Tired, you got up from the soft hotel double bed. You felt a tightness in the neck area and soreness on the stomach and both legs; nevertheless, you got up from the huge, white mattress, and then slowly made your way to the spacious bathroom. The noise woke the sleeping woman on the other side of the huge bed, who rubbed her eyes quickly, then looked at you with her still hazy gaze.

“... Where are you going, Y/N?”

“I have to pee.” You answered truthfully to her. “I have to go anyway, it’s four in the morning and you have a performance today.” You added, looking at the twenty-three-year-old and she just sighed, then shook her head in denial.

“Stay with me, Y/N.” The sheets fell off her naked body, and you tentatively glanced at her breasts and collarbones. A little lower, right next to the sternum, you noticed some hickeys that you made a few hours ago. You only nodded your head in response. “Thank you.” She replied a bit calmer, you could say happier, and you closed the wooden bathroom door, immediately looking at your own reflection in the wide mirror.

Your hair was a bit messy, your naked body was covered with even more marks and scratches, also your face showed unimaginable fatigue; you had dark circles under your eyes and a gray skin. Additionally, your heart was beating erratically and your breathing was stray.

After using the restroom and washing your hands with soap, you also washed your face with cold tap water. You did the same to your neck and nape, which gave you considerable relief and soothed your raging thoughts.

The only thing you and Layla had in common was sex and eating expensive dinners together in hotel rooms.

You were an ordinary medical student who loved peace, study, warm tea and oatmeal cookies – it was pure coincidence that one day you ran into this talented woman in the shopping mall; then you didn’t recognize her and agreed to meet again. There was a bit of awkwardness between the two of you at first, but but a few meetings later Layla opened up about her career, band, fans, needs, family, and loneliness. That day you had sex for the first time and you decided to continue it; the young female singer was satisfied that sexual intercourse with another woman would not cause her problems, and she admitted to herself that you were definitely a better partner than all the previous men she slept with – you were always gentle, attentive, and listened to her requests and commands. You both appreciated each other in bed.

It was predictable that you would fall in love with her after a few months of dating in hotel rooms or your little apartment. It wasn’t a bad thing, but you knew that this relationship wouldn’t go any further and you would always be friends with benefits.

You left the bathroom, touching your hair in the process, and then went back to the bed where the blonde haired girl was waiting for you. As soon as you covered yourself with the satin duvet Layla snuggled into you and you into her. The scent of cherry shampoo hit your nose, and you just closed your eyes.

“... Goodnight, Y/N.”

“Goodnight, Layla.”

Although you will never be together and your feelings will never be shown to the world, you were glad that at least now you could have her close to you.

Nana Episode 33 - Hachi's Choice

Isn’t that the movie about the woman who lost a child?

Ah... Yasu and the blonde from Trapnest are still hanging out... neat neat neat.

Now it’s Yasu’s job to comfort Cool Nana after she learned of Beloved Pooch Nana’s pregnancy. The blonde from Trapnest gracefully exits. Good for him, he’s an irrelevant character so it’s nice for him to know when to not have screentime.

Yeah, this is basically what he’s like. 100%.

Anyway, Takumi walks into Beloved Pooch Nana’s apartment to find that she has vanished. That’s fun.

Where has she gone, you ask? Junko and Kyosuke’s house. Eh? They’re not irrelevant yet? Originators of the Blackface that they are? But they’re not even in the opening...!

That’s an interesting euphemism.

Junko and Kyosuke are being good supportive friends for Beloved Pooch Nana. Man, what have they been up to lately? There should be a spinoff show about Junko and Kyosuke. It could be called... “Originators of the Blackface”. I would watch that.

I wonder how Beloved Pooch Nana’s explanation of why she didn’t want an abortion reads to people left-of-me on the issue. Does she seem poorly written/written as stupid? I am not of the mind that abortion is always wrong, mind you, but I am of the mind that it is often the act of killing a human being (exceptions: stillbirth-type scenarios), and should be treated with the appropriate weight. From what I can tell there are those who hold not only the opinion that abortion is never incorrect, which I already think is a little blase, but even perhaps, the opinion that abortion can be a moral imperative even in cases where the wellbeing of the mother is not especially threatened? Simply because the child may have an uneasy future? Forgive me if I seem like I’m demonizing people I disagree with. That’s not my intention. In my experience, humanity as a whole is capable of a wide range of viewpoints... and personally, I am very stupid, so I don’t have the necessary intellect to gauge the “normality” of viewpoints. I’m just focusing on deciding which viewpoints I think are true. All that is to say... while I think it’s valid to kill a human being for things such as, say, being so bad at plans that he only does murders instead every single time (see my One Piece readthrough for more details), or causing a child to be pregnant (hopefully won’t come up in One Piece), making everyone’s life a lot more complicated does not automatically a scoundrel make. As for “taking the child’s potential suffering into account before deciding so quickly to avoid abortion”... your outlook on the world would have to be awful bleak to so easily resort to a mercy-killing. Despite the miseries of society, it is a common human trait to seek to alleviate suffering. It’s because of traits like this that survival could be said to often turn out to be worth it.

Wait, Junko is now insisting that BPN cast aside Nobu and become “faithful” to Takumi due to the way circumstances have worked out such that Takumi has pledged to help raise BPN’s child? For the sake of... what, exactly? Monogamy? That doesn’t seem that important. BPN’s life is one thing, and BPN’s child’s life is another. Neither one should chain the other into a particular mode of operations. The mere existence of a child should not tie that child’s mother to that child’s father. Especially in scenarios where the father is going to be heavily distanced from both! Where it DEFINITELY shouldn’t matter much! As long as BPN isn’t behaving duplicitously or maliciously, she should be able to pursue whatever social relationships she wants, with the subjects and statuses of her choosing. And you know who has even less say on this matter than an unborn child (if such a thing is even possible, given fetuses’ common proclivity for not speaking)? Junko, that’s who...!

Hm, I may have spoken too soon when assessing BPN’s thoughts on the option of getting an abortion as something someone lefter-than-me would see as bad writing. It seems like Junko’s final conclusion was that BPN had a choice between getting an abortion or breaking up with Nobu, and chose incorrectly when she chose the former. Personally, I would be inclined to reject the dichotomy outright. As I’ve already said in different words, I think personal freedom, at least within the confines of that which one is able to achieve, trumps most other things. The simplest solution is not always the best one. The most societally-acceptable solution is the best one even less often, thanks in part to the miseries of society which I mentioned earlier. If BPN were inclined to seek out a complex solution to a complex problem, even if doing so were to breach the boundaries of social norms, I really don’t think Junko had the right to discourage her on principle.

I’m sick of talking about this.

I think tomorrow I’ll just make two One Piece posts instead of having to deal with this again. Nana will return after that.

My dad has a certain distaste for long-haired men as a general concept, and he certainly isn’t married to my mom, so there are a few key differences as well. Although the fact that my dad isn’t married to my mom may have more to do with my mom’s (not unreasonable) reaction to his unfaithfulness than to his particular dissimilarity from Takumi, so in that sense, maybe it’s less that there are key differences between my dad and Takumi, and more that there are key similarities between my mom and Junko? Although I find it highly unlikely that my mom would ever be the origin point from which blackface would be spawned into the world. Hmm, much to think about... I miss the days when my stupidity allowed me to empty-headedly fall facefirst through Nana episodes with nothing of note to say about them.

how would you think ren and nana being the mother and father of a child, how would they count on caring for and educating a child?

I’ve seen a couple people making this question around lately and I think it’s one with many different answers depending on many different circumstances like Ren’s addiction, Nana’s not wanting children, their careers, and their relationship problems and more.  For the purposes of answering you I will give you two different scenarios.  

First the sad, unhappy one.  In an AU where Ren did not die and my theory of Satsuki being biologically Nana and Ren’s child, this would leave Nana pregnant at the time when the manga went on hiatus.  And unfortunately, I do not see this being a happy time for Ren, Nana, or child.

Ren is dealing with his addiction and even if he is determined to quit and was able to intercept Reira safely, a recovering addict needs love, support, and a stable environment.  The added stress of a pregnancy in the mix would complicate everything else going on and even if the pregnancy gave Ren more determination to quit, Nana’s doubt and unwillingness to become a mom would add just more friction between both their desires and needs and ideal futures for themselves.

Because it’s not just that Nana doesn’t want to be a mom and Ren wants kids - Ren also indicates a desire for Nana to say home with the kids.  Nana doesn’t just not want kids - she values her career above all else, even her relationship with Ren.

Adding a baby to their current struggles would be awful.  Nana would resent Ren and the child, Ren would resent Nana.  And the paparazzi watching it all. It’s a volatile situation and no one is getting out of it untraumatized, child especially.

On the other hand. Let’s say Ren doesn’t die and Nana isn’t currently pregnant.  Ren gets space and time to work through his addiction, Nana gets to find out about it and have whatever negative reactions she might have to that and then decide to be supportive.  And then the 2 continue to work on their MANY issues of abandonment and everything else.

So let’s say... Five years down the road, Nana decides she would be okay with being a mom but she still doesn’t want to risk her career.  Well in 5 years time, I am sure Takumi’s plans for Trapnest have reached their peak and that Trapnest is reaching it’s natural conclusion so that Reira can have her own solo career (assuming Takumi and Reira haven’t addressed their whole deal) so Ren has done what he wanted to do with Trapnest and has matured enough that he’s like, heck yeah *I’ll* be the stay at home dad.

I can see in this scenario the two of them as parents might work out!

And honestly, even though Nana is afraid to be a mom and might not feel comfortable around kids, I’ve always seen her as the kind of person that kids think are really cool and funny. So as a mom, I could easily see that translating into her being the really cool mom that her kids love even if she’s the stricter parent compared to Ren. Any and all kids they’d have would be mommy’s kids lol.

Meanwhile Ren is just happy living with a family for the first time in his life and experiencing things he never did before and making sure his kids never miss out.  He’d attend all the parent teacher conferences and sports festivals and teaches the kids guitar and bass.

Actually I am remembering now that I did sorta write a Nana and Ren AU where they do ultimately have kids lol... It’s a different scenario and isn’t really about them having kids but it’s the 5th chapter to my fic “Seven Ways the Earth Turns and I Find You” my AU exploratory NANA fic. My least favorite one, but one I had to write.

But yeah, I don’t think Nana nor Ren are ready for kids for an abundance of reasons where the story left off. And yes, I don’t think Ren is ready for kids either. He thinks he is, but he’s still much too immature and not even a good partner to Nana.  Nana not wanting children is the biggest barrier though, and it is something I hate about many stories that always need to portray women’s ultimate goals being found in having kids.  Nana doesn’t need to have children to have a fulfilling life, just as it is fair if Ren wouldn’t find fulfillment if he doesn’t. But that just means they really got to communicate and talk, about their differences in desires for making a family and just... everything else they got going on.  It’d be A LOT of work for them to make it to being a good parenting team but hey if Takumi and Hachi can do it.

My thought about how Nana could possibly end

Cause even though I LOVE Ren and Nana together, I have to admit that their love was toxic since they depended so much on each other. So what I hoped for in the future is that Nana will learn that she will be fine even tho the most important person in her life is not here. She still has a lot of people that love her and she should focus on that while still grieving Ren. I don’t know if I want her to die as well cause that would mean she hasn’t really grown mentally in those 7 years she was away. Since she has been by herself for so long now, I would hope that she has learned how to be independent. Not in a financially cause she been that since she was young way but mentally.

@renee90​ I think we have to make a distinction from what you asked me in the previous question and what you’re asking me now. If you ask me how I would like Nana to end or how I see Nana’s ending, my answer is the one I gave you in the other post (considering my personal sensations and how things were going in the manga before it stopped). If you ask me how many possible scenarios there may be if we think about Nana’s ending, my answer is different. The first is personal, the second is more objective. So if you ask me if there’s the possibility that Nana will come back to Japan and continue living her life with her friends, of course there is (at this point after Ren’s death I expect everything from Ai Yazawa), but if you ask me if I would like to see this ending my answer is “not so much”. I love Nana Osaki, but I think that if we consider the status in which she was when the manga stopped and all the things she sais in the present time, her suicide will be the more logical option. She said that she went to England to find a place to die and the only thing that is keeping her to commit suicide is the thought of Hachi, who has saved her life. But then she also said a quote that in my opinion is the most significative to understand what she’s feeling at the present time:

She clearly admit that she’s struggling a lot because she wants to see again Hachi and the others, but at the same time she has so much fear that if she came back things will return as they were before and she would do the same mistakes. Plus, there is Ren…she wants to meet him so desperately. In that quote she said she would like to be a fish in her next life, in order to swim in a small fishbowl just her and Ren. She doesn’t include anyone else in her little world, just her and Ren: that’s what makes me think that her desire to reach Ren is stronger than anything else. Ren is the most important person of her life, it’s what Takumi is for Reira. Plus, we have to consider the most important thing: Nana isn’t a manga created to describe how happy and funny is life. Nana represents the real life, a life that is hard and gives you nothing for free. I don’t expect to see a happy ending considering all the story. 

I see your point and I have to admit too that their relationship was toxic, but let’s be honest: in all the toxic relationships that Yazawa described in Nana (Takumi / Hachi, Takumi / Reira, Reira / Shin), Ren and Nana’s love is the most real, strong, incredible. A love like Nana and Ren is hard to find, they loved each other so much and it was a TRUE love compared to the one of the other toxic couples I’ve mentioned above. I think that if they have had the possibility to work on their relationship and grow up, their love would have been amazing.  I think Nana knows how to be fine alone, because let’s not forget that Ren left her to join Trapnest and she spent 2 years of her life alone without him and she managed to do it. She continued her life, she worked hard to realize her dream and she showed to Ren that she could have been a great singer too. But it was different: knowing that the person you love is still alive, seeing him/her on television or magazines, secretly hoping to meet them again one day…it’s totally different from knowing that you won’t see this person ever again. Plus, we have also to consider the situation between them: when Ren died he and Nana still had to make up from their argument, so I guess Nana has also regrets for not having spent time with him when she could have done it. And regret can devour you from the inside.  It’s true that she has people who loves her, but she doesn’t have the one she loved the most anymore…I guess it’s an awful sensation. 

I also don’t think that if she will commit suicide it means she hasn’t matured. Nana knows how to be independent, I mean she has managed to live 6 years alone in another country where she had never been before, she didn’t know anyone and she didn’t speak perfectly the language. The problem is that Nana is insecure. And believe me: when you’re insecure it’s really hard that you become confident, even if 50 years will pass. I spent all my 28 years of life hearing people to tell me to be more confident about myself, but still now I’m so insecure inside even if I try to not show this to other people. We are human being, so we are made to be full of flaws. If we want to say that Nana isn’t grown mentally, then we have to say that also some other characters aren’t:

- Hachi is still married to an husband who left her and their daughter to go to England, after he had betrayed her so many times in the past. She clearly doesn’t have the happy marriage that she had always dreamt, but despite this she refused to divorce (even if she will be perfectly able to grow her daughter and her son alone since she’s a very good mom)

- Reira, despite hating Takumi, continues to live with him and she probably still loves him. She refused all the men who tried to save her to remain at the side of her “executioner”

- Nobu still loves Hachi after all these years and after all the things that happened. He seems unsable to find another woman and go on.

All this to say that everyone has something that they can’t overcome, it’s normal, it’s how life goes. The thing that Nana can’t overcome is Ren’s death. It doesn’t matter how much time she will spend alone or how much she will show to be independent: the more she will be alone, the more she will realize that Ren won’t be by her side anymore and this thoguth kills her inside.  There are a lot of quotes at the end of the chapter in which Nana admits herself to have grown up mentally and to be able to accept things that in the past she couldn’t. The only thing she can’t accept is that Ren left her behind. He promised her that he would have taken her in the grave with him, but he didn’t. 

By the way please consider that this is only my personal opinion based on what I have perceived reading the manga. I can be totally wrong, only Yazawa knows how things will end (maybe Yasu will have long hair LOL XD). And we have also to consider a thing that can change everything: the manga stopped in a crucial point that left us many doubts. What is happened that lead Nana to decide to leave Japan? What is Ren’s present for Nana’s birthday? Has Nana spoken to her mom? If we could only know the reason why Nana left Japan, maybe we’ll have more clue to speculate a possible ending.

@words-in-air 😭 my heart always got so fluttery whenever there was a hopeful scene of their relationship but also so sad cus I knew yazawa would just crush it in the next chapter 😭

when nana saw ren for the first time after 2 years and said that after she retires she does want to go back and live in their old apartment and be with him. or when she goes to his Tokyo apartment for the first time and he asked if she’d want to live with him and she said maybe. and definitely that one where she got a cell phone so they could talk while away from each other (ren called her every day when he was in London) 😭

I do agree that in their own ways they really really love each other (they wanted to die for each other) but so much just got in the way (and a lot of times they couldn’t get out of their own way and be happy). getting a phone and calling ren first is actually HUGE knowing nana, but in the end she’s still too afraid of committing too much, I also think because she’s afraid of being hurt again.

it also got in her way that nana thought of trapnest as her competition and as the thing that took away what she loves. there’s definitely a world where blast and trapnest could’ve co-existed for nana and ren (also if not for the complications with takumi/hachi, takumi/reira, reira/shin) and they could’ve rocked out for the golden years of their youth and retired together to their little apartment by the sea 😖

I think there’s a quote from yazawa about how relationships don’t need to be perfect, and how the dreams we chase and the reality chasing us are always parallel they never meet: I think ren’s perfect scenario would’ve been that he continues with trapnest and nana marries him and has kids with him (he even said he’s wanted her to quit singing), and nana’s ideal would’ve been to have a music career without impediments and then can retire feeling fulfilled. I wish both of them could’ve compromised on what they wanted more because their relationship didn’t need to be perfect for them to love each other.

so i recently re-read Nana which was (and still is) one of my favorite series of all time. and since then i've been feeling the nostalgia (and PAIN) i've been finding kindred souls who are also holding out hope that yazawa ai will pick it back up at some point.

BUT in my journey of reconnecting with the series and characters, ive read a lot of things about nana and ren's relationship and i can't not weigh in. (nobody asked but here goes XD)

don't get me wrong, there are a LOT of things both of them could've done better in their relationship, and many people say that when ren left to join Trapnest that was the fatal turning point for them, but tbh i think their relationship was doomed from the beginning.

nana said herself when she first saw ren play the night they met; she felt something more like envy/jealousy than love. she always admired ren and idealized him, perhaps more than she loved him.

as a result (paired with nana's very painful history of being abandoned by her mother), ren was more of a savior in her eyes than a boyfriend.

he taught her to play guitar, encouraged her to sing and express herself, and gave her a home. and because she always looked up to him, she couldn't help but feel anxious and inferior in some way when she was with him. i don't think she ever thought she was good enough for him and unwittingly created a relationship that was more about competition (and proving herself) than love.

for ren; similarly to nana, he had a very painful past of being abandoned by his parents and grew up on the streets by himself. perhaps he saw in nana a kindred spirit, and wanted to take care of her (in his final moments, he literally mistook a stray cat for nana); he took her in.

throughout the series, we see him hoping for a family that is with him always, for nana to want to be with him of her own volition, and to have children with him. (but he knew that wasn't what nana wanted, and he struggled throughout their relationship after their reconciliation with this fact).

from nana's perspective, i think ren leaving was so much more than a betrayal of her band, and a boyfriend leaving her: i think when he left, it made her feel not only abandoned, but like he was throwing it in her face that she wasn't good enough (he went to join a better band, in a bigger city, with a more talented female singer).

and it made it worse for her that even after their reconciliation, ren continued to choose Trapnest over her (leaving her behind when the tabloids were publicizing gossip that would only harm her reputation, refusing to help nana out of pent up frustration and jealousy when shin was arrested, in the end prioritizing reira over her).

but when ren joined Trapnest, i think that he found in them an even greater family bond than what he had with Blast. back in his hometown, while he loved the Blast members, it isn't the same as when he joined Trapnest. with Blast, it was all a bit of fun, almost child's play for ren, but he could've accepted that as long as he and nana were happy.

when he joined Trapnest, i think that was when he started to feel the true weight of camaraderie; of having a group of people with a bond stronger than friends or colleagues; they were soldiers together (ren had literally referred to the employees of cookie music working with Trapnest as takumi's soldiers). here, there was a profound kind of devotion and mission that gave him a greater sense of purpose in life, so i can understand why he would make choices that placed Trapnest above nana.

again, this is not to say that at any given moment in the series, nana and ren couldn't have made better decisions or said or done something different. but i think due to the fact that nana's feelings towards ren were always that of an admiration kind of love (rooted in jealousy and feelings of inferiority) instead of pure, unconditional love (which is not her fault, because no one ever really taught her how to love unconditionally). and that ren was destined to discover and devote himself to something bigger than himself (and nana). and the fact that both of them were so young but the stakes were too high; their relationship was doomed from the beginning.

A soft song resound in the bathroom as you brushed your hair. You just finished your P.E. lesson and before going home you wanted to improve your appearance a bit and wash your tired face with a bit of cool water. It was a sunny Friday, and you hastily tossed your hairbrush into your black backpack as you continued singing and headed for the exit of the ladies room. At the same moment, a young teenager literally jumped out of one of the cabin; her hair was auburn, her eyes were dark, and her face was covered with a great blush and a wide, sincere smile.

“Y-Your voice!” She screamed pointing her finger at you and you narrowed your both eyes. “You sing so beautifully, God!” She said with an even bigger smile and you just thanked her shyly. You were about to leave the room, but she grabbed your hand. “W-Wait! I have a question.”

“Yes...?”

“Would you like to come to my band’s rehearsal? We have a meeting today at 3 pm. You sing really amazing and it would be great to have you in our group.” She said to you and you just nodded (not entirely convinced).

“I don’t know... I’ve never performed in front of others...”

Yui just giggled as she let go of your hand and then bowed.

“I would be very pleased if you could try, umm...?”

“Y/N.”

“Y/N, you won’t be disappointed. I promise.”

Despite the uncertainty, you appeared in the room where (according to Yui’s words) the rehearsal of the band of the girl you met a few hours ago was supposed to take place. You hesitantly knocked on the door and then quietly entered.

You heard the sound of a bass guitar and at the same time noticed a beautiful dark-haired girl holding the instrument in her hands. Next to her stood a blonde one with a calm expression and a delicate smile, and even further away you also noticed a young female drummer with short, brown hair. Another brunette was standing next to Yui, and they were both talking furiously about something, gesticulating with their hands.

“... Y-Y/N!” Suddenly, your new friend noticed you, and you waved at her, greeting the rest of the girls. “This is the girl I was telling you all about.” She whispered, though you heard her excited voice perfectly. After a short conversation and getting to know each of the four girls, you sat down with them at the wooden table.

“So... should I sing something to pass the test...?” You giggled, feeling much more comfortable with all than few moments ago. Yui and the other students just laughed, nodding their heads in an affirmative tone. Four teenagers wanted to see if it was true that you had an unearthly voice.

You didn’t even realize that at that very moment you were sitting next to your future best friends with whom you will spend much more time than just breaks at school or rehearsals in one of the rooms on the first floor.

You've finished the last piece of your fiancé’s new haircut while adding some white accessories to it. Ren’s long hair was perfect for you to practice doing different hairstyles; braids, buns, high ponytails, curls, waves... His hair was always delicate and smelled of coconut shampoo and raspberry lotion.

The man, of course, couldn’t complain about such care – your warm hands, calm touch, sometimes even a scalp or neck massage were salvation for him after a long day of work or quick training. Your presence, the characteristic aura hovering around you, your light scent of baked apple or mint mist was... perfect. He loved it.

“... I finished, my love.” You smiled, and the man finally opened his both eyes looking at his reflection in the mirror that proudly hung in your huge, light bedroom.

“Oh gosh.” He said in surprise, observing every strand on his head carefully, then looked at you enchanted. “I look great, huh? Tell me.”

“Best in the world, sir.” You admitted with a slight chuckle on your heart, and the fair-haired man looked at the hairstyle one more time, gently touching it with his fingertips. Not wanting to ruin his hairdo, he removed his hand and then turned to you; his lips moved to your forehead and after a moment you felt a hot kiss on your skin.

“Thank you, baby.” A short while later, you felt another sweet kiss, but this time it was a quick but tender kiss right on the lips. The young man’s scent instantly hit your nose, and you melted under the short caress. At the very end, you felt only a gentle touch on your left cheek and the top of your head, and then Ren pulled away from you, rising from the white, soft carpet. “I’ll make us supper. Rest a bit, dove. Okay?”

You nodded, getting under the covers and turning on your phone.

While you were watching TikTok, Ren was preparing the two of you sandwiches with your favorite ingredients and two teas with a beautiful, distinct aroma. Evening like evening; a quiet routine was best for you.

If you could choose the end of the manga, how would you like it to end? How would it end Ren was alive and how would it end if you continued the story as it’s now?

Hello @renee90 and thank you for this question! ♥ Soooo hard to answer...I still don’t have after all these years a clear idea of what end I would like to see, because after Ren’s death I felt like Nana Osaki: “time has stopped moving for me”. But I will try to answer.

1) How would the story has ended if Ren was still alive? Honestly, to answer to this question I would have need to understood better Ren’s intention. I discussed this a lot with @komatsunana and I still don’t know what Ren wanted to do when he met the accident. Did he wanted to leave Trapnest or did he want to remain? Did he want to broke up with Nana to give her freedom or did he want to make up with her? Did he want to go to the hospital or to a rehab or did he want to try to quit drugs all alone with no help? Too much questions and no answer... But my “dreamy” ending if Ren would have survived to the accident was to see him go to Nana and make up with her, giving her the present for her birthday that I think was a song written for her, quit drugs with a professional help (or at least with Nana and his friends help even if I see it difficult since his level of drug addiction was soooo high) and quit with Trapnest and all the bullshit of music industry that lead him to feel unhappy. He would have written songs for his beloved Nana and maybe they would have left Tokyo to return in that little snowy town where they were happy even if they play their music in little clubs with a little audience. 

2) How would the story has ended if we continue from where the manga stopped? I have two possible scenario in my mind:

- Hachi goes to England to meet Nana and after they talk and spend time together, Nana will suicide. But she dies in peace, knowing that she had managed to talk one last time with her beloved Hachi. Or maybe she follows Hachi in Japan to see even the others but after meeting them one last time she will suicide and finally reach her Ren.

- Nana will finally found the courage to return to Japan and face what she has left behind, including Hachi and her friends. She will spend time with them and she will feel happy, but she still misses something that can’t be replaced in any way, so one day she will suicide herself to stay with Ren but happy to know that she had people who loved her.

In any case I see that Nana will be really happy only if she manages to see Ren again and the only way she has to do it is dying. It’s so sad that I’m crying while writing this but it’s true, she admitted herself that since his death she has never stopped to run towards him. Hachi herself said that at Christmas she doesn’t pray for angels or Santa Claus but for the night when Nana and Ren will meet again...:(
