New Perspective★
« previous · masterpost · winter fest »
➼ now playing...i wanna be yours
The next day you rushed into Idia’s dorm room asking him to print out the lyrics and music sheet for the song. He screamed, but that didn’t really matter to you. You hovered over him as he made the music sheet and printed out everything else for you. He hands you the sheets and you hurriedly grab them, yelling out a thank you as you rush out of the door.
You run through the mirrors, rushing towards the practice room. It was early in the morning, 2 hours before school started. Normally, you don’t wake up this early but with the festival coming up soon. Really soon. You had to wake up early. There was excitement coursing through your veins as you got Yuuken’s favorite song tucked under your arm. Your shoulder slams into the door as you open it you are greeted with Cater and Lilia on the floor shuffling through their music sheets and Kalim still trying to wake up.
“Did you all just get here?” You ask as you scan the room.
“Like 5 minutes ago.” Cater answers you.
“Oh! Is that the song for Yuuken?” Lilia points at the folder you are holding in your arm. You nod quickly and open it up to hand him his papers, grabbing the rest out and passing it along to Cater and Kalim as well. You sit in a circle reading over the papers, “This doesn’t look too bad actually. We’ll get this down pretty quickly,” Lilia states.
Kalim nods excitedly, “I think we got this! I wonder what it sounds like.” Cater gets up from the ground, “Only one way to find out.” You all follow Cater as you get up. Cater gathers the sheets and places them on his stand, you all get ready and play until school is about to start.
Classes ended and you rush to your club room, leaving a trail of dust as you run by. You were the first one there, so you decided to just set up early and go over notes you had taken on your music sheet. The door opens a few minutes later and you’re greeted by Jamil and Kalim, “You’re early, N/n,” Kalim greets you with a wave. Jamil looks over at you as you both make eye contact, he nods as a greeting with a small smile and you return it back to him.
“My class was just a hallway away, so I was able to get here on time.”
“Oh? What class were you in?” Kalim asks you as he sets down his bag by the drum set.
“Astrology and Divination.”
“Really? You should come to Scarabia for any assignments, we have the best observation room when it comes to astrology!” Kalim grabs you by the shoulder and shakes you back and forth. “Oh, I don’t wanna bother you guys.”
A voice cuts in, “You wouldn’t be, come all you like.” Jamil looks towards you and smiles. “If you say so, thank you for the offer.” You smile widely towards the both of them. The door bursts open again with Cater and Lilia, “Woah! N/n beat us this time?” Cater teasingly smiles at you and you smile right back at him. “We’ll set up quickly then since it seems like someone is excited for practice today.” Lilia puts his bag down and goes to tune his bass. Everyone disperses to go set up their stuff and Jamil goes to set up amps and speakers, you follow right behind him. “Do you need any help?”
He turns to look at you, “No need, you can go look over your notes. I’ll be fine.” You tilt your head up to look at him, “Are you sure? I’ve already looked over them, so I can help.” He looks back and forth between the cables in his hands and you, your hand is already outstretched and he internally groans at your persistence. “If you want. You can hold onto this.” He hands you the cables and you both walk around to the speakers and amps, giving him the cables he needs.
He goes underneath a table to plug in a charger for his laptop as you hand him his charger and the extra cable to plug it into the speaker. He plugs the charger in and turns to crawl from underneath, but once he lifts his head from underneath the table he hits the top of his head. You bend down to see what happened as you hear a groan from Jamil. You giggle, “Jamil, are you okay?”
He’s wincing and holding the top of his head, but he looks up to respond to you. Your faces are only mere inches apart and his breath gets stuck in his throat. Both of your eyes widen at the same time and Jamil moves his head back too quickly only to hit his head once again. You gasp and put your hand over your mouth to stifle your giggles and hide the rising blush on your face.
“Let’s get you out of there.” You move out of the way so Jamil can crawl out from underneath. You reach your hand out for Jamil to hold onto as he gets up. He’s hesitant and doesn’t move, but he grabs a hold of your hand after an awkward pause. “Thanks.” He whispers tugging on his hood and fumbling with the fabric with his free hand. Your hands are still pressed together. You’re both unaware of the stares that are looking your way, they pass knowing glances between themselves.
“Hey! Ready to start?” Lilia calls out to you and Jamil, trying to not chuckle at the growing embarrassment on your faces. You both split apart as you rush over to them.
“Yes! Sorry!”
You head on over to your place behind the mic, practice resumes from what was left from earlier this morning. Practice went on at least till 6 p.m. before you stopped and got ready to head back to the dorms. Your bag felt heavy and your throat was hoarse, but nothing that can’t be fixed later tonight after some dinner and a warm drink. Jamil walks over to you as you stuff the last sheet of paper into your folder.
He taps your shoulder and you turn to be faced with a water bottle. “I’m sure your throat is hoarse, you should drink up.”
“Thank you, Jamil.”
You take the drink and open it, Jamil is still standing by your side. His bag is by his side, and he stares at the ground waiting for you to finish with your bottle. You close the bottle and wipe the remaining bit of liquid from your lips. You noticed that the rest of them had left and it was just you and Jamil together in the room.
“Where did they?” You trail off as you look around the room.
“They already left.”
“Oh. Why didn’t you leave? I’d be fine walking by myself.” You say curiously. Jamil looks away, he’s obviously unsure of what to say. At the moment Jamil wasn’t even sure why he stayed behind. It wasn’t his job to stay by your side, his job was to be with Kalim. To be by Kalim’s side. Not yours. Something about you just made it so easy for him to worry about you, but not the same way he worries about Kalim. Not the same way he worries about anyone. “Just wanted to make sure you’re okay.” Now he was just trying to play it cool, it was obvious you were just fine. He doesn’t need to be by your side. He doesn’t. He keeps repeating that to himself. There’s no point in being by your side.
But, the way your eyes look up at him. The way you worried about him when he hit his head. The way you offer to help any chance you can. It was so easy for you to worry and be yourself around him, that he almost feels like he owes it to you by being himself around you too. He shuts down his thoughts, it doesn’t matter. He’s sure his feelings don’t matter, it won’t matter. Not right now and not anytime soon. So he pushes away the feeling; the way your eyes make him feel, the way your personality is so quiet but so bright, and the way you worry about him.
Your eyes glisten at what he said, “I’m okay. Since it’s just us let’s walk together?”
Damn, he thinks to himself, your eyes are just so beautiful. Jamil tells himself that just this once, he’ll let this moment be his. For just this once, this moment is something he’ll keep to himself. Because he wants to be selfish so for right now. Please, he begs internally, please let him have this.
“Yeah, let’s walk together.”
You both leave out the door walking side by side. The warmth as you both stand close together. The evening sky shines through the window and caresses both of you, the sunset glistens in both of your eyes. This time, your eyes meet once again, and this time you both realize just how beautiful the other is underneath the light.
a/n: I HOPE YOU ENJOY

#11 for Cade + Sorrel
#11: "Wow. You look... amazing." (Took some liberties with the quote on this one.)
“Ah, man. What a rush,” Cade breathed, running his fingers through loose strands of tousled hair. He shut his eyes and allowed the back of his head to rest against the wall. “Didn’t think a battle could get me so amped up.”
Exploud sat at his trainer’s side, thoroughly spent from the match he had just endured. Sorrel knew that Exploud and Cade’s other Pokemon were well-deserving of bellies filled with hot meals that night—he would personally ensure that much. Making it all the way to the semi-finals of the Grand Festival was nothing to sneeze at, after all.
At the end of the day, it really was a battle to be marvled at. The entire Contest Hall reverberated with sounds and sights like Sorrel had never experienced before. The atmosphere from the crowd was electric, and Cade seemed to feed off every ounce of it. He and his Pokemon had put on such a show. Every attack, every movement, every combination had Sorrel’s heart pounding like a drum.
It was beautiful.
“You guys really gave it your all out there,” Sorrel noted, leaning his shoulder against the doorframe. “You should be proud.”
“Thanks,” Cade huffed through a dry laugh. He opened his eyes, his gaze fixated on the hanging fluorescent lights. “We got so close this time, but it still wasn’t enough.” There was a pause that made Sorrel’s heart slow, but Cade didn’t allow the moment to linger. He grunted as he sat upright, rubbing his hand against the back of his neck. “Just have to keep going at it, I guess.”
Cade was tired, Sorrel knew he was. He hid it well, but Sorrel recognized the slight slouch to his posture, the faint haze behind his lidded eyes, the lack of bounce and rhythm to his step, the residue of sweat that painted his temples and chest. It was the evidence of all he had put into that last battle—all he and his Pokemon had worked tirelessly for.
It was a look that embodied everything of who Cade was—everything that Sorrel envied about him.
Everything that Sorrel admired about him.
“Anyway, I look like shit,” Cade scoffed with a click of his tongue. He stretched his arms behind his head and strode toward the exit. “I’m gonna get this crap off and hit the showers. Let’s go, Exploud.”
Exploud gave a small groan of protest before pulling himself to his feet and trudging behind his trainer.
Sorrel crossed his arms tightly in front of his chest, his eyes trailing Cade as he walked past. He wasn’t sure what made him do it, but before he even had the chance to think twice about it, he spoke up.
“On the contrary,” Sorrel started, and Cade stopped, glancing over his shoulder. Sorrel averted his gaze, drumming the tips of his fingers against his forearm. He hesitated, but his words softly found their escape, “I think you look amazing.”
Sorrel didn’t allow himself to stay long enough to hear what his companion’s response may have been. But the heat that blossomed onto Cade’s face didn’t go entirely unnoticed by Sorrel as he walked on by. Neither did the way Exploud chuckled at his trainer’s expense.
The ghost of a satisfied smirk danced along the corners of Sorrel’s mouth.
“I’ll see you back at the Pokemon Center.”
Send me a number and a character(s) and I’ll write a drabble!

Wobbly Interview: Going for Happy
BY JORDAN MAINZER
Thurston Moore Ensemble/Negativland band member Jon Leidecker has been releasing electronic music under the moniker Wobbly for over two decades now. In Chicago experimental label Hausu Mountain, he seems to have found kindred spirits, matching his far out idiosyncrasies. 2019′s Monitress and its follow-up, Popular Monitress, which came out earlier this month, are albums about and by machines, as Leidecker ran his music into pitch trackers and synth apps on his phones and tablets, embracing the errors and randomness that were produced along the way. While the source material on Monitress was mostly improvised, the songs on Popular Monitress are more structured and composed, resulting in songs like “Authenticated Krell”, which follows a comparatively clean synth arpeggio before being enveloped by texture, or “Lent Foot”, where the various instruments trail each other. It’s remarkable just how familiar certain sounds are even if not traditionally instrumental ones, like the typewriter clacks of “Illiac Ergodos 7!” or the zooming notes of the thumping title track. Blurring the lines between what’s instrument and what’s not, and even further, what’s composed music and what’s not, Popular Monitress is a defining statement for both Leidecker and Hausu.
I was able to ask Leidecker about various songs on the album and their inspirations. Read his answers below!
Since I Left You: You chose to write more structured songs this time around before running them through the pitch tracker. Do those nuggets of recognizable structures make the final product all the more disorienting?
Jon Leidecker: Hopefully! On both albums, the main thing is keeping the focus on just how live those pitch trackers are. It’s Monitress as long as you can hear how they’re listening. For years, it was strictly a piece for live performance--I needed to be improvising myself, and able to respond instantly, to really underline just how spontaneous the machine responses are. So the first record tried to keep more of that sense of flow. Large stretches of it are simply baked down from stereo recordings of concerts & radio performances of it. Overdubbing more layers of trackers seemed legal, as long all the voices were following that one original sound.
Of course, when you play a tune, something composed or even quantized, it definitely becomes easier to hear what they’re doing. The exact same code running on each phone will respond in very different ways to the same source audio, and you get a chorus of individual voices. They play a lot of wrong notes, but oddly, if you feed the trackers lots of consonant, major chords, it stops being dissonance, and you can tell they’re going for happy. You hear these weird things, trying to sing in unison, and..the result is just pure delight. Weirdly emotional! What’s a mistake? What’s music?
SILY: How did you come up with the song titles? For instance, is there anything particularly Appalachian about "Appalachian Gendy"?
JL: They’re mostly mashed up references to landmark works in the field of generative & algorithmic composition, from the 50’s up to the early 90’s. The recent push of stories on AI musical tools seems to be about automation and labor-saving, but the field of how to develop tools for more creative ends goes back all the way to Bebe and Louis Barron going to the Macy Conferences on Cybernetics and designing their first self-oscillating feedback circuit.
So while my tracks aren’t really in the musical style of the works they reference--something like “Appalachian Gendy”, which sprung up a fantasy Spiegel/Xenakis tribute, got paired to that stompdown track, and once it did, I added a solo on iGendyn.
SILY: To what extent is your music here inspired by the inner workings of the brain?
JL: Once you get a grip on just how simply neurons and synapses interact, how reassuringly physical thinking is, the electronic music I’ve always found most inspiring often involve feedback systems, self-playing devices, generative music, things that learn rather than settle. Music that helps you model thought. The whole East Coast/West Coast 60’s divide in synth design boiled down to Moog reducing your options until you could easily dial in what you already know you want, and Buchla designing uncertainty machines to be networked together until they approach the complexity of an unknown brain.
SILY: "Synaptic Padberg" and "Every Piano" have moments of recognizable instruments as opposed to alien instruments (strings and piano, respectively). Was that just a product of the errors/randomness of the music-making, or purposeful?
JL: It's supposed to sound orchestral, so I hit my Mellotron and Chamberlin apps pretty hard with this piece. Not like anything remains plausibly real once they're getting hammered by the trackers. That is a real grand piano, however: me playing the tune at SnowGhost Music in Montana. Brett Allen deserves an engineering credit, but I also wanted the first listen to make you wonder.
SILY: There's almost a funky rhythm to "Motown Electronium". Do you envision folks dancing to this record?
JL: Would have been plain wrong to put that title on an unworthy beat. What would a room full of people dancing to this even be like? Maybe in Baltimore.
SILY: Do you think "Training Lullaby" is what a computer trying to write a lullaby would sound like?
JL: Not that relaxing, is it? That’s ten seconds pulled from a five minute live improvisation, just a little burst of fury in the middle. Which I’ve heard enough now that I can sing along to it; so now, for me, it is calming.
I finally had to admit to myself that I’m a fan of the OpenAI Jukebox stuff. It’s right at that stage where their results are still primitive enough to remain a little mysterious. All the context and relationships intrinsic to what humans call music is irrelevant to those GANs. They don’t need culture to make music, they just need waveforms. What does it tell us that simple pattern analysis and brute number crunching on a large enough data set can produce those sounds? They’re training us. I have twelve hours of their Soundcloud dump ripped to my phone, and I play it a lot, though I wouldn’t play it for anyone under four. Can definitely sing along to some of the weirder ones by now.
SILY: How did you approach the order of tracks on the record? I'm struck by, for instance, the chaos of "Grossi Polyphony" following the comparative lull of "Every Piano".
JL: Just trying to show the range, and keep the surprises coming. Perpetual variety becomes monotony so quickly, so there is a very careful balancing act to play between shorter and longer tracks. I like a record where on first listen, any new section that begins, you feel like there are no guarantees how long it’ll last, eight seconds or eight minutes. Even things that sound like they should be songs: no guarantees. I still remember the first time I heard The Faust Tapes as a teenager.
SILY: Did you actually use musical dice to write "Wurfelspiel"?
JL: “Wurfelspiel” is just name-dropping Mozart’s generative piece--again, a real piano, but no musical dice involved.
SILY: The beats towards the end of the album--the pseudo hip-hop of "Cope By Design", techno of "Dusthorn Sawpipe", krautrock of "Help Desk"--seem to me to be far more propulsive than anything else here. Do you see a connection between those tracks?
JL: The album hits you with all these miniatures in the middle to keep things moving, and those three are the last little barrage of them before the shift into the final stretch with the longer, more hypnotic pieces. Can be tough to sequence an album when you’ve got so many short tracks, but it’s also total freedom.
SILY: How did you like getting the Hausu Mountain album art treatment?
JL: Totally family. All the Monitress packaging has always been iPhone panorama mode artifacts, visual glitches not entirely unlike what my phone’s trackers do to what they hear. I gave one of those images to [Hausu Mountain co-founder Max Allison] to work with the cover of the first Monitress, and he sent back this image, saying, “Here’s the initial stage: Your photo reduced to color blocks I’ll carefully render out later.” So when the second hyper-detailed one came back in a more proper Hausu style, they already seemed like a sequence, and this second one was already in place, so it all clicked. Any version of Monitress, the music is different, but it’s always the same piece. I’m really happy they asked me for something. [Label co-founder Doug Kaplan] and Max are just coming from the good place.
SILY: Are you doing any live streams or socially distant shows any time soon?
JL: Multi-location live streams are a blast. The time modulation inherent in all streaming is deeply psychedelic. The kind of listening you have to do when you know that the relationship of sounds together in time is different for each musician involved? I’m learning utterly new tricks, and it’s astonishing just how live the result is. I sat in on a live stream with Thurston Moore Group a few months ago, the four of them in London, and me hooked up to an amp not far from where I normally am when I play with them. And everyone agreed: It felt like I was there, right up until the instant I quit the app.
I’ve been pre-recording some home live sets for Hausu, Curious Music and High Zero Foundation. Negativland is putting together an hour long performance with Sue-C for the Ann Arbor Film Festival in late March. I finished an album mostly recorded outdoors with my old friend Cheryl E. Leonard for Gilgongo, and we’re going to try to a few outdoor concerts, too.
SILY: What else are you currently working on/what's next?
JL: The second album with Sagan, with Blevin Blectum & J Lesser, is coming out in late April. That one took 14 years to finish. There’s a trio record with Thomas Dimuzio and Anla Courtis coming out on Oscarson. Doing a revision of the last episode of my podcast on sampling music, Variations, to incorporate that OpenAI music. Some Negativland releases tying together the last two albums. There are about four of five other albums that might be done, though it takes time to be sure.
SILY: Anything you've been listening to, reading, or watching lately?
JL: This month has been Maryanne Amacher’s collected writings, Keeping Together in Time by William H. McNeill, Ministry For The Future by Kim Stanley Robinson, important even with happy ending. Interview with Karl Friston - Of Woodlice And Men. Listening to a lot of “Blue” Gene Tyranny, Xenakis & Lang Elliott, and last week every Ghédalia Tazartès album in reverse chronological order. I don’t care what anybody says: That guy’s immortal.
SILY: Anything I didn't ask about you want to say?
JL: Thank you for your questions!

The Right Choice | Brendan De Jong+Reader
Requested: Naw - Dis all me. Word Count: 2,260 A/N: I’m not sure this is ANY good. But it’s fluffy and soft. Warnings: Poor writing and sugar-coated sweetness.
Whenever someone talked about their wedding day, they liked to talk about the nerves that came with the putting on of the dress. As though it were normal to look at yourself in the mirror, the white gown hugging your figure and wonder if you're making the biggest mistake of your life. If you were that worried, why would have said yes in the first place?
As you stand there, in your gown, the chaos of the world slows and your mind goes quiet. Everything has gone according to plan. Everything has fallen into place. It's as it should be. Your family surrounds you, helps you when you need it. You had thought chaos would ensue and you would be a mess of nerves, your stomach twisting in knots with fear and doubt, but none of it comes. You are completely and utterly at peace.
You know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that you are making the right choice. You are meant to wear this dress and walk down that aisle and you are meant to marry that man. You haven't seen him, yet. You're still stuck in the back room, waiting for the festivities to start. You can hear the patrons of your wedding milling about and filling in their seats. The only one you can think about is your soon to be husband.
You haven't seen him in 24 hours, but that wasn't that shocking. You've gone weeks without seeing him, considering his profession. It's different, though, this time. This time, you know he's just down the hall, barely out of reach and all you want to do is find him and curl into him. Make the rest of the world fade away so that it's just you and him.
It's because of that that you know you're making the right choice. Brendan is who you are meant to be with. You're not scared or worried that you're making a mistake. You want to get on with the wedding so that you can be Mrs. Brendan De Jong. Your jitters, as your mom calls them, are not from fear but anticipation. There is nothing in the world you want more than to walk down that aisle and give Brendan all of you. He's already had you for years, making it legally official hardly seems like that big of a deal.
When it's time to line up and listen for your cue, you're as calm as calm can be. You're not scared of what's to come, you're looking forward to it. The walk down the aisle is a slow one, the air is heavy and the dress pulls at the ground where it trails behind you. The rose petals get swept up in the white train, but you notice none of it, too focused on the man in front of you. You're so stranger to seeing him in a suit but today it's a different sort of sight. He stands there at the altar, eyes bright and smile wide, looking, not like a hockey player going into battle, but like a man in love. There is a softness to his features, one you've seen plenty of times before. The look he's giving you always makes you melt.
You don't hear the music as you walk, barely notice the people in the pews beside you. The only thing you know is that it's a good thing your dress seems to drag on the carpet and slow you down because if it weren't for that you'd have already run down the aisle and found yourself in the harms of the man waiting for you. When you come to a stop, standing before you is Brendan, handsome as always, with tears in his eyes and one down his cheek. You reach out to catch the tear on the pad of your thumb and wipe it away. The smile on your lips is soft and delicate.
"You look beautiful," he says softly. His voice is a rumble of a whisper, even the crowd can't hear him. That's okay. It wasn't for them to hear, it was for you and no one else. It's weird standing in front of a room full of people, getting ready to declare your love and devotion for one another. They're not strangers to your world, but for the most part, your world is small and private. It's you and Brendan. Letting everyone see that, doesn't feel wrong, but it feels intimidating.
It's only now, standing before him, with all the eyes in the church on you, that you feel the tickle of the nerves start to set in. You still know you're making the right choice, but you can feel the tingle in your fingers and toes, the itch that tells you to move; to not stand there but to walk back down the aisle and out the door. It has nothing to do with Brendan or the wedding, really. It has nothing to do with your feelings for him. It's just... a response to the nerves the crowd is causing.
You're almost sure he can see that as his deep blue eyes watch you. His fingers reach for you, threading through your fingers and squeezing in a comforting way. Your smile is still soft but your eyes relax at the corner and you give him the smallest of nods, a promise that you're okay.
When the minister starts talking, your mind and their words, fade in and out of focus. It's almost as though what they say doesn't matter. It's the same thing everyone hears at a wedding. A canned speech excepted as standard. It went in one ear and out the other, your focus was solely and completely on the man in front of you and the feel of his hand in yours, grounding you.
The kindness and love in his words when he was given the go-ahead to give his vows brought tears to your eyes, but the moment they were spoken they were forgotten, too much going on. You caught words, here and there, his love and devotion to you, an anecdote about the time you met. Laughter from the audience as he made fun of your height and having to get things down from shelves for you. Countering his comments would come later, and you’ll hold him to the promise that he’d always be the one to reach the top shelf for you. You're glad the wedding is being recorded, perhaps you'll be able to watch it later and know what all was said that made you cry.
Even as the time came to speak your own vows, your focus was on him. His lips press a kiss to your knuckles, where the ring he’d slotted onto your finger sits. It’s heavy and foreign but feels like its exactly where it belongs; beautifully nestled on your finger, cradled by his large hand. Your words flow so smoothly; words you'd practiced so much you're not even aware of them leaving your mouth. He’s the love of your life, the stabilizer in a chaotic world. He holds your hand and keeps you firmly planted on the ground. You know you can count on him to make you laugh, to dry your tears, to hug away your fears and to love you even when the mania sets. The road the two of you have travel has not been an easy one, but it’s one that’s worth it and you know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that in this life and the next, he was who you were meant to be with.
The rest of the ceremony is quick and simple. Before you know it, you’re being pronounced husband and wife and Brendan is pulling you against him, an arm sliding around the waist of your dress and his hand splaying, warmly over the cool skin of your exposed back. It’s dizzying waiting for the moment your lips meet. It’s nothing you haven’t spent years doing and yet.
The moment his lips touch yours it’s like the world falls away. All the guests watching you, your mother with tears in her eyes, they don’t exist. It’s you and him, no one else. It feels right like it was always meant to be just you and him. His lips are soft and gentle as he pulls you against him. Your arms wrap around his knock, pulling him down closer to your height because even in a pair of heels he still needs to bend to reach you.
You don’t want to pull away from the kiss, but you know you need to. You want to stand there, kissing him the way you breathe. Soaking him in and letting him be your lifeline to the world. He’s the only thing that matters in the whole world, but both of you know you have to, if not for the guests' sake, then for breathing sake.
When you pull back, the smile on your face is as big as his, bright and happy and stretching from ear to ear. You’re the happiest you’ve ever been, which is exactly how you know this is gonna work. Not that the last four years of your life hadn’t been an indication that you.
You hear the minister announce the two of you as Mr. Mrs and your heart swells. The sound, which had previously been turned down gets amped up, you can hear everyone clapping and even a few of the guys from Brendan’s whooping and cheering.
The walk back down the aisle and out into the street is a blur, it’s more of a run than anything considering you’re holding Brendan’s hand and trying to keep up with his strides. He’s good about taking smaller steps, but his small strides are more like your long ones.
You’re laughing as you exit the church, though you tug on his hand and point up to the sky, forcing him to stop and watch as the butterflies are released into the air rather than rice or birdseed being thrown at you. They’re beautiful. Fluttery, like your heart. Orange like a sunset. He doesn’t say anything but you feel his lips press to your cheek moments before he’s pulling you off to the waiting limo. You can’t help but laugh when you attempt to get into the limo and engulf the two of you in white satin and tule.
“Are you even in this thing?” Brendan asks. His voice is light and happy. His hands move to push the dress out of the way. “Or did it eat you?”
“I’m here,” you tell him through a laugh. You help him to push the dress down and get yourself seated in the car before it starts to drive off.
“Hi,” he says finally, once the both of you are situated. The single word is a simple one, but the way he smiles around it tells you it’s not just the word he’s saying. There is so much he wants to say, but words, at the moment are hard.
You understand that emotion, they’re hard for you as well. “Hi,” you say back. Your voice is soft and delicate, but you’re practically humming with excitement. You really did that. Both of you did that.
In the absence of words, you lean forward, your hand cupping his cheek as you press your lips to his. The kiss is harder than the one put on for the crowd in the church. This one is more passionate. It’s full of emotions that consume you and wrap you in a blanket. They’re comfort and love and hope. It’s a kiss of promises and happiness.
“I love you,” you tell him. You barely pull away from his lips to speak, you can feel you his lips against yours as you speak. It makes you smile.
He pressed his lips against your, this time briefly and pulls back to have a solid look at you. His blue eyes scan your face like he’s never seen you before and he wants to memorize your features and never forget them. “I love you, too, Mrs. De Jong.”
The words, as innocent as they are, as normal as they will soon be, steal your breath more effectively than any kiss. Your heart rate picks up and the smile on your lips is wider than it’s ever been. Your cheeks hurt from smiling so much. “I like the sound of that,” you tell him. The rest of the thoughts that sit on the tip of your tongue are left unsaid as the driver of the limo rolls down the window and starts to talk. You drown him out while Brendan directs him to the reception.
“Do we have to go?” You ask as you sink down into the leather seat. “Can’t we just go home, change and then go to the airport?” The reception was supposed to be fun and you knew it was going to be, but what you really wanted was to just spend time with your husband and that was it. You so rarely got him to yourself.
“Soon, love,” he says, reaching for your hand. He places a kiss on your knuckles to comfort you and it does. “But I think our family might be mad if we skip out on them.”
You can just imagine your parents and the looks on their face. The disappointment is tangible and it gives you pause. “Yeah, you’re right. Alright, fine. But I only wanna dance with you.”
“I think I can do that.”

The Men Beneath the Streets
Prompt: Create a story about a love story involving a mysterious stranger who has the ability to control light.
Sheila Lomux was walking home one evening during late November. Images of turkeys and other festive fall decorations were hung throughout the city, serving as reminders for her uneventful Turkey Day. Sheila felt her life was starting to lack excitement. Now she was out here, wandering the city late at night and trying to find a good flier that wasn’t about the holiday. As she walked past an alley, she noticed there were fake feathers strewn out all over the ground. Looking around for a good measure of safety, she then went into the alley to look around. Through all the feathers and trash, she ended up finding a strange pamphlet.
There was a man in jester-like makeup on the front wearing a top hat and motioning to a show of people behind him. In large words over the top of the pamphlet and his top hat, it read “Underground Circus” with a cooked turkey underneath. She saw it offered a show and Thanksgiving dinner; all for a low price of five bucks. Sheila gave it some thought and then decided she’d check it out. The listing said it was starting soon and the entrance was at the end of the alley. Kicking through the menagerie of paper feathers, she made her way to the end where an open manhole cover awaited.
Lomux was taken aback. Was this underground circus truly underground? In the sewers? She didn’t want to eat sewer turkey… Yet, as she started to turn away a voice called out.
“Heya miss, you wanna see our lil show?”
“...you can’t be for real,” she said in disbelief.
“I’ll give you a sneak peek!” the voice said, light suddenly emanating from the sewer entrance.
Sheila held a hand before her face to block some of the light as a glowing man climbed out of the sewer; a turkey leg in his hand. His glowing faded until it was just a faint glimmer.
“What are you?” she asked with bewilderment.
“Honestly, haven’t a clue. I’m the least weird of our show though. Come on down, have some turkey. I cooked it myself.”
The man of light held out a hand for her. Sheila looked around nervously at the empty alley of posters before deciding to throw caution to the wind. She took his hand as he dropped the drumstick and led her down into the sewer. There was warmth radiating from his skin and she wondered if he had used his ‘gift’ to cook the turkey he mentioned. As they went through the tunnels, she saw more of the fake feathers everywhere. Eventually, they reached a large room where the circus was set up and the smell of fresh food was in the air.
This setting seemed so surreal to her; she just walked through a filthy sewer and yet this room was so clean and had bleachers set up for an audience. The man of light led her to a seat and shined a beam of light from his hand. It shone like a flashlight, ushering her to a specific spot. A well dressed teenager eventually approached her and offered her a selection of turkey leg, slices of ham, scoops of stuffing, cranberry sauce, gravy, and many other things; but she settled for a bag of popcorn. She’d want to try the turkey later, see if it tasted noticeably different or not.
Eventually the lights in the sewer stadium dimmed, Sheila looked around and saw the man of light sitting near the roof. He was perched on the top of an arch connecting to the sewer and was making motions with his hands to control the lights they had set up around the ringside.
In the center of the ring approached the ringleader, who then ran a circle, dressed in a patchy ensemble that looked like he put it together himself. His coat tails flapped behind him, somehow dropping a trail of turkey feathers around the ring. Wildly laughing and waving his arms to amp up the audience, eventually he stopped and returned to the center.
“Ladies and Gentlemen of the sewer!” he called out. “Are you enjoying our… flash fried turkey!? You guys just gobble it up!”
A couple of people clapped and cheered; some held up a turkey leg to show off the meal. There wasn’t much of an audience here, but the ringleader didn’t seem to notice. Sheila looked up to see the man of light projecting a spotlight over the food vendor. The food vendor was holding up a turkey leg in each hang.
What was this weird obsession with turkey? She wondered if maybe she was the only one here who didn’t want a drumstick.
“Prepare to be marveled by our glorious line up of the extraordinary folks! We are the men beneath the streets and this is our Underground Circus!”
The turkey feathers all suddenly stood up and began spinning around the room. Several people gasped, including Sheila, and suddenly the feathers all pulled together into a large ball. Then, with a slight pop of air, a man was standing there with limbs comprised entirely of the turkey feathers.
“Gobble, gobble, folks!” he joked.
The silent response seemed to hurt him and he sighed, but he kept awkwardly smiling as his turkey feathered limbs began to fall apart. Eventually he was just a man with no arms and no legs hopping around, demonstrating his psychic abilities. His act mostly consisted of spinning around the turkey feathers.
There were a couple of other acts that performed, but Sheila didn’t find them very entertaining. There was an older woman who seemed to be more flexible than a rubber band, winding her foot up over her shoulder and then releasing it into a kick so fast it cracked through the air.
Then there was a young lady who ate rocks. She started by swallowing pebbles and making the audience anxious. Then she started to just bite chunks out of large stones. The final thing she ate was a turkey leg. Turkey bone and all. At the end of her act, she smiled and her obsidian teeth sparkled in the spotlight. Bits of bone and rock poked between them.
Sheila looked up to see the spotlight was coming from the one that truly had her interest, the man of light. Eventually he came to the stage and he performed a short performance. There were some dazzling lights and miniature fireworks. He juggled sparkling balls of red, blue, and green. The juggled lights crashed together to create the outline of a turkey. Finally, they brought out a raw turkey and he flash fried with his hands. He offered some of the meal to Sheila and she finally tried it. It was the best turkey she had ever tried.
After the show, she approached the man of light.
“I’m Sheila Lo-” she started, but he quickly shushed her by holding a finger to her mouth.
“Don’t say your name, that’s how he controls you.”
Sheila felt like the wind was knocked out of her.
“What are you talking about?” she asked as she also wondered if the food could have been drugged.
“The Ringmaster.”
“You don’t want to be a man beneath the street?” she asked, quickly deducing he must be under the ringmaster’s control.
“No way. I hate the sewer and these weird shows we put on just to earn about twenty bucks. He keeps all the money from people who buy extra turkey legs. He says it helps hide the real money… From the crimes… “
“Crimes!?” she said aloud and quickly shushed herself.
The man without arms and legs hopped by.
“See you guys next time!” he said cheerily.
“Don’t you live here with everyone else here?” asked Sheila.
“Pudding pops, no!” he said with a chuckle. “I’ve got a company to run!”
As he hopped away, the man of light placed a hand on her shoulder.
“That dude’s just weird. I said we should turn him away but the Ringmaster loves his attitude. That and something about being the best tax break he’s ever had.”
“We need to get you out of here! Run away with me!” Sheila said, holding his warm hand between her cold fingers.
“You barely know me. I’m a better food salesman than a friend.” “I don’t care! I can feel your gentle spirit!” she declared. “I thought it was just five bucks for all the food though?” “Well, that’s just the first serving. Everyone loves to get more turkey legs, it’s basically our bread and butter.” “Forget those turkey legs!” she said. “Let’s make like turkeys and fly out of here!”
“Alright… I can create a distraction and we can run, but if the ringmaster says my name, he’ll make me unable to move.”
“I’ll take care of him,” she said with adventure in her heart.
“Okay, then let’s make it work. Also turkeys can’t fly.” “Shut up.”
They quickly and secretly discussed their plan before putting it into action. Sheila began chatting up the ringleader about the food pricing plans. As the others gathered around to break down the Underground Circus, suddenly the man of light tossed a turkey leg into the air. As everyone looked at it, he then created flash bangs in the air. Sheila knew to cover her eyes when she saw the drumstick.
“John-!” the Ringmaster began to angrily say.
As the man of light gasped, expecting to hear his full name, Sheila slapped a hand over the ringmaster’s mouth. He muffled something, but she put her full force on him to push him out of the room and into the connecting tunnel. Then she pushed him off the ledge and into the sewage. As he splashed and thrashed below, Sheila turned and ran to catch up with John.
They laughed and held hands as they fled from the Underground Circus. After running through the tunnels, they climbed up out of the sewer. Then they stopped in the alley to catch their breaths. The fake feathers were still all over the place. Angrily, Sheila started throwing the feathers into the sewer and laughing. Finally she sighed and slumped against the wall besides John.
“So, what now?” she asked with a smile.
“Let’s go rob a bank,” John said, standing up and glowing.
“What?” Sheila asked with shock.
“Well, that ex-cop tax fraud genius can no longer stop me! It’s time I made this city bend to my rules just like I tried ten years ago!”
“Hold on, this is a lot to unpack,” Sheila said, standing up and trying to clear her head.
“I’m tired of cooking turkey! Now it’s time to cook pigs!” he said with an evil glee.
“What have I done?”
Sheila’s life would be full of more excitement than she ever bargained for.

First Look: The Aston Martin Vulcan AMR Pro
Aston Martin’s wildest-ever car - the track-only Aston Martin Vulcan - has been taken to breathtaking new extremes with a performance upgrade package developed by AMR. Making its public debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the Aston Martin Vulcan AMR Pro sports extensive aerodynamic enhancements and shortened gearing to produce increased downforce, greater responsiveness and reduced lap times - improvements that underline its status as one of the world’s most extreme and exclusive track cars.
Built in a strictly limited run of just 24 cars and delivered to customers throughout 2016, the 820BHP Aston Martin Vulcan was conceived and engineered to deliver the excitement and exceed the performance of Aston Martin’s Le Mans-winning race cars. Over the last two years, Aston Martin Vulcan owners have received step-by-step driver training by Aston Martin’s expert team of instructors - among them Aston Martin Racing works driver and three-time Le Mans winner, Darren Turner. The Aston Martin Vulcan AMR Pro offers customers the chance to further develop their driving skills and enjoy an even more intense driving experience.
The Aston Martin Vulcan AMR Pro’s aerodynamic enhancements begin at the front-end with louvered panels added above the front wheel arches to extract high pressure air and reduce aerodynamic lift. A sizeable pair of dive planes have been added to each side of the nose to help pin the front-end to the track and the huge front splitter has turning vanes fitted to its underside to improve steering response. Weight has also been saved with optimization of the carbon fiber lay-up and core form reducing the weight of the engine cover by 5kg.
Changes to the rear are equally effective and even more dramatic, courtesy of a new rear wing. Now of dual plane design, rather than the original single plane item, the main element of this enormous rear wing features a 20mm ‘Gurney’ flap - a simple but hugely effective upstand on the wing’s trailing edge - which is supplemented by slotted wing endplates that sport additional 15mm Gurneys to maximize the amount of downforce.
The combined effect of these aerodynamic changes is a major increase in downforce, from the standard Aston Martin Vulcan’s 3150Nm to a colossal 4000Nm. This compares to 3104Nm generated by the 2017 Le Mans winning Aston Martin Racing Vantage GTE. The aero changes have also improved the aerodynamic balance of the Aston Martin Vulcan, shifting its center of pressure forwards bringing it closer to the middle of the car (47% compared with 41.5% for the standard Aston Martin Vulcan) to improve traction, steering response and front-end grip.
The Aston Martin Vulcan AMR Pro upgrade package will be installed by Q by Aston Martin Advanced Operations. Work is already underway on the first upgrades, with the first customer cars expected to be completed in the Autumn. The Aston Martin Vulcan AMP Pro will make its dynamic debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed today.
