Safe

In honor of trans day of visibility, I present a Nonbinary Kaz drabble. (I meant to write for the other crows, too, but this is all I was able to get done today soooooo another time for the others) cw: Kaz’s backstory, mentioned familial deaths, mentions of injuries, dysphoria, mentions of unintentional misgendering, denial of identity(???)

Kaz learned early that there was no such thing as safe.

Their father tried. He tried in everything: keeping up with the farm, maintaining the house, ensuring there was food on the table every night, raising his two kids. But even in the very beginning, he couldn’t protect them from everything. Kaz never knew the comforting warmth of their mother’s embrace – or, if they did, they could never remember it – because she passed before they could meet. And from the moment Kaz could stand, they were surrounded by danger. The barn cat might turn and scratch or bite at any moment. (They were only five when they learned that lesson, the scar along their right knuckle a permanent reminder.) The oldest horse would eventually spook, rocks and dirt were bound to give way beneath their feet as they climbed a hill, a fall could scrape a knee or break a bone.

A plow might overturn at any moment. A plague might hit with little warning.

Kaz has known, for as long as they could remember, that with life comes risk. Heartache. Pain. But it goes beyond accidents and death and the con artists, thieves, murderers, slavers… It goes beyond bruises and blood and broken bones. Hurt could come from within, too.

Rietveld – and, for years, Brekker – had never understood why a single glance in the mirror could leave them wanting to crawl out of their own skin. Why some words could cut like a knife.

‘Son, brother, boy, young man.’

‘He.’

They didn’t understand it, but they knew they had never been a boy and they knew being seen as one hurt. Rietveld knew they lived in constant fear. Brekker knew that in a world where danger lurked around every corner, not even their own body was safe. Easier, then, to just keep it all to themself. Don’t tell anyone how to hurt you. It’s a rule that the Barrel didn’t need to teach them; one they’ve followed since crawling out of the harbor that night. And what did it matter if everyone called them a boy? They called Kaz a demon, too, and that was no more true.

There was no such thing as safe. It was up to Kaz to protect themself. From knives, bullets, beatings. From loss. From pain. It was up to Kaz.

Was.

But Rietveld never thought they’d have anyone besides Jordie, and Brekker never thought they’d have anyone at all. They never thought they would see this day, have what they do now.

Jesper, Wylan, Nina, Inej.

Reassurances, kind smiles, and open arms.

Kaz hopes Rietveld can hear them now – if only to learn that safety does exist and it looks like this. Sitting, on a cold winter night, with a cup of hot chocolate held in ungloved hands, surrounded by friends and hearing the word ‘they’ fall past their lips – as easy and certain as any other.

Okay so like we know about Jordie and the scam and why Kaz wears gloves/uses a cane, how jordie died, about Pekka being the scammer, uhhh and that's the gist of it? Yeah, dw too much about spoiling it, I'll manage

ah ok so you do have the backstory!!! ok so my headcanons are:

when kaz and jordie started their journey to ketterdam, kaz told jordie that he wanted to cut his hair and bring jordie's old clothes instead of his dresses and stuff to be more practical on the long journey. jordie just wanted to make kaz happy and comfortable so he obliged. since kaz was only like 9 this was pretty much all he needed to pass completely as a boy and those few days in ketterdam before the scam fell apart were the happiest of his life not just because he was drinking hot chocolate and spending time with jordie but because he finally got to be a boy

when kaz changed his name from rietveld to brekker, he also changed his first name to kaz. this was when he decided he was never going back to presenting as a girl

ok here's the big one: you know how kaz's voice is really rough and raspy? you know how this never gets explained? he got a grisha tailor to change his vocal cords to deepen his voice. this tailor was just some random person off the streets of ketterdam who had never been trained though so they messed it up a little, and that's why his voice is raspy.

canon: kaz never takes his shirt off in front of anyone but inej. conclusion: inej is the only person who knows he's trans
