there’s times where cathy grows annoyed with jamie’s constant work ,  her non - stop - ness ,  but then her eyes get that SPARK in them and how can cathy complain?  how can she do anything but sit back and watch as her brilliant girlfriend writes  &  rants to herself?  ( yes ,  she’s insane ,  but look what she can do. )  she interrupts one of such rants with a little LAUGH ,  arm placed on jamie’s shoulder  –––––––  is it selfish to want to drag her away from her work for just a moment?  possibly.  so she’s selfish ,  so be it.        ❝  yeah ,  i KNOW  –––––  but your dinner’s getting cold ,  if you wanna stop being relentless for five minutes and eat something other than DORITOS.  ❞       she says it deadpan ,  but leans down to place a kiss on jamie’s cheek right after the words finish ,  hoping it’s enough.

bitter soulmates.   //   accepting!   //   @tragicrebellion

she’s been CAREFUL,  measures taken in every step of this mission to CONCEAL the name on her arm  ––––  cuffs  &  bracelets worn around the clock,  EXCUSES made to toni about why she didn’t want to reveal it.  the red room does not care much about SOULMATES  ––––  they train their operatives to have the same level of apathy for the concept,  but natalia has never been able to shake the last shred of hope held there.

it wasn’t always toni’s name on her wrist.  once,  it was nikolai,  russian characters etched with such care  ––––  her first love,  her BATTLEFIELD HUSBAND,  and her first brush with the knowledge that  ( like the black widow spider she borrows her alias from )  that which she loves will DIE.  then,  it was james,  a friend and a trainer and a lover all in one,   but he had DISAPPEARED,  been frozen once again.

and now  –––––  now,  scrawled across her wrist is TONI STARK.  and god,  she hates that.  and now,  NOW toni knows,  has discovered that little natalie rushman was never real,  and natalia’s bracelet has FALLEN at just the right moment,  a cruel twist of fate,  to reveal what’s been there all along.  ( it was there,  and she’d still gone on with the mission.  there,  and she’d still convinced herself toni was nothing more than ANOTHER MARK.  there,  and she has lied all this time. ) 

toni’s gaze is unreadable  ( or perhaps natalia just doesn’t want to know what’s there ),  and natalia is quick to pull her coat sleeve down to cover the mark,  as if CONCEALMENT could erase its existence.  ( if only she could be so lucky. )       ❝  yes,  i suppose it is.  ❞       voice is smooth,  as if a WAR is not waging inside her at any given moment.  pretending has always come easier for her than TRUTH.       ❝  this doesn’t change anything  ––––  i was still doing my JOB,  and i intend to leave now.  it would be wise not to try to stop me.  ❞     ( because if toni tries to stop her,  she will have to fight back,  and hurting toni has always been the LAST thing she’s wanted to do. )
