“Zuuuuko!”

Zuko’s hand holding the brush freezes, feeling caught and then immediately feeling bad for that.

Sokka hobbles into the library, the sound of his crutches getting louder until he turns the corner of a bookshelf and flashes Zuko a grin.

“There you are. Suki told me you’d be here somewhere. If I didn’t know better I’d say you were avoiding me,” he says.

It’s a good thing he’s distracted by looking at the items on the shelves, otherwise he might catch the guilty look on Zuko’s face.

“I just needed a change of scenery,” he says, looking back down at the scrolls he’s studying. It’s from a pile of reading material Iroh suggested he get familiar with. Iroh hasn’t left for Ba Sing Se yet, and he hasn’t said when he will, but Zuko already feels the overwhelming weight of his absence and he’s trying to get used to not needing him.

...Instead of spending time with him while he can still ask him questions in person and get his infuriatingly useful advice.

Zuko sighs. It made more sense in his head this morning. He reaches up and takes the crown piece out of his hair, feeling its weight more heavily. He places it on the desk.

“A change of scenery?” Sokka’s eyes light up when Zuko meets them. “Well, how about outside? I found this pond with the cutest turtleducks—“

Zuko hasn’t found it in him to go back there yet. He grimaces and Sokka notices.

“Outside is a no go then. Well, there’s other offices than the Fire Lord’s study, maybe you just need to try something else—“

“Sokka—“

“Or maybe we are still thinking too small. There are so many rooms in this palace, let me help you choose the perfect— shit.”

Zuko jumps to his feet. In his excitement, Sokka had gestured with one of his crutches and lost his balance, stumbling into the bookshelf with Zuko catching him right before he can fall to the floor.

“Sokka.” Zuko grits his teeth, his tone sharper than he intended. “Stop trying to help me. It’s hurting you,” he says quietly. This is far from the first time Sokka has tracked Zuko down or tried to find work to do instead of taking the time to heal. “You need to rest.”

Sokka looks hurt, and Zuko suddenly realizes how close they’re standing. His hands are still on Sokka’s waist to steady him even though he probably doesn’t need the support anymore. He takes a step back, hands falling to his sides.

“Sorry,” Sokka says, voice just as quiet. It feels…intimate, the two of them speaking quietly in the secluded corner of the library. “I just…I feel so useless. After months of constantly having a purpose, of knowing I can always find something to do to help, it feels impossible to just lie in bed all day. And you’re here trying to run a whole nation alone, Zuko.“

“I’m not alone," Zuko says automatically, but it sounds like a lie even to himself.

At the look Sokka gives him, he's not buying it either.

“I mean, it would probably be helpful to have some company,” Zuko admits. It’ll probably take him longer, sure, but maybe it won’t feel so painfully lonely. “Or you could help me interpret some of this handwriting.”

Sokka’s eyes light up. “Now that, I can do. You better get used to reading messy handwriting, though, otherwise we’re going to have a hard time keeping in touch through letters once I go back home,” Sokka tells him.

Zuko blinks in surprise, then smiles. “I can do that. Come on, let’s go do this outside. I’ve been meaning to revisit that pond you mentioned.”

omg as a northerner PLEASE elaborate on southern zongzi. I hate the stuff up here but didn’t know there was a difference

oh my GOD okay I have a huge bias for southern zongzi even though I am also a northerner 💀 mostly bc I grew up being fed southern ones by my mom and grandparents who're from 彰化, but my dad keeps insisting he likes northern ones more

anyway the main difference between northern and southern zongzi is that northern ones are cooked before they're wrapped, then steamed, which means they taste like ass and are unflavored little fuckers that fall apart too easily. my favorite way to insult them is describing them as a hybrid between a 3d printer and 油飯 bc they will never be real zongzi in my heart <3

southern zongzi is prepared by wrapping uncooked glutinous rice along with any other fillings and seasonings then boiled until they're done, and they taste WAYY better in terms of texture and flavor, and they have salty egg yolks (loml). if you ever get the chance to try southern zongzi please do, it'll improve your opinion of them so much

a thing I noodled up based on @ablueeyedarcher's shifterverse AtLA AU setting. The only needed context is that Zuko's other side is a fire ferret, and Sokka's is a fucking huge wolf.

Ozai hasn't settled into his new.... living arrangements (temporary living arrangements, he keeps forcefully insisting in the privacy of his own mind) for very long. He can't sense the sun the way he used to, can't feel the crawl of time as measured by Agni's looping path, but there is at least enough light that falls through what passes as a window high up on the wall of his cell that he can make a close enough guess. His generous (traitorous) son had the decency to face a Child of Agni to the South. 

It's been a few days at least, maybe even a full week by his estimation, when he's jolted out of sleep by a distinct sound. Keys turning in the lock of his cell door. Ozai sits up, takes a moment to compose himself, smoothing down the plain prison robes he's been dumped into, then rises to meet his loyal subject.

"I was expecting you soon--" his greeting dies on his tongue. Ozai does not find Azula standing in the doorway. Neither is there a general, no dedicated council member or magistrate. Not even a lowly clerk. Instead he's surprised to find the Avatar's obnoxious Watertribe pet. He's leaning against the wall opposite the cell, the door of which stands wide open. The peasant casually flips the key around his fingers as he fixes Ozai with a cold, blank stare.

There's something in his other hand but Ozai can't tell what it is. Metal-- gold, twisted and misshapen. Ozai narrows his eyes. The Watertribe seems content to let him marinate in the uncertainty of their shared silence. Finally Ozai’s mounting intrigue gets the better of his judgment. 

“Did the Avatar send you to taunt me,” he asks.

"No." 

"My son?"

"No."

"Your chief, then."

"Just me.”

He's strangely reticent. A few days ago this boy wouldn't shut up the entire airship flight back to the Fire Nation capital. Now he stands and watches Ozai with an unnerving intensity. There's an open door and a wide gap of freedom between them. Ozai can see that the teen's leg is still well bandaged, though he's not aided by any crutch or cane at the moment. He could bolt and make a bid for freedom easily. This knowledge isn't comforting. Rather, it feels like a trap. He narrows his eyes at the boy and asks, "Why are you here?"

The watertribe answers him by throwing the scrap of metal down onto the floor between them. It lands in the sliver of morning light Agni has painted on the floor, and now Ozai can recognize it for what it is, despite its extremely crushed state: the animal cage that sat on his desk. It had sat on his desk for years and no one questioned it.

"Aang would be really sad if I culled you in your cage like you deserve, so I'm going to give you the fighting chance you never gave him. The way is clear. There's a weapon rack in the guard barracks." The Watertribe's lips peel back from his teeth in what could be called a smile if one was very generous and used the term loosely. Dawn light glints off his large, sharp eye teeth. Ozai feels fear hollowing out his stomach, and adrenaline hits his veins like ice water. "You have a twenty second head start. I suggest you run.”

I’m pretty good at remembering sequences of numbers/words. I can read things that are really small. I’m really good at finding buried information on the internet also (not in a creepy way like in a discontinued blender parts for sale way).

I read a lot of fanfiction and watch the same tv episodes over and over. I also like finding tunnels/cool underground things in the old part of my city

Nine People You'd Like To Get To Know Better

I was tagged by @transboyzuko, and it's been a minute since I've done anything like this so here goes:

Three Ships: RMS Olympic, RMS Titanic, HMHS Britannic. The only three Olympic-class ocean liners ever built by Harland & Wolff for the White Star Line. Titanic's story is well-known, of course. Britannic was a hospital ship in World War I until she hit a mine in the Aegean and sank. Olympic's career lasted 24 years before she was retired and sold for scrap. Why do I know this? Because I have a morbid fascination with maritime disasters.

First Ever Ship: Heero Yuy/Duo Maxwell. I grew up watching Mobile Suit Gundam Wing on Toonami, and these boys were my bias. I still hold this fic up as one of the best I've ever read. Although, thinking about it, my first actual ship was probably Sirius Black/Remus Lupin via The Shoebox Project by dorkorific and ladyjaida, which I first read on Livejournal. But that was less something I actively shipped and more a ship I actively enjoyed.

Last Song: Hypomania, by Coping Method. My music taste currently vacillates between dance pop/electronica and heavy metal.

Last Film: Uh. Fuck, I dunno. I don't watch a lot of movies anymore. I did do a double Barbenheimer over the summer, though.

Currently Reading: So This Is Ever After by F. T. Lukens and Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson, but progress has been slow. Just prior to starting them both I devoured the Simon Snow trilogy, though, so maybe I just have poor time management skills.

Currently Watching: myself age by steady increments. I also don't watch a lot of TV or streaming series, although that's less from lack of desire to watch and more from being busy with other things. Well, I have been watching Money, Explained, but that's for work and does not therefore count.

Currently Consuming: I'm between hyperfixations at the moment. I have been working my way through Bret Devereaux's collected blog posts on the Battle of Helm's Deep to cope.

Currently Craving: rice. And the next part of Dog's In Love 2. But I can get rice.

Sandbox games. I mostly play TS4 and chess. If you're bad enough at chess, it's a sandbox game.

Hammerhead slugs. I don't even think we have them here, but I'm too afraid to google. Honestly, I don't wanna know.

Autumn. The sky is such a nice blue and it means summer is fucking over!

From Brazil, I'm gonna be boring: feijoada. But, like, properly made feijoada -- with pork ears, tail, feet, more than one kind of sausage etc. And LOADS of garlic in the kale salad.

What's your favorite drink (if you drink alcohol, alcoholic and non-alcoholic)?

My go to is gin tonic, but I'll drink anything gin. Non-alcoholic, matte leao (yes, the gross one with too much sugar that got even worse after Coca-Cola bought it).

Do you give your pets random table scraps?

Yes and no. If it's something he can eat, I'll give him the scraps in a slow feeder toy. When we're at my mother's, she spoils him rotten though.

1.) Are you named after anyone?

Nope. My parents nearly called me Isabella but they chose Sofia last minute (I’m glad they did bc it’s Portuguese and there’s also like a million Isabellas.)

2.) When was the last time you cried?

Thursday last week bc I watched a movie in class that I didn’t expect to be triggered by but Oh Well.

3.) Do you have kids?

I don’t even have a job 😭

4.) What sports do you play/have played?

I’m absolutely terrible at every conceivable sport and hate it with a passion but I did play netball for like, six years when I was really young. Still shit at it tho lol.

5.) Do you use sarcasm?

When I need to, yes. But not if I know it’s gonna upset someone.

6.) What’s the first thing you notice about people?

Their eyes. I don’t know why it’s so random but I’m always drawn to eyes, maybe it’s because they’re the window to the soul or maybe it’s bc that’s the centre of the face and I’m scared shitless of first impressions and always think about Eye Contact.

7.) What’s your eye colour?

Green but it shifts from forest green when I wear dark green clothes to lighter green when I wear (shocker) lighter green clothes.

8.) Scary movies or happy endings?

I cannot be paid or coerced to watch anything vaguely scary so I’m strongly on the happy endings side. I just want my fictional characters to have good lives man 😭😭

9.) Any talents?

Well, I am a bit of an artist. That’s quite underground though, I’m not sure if people know? (I’m not funny) No but seriously I draw, sing, act, write, play3 instruments, I can do accents? If that counts lol. My friends say my ability to be nice to anyone is a talent, which is sweet so I’ll add it :)

Drawing, singing, writing fanfic (guilty pleasure), reading fanfic, playing instruments, history facts (yes I’m a nerd shut up)

Never had one :’)

5’7 and still getting taller

English english english I knoWW we all hate writing essays but uh. I don’t? It’s kinda fun actually 😭 and I like analysing poems? Uh. My English teacher is a gift to the earth so maybe that’s why

15.) Dream job?

Psychologist. I’ve always wanted to help people (especially teens) with whatever they’re going through, neurodivergent people, queer and trans people. Literally anyone who I can help. I know it’s a hard job, and it takes a lot of work, but honestly? Seeing people happier or if I can help at least one person would be worth it :)
