Behind the Scenes (your favourite television man suffers from dysphoria)

Vox woke up to the uncomfortable, warm, wet sensation between his legs. Oh fuck. It was that time of the month. He groaned, digging his claws into the blanket. Why have menstruation in Hell if you can't even fucking reproduce? Well, he supposed this was Hell. It makes for more suffering, doesn't it? Fuck, he even tried to replace his lower parts since Vox was quite easily upgradable. Unfortunately, he'd wake up the next morning just to find it would revert back to what it was no matter how often he tried. Though, for some reason, that issue wasn't present when he got top surgery. Hell's rules sure are strange, but hey, at least Vox didn't have to suffer his past difficulty breathing from having to hide his chest all the time. Binding his chest with bandages did not do well for him at all. It’s been years and he still has breathing difficulties and back pain because of it.

The TV Overlord let out a sigh and sat up. There was a pool of blood where he sat on the bed. Gross. He'd have to change the sheets later. For now, he needed to change. Vox slid off the bed, nearly stumbling when he stood up. He walked to the drawer and . . . Fuck. He was out of pads. Another disgruntled sigh escaped his mouth. It was 4:19 on a weekend, so Velvette would be asleep, if Vox was lucky maybe she was staying up late doom-scrolling. He sent a text and waited, about a minute or two. Velvette hadn't replied yet so Vox figured he'd walk over to her room himself and grab some pads.

When he got to Velvette’s room, she indeed was scrolling on social media. Vox cleared his throat loudly, standing behind the other demon from the other side of the bed. “I sent you a text,” he said flatly.

Velvette didn't even bother to even look at Vox when she replied, “I put you on mute. You're always blowing up my phone about that Alastor weirdo.”

Vox rolled his eyes. He was about to sit on the edge of the bed, but then he realised that was a horrible fucking idea because his pants were drenched in blood, so he remained standing.

“Whatever,” the TV-headed demon grumbled. “I just need some pads. And unmute me. What if I have to tell you something important?”

Velvette scoffed. “If by ‘important–” She made air quotes with her fingers. “–you mean rambling about sharks or the Radio Demon. Fuck’s sake, it's like those are the only two aspects to you sometimes. Pads are in the drawer over there.”

The doll demon pointed to the other side of the bed which Vox stood at still not looking away from her phone. Velvette was annoying, but at least she was casual about the fact Vox was a man who had menstruation. Valentino could sometimes be a little . . . inappropriate, to say the least, with the fact Vox had a pussy whilst being a man. Vox sighed and grabbed a box of pads before retreating to his room.

He set the box on top of a drawer, which he had decorated with a few figurines of various sharks. He also kept his toiletries on that desk because he didn't like keeping them in the bathroom. It felt icky to him, keeping all the soap, toothpaste, shampoo, toothbrush, and everything else near the toilet. Vox grabbed a pad, a change of clothes and put them in the bathroom sink. He sat on the toilet, sighed, took off his pants and put on some new underwear to place his pad on. The TV demon paused for a moment as he looked down. Why couldn't he just have a dick like every other man? Sure, his lower parts looked a lot different from a typical cis woman’s now due to testosterone, but it still wasn't what any other normal guy would have, and he'd never be the same as other men because of it. He'd always have to put on an act to be as masculine as possible to overcompensate. Sure, he easily passed as a man, but still . . . It wasn't the same. He wasn't the same.

Vox pulled his underwear up and put on some pants. He took off his vest and shirt too so he could change into newer and cleaner ones. Vox often wore the same outfit. Velvette and Valentino didn't understand it but he excused it with “needing to be iconic for the public.” Despite being in an industry where change and innovation is a big thing, Vox liked predictability – needed predictability in his life. At least to some extent, in certain aspects like clothing, music, and a vague routine. It always gave him a sense of comfort and control.

The tech-headed demon let out another sigh and dumped his old clothes in the laundry basket. He quickly changed the sheets on his bed and threw himself onto it. Vox really, really wanted to tear at his chest with his claws or a cutter, knife, anything sharp, really, but ultimately, he resisted. He didn't want Valentino to comment on it the next time the two had sex or whatever, as tempting as it was to hurt himself.

Instead, Vox rolled over to the side of the bed and opened the drawer in the nightstand. He kept a few of his comfort items in there, like a shark-shaped fidget toy and other things he could fidget with. Vox preferred the harder, clickier fidget toys, but he did have one of those little necklaces you could chew on too, though he didn't use it often. He couldn't use most stress balls as his claws would usually tear them by accident. That was fine with him, though. The sound and feeling of clicking on something satisfied his mind (technically, he didn’t have an actual ‘brain’, considering the fact he had a television for a head) better. He'd always keep that drawer locked because he feared the other Vees would see it as childish that Vox seeked comfort in such items. They already saw his little shark obsession and the fact his whole room was covered almost almost completely in shark-themed items to be something rather foolish. Vox scooped up a few of his favourite fidget items from the drawer, as well as his shark plushies he kept on top of the nightstand, and put them alongside him on the bed to fidget with. That always helped him relax and get his mind off things.

Vox had nearly fallen asleep now. Nearly. Buuuut, then he heard the door open without warning, and he immediately sat up in a panic. “Who is it?” he called out, but he could already take a guess at who it was. Footsteps approached, and, of course, there stood the TV-headed Overlord’s business partner, Valentino. Vox quickly threw the blanket over his comfort items, but Valentino had most definitely already taken notice.

Cis man Vox is great, trans man Vox is great, trans woman Vox is great... But hear me out: bigender Vox.

As a human, Vee sees herself as an ambitious cis woman in a rich men's world and weaponizes femininity to her advantage while cursing the glass ceiling. She loves being a woman as much as she hates it and often wishes she was born male, fantasizes about how her life would be if she was a man, stares at men's clothes with longing... (🥚)

As a demon, he is reborn in a body that makes it easy to pass as a man: he can use a binder and change a few settings to make his voice deeper. He tells himself that "playing pretend" is simply the logical thing to do to protect himself and ascend to power (nevermind that there are several female Overlords. Yep, he's in denial)

Over the years, he slowly comes to terms with the fact that he enjoys being perceived as masculine in a way that has nothing to do with social status. Vox the businessman isn't just a persona, it's an actually identity that brings him joy and makes him feel good about himself.

He finally figured it out! He was a trans man all along! He decides to fully transition, and it feels great, for a while. Gender euphoria, baby.

And yet... As much as he loves being a man, some days, he misses being called a lady and wearing dresses. Isn't that just ironic? Suddenly, the longing is back. He feels just like he used to when he was human, only this time the genders are reversed.

He starts second-guessing himself, frustrated and anxious, and his internalized misogyny and old-timey perception of gender roles are NOT helping him process the situation at all. He starts overperforming masculinity to try and compensate for his doubts. Was he just faking masculinity so well that he fell for his own lie?? That can't be true. He loves being a man. He just... she, she just wishes she could sometimes be perceived as a woman, too. (and no, he can't settle for something in the middle or outside of the binary: it has to be one extreme or the other, like a binary signal of 0 or 1)

Thankfully for Vee, she's got an incredible adaptable biomechanical body. Once she finally figures out that she can be a woman one day and a man the next (because she can do whatever she wants, forever), and that her fem gender expression doesn't invalidate his masculinity in any way, she gets SO MANY upgrades <3

tl;dr: "cis" woman with strong gender envy and internalized misogyny -> "cis" demon "pretending" to be a man -> gender crisis -> transgender man?? -> wait a second -> gender crisis #2 -> bigender Vox <3

Also I think it's a fun parallel with Alastor, who is agender in my heart

It also works pretty well, thematically speaking: Vox as a symbol of change, constantly switching performances (+ binary signal jokes)
