the thing about the queer media tournament that really gets me is that last i checked there wasn't a single mxtx work on it. like not even the untamed made it in and don't get me wrong the og mo dao zu shi books are huge but cql is def more popular among tumblr circles. idk it just really rubs me the wrong way how every single piece of western media that ppl have ever gotten a lil bit aggressive abt shipping with is there and then for east asian media there's utena and madoka magica and the handmaiden and last i checked that was pretty much it. and then for the rest of the world there's next to/nothing but idk enough to really make judgements there.

also since i haven't gone to bed yet, other characters' thoughts on trans-girl-shirou-emiya:

Taiga: shirou is her precious little sister. approximately 130% more jokes about shirou being a good housewife someday except they're not really jokes anymore are they? also thinks it's cute that shirou liked magical girls SO much she decided to become a girl. i know she's not actually that dumb but she does get caught up in her own brand of insanity that i think its entirely possible that she would very seriously tell shirou to be careful around boys, because pregnancy is no joke, shirou. it does not occur to either of them that shirou cannot actually become pregnant.

Sakura: im gonna be honest i dont entirely have a handle on sakura's inner monologue but i think this just makes her feelings for shirou way more complex but in New and Intersting ways but also i dont think she would realize for a long time that "being a lesbian" is like. possible.

Tohsaka: 1000% thought shirou was cis up until she comes over to stay at the emiya household at which point her entire brain screeches to a halt because "someone this pretty?? used to be a guy¹?? huh??" On non-UBW routes she eventually morphs into Halimede

Saber: gonna be honest i dont think saber cares about gender at all, and their relationship would be identical to canon

Ilya: Albrecht told her all about the "son" kiritsugu adopted but i think learning that shirou became kiritsugu's daughter instead (ignoring that transitioning only happened after kiritsugu died) would drive her insane. But also initially she wouldn't even realize who shirou was because she wasn't looking for a girl, so ilya'a first impression of shirou was "random nice girl". makes more housewife jokes than taiga does.

Shinji: the vibes are fucking atrocious

Ayako: is the closest thing FSN has to a butch lesbian. do the math. she wants shirou to come back to archery club so bad for reasons that definitely dont have anything to do with shirou's abs.

Archer: if archer transitioned too, their relationship is identical to canon. if archer didn't, then they're SO mad. so fucking mad.

Lancer: he was already kind of annoyed at having to kill shirou on the first night in canon, being ordered to kill a woman would leave a bad taste in his mouth. like he would still do it but he would complain, the whole time.

Rider: I know that shirou borrows books from her in Hollow Axtaria which is very cute. In this timeline some of those books are Books of Sapphos' Poetry. The dream sequence where she steals some mana is identical.

Caster: Honestly i feel like she would be transphobic. Like it just seems in line with her being awful.

Gilgamesh: if you thought he was sexist before you havent seen anything yet

Kirei: Honestly I feel like he would be happy for Shirou achieving some level of self actualization but this would not stop him from being The Worst

My most cringe prompt: Instead of modern age, the FSN Servants (somehow) got summoned in the Paleothilic, where their Masters are "UNGA BUNGA" people. Like imagine if Saber can't understand what Shirog (Caveboy Shirou) saying. Only Heracles understands caveman language.

(WARNING: MAJOR FSN SPOILERS for people just reading it now) So according to Nasu & Co., Shirou has a very low chance of becoming Archer in any route, the least in HF, with future installments implying that he could become EMIYA Alter instead via Mind of Steel ending in that route. But that does mean it's theoretically possible somewhere in the multiverse. Therefore, I'd like to see an UBW "Bad Ending" where Shirou, after years in spite of Rin at his side, becomes Archer. (Saber can be there too if you want but please keep emphasis on Shirou and Rin's dynamic.) Shirou: Become everything you swore to never be. Question if destiny can truly not be overcome. Your girlfriend begins to recognize parts of the man you never wanted to be in you and her treatment of you shifts accordingly. How do you handle any of that? How do you live with yourself and with knowing what fate awaits you? How does Rin cope with everything? What are the first signs, how well does she handle seeing Shirou slowly turn into her former servant? Knowing Archer asked her to help him and she failed? Is maybe a part of her even happy about it because she misses Archer? Just... Post-UBW Shirou turning into Archer.

(Kinda take in the HF route) Shirou Emiya just arrives at the Gate of Hell after his death due to destroy the Grail. His body was the same as the day he was born (no clothes). Shirou, like many other naked souls just arrived at Lake Acheron, waiting for Charon the ferryman to ferry them. While Shirou has ignore the cries of the souls from the Vestibule of Hell and the ones on the same boat with him. There is one cry that he heard: It was Shinji, who was punished in the 3rd ring of the 7th Circle. (Basically a Shirou meets Shinji again in Hell). Kirei Kotomine is Hell's tour guide, and Shirou gets to beat Shinji up for what he did to Sakura.

I keep seeing your posts where you say that Saber is trans, but that doesn't really make sense to me. She was born a woman and just pretended to be a guy. She wasn't born a male and transitioned, she was a girl the entire time. Could you educate me on why you say that?

so like. i think the main friction point here is that when people talk about Saber being trans they mean it allegorically, not literally. those things aren't necessarily incompatible (see Maddy Celeste), but it's less that Saber literally transitioned and more that the way her ascension to her 'duty' as king is portrayed as being for others at expense of herself, how her arc is about not pretending it didn't happen or it saying it was without meaning but accepting it as part of the life she lived, about how living as a man as 'king' and living as Saber the girl are contrasted with Shirou, who falls in love with her despite and partly due to all the Baggage, those things, while i'm pretty sure most trans people don't have the Sex Dragon in them to help them fire sword beams can be read regardless of the authorial intention as transgender in spirit if not in in-universe technicality.

trans girl shirou is becoming a hill ill die on for real; im not quite as adamant about this one but i do think an ftm read of waver enriches his character especially in fate/zero

waver is introduced to you as a character who's struggling against his own lot in life. he's told that he's doomed to be a subpar magus from birth no matter how hard he works. he writes a thesis refuting this and gets berated for it in front of his peers. he desperately wants to believe that the facts of his birth can be changed.

he summons rider, who's a beacon of idealized masculinity. there's huge contrast between them as a pair both visually and personality-wise; they couldn't be more different from one another.

waver is older than most of the main cast will be in fate/stay night, but he's not taken seriously as an adult or as a magus. he's called "boy" by rider. he's a stupid, cocky child who wanted to prove himself and wound up way out of his depth.

when he tells rider his wish is more or less to be taken seriously, he's berated again and told that he shouldn't be so concerned with what other people think of him and a better wish would be to grow 30 centimeters. rider defends waver to kayneth, his intended master, when they encounter each other. rider compliments waver's use of very basic alchemy and says it's better than doing something complicated for the same result. waver shows rider a history book that claims he was very short in real life, and he's surprised that it doesn't bother him at all. over and over, rider challenges waver's own deep-rooted insecurities.

waver is still 5'2 and a third-rate magus at the end of fate/zero, but rider invites him to become his retainer anyway, because what he needed to be recognized by rider as a man was to grow as a person, not to be a different one like he so badly seemed to want.

as an older adult, waver is not a powerful magus, but he's become a respected one in his own right by finding what he does have an aptitude for instead of feeling the need to struggle against himself. he's exactly 29 centimeters taller.

in my ideal version of fate/stay night archer is a girl, it's taking the "visiting your past self now that you're trans" trope and making it "visiting your past self now that you're trans and trying to kill them with exploding sword arrows". somehow shirou still doesn't realise this means she's trans, because the shell of her egg is also made of swords -_-
