping a low profile since regulators put the brakes on his planned record-breaking IPO after he criticized them publicly, Ma has also turned up in Spain and Japan. Bao and Ma aren’t the only tech leaders in China who have vanished from public view seemingly at the peak of their influence. Many of the country’s top business executives and influencers—bankers, property developers, movie stars like Fan Bingbing and e-commerce superseller Austin Li—have gone missing without explanation as their power and influence have grown. Some were later hit with fines and accused of offenses like tax evasion or fraud. Officials have said that the crackdown on the tech industry, which saw a flurry of regulations torpedo the influence of companies from gaming to online education, has ended. But Bao Fan’s disappearance—the latest evidence of the government’s willingness to rein in even the most powerful executives—has shaken investor confidence and undermined Beijing’s insistence it supports the private sector.
World Bank: Quake caused damage worth $5.1 billion in Syria (AP) The World Bank said Friday that Syria sustained an estimated $5.1 billion in damages in last month’s massive earthquake that struck southeast Turkey and northern parts of the war-torn country. The quake killed at least 50,000 people, including about 6,000 in Syria, according to the United Nations. Tens of thousands are still missing and hundreds of thousands were left homeless. In a report released Friday, the World Bank says the level of the damage in Syria is about 10% of the country’s gross domestic product. Syria’s northern province of Aleppo was the most severely hit region, accounting for 45% of the total damages in Syria and amounting to about $2.3 billion in damages. Also badly hit was the rebel-held region in the northwest, home to some 4.6 million people, many of them previously displaced by Syria’s war.

We have provided wedding photography and videography service to the friendly and intimate British bride & groom with their little angels in Teddington, South-West London last December with the wedding theme - Winter Wonderland. http://www.thesnapshotcafe.com/ This wedding was our another Christmas story wedding with special family warmth in the atmosphere while taking the beautiful couple's photos with two of their children in front of the classic fancy Christmas tree. The wedding is an emotional one with lots of involvements from the mother of the bride, who loves both the bride and the groom a lot. https://www.facebook.com/TheSnapshotCafeweddingphotographervideographer/ Winter weddings are more different than summer time weddings for us because of a cold weather outside and the sun goes down quickly. We take more photos with artificial light sources than summer time natural day light photo and video shoots. The winter photos may look a bit more punchy and contrast, because of the directional light created deliberately. Their wedding church ceremony was held in Saint Mary with Saint Alban Church, Teddington and their wedding banquet was held in Glenmore House wedding venue, Surbiton. At the end of the day we took beautiful photos and videos, especially when their son was with them. How one LCO uses Spraye to maximize route density
If you're in the Pensacola area, then you have probably already experienced the need for having to remove a tree or stump or getting your tree's trimmed. The cost of tree removal varies depending on a few factors, such as: - The type of tree that needs to be removed - The size of the tree - The location of the tree - The condition of the tree Pensacola Tree Removal offers competitive pricing for our tree removal services. For a full list of services Tree removal services visit https://treeservicespensacola.com/tree-removal-pensacola/ for a fast, friendly and reliable quote that you can count on. This will help not only beautify your property but also is the safest way to do it. Photo: Spraye Jim Beveridge, owner of Yards Done Right in Westlake, Ohio, started using Spraye software to schedule his routes as a beta tester. A fellow lawn care operator (LCO) developed the software. Beveridge runs a two-person crew with his wife, Judy. Yards Done Right is a primarily residential company that does lawn fertilization, weed control, organic topdressing and tree and shrub services. Beveridge shares with LM how he uses Spraye, and the advantages route density offers his business. “For a small- to medium-sized business, Spraye has an amazing array of features it offers at an affordable price,” he says. The base subscription costs $90 a month. Route density is a critical part of Beveridge’s operation because it equates to saving time and fuel. “It means a lot to us because I can fly through a dense route versus driving 20 minutes between houses. So, route density basically is everything to us,” he says. “That’s what we try to aim for when we do marketing.” Beveridge says most LCOs’ spray rigs can hold only so much liquid, and using Spraye helps him maximize the amount of square feet he treats in a day without going over that threshold. “When I pick the route out, (Spraye) automatically shows me how many square feet I picked for that day,” he says. “And if I have a few too many (square feet), I can put a couple (jobs) back in the cart and not do those till another day.” Maximizing by city Jim Beveridge Beveridge lives in one of greater Cleveland’s western suburbs. He organizes his routes by suburb to maximize the time spent in one area. “We can pick a group in Avon that has 23 houses that are basically a mile apart, but it’s a 20-minute drive to get out to the houses, but once you’re out there, you go bing, bang, boom and you’re done.” Beveridge says he also likes that Spraye emails customers twice: once when he schedules the visit — about a week out — and then again 24 hours in advance so the client can clear the yard. Adding and skipping routes Spraye offers several options if a client needs to reschedule a service. “If you pull up and Mrs. Smith said, ‘I’m having a party in 20 minutes with 40 kids coming over, you can’t do my lawn today’ … you could skip it, you could move it to a different day automatically or you can just put it back in the unassigned services queue,” Beveridge says. “And then the software will then recalibrate and figure out the next day that it’s in the vicinity and would make sense route-wise.” Adding clients is easy, he says. Once he adds a client with a specific spray program — six applications or so — the client goes into the Spraye system as an unassigned service organized by city. “We tag all the cities where all our customers are, so we can say our next day is going to be in Rocky River (for example),” Beveridge says. “We look up all the customers in Rocky River we’re going to do and, ‘Oh, there’s Mrs. Smith. We had to cancel her yard last week; let’s do her yard this week.’” The post How one LCO uses Spraye to maximize route density appeared first on Landscape Management.

A Screech in the Night
Ch.13 Repair
Other Chapters
The following day the engines set out at daylight, the workmen having worked through the night to repair Abbey. Avon and Enid ran Workers up and down the lines to wherever they were needed. Blaidd and Una worked their branchlines, bringing dozens of trucks down to their junctions. Screech and Abbey ran up and down the lines collecting the lines of trucks to be shipped off. The trains were long and heavy with wood and rubble, so the pair were given breaks at the end stations when they delivered loads.
They were helped by three engines from the other railway. D3094 was a quiet but polite 08 class diesel shunter, she was put in charge of the Din yard.
6779 was an 8750 class pannier and Enid's younger sibling. They were quickly on top of the work at Uman Docks.
3825 Denbigh County was a 10xx class 4-6-0, he collected the trains organised by D3094 and ran them to the other railway.
Around mid-day, the work crews stopped for a lunch break, and Screech expected to remain at Din till the break was over. Instead, her help was requested on Una's branchline.
The LLywn branchline ran west from Din through the forests to the coast before turning North to reconnect at Dyfnder.
"And here I was looking forward to the break," Gwyn grumbled as he climbed into Screech's cab. "What could they need us for while the workmen are on break anyway?"
'He's already had several breaks they haven't,' the whisper pointed out.
Screech repeated this for her crew.
Freda snorted, "The voice in our engine's head has more sense than you, they wouldn't pull us off the mainline if we weren't needed."
Screech ran down the branch with a line of flatbeds to collect the wood; they soon reached the problem. The further down the branchline one went, the denser and older the forest around them became. Several miles in, the forest was seemingly as ancient as the mountains, towering oaks soaring towards the heavens. It was in this dense part of the forest they found Una.
Several of these ancient giants had been felled by the storm, and even the workman's chainsaws were of little use against these titans. Chains had been tied around the trucks of one and hooked to Una, but the 14xx's wheel simply spun against the weight of the tree.
She stopped, gasping from the effort, "It's no good." She panted to Screech. "The workmen can't cut them, and some of their roots are still deep enough I can't move them."
'More like much too large for you,' Screech ignored the whisper.
"And what would you like me to do? I'm hardly a woodsman."
Una gave her a deadpan look, "You're a 47xx with the ability to rip a truck apart from across the yard. An oversized toothpick should be something you can easily manage."
Screech blinked, "you want me to destroy them? I was under the impression these trees were rather valuable."
"They are," the foreman sighed, " but we have no way to move them otherwise, and the line must be cleared."
Screech stared at the tree for a long moment. "Move back."
Una pulled back onto the passing siding, letting Screech approach the fallen tree.
Screech stretched a tendril out over the tree, shaping it till the edge was razor thin.
Slam!
The tendril slammed down through the log, cutting through it as easily as the air, the other ends shooting into the air from the force of the blow.
The two pieces slammed back down, Una and the crews staring wide-eyed at the split oak.
"Next," Screech said smugly.
***
Screech spent the rest of the afternoon breaking the fallen trees, then lifting their pieces onto the flatbeds, then once she had a full train, she would run the load to Din. The whisper was having a splendid afternoon, revelling in the destruction.
Screech was initially concerned about leaving her work for Guinevere to manage alone, but Denbigh County, bored of waiting for trains, quickly volunteered to cover her trains.
***
Several days later, enough work had been completed to announce regular services would resume after the weekend. It would take weeks for the damage to be fully repaired, but the Uman and Din had done their part.
Screech was resting in the sheds as night fell when Freda approached with a piece of wood covered in cloth in her arms, Gwyn trailed behind her.
Screech watched curiously as she set the wood on the shelf allocated to her berth.
Freda turned to face her engine, "the railway wanted to thank you for your help, both before and during the clean-up, so Miss Morgan commissioned a piece of oak to be carved for you."
"A carving?"
Gywn pulled the cloth, revealing the wooden shape of a 47xx, with the number 4700 on its side.
Screech froze, her eyes impossibly wide.
"Eagle..." She whispered, reaching a trembling tendril to tenderly lift the carving of her older sister onto her footplate.
No one, not even the whisper, mentioned the saltwater falling onto her footplate, now or then.

Day Two: First Leg, Bristol to Keynsham
Diane and Carol seemed to dodge any effects from jet lag. Bob, not so much. Perhaps it was a combo of jet lag and thinking about the stupid lost phone, but I slept only 2 or 3 hours right before it was time to get up. Oh well, these things happen.
Breakfast was quite good and what rain had been predicted never materialized. Weather in the mid 60’s and mostly sunny had us in a great mood as we commenced our adventure. 9 miles to Keynsham along the Avon River; a cakewalk for experienced ramblers like the three of us.
We spent the bulk of the first hour trying to find the correct path along the River Avon , having to backtrack several times before we were confident that we were on the right path. But in due time we were well on our way to a delightful walk in the English countryside. This is the third trek in England for Diane and me, and we soon were immersed in the glory of this kind of travel. For those of you who have not had a glimpse of the UK outside of the cities, you must try one of these walking adventures.
In the United Kingdom, walking through private property is not only allowed, but promoted. Gates for ramblers at the perimeters of fields and pastures are constructed specifically for these activities. Small stickers on fences, gates, and “stiles” (step ladder constructions for climbing over fences) are posted somewhat regularly to help you stay on your intended way. There is a bit of excitement when you haven’t seen one of these in a while and you are wondering if you have made the wrong turn and then you see the sticker assuring you that you are not lost. However, it must be said that some paths are better marked than others, so you can expect to get lost at least once a day. But, with maps and a little GPS, you always will get to where you want to go.
We didn’t meet a whole lot of folks on the trail, but those that we did meet were delightful, eager to chat it up, and ready to help with directions if needed. As one point, a birder pointed out a nest of fledgling grey herons perched atop several trees along the river poised to take their first flight. We had a spirited conversation with a Scotsman about Robert Louis Stevenson and his trips to America. A bloke with a really cute dog and I talked about golf in Californian and Arizona. He really enjoyed Torrey Pines in San Diego. When you slow it down and open up to others, magical things happen.
Upon a recommendation from a fellow rambler, we stopped at the Lock & Weir Inn for lunch. Good pub fare outside overlooking the River hit the spot perfectly. The idea that English food stinks is passé. Pubs take pride in their food, and it is delicious!
Back on the road again, and it was not long before we arrived in Keynsham where we stayed for the night. Modest accommodations and friendly hosts. I can’t say enough about the service that Let’s Go Walking offers the walking traveller. When you get to your daily destination, your luggage is in your room, everything is paid for, and you are treated like family. Simply delightful! (For those of you who have not had the experience of reading my travel musings, I use the word “delightful” a lot).
Before I go any farther, I must say that although the terrain is mostly flat (we are walking beside a river), walking ten miles a day can be quite tiring, especially for one, like me, who is a bit long in the tooth. However, a short rest revived our aged bodies and we went to dinner at the Haywards Guest House where we were staying the night. Not particularly hungry, we had a small dinner and a drink before turning in for the night. Again, the food is locally grown and produced and you could tell that the staff took enormous pride in the quality and presentation.
A grand first day on the trail.
More to come……..

27th of Last Seed, Fredas
I have not faded into non-existence, so that almost made the having to go through the whole procedure of dying worth it.
The Farseer has spoken to me about what I should like done with my body. I spoke with Nabine about it and asked if she wanted to partake, as is the Bosmer custom. She said that since I was not truly dying, she did not wish to put herself through that emotional aspect of the process.
I had reminded her that, of course, I was effectively never going to die, so if partaking of some part of me was important, that I would understand her desire to do so and would not deny her that opportunity.
She thought for a long while before saying that she could not bring herself to do it. That such acts were only supposed to be a way to keep those with you who had passed on as a way to hold onto that part of them that was physical. Since I would not be dying, despite her jokes to the contrary, she had no desire to consume me.
In truth, it was a bit of a relief. I could only imagine how difficult it would be for her. But also, I could not imagine how I might feel seeing the aftermath of it all. Knowing that....
Well it matters not, after all, she did not wish to do so.
Instead, I had the Farseer take my life somewhere away from where my family might see. She asked me if I would like my body treated as a fallen of their tribe. I told her I would be greatly honored for her to do so. She told me that, while they would forgo some of the usual rituals, I was not exactly dead, dead, she would have my remains laid to rest in the proper way.
Then we walked the path of the Veil of the Ghost Snake. I gathered the bog rats and made the offering. The Farseer spoke to the Ghost Snake and asked for His assistance, which He granted. Several of the wisewomen joined us with their own offerings. The Ghost Snake allowed us entrance to the ritual chamber below and the Farseer and I ventured down.
It was not a place I had ever been before and I admit a shiver of fear as we came to the altar. The wisewomen entered  soon after and bathed me and anointed me in the oils of the dead. Then I was dressed in mourning stole and my face painted and hair decorated with flowers. The Farseer took me by the hand and bade me lay down upon the cool stone. She explained the spell briefly and made sure I was comfortable as possible, given the hard stone. The wisewomen laid around me mourning flowers and herb and incense and began to recite the parting words.
When they had finished praying for me, the Farseer handed me a vial. She did not have to tell me the contents for me to know the poison well by scent alone. I thanked her for her choice. It was a kindness, really. It was a combination that causes loss of feeling, then you slip into slumber, and then you simply stop breathing. It is a peaceful acting poison, far less traumatic than most,  if you are able to mix all the parts in the correct proportions.
The wise women began their spell and the Farseer completed the first part of her incantations before giving me the signal to drink.
It was bitter to take down without anything else to ease its passage over tongue. But I knew my participation was important. This death was important. Even with the thousands of doubts and fears that poured into my mind like a bottomless well, I force my hand to remain at my lips and finished pouring the poison in, swallowing as quickly as possible.
The wise woman laid a soothing hand upon my brow and had me lay back against the small cushion she brought. She stroked my forehead like a child’s, even as the spell continued.
I felt a strange sort of light, almost a presence around me, through me, just before the poison began to take effect.
Despite all I had been told about the poison, it was not entirely painless.
I did lose the sensation of my limbs. A sort of numb, but thrumming feel, akin to the vibration of many bees as they swarm around a queen. Sort of warm at first.
Then the heat began to leave me. I began to dream. It was as though I were laying on my back in a pond. The water slowly creeping up my body as the level of the water grew.
And when it reached up to my face, I realized I could not breathe. There was soft music, as though the nymphs of Imperial legends were singing as they bade me join them in their games. The water had submerged me. My lungs burned and ached. My chest felt tight. The singing grew louder until it was almost one singular, continuous note.
Then I was gasping, my eyes shooting open. I found myself naked in the middle of a grove of trees. I could tell I was in Deshaan. After a short while of looking about, I came to get my barrings, not so very far from the tribe. It was a short jaunt back to the camp, where several of the women of the camp laughed at my returning without a stitch of clothing.
I belated realized that it was probably uncomfortable for them, so I plucked up a mushroom to hide my manhood behind. Perhaps a bit too much of a symbolic object, but it was what was at hand. I hurried to the tent, blessedly empty from the children being at their respective studies, and changed into the clothing I had left for myself.
Still shaking off the strange images from before my last death, I decided a few drinks and a bit of a lie down was in order.
I could not sleep however, I continued to see the images behind my eyelids. So I turned to more drink and picked up my lute for a bit of a distraction.
It was near to supper when the Farseer and the wise women returned and I was made to go to the Farseer’s yurt where the spells were continued.
As they worked their incantations over me, I could hear the merriment of dinner preparations and eating.
By the time everything was complete, my stomach was growing and dusk had fallen.
I was allowed to return to Nabine and Avon and the children. They had saved me some nix-hound chili on ashyams with a side of pickled mushrooms. It was the perfect comfort for all I had been through. Kuna laughed at me and said I ate like a starved Kagouti. Nabine scolded her about speaking to her father in such a way, though I am sure she was right.
That night there was singing and storytelling by the fire. Cariel curled up in Nabine’s lap and her wide eyes soon fell shut as she dozed off to the ancient epics. Kuna, unlike her sister, was so rapt with attention that when the storymaster paused to take a drink, she almost had a tantrum about needing to hear the rest.
Nabine told her to be patient or she would be put to sleep right then and there without getting to hear any more. She sulked, but waited. As she did so, began to shape the fire, so that when the storymaster resumed her tale, there was images to accompany them. Avon joined in, as did Sildras, who already knew the stories well. It is a memory I shall not soon forget. And it made me nostalgic for Qau-dar’s clan and the stories told to Little Khes when she was still so young.
How I miss them so.
Of course, even the happiest moments must come to an end.
One of the wise women called me to the Farseer’s yurt. The Farseer, Mother, and several of the wise women were already gathered and conversing about what was seen.
All of them went silent as I entered.
The Farseer told me that they knew now why I was falling susceptible to the urges of the Three Pillars of my Prince’s domain. I was eager, but apprehensive about what she was about to say, but simply nodded and waited for her judgement.
She explained that, as my soul was held in the Spiral Skein and I had given myself to my Prince, my connection to my soul was being filtered through the influences of Her realm. Further, each time I die, although Nirn is providing my body to me, it is through my connection to my soul back in the Spiral Skein.
I asked why I had not felt such influences when I had died with my soul in Coldharbour. The Farseer replied it was likely that I was receiving some influence, but that without my having pledged myself to Bal, and in fact having pledged my service to another Prince, the connection was far weaker.
The Farseer warned me that the more I die with my soul dedicated to my Prince and residing within the Spiral Skein, the more I will change.
I asked her what sort of changes and what I should be worried about.
She did not answer right away. The wise women looked at one another in nervous silence.
It was Mother who asked the Farseer to tell me.
The Farseer said that, I would slowly become more and more a being of my Prince’s realm. The more I died, the more influence Her sphere would have upon me. In a sense, I would slowly become more and more like the other non-mortals within His realm.
I glanced about and none of the wise women would meet my eyes. I turned back to the Farseer and asked her to be very specific with me.
Again she stalled in telling me my fate. I turned to Mother and asked her to please tell me.
Mother sighed and the Farseer made some motion in her direction that I did not understand. But Mother shook her head and took a deep breath to compose herself. I realized then that she was looking far less statuesque than she would normally allow herself. She looked almost feeling.
With a great rush she simply told me that I would become effectively a Daedra. I would still be Dunmer, but my body would become more and more Daedric each time that it reformed. Always outwardly Dunmer, but I would begin to feel the sway of that Daedric  existence.
I laughed.
It was likely nerves, for there was no mirth in it.
A mortal become a Daedra? It was ludicrous, was it not?
And yet, some part of me knew that those impulses were not natural to me as who I had been before. But they felt so natural to me now. The proof was within me. I could tell it.
Did this mean that I was likely to become a serious danger to my family? To my House?
A crack of thunder split the sound of my laughter, a flash that illuminated the entire yurt. Then the rain began to pound  upon the yurt, a sudden summer storm that seemed manifested from my own heart. I heard the sound of people running to get out of the rain and to their dry yurts.
Another deafening strike of thunder struck so close that it caused the ground to shake and I heard Kuna shriek in surprise. I heard Nabine singing a lullaby to soothe her, even as the storm continued.
Usually I would enjoy the chaotic fury of a summer storm. The thrill of the danger, but the knowledge that it brought with it cooling rains that quench the giant mushrooms and towering trees’ thirsts.
Somehow all I could feel was emptiness. That hollow space within me where my soul once resided. A space never to be filled, but for the temporary warmth of aetherial shards. Did Daedra feel this too? Or do their very natures prevent such things? Is it simply normal?
The Farseer told me I should rest to regain my strength after such a day.
I did not argue. I let Mother lead me back to my tent as though I were a child once more.
The storm continued to rage all around the encampment throughout the night. I laid there and listened to the sounds of everyone breathing.
I cannot describe the strange way that I feel now. It is mostly a sort of melancholy, a dread. But some part of me is also excited by it. I cannot explain why. Is this a blessing from my Prince. Has She deemed me worthy of her service in such a way as to make me one of her own? Was it intentional?
What am I saying, my Prince is far to good at weaving fates for it not to be intentional.
There was much of me that has been worried about if I might lose myself in the dangerous urges I felt. Yet, knowing that they stem from what they are, it is a sort of comfort. It is not that I have lost my moral compass, it is that I am experiencing that urge that Daedra always fight when in the presence of mortals. And they can do it. Which means that I, too, will be able to do it.
Perhaps it is not what I should be focused on given the grave implications, but I cannot help but feel blessed.
Is this the wrong feeling to have?

India Electric Two-Wheeler Market All Set to Flourish: Expected to Reach Worth USD 360.3 Million in 2027
ng to a study conducted recently by the strategic consulting and market research firm, BlueWeave Consulting, the Indian electric two-wheeler market was worth USD 64.5million in 2020 and is further projected to reach USD360.3 million by 2027, at a CAGR of 27.6% during the forecast period (2021-2027). The growing concern over air pollution is pushing the automobile industry to reduce its carbon footprint, bolstering the need for electric vehicles in the market. Additionally, the market is primarily driven by strict emission norms/regulations, government incentives, and increasing environmental awareness.
Tumblr media
Stringent Emission Norms Expected to Benefit the India Electric Two-Wheeler Market
The electric two-wheeler market is mainly driven by stringent pollution norms, government incentives, and rising climate change awareness. Since the emissions from conventional gasoline-based vehicles cause environmental degradation, the Indian government, therefore, has initiated various measures for regulating carbon emissions, which is indirectly driving the sales of electric scooters and motorcycles in the country. Moreover, the government also extends its support to electric two-wheelers through subsidies, thus, encouraging the adoption of these vehicles as a ‘good replacement’ of the conventional ones. An average electric two-wheeler provides a lifetime savings of 1.98 tonnes of carbon emissions as compared to an average petrol two-wheeler, which is equivalent to planting 11 trees."
Launch of Different Initiatives by Government Augmenting the Market Growth
The Indian electric two-wheeler market is rising rapidly as a result of government funding and incentives under the country's "FAME India" schemes, which encourage faster adoption of electric two-wheelers. The electric two-wheeler market in India is projected to prosper more in the coming years as the market anticipates a more conducive climate for the growth of the electric two-wheeler industry under "FAME-II."According to the new standards (FAME II), battery-powered scooters and motorcycles with a minimum range of 80 km and a top speed of 40 km/h is eligible for the subsidy. The new standards are expected to significantly boost the segment. Over the projected period, the Indian electric two-wheeler market is expected to be propelled by the rising number of electric two-wheeler manufacturers and their rising emphasis on research and development to produce technologically advanced and affordable electric two-wheelers.

48V by Voltage Type Dominate the India Electric Two-Wheeler Market
Since 48V electric two-wheeler vehicles are stable and cost-effective, such vehicles have gained maximum traction in the Indian electric two-wheeler industry. Because of their high current power, 48V batteries are the safest and most cost-effective choice. Moreover, low-power dissipations provide excellent efficiency and guarantee high reliability and long service life, besides increasing their market penetration. Owing to these factors, electric two-wheelers are in high demand in different sectors, including the automotive, industrial, and communication industries. Moreover, as emission regulations are becoming more stringent, manufacturers are now shifting their focus to low and medium-range electric vehicles. The shift of consumers toward low-cost and medium-range electric vehicles is expected to influence the demand for 48 voltage batteries during the forecast period.
India Electric-Two Wheeler Market: Regional Insights
India electric two-wheeler market is segmented into Eastern India, Northern India, Southern India, and Western India. Southern India caters to the largest share in the market followed by Northern India. These two regions are growing due to the rising technological advancement and infrastructure projects in India's electric two-wheeler market. The “Switch Delhi’ campaign was launched by Delhi’s Chief Minister, Mr. Arvind Kejriwal for promoting electric vehicles in the city. Additionally, monetary incentives are likely to be offered to people who switch to electric two-wheelers in the city, as a result of which North India dominates the Indian electric two-wheeler market.
Impact of COVID-19
The COVID-19 pandemic has posed a significant threat to India's electric two-wheeler market, as the production of electric two-wheelers has been hampered as a result of the lockdown. For a market that is trying to strengthen its position in the industry, COVID 19 came as a severe blow. Moreover, major auto manufactures were also impacted by this communicable disease. Nevertheless, the launch of BS-VI standards has created ample opportunities for electric two-wheelers said the pandemic. Since BS-VI cuts down tailpipe emissions, they emit less heat and produce less noise compared to conventional vehicles. Investing in an electric two-wheeler is likely to help in retaining air quality and lower health risks in communities. We have already entered the post-pandemic era; consumers now feel safer and protected to travel in their own vehicles so the demand for private vehicles is increasing, thus, creating significant opportunities in the electric two-wheeler market.
Competitive Landscape
The leading players in the Indian electric two-wheeler market are Hero Electric Vehicles Pvt. Ltd, Lohia Auto Industries, Electrotherm (India) Ltd, Avon Cycles Ltd, Okinawa Autotech Pvt. Ltd., NDS Eco Motors Private Limited, YULU, Ather Energy, AMPERE VEHICLES, Revolt Motors, Hero Electric Vehicles Pvt. Ltd., and other prominent players. The Indian electric two-wheeler market is consolidated in nature. The rise in government initiatives and programs for providing subsidies has led to the rising demand for electric two-wheelers. In terms of competition, many new players are expected to enter the market in the coming years as the electric two-wheeler market is emerging rapidly. Moreover, the market participants are focusing on improving their services to attain a competitive edge over other players.
For example, YULU bike announced in June 2020 that they had raised more than USD 20 million in funding from key investors such as Bajaj Auto Ltd, Blume Ventures, 3one4 Capital, Wavemaker, and US-based Rocketship. The fresh investment amid the COVID-19 crisis validates the growth potential of the new-age mobility firms in the Indian market.

I'm gonna liveblog my 3rd conversion class lmao
Catholic raised lady asked about athiesm. Apparent kushner hated athiests I guess? But rabbi is giving good talks on it I think.
I really think athiesm as it stands normally in America is again a Christian paradigm- athiests reject the "big man in the sky" and "gd is cruel" is a really Christian perspective. It's completely bizarre.
Apparently, my Rabbi says he sucks at philosophy which is funny to me.
Children have fully formed theologies! Super cool!
Now we're chatting about how extremist theology led to the Shoah.
It has been 5 minutes.
"Far too many people do not have an adult relationship with the Divine" WOAH?!?!? I gotta reflect on that 0-0
Oooo we learn about the HHD today!!
Rabbi is also completely panicked for the holidays.
Tishrei is the 7th month because passover is in the first month. We're getting ready for 5781!!
Damn I wish i had a shofar ;-; I gotta get to some selichot services aaaa. I'm COMPLETELY unprepared. Rising before the sun??? Can I pray selichot without a minyan???
Shofar is a divine alarm clock, which is cool! But I think all of it is cool.
OH we sound it to confuse haSatan lmaoooo. HaSatan is a fucking lawyer. I get it now!! 🧿
Oh no, he's comparing hasatan to Diné tales of Coyotes. I'm not sure if that's appropriate.
Angels have no free will, nice. Angels dissolve as soon as they fulfill their purpose. 3 angels met Avraham, maybe this is why bad things come in 3?
Theodicy- the justification of Gd.
We still chatting about the Shofar confusing haSatan, how he keeps showing up to the heavenly courts but they're empty because its Elul.
30 minutes in.
4 new years!! So cool!! I cant wait for tu b'shevat. Tree time 🌳
EVERYONE is judged on rosh hashanan, and i can tell u that my cats did NOT do teshuva.
Sukkot is the judgement of rain, fall -spring is the rainy season.
Yom haDin is a day of judgement but not "the final call".
Ooh we talk about sin now. Sin in Christianity is not too close nowadays to judaism. Some think sin is temptation, external evil. But judaism doesn't see like that, the devil isn't really a thing. So we chose our sins, our obedience, etc. During this month we reflect on it. Sin isn't really a mistake, mistakes are honest, sin is like doing cruelty on purpose. Judaism's idea of sin are word like cheyt, but that word means "to miss the mark". There's avera, like the root of "to cross over", as in you decided to transgress. Avone, iniquity where u just ignore all boundaries. Peasha is callousness and neglect.
(This is going fast, bear with me)
On Yom Kippur, "you shall afflict your soul". Fasting, bathing, drink, anointing, leather shoes, sex, etc are forbidden on this day. We pretend to be dead, as Yom Kippur is like death? Worm. It is a shabbat of Complete Rest, so we go Next Level. Yom Kippur is allowed to be on shabbat, but not Friday or Sunday.
Scapegoat, scapegoat
Kohen gadol does mad sacrifice. Good for him. He pronounces the Shem ha-M'forash this day only.
Forgiveness, pardon, and atonement are all different. Teshuvah is turning not repentance (although it can and often does include repentance). I think?? Hmm
Two cateogories of sin: between us and Gd, and between a person and their fellow. However, hurting someone also offends Gd. Good for Her. On Yom Kippur we ask forgiveness from Gd, it doesn't absolve us of communal responsibility.
We are judged on Rosh HaShanah but our fate is sealed on Yom Kippur. You can't get rid of the consequences of your behavior, it isnt a clean slate. On Yom Kippur we accept the consequences, but on the days between we try to mitigate them.
All done I think!
That was. Much

The Veerali
Rooted in Nature
Tumblr media
Banner art based on and supported by my Patrons ♥
Hidden away in the thick and humid jungles and swamps of southern Ivendarea, the Veerali are the smallest ethnic sub-group of the Nyr. The majority of them still lives in the lands of their ancestors, in small villages hidden away from plain sight, but a small portion of them have become nomads roaming the lands east and west of the Skyreach Mountains. They travel from village to village, city to city, telling stories and offering their services as talented artists, engineers, mages, or fighters.

Culture and History
Once the majority of their population had settled in Beldran and Maan Ganyr, mixing with the Wylaai and Gideya. But with both these cities destroyed more or less recently, they have become thinly spread and distrustful to outsiders.
Cultural Heritage
Originating from one of the most dangerous but also fertile and profitable regions of Ivendarea, the Veerali call the southern marshes their home. Vegetation and wildlife are rich, sustaining even larger communities with ease. But the swamps are treacherous to those not careful about where - or what - they step on. Flora and fauna are as deadly as they are beautiful.
The Veerali are a reluctant but curious people, very strongly inclined to magic. They have a rich culture of music, art, and poetry, are talented alchemists, and their organic architecture manipulating the growth of certain trees blends in perfectly with the environment. The Veerali are also the inventors of the Riverblade, a type of flat boat with a sail used to quickly transport wares, people, or news along the many small rivers of the swamps. It has become one of the most popular means of transportation across Ivendarea and many sub-types exist for different environments and purposes.
Despite some initial reluctance when the Aman’a Valeethi first surfaced a few millennia ago with their new religion centred on Aman, the Veerali are today devout followers of Aman’s Teachings. The virtues and values taught by Aman, their view on life, death, and rebirth and being in tune with the world and one’s magic strongly resonate with the Veerali.
On the southernmost shores of Ivendarea the Veerali also have a handful of settlements that used to be focused on fishing, but nowadays are dedicated artists’ communities. The Veerali create beautiful sculptures from driftwood and stone, and they dive for pearls and collect other treasures washed up on the shore. They turn them into enchanted jewellery, or incorporate them into their clothing symbolizing their social status in many ways.
Language and Dialect
The Veerali’s dialect is melodic and smooth, rather pleasant to listen to, and also comparatively close to pure Nyrval. There are some terms and phrases going back much further in time than the standardization of Nyrval though, so specific that they usually need to be explained to outsiders. Next to Nyrval, most Veerali also speak Trade and despite their isolation are eager learners and somewhat fluent in at least one or two additional languages as well.
Shared Values
The Veerali honour nature and despise its destruction for the purpose of constructing settlements or machines of war. Outsiders are to be treated with wariness and suspicion, particularly after the events of the Invasion War. But those who have earned the Veerali’s trust are welcomed wholeheartedly to the homes of this reclusive group.
The Veerali’s shyness is not to be confused with a lack of fierceness, and among the natives of Ivendarea they are the best-trained warriors. Due to their strong magical inclination and strength of will they are also very sought-after by recruiters of the Avon Julanor. Despite usually not launching attacks on outsiders, they don’t hesitate to fight those who invade their communities. Widely scattered across many insular communities, they are still well-connected among each other. News travel fast and far, and distances are quickly crossed in times of need. The Veerali stick together and hold on strongly to their heritage, deeply rooted in their values, environment, and community. They are very spiritual people, valuing the upkeep of religious tradition and rituals, tying them into their daily lives. They greatly enjoy their independence, living completely self-sufficient, although some express a desire to see more of the world, become more connected to the outside, maybe even establish a proper harbour on Ivendarea’s southern coast.
Common Etiquette
Outsiders - be it Assadin or just Nyr from outside a community - are not to be brought into the heart of a village before gaining approval from its respective council. The Veerali don’t like surprise visits. As a sign of good will when coming to a new community, the guest is usually required to bring a little gift - it doesn’t have to be valuable, but it has to have significance and meaning. Even better than a gift though is offering a service to the community.
The elders as well as those who were reborn many times, are to be treated with the utmost respect, as they carry vast knowledge and are the pillars of the community - Veerali and Nyr as a whole.
Fashion
Veerali clothing is made from light natural fibres that breathe easily and dry quickly in the humid south. While guards and workers in the outskirts of the villages tend to wear more muted colours to blend in with the environment, more vibrant colours are worn in everyday life and particularly for festive celebrations. The Veerali incorporate driftwood, amber, and pearls in their clothing and jewellery. Strands of fabric are braided to achieve not only interesting textures in everyday clothing but are also used to create a thick but flexible padding worn under armour for additional protection. The Veerali’s armour is made predominantly from small, lacquered wooden plates sewn onto woven fabrics, resembling fish, snake, or dragon scales. Sometimes similar elements can be found on everyday-clothing and jewellery.
Tumblr media
A Veerali fighter wearing a very typical chest plate, pauldron, and glove made from wood, decorated with moss, fabric-straps, golden shimmering resin, an animal claw, and more. Notable are also the shoes with soles made from gum donning little spikes that make climbing easier. In comparison to the heavy armour the clothing more suitable for all-day wear is light and breathable, but created with the same eye for detail and organic shapes.
The Veerali are also known to wear a specific necklace that indicates the amount of times an individual has been reborn, depending on how many precious stones are attached to it. They receive it during their Vath’eran. Being very spiritual and connected to their past, the Veerali have a lot of respect for those reborn many times, deeming them wise and visionary.
Art & Architecture
Veerali art and architecture is organic and flowing, religious symbolism often sneakily incorporated so that it isn’t visible at first glance. Being at peace and one with nature is in focus, so their buildings are usually flooded with light. The base structures for most Veerali houses are trees manipulated during their growth to take on certain shapes that form living spaces similar to houses. The term “house” is definitely a bit of a stretch, as usually a house is not always a connected structure. Much more common are large communal areas at the base of trees where everyone comes together to cook and eat, while higher up in the trees spherical structures contain sleeping quarters and other personal rooms, offering shelter to individuals or small families. Yet again separate spaces for work and personal hygiene are spread across the whole communal area’s outskirts.
The Veerali wash and cook with collected rain water, and they purify their used water before releasing it again into nearby rivers or the ocean. Water pipes are made from specific types of hollow bamboo. They run entirely above ground, often aesthetically incorporated into existing buildings and structures such as bridges and pathways connecting living and working spheres.
Ideals
Beauty Ideals
The Veerali braid their hair in a variety of fashions, tying it up, weaving it together, and decorating it to show and appreciate craftsmanship and creativity. Jewellery is worn by most individuals, fashioned from natural materials ranging from wood and metal to seashells and even types of grass. Fierceness and a determined attitude are well-liked and respected, independence and freedom are celebrated.
Courtship Ideals
Persistence is key when courting Veerali, as relationships are serious business and many are very picky when it comes to choosing their partner(s). It needs convincing and passion to woo the other party, fighting for them with all you have is only just enough. Material gifts are not as popular as elsewhere, they have to be truly unique and carry a lot of special meaning to matter. Much more valued than gifts are deeds.
A common saying originating from Veerali culture goes as follows: “How many miles would they chase the storm for you?” Devoting themselves to and sacrificing a lot to their partner, family, and community is a grand virtue, against all odds and probabilities.
Relationship Ideals
Relationships that go beyond pure physical aspects are treated as serious business and meant to last, all parties committing to a shared life together. The partners support each other through all hardships but also enjoy a lot of freedom and privileges within their hometowns. The community will help together to build a new private living space for the couple. Their children are raised in a communal effort, teaching them about history, art, life skills, and their heritage. Bonded partners don’t have to take on guard duties or other risky jobs, unless they truly want to, to fully devote their lives to each other, their craft, children, and their home.
