THE LAST GREAT ADVENTURE
THE LAST GREAT ADVENTURE, a trip to #Manila. #OhmNanon #FanMeeting
Last year at this time I was preparing for a long trip to Manila, but was it the last great adventure? The following appeared last January on SERENDIPITY. Far, Far Away, by Rich Paschall The most important point, to begin with, is that I never had any desire to cross the Pacific. I have made the trip across the Atlantic to Europe many times. The flight time from Chicago O’Hare to a western…

My sibling's started watching Tumblr's favourite Medical Drama, House, so I've been experiencing it By Proxy and I'm enjoying it but I hate Chase so whenever I hear him speak I either complain or my brain autocorrects his Transpacific accent into an Actual Aussie accent.
#I'm using Transpacific in the same way of the old Transatlantic accent#fuckin hate hearing Chase speak#use a proper aussie accent weirdo#Listener's Commands

an excerpt:
A contact zone like the Los Angeles metro area played a key role in the creation of what we call the “DNA of K-pop” because many K-pop artists hailed from that area. To many 1990s Korean youth, LA was both a place of fantasy and threat, reflecting Hollywood-produced popular culture. H.O.T was a K-pop boy band in the 90s, and one of its members, Tony Ahn, hailed from L.A. Because of his fluency in English, Korean youth were fascinated with Ahn and his hip image. In addition, Lena Park, Tiffany Young (from the group Girls Generation), and Tiger JK are some other examples of K-pop pioneers from LA. Furthermore, as Young Dae Kim points out, many K-pop performers were not Korean Americans; rather, many would be better described as gyopo, a Korean term that “…broadly embraces people with Korean descent who lives (sic) abroad, with or without a foreign nationality of which they chose to live.” 6 This term perfectly describes those Koreans who study abroad in the US or have lived there for a period. One prominent example is Lee Soo Man, the founder of SM Entertainment, one of Korea’s major entertainment companies. He studied as a graduate student in Southern California in the 1980s and came up with the idea of SM Entertainment through watching MTV in America. SM Entertainment also played a key role in the growth of K-pop, revealing yet another connection to Los Angeles.

do you think it’s common knowledge that people who live in big cities have smaller carbon footprints?
#like urbanization is good for one thing#mine is TINY except for every couple years when I’m forced to take a transpacific flight#actually the biggest contributor to my carbon footprint is my dog which is WILD that’s a factor#like he’d be creating as much carbon living by himself on the mountains if I hadn’t taken him in lol#but anyway yeah it’s all bullshit anyway until big corpo takes responsibility#I ought to stop trying so much#text

5, 7, 10, 18, and 25 for the most recent ask game
005. favorite form of potato? answered
007. what animal do you look forward to seeing when you visit an aquarium? if it's an aquarium that has a petting pool then i get excited for the sharks. if not, then i like seeing jellyfish or octopi bc they're just fascinating to watch move.
010. on a plane, do you ask for apple or orange juice? if i ask for any juice on a place, then it is tomato juice.
018. your boba/tea order? oh, i go for a classic black milk tea boba or a brown sugar. but tbh i don't really order boba enough to have a "standard" order.
025. would you say you have good taste in music? i have MY taste in music, which i think is good FOR ME.
weirdly specific and unrelated asks to know someone well
#ask#alienmythologist#i have been listening to a TON of pop punk classics this fall#also i've discovered that my over the ear headphones are FANTASTIC#during this most recent trip that was ~36 hours#i had my headphones on almost the entire time (literally from the point i got through security in chengdu to when i got home in VA)#except for 4 hours when i slept on the transpacific flight#so like. 32 hours#and my headphones did not need to be recharged once#they still had some juice left by the time i got home

One of my favorite little facts about history is that the Mexican peso was functionally the everyday unit of currency in China in the 19th and early 20th century. Silver was one of the few western commodities that Chinese merchants were willing to trade in at rates that made shipping it to China (an expensive, arduous process) profitable; this trade became so voluminous by the 19th century that large everyday transactions even far away from port cities were conducted in pesos, in large part because Mexico's large domestic silver supply and existing transpacific trade links meant that the currency was stable (a known quantity to merchants in a time and place where relatively pure silver coins were otherwise uncommon) and readily available for use in trade

Hello! Not sure if you’ve answered something similar already, but out of curiosity, how do you know so much about Japanese law?? I’m an American university student planning to attend law school, is this something you learned while there or something you picked up on your own?
I love your posts, I think your takes on the legal landscape of Death Note are so interesting!!!
Everything I know about Japanese law is self-taught; everything I've shared about Japanese criminal law in my Death Note posts, I researched and learned for the purpose of drafting the posts.
(I'm just monotropic and engage in research as a hobby and compulsion.)
#ive always engaged in research as a hobby#and i especially like really thorny and layered research#so tech law and transpacific law are my catnip#i dont generally care for criminal law#but the asks were very fun and touched on another area i enjoy immensely#which is geopolitical nonsense#anyway im glad you found my takes interesting!#i took china business law while in law school#and my firm specializes in us china law#but my interest in japanese law is thin#namely fandom related#and licensing related

This isn't legal advice, but as general information to combat legal alarmism, it's highly unlikely you could be, or would be, sued by the authors' estates for using the authors' names in tagged fan content of characters inspired by irl!authors and their works. It's a matter of community moderation and common courtesy to use fandom specific tags, but anon is either wildly misunderstanding the legal actions they've come across or repeating misunderstandings spread by word of mouth. In either case, anon didn't include any cognizable right of action, the authors' estates, or any other information relevant to either confirming or complying with anon's assertions re: legal liability.
Additionally, well before a lawsuit is filed, the rights holder is likely to first send a cease and desist letter or notice of some kind; especially with regard to individual infringers and fan works, which are generally tolerated and less likely to cause damages or result in infringement worth the cost of litigation. (Service of process can also be thorny where there are foreign defendants; it's usually easier and more effective to communicate with good faith infringers prior to initiating legal action.)
tl;dr: Misinformation regarding fandom and the law is common; take unsubstantiated statements about legal liability with a grain of salt — especially statements that don't mention any specific legal claim/basis for liability.
Hello, lovely Bunal Dzi art. I would like to point out that in recent years there's been increasing amount of close cases of people getting into legal trouble for their quite harmless things about bungous, whether it's BSD, Bunal, Isekai Shikkaku etc. So that's why especially in Japanese fandoms it's been a huge deal to avoid mentioning the characters' full names, and instead use abbreviations or nicknames to separate the characters from the irl authors. This is also used in the international fandom by people, why are aware of the possible problems. So tagging content would be more like the series name, and for character "Bunal dzi" or "Bunal Dazai", but never ever include the tag "Dazai Osamu", as that will make you discoverable by normal people, who some are ones that totally shouldn't see anime twinks (unless if you are ready to get legally sued by some authors' relatives, as it has happened few times). This is very old practise, but many in BSD fandom don't seem to know it or be aware how even their fandom has caused trouble to scholars and other regular people. This is just a kind heads up, nothing else. But I hope you will consider this and spread the word, as even currently there is one Japanese 20 years old girl about to face legal case by close relatives of certain guy who is a character in Bunal and few other bungou series (not in BSD, though).
Few posts that explain the tagging stuff, and overall fandom behavior that should be followed: https://www.tumblr.com/peachy-jeans/614451965120937984/didnt-think-id-have-to-make-this-post-here-but

Have a good day!
Jesus christ 😭 I never imagined something like that, thanks for sharing :D
#bsd#bungou stray dogs#source: im a transpacific lawyer (but not your lawyer)#normally i wouldnt say anything#fandom is not a good source of legal information generally#but this was particularly egregious#and way overkill for the actual point which is just: use tags with courtesy and consider researchers#and consider the source and quality of the information being conveyed when evaluating rumors and word of mouth#“it's happened a few times” is not meaningful if you dont know what “it” is or the claims involved
