I love your answer to the question I asked. My answer would have been Whitney Houston. She is either a siren or banshee. I would have paired her with Garrett or Charlie cannot decide who.
Twilight Request
Jasper/ Major x Female Reader
The reader has powers like Naruto Uzumaki but her nine tailed beast is a wolf that is white as snow. She has long black hair down to her hips when not put up. She knows many forms of martial arts and several languages and owns several katanas. She stands at 5 ft 11 inches. She likes reading mystery novels like Nancy Drew. Her favorite tv shows are Walker Texas Ranger, Murdoch Mysteries and Murder She Wrote. She goes to the Cullens when she gets word that Victoria has created an army of newborns and that a human is with them. She goes and offer her help to them.
At the training ground, she meets the pack. One of the wolves Paul says something rude to the reader. He goes to attack her but because of her power she has the strength to lift him and pin to the ground. She tells him his bad attitude is not welcome. Jasper/ The Major is her mate.
Feel free to add or change anything.

The moon hung low in the midnight sky, casting a silvery glow over the quiet forest. (Y/N), a striking young woman with long, flowing black hair that cascaded down to her hips, stood alone among the trees. At 5 feet 11 inches, she possessed an aura of strength and mystery that drew the eye. But it was her unique gift that truly set her apart—the nine-tailed wolf, as white as freshly fallen snow, that loyally accompanied her.
She had been living a solitary life for as long as she could remember, ever since her powers had manifested. Her childhood had been a blur of confusion and fear, as she tried to comprehend the extraordinary abilities coursing through her veins. The snowy wolf, her constant companion, was her only solace in those early days of isolation.
Throughout history, she had been known as the "snowbound savior." Legends and tales had spoken of a white wolf with nine tails that appeared when one was in dire need of help. Villagers would tell stories around campfires, passing down the folklore of this mystical guardian who emerged from the depths of the forest to aid those in their darkest hours.
But (Y/N) knew the truth. She wasn't just a legend; she was real, and she carried the weight of her unique destiny on her shoulders. Her existence was a secret known only to a select few, those who had witnessed her powers firsthand or had heard whispers of the mysterious white wolf.
Tonight, beneath the silver canopy of stars, (Y/N) felt a strange restlessness in her spirit. It was as though the air itself carried an unspoken message—a call for help that only she could answer. The bond between her and the nine-tailed wolf seemed to hum with anticipation.
With a determined look in her eyes, (Y/N) turned and headed deeper into the forest, her faithful companion padding silently at her side. She didn't know where the call for help originated, but she trusted her instincts. The "snowbound savior" was on the move once again, ready to face whatever darkness lurked in the shadows and to offer her unique gifts to those in need.
The dense forest welcomed (Y/N) as she ventured deeper into its heart. Here, she felt at one with the world around her, a connection that ran deeper than blood. She wasn't just a woman with extraordinary abilities; she was a guardian of nature itself.
As she moved through the ancient trees, (Y/N) could hear the soft murmurs of leaves, the whispers of the wind, and the gentle rustling of creatures hidden in the underbrush. Nature spoke to her in a language few could comprehend, and in return, she listened and responded with reverence.
Today, however, the whispers were tinged with urgency. The very earth beneath her feet seemed to vibrate with concern. (Y/N) paused, her senses on high alert, and closed her eyes to better attune herself to the natural world.
"What troubles you, dear friend?" she murmured softly, her voice a melodious harmony with the forest's song.
In response, the wind carried a somber message, leaves rustled in distress, and the faint echo of a distant waterfall sounded mournful. Nature was trying to communicate something of great significance.
The revelation came like a thunderclap in her mind—a coven of vampires was in danger, and their fate was intricately entwined with the lives of the humans in the town they resided in, as well as a nearby clan of wolf-shifters. The balance of their existence hung in the balance, and the very fabric of the supernatural world trembled with uncertainty.
(Y/N) felt a surge of conflicting emotions. She had distanced herself from the supernatural world, seeking solitude and anonymity after years of bearing the mantle of the "snowbound savior." Her past involvements had left scars both physical and emotional, and she yearned for a simpler existence.
Yet, as she stood among the ancient trees, a profound sense of responsibility washed over her. She had a duty to protect not just the coven of vampires but also the humans and wolf-shifters who unknowingly depended on their presence.
With a heavy heart, (Y/N) raised her eyes to the heavens, her voice resonating with unwavering determination. "Nature, you have my word. I will do all that I can to help. For the sake of balance, for the sake of those in need, I will step once more into the world of the supernatural."
The forest around her seemed to sigh in relief, a symphony of gratitude and understanding. The bond between (Y/N) and nature deepened, and she knew that her path was now clear. The snowbound savior had been called to action once more, and she would honor her commitment to protect and preserve the fragile balance of the supernatural world.
The clearing deep within the forest was a training ground for the local wolf-pack, and tensions were running high as the group practiced their coordinated maneuvers. Alice, the perceptive and clairvoyant member of the Cullen family, watched their movements closely, her golden eyes scanning the scene with an intensity that never wavered.
Amidst the flurry of leaping and lunging wolves, Alice suddenly froze, her gaze distant as if seeing something beyond the immediate present. Her eyes glazed over, and her hand moved with precision as she sketched something onto a piece of paper with a swift hand.
Jasper, who had been sparring with some of the wolves, noticed Alice's sudden stillness and approached her with a concerned expression. "Alice, what is it? What did you see?"
Alice didn't respond immediately, her focus locked onto the sketch she was creating. It was an image of a white wolf with nine tails, each one flowing gracefully behind it. The creature's ethereal beauty was captured in intricate detail.
Edward, always attuned to Alice's visions, joined them, his brows furrowing in curiosity. "Alice, what's going on? What did you see?"
Alice looked up from her sketch, her eyes wide with a mixture of wonder and uncertainty. "I saw something, someone, I'm not entirely sure," she admitted. "But they're coming to aid us."
Edward's expression shifted from concern to relief. "Good. We can use all the help we can get."
Paul, who had been listening in, couldn't hide his skepticism. "More vampires?" he grumbled.
Alice shook her head, her eyes fixed on her drawing. "Actually, it looks to be a shifter like you all."
Confusion rippled through the group until Alice displayed her sketch for them to see. The wolves gathered around, their eyes widening in disbelief.
Sam, the pack's alpha, gasped as he recognized the image. "The snowbound savior," he breathed, his voice filled with astonishment. "But she's just a legend."
Before anyone could respond, a powerful howl pierced the air, resonating through the forest. It was a howl that carried an undeniable presence, one that demanded attention and respect.
Jasper turned his head toward the sound, his eyes narrowing as he listened. "Guess not," he murmured, his voice tinged with intrigue and a touch of apprehension.
As the echoes of the howl faded into the distance, the wolves and the Cullens exchanged uncertain glances. The arrival of the snowbound savior, a figure of myth and legend, had suddenly become a tangible reality. The balance of power in the supernatural world was about to shift, and none of them knew exactly what to expect.
The ground beneath their feet trembled violently, and at first, the Cullens, along with Sam's pack, believed it to be a catastrophic earthquake. Trees swayed, and the very earth seemed to roar with anger. But what followed was beyond anything they could have imagined.
From out of nowhere, a colossal figure emerged, towering over the treetops, and causing everyone to gasp in astonishment. An 836-foot white wolf, with nine magnificent tails that swirled like a majestic blizzard, stood before them. The sheer size and beauty of the creature left them breathless, their hearts pounding with a mixture of awe and trepidation.
For a moment, the forest fell into a hushed stillness, as if nature itself held its breath in the presence of this enigmatic being. Then, as if guided by an unseen force, the colossal wolf began to shift, its form flowing like liquid moonlight.
In mere seconds, the towering wolf transformed into a striking woman, fully clothed and with long black hair that cascaded down to her hips. Her piercing eyes, as ancient as the earth itself, regarded the assembly with a mixture of wisdom and curiosity.
"I suppose you must all be the ones of whom nature speaks," she remarked, her voice carrying a melodious quality that resonated with power.
Carlisle, always the composed and gracious host, stepped forward. "I beg your pardon, but who are you?"
The woman offered a warm smile, one that seemed to hold the secrets of the universe. "I am (Y/N)," she introduced herself. "Nature has warned me of impending danger to this town and the nearby clan of wolf-shifters. It seems our paths were destined to intersect."
Edward, ever the communicator of the family, stepped forward to explain their situation. "A vampire named Victoria is planning an attack with a newborn army. They seek revenge because we killed her mate some time ago."
(Y/N) nodded with understanding, her gaze distant for a moment. "I sympathize with her loss, but I will not allow her to bring death into this town."
As the conversation unfolded, Jasper, who had been watching (Y/N) intently, felt a sensation he hadn't experienced in centuries. It was the undeniable pull of the mate bond, a force that tied him to this extraordinary woman. His gaze remained locked on her, and his heart raced with a newfound intensity. In that moment, he knew that (Y/N) was not only the snowbound savior but also the missing piece of his own existence.

BEGGING for any kind of tom hcs. or him and jane. or him and becky.
Beg no longer because here they are!!
Hatchetfield Omegaverse Headcanons: Tom Houston!!
Tom is a Type 2 Alpha. He presented when he was 15.
He thought that he would marry Becky Barnes. He even called her his mate.
That is until he enlisted in the military and she was accepted into Medical school.
Tom was the one to break things off. He didn't want Becky to feel forced to maintain a long distance relationship while he was away.
Smells like oak trees.
Started dating Jane while he was on leave. Like many military families, they got married rather quickly because he was due to be deployed again
His best friend in the military died in combat right in front of him. That was when his symptoms of PTSD began to emerge.
He has night terrors of his time as a soldier and wakes up screaming most nights.
Afraid to talk to a therapist about his issues because he believes that it could mean that he's not fit to raise Tim alone.
Before Jane passed he could be quite the joker. He loved helping Tim pull small pranks on Jane.
Resents Emma for leaving because he knows how much the distance broke Jane's heart.
He prays that Tim will never want to follow in his footsteps and join the military.
Does everything he can to discourage him from doing as such.

That poll about power outages is WILD to me. Most people are replying with like IDK an hour or less than a day or MAYBE that one time a day.
And my answer is 21 days. And it's just the extreme difference in living somewhere with a Natural Disaster Season and not.
So okay I'll tell the story of the 21 days. It's also my very first memory (collectively, a series of memories.) (To be clear I've had other power outages but not THAT long. I've only been ground zero for a big hurricane once. Remind me to tell you my Tropical Storm Alison story sometime tho.)
So Hurricane Alicia hit Galveston and then Houston in August 1983. I was four. It will be the 40th anniversary this year.
At the time my family was living close to the Port of Houston, because my dad worked in the power plants in that industrial area. So my very first memory is hunkering in my parent's bathroom, with an electric lantern and a radio, listening to the storm hit the port a few miles away. And then the radio stopped, just went to static. (Some of this is my mom's account blended with my memory, to be clear.)
Tumblr media
The storm passed over us and at dawn we emerged to see the damages. I remember it vividly. The sky was purple and orange. The street was a river and there were entire trees floating down it. I've seen a lot of storms and I've never seen that kind of pure destruction. But it was only trees. We were lucky.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Yes these photos being Black and White Historical Images makes me feel ancient thanks. I promise we had color film.)
Anyway, after that, the only problem was there was NO POWER. All the power lines were down, poles and all. And it was AUGUST in Texas.
I remember holding ice in a towel against myself as the only way to get cool.
Then power started being turned on in bits and pieces in the area. The first place to get power that we knew was a dentist office belonging to a friend of my parents. So we all moved into the dentist office. Like four sets of parents with eight or so kids. Sleeping on the floor of a dentist because it had air conditioning. Me in my Strawberry Shortcake sleeping bag.
Then my grandmother's apartment got power, so we moved out of the dentist to a one bedroom apartment. My parents, my grandmother, me and my teenage brother. All in two small rooms. I remember...arguing.
Then, finally, 21 fucking days later the power at my house was turned back on.
I'm tempted to say it's because it was 40 years ago or because it was Texas or because it was a poor neighborhood that it took so long.
But honestly, sometimes all the infrastructure gets knocked down and you have to rebuild the whole system from scratch and it takes time. I'm not sure it would be a whole lot shorter today.
My family was without power after Hurricane Ike for a week+ and that was a nice neighborhood without any significant damage. (I had left the city by then.) And most of my coworkers went without power for a solid week after that one and we are 100 miles further inland. (My electric co-op stayed up, though, because it came from another direction. Also stayed on during that terrible freeze that took the state out a couple years ago. Small decentralized community-owned power ftw.)
So yeah, losing power has always just been a thing. Like occasionally you just have a named storm come through and wreck your shit. It's wild to me that people live places where the planet doesn't just try to kill you occasionally.

clearly the wonderland stuff has hit critical mass because it’s 6 AM and i’m lying here wide awake trying to line up thoughts in order of which ones i want to write out most except i keep bumping into more SO LIKE. send help i am losing my grip
- kernel of a thought i’ve been gnawing on for a while now that there’s a pattern to the wonderland allusion that i can’t quite put my finger on yet. but it’s like—there’s a sort of temporal wobbliness to what and when that feels like it might be something but also just continual swirling it all around D4, D6 and D7, looping in the aaiw stuff and the red queen by constructing new associations (the queen of hearts was the red king, the duchess’s baby becomes the jabberwalker, the cat leads to hatter leads to hatta, the caterpillar lives in the forest where ruby loses her ‘name’, the beach is the garden is the pool of tears is the island for hunting the snark (<- are the mice the bellman’s crew lol. what are they hunting) and like the connecting thread here is mirrored pairs, the tweedles and hatter/hatta and the immanent reflection of the self in mirror-written jabberwocky, with the cat emerging as both the cheshire cat and humpty dumpty to the jabberwalker’s poetry (<- which draws another circle around neo and the jabberwalker in that the cat belongs to the duchess and the duchess is fanatically concerned with meaning in a way that sits kitty-corner to humpty dumpty’s determination not to let denotative meaning get in his way) and then there’s this undergirding idea of ascension and like—never imagine yourself not to be otherwise than what it might appear to others that what you were or might have been was not otherwise than what you had been would have appeared to them otherwise. the you you wanted to be when you were still you. it’s a matter of perspective, i’m afraid. & they want to get to the tree but can’t but the intertextual layer of the narrative has them oscillating back and forth between primarily D6 and D7; they are so close to winning the game but they can’t see the forest for the tree—and the tree functions like looking glass gardens and perhaps more saliently like the red queen, in that alice wants to meet the red queen but cannot find her until she turns about-face and walks away. (“her tree” huh.) (the blacksmith is the tree is the queen; all the ways about here belong to her and, of course, a cat can look at a king. or a queen.)
- the speaker, the subject, the jabberwock; the knight, jaune, the jabberwalker? (<- also occurring to me suddenly that the reason the only critters from the first stanza not present in the marketplace are the raths is, the duchess’s baby turns into a pig—and a rath is a sort of green pig—and neo is both lost and driven by wrath—and her constructs have recently gained the ability to outgribe.)
- in light of the jabberwalker being the story’s [unwritten, unfinished] ending i am feeling SOME TYPE OF WAY about specifically houston!worst day of my life bc like. man. “once upon a time/i knew who i was/some of it was true.” “i feel as if i’m caught between/what i say and what i mean” “could there be someone else to blame/for why it always feels the same/inside this woman i became” MAN.
- actually yeah no no more equivocating someone on the writing team saw this musical during the houston run. i don’t care who i don’t care to confirm i just know in my heart where all the brainworms live. what’s your title/what’s your purpose :)
- c o r n w i n k l e
- laughing hysterically forever about what this implies about ozlem OH YOU MEANT DIVORCED DIVORCED. LOL. LMAO
- ahem.
- wonderland—more precisely hunting of the snark—has a particular invocation of the rule of three (anything said thrice is true) and given the obvious fun rwby could have with an idea like that i’m wondering if we’ll see it repeated in the ever after in some capacity, whether as a literal narrative rule within the ever after or thematically. it occurs to me that it might have done already; “i am a huntress” is repeated thrice before crashing into ruby’s existential dread and uncertainty (<- the beaver loses count and mathematical panic ensues, which incidentally is also the part of the poem where the jubjub bird appears and, further incidentally for the bees people in the audience, is also the bonding moment in which the friendship between the butcher and the beaver becomes so homoerotic that there’s academic discourse about whether the beaver might actually be female, so make of that what you will.)
- the lively carpenter is not the blacksmith so Question Mark. the thing is the walrus and the carpenter is the tweedles’ poem so its inclusion fits the 4/6/7 focus and it connects to both the forest without names and the red king directly, and perhaps to the jabberwalker in the more roundabout sense that where jabberwocky is a poem about slaying a creature the walrus and the carpenter is about people behaving monstrously. who’s the carpenter and what are the oysters

Tree Service Houston, Texas: Your Guide to Professional Tree Care
Houston’s landscape is marked by its vibrant greenery, and trees are a vital part of maintaining this natural beauty. But owning a property with trees comes with its responsibilities. Trees, like any living organism, require regular care and maintenance to stay healthy, safe, and beautiful. That’s why seeking a reliable tree service in Houston, Texas is essential for both homeowners and business owners.
At The Jteam Tree Services, we understand the importance of maintaining healthy trees and providing expert solutions to handle any tree-related issues. Whether you need tree trimming, removal, or emergency services, our team is equipped to ensure your trees thrive in Houston’s unique climate.
Why You Need Professional Tree Services
Maintaining trees isn’t as simple as just watering them or letting them grow freely. Without proper care, trees can become hazardous to your property, or even your safety. Here’s why hiring a tree service in Houston, Texas is so important:
Tree Health Just like humans, trees can get sick. Various diseases, pests, and environmental factors can compromise the health of a tree. A professional tree service can assess the health of your trees and provide treatment, whether it’s pruning, fertilizing, or treating pest infestations.
Safety Concerns Dead or overgrown trees can pose serious safety risks. Branches can break off in strong winds, or a weak tree might fall during a storm, causing damage to property or harm to people. Professional tree services ensure that hazardous trees are removed or trimmed before they become a threat.
Storm Damage Prevention Houston is known for its unpredictable weather, from thunderstorms to hurricanes. After a storm, trees are often left damaged, with broken branches or unstable trunks. A professional tree service can help you assess post-storm damage and take action to prevent further risks.
Increase Property Value Well-maintained trees can greatly enhance the curb appeal and value of your property. Regular trimming and care make your trees look their best, creating a more inviting atmosphere for your home or business.
Tree Services Offered in Houston, Texas
At The Jteam Tree Services, we provide a wide range of tree service in Houston, Texas, tailored to meet the specific needs of our clients. Here are some of the most popular services we offer:
1. Tree Trimming and Pruning
Tree trimming is essential for maintaining the health and aesthetics of your trees. Over time, branches can become overgrown, and deadwood can accumulate, which can harm the tree. Regular pruning ensures that trees grow properly and remain healthy.
Trimming also helps:
Remove branches that pose a safety risk.
Improve sunlight exposure and air circulation for the tree.
Enhance the tree’s overall appearance, making it look more balanced and beautiful.
2. Tree Removal
While we strive to preserve trees whenever possible, there are times when removal becomes necessary. Trees that are dead, diseased, or growing too close to structures may need to be taken down to prevent property damage or injury.
Removing a tree is a complex and potentially dangerous task. Our expert team has the experience and equipment to remove trees safely and efficiently, no matter the size or location.
3. Stump Grinding
After a tree has been removed, the stump is often left behind, creating an eyesore and a tripping hazard. Stump grinding is the process of removing the stump by grinding it down to below ground level, which eliminates the stump while allowing the area to be landscaped or repurposed.
4. Emergency Tree Services
In Houston, storms and high winds can cause trees to fall unexpectedly, creating dangerous situations. We offer emergency tree removal and storm damage cleanup to address these urgent issues quickly and efficiently. Our team is available 24/7 to respond to emergencies, ensuring the safety of your property and family.
5. Tree Planting and Maintenance
Beyond removal and trimming, we also offer tree planting services to enhance your landscape. Whether you want to add new trees to your yard or replace ones that have been removed, our experts can help you select the right species and plant them in optimal locations for healthy growth.

Why Tree Trimming Service in Houston is Essential for Healthy Trees
When it comes to maintaining the health and beauty of your trees, Tree Trimming Service in Houston plays an integral role. Regular trimming ensures that your trees remain healthy, visually appealing, and safe from the potential risks posed by overgrown or damaged branches. Whether you have large, mature trees or young saplings, professional trimming services are necessary to keep your trees in optimal condition year-round.
The Importance of Tree Trimming in Houston
Houston’s climate can be unpredictable, with heavy rainfall, strong winds, and occasional storms. This makes Tree Trimming in Houston even more important. Regular trimming helps reduce the risk of fallen branches, which could potentially damage your property or pose safety hazards. By removing dead, diseased, or overgrown branches, you improve the structural integrity of your trees, making them less vulnerable to storm damage. Moreover, trimming enhances the overall aesthetic of your yard, ensuring your trees look their best while adding curb appeal to your property.
Benefits of Tree Pruning Houston
Tree trimming is not just about cutting back branches for aesthetics; it’s also about Tree Pruning Houston, which focuses on improving the overall health of your trees. Pruning involves the removal of dead or diseased wood, which can be a breeding ground for pests and diseases. Proper pruning helps encourage healthy growth by allowing more sunlight and air to reach the core of the tree. It also helps maintain a tree’s natural shape and structure, which can prevent future issues and make the tree more resilient to environmental stressors.
Tree Care in Houston: The Role of Professional Arborists
Taking care of your trees goes beyond just trimming and pruning. Comprehensive Tree Care in Houston involves monitoring your trees for signs of disease, pests, and environmental stress. Trees require ongoing care, such as fertilization, watering, and, if necessary, pest control. Professional tree care services are designed to ensure your trees thrive in Houston's unique climate. Arborists can assess the health of your trees, recommend the right care routine, and handle any problems before they become severe.
Why Hire a Professional Tree Trimming Service?
While it might be tempting to tackle tree trimming on your own, hiring a professional is always the safest and most effective option. A certified arborist has the experience, knowledge, and proper equipment to trim your trees without causing damage. Incorrect trimming can harm your trees, hinder their growth, and even shorten their lifespan. Additionally, tree trimming often involves working with tall trees and heavy branches, which can be dangerous without the proper tools and techniques. Professionals ensure that the job is done safely and efficiently, leaving your trees healthy and your property protected.

H-Town Till We Drown
This is how a bubble ends: not with a bang, but a discount. It's begun. We're not ready.
ALEX STEFFEN
JUL 16
I’ve been talking about the brittleness bubble — the widespread and growing over-valuation of brittle assets, and their certain repricing as climate risks are acknowledged — since 2002. Now we are seeing the beginning of its end.
Over the next five years (ten at most) we’ll see it rip through exposed communities, shredding hundreds of billions of dollars of paper wealth and leaving in its wake something like the Subprime Crisis, topped with eroded streets, downed bridges, killer heat waves and mass-migration.
Houston is America’s bellwether.
J. David Goodman is reporting what’s going on there right now, in the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl. It’s tense. His piece ‘This Storm Has Broken People’: After Beryl, Some Consider Leaving captures the feeling of foreboding spreading in climate-battered places around the world; the feeling that what can’t go on, doesn’t.
Houston is no stranger to natural disasters, but living through two crippling power outages in two months has driven some in the city to consider what may be the ultimate evacuation plan: moving out.
The more powerful of the storms, Hurricane Beryl, devastated the power infrastructure over nearly the entire city. When it hit, thousands of people were already living in shelters and hotels, according to state officials, because they had been displaced by an earlier weather event, the spring thunderstorms that caused wind damage and flooding.
Driving around Houston, it can be hard to tell which of the storms that crashed through the city had mangled the highway billboards, torn out the fences or knocked down the trees still strewn along roadsides.
Everyone knows how long it took to get their power back from the first big storm — and when they lost it again. A second round of spoiled food. Of sweltering temperatures. Of emergency plans. In many cases, of repairs to homes that were damaged in the major May storm had yet to be finished when Beryl arrived as a Category 1 hurricane.
For some, it was too much.
People are worried. They’re fearful in a way they haven’t been. That’s because they’re starting to see the world around them as it actually is: a world in the grips of a terrible crisis whose like we’ve never seen before; a world where things no longer work the way things have always worked.
The response, predictably, has been a mix of rage, defiance and collapse.
Consider these excerpts from Beryl was the weakest a hurricane could be. Why does it feel like Houston isn't the same? by Sarah Smith, in the Houston Chronicle.
These lines resonate with the passions and griefs of a city whose sense of its own value (or even habitability) is breaking down. (The same piece also manages to only obliquely mention the climate chaos and unsustainability that are the major drivers of that crumbling stability — Houston, after all, being America’s oil town.)
Beryl advances on us Monday, delivering 84 mph punches. Telephone poles topple. Roofs collapse. Buffalo Bayou swells until it kisses the bottom of the tree canopies. Streets drown. The winds roar. Power snaps out. We crouch in our innermost rooms.
We are the fourth-largest city in America. We are the so-called energy capital of the world, and today, we are powerless.
The heat index climbs to 105; at least 1.8 million wake up without air conditioning.
None of the disasters that have rolled through in the past decade has been so singularly devastating that we fled en masse. Instead, we strain under the weight of flooded-out cars and warped wallpaper and drenched family photos and chicken turned sour in silent freezers. Our cars get clipped at intersections with broken lights and, as we sit in the repair shop, we wonder: Why are we still here?
Some of us are (proudly, foolishly, admirably) H-town till we drown.
Some of us ache with a new knowledge: One day — maybe not now, but one day — we will have to leave this place we love. The lives we envisioned for ourselves here, we worry, cannot hold against what we know will come.
We begin to grieve the futures we wanted.
That last line is a perfect summary of the tragedy of personal discontinuity.
When we come to see that the world isn’t as we were taught to expect it would be, we also see that our own lives aren’t going to be what we dreamed. I’ve spoken with hundreds of people who’ve gone through this loss of cherished hopes. For many, it’s shattering.
Now whole cities are going through this experience. Houston won’t be the last. Indeed, the planetary crisis is not yet done with Houston… or the hundreds of other frontline communities around the world.
I can tell you what is happening, right now, in places all around the world where reality has slammed through the roof like a fallen tree: a reckoning. Folks are measuring their options, weighing how long they can wait, calculating how much of a loss they can bear, trying to figure out where they might live instead.
Does it even make sense to repair our home? Will the insurance cover enough of the cost to be able to sell it, maybe at a discount? Will we even have insurance in a few years? Will the next storm turn this city into a buyer’s market, as more people look to relocate, and homes flood the market — or will it be the storm after that? If we wait a few years, will there still be buyers, and if so will they demand fire-sale prices? What will our town be like, if home prices crash, the economy falters and everyone who can leave has left? Where would we go? Where can we afford to go? Should we leave now, before others start relocating in greater numbers? What will happen to us if we wait too long? Will our kids be able to afford some degree of relative safety? How do we make a path for ourselves and our loved ones, in a world that’s suddenly hard to understand?
Millions of us are already wrestling with these thoughts, and discussing these worries with our family and friends. These thoughts are starting to take form, in “For Sale” signs, moving trucks and GoFundMe campaigns for relocation expenses. This is only the beginning.
A lot of us will take less than we thought we could expect, out of fear that if we wait, we’ll get far less than that.
We’ll offer our old lives up on a discount, hoping to fund new ones before time runs out.
And that is how the bubble ends.

More Democrats Urge Joe to Go (Washington Post) Most Democrats nationwide say that President Biden should end his reelection campaign based on his performance in the presidential debate two weeks ago, according to a Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll. The poll results contradict Biden’s claim that only party elites want him to step aside. He has said that positive interactions with supporters on the campaign trail have helped persuade him to stay in the race after a debate in which he trailed off and occasionally appeared confused. But the poll finds that 56 percent of Democrats say that he should end his candidacy, while 42 percent say he should continue to seek reelection. Overall, 2 in 3 adults say the president should step aside, including more than 7 in 10 independents. The poll finds Biden and former president Donald Trump in a dead heat in the contest for the popular vote, with both candidates receiving 46 percent support among registered voters.
White House health cover-ups (NYT) The scandal is almost as old as the United States itself: The president has a health problem that he and his aides try to shroud from the public. Only later—years later, in some cases—does the severity become clear. The list of cover-ups is remarkably long. After a mysterious illness caused James Madison to miss meetings with senators in 1813, he blamed a watch malfunction. During Chester Arthur’s only term as president, he hid a kidney ailment that likely contributed to his death a year after he left office. Grover Cleveland’s aides lied about a surgery in 1893—performed on a friend’s yacht—to excise a tumor in his mouth. Woodrow Wilson spent his last year and a half as president debilitated by strokes while his wife and doctor secretly carried out some presidential duties. Franklin D. Roosevelt concealed the ailments that led to his death months after he won the 1944 election. Dwight Eisenhower’s doctor initially described his heart attack in 1955 as “a digestive upset.” John F. Kennedy’s aides lied about his Addison’s disease. Ronald Reagan’s administration hid the extent of his injuries after he was shot in 1981 and the signs of his dementia in later years. Donald Trump misled the public about the severity of his Covid illness. President Biden and his aides have become part of this presidential tradition. They have minimized and managed his public appearances to hide his age-related decline, according to reporting by The Times and other news organizations. Even as he has become confused or lost the thread of conversations more often in recent months, he and his aides have insisted he remained sharp and vigorous.
Rising Frustration in Houston as Millions Remain Without Power (NYT) The sun felt hotter than usual in Houston this week, as millions of sweltering residents emerged from the rapid thrashing of Hurricane Beryl to face a prolonged power outage—the largest ever seen by the city’s utility, according to the state’s lieutenant governor. The outages from the storm affected as many as 2.7 million customers across the state, mostly in and around Houston. Despite a promise by the utility, CenterPoint Energy, to restore power to one million customers by the end of the day on Wednesday, large swaths of the nation’s fourth-biggest city remained without power. The scale of the outages raised questions about whether enough had been done to prepare the city, just 50 miles from the Gulf Coast, for the kinds of storms that climate scientists predict will arrive with greater frequency. Beryl was not a particularly strong storm when it made landfall early Monday. But the hurricane struck at the heart of Houston with a ferocity that toppled trees into power lines and that knocked over 10 transmission towers, officials said.
Chileans confront a homelessness crisis, a first for one of South America’s richest countries (AP) The presidential residence of Gabriel Boric, the leftist millennial leader of Chile elected three years ago in the wake of public unrest over income inequality, shares a street in downtown Santiago with an overwhelmed homeless shelter. The sight of cardboard boxes and blankets strewn across sidewalks in Boric’s bohemian neighborhood serves as a sharp reminder of his struggle to fulfill his promise to give Chileans “a better life.” A pandemic-induced recession combined with a housing crunch and a major immigration influx have expanded Chile’s homeless population like never before. Over the last four years, the rate of homelessness in one of South America’s richest economies has jumped more than 30%, transforming the streets of a country that prides itself on its prosperity.
First F-16 jets heading to Ukraine after months of training and negotiations (Guardian) After years of waiting, Ukraine is finally ready to receive shipments of F-16 fighter jets, the supersonic fighter planes made in America that have been a key demand of Kyiv since the Russia-Ukraine war began. They will make their way to Ukraine from the Netherlands and Denmark with permission from the U.S. It’s unclear exactly how long Ukraine’s leash with the jets will be. The U.S. has repeatedly publicized its concern about how F-16s will be used by Ukraine, as using them to attack targets within Russia might escalate the conflict. However, recent changes allowing Kyiv to use American artillery to strike targets in Russian territory might reflect a change in policy by the White House.
High-Tech American Weapons Work Against Russia—Until They Don’t (WSJ) The Excalibur artillery round performed wonders when it was introduced into the Ukrainian battlefield in the summer of 2022. Guided by GPS, the shells hit Russian tanks and artillery with surgical precision, as drones overhead filmed the resulting fireballs. That didn’t last. Within weeks, the Russian army started to adapt, using its formidable electronic warfare capabilities. It managed to interfere with the GPS guidance and fuses, so that the shells would either go astray, fail to detonate, or both. By the middle of last year, the M982 Excalibur munitions, developed by RTX and BAE Systems, became essentially useless and are no longer employed, Ukrainian commanders say. Several other weapons that showcased the West’s technological superiority have encountered a similar fate. Russia’s success in electronic countermeasures—closely watched by China, with whom Moscow is believed to share some of its battlefield lessons in dealing with Western weaponry—poses a strategic problem for the U.S. and allies. Western military doctrine has long relied on a belief that precision can defeat mass—meaning that well-targeted strikes can cripple a more numerous enemy, reducing the need for massive expenditure on troops, tanks and artillery. That proposition, however, had not been tested in a major war until Ukraine. The introduction of Western weapons there showed that what may have worked against Saddam Hussein’s army, the Taliban or Islamic State guerrillas won’t necessarily perform against a modern military like Russia’s or China’s.
China: Cooking Oil and Food Safety (Nikkei Asia) An undercover report from Beijing News has sent shock waves through China, with an allegation that the trucks that ship cooking oil and syrup are also used for fuel and chemicals and are not adequately cleaned in between uses. Officials from the State Council’s food safety commission are investigating, and already the leading cooking oil supplier in the country, Yihai Kerry, saw its shares drop 8 percent at one point during trading, hitting a record low. It’s not the first time this kind of scandal has happened: Fuel tankers have been caught transporting cooking oil in 2005, 2011 and 2015, and a 2008 baby formula scandal roiled public trust in the food system.
Carnage at Gaza School Compound Adds to Mounting Death Toll at U.N. Buildings (NYT) The soccer ball went out of bounds and the goalkeeper was lofting it toward his teammates as dozens of people looked on from the sidelines of the courtyard. It was a moment of respite in the Gaza Strip—but it did not last. Before the ball reached the ground, a large boom shook the yard, sending players and spectators fleeing in frenzied panic. The Gazan authorities say that at least 27 people were killed on Tuesday in that explosion, which was caused by an Israeli airstrike near the entrance to a school turned shelter on the outskirts of Khan Younis, in southern Gaza. Philippe Lazzarini, head of the U.N. agency that helps Palestinians, UNRWA, said on Wednesday that it was the fourth strike in four days to hit or damage a school building in Gaza. Two-thirds of U.N. school buildings in the enclave have been hit since the start of the war, with more than 500 people killed, UNRWA said.
Where A German Truck Company Goes To Recruit Drivers: The Heart Of Africa (Die Welt) Ichaka Badayara was attending a lecture at a university in Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso, when a friend called. A German trucking company was coming to recruit drivers, he said: “That could be something for you.” The 21-year-old did not hesitate to submit his application. After a two-day selection process, Badayara was successful: He and 18 other candidates were chosen by the Cologne-based trucking company Emons to travel to Germany and begin a three-year truck driver apprenticeship. His visa has been approved, and all necessary permits from the German authorities are in place. “For me, this is a dream I’ve had since I was a child,” Badayara said exuberantly over the phone, in good German. But this dream job for Badayara is not even considered by many young people in Germany. Few industries face as a severe a personnel shortage as the trucking sector, which lacks 100,000 truck drivers. Companies have tried, unsuccessfully, to attract young people in schools, and in Eastern Europe, where interest is low due to high competition from other industrialized countries. The shortage of skilled workers could soon become the biggest threat to Germany’s economy, employer associations have warned. German ministers are increasingly addressing the issue during their trips to Africa.
America’s New Catholic Priests (NYT) On a sunny afternoon in May, Zachary Galante was sitting in a conference room in St. Francis de Sales Seminary with several other young men, talking about what it meant for them to choose the Catholic priesthood in the year 2024. The next morning, they would make lifelong promises of celibacy and obedience, and they were palpably elated by the prospect. “It’s a beautiful life,” Deacon Galante, soon to become Father Galante, said. There was a time where the church “maybe apologized for being Catholic,” he said later in the conversation. He and the other new priests agreed they were called to something different: advancing the faith, even the parts that could seem out of place in an increasingly hostile world.
Whale pod joins solo rower in the Atlantic, rocking boat and blowing bubbles (Washington Post) A British rower making a solo journey across the Atlantic Ocean suddenly found himself with plenty of company when a huge pod of whales surrounded his boat, in a stunning scene captured on video. Tom Waddington, a U.K.-based ski coach documenting his 2,000-nautical-mile journey to raise money for the mental health charity Mind, posted the encounter to his Instagram account. “What a special treat,” he said, watching the whales blowing bubbles and rocking the boat as they played around him, some 100 nautical miles off the coast of Newfoundland on Sunday. Waddington said he believed the pod comprised more than 1,000 long-finned pilot whales.

Beryl made landfall in southern Texas as a Category 1 hurricane on Monday, knocking out power to over 2.5 million homes and resulting in at least eight fatalities in Texas and Louisiana.
As of Tuesday night, more than 1.7 million customers, primarily in Galveston through Houston, remain without power, according to PowerOutage.us. Thirty-four utilities are reporting outages as the storm brought torrential rains and strong winds that turned roads into rivers, downed power lines, and caused trees to fall onto homes, roads, and vehicles.
Acting Texas Governor Dan Patrick announced on Tuesday that President Biden had approved a federal emergency disaster declaration for affected parts of Texas due to Beryl's devastation.
“This FEMA assistance will expedite the recovery process and help ensure the safety of Texans impacted by Hurricane Beryl,” said Patrick.

The emergency declaration allows for 75% reimbursement for debris cleanup across all 121 impacted counties in Texas, as detailed by Texas Division of Emergency Management Chief W. Nim Kidd at a Tuesday press conference.
While what remains of Beryl moves into the Midwest with reduced intensity, it still poses a threat of further flooding and tornadoes along its path.
Meanwhile, recovery and cleanup efforts in southeast Texas, particularly in the Houston area, are challenging due to extreme heat gripping the region. The heat index in Houston surpassed 100 degrees on Tuesday, with temperatures expected to remain in the 90s through early next week. This poses hazardous conditions for outdoor workers, the elderly, individuals with chronic medical conditions, children, and those lacking adequate cooling.
Heat-related illnesses, including heat exhaustion and stroke, become risks when the body cannot adequately cool down during prolonged exposure to high temperatures and humidity.
Tragically, at least two deaths from carbon monoxide poisoning related to generator use have been reported in Harris County, where Houston is located.
“If you are using a generator, ensure it is placed far away from living and sleeping areas,” warned Kidd, emphasizing that such fatalities are preventable.
Restoring electricity to heavily impacted communities will require a multi-day effort, according to Thomas Gleeson, chairman of the Public Utility Commission of Texas. In Galveston, city officials estimate it may take up to two weeks to fully restore power.
Texas utility CenterPoint Energy has faced more extensive damage than anticipated from the impact of Beryl, leaving over 1.3 million customers without service as of Tuesday night.
"The storm unexpectedly shifted course and inflicted greater damage on our customers, systems, and infrastructure than initially projected, resulting in outages affecting over 2.26 million customers at its peak," stated a utility spokesperson during a Tuesday evening briefing. This constitutes approximately 80% of CenterPoint’s customer base in the Houston region, according to company representative Paul Lock.

Earlier on Tuesday, Acting Governor Patrick emphasized the urgency for CenterPoint Energy to expedite power restoration efforts, acknowledging the challenging conditions faced by residents without electricity.
CenterPoint initially aimed to restore power to 1 million customers by Wednesday night, with full damage assessments expected to be completed by the end of Tuesday, as noted by company spokesperson Logan Anderson in an update to CNN.
During the evening briefing, Lock indicated that while a specific timeline for complete restoration was unavailable, the process would not be immediate. A comprehensive restoration plan will follow the completion of damage assessments.
Houston Mayor John Whitmire, personally affected by the power outage, assured residents that restoring electricity was a top priority for both CenterPoint and the city.
In neighboring Katy, Texas, resident Lizzette Varela expressed frustration over the uncertainty surrounding power restoration timelines, highlighting the challenges her family faces in securing basic necessities without electricity.
Meanwhile, Surfside Beach Mayor Gregg Bisso criticized CenterPoint for delays in restoring service to his community, where a majority of residents remain without power despite bearing the brunt of the storm’s impact.
As recovery efforts continue across southeast Texas, including at the Houston Zoo, where staff worked tirelessly to ensure animal safety and maintain operations during the outage, the region braces for ongoing challenges posed by Beryl’s aftermath, including potential flooding and tornado threats as the storm moves inland through the United States.
On Tuesday, the threat of tornadoes associated with Beryl escalated, leading the Storm Prediction Center to elevate the severity of severe thunderstorm risks to level 3 out of 5 for western Kentucky and southern Indiana.
Across the Ohio and Mississippi valleys, there is a level 2 out of 5 severe thunderstorm threat, primarily due to the potential for tornadoes spawned by these storms, as reported by the center. On Monday, Beryl generated fourteen tornadoes in Texas, Louisiana, and southern Arkansas.
As of Tuesday, approximately 23.4 million people are under flood watches, with flash flood warnings issued along the storm’s trajectory earlier in the day.

Heat advisories have been issued for roughly half of the U.S. population on Tuesday, encompassing both coasts, with particularly severe conditions along the West Coast.
A stifling heatwave is enveloping the West and is expected to persist for several more days, bringing temperatures that are 10 to 30 degrees above normal to certain areas.
Human-induced climate change is contributing to increasingly frequent and intense heatwaves worldwide, exposing communities to progressively hazardous temperatures.
