Good News - May 15-21
Like these weekly compilations? Support me on Ko-fi! Also, if you tip me on Ko-fi, at the end of the month I'll send you a link to all of the articles I found but didn't use each week - almost double the content!
1. Translocation of 2,000 rhinos in Africa gets underway in “one of the most audacious conservation efforts of modern times”
“The 2,000 rhinos - more than are currently found in any single wild location in Africa - represent around 12-15% of the continent’s remaining white rhino population. […] “Rhinos perform an important ecological function in the environment as a large grazing herbivore,” says Dale Wepener[….] “The protection of rhino is far more than just looking after rhino; other species that occur in the protected areas will benefit from the protection,” explains Jooste. “This will lead to an increase in diversity and result in much healthier ecosystems.”
2. Florida Corridor Buffers Effects of Climate Change on Wildlife — And People
“A massive multi-partner effort that has conserved 10 million acres for wildlife in Florida over past decades will help buffer wildlife—and people—from the effects of climate change, a new report says. […] Protecting these corridors is important for wildlife genetics, demography and connectivity […], conducting prescribed fires in the corridor can reduce the risk of more intense wildfires [… and] they can provide buffers against hurricanes and seasonal thunderstorms.”
3. Global life expectancy to increase by nearly 5 years by 2050 despite geopolitical, metabolic, and environmental threats
“Increases are expected to be largest in countries where life expectancy is lower, contributing to a convergence of increased life expectancy across geographies. The trend is largely driven by public health measures that have prevented and improved survival rates from cardiovascular diseases, COVID-19, and a range of communicable, maternal, neonatal, and nutritional diseases (CMNNs).”
4. Valencia has Spain’s longest urban park
“Jardin del Turia (Turia Garden) is the green spine of the City of Valencia and Spain’s (and possibly Europe’s) longest urban park stretching for a length of 8.5 kilometres [… and] the current administration plans to make Jardin del Turia Europe’s largest city green space by extending it to the sea[….] Almost all Valencia residents (97 per cent) live within 300 metres of an urban green space. […] Jardin del Turia is a true urban oasis that provides exceptional thermal comfort, with a temperature difference of up to three degrees compared to other areas of the city.”
5. This Paint Could Clean Both Itself and the Air
“When an artificial ultraviolet light source shines on [photocatalytic] paint, the nanoparticles react with pollutants to make them break down—theoretically removing them from the nearby air and preventing a discoloring buildup. [… R]esearchers developed a new photocatalytic paint that they claim works using UV rays from ordinary sunlight, making its self-cleaning properties easier to activate. They’ve also shown that they can effectively produce this paint from recycled materials [including fallen leaves].”
6. Planting Seedlings for a Cooler Rockingham
“A dedicated group of volunteers recently planted over a thousand native seedlings in Lewington Reserve [… and] re-established canopy cover to areas of the reserve to create cooling shade for the local community and provide homes for native wildlife. […] Planting lots of trees and shrubs in urban areas can help create shade and cool cities, mitigating the impacts of climate change, contributing to biodiversity conservation and building greener, more resilient communities.”
7. Sydney’s first dedicated affordable housing for trans women designed to deliver ‘positive outcomes’
“Community housing provider and charity Common Equity NSW, […] which is for people on very low to moderate incomes, prides itself on creating inclusive living and promotes the independence and well-being of people and communities […, and] will deliver the first-of-its-kind social housing in a bid to provide a safe place to live for transgender women seeking an affordable home.”
8. Rewilding: How a herd of bison reintroduced to Romania is helping ‘supercharge’ carbon removal
“170 European Bison reintroduced to Romania’s Țarcu mountains could help capture and store the carbon released by up to 84,000 average US petrol cars each year. […] By grazing a 48 square kilometre area of grassland in a wider landscape of 300 kilometres squared, they helped to capture an additional 54,000 tonnes of carbon each year. That is around 10 times the amount that would be captured by the ecosystem without the bison.”
9. World’s biggest grids could be powered by renewables, with little or no storage
“[…] 100% renewable supply can then match the load by putting surplus electricity into two kinds of distributed storage worth that [an energy expert] says are worth buying anyway – ice-storage air-conditioning and smart bidirectional charging of electric cars, and recover that energy when needed, filling the last gaps with unobtrusively flexible demand.”
10. Supporting the Long-Term Survival of Copper River Salmon and Alaska Native Traditions
“With $4.3 million in NOAA funds, the Copper River Watershed Project and The Eyak Corporation will remove fish passage barriers, opening more streams for salmon spawning and subsistence fishing. [… As part of this effort, o]ld narrow culverts that constrict water flow will be replaced with “stream simulation” culverts wide enough to fit the full stream, including its banks. They are also deep to allow contractors to place stones and other material inside to mimic a natural stream bottom.”

Monster Killer
“What is this?” He checks it once a week. Most of the time he finds nothing. It is alright, he has made enough from his job to live comfortably between jobs. The dead drop has an unusual surprise today. A small jar full of change ( when he counts it comes to $ 23.42) and a handwritten letter. Matthias sits down in his chair to read it.
“ Dear monster killer,
I need your help. No one believes there is a monster in my closet. Daddy says it my imagination and mommy says it is just the clothes looking funny in the dark. But, I know it is there. Please help me. He is going to eat me all up.
That is all I had in my piggy bank. I hope it is enough.
Your friend,
Lynn ( age 9)
I live at 591 Rockingham Dr.
Please come quick.”
Monster killer, that is a new one. Matthias is a world class contract killer. He has taken out mob bosses and politicians. He has never been asked to kill a monster in the closet before. How did young Lynn even find him? What is he to do about her request? She is obviously scared. He has no children of his own but has nieces and nephews. The young lady is terrified and reached out to him. He has to see what he can do to help her.
He dresses in all black and arms himself with a knife. No guns to risk the client he is trying to help. Besides, it isn’t like there is really something there to kill. He is humoring her.
The house is what he would expect, suburbia, well kept lawn, a bike against the tree in the front yard. It is full dark when he slips around it, looking for a sign of a little girls room. Ah, pink ruffled curtains and a cracked window. Thank you Lynn. He carefully removes the screen and raises it, slipping inside. Pink is everywhere, from the aforementioned curtains to the canopy over her bed. Sweet. The child herself lays awake and smiles when she sees him come in.
“Monster killer?”
“Yes, hello Lynn. Where is this beast?”
She points to the closet, door cracked open. “Mommy shut it but it opened it. It’s eyes, they watch me.”
“That won’t do. Let me get for you.” She sighs in relief. Real relief he sees. Whatever she sees or senses in there is real to her. “You stay on the bed. Don’t move no matter what.”
“Okay.” Her knees come up and she hugs them over her nightgown as he walk over to the closet, knife out. He eases the door open and steps inside. His intend was to make some noises, pretend to kill it and, ease her mind. He never expected…
Eyes, as old as creation or older, look at him as he walks in, shutting the door behind him. He flips a flashlight on. It is a profane, loathsome thing. So monstrous it hurts his eyes to look at it. Sharp teeth dripping globs of heinous saliva.
“She seeks a champion,” the voice is unholy, something out of the dregs of hell, “and you are all she could come up with.”
“I am enough.” He is her monster killer. The deplorable beast won’t get to her on his watch.
The fight is grisly. Matthias ' razor sharp knife against the things claws. The battleground a four by two foot closet. Matthias stays in front of the door. The fearful thing won’t be seen by Lynn, not while he draws breath. They gasp and claw, growl and stab. The noises bleed out of the closet and child’s room. They awaken her parents.
“Lynn, what is going on in here!” her daddy demands.
“I hired the monster killer. He is getting the monster in my closet.”
“What?” Her mommy cries out as her daddy goes to the door.
“Whoever you are come out of my daughter ‘s closet, right now!”
Matthias, disheveled and bloody, opens the door. The adults stand in a silent tableau for a moment. Then Matthias breaks it. “, It’s in there. Don’t let her see it. And believe your kid the next time.” He walks past her stunned parents, kisses Lynn on the forehead, “I got it love.” And slips back out the window, replaces the screen, and heads home, another job successfully done.

https://www.google.com/maps?cid=11830077107003647428 Mainly professionals make use of various techniques depending on the gutter web content. If the seamless gutter material is wet then the method used is various from that made use of to clean up a completely dry gutter. In situation of a seamless gutter which has wet components, typically, the so called 'scoop and drop" technique is made use of. It appears from the name that this technique is simply the scooping out of leaves and also debris from the gutter and special depositing or going down of the debris at a particular place or in a vault bag. This prevents the trembling away and also spreading of fallen leaves in the surrounding area. The other method used in wet seamless gutter cleansing is the seamless gutter pail method that entails taking a plastic pail with a steel take care of, cutting the manage in 2 at the facility. Completions of the take care of are then curved right into hook forms that are connected onto the edge of the rain gutter. One is required to merely scoop out the contents of the seamless gutter and also empty right into the bucket. This procedure is cumbersome and as the employee does a great deal of going up and down in this method. In situation of dry gutter cleaning, the process is easier and less difficult as a brilliant seamless gutter bag technique including a bottomless pail with a bag fastened in the reduced end is utilized to scoop out the particles from the seamless gutter and also down payment in the trash bag. The next essential task in any kind of cleansing treatment would certainly be downspout cleaning. All downspouts should be checked for blockages every single time you embark on gutter cleaning, as well as in case one is discovered one requires to get it removed today. Making use of a hose, sealed with a dustcloth at the mouth of the downspout make certain you blast away the obstruction with a hefty circulation of water launched under high pressure.

3 Tips to Extend the Life of Your Solar Panels: Mandurah Expert Advice
When they consider the costs of solar panels, Mandurah residents will often think about the installation prices. This is a common mistake, but there are other factors to consider, such as light maintenance, cleaning and interest rates for financing. When discussing solar power, the focus is often placed squarely on recouping the initial investment as quickly as possible. This is an excellent way to get the system to pay for itself quickly, but perhaps a longer term view is also necessary. The longer your solar panels last, the better the return on your initial investment over the long term. In this article, we will look at three top tips to extend the useful life of your solar panels.
Cleanliness is Key
Once you get used to having solar panels, it’s easy to forget that they are there at all. After all, they are often located in hard to access locations, and they are not observed on a day to day basis. However, the efficiency and lifespan of the solar panel can both be affected by the cleanliness of the unit. So, how often do you need to clean your solar panels? Well, this is a very hard question to answer, some areas have more dust particulates in the air than others and cleaning would need to be more frequent. If you live in a dustier area, you may need to clean your solar panels weekly, and areas with cleaner air could be fine with monthly cleaning.
Cleaning Solar Panels
When you clean a solar panel, the goal is to get the glass nice and clean without introducing scratches. So, it’s important to never use an abrasive cleaning product or scrubbing sponge. The best way to clean a solar panel without resorting to using ladders is to mount a cloth on a pool skimmer. Use a soft cloth or washing rag, and the cleaning solution should be a kind biodegradable liquid soap. There will be harder deposits of bird poop or tree sap that are harder to remove. Be patient, don’t try to scrape these materials off and wash them off slowly with plenty of water. When the solar panels are nice and clean, you should quickly notice the difference on your meter.
Watch the Shade
Hopefully, when you installed the solar panels, you took the time to ensure that they were kept away from shady areas, such as pylons, trees, and other buildings. If your existing panels are in a bad spot, they can be moved if it’s absolutely necessary, but this could be expensive. However, if you have a problem with a nearby tree, it should be fairly easy to periodically trim the branches back to keep the shade at bay. This is important the amount of shade will reduce your solar panel output exponentially. As an example: a solar panel in ¼ shade could reduce your output by as much as ½ which is a significant loss.
If they are interested in solar panels Rockingham based residents should get in touch with iBreeze for expert help and advice.

Land Management
Forestry mulching is a form of land clearing that makes use of one machine to do all the of cutting, grinding, as well as clearing the vegetation. The forestry mulcher or forestry mulching machine uses a rotary drum attachment with teeth or steel chipper tools that allow vegetation to be shredded. These heavy duty mulchers can clear vegetation up to fifteen acres in a day, although its work depends on the density and terrain, as well as the kind of timber and vegetation it’s working in. Mulchers can be used to prevent wildfires by making fire breaks and clearing rows around a section of timber or cut over. It can also be used to restore wildlife with new vegetation regrowth. Forestry mulching is known to reduce the spread of fire by cutting fire breaks or lanes. This can reduce and cut down on the cost of any active fire. Cleanup: Once the fire is stopped, clean up starts by preventing soil erosion and providing a mulch top layer. This will prevent water pollution.
Mulchers can be used to clear residential and commercial properties. Right-of-way clearing and maintenance Forestry mulching is often used in the right-of-way maintenance and clearing for roads, pipelines, highways, and other utility lines. The process often requires the complete removal of standing trees, stumps, and other vegetation. Wetlands Habitat Conservation Mulching is loved by those who want to conserve the habitats for doves, pheasants, deer, as well as other animals. The conservation of habitat for animals includes water, food, shelter as well as new under growth which is rich in nutrients for a healthy wildlife.
Stump Removal:
By mulching, the vegetation can easily be processed while removing a lot of stages like site prep, as well as the hauling and cleanup. This will remove the need for many machines excavators, bulldozers, wood grinders and so on. Mulching equipment are known to work in tight areas, as well as steep slopes, and in poor weather conditions. Mulching equipment can easily clear the land of unwanted vegetation without disturbing the soil or other parts of the desirable area.
Land clearing in the past usually left the land with increased erosion by disturbing the soil, as well as removing the roots and the stumps. Mulching allows the soil structure to stay intact in most cases because the materials left by the mulcher on the soil will prevent erosion by becoming a barrier, and allow nutrients to be introduced back into the soil via the act of decomposition.
Forestry mulchers are mostly designed to take down smaller trees, based on size. These mulchers with heads that move on a vertical axis can work on trees that are up to, eight inches in diameter . For those mulchers with heads that move horizontally, they are created to work on trees that have diameters of up to 30 inches.
Mulching on larger vegetation may need different equipment such as a skid steer tractor attached with a larger mulching rotary drum. Mulchers are not designed to grind in rocky areas, and neither are their teeth made to grind against rock because it can dull or break the teeth of the mulcher rotary drum. Mulching reduces the amount of human labor, saves time, and is safe for the environment.
