Long-distance internet cables in France have been cut in an act of sabotage, causing disruption to internet services across the country. This is the second disruption during the Olympic Games in Paris, after high-speed train lines were targeted in a series of arson attacks hours before the Games kicked off.
Marina Ferrari, France’s junior minister for digital affairs, said on X that in the early hours of Monday morning, multiple locations around France were affected by several “damages” that impacted telecommunications providers and have resulted in “localized consequences” to fiber optic services as well mobile internet connectivity. Internet companies confirmed the damage.
The French Ministry of the Interior, which oversees policing agencies in the country, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. French cybersecurity agency ANSSI told WIRED the problems are not linked to a cybersecurity incident.
At the time of writing, nobody has claimed responsibility for either attack. Officials have yet to identify any suspects involved in the cable-cutting sabotage, but they believe the disruption to train services could have been committed by people with “ultra-left” political leanings.
The incidents around the Olympics come at a time when Russia has been blamed for a string of disinformation targeting France and has also been linked to a series of potential sabotage attacks in Europe.
The second largest French telecoms company, SFR, appeared to be one of the most impacted by the vandalism. “Our long-distance fiber network was sabotaged between 1 am and 3 am last night in five different locations,” a spokesperson from SFR told WIRED. SFR says its maintenance teams are working on repairing the damage and said the impact on its customers was “limited.”
“Also, between three and eight other operators are impacted since they use our long-distance network,” the spokesperson said.
Nicolas Guillaume, the CEO of telecom firm Nasca Group, which owns the ISP company Netalis, told WIRED he believed the damage was “deliberate” and that ISPs serving both customers and businesses have been impacted. Several of the damaged cables, according to images shared on X by the CEO, appear to have clean cuts across them. Guillaume says it is likely that people opened the ducts where cables are stored and cut them. Internet company Free 1337 also confirmed it was working on fixing the damage.
While billions of people around the world use wireless connections, the underlying internet backbone is made up of cables traversing across countries and under seas. This infrastructure, which is able to automatically reroute traffic to limit outages, can be fragile and vulnerable to attack or disruption. EU politicians have called for internet infrastructure security to be improved.
But the sabotage is not the first time that internet cables in France have been damaged in potentially deliberate acts. At the end of April 2022, crucial long-distance internet cables around Paris were deliberately cut and damaged—causing outages that impacted around 10 internet and infrastructure companies.
In that instance, according to photographs published by telecoms companies, the cables appeared to have been surgically cut, all at around the same time, in three locations, to the north, south, and east of Paris. Thousands of people around Paris—and also some farther away from the French capital—were plunged into a temporary internet blackout as network operators rerouted traffic. “It is the work of professionals,” Guillaume said at the time.
Arthur PB Laudrain, a postdoctoral research associate in cyber diplomacy at King’s College London, says the most recent incident seems “less serious” than the 2022 outages. “Such actions are within the capabilities of ultra-left or ecologist and anarchist groups, especially if they benefited from insider assistance or knowledge (current or former rail or network workers),” Laudrain says. “However, we cannot rule out the fact that a state actor is encouraging, supporting, or directing such domestic groups to create plausible deniability of their involvement.”

“Scouting perimeter” whispered a female voice into the telecom.
Samus Aran has received a new assignment a day ago to investigate this newly discovered planet, the entire biosphere thick with ancient tropical jungles and foliage.
As she effortlessly traverse the dense terrain, thanks to her superhuman makeup, she thought back to the mission description before her arrival to this planet
Mission description
Females of various races gone missing on this planet for a day or two…
Then returning to their groups or respective campsites, mentally altered, and wanting to return to the sites where they were held for more of the “experience”
Further questioning of the “victims” were met with confusing answers, or replies dodging the main questions
Nothing is known as of yet of the nature of the “experience”, the process altering the victims, or if there even is a perpetrator involved
Current mission
Female researcher from the Galactical Botanist Foundation research camp gone missing in less than 7 hours
Imperative: Find and retrieve the researcher. If a perpetrator is involved, dispose them.
The mission itself seems straight-forward yet rescuing the researcher seems like an unnecessary step in her mind
"They always turn up safely anyways. I don’t even think it is necessary for me to find her…I highly doubt I will be able to stop any mind altering tricks performed on her considering it has already been a whole day…"
However, curious about the nature of the mission, Samus performed some digging on the victims to discover classified information.
"These ladies are leading happier lives, not to mention all of them are seemingly more satisfied about something, almost as if they had a hidden desire fulfilled…"
She wondered about this. Why would the federation hide such information from her?
As Samus continues navigating the surroundings, she kept a cautious mind of anything that might seem out of the ordinary, noting the flora and fauna of her environment which were relatively non-threatening or dangerous. The largest predatory creature she encountered was no bigger than a bobcat.
She spent what seems to be hours traversing the jungle with no signs of any other pecualir lifeforms or the missing female researcher.
Ba-bump-
Samus paused in her steps. For the moment she thought she heard something but wasn’t quite sure.

Am I-Am I hearing a heartbeat?
Ba-Bump
There was no mistaking it; she is hearing the sound of a heart booming in the forest.
She dashed towards the sound and with each passing second the sound grew louder.

"Fast heart rate…why is there a heartbeat sound in the middle of the jung-"
Before she completed the thought, she arrived to the answer. She stood at the entrance to a large groove, with a large plant in the middle of the groove and extending at the base of the plant was what seemed to be self rotating root pads almost like a treadmill and running on the pad was the female alien researcher.
For a few seconds Samus was stunned at the scene, before clearing her mind to analyze the situation better.
The female researcher was completely topless with only her long pants to cover her blue skin. There were three suction pads adhering to her chest, two on the top of her breast and one below her left breast and a larger suction cup attached to the middle of her chest in between her breast. The pads were attached to vines traveling back to the alien plant which seems to be broadcasting her heart sounds throughout the groove. Samus could see the researcher jogging with sweat glistening down her skin yet the facial expression on the researcher was not one of pain or despair, but rather tiredness from the running with some hint of pleasure.
Samus scanned the organic alien apparatus and noticed no capture devices or anything holding the “victim” hostage. The researcher’s other clothing was next to the self rotating roots.
"Wha-What is going on?! What is the purpose of this? Why is that tree doing this to the captives? And the researcher…she is not…running away? Is she under some kind of mind control?"
Samus then thought of the descriptions of the victims: everyone of them could return to their daily lives with no interruption or deficits to their routines, yet everyone of them had a longing to return to this planet for the experience again…
"Do-Do they actually like this experience?!"
Samus’ mind whirled with more questions than answers as she witness the scene in front of her, the fast rhythmic echoes of the researchers heartbeat surrounding the groove, the jogging topless blue alien attached to organic pads traveling back to the mysterious alien tree, and why the tree is doing this.
No matter, the mission is cleared. Retrieve the researcher, disposed the perpetrator.
Samus prepared her arm and charged her cannon ready to fire at tree.
A few seconds and the cannon is charged up.
Samus takes aim and fir-Her mind was interrupted by an intruding thought.
"The tree isn’t actually doing anything wrong, is it? I mean, these ladies are returned safely, some even leading happier lives from their newfound interest…"
Before she could make any more decisions, a vine grabbed her arm cannon, causing the laser to misfire. Before she could have time to respond, another vine came knocking her out. Darkness came over her.
She slowly regained consciousness. As her vision clears, she saw a creeping tentacle wrapping around her helmet. Subsequently, the vine yanked it away from her head, causing Samus to instinctively hold her breath. She noticed that she was suspended in mid air with vines around her shoulders and ankles. The tentacles continue to wrap around pieces of her top armor pulling away pieces revealing the blue zero suit underneath. She gasped and tried to reach for her armor, and took a breath of the air around her- it was clean. As a matter of fact, it was refreshing.
The tentacle then reached and begin pulling away at the zero suit. Samus desperately held onto the vines to prevent it from revealing her skin underneath but to no avail as the vines successfully ripped the top suit off. She tried covering up her breasts and two more vines wrapped around her wrist pulling them apart revealing her topless chest to the groove. Samus was breathing heavily now and could feel her heart pounding under her chest. Slowly the tree extended a vine with what appears to be an organic stethoscope at the end, placing it on the pulmonic region of her chest.
In an instant she could hear her own heartbeat coming from the tree itself but not like the earlier scenario where it was booming throughout the groove like that researcher’s heart was.
"Wait! Where is the researcher?"
Samus looked around noticed no signs of the researcher anywhere.
"Did she left already? How long was I knocked out for?"
Samus was still suspended in mid air, with both her and the alien tree continually listening to her heartbeat. Minutes passed and Samus feels her willpower waning, as she continually listened to her own heart. The stethoscope head then moved to the tricuspid region between her breast and her heart sound grew louder. Slowly, Samus began to relax more as her own slowing heart rate begin to calm her down.
Sensing this, the tree began to lower Samus down to ground level and allowed Samus to stand on her own. In that instant, Samus thought of running away and escaping, yet somehow she continued to stay, enticed by her own heartbeat and this mysterious ritual.
She now stood topless in the groove facing the tree, with the organic stethoscope still placed between her breasts. Samus continued to keep listening, curious about the experience
"This is very peculiar but I don’t see what would draw those ladies to want more…"
The stethoscope head moved away but not completely as it hovered 2 feet in front her Samus. She then noticed 3 smaller pads attaching to her chest: two above each breast and one below her left breast.
She could then see a small pseudo-organic screen with an EKG displaying her heart rhythm.
Two more vines motioned towards her pushing her down towards the ground. Samus could almost understand what it wants and lay down on her back. The ground then shifts upwards tilting her at a 45 degree angle towards the tree. The stethoscope head was placed onto her tricuspid region again, and once again she could hear her heart coming from the tree. She was still confused as to the tree’s intention but she laid there. Several minutes later she closed her eyes, her chest feeling the moist organic pads, and her ears listening to the sounds from her chest
Ba-bump Ba-bump Ba-bump Ba-bump Ba-bump
She laid on the raised ground listening to her heart with tree for what seemed like ages.
"This is very calming…"
Suddenly, the ground lowered, surprising Samus and raising her heartrate slightly. The stethoscope head pulled away completely into the tree. The tree’s roots grew out towards Samus forming a treadmill like pad. She stepped onto motionless pad and waiting for it to move just like she previously saw. The tree then produced a larger size organic stethoscope similar to the one on the researcher previously. The head nestled in between Samus’ breast and in that moment, she can hear her heartbeat booming throughout the groove just like the researcher before except her own heart rate was lower.
The self revolving root pads begin to move but only fast enough that Samus needs to walk slowly to keep up. She heart rate climbed.
As she continued to walk on the pseudo-treadmill, she was slowly enthralled by the sound of her own heart, her mind blurring and slowly forgetting her main objective on this planet.
Minutes passed, and the root pads begin rotating faster causing Samus to walk more briskly to keep up. Her own heart rate climbed with the increased physical activity.
A few minutes passed and Samus was being enticed by her rhythmic organ in her chest
"Faster, I want to hear it beating faster…"
Almost as it reading her mind, the revolving roots moved faster, and now Samus found herself having to jog faster to keep up. The activity itself was not strenuous. Nay, Samus have done physical feats that would push other humans to the edge.
Her heart is racing and her rapid beats are filling the groove.
"This is exactly the same situation as that researcher was…Ah, I see now… I see why they wanted more…"
By now, the root increased speed, forcing her to run at a very fast pace faster than most humans could not handle. It almost seems as if the tree knows of Samus’ physical ability and now set the speed to match her skills.
The groove boomed with Samus’ racing heart, beating at a rate that could injure or even kill a normal human. But Samus was no normal human.
She did not felt exhaustion or pain but ecstasy. As she continued running, she closed her eyes let the sound of her heart drown her ears
"Yes! That’s it! Harder! Faster!"

The revolving root pads begin to slow, and Samus begin slowing down as well. Eventually it came to a complete halt.

But what drew Samus’s attention was the middle of the green humanoid chest, and while “she” had decent sized breast, Samus could clearly see her transparent skin in the middle of her chest revealing the humanoid’s only red colored organ, her beating heart.
Samus stopped her sexual activity, stunned by this new development. Before Samus could say anything, the humanoid leaned forward and locked lips with Samus
Astonishment eventually gave way to pleasure as Samus also begin kissed back caressing the humanoid’s cheeks.
The humanoid then reached down and begin sucking Samus’ breast, while one hand begin inserting a finger into Samus mouth, the other hand begin inserting a finger into Samus’ vagina.
Lost in pleasure, Samus closed her eyes and began sucking on the alien finger while rhythmically moving her hips to the humanoid’s finger, her heart rate skyrocketing and booming from intense pleasure around the groove.

The groove was once again filled with the sounds of heartbeats, but not of Samus, but the humanoid.

Samus came back to her consciousness, waking up from what seemed to be a wonderful dream. Looking down on her nude figure confirmed that it wasn’t a dream. The humanoid is nowhere to be seen, probably now within the tree again. A large vine carried her armor pieces and zero suit, placing them beneath her feet.
She suited up, and continued her path back towards her ship. As she flew out of the planet, she begin thinking up of excuses to deliver to her superiors. She highly doubts the researcher will rat her out because just like that researcher and all the other females, Samus too wants more.

Millions endure record cold without power; at least 16 dead (AP) A winter storm that left millions without power in record-breaking cold weather claimed more lives Tuesday, including three people found dead after a tornado hit a seaside town in North Carolina and four family members who perished in a Houston-area house fire while using a fireplace to stay warm. The storm that overwhelmed power grids and immobilized the Southern Plains carried heavy snow and freezing rain into New England and the Deep South and left behind painfully low temperatures. Wind-chill warnings extended from Canada into Mexico. In all, at least 16 deaths were reported. The worst U.S. power outages were in Texas, affecting more than 4 million homes and businesses. More than 250,000 people also lost power across parts of Appalachia, and another quarter million were without electricity following an ice storm in northwest Oregon. Four million people lost power in Mexico. Pelosi says independent commission will examine Capitol riot (AP) House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Monday that Congress will establish an independent, Sept. 11-style commission to look into the deadly insurrection that took place at the U.S. Capitol. Pelosi said the commission will “investigate and report on the facts and causes relating to the January 6, 2021, domestic terrorist attack upon the United States Capitol Complex … and relating to the interference with the peaceful transfer of power.” In a letter to Democratic colleagues, Pelosi said the House will also put forth supplemental spending to boost security at the Capitol. An independent commission along the lines of the one that investigated the Sept. 11 attacks would probably require legislation to create. That would elevate the investigation a step higher, offering a definitive government-backed accounting of events. Still, such a panel would pose risks of sharpening partisan divisions or overshadowing President Joe Biden’s legislative agenda.

Reid’s phone has been ringing a lot lately, with calls from interest groups, friends and potential candidates themselves, all craving one thing: an ambassadorship. The former Senate majority leader then picks up the phone and dials Steve Ricchetti, one of President Biden’s top advisers, who for months has been fielding requests for plum positions. “There’s very few political jobs that bring the dignity of being an ambassador for the United States to a country. It’s a very prestigious position,” Reid said. But he suggested the would-be envoys shouldn’t hold their breath: “I think with the impeachment going on and trying to get the Cabinet filled, I think people should be understanding that things are more important than the ambassadorship right now with the president.” It is a sweepstakes that comes along every four or eight years—intense jockeying in public and private as the well-heeled and well-connected seek coveted positions that come with lavish housing, a staff of chefs and an expectation that the U.S. envoy will put the digs to use for parties. India’s dramatic fall in virus cases leaves experts stumped (AP) When the coronavirus pandemic took hold in India, there were fears it would sink the fragile health system of the world’s second-most populous country. Infections climbed dramatically for months and at one point India looked like it might overtake the United States as the country with the highest case toll. But infections began to plummet in September, and now the country is reporting about 11,000 new cases a day, compared to a peak of nearly 100,000, leaving experts perplexed. India, like other countries, misses many infections, and there are questions about how it’s counting virus deaths. But the strain on the country’s hospitals has also declined in recent weeks, a further indication the virus’s spread is slowing. When recorded cases crossed 9 million in November, official figures showed nearly 90% of all critical care beds with ventilators in New Delhi were full. On Thursday, 16% of these beds were occupied.

The targeting of the relatives of Mohamed Soltan, a human rights defender based in Northern Virginia, marks the latest attempt by the government of President Abdel Fatah al-Sissi to silence its critics living abroad, according to political opponents of the former military chief. Sunday’s arrests came roughly three months after five of Soltan’s relatives were released from prison, days after Joe Biden won the presidency. They had been forcibly taken from their homes in June after Soltan filed a lawsuit in the United States against former Egyptian prime minister Hazem el-Beblawi for his role in inflicting torture on Soltan when he was imprisoned in Egypt.
