music & vocaloids month ; twenty-second day.
synopsis: You’ve always loved to sing, and probably if Yui hadn’t overheard your singing in the school toilet... no one would have ever heard your huge talent.

includes: female reader ft. yui hirasawa, mio akiyama, ritsu tainaka, tsumugi kotobuki & azusa nakano {k-on!}
A soft song resound in the bathroom as you brushed your hair. You just finished your P.E. lesson and before going home you wanted to improve your appearance a bit and wash your tired face with a bit of cool water. It was a sunny Friday, and you hastily tossed your hairbrush into your black backpack as you continued singing and headed for the exit of the ladies room. At the same moment, a young teenager literally jumped out of one of the cabin; her hair was auburn, her eyes were dark, and her face was covered with a great blush and a wide, sincere smile.
“Y-Your voice!” She screamed pointing her finger at you and you narrowed your both eyes. “You sing so beautifully, God!” She said with an even bigger smile and you just thanked her shyly. You were about to leave the room, but she grabbed your hand. “W-Wait! I have a question.”
“Yes...?”
“Would you like to come to my band’s rehearsal? We have a meeting today at 3 pm. You sing really amazing and it would be great to have you in our group.” She said to you and you just nodded (not entirely convinced).
“I don’t know... I’ve never performed in front of others...”
Yui just giggled as she let go of your hand and then bowed.
“I would be very pleased if you could try, umm...?”
“Y/N.”
“Y/N, you won’t be disappointed. I promise.”
{ ・゚✧ }
Despite the uncertainty, you appeared in the room where (according to Yui’s words) the rehearsal of the band of the girl you met a few hours ago was supposed to take place. You hesitantly knocked on the door and then quietly entered.
You heard the sound of a bass guitar and at the same time noticed a beautiful dark-haired girl holding the instrument in her hands. Next to her stood a blonde one with a calm expression and a delicate smile, and even further away you also noticed a young female drummer with short, brown hair. Another brunette was standing next to Yui, and they were both talking furiously about something, gesticulating with their hands.
“... Y-Y/N!” Suddenly, your new friend noticed you, and you waved at her, greeting the rest of the girls. “This is the girl I was telling you all about.” She whispered, though you heard her excited voice perfectly. After a short conversation and getting to know each of the four girls, you sat down with them at the wooden table.
“So... should I sing something to pass the test...?” You giggled, feeling much more comfortable with all than few moments ago. Yui and the other students just laughed, nodding their heads in an affirmative tone. Four teenagers wanted to see if it was true that you had an unearthly voice.
You didn’t even realize that at that very moment you were sitting next to your future best friends with whom you will spend much more time than just breaks at school or rehearsals in one of the rooms on the first floor.

Binge-Watching: Grand Blue Dreaming, Episodes 10-12
In which the show ends on its best stretch of episodes yet. Somehow.
Where Was This Hiding?
I mostly enjoyed these last couple episodes of Grand Blue Dreaming.
I need you all to understand the gravity of that statement. Over the course of this show, I have had a miserable time. I’ve criticized it from so many angles and gotten furious at so many moments it was almost suffocating. It has been a chore to sit through. But against all odds, I actually mostly enjoyed these last couple episodes. There are, like, actual good jokes throughout! Like Kouhei and Iori’s competition to make each other slide off a speeding banana boat ending with them both in the drink! And the hard cuts between Aina’s romantic view of what’s happening on that boat versus the absurd and/or boring reality (”It’s so stable!”) Or the goofy way the seniors sit on top of an over-crammed car, and Kouhei’s dejected reaction when their “upgrade” turns out to just be a pickup truck (”It feels liberating”)! Or the self-assured stupidity of the guys lying down in the truck to keep from being spotted and make the passerby think it’s carrying corpses instead! There’s, like, actual comedy! With setups and punchlines and comedic timing that’s got some punch behind it! It’s not enough to turn the show around, not by a long shot, but if this is the level of quality Grand Blue had from the beginning, we would be having a vastly different conversation now. And the fact it took this goddamn long for the show to reach an acceptable level of quality is just pathetic.
Look, beyond the gross sexism stuff, Grand Blue’s biggest problem is that its comedy has just not been that good. It’s forced contrivances on top of forced contrivances with no logical buildup, all for the sake of shoving our faces in the cheapest punchlines imaginable. There was no point to the humor besides “HAH. BOOBS. GET IT. IT’S FUNNY BECAUSE BOOBS. “ Or, “HAH. GAY. GET IT. IT’S FUNNY BECAUSE GAY.” And that’s not a recipe for making me laugh. Whenever Grand Blue’s comedy works, it’s because it actually decides to make the comedy about something beyond that baseline, whether expanding characterization or just throwing the cast in a unique scenario that leads to more unique punchlines. And these episodes are the biggest concentrated stretch of that we’ve ever gotten. Hell, even some of the frat boy humor actually works! Not all of it; there’s still dumb shit like Azusa and Nakano sexily... walking out of their rooms, because I guess tired and disheviled is sexy or something, and then they walk right back into their rooms and the scene goes on as if they never existed in the first place. Even for tasteless fanservice, that was random and pointless. But the escalating misunderstandings over everyone thinking Chisa and Iori are into some weird fetish shit when he’s just asking her for diving practice (”You’re doing some kind of advanced activity for adults!” “No, this is for beginners.”)? That genuinely made me laugh.
Hell, there’s even kind of a fascinating moment where Asuza outright offers to have sex with Iori, and instead of spiraling into a misunderstanding, he turns her down and they slip into a more candid conversation about their current lack of relationship status. For once, it’s a sexual moment that feels true to their characters- Asuza’s always been pretty sexually outgoing, and Iori’s not confident enough to commit to even a fling- and it even allows a touch of awkward intimacy that lets them grow closer naturally. I’m serious, it’s shocking how effective this moment was at making me interested in their relationship all over again. The fact that this show’s ending just as it’s finally turning into something overall decent pisses me off to no end. Why couldn’t it have been like this the whole time? If you were capable of being at least good enough, why did you hold out until it was too late to make a difference? I don’t freaking get it.
Out on the Water
Perhaps the worst disappointment, though, is the lack of actual diving content in this supposedly diving anime. Look, maybe I wouldn’t mind as much if the show were better at being a raucous comedy on its own merits, but Grand Blue’s best moments have all come from when it actually leans into being a show about diving. That moment in the undersea aquarium in episode 2 was the most likable Iori ever was. When the final episode lean back into that side of him, he suddenly becomes a character I can somewhat enjoy. He’s still a scared newbie and is embarrassed he doesn’t know more, but he genuinely wants to get better, and he’s got a genuine appreciation of everyone for helping him on that path. Hell, his bonding moment with Chisa on the boat is the first time they’ve actually felt like, well, cousins. You know, family? Not strangers who creep on each other and sexually humiliate each other with no consequences? And the technical details of diving we do learn, scarce as they are, make it clear the writers know what they’re talking about in regards to the sport. That moment where the gang makes Aina feel welcome after her bad experience in her last club by talking about how diving’s a group activity and no one gets left behind? That was sweet! In a better show, I really would’ve liked that moment! Unfortunately, it’s in this show, and it rings pretty hollow to say that Aina’s finally escaped a social circle that regularly mocked her and considered her worthless, and has now joined this much better social circle that... calls her Cakey on the regular and strips her naked against her will. Because I guess it’s okay when the protagonists do it. Blah. One day, we’ll get an actual good diving anime, and we can forget this garbage ever existed.
Odds and Ends
-”We’re going somewhere else, okay?” Aina, this show does not deserve you.
-”It doesn’t matter how much sleep he gets, he’s still an idiot.” Well, you’re not wrong.
-”I made myself black out.” I... you know what, you should’ve finished the job.
-...okay but do fish actually have those kinds of names in Japanese and why
-”It’s the best medicine!” Congratulations, you’ve regressed medical research to the 1700s.
-Yo, is that Nana freakin Mizuki singing the ED? Hot damn!
-”Isn’t something wrong here?” “Oh, sorry.” *buckles seatbelt* sdfkjhsf fucking hell why is this show actually funny now
And with that, we’re finally done. Woof, this was a rough ride. Expect my series reflection later tonight, as well as what show will take its place!
