Reading A Lady's tranquility at the moment. Well I was so impressed with Poor Monk I had to find other work of Shi Jing to read and turn out the only one that translated in Thai and also historical is this. So I got hooked by how calm this lady, Jiang Xuening, is and how she deals with all the misfortunes of herself and her friends and suitors from her past life. Also I read this for my yandere appreciation phase, still haven't seen much of Xie Wei so I can't say for sure if he really lives up to my expectations.

Hello hello! Thank you for this question, and my apologies for the delay in answering! Happy new year ^^

For the winter break: Trey mentions not being able to visit Riddle as he is not allowed at his house, inviting Riddle to see him at his family's patisserie, saying, "I'm sure Chenya will drop by to hang out, too."

Riddle says, "I'm going to try talking with Mother some. I don't know if she'll listen, but even so."

In Book 5 Chenya says, "You never did drop by over the holidays" and Riddle responds, "I appreciate you reaching out to me," insinuating that Chenya might have tried to get in contact with Riddle over the break, but Riddle was ultimately not able to see him or Trey.

Trey says that "winter is the patisserie's busiest time of the year," so it is possible that he spent at least part of the break helping his parents with their shop!

Cater says that he would rather go home with Trey than to his own house (because of his sisters) but after Trey threatens him with "running (him) just as ragged," Cater ends up going to his own home, instead.

Ace says there wasn't much to do at his house during the break besides play video games, and I'm not sure we hear anything about what Deuce had been doing when they were called back to NRC by the prefect.

Leona goes home reluctantly with nothing but his wallet and smartphone, saying that "homework can wait until after break."

Ruggie talks about bringing home frozen food and other items near their expiration date that he got from the school cafeteria in order to distribute it amongst the kids in his neighborhood: "Gotta make sure my grandma eats well over the holidays."

He also says that "the holidays and New Year's are major hustle opportunities," so it is possible that he works part-time jobs when off from school, also saying that he can work as a ski instructor in the winter.

Jack declares that he will be doing his homework, unlike Leona, and afterwards he says that he spent most of the winter break skiing.

Jack also says, "I spent my last holiday at home pulling a sleigh in wolf form" and "I got a part-time job at a restaurant in Craneport during our last vacation," but as these lines were during events I'm not sure if he means winter holidays or different holidays, and they might not count.

Floyd says he gets tired of spending every new year with "the same old suspects," and he seems to mean Jade and Azul: the twins explain that ice floes compromise their ability to visit home in the winter, so they spend winter break at Octavinelle.

Jamil says that his family has plans to travel during the holiday, and while we do not know what exactly Epel did over the winter break, we learn from Vil that it involved skipping rehearsals for the VDC.

I'm not sure we get too much information about what Diasomnia did during the winter, but Lilia appears at Ramshackle mid-winter-break before the rest of the students have returned, talking about how Malleus is annoyed at not being invited to any parties.

As travel seems complicated for Malleus, and Silver and Lilia are father and son, it is not impossible that they remained on campus like the mermaids, possibly with Sebek (but I don't think this has actually been confirmed anywhere).

Crowley says that he intends to spend winter break "expanding (his) investigation area to a tropical land (he's) never visited before" as he diligently continues searching for a way to send the prefect home: "Escaping winter's frigid bite to kick back in a hammock and sip coconut juice while gazing at the transquil ocean waves...I have NO such refined and indulgent vacation plans whatsoever, I assure you."

The new year's events are conspicuously occurring during New Year's itself (the very middle of winter break), and the game seems to be asking for some suspension of disbelief concerning the timing.

They are very careful about not having any of the characters mention attending class or going home for winter vacation as they all announced at the beginning of Book 4 that they were going home and at the end of Book 4 they return, saying "Happy New Year," as though it is their first time seeing the prefect since before New Year's eve.

(Interestingly the prefect and Grim--who have no where else to be but the school during winter break--do not appear during the New Year's events.)

If you are wondering what the characters were up to during the winter break for maybe fanfic purposes, I think this is what we can say for sure:

1) Chenya was unsuccessfully inviting Riddle out 2) Ace was playing video games 3) Jack was skiing 4) Azul, Jade and Floyd were at Octavinelle 5) Epel was not rehearsing 6) Crowley wants people to believe that he was looking into a way to send the prefect home :>

(Or he said he was planning to investigate while letting people think he was trying to cover for a tropical vacation, but the tropical vacation story itself was actually a cover for something else?! But that gets into theory territory 👀)

I love my setup so far

Transquill for hard hitting fast physical attacks

Pichu to paralyze enemies

Servine for water types because those things get some tough moves early on and pichu doesn't solve everything

Raticate and Sentret are basically here to tank hits while I stall time but they're evolved to they can dish it out too

Eventually Spinerak is gonna evolve and that'll mean there's Hell to pay cus Ariados is fast with a wide type coverage in its move pool

I was tagged by @dauen for the mid-year book freakout tag, and I was genuinely so excited because I had been meaning to do it, but then I wondered if anybody even cared. So yes, thank you so much! <3 And let's gooo ~

1. Best book you’ve read so far this year

Birnam Wood. Hands down. Everybody go read Birnam Wood.

2. Best sequel you’ve read so far this year

This question made me realise I don't read a lot of sequels. The ONLY one I've read so far this year is Hell Bent (the sequel to "Ninth House"). And it was kind of fun. But I didn't love it.

3. New release you haven’t read yet

Hm... I suppose I don't keep up with new releases like I used to. Though Carrie Soto Is Back comes to mind, if that counts as a new release. And Sea of Tranquility from last year. (I accidentally just mispelled that as "Transquility" lol)

4. Most anticipated release for the second half of the year

Okay, so this is super niche and a bit weird, but it might be The Otherworld by Abbie Emmons. I've never actually read anything by her and I'm not sure if it'll be good, but I know her from YouTube and I'm curious. Has anybody else on here read any of her books?

5. Biggest disappointment

Probably The Midnight Library. I had seen so many people raving about this book online, but I HATED it. Genuinely the most amateurish writing I have come across in years. And so, so preachy. Not trying to be mean here. But yeah, it wasn't for me.

Oh, and Kill All Your Darlings by David Bell was also bad, sadly.

6. Biggest surprise

Hm. Birnam Wood was the biggest surprise regarding how much I loved it. And also regarding the ending. And Rock Paper Scissors by Alice Feeney had one of the coolest plot twists I came across this year.

7. Favourite new author (debut or new to you)

100% ELEANOR CATTON WHO WROTE BIRNAM WOOD IT WAS SO GOOD OMG!

Also Victoria Gosling? I am currently reading Before The Ruins by her and it's quite good as well. Beautiful writing. Kind of entrancing. I feel like fans of The Secret History would be into it?

8. Newest fictional crush/newest favourite character

Hmm, I don't really get fictional crushes. But if I did, I would have to say Mira or Tony from, you guessed it, Birnam Wood. (Oh, and maybe David from Before the Ruins. Also quite cute.)

10. Book that made you happy

Ummm... All of this is forcing me to face the fact that my reading year so far has NOT been that good. I reread If We Were Villains and that made me happy. For non-fiction I read Undrowned and that made me happy at times. But other passages were really sad and emotional.

ok we can make an offshoot of an offshoot of an AU to make the Mutant Symbiote Team work.

for whatever reason wade and logan who are dating meet eddie brock who has venom, and they all fall in love. for whatever reason they need to go back to the ruins of the life foundation, and they find there the five seeds of venom that were forcefully extracted but never had a chance to hatch, because they didnt understand what they were doing and also the program got Pretty Forcefully Shut Down, By Venom And Eddie

while this is happening, venom is also ready to spawn, and so retakes the seeds, and goes back to new york

there venom spawns Six Whole Children, all the children he could possibly have. normally venom would space them out, but he's concerned about the seeds that they recovered and know they'll be weak and need to be spawned ASAP. this creates Agony, Lasher, Scream, Phage, [an OC because in the comics this was Riot, and in the movies Riot was the leader and is dead], and Sleeper

Sleeper is the strongest because it was the most natural "birth", who came at the right time and wasnt separated from venom for years. they raise him right but it makes him a bit of a smug sort of person. COLORS: Black and Yellow. POWERS: Camouflage(can render bonded invisable to the naked eye), Enhanced Vision(can see cloaked things), and Chemokinesis(can produce liquid and aerosol chemicals, which can transquilize, emotionally manipulate, or be corrosive, probably among other effects. This also allows it to generate pheromones, which it can use to either increase stealth by masking their scent, induce emotions in others, or hide their emotional state)

Then there are the quintuplets, born weaker and needing more help, but eventually gaining strength. None of them get extensive characterization in the comics afaik, but I'm expanding off the little entries I find to give them what I think they'd have, though I'm willing to hear other interpretations of them. They also all have the ability to bond with each other to form a larger symbiote called "Hybrid".

Agony has a real sense of right and wrong and a desire to do good, though warped by her being a symbiote. She wants to be a hero, and she wants help on that path with a good person to bond with. COLOR: Purple. POWERS: She has "hair" which she can manipulate like tendrils. MODIFICATION: I'd like to change it so her "hair" is actually just long tendrils themselves, and maybe make them barbed as well to increase both their grip strength and the "agony" of being grabbed by one.

Lasher is one I picture quieter, but more likely to snap at you if you irritate them. Not unkind, just quiet with a short fuse. COLOR: Green. POWERS: Has four tendrils on its back that end in wicked blades. MODIFICATION: I would make it so the blades could end in anything Lasher likes, smooth nubs to walk around on like Doc Ock, or spikes like a terrifying morningstar. Especially useful for someone who doesn't always go around killing, to be able to retract the most deadly part of their body.

Scream is angry. Quick to snap, but still has a deeply held desire to do good. This puts her a bit at war with herself and her instincts, and she also falls quickly into righteous fury that then cevolves into useless blind rage. A problem to be sure, but anger can be harnessed if you're willing to learn. COLOR: Yellow/orange. POWERS: Hair, just like Agony :/ MODIFICATIONS: I would give her a low hertz high decibel scream power like her name implies, sort of like a death metal gutteral roar. Maybe she doesn't even have hair tendrils, or if she does they're shorter+weaker than Agony's.

Phage seems to me to have like, the least amount of evidence on his page for a personality, but I'm going to say he's stubborn. A little more likely to knock heads and not see a problem with it. Not bad, just a bit headstrong. COLOR: Orange/red. POWERS: none :( sorry Phage MODIFICATIONS: To go with the name "Phage", I would give him an Miasma Of Illness! Perhaps it's an aerosolized toxin? Not enough to kill anything, but it replicates the symptoms of illness, starting easy with a few sneezes and coughs, and quickly leading to blurry vision, pounding headache, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, trouble thinking, extreme exhaustion. He's like fighting the plague. The big drawback is that until he's MUCH older and in more control of his power, he can't help but coat the whole battlefield in this aerosolized toxin when he uses it, affecting teammates as well!

FIFTH ONE: This guy was Riot in the comics, but we're not doing Riot, so it's time to invent a guy! OC TIME! I propose the names "Brawl" and "Bruise", I am overly fond of Bruise admittedly. I would make this a thinker symbiote, a planner, who seeks the thrill of the fight but also appreciates a good book. Its personality would be, to the outsider, at odds with it's name, but just like a Bruise its thoughts linger, yearning to be pressed at and thought out completely. COLOR: I would make them a dark blue, like the color of a fresh bruise, there's too much orange on the team otherwise. POWERS: This one I'm a little stumped on, I kind of like the idea of huge fuckoff spikes on its knuckles, as if wearing brass knuckles. Bigger than its other siblings but still smaller than Sleeper, Bruise is sort've like the planner who sits in the back, but when it's time to come out he hits HARD. MODIFICATIONS: Obviously I don't have any, but I leave suggestions open to others who wanna help me workshop Bruise/Brawl.

NOW. ONTO THE KIDS.

I'm thinking Laura Kinney, Jubilee, Negasonic, Yukio, Russell, and Kitty Pryde. All kids that are mutants with a close connection to either Logan or Wade.

I'm willing to debate on who goes to what kid in which order, but I'm thinking something like this:

Sleeper: Kitty, Jubilee, or Laura

Agony: Jubilee or Yukio

Lasher: Russell, Laura, Jubilee, or Yukio

Scream: Negasonic or Kitty

Phage: Laura, Kitty, or Russell(maybe two headstrong people aren't the best combo though)

Brawl/Bruise: Laura, Negasonic, Kitty, or Russell

I can go into what powers they'd have combined once I decide who has which symbiote lol

As for how they get bonded, I think what happens is first one of them(Sleeper probably) choses a mutant to bond with simply because it's bigger and stronger and ready for it sooner and wants to. Mutant youngin's see that there's no harm in it, but it greatly deeply worries the X-Men who are Not Into It, especially because a young symbiote's emotions(especially rage) are very volatile, even having been taught by Venom to be good.

But then, there's an emergency at the x-mansion, and Logan, Wade, and Eddie all rush over while in possession of the baby symbiotes(I imagine in the form of Hybrid, perhaps bonded to Logan) to help. There's been an attack of some kind, and a lot of mutant kids are hurt. After they fight off the attackers, in a bid to be good and help, Hybrid unbonds from Logan and splits up, bonding with injured children and healing them. These then become their permanent(or at least, permanent for now) hosts, and form a symbiote unit within the X-Men(who, again, Do Not Like That This Is Happening and have a Conversation[read: knock-down drag-out fight] with Logan and Wade about what's being done to the children under their protection)

Agony and Yukio would also slay. Especially cute if Sleeper also bonds with NTW
