#transformation theme is one of my favs ever i think

Have you played PuyoPuyo 7? If so, what do you think about it?
good timing anon, i actually replayed it pretty recently with a friend of mine (wanted to play the recent re-translation, very much recommend it, its much better than Nexus's halfhearted mess) so my opinions on it are fresh!!
the short answer is. Its so jank. and probably objectively not a very good game, and there are definitely things i would change about it if i could. But i still really like it for what it is. It's got a unique identity in the series and I love that about it!
im gonna talk a lot now so under the readmore this goes ^_^
i love that transformation mode is just if fever rules were an insane mess. why does it go up to 99 seconds. why does mega mode send SO much damage. god bless it<3 they should bring it back. wanna see what hellfire comet festivals shibakazu would cook up in it.
and like the story is.... not. well paced. but ive learned to laugh about it at least. and like suuuuuure ecolo shows up at the end and then hypes up how unstoppably powerful they are and how ringo could NEVER BEAT THEM and then gets defeated in 10 seconds because the final boss is a joke. its fine<3 at least its actually fun to play and doesnt take a million years to trudge through so the bad pacing doesnt feel nearly as awful. (puyo chronicle i am giving you a little glare)
ive grown to love the jank art style but i will say, i wish they redrew everyone. ringo standing next to characters clearly just with sprites edited from 15th anniversary or fever 2 make her stick out quite a bit. it makes me wonder if the game's art was really rushed or something? it just feels a bit off.
another thing, i dont think this game is a Bad introduction to ecolo at all (i Love their design in this game and i think it perfectly introduces how intensely powerful and unhinged they can be), BUT!!! their chain animations are really... disappointing. idk. i Like that they shapeshift into other characters i think thats fun (i actually think its kind of a shame its a trait of theirs rarely brought up anymore) but the fact its mostly just the others' animations recolored black with some extra particle effects is really lame. minor differences like a more ecolo-like facial expression (get silly!! get mischievous!!!) couldve gone a long way to giving them more personality in their chains.
also relating to the past two notes, its really no secret that transformation mode is... Missing. Quite a bit of assets it really should have. considering a decent handful of characters only go through very minor changes (darkle is literally just a clothing color swap) and honestly Ecolo (since all of their chains are borrowed) still only changing to feli for mini and klug for mega is SUCKS i think and it makes me the most upset out of the cast.. ecolo's already transforming when they're not in fever!!!!! lets do something else!!!!!
this is just a reaaally quick mockup scribble of an idea i had that id been discussing with my friend, but i think it'd be really fun if instead of doing a simple character shapeshift, they got real small and silly looking for their mini form and HUGE AND OVERBEARING AND INTIMIDATING for mega. the core would stay the same size, for scale! pp7 is the game that leans the hardest into ecolo being someone who can switch from silly little thang to terrifying cosmic being of sheer force on a dime, and i think itd be fun if their transformations reflected that.
like idk ecolo is the Debut final boss and (imo) one of the coolest characters in the series so i think it sucks that they got the short end of the stick in the battle animations area in this game.
like ive been saying I've grown to love many of Puyo 7's problems but this is one thing i would definitely change if i could.
#i love puyopuyo can you tell by the way i talk about things id change when i talk about it half the time#bri talks#also tasty tunes i did not mention that in the ramble its good music thank you hideki abe as always#transformation theme is one of my favs ever i think#i haventtttt gotten a chance to get my hands on the pp7 ost cd yet BUT SOMEDAY... SOMEDAY........

i know i said i wouldnt be ranting about totk anymore, but i realized i didnt really count the sage dungeons as story (dont ask me why) so i thought im gonna write a better summarized version of my opinion about totk (i have around 60% of the game, all lightroots, not yet all shrines (missing like .. 20 or so, know the reward), not all krogs (dont know the reward), not all mayoi (half know the reward?) )
(in no particular order)
good stuff (in my opinion)
the. MUSIC! god the music is good, it was good in botw too but now with much more different bosses it really is probably one of my fav soundtracks of all time (most fav are all three phases of the end fight, the pre-fight to that, the build up one before all of those, Frosgeira (wind tempel boss) the glorious mASTER KOGA and more tbh)
the build up and end boss fight(s) are fantastic, i dont think im ever not gonna have my heart racing when approaching it (despite now skipping almost the entire way bc i set a teleport thing right before it) just bc the build up is so well made and the music(again) is such a banger and the fight(s) itself is so fun too, tbh i keep wanting to play it just bc its so fun
i LOVE how many themes play into the music (endfight alone had so many layers, fav probably is ganondorfs classic theme and calamity ganons both in the same piece among much more, and daruks theme in the fire temple)
(edit) YOU. CAN. TOUCH. DA. DRAGONS!!!!
ganondorf
ganondorfs design (x3)
ganondorfs weapon designs
ganondorfs voice (japanese)
everyone elses voice (japanese)
all voices (german)
thE YIGA!!! i love everythign about them and am so happy they got to be more than just some mini mission
(edit) also the fact that they get zonau tech to work without any special ghost powers is so ????
(edit) koga can summon and use zonau tech unlimited?? hes so cool
NO stealth mission!! (as far as im aware)
bosses are very different from each other
main dungeons are not too short and not too long and mostly fun (mostly bc i personally didnt like the gerudo one), i love that you can still somewhat cheese them and do them your way
sages felt like they got a bit more involved
(edit) you gotta do more stuff before getting to the actual dungeons and i really like that, feels less like a fetch quest but that you are actually helping
(edit) each sage is actually there in the dungeon and is required for it, which is great!
each settlement saw a much bigger danger/change (tho that has more impact if you have played botw) and its problems felt much more real
shrines are well varied tho i think overall a little easy (only got stuck on two so far and later solved them easily bc when i first started them i was tired and exhausted, no brain left lol)
NPCs felt less flat + more bigger sidequests that felt like they had more impact
cool new monsters + designs
the underground was pretty appropiately creepy
the sages abilities are neat
you can refight bosses!!
stable points system is a neat way to encourage you using them
weapon fusing is neat
(edit) the forest of the krogs being corrupted like that is both creepy and a neat nod to oot
(edit) the vai gerudo outfit being gone!! (one) evil has been defeated
(edit) the health bar going so far off the middle in ganondorfs second phase is honestly just funny hnjdfdjk unfortunate that you only need the master sword and with a few perfect dodges his health melts like butter in the summer
(edit) the music when dragondorf transforms sounds so sad .. its probably meant as a oh no world is actually ending sad but i like to think of it as a oh god what did he do to himself sad
the scene where rauru seals ganondorf kinda fruity
(graphic, animations and the overall world is still fantastic)
bad stuff (in my opinion)
everything zonau they feel forced into every bit of the world and its history (i know them being somewhat alien is intentional but not like that) it feels crammed into places they werent before and shouldnt be and it makes it all feel very artificial
the glyphs/dragon tears/memories really ruined alot for me, while it gave you insight as to what happened, it felt like it showed you too much and too little at the same time and i think it would have worked better if it was all in text for once if even at all, so the past stil stayed a mystery and youd be left wondering
timetravel .. really wasnt necessary and felt more like an excuse to get rid of zelda + make her the poor little sacrificial girl again + and to make her turning into a dragon as tragic as possible, like nothing but a stepping stone to the big reveal tm
shiekah tech being not just fully irrelevant but practically erased, wiped off the world (i know about the literally last guardian parts in hateno, it feels more like an oversight tbh, purah technically using it ... tho i dont think she ever calls it that, the purah pad is jsut the sheikah stone but worse), there being no good explanation, no remains, nothing as to why it would suddendly stop working and why even the titans and ESPEICALLY the shrine of life would be destroyed, if anything why wouldnt you enshrine it as a memento to history it was such a focus in botw and so well integrated into the world that it being fully gone, not even old overgrown, or visibly reused to build homes etc., or remains of how they built the og shrines in the underground feels like a HUGE missed opportunity (seriously it would have been so easy to make the ancient shiekah base their tech on old zonau tech, without stealign the gocus but buildign a connection)
all of the continuity problems, totk feels like botw didnt happen and the excuse of 'they didnt want to confuse new players' doesnt make a lick of sense in my eyes bc; its supposed to be a sequel, if you want it to be a standalone game then dont call it a sequel- if you start to play a game with the sequel instead of the first part its your own damn fault if you get confused; if anything, it would have been a good opportuntiy to make people interested in botw so theyd buy and play that one too
ganondorfs character is very flat, you basically get to know nothing about him (yuno even calls that out midgame but its never elaborated upon nhgfrdfhkk)
the zonau and their kingdom of hyrule is presented as this so perfectly good thing to such a degree it turns creepy, the end cutscene with mineru going poof was kinda uncomfy to watch tbh
the reward for all shrines being essentially a reveal as to who the hero in the tapestry was and it being, of course, some weird half zonau is the lamest answer to a mystery i didnt want an anwser too, it doesnt feel like it came naturally either (again my point of the zonau being forced into everything)
the shrines (zonau) feel so much more unnatural than the shiekah shrines, alien in a bad way and not in a good way + really are like a bad reskin of them, their sudden appearance and use is so much less logical
back in botw i was doubtful of if the shiekah tech wasnt going to far too modern tech and cause it all to feel like a bad mix of modern tech and medival fantasy, but they balanced it perfectly (tho the eponator zero was very much the limit imo) but the zonau tech .... oversteps that line i think, it really does feel, more than anything else, that it was just bc they wanted the stuff to be in there bc it might be fun to play around with, im not against that kind of stuff mind you im all for fun, but it feels a little like they thought of a box with endless stuff to play with first and a zelda game second (if you get what i mean)
quite a few quests or things in the game seem like they are more and then end in a dead end (the worst of all is impa saying she wants to go research what could help zelda turn back, and i was excited and convinced that shed give me a quest to find some mcguffin that would do that after i beat ganon but there wasnt anything you could actually do; less bad one but disappointing nonetheless the dongos were mentioned and treated like this big awesome thing from alot of NPCs all around the map and then when you find them they are bascially just gem vending maschines)
the way zelda turns back and link gets his arm back is incredibly unsatisfying, none of them even have something like a scar, or mark from it all, zelda spent thousands of years as a dragon (a transformation that was said to cost your soul but i guess that wasnt true) and link had his arm bascially eaten by miasma and he gets it back like it was never lost, zelda returns all intact as if nothing happened, getting blasted by some magic tm by two ghosts that were supposed to be long gone is the solution to all problems!!
(edit) link losing an arm wouldnt just be super intersting but also lend itself well to lead up into the next game where his prothesis is the focus and source of abilities
(edit) zelda got done so dirty, instead of her actual interests and character to shine she just gets shoved into yet another crisis surrounded by strangers in a world that looks like hers but isnt, and all she does is beg the ancient sages to swear to help link and sacrifice herself again (can you call that fridging? bc she sure feels like she got fridged) i like zelda and i dont like how much i didnt care about her and tbh im angry at the game for that
(edit) both link and zelda not even slightly changing in the years btween botw and totk kinda boring, like a haircut can only do so much
(edit) sonia really is the wife that dies to make husband sad thing isnt she? i get that gan had to get his hands on an enigma stone but i feel like there had been better ways to do that, the fact that she dies that easily is almost funny honestly, why does ganondorf even have weapons when he can just one punch people to death (tho i find it funny to imagine he can literally just kill people in one punch but hes too prideful to do it most of the time so he always uses weapons to look more cool)
(edit) so many new characters that you barely get to see or interact with, i really ... couldnt get myself to care much
(edit) zonau tech being so irrelevant to the games story while its also the focus is .. weird, its really just play doh for the players and nothing else honestly
(edit) monsters mining sonanium feels strange bc ... they dont do anything with it? the best thing i can think of is that they were told to do that so link cant .. upgrade his battery thignies? but then again you could just destroy the mines and remaining constructs to stop it .... also you really dont need anything zonau tech related to beat gan?
(edit) ganondorf beign so utterly uninterested in their tech is weird considering how he dealt with shiekah tech (and we KNOW it can get corrupted) he should be a tech nerd tbh
my twitch VoD of the first time beating the game getting muted at the credits despite me talking over it
nitpicks (in my opninion)
(edit) ganondorf should have a bit more of a boar inspired design, as treat, i think
(edit) the enigma stone wandering back to ganondorfs forehead even after transforming is? weird? i guess an excuse for da epic last stabby but still? (how cool would it have been to have to plunge into his mouth and break it there or something)
(edit) the underground gets a lil old after a while, the fact that its pretty much the same everywhere aside from some .. very strange flowing magma is a lil boring
(edit) ganondorf could have gone way more crazy with abilities and all that, imagine hed spwan multiple miasma arms on himself when you get him to a certain level of health
(edit) i miss unique weapons, there arent even normal axes around anymore, everything is about fusing really, i miss the cool shiekah tech weapons
(edit) the forest of the krogs being largely irrelevant is kinda weird
(edit) mineru being the sage of spirit still is kinda meh, the robot is neat but i thought tauro or purah would be the surprise sage tbh
(edit) the bosses were a little easy (i did boldo gohma rather early and did it without even getting hit)
you cant talk to koga normally :(
you cant find koga again after the last fight :(
you cant refight him (to my knowledge) :(
i find it very strange that yuno seemingly lost daruk shield, despite him having inhereted it in botw
the sage powers are not .. very great integrated, while its fun to haven them run around and help you fight, to actually use their powers you have to chase after them, something that in the heat of a battle is very annoying to do, constantly activating the wrong on or them losing their charge up when they get knocked over is like trying to herd a wild pack of geese while a three headed dragon is shotting laserbeams at you
some widlife just disappearing all of the sudden is very strange (like the rhino in hebra)
some new houses or settlements would have been cool, that the material things at the sides of roads are really only for you to play around with and not to build anything that lasts
you cant fight ganondorf (non dragon, even the dragon is locked to that evening sky) in the sunlight, night or rain, i would have loved to fight him at various times of day
their refusal to show any kind of blood is honestly turnign serious scenes into very awkward ones, sonia just getting punched and she dies with not even like, losing some spit from the force or something, or the fact when you defeat ganondorfs second phase he acts mortally wounded but doesnt even look scratched is just :/
amiibo stuff while neat being included its really mostly just bloating your inventory, if i wanted 5 vaguely different link outfits then i would have gotten the amiibo for it
why hide the -now-totally-not-phantom-ganon-armor- behind such a long questline and then .. have that NOT be upgradable
they put in a house building thingy and then not let you have a roof or a tree or something :(
at some point stable points jsut get you more and more of those free staying over night tickets that i maybe used .. once at the very start and now its just accumulating in my inventory
only one new horse coat pattern :(
satori now only being a thingy that shows you caves is kinda boring, i loved the mystery around it in botw (additionally, that it shows you caves you have completed already kinda sucks)
the end of the shrines isnt that cool anymore, speaking to a mummified monk that gives you essentially his last remains of life energy is so much cooler than a statue of the oh so awesome god king and his wife
the many references and reuse of old names is neat but together with timetravel etc. it easily leads to confusing and fighting among fans for who is more 'right' and its just .. tiring
(edit) considering how much of the advertising was about the sky islands i wished there were more and bigger ones, the underground (that was a little one sided after a while, it all looking the same rly) could have been alot smaller if the sky was bigger instead
(edit) i wished there was more of a sense of .. lost life in the ruins you find, from all races, the ancient ruins are jsut some bridged and ceremonial stuff and i wished there were more like .. houses, like people actually lived there and it not being all around beign a platform for you
(edit) the fact that the half zonau hero exists mean either rauru and sonia had kids but those were clearly not important enough to ever show nor mention, or there were other mixing of them before they all mysteriously died out the fact that the ancient hero was half zonau means their genes survided till then but somehow it never came up? the tapestry still exists and impa and purah say like its a well known fact that the hero looked like that (not at all close to any modern species) when you talk to them while wearing it (the fact that the hero armor thingy is very reminiscemt of ganondorf is like some backtreading bc we were theorizing about the hero having been ganondorf once and they wanted to stop that .. but the more funny thing is the HC of its a descdendet of rauru and ganondorf nhjdfknhdgkfnhkfd) (edit to add to the HC; the game being a big battle about child support is funnier than it should be idk if nintendo knew what they were doing adding details like that)
all in all it just feels like missed opportunities, lost potential, and more a game build around some game mechanics they really wanted to get into than telling a neat story, espeically so bc they called it a sequel, most of my complaints wouldnt be there if it was some alternate thing instead
i probably forgot stuff but if i think of more i will add them later with a little note that it was added in an edit (sidenote, i find it funny how much more nuance that whole conflict would get if rauru and ganondorf were bitter exes bfdrjfbdfndk)
#ganondoodles talks#zelda#totk#totk spoilers#i felt like i was beign a little unfair#so i wanted to make a summary#tha took me hours to write#and is again long as shit#whoop#long post#this isnt a complete list iether bc that would be even longer and take even longer nhdjkkd#i wanted to do comic works damn it#anyway this is the last long post about this#bc im moving on now#...its half inspired by people respondign to me with -what how can you not like totks story but then like botws lol wtf-#well i do#*shrugs*

While I was looking for that original art of the "Guide to Taking Care of Your VHS Tapes" a bit ago, I noticed that the issue of Animage (May 1993) also surprisingly had a roundtable between Hideaki Anno, Junichi Sato, and Kunihiko Ikuhara!
I hadn't ever read it, and googling around did not reveal any discussion of it, so I was curious if it had anything interesting. And while I just skimmed it, it doesn't really lol, probably why it isn't covered. But still, this roundtable was right after the release of Season 1 of Sailor Moon for Sato & Ikuhara; and after Nadia was done but before Eva was entering production for Ano - a nice "middle period", which is always interesting to me. Random little notes:
A bunch of back and forth on the "anime is becoming involuted, we should be aiming for Cannes not otaku" stuff. At one point Anno says something like: "Nowadays, anime is becoming increasingly niche, especially in the OVA space, with more and more works catering to fans' tastes. It feels like the industry is closing in on itself." Which, yeah this is the Eva theme right here, it is fully realized in industry-critique form in 1993. Take note you true believers in the Eva "mid-production pivot" ^_^
At one point look at the magazine's Waifu Rankings and Ikuhara & Anno both lament that Rei/Sailor Mars - Ikuhara's fav - is placed so low. Sato judges them both, and laments "adults" calling an anime character their "ideal woman" - wrong crowd buddy!
Related, Anno thinks Rei is the hottest but Makoto would make the best wife. Pretty based take tbh.
Anno repeatedly tells them to never try to cater to the audience, which leads to this exchange (to paraphrase): Ikuhara - "So, the concept for Anno's next project would be 'Don't let the masses watch it,' right?" Anno - "That's right. At least, my next work won't be for fools." I think he nailed that one!
Lots of discussion of short skirted girls, and they are drinking during this whole roundtable. Ah, the 90's!
Anyway, there is this little note in the corner of one page:
And I won't lie, the scan quality is pretty rough so I am banking hard on the OCR tech for some of that kanji, but I think it says that Anno actually animated the special effects for this shot? It is from the first episode of the finale arc:
We knew he worked on Sailor Moon S - specifically the Uranus & Neptune transformation sequences & a few other moments here and there. But I had never seen this credit before for Season 1 (maybe it is somewhere ofc). Throw his name on the staff list MyAnimeList, give his 2 seconds its due! Unless I am misreading, which is fair.
So there you go, some cute sakuga trivia for y'all - Anno was an 'effects' shot specialist after all, you don't bring him in for character motion, so this makes sense as a role for him.

ok i’m very curious - can i ask abt spatial horror? 👀
Omg hi I’m gonna go off about it now
Spacial horror describes how the physical space/setting in a piece of media is used to enhance/convey the horror. And idk I’m a huge slut for it here are some of my fav examples of things that have great use of spatial horror below the cut (my ass did not proofread)
House of leaves:
one of the main ways this book creates horror and conveys its main theme is through the house. The house reacts and responds to the characters deep rooted trauma and insecurities and warps around them. The horror builds from the idea that it’s wrong. At first, the house expands by like 1/4 of an inch, and it’s like bait, just a little taste because the house knows that Navidson is easily tempted, and once it has him, it creates a physical abyss that parallels the mental one he’s trapped in.
The labyrinth spaces of house are constantly described as cold, vast and dark and used to create an oppressive and foreign feeling, turning the image of a suburban home into an alien entity. That turning of normal into alien starts in the 5 and a half minute hallway, but it quickly spreads through even the unaffected areas of the house as the characters both desperately try and make it normal, or chase the abnormal to a dangerous degree. Their whole lives become dangerous and alien within the confines of the house.
The way the house creates space and danger runs alongside the way space and distance and conflict is created between the characters. Caution and exploration create expanses and voids, confidence creates clearer paths, confusion creates winding mazes, and when Navidson decides to venture in for his last time, the house envelopes him and destroys him. (But love creates doors and openings)
There is no monster in House of Leaves, no Minotaur in the labyrinth, just the characters and the things that a cruel place brings out of them.
“Gods a house. Which is not to say that our house is Gods house, or even a house of God. What I mean to say is that our house is God.”
Skinamarink:
Honestly my read of this movie is different then a lot of what I’ve seen on Tumblr,,, like the idea that it’s about like the liminal feeling of being awake at a time you aren’t suppose to as a child never rlly connected w/ me, so I interpreted it different.
I read Skinamarink as a commentary on horror as a genre. Most of the shots of this movie are of the house, whether a wall, window (or lack thereof) or corner, the house is the star of the film. The movie makes us hyperaware of the space the kids occupy.
Since it’s a horror movie, we go in with the expectation that there is a monster, ghost, supernatural something, whatever, and the film uses out expectations against us. It’s like the camera, in its obscure focus on dark corners, invites us to look for a monster. Like that’s what horror fans are trained to do when we see shit like that.
Skinamarink utilizes the expectations of a haunted house to make us want to see a monster. It’s a slow burn, but my thesis on this movie ultimately comes to how the direction makes the audience the monster, and it ends up as a commentary on horror as a genre. And the use of expectations for the house makes that possible. In the beginning, the windows and doors vanish, trapping the kids inside, so we’re primed to think there’s some sort of ghost or smth, and we carry that expectation throughout the film. I come to the conclusion that we create the monster with those expectations.
“Put the knife in your eye”
Fear and hunger:
This game has one of the most oppressive atmospheres ever it’s so crazy. The dungeons of feta and hunger are a crushing and evil place that’s been transformed and mutated, and change the people who venture into it.
There is no good end to fear and hunger. Even the best ending for the characters, where they achieve their goals. If cahara escapes with all the money, he’s forever haunted by the dungeons. If d’arce revives l’garde he has forever changed for the worse and they will wreak mayhem until death. By playing the game, you’ve already doomed the characters.
There are monsters inside, but the true horror is the dungeon itself. The creatures inside have been trapped, allured, tormented, and they fight you, but the true enemy is the space itself, and is inescapable even when you get out.
The dungeons of fear and hunger are the scariest part of that game and story. And you have to watch the character grapple and try their best under the crushing weight of an evil place.
“A terrifying presence has entered the room…”
Conclusion:
I love when physical space is used for horror. Like there’s so many ways, whether by warping around the characters, twisting something familiar into something foreign, forcing the viewer into it, playing with expectations, or just being a crushing and evil place.
When a place is an entity in itself, whether literally or metaphorically, it’s really juicy for me idfk. Everyone should read house of leaves it made me cry like 4 times in my first read.
Spatial horror I find far more inescapable, too. You can run from a killer, or fight back, but can you fight against your own home? You’re one person, can you tear down the dungeons of fear and hunger? The camera forces you into the Skinamarink house, there nothing you can do. And the house traps the kids real good.
Idk man spatial horror just scratches that itch for me

Some musings abt the soon to be Precure season
So i took a look at the new website and bruhhh
they're so tacky looking and cute I love them! I'd actually gotten spoiled for Cure Wonderful and Cure Nyami's designs thanks to fanart on pixiv, and at the time I thought the season was going to have an Alice and Wonderland motif thanks to Wonderful's crown [thought she was gonna be like the queen of hearts but nope]. After checking out the website and trailer tho, it seems like the theme is more of a zoo and or animal companion theme. When I first realized that I thought to myself "wait haven't we been here before?" but thinking about it further Healing Good's theme was more along the lines of veterinarians and the earth[?] and Kira Kira Precure's was moreso just animals as window dressing/attack inspo with sweets being the main theme so I suppose we're not technically retreading old ground here. Speaking of not retreading old ground- HOLY SHIT THE MAIN CURE IS A DOG??
Just like...a full on dog dog bruh, like dang man I never thought i'd see the day where we'd essentially get a fairy leading the team. It seems like the team's split into both humans and animals, with Cure Nyami definitely being that white cat
This is exciting! I love that Precure's held onto having fairies transform into humans, it's so heckin fun! Back to the designs- In order of my favorite to least favorite it's Cure Nyami [look at that hair bruh! she is beauty, she is grace]
Cure Friend [the poncho and hair are my fav]
Cure Wonderful [she looks like such a peppy kid awwww]
and lastly Cure Lillian [her arm thingies remind me of Futari Wa and I adore that ribbon]
Honestly, I think this may be the first time since Kira Kira Precure that I've been immediately on board with the designs. I ended up loving Hirogaru's over time but at first glance, I couldn't get over how weird they looked [never fully ended up liking Cure Wing's design but still love the character]. The only thing I dislike about them is Lillian's headband, and the big heart on Friend's shoes. I'm sort of a big sucker for poofy/frilly skirts, long straight hair, and ponchos so I feel well-fed. I'm especially looking forward to seeing them all in motion, especially Lillian since based on her turnaround she seems to have a bit of sass to her. Based on Nyami's turnarounds/previews she seems to be more of a kuudere[?] type which isn't something we've gotten for a main cure in a while. There's also all of these guys just hangin' out on the site too
Can't wait to see what these lil guys can do, hoping that they'll be connected to powerups and maybe even special outfits/attacks [really enjoyed it when Happiness Charge did that]. But maaaan this is so cool. It seems like ever since Hirogaru decided to play around with Precure conventions they're going all out with unique approaches to the formula. One thing I hope they continue doing this season tho, is keeping the fighting style as a literal fighting style like super sentai where they actually throw punches. I love Kira Kira, but there's only so many times [like 2] that I can watch someone fight by pointing a wand at something before I start skipping the battles. Really loved how Hirogaru frequently would have the characters strategize in battle, it really kept me engaged even if I always know how it'll end. All-in-all, it's sad to see Hirogaru go, but I'm excited with what new stories await in the new season! ^^
#i'm just here for the free food.#precure spoilers#Precure#precure leaks#cure wonderful#cure nyami#Cure Friend#cure lillian#cure nyammy#wonderful precure#precure 2024

🧛😈(hehe)
🧛- If you had to become a mythical creature, which one are you picking?
Im afraid to say I have most certainly imagined myself as a vampire, mostly as a teen in my Twilight phase. so.. that. unless I could transform into a dragon. because who wouldnt want to be a dragon.
😈- What villain or monster do you think is misunderstood?
ok well let me just say some of my fav halloween movies ever as a kid were movies like Scary Godmother and Halloweentown High, and there is a very clear through-line of every monster being misunderstood and just wanting love. and i think that was very... formative
also the dorky answer is Frankenstein's monster, which was ALSO a favorite reading of mine in high school, and he is famously misunderstood and just wanted love (oh boy theres a recurring theme here)

How I imagine Ash’s relationship with his friends to be(Part 1):
Ash, brock & misty are the og trio: There’s no way that brock and misty don’t hold a very special place in Ash’s heart. Ash knows he wasn’t the most likeable child but his journeys with the two of them transformed him into the Ash he is now. Whenever Ash sees rock themed stuff or unique cooking utensils, his mind immediately goes to brock. Same with water themed shit and bug pokemon. He talks with them quite regularly and the group chat they have is complete chaos. Brock is Ash’s big brother. He’s the first one Ash turns to for comfort. Misty and Ash start bickering, bantering and making fun of each other within 2 minutes of talking, but know that the other would wholeheartedly back them up no questions asked.
Ash and Gary are the ultimate besties: They grew up together and were there for each other during the hardest parts of their lives - Ash’s father leaving and Gary’s parents dying. They motivate each other to be the best versions of themselves that they can be. In my ideal world, Ash and Gary did not have quite a big falling out as shown in the show because they talked things out and didn’t let any misunderstandings get in the way of the special bond they have. Although they act quite gay for each other, their relationship is 100% platonic (I personally love ash x gary however their friendship dynamic where everybody thinks they’re dating but they’re actually not and don’t ever plan to be is my fav). Ash is the one who helped Gary realise that researching was the path for him.
Ash, Max and Bonnie: Max and Bonnie are the little siblings that he never had. He loves them to pieces and even if they can get a little annoying sometimes, he wouldn’t change it for the world. Whenever he sees anything that he thinks Max would like, he buys it without hesitation and mails it over. Same goes for bonnie. Both May and Clemont are completely exasperated because their respective siblings keep flexing whatever Ash has gotten for them.
Ash & May are the gremlin twins: Brock had quite the time with these two. He thought that no-one could surpass the trouble that Ash and Misty gave him but he was wrong. Those two would get too caught up in arguing with each other, but these two were on the same wavelength. Sure they had a few disputes but most of the time they got along like a house on fire. They managed to get themselves into all sorts of crazy situations. Max and Brock would have to work together to manage whatever shenanigans they got upto. Ash is insufferable in shipping May and drew. He teases her and mocks her and writes cringy fanfictions about the two of them so he could embarrass her.
They always practice battling together so they can refine their needed skills (contest flair for may and speed and precision for Ash). When the two of them get together, they can eat anyone out of house and home.

.......hello 👀
MAWS liveblog: part 1 (1x01-1x02)
Episode 1
BABY BOY!!!!!!!! BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THAT'S MY SON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
==
OH MY GOD SHUT UP HIS CLOCK IS A CHICKEN!!!!!! THAT'S SO ADORABLE!!!!!!!!!!
==
AND THEY WERE ROOMATES!!!!!!!!
==
MY WIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
==
she's angry and also a vicki vale fan, i love her 😭
==
AND SO DOES HE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
==
YES HE'S BABY!!!!!!!!!!
==
hmm i like lois having a more established career at the point she meets clark, but i can work with this (sv!lois hadn't even graduated yet and she's my fav so)
==
he's so in love with her already, we love a man with taste
==
loving this dynamic already
==
everything is so ultra-tech-y, there's tablets with holograms, computers with stupid transparent screens, all weapons are laser
and yet, the newspaper is not only still printed but also delivered by kids
==
love the uncanny blue of clark's eyes
==
gotta admit, i'm not a fan of lois also being instantly into clark, i like when he's instantly into her but she's too career-focused to even pay him any attention, and is also a bit mean to him (but he likes it) (bonus points if there's a bit of a rivalry going on bc he keeps getting scoops and she can't figure out how)
==
now that's better >:3
==
omg captain america
==
what do these lasers even do, his clothes are intact????
==
this poor man experiencing pain for the first time in like 20 years probably
==
???????????????????
==
wait then whose tie was it??????
==
==
Episode 2
JUST HOW BIG IS THIS SHIP???????
==
OOOOOOOOOOOO SPOKEN KRYPTONIAN
now i REALLY want to know how they developed the language, bc i don't think it's ever been spoken before
==
NOOOOOOOO THE BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
==
isn't that the name of, like, that one kryptonian hero that was nightwing's sidekick or something?? (don't wanna google it in case there's maws spoilers)
wonder if it's gonna be a plot point or just a easter egg
==
wait i think the base for the spoken kryptonian was latin (which is a pity, i was hoping for hebrew)
==
i'm not saying i dislike this lois, but... she's a bit too quirky and immature... :/ i get that they're younger here than in most adaptations but i mean, smallville!lois was even younger and she's perfect
but it's ok, it's a children's cartoon, i can live with it.
==
oh my god they gave him a magical girl transformation
full disclosure: i'm not really into anime, so this does nothing to me except make me :/ that we're not getting the "baby blanket sewn by martha" version
==
ma'am the word you're looking for is definitely not shorts
==
the animation on this series is really not that good with expression tbh, like, the voice actors are going hard and the character is just =[]
i wasn't huge on the art style bc i thought it was too anime-like but one thing you definitely can't say about anime is that it's not expressive, so it's feeling like a lose/lose situation over here lol
==
i mean, come on
==
ugh, references to the classic superman theme always Get Me
==
wait, there's a regular bedroom but also a bunkbed in the living room? who designed this apartment????
==
ok the woman is probably amanda waller and the military guy is very likely general lane, but who tf is this tumblr sexyman-looking bitch supposed to be
==
ok, final impression? it's cute, it's fun, most of the issues i have with it can be answered with "it's a children's cartoon". i'm glad a new generation of kids is being given a new superman series, which is the important thing here (and i mean, the cartoon that got me into superman was fucking krypto the superdog, so). can't wait to get my little cousins and nephews into it!!
the biggest disappointment is probably lois and clois, tbh. she might even eventually develop into a more accurate version of the character, but the get-together that they're going with is definitely not how i'd prefer (and the early-on identity-porn era is my favourite for them, so it's double the :/). but it's ok, there's tons of other adaptations and comics out there that do show them that way (and more on the horizon! here's hoping 'superman: legacy' delivers, the casting is already amazing so 🤞🏻)
anyway, i'm gonna be going through the eps kinda slowly bc i'm pretty busy, so it's definitely not gonna be like my usual half-a-season-in-one-sitting liveblogs (god i miss having vacations)
#hi this is me ignoring the fact that i'm behind on literally EVERY SINGLE ONE of the tv series i watch and starting a new one#do it for them [pictures of clois]!!! (yes one of the series i'm behind on is smallville shhh)#f: dc#g: dc animations#s: maws#mari liveblogs

❔ c:
my god your writing and muses are so gorgeous there's just so many i'm going to cap at neverafter at first so i don't write 10 novels but i have more i -
SNOW WHITE & ELODY. spoilers for dimension20's series neverafter to follow. ok, is this one of my fav d20 series? yes. will i roleplay litchrally anyone from it? yes. i would love to explore the dynamic of elody, abandoned by gerard, being approached by these princesses and their plot to 'retake their lives,' in a sense. i think snow white uniquely would be interesting to run up against her in parallels of abandonment, both perceived and actual. bulletpoint plot/thread ideas below:
the initial recruitment as a thread plotline; this could serve as a great opener to introduce our characters to one another, as well as establish a precursor for how it all happened. would love to explore elody's reaction to the first 'story' in which the tpk happened unravelling as well.
battle threads with the faeries, please.
the fallout from meeting gerard & co., especially considering the lore bomb gerard dropped on elody's head before peacing out into the snow with the rest of them. her hair is eevryWHERE ~~
post-neverafter resolutions. what do their lives look like? how did they rewrite their stories? is it everything they end up dreaming about?
YLFA & GERARD. spoilers for dimension20's series neverafter to follow. let's explore the (unwilling) transformation of two people into animals and the long-lasting effects that has on them. bonus points for contrasts of their reactions and/or levels of acceptance. bonus bonus points for the spicy underlying theme of humanity and pieces of themselves slipping away. bulletpoint plot/thread ideas below:
please let them have the classic late-night keeping-watch private chat where they discuss how it felt to die.
ylfa subconsciously encouraging gerard to dissect his marriage because she's got a crush on 'nocchi and asks gerard, a certified Wife Man(tm), relationship advice. and where his went wrong. HEE HEE.
gerard teaches ylfa sword forms. they go horribly wrong.
goes without saying, but post-neverafter resolutions pt2. i'd also love to explore an AU where things DON'T get the happily-ever-after written ending and they're more or less 'doomed' to stay as ''''animals''' forever. i'd love to see how they react to that.
'QT PLAYS DEALER'S CHOICE NEVERAFTER CHARACTER HERE' & GERARD/ELODY. no but literally this is just a free space where if there's someone i haven't listed (pib, nocchi, minor characters, villains, the faeries) that you'd love to see against gerard or elody, i GOTCHU FAM
BONUS ROUND FEAT. SPUR OF THE MOMENT THREAD IDEAS:
meera reed confronts theon greyjoy for the deaths of two innocent boys following her return to winterfell (obviously would fall into the grey space between book & show canon).
an exploration into how rue and wuvvy came to be: their partnership, their devotion, just love em. LOVE EM.
red makes a bargain with drisella, in an almost direct juxtaposition to cinderella and her faerie godmother. [red vc] i aint work for Free
how to con henri out of his immense wealth while also not dying hideously in the process feat. mercy
send ❔ and i’ll list a couple muses that i’d like to throw at yours (feat: plot bunnies) for @ateliaers.

11, 22, 29 and 30 for the ask game
Thanks so much for the ask! <3
Let's see...
11: A WIP I'd like to finish someday...
Oh god, I have SO MANY. I think there are 2 that are at the absolute top of my list that are actually very close to completion. Sympathy Pain is one I've been working on since like, Feb... It's probably my fav thing I've ever written, and it's been sitting in limbo at 95% complete since about March. T_T (It literally hurts so bad to sit on this) The other is a 5 part series of oneshots. It's a sexy, dark, gritty Enemies AU. The first part is finished, the 2nd is half done, and the others are framed out. I had to put everything on pause when I joined this year's MLB Big bang though.
22: Do I worry about public reaction and how do I get past that?
I really have no shame, I guess! Hahaha. I like to write mature themes. Adult themes, and though I haven't posted too many, I'm sitting on a lot of content right now, haha. The thing is, that I really want people to read and like my stuff, and if they don't like what I put out then... well, I don't care XD Like I do, I guess. but not everyone enjoys 'adult' content and that's just fine. But anyone who's gonna be an ass about it can eat tacks, hahaha It's not just adult content either. I gravitate towards dark and painful things. I like to torture the blorbos. I'm not above writing a bittersweet or even bitter ending. Of course I love them and want them to be happy, but sometimes things don't end well for everyone! Some people can't stand that.
29: How easy is it for me to come up with titles?
Generally, I'm not too bad with it. I've come up with some great titles pretty quickly/easily. I also have people in my life I can bounce Ideas off of. But not every fic is that easy to title. Like the enemies AU I'm working on. I have a name for the first, completed part. I have yet to come up with a series name. ><
30: Share a fic I'm particularly proud of:
Oh please, give this a chance. It's really dark/bleak depressing, so I get that it won't be everyone's cup of tea. But my god, I love this fic SO much. It also kinda plays out like a mystery; you don't really know what's going on until you do. And when you do, it's got that 'heart sinking' feeling. (Or at least I hope it does) This is probably one of the most poetic, heartbreaking, deeply emotional things I've ever written.

Filled it out by myself ;) TW for self harm and suicide
💡 - How did you come to create this oc and what were you inspired by? My first SM OC was Lucy. I was inspired to make an OC after finally watching Tender Treats and Bob became my fav. However, I didn't want to instantly make an OC shipped with him. Instead, I made her to be his enemy, which is why I made her with poison abilities. She was mainly inspired by Medusa. I specifically got ideas from other media, such as ATLA, MLP, etc. Wendy was then Bob's love interest. However I didn't want to make her one of these "Ohhh I kill and eat people too lol" OCs, which is why I made her into a wendigo. Babs actually was first inspired by the one family guy episode where we meet Quagmires abused sister Brenda, then also Fluttershy. Also the trope of a close one in bliss. I wanted her to be opposite from Bob, as I see a lot of his relatives, especially kids, also being crazy killers.
♥️ - Do they have a partner? And if so, are they a canon character or another oc? So far, all my OCs are shipped with canon characters, but I am open to OC x OC ships too! Wendy X Bob, Lucy X Carmen, Natalie X Patty, Louhi X John, Babs X Lila, Vincent X Michelle, Lyca X Streber, Azura X Rick (I don't care about doubles, the more shippers, the better lol)
✨ - Are they part of the cult? What is their role there then? Nope, none! I see a ton of OCs in the cult and I think we need some balance with OCs working against the cult. Plus, I am not that interested in it.
🎞️ - If your oc existed in the series, in which episodes would they appear and what would change? I am not sure about it, as with their jobs and lore, they'd really interfere with canon events. Such as Vincent following/comforting Michelle and not letting Moloch kill her. Lyca would pick up Bob's scent from Streber and beat the shit out of him once she catches up. Minor events: Azura would probably also be in front of the car with Rick during Hollow Sorrows, while Natalie would also be shown in the hospital.
🌈 - What is the sexuality and gender identity of your oc? So far I only have cis males and females. Wendy/Lyca - Pansexual, Lucy - Lesbian, Vincent/Azura - Hetero, Natalie - Asexual/Biromantic, Louhi/Babs - Bisexual
⌛ - How old is your oc (in age terms)? All are adults. The coven leader and Vincent are 800+. Lyca is chronologically 68, while physically and mentally she is 33. The rest are young adults, till Natalie and Wendy. For the witches their ages are mostly random and based on their personality and lore. But you never know as they can be far older than they look.
🏡 - Do they have any family or are they related to a canonical character? Babs is Bob's younger sister. Vincent later sees Dexter as his own son.
💼 - Where and what does your oc work? Babs - Librarian, Wendy - Hair stylist, Vincent - Restaurant critic, Louhi - Waitress, Lucy - Florist, Natalie - Nurse, Lyca - Cop, Azura - Bodyguard
⚰️ - Do they die at some point or have they had a near-death experience? Wendy technically died many many times, she's semi immortal and heals by eating human meat. Lucy and Lyca have big scars from...incidents. Babs unalives herself after finding out Bob died.
📼 - What would be their favorite movie or what movie do you associate with them? Wendy loves horror movies. Lucy likes feminism and romance (wlw) themed ones. Azura prefers neutral nature documentaries.
🎧 - What would be their favorite song or what song do you relate to them? So far none, I am bad with themesongs.
🔪 - Have they ever killed someone? Wendy killed her father during her first wendigo transformation and also family (also without intention) who found her in the woods and took her in. Lyca killed people during her job. Vincent has killed several cult members before to show them they can't force him to join. Babs shot her ex, as he was about to kill Bob.
👹 - Are they humans or something different? Vincent - Vampire, Lyca - Werewolf, Wendy - Witch/Wendigo, Lucy, Louhi, Natalie and Azura are witches.
🐾 - Do they have pets or would they like to have one? None has one!
💔 - Is there any canon character that your oc hates? Lucy HATES Bob's guts and wants him gone, she also doesn't get along with Dexter and John. She also hates Jaune because she hates Carmen. Vincent's mortal enemy is Moloch after he killed Michelle, same for Lyca with Bob after he injured Streber.
🚫 - Anything your oc CAN'T do? Babs can't cook for shit, it is either a chemical weapon or a charcoal. Probably more things with the others, but can't think of anything specific atm.
👍 - What is the best feature of your oc? Lucy is a master toxicologist and the strongest witch in the coven after the leader magic wise. Wendy and Lyca are crazy strong and agile. Vincent is rich af and also gathered a lot of knowledge. Babs is kind and selfless.
👎 - What is the worst feature of your oc? Lucy is a bitch if she dislikes someone and lets them know it. Wendy and Lyca are prone to violence when upset, same with Natalie. Azura's resting bitch face and monotone voice makes people think she's bored 24/7. Babs' kindess makes her get taken advantage of a lot.
🥀 - What is the worst moment in your oc's life so far? Babs finding out her brother died and is a cannibal killer cultist. For Wendy...basically the night of the sacrifice (she ate her cult as a wendigo). Azura losing her leg and Natalie going blind. Vincent first seeing Michelle suffer and then losing her.
🎪 - Any hobbies your oc has? Lucy - Gardening, Wendy and Lyca - Working out, hiking, etc., Louhi - Sewing, Babs - Drawing/Painting
🗻 - What is your oc's favorite place? Babs likes peace and quiet, so the library she works at. Wendy loves the woods.
I didn't see anyone do this so...
🎃Spooky month oc ask game💀
💡 - How did you come to create this oc and what were you inspired by?
♥️ - Do they have a partner? And if so, are they a canon character or another oc
✨ - Are they part of the cult? What is their role there then?

🍳- Character that you would go to Brunch with
🤍- Fav Neutral or Obscure Character?
🎶- Best Theme song?
🥇- Favorite TF series
🤖- What got you into TF?
🍳 - G1 Jazz!!!! Partly bc I love him so, so much, partly bc I think he would be absolutely ecstatic to go to a place that actually serves energon for brunch!!!! ALSO bc I need to give him shit for the fact his name is literally Jazz yet his favorite music genre is rock 'n roll and I think he is perhaps the only version of Jazz that would not consider maiming me for that opinion. Perhaps marvel Jazz would work too, but, like, that Jazz is a Madonna fan and I'd get too distracted with that fact to even ask his thoughts on real jazz.
🤍 - SCROUNGE <3333333333 FROM THE MARVEL COMICS!!!!! HE IS INDEED THE SPECIALIST LITTLE GUY THAT HE THINKS HE IS AND HIS ARM IS SO COOL AND BLASTER VALUES HIM SO MUCH AS A FRIEND AND I LOVEEEEEEEEEEE HIM <3333333333 I once started a fic abt Blaster keeping his memory drive as his only possession and being super emotionally attached to it in extremely unhealthy ways. And then, in an effort to move on after many years on earth, he builds Eject and Rewind, but Rewind could see the molten ghost that hovered around Blaster. Basically he has a fucking meltdown from his first seconds of awareness trying and failing to comprehend what he is seeing and that shapes his entire core interest of data gathering. I never managed to finish it, but I still have a few scenes floating around in my drafts about Rewind "growing up" (growing up as much as one can when they pop out of their planet with the same functioning as any other adult) and learning the world through his dead uncle.
Also Rumble is my favorite transformer ever, but I wouldn't consider him obscure, just unappreciated.
🎶 - The rescue bots theme song!!!! Ik rescue bots is Definitely not everybody's cup of tea, but anyone who has not listened to its theme is truly depriving themselves of one of life's greatest joys!!!! :D!!!!!
🥇 - I don't think I really have one?? This is hard. I have a super big soft spot for g1, but there's so many characters and so little development on them that I find it hard to analyze and write stuff for like I do most series I'm into. I also adore idw, but it's inconsistent characterization and problems from dealing with a bunch of different writers can really irk me at times. I think I'm gonna have to go with Transformers Go! Go! for this one 'cause that's the continuity my brain has currently latched its death-grip onto. There was a super awesome blog translating all of them that I follow (transformers-translations I believe) but a few days ago all their work got brought down by staff and I'm hoping they're gonna move to some other platform.
🤖 - THIS one is easy!!! One of my good irl friends was (and still is) super into transformers at the same time I was in a big depression rut from having no hyperfixation :3 I followed him into this fandom and I have absolutely zero regrets :D!!!!!

MY THOUGHTS ON SPLATOON 3: RETURN OF THE MAMMALIANS (WARNING: LONG POST + SPOILERS):
If I only had known, I could've customized Captain 3 (you can do it ONLY before doing the very first mission. EDIT: ok, you can do it whenever u want);
The levels were waaaay too easy at first, but y'know, nothing is as what it seems;
DJ Octavio as the first boss was such a good twist (and his theme's remix is a freakin' banger);
Nintendo really did a great job by mixing up the normal story mode and the Octo Expansion formulas for this one;
ZIPCASTER LEVELS MY BELOVED (also the infinite Splashdown, the Crab Tank and the “Dive & Dash" ones have to be my favs);
O.R.C.A. is definitely the S3 equivalent of C.Q. Cumber, except that, instead of killing you by exploding an ink pack located on your ass, it illuminates you with the light of God... and then showers you to death, which I find more unsettling than infuriating (it is still infuriating tho);
SMALLFRY BEST BUDDY EVER. Too bad it can't participate in most of the missions tho;
I actually knew from the start that Deep Cut was going to be part of this whole thing, but not as enemies (at least their intentions weren't evil);
Basically, Frye's boss fight was made to punish whoever made fun of her forehead. Also, one more thing: IS THAT A FREAKIN' OCTOSTOMP CORPSE;
Shiver's boss fight made me think of BABY SHARK DOO-DOO DOO DOODOODOO BABY SHARK DOO-DOO DOO DOODOOD- ok nvm;
BIG MAN BECAME LITERALLY PHANTAMANTA FROM SUPER MARIO SUNSHINE WHAT (even the ink color was the same);
All the enemies looked kinda funny to me (in all senses!). I wish the enemy Octolings appeared more tho;
The rocket ship part (before departing) had me nervous ngl;
Mr. Grizz was cute and scary at the same time. Well, actually MOSTLY scary. I mean, just that soulless stare of his made me shiver (no, not the character), also he was basically Void Termina, Commander Tartar, Leongar and Fecto Forgo/Elfilis mixed together;
That one scene where 3 and Smallfry departed to space was a very Pokémon ORAS Delta Episode moment;
Grizz's boss fight was the most unnerving one of the game, but when DJ Octavio arrived, Calamari Inkantation 3MIX started playing and Smallfry transformed into Hugefry, I had an absolute blast! Also Hugefry VS Grizz = Godzilla VS King Kong;
The secret level is a PAIN, it's basically the equivalent (or maybe even worse) of Inner Agent 3's boss fight, but as a level a la Champion's Road from SM3DW. Still didn't beat it tho. EDIT: just beat the level. TWICE. GG to me yay. QwQ
In a few words: I had an amazINK experience with the story mode, except it also scarred me a bit. Can't wait for the DLC!

Do you have any horror movies to recommend for someone just getting into the genre? I’m down with almost anything as long as it doesn’t take place in a psych ward. If that’s too much work you can totally ignore this!
oh boy do i!!! sorry for this taking so long, i started infodumping a little and i wanted to include, like, a decently-sized list.
general warning tht this is based entirely on my own personal taste, and i tend to like shitty (quality-wise) movies sometimes. i'll try n include whatever trigger warnings i can think of so u can pick n choose what ur willing to sit thru! (general TW for blood/gore, obviously)
the evil dead (1981), evil dead 2 (1987) & army of darkness (1992):
these r all part of one series*, n one of my comfort franchises!! evil dead is notorious for bouncing around genres - the first movie is straight-up horror w some comedy, the 2nd is horror-comedy, and the 3rd is slapsticky action comedy w a bit of horror thrown in. it's got sick low-budget sfx, n was directed by sam raimi! the basic plot synopsis is that a group of college students go to spend a weekend in a cabin in the woods, accidentally discover something called the necronomicon ex mortis, and end up summoning otherworldly demons ("deadites"). ash (one of the characters) is one of my fav horror protags ever, and also definitely trans if u ask me. the entire evil dead franchise is pretty much just bruce campbell being a himbo and everything going wrong, it’s a fun time [TW: demonic possession, brief sexual assault (two scenes, in the 1st n 2nd movies; everyone who worked on it agrees they were done entirely for shock value, and u can probably find an edit that cuts them out, or timestamps to skip them), general vulgarity (deadites have mouths on em), self harm (one scene in the 2nd movie), body horror (deadites aren't pretty), emeto] * the series is continued in the show "ash vs the evil dead", however that contains a brief psych ward subplot in one of the seasons, so i'm not including it in this list. those themes are absent from the movies, though!
the fly (1986):
i never shut up abt this movie, ever. it's absolutely devastating. it's a tragic romance and a scifi horror movie all rolled into one. in the movie, a scientist by the name of seth brundle has invented teleportation, and has enlisted reporter veronica quaife to tell his story. one night, seth is drunk and upset and teleports himself - not noticing that a fly is in the telepod with him. the machine is only programmed to handle 1 thing at once, so it accidentally fuses seth and the fly together, causing him to slowly transform into a half-bug-half-human monster. it's absolutely heartbreaking and also the best thing i've ever seen jeff goldblum in tbh. (it's a remake of an old 50s movie of the same name, though this version is a lot sadder afaik) this isn't rlly a super beginner movie i don't think - as i said, it's got a lot of gross body horror, and it's one of david cronenberg's best works (if not THE best of his works), so it's a bit intense - but i will take literally any opportunity to plug this movie. [TW: major body horror, possible self harm? (not sure if it counts if it's not entirely intentional), animal death, insects, pregnancy (both as a subplot and played on for horror), discussions of abortion, alcohol, emeto]
friday the 13th (1980) & friday the 13th part 2 (1981):
i know everyone knows jason via media osmosis, but i feel like the first 2 movies really don't fit people's knowledge of him as a character - i was definitely a little thrown the first time i saw them! idk how much i can really say without spoiling it, but you probably know the basics: teens and/or young adults go to an old summer camp with the intention of becoming camp counsellors, they get slowly hunted down and killed. [TW: in-world ableism (sort of inherent w jason as a character), animal death (extra icky bc this wasn't sfx), implied/referenced child death, general ableism (in regards to psychosis specifically, i believe), flashing lights, shakycam pov, cultural appropriation (a white character mocking native american culture)]
black christmas (1974):
one of my favourite movies ever! ik i'm saying that a lot, but this one's extra good. black christmas came pretty early on in the invention of slashers, and therefore subverts a lot of slasher tropes simply by being created before they were established. it's the good ol "babysitter and the man upstairs" urban legend mixed around a little bit; a bunch of girls at a sorority christmas party are repeatedly harassed by a man on the phone, and end up mysteriously disappearing one by one. this movie gives me total chills. it isn't super bloody, either - most of the kills happen off-screen. it's a total "sometimes your imagination is scarier than what we could show you" deal. [TW: nsfw dialogue (the killer, billy, is dubbed "the moaner" for a reason), off-screen child death (both strongly implied and directly confirmed), general paranoia-inducing content, lots of loud noises (billy definitely doesn't fit the silent slasher trope), alcohol, shakycam pov]
house of wax (2005):
so admittedly i'm a little biased, bc i have a genuine fear of wax figures, but this movie scares the everloving shit out of me. a group of friends are driving out together somewhere in louisiana, when their cars break down - a nearby trucker offers to drive some of them to the nearest town to find help, which they accept. they end up at the small, quiet town of ambrose, with the main attraction of the house of wax - an art piece featuring an entire building, complete with residents, made of wax. without spoiling all the details: it turns out there's a reason the wax figures look so realistic, and it turns out the artist is looking to add a few new ones. it's also hilariously, painfully 2000s, and has a mcr song as the credits song, so. [TW: general uncanny valley weirdness, torture (both active and passive), child abuse (physical and emotional - both shown on-screen), paranoia-inducing shit, the generally ableist trope of disfigured villains, etc.]
scream 1-4 (1996-2011):
(scream 5 is only not included bc it's not out yet and therefore i haven't seen it) scream is one of my favourite movies ever!! it's pretty much what jumpstarted my slasher fixation. it's half a parody and half a genuine slasher movie - it's meta and self-referential and so, so smart at what it does. the basic plot, without spoiling too much, is that, on the 1 year anniversary of the town's biggest court case, the small town of woodsboro is tormented by a serial killer, disguised by a cheap halloween costume, who calls his victims on the phone and asks them for their favourite scary movie. he then has a fun little trivia game with them, and any small mistake they make when answering will lead to their death. it's funny and creepy and so very very gay (seriously - there's a whole lot of strong lgbtq+ implications, and i'm pretty sure the writer has outright stated that certain scenes are full-on gay metaphors between characters). the sequels vary in quality (2 is the best and 3 is the worst imo), but they're all pretty damn fun. i wouldn't recommend jumping into it as your first horror movie, since it references a lot of well-known horror flicks and spoils the endings for a few, but if you're fine with that, it holds up even without the satirical context imo. the first movie is one of few slasher movies where i care about every single character, they’re all so charismatic and memorable (and sid is one of the best protags ever, don’t @ me)! [TW: mentions of off-screen rape (past), manipulative relationships, very mild sexual content (characters talking about sex, sexual innuendos, etc), alcohol, child death (characters in the first movie range from about 17 to 19), casual ableism (e.g. killers being referred to as "psychotic")]
saw (2004):
ok hear me out here: saw gets a bad rep. like, a REALLY bad rep. it's often dismissed as just flat out torture porn, but i'd argue the first movie isn't even close to that - it's a thriller, with some gorey scenes thrown in. the basic plot is that a serial killer by the name of jigsaw kidnaps people who he sees as morally impure and forces them into life-or-death traps, the idea being that if they survive they'll see how easily their lives could end and become better people. he sees it as doing the world a service. the movie itself follows 2 intertwined plotlines: a group of detectives trying to identify the jigsaw killer, and 2 men (dr lawrence gordon, a surgeon, and adam faulkner-stanheight, a photographer) who are trapped together, with the instructions to murder the other man to escape. the entire movie rotates around the identity of the jigsaw killer, and the 2 men trying to find a way of escaping without killing each other. it's a lot of fun, incredibly impressive given the budget, and the ending made me audibly gasp. it's incredible. (also, for bonus points: there's a clip somewhere online called "saw 0", which is the short film that they used to pitch the movie. it's a funky lil extra.) [TW: self harm (on and off screen), torture (it's... it's a saw movie), kidnapping, threats towards children, flashing lights, general trauma]
the texas chainsaw massacre (1974) & the texas chainsaw massacre 2 (1986):
for the sake of transparency, i'm not a super mega texas chainsaw fan. it was one of those movies that was hyped up so much to me that i wasn't as scared as i thought i'd be by it - i remember as a little kid i thought it was real, bc i mentioned the title once and my whole family tensed up and told me not to talk about it. but anyway, general plot synopsis: a group of people are driving through texas, run out of fuel, and end up wandering into the home of the sawyer family, a bunch of chainsaw-wielding cannibals. one of the sons, bubba, makes masks out of the skin of his victims, earning the nickname leatherface. it's a lot of intense, loud noises and long tense scenes and genuinely revolting moments. the sequel is a bit more comedic and slashery in comparison. [TW: cannibalism, mutilation, self harm (brief), kidnapping, slaughterhouse noises are used in replacement of a soundtrack, real human bones were used as props, shit like that]
a nightmare on elm street (1984):
another certified classic! freddy kreuger isn't my favourite slasher, but this movie's pretty damn scary. basically, a group of teens are discussing their dreams and figure out they've had the same nightmare - a man with knives for fingers hunting them down and trying to kill them. it becomes clear to them that if they die in the dream, they'll die in real life too, and the killer they face in their dreams is somehow relevant to their pasts in a way they don't remember. [TW: child death (the main cast are teens), lots of unreality (in dream sequences), implied p^dophilia, repressed childhood trauma]
behind the mask: the rise of leslie vernon (2006):
another comedic one! this is a comedic mockumentary set in a world where slashers are real, and following the story of leslie vernon, a young man who wants to become one. he enlists a news team to make a documentary about his uprising, and along the way ends up legitimately becoming close w them and enjoying their company - which is a bit of an issue, bc leslie still plans on killing people. it sorta seamlessly shifts between comedic mockumentary and genuine slasher movie, and has some moments that genuinely break my heart. (also, if you like leslie and want more of him, he has his own comic series!) ((also also!! one of the side characters is strongly implied to be billy, the killer from black christmas!!)) [TW: there's a discussion at some point about leslie being mentally ill and having been treated for it in the past, though i can't remember the specifics of that reveal super clearly. fire.]
us (2019):
holy shit this movie. i cannot recommend this movie enough. if you choose only 1 movie to watch from this whole list, i hope it's us, bc Holy Fucking Shit this movie is underrated. basically, it comes from the idea that our shadows are their own sentient people, who are mirror images of us and yet forced to live beneath us; this movie is what happens when they get tired of that, and try to take our place. it's a worldwide uprising of people's shadows trying to kill them, and it's fucking badass as all hell - it even has some rlly strong comedic moments mixed in w all the family feels and horror! it's also directed by jordan peele, an amazing black director, and the main characters are primarily black (which i think is worth mentioning, bc i rarely see horror movies fronted by poc!!). [TW: kidnapping, child endangerment, general eerie uncanny-valley kinda situations, child death, paranoia-inducing shit, slight unreality]
warm bodies (2013):
this is a weird one so bare with me: horror romcom. romeo and juliet, except romeo's a zombie. i'm not kidding. that's the plot of the movie. it's fun YA teen romcom bullshit, but the protagonist is a sentient zombie man who regularly eats people's brains. it's not exactly scary imo, but it's still classed as horror and i love it dearly, so i'm including it anyway. [TW: sorta-cannibalism? (he's a zombie sooo) - i can't remember anything else tbh!]
sweeney todd: the demon barber of fleet street (2007):
musical movie!!! benjamin barker comes back to london after years in prison under the new alias "sweeney todd", in order to seek revenge on the man who got him wrongfully arrested in a ploy to steal his wife and daughter away from him. he ends up working as a barber above mrs lovett's pie shop and, in a fit of rage, murders one of his customers. he and mrs lovett figure out a deal: he kills any customers whom he thinks deserve it, and mrs lovett uses their meat in her pies. complete with spooky murder duets and ballads about classism! [TW: cannibalism, implied p^dophilia, mentions of rape, attempted suicide, fire, classism, manipulative relationships]
shawn of the dead (2004):
another horror comedy one!! may or may not be a dawn of the dead parody, but i've still never seen dawn of the dead and i understood it perfectly, so. very british, sorta buddycop-esque comedy set in a zombie apocalypse, with the occasional heartbreaking scene. the main characters are completely normal people and also not smart. it's a fun time. [TW: parental death (it took me 10 tries to get through this movie as a kid), alcohol]
thir13en ghosts (2001):
a family inherit an artistic glass house from their eccentric uncle. upon arriving, it turns out he's been using the house to trap vengeful spirits in the basement, which are only visible when wearing special glasses to see them. it's got tons of cool ghosts, a pretty unique concept, and matthew lillard covered in blood: what more could you ever need? [TW: lots of flashing lights, nudity (non-sexual), child death, i know i put a general gore warning but this movie has A Lot Of Gore iirc so it's worth saying again]
jennifer's body (2009):
local wlw teen is turned into a demon and spends her time having sex with and consequently killing her male classmates, all whilst having a flirtatious relationship w her best friend. lots of megan fox being cool as fuck [TW: ok admittedly it's been a long time since i've seen this movie, so i don't remember a lot, but off the top of my head: emeto, vague (off-screen) nsfw, demonic possession]
(honourable mention to the chucky franchise, bc i never shut up abt it, but child's play and cult of chucky both include a lot of psych ward shit off the top of my head, so if ur interested in that franchise at all, i'd skip those 2 and/or read a plot synopsis instead)
#THANK U FOR ASKING feel free to talk to me abt horror movies literally any time#if i think of any more later i'll reblog this n add em but i've been typing this answer for long enough now bvhcjcbvh#ask#horror tag#genderfluidsheik#HOPEFULLY I INCLUDED THE RIGHT WARNINGS FOR EVERYTHING;;;#if anyone knows any i missed pls lmk
