Vladivostok to Moscow. Picture from a hard day’s ride in Siberia. Traveling along the Trans-Siberian Road between these VERY distant cities 12 years ago, I was able to meet and talk with the average person on a daily basis. Nothing but kind and helpful people. When the discussion turned to politics, the people in Siberia were very displeased with Putin and his illegal ascension to the position of present-day dictator (their words). It appears, from what I am reading, is that tide changed and people are happier with him now. I wonder if that is true? It’s hard to comprehend being from outside Russia and the current war against Ukraine. One thing I can comment on, with authority, was the poverty of the average person and how little they had and how they struggled. Day 2: We have Landing!!

Day 2: We have Landing!!

We have landed in Vladivostok after twenty long hours of flight. Still, we are so happy to get started. My writing and pictures of the day are below. As you can imagine my middle name is exhausted so I’m laying down. Enjoy! My room. My writing. Her letter.

Day 2 The first thought when I got up was: „Alexey is kidding! For sure I will have a shower.“ But he wasn't. AAAAH!

Our next stop was at Perm. The station is really ugly. Nothing left to say.

Alexey and me went back to the dining car for some breakfast. Actually something was given to us from our conductor but it looked and smelled disgusting. So I had some pancakes with salmon and tea. After snoozing at the cabin til the next city: Yekaterinburg. A very nice station where you can find old paintings and chandeliers on the ceiling. We were walking aroung, always watching the time. Back on the train I started to write my blog. Tanjas husband wanted to know what I do and if I have pictures from Germany. So I started a little diashow with pictures from Hamburg, Cologne, Berlin, Sylt and Kulmbach. Alexey was translating and I had the feeling that the atmosphere in the cabin was getting better. We spend the whole day sitting together, watching pictures, videos and chatting about everything and nothing. Then the stop at Tyumen was close and I wasn't sure what will happen if Alexey is gone. He was my translator, guide and friend in one person on this train. He told me his friends will pick him up at the station and I was curious about meeting them. When we arrived at Tyumen it was already 10pm and you could see the guys were really missing eachother. In this moment I thought about my friends and what it would be like when I come back someday. The boys haven't seen eachother for about 2 month, but I'll be gone for more than a year. Or even longer. They came over to say „Hi“ and one guy took off his jacket and showed me that he was wearing a sweater from the German National Soccer Team – that made my day! :) After a short but lovely farewell I got back on the train again. I reflected the last two days and remembered that Alexey was laughing at me when I told him I'll stay 6 days on the train. He asked what my intention was but acutally I had no answer. Now I have one: Dear Alexey, I got on the Transsiberian Railway for one reason: to meet people like you! Thanks for making the start of my trip this amazing.

For my surprise Tanja and her husband invited me to have dinner with them. They had some mashed potatoes, fish, bread, sausage and some chili dip. I tried the sausage with the hot stuff and it tasted amazing. We had some conversation through google translate but it was really exhausting. I went to the bathroom, tried to wash my fringe and went up to my bed. I started reading „Journey Man“ from Fabian Sixtus Körner, a book that was a farewell present from Jule, Hannes and Ruth. I opened it and found the card they wrote, on it the following quote:

„If you take your own path, no one can pass you!

I was close to tears. And even closer when I started reading. The little emotional chaos caused by the situation and imagination this day made it difficult to fall asleep but in the end the relaxed shaking of the train got me.

I had the best help anyone could ask for with a friendly motorcycle group who watched my every move - through unofficial channels of communication, put me up in their homes, and shared their passion of motorcycling. Well I finally made it from Beijing to Moscow via Ulaanbataar on the Trans-Siberian railway. Trans-Siberian Railway: My blast from the past of 12 years ago when traveling across Russia seemed pretty easy. I can say that met the nicest people along the way who were all very helpful and kind. Why is it the the politicians do not represent the wishes of the common citizen — but we have seen this theme for thousands of years with the rise and fall of empires.
