FULL NAME: armin arlert. MEANING: old German name taken from the latin arminus, meaning "hero" or a form of Herman, meaning "army man" other meanings include: "Universal, Whole" NICKNAME(S): armie, hot flash. GENDER: genderfluid trans male ETHNICITY: eldian HEIGHT: 5'3 AGE: 22 ZODIAC: scorpio

SPOKEN LANGUAGES: eldian, knows how to read the marleyan written variant. PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: vibrant blonde hair, vibrant hazel eyes, some pretty expressive eyebrows tbh HAIR COLOUR: blonde/honeyed in the summer months EYE COLOUR: hazel SKIN TONE: general warm tones that remain no matter the season. doesn't really tan in the sun, mostly just burns before returning back. SELF CONFIDENCE LEVEL: armin struggled deeply with his confidence growing up and it had a direct impact on his performance in certain areas. years of bullying and of comparing himself to others meant that armin didn't always believe in his own potential. however, with more time and after having people actually listen to him and allow him the chance to speak and be heard, it began to grow. it was like a fire growing till eventually, it was unstoppable. armin knows his areas of strength and he has full confidence in it, rightfully so.

These questions are about what you think would happen in a Hunger Games with your chosen 24 characters! This Hunger Games takes place in the arena from the first book!

1. Which ship would be your victor? Would they win together, or would only one win?

I think it would have to be Hosie. Including them on this list sort of dooms everyone else, haha. But Hope is a tribrid, so not only does she have the ability to turn into a werewolf at will, she’s also got insanely powerful magic. Josie is a powerful witch in her own right, and she’s be able to siphon Hope to keep her powers going. They’d quickly overwhelm the humans, and I think they’d make short work of the rest of the supernaturals, too.

I can see something truly tragic where Josie siphons Hope to death in order to get enough power to win. But really, I think they’d protect each other to the end.

2. How would they win? Kill everyone, or a Peeta/Katniss style trick?

I think they’d be forced to kill everyone. And they absolutely could!

3. Who would be the mentor for ships 2 and 11?

I’d say Indra for Octavia and Niylah, as she’s always been Octavia’s mentor, and she has a lot of battle knowledge. I could see her being a previous victor.

For Damon and Elena... I’d say Alaric or Stefan. Alaric knows a lot about fighting, and Stefan would have reason to want to guide them both to safety.

4. What districts are ships 1 and 5 from?

They all happen to be from the Legacies universe, and it’s canon that they’re all a bunch of rich kids being trained specifically to use their supernatural powers. I think I’d put Hope and Josie in District 1, as Careers, and Lizzie and Sebastian in District 2, which is where Peacekeepers are trained.

5. What scores would the characters in ships 6 and 8 get in the training?

Jake and Amy would do well in hand-to-hand combat, but the rest of their skills just aren’t made for this universe. Tragically, I can see them only getting a 4 or a 5, especially since guns aren’t allowed in the arena.

Sansa and Margaery aren’t made for this universe, either. Neither has any combat experience or fighting skills. Does anybody ever score a 1? They’d be the first, lol.

6. How do the characters in 12 and 9 die?

Clarke and Lexa would last until at least the second half of the competition. I think they would try to go into the woods and hide, much like Katniss did. At some point, Clarke would find herself in danger, and Lexa would be forced to intervene. When Lexa goes down, Clarke goes crazy, and she dies in the ensuing attempt to get revenge.

I can actually see Xavier and Montana making it at least a few days, because they’ve both killed a lot of people. But most of the people they’ve killed were unarmed and unprepared. I think Montana’s ferocity would get them to almost the halfway point. Then, Montana would get herself into a bad situation, maybe getting ganged up on by my Careers in Districts 1 and 2. Xavier would flee, leaving her to die. Later, he’d be found dead having eaten the wrong kind of berries, just like Foxface.

7. Which ship dies first? Can be one character or both!

Sansa and Margaery are not for this world. I think they’d be gone within the first few minutes. They’d both go down trying to talk their way out, and neither would get far. At least they’ll go together!

8. Which ship would use the tracker jackers as a tool?

Gert and Chase, for sure. Gert would know enough about the biology of the tracker jackers, thanks to her parents’ unwise decision to keep some in the basement. Chase would figure out a smart way to keep them from getting stung.

9. Who would ship 7 team up with?

If they lasted long enough to find a team... I could see Janet and Jason teaming up with Jake and Amy. They all come from a similar universe and they’re the most “normal” of all the characters. Except for Janet, but she wouldn’t have her powers in the arena, so it’d be more like Earth-Janet.

10. Which ship would get the most sponsors/would be the capital darlings?

I would say Hosie, but they’re both so pouty and emo that it’d be tough for them to win people over. That makes Sizzie the next obvious choice. With Sebastian’s incredible charm and Lizzie’s natural ability to campaign, they’d be favorites for sure.

11. What would happen if 10 and 4 met in the arena?

Oooh, that’d be interesting. I can actually see Zaven and Gertchase making an excellent team of supposed underdogs. Gert and Raven both have disabilities that would make being in the arena for more than a day or two difficult. Zeke and Chase would both literally die for their girlfriends. They’re all really smart and used to overcoming difficult odds. I think they’d team up and survive against the supernaturals for as long as possible. They’d probably be the last “normal” holdouts.

12.Which ship would be the best at survival skills?

Gotta hand that one to Clexa or Niytavia. I’m leaning more towards Niytavia, because they’re the more “working class” of those two ships. Clarke and Lexa have spent a lot of time leading, which also means letting other people worry about survival skills. I think I’m going with Niytavia, ultimately.

13. Which ship would be the best at killing?

I think Hope, Josie, and Lizzie would struggle to kill, which puts them at a slight disadvantage. (Sebastian wouldn’t struggle at all, of course.) Most of them are just kids who haven’t actually killed anyone in canon.

I think Clexa takes the kill trophy - they’ve both killed a lot of people, and they’ve learned to live with the guilt.

14. Which ships would try to go for the cornucopia?

So the supernaturals all scatter to the winds, not wanting to face each other just yet.

I think all of the “human” ships would be forced to, though - so Peraltiago, Janason, Sansaery, Xantana, Gertchase, Zaven, Niytavia, and Clexa are the most obvious choices, since they don’t have supernatural abilities to aid them in the arena.

Jake and Amy would run in and try to find survival supplies, only to be killed by Xavier and Montana. Xantana would then take out Sansa and Margaery, who would try to sneak in under the cover of chaos.

Jason would run for something shiny, and get killed by Octavia almost immediately. Janet would be taken out by Clarke.

Zaven would successfully snatch one of the further packs and disappear into the trees. Gertchase would follow their lead, but not them directly, not yet.

At this point, Xantana would realize that Clexa and Niytavia were there. Octavia would take out Montana, Lexa would take out Xavier, and Clarke and Niylah would grab as many supplies as possible before bolting in different directions.

Octavia and Lexa would square up, only to realize that they’re too closely matched, and they risk dying without their partners. They call a temporary truce and run off after Niylah and Clarke, respectively.

So, within the first ten minutes, we’d lose four ships, eight people. That takes the arena down to eight ships and sixteen fighters!

15. What would ship 3′s weapons of choice be?

Both are vampires, so their teeth are an obvious one. I’d love to see Caroline with a crossbow, a la Alaric. Stefan would probably take up a sword or an axe.

Testify to the Bleeding Heart

Fandom: Who Killed Markiplier?

Pairing: DAtective (Abe x the District Attorney)

Summary: In which an unfortunate side effect of past tragedies comes to light during an intimate moment.

A/N: So while the next chapter of Satisfied kicks my butt, have this little DAtective drabble I wrote in a fit of inspiration back in April, half-inspired by a post @raimeyl made about their sister’s thoughts about Abe and what happens with his bullet wound. Go follow them if you haven’t, btw!

Some references are made to my series Law & Disorder, which you can read on ao3 here , because you may understand this better...no idea if this will be canon to the series or just a fun side piece , but still.

TW for blood and a touch of gore.

When you look back on this moment far later, you will have no recollection of how the hell it started.

Abe probably said something stupid, which is about as surprising as finding a fish underwater.

It is oddly intriguing, the way he throws about his words without thinking first. Where you have spent your entire life hoarding your words and arguments like a warrior hides weapons under their armor, every time Abe speaks, it’s like he throws a rock directly into a hornet’s nest and waits until the insects fly out before running off to safety.

Most times it leads to amusing situations. Other days it gets the bastard stung all over and you end up yelling at him for not watching his mouth—

Ah, right. That’s how it started.

You were thinking about Abe’s mouth, which lead to the memory of that soul-searing kiss you both shared before the world cracked open and swallowed you whole.

Now…

“You alright, Partner?”

Abe’s concern pries you from your musings. He’s standing by the tragically small dining room table (essentially a white plastic square with legs), arms folded across his chest.

You don’t know what it is about the Detective that suddenly makes you brave, but you know for a fact that whatever this is between the both of you?

It’s special. It’s real.

It hurts like a bitch, it burns your veins and cracks your heart, it makes you smile like an idiot, and gives you more hope than anything else in your life.

(You had considered kissing him long before the alcohol melted into your system at that doomed party, if only to keep him from digging his own grave by opening his mouth and speaking. Had you known what would happen afterward, you probably wouldn’t have stopped kissing him for the rest of the night.)

This is what you tell yourself as you approach Abe, stepping forward each time he steps back, which is only two steps until he’s up against the wall.

He’s staring at you with a strange mix of fear, arousal, and...possibly adoration.

You really hope you aren’t about to ruin the only good thing left in your life.

You stop when your toes touch his. This is his chance to push you away. You’ll understand. It will probably hurt you beyond repair, and that will be the final sign that love just isn’t something meant for you, but as long as you can keep Abe in your life, as long as he’s still your friend, you’ll get through it.

“Is there a reason you’re trying to trigger my sense of deja vu, Partner?” The shaking in his voice doesn’t sound like fear.

That’s a good sign, you think. “So you remember this too?”

“Oh, very vividly. Especially once the hangover wore off.”

His sarcastic tone makes you smile. “So you know how this moment is supposed to end.”

Uncertainty lines the exhaustion in his eyes. “I never expected a repeat performance. Considering, you know, we were both dead for a while, and...at least part of it was my fault.”

You still think you’re cursed, Abe?

You think that scares me?

You never understood that maybe I’m cursed, too.

Your hand reaches forward and touches the edge of his suspenders, almost reverently. The article of clothing does strange, gymnast worthy things to your heart.

(No one has the right to make suspenders look this damn attractive.)

“Well, how about now?”

Abe doesn’t answer. He just stares at you with a longing so painful it stops the air in your throat.

Screw it.

You grab hold of his suspender strap and use it to pull him to you. Your foreheads bump together gently. A beat passes, time for one of you to bow out if that’s the case, and then you close the remaining space.

And it’s butterflies brushing their wings underneath your skin, it’s slow heat turning to a boil in your chest, this is all the gentleness neither of you never got to have, a lifetime of struggle and loss and pain, but the two of you have earned this brushing of lips, the tips of his fingers grazing your jaw, your hand slipping to the back of his neck—

You are all hard edges and bitterness, and so is Abe. You both have bled and snapped off pieces of yourselves for the sake of this awful, unfair world.

You’ve earned the right for a soft touch. You deserve to be treated like spun glass, just for this brief breath of time.

And Abe deserves to be treated like he’s magic.

Curse or no curse, he has magic in his touch that sparks through your veins like white hot electricity.

Seconds later, an eternity, a few heartbeats, maybe a million, and your lips shift to his cheek and down to his jaw.

He makes a sound like he’s in pain and you stop. Pull away. Clear your throat.

“Sorry, I…” You step back to give him space but he grips your upper arm and pulls you right back to him. Your hand lands on his chest.

You feel something wet and look down. Your eyes widen.

“No, it’s...I’m okay, I just…” He ducks his head. His other hand comes up to your neck, his thumb brushing gently against the steady thud of your pulse. “I’m trying to remind myself that I’m not dead. That this is really—”

“Um...Abe?”

“Yeah?”

“There’s, uh, there’s blood on your shirt?”

“What?”

Abe looks down and sees what you only just noticed: a blossoming scarlet stain spreading across his chest. Your hand lifts from the shirt stained with red and trembling.

“Oh, yeah, sorry.” He shakes his head. The lack of panicking over his bleeding chest is disquieting. “That...that happens, sometimes, when my heart gets going.”

“It—what? Wait, is that where you were shot?” The observation shocks you into action. You grab Abe’s wrist and drag him to the kitchen. “Jesus Christ, Abe! You might have said something!”

“In my defense,” he says as he watches you rifle through the drawers for rags, “I was a little distracted.”

Oh, as soon as you get him stitched back up and he stops bleeding all over the floor, you will punch him in the face.

And maybe kiss him again.

Barring that doing such a thing won’t make him bleed like a damn waterfall again.

Have a list of my problematic trash faves

Ten characters, ten fandoms, ten followers

thank you for tagging me a million years ago @motherofkittens94 @drunken-drea-district no i did not forget!!!! but i didn’t add gifs because gifs do not exist for some of them also i don’t know how to use this dumb website

1. Theon Greyjoy (ASOIAF) this should surprise no one following this blog Theon is one of the most amazing characters ever put to paper or film. I love him and his entire fucked up character arc and can’t wait to see where he goes next.

2. Toki Wartooth (Metalocalypse) No one reading this has ever heard of this show but it ruled my life a few years ago and Toki is my favorite, he had such a shitty childhood, he is so cute, and he is such a fuck up, and only wants to be loved. If there is a difference between him and Theon, it’s that Toki is a much more straightforward character, which is why he was my favorite long before getting locked in a basement and tortured.

3. Nancy Wheeler (Stranger Things) It’s difficult to pick just one character off of ST because all of them are wonderful but I filled this list with Problematic faves and Nancy experiences normal teenage girl emotions and reactions to trauma which apparently makes her worse than Hitler. But outside of idiot tumblr standards, she is brave and clever and resourceful and knows how to use a rifle and will dance with you if you can’t find a partner. A true hero.

4. Agia of Nessus (Book of the New Sun) Instead of just putting my asoiaf #3 here is a very similar character though she is way less of a fuck up, more loyal to her brother, and able to set aside grudges in the face of a greater enemy. I named half my blog after her because I identify more with the bad girls especially in tumblr-nonapproved series like this one, where the bad girls get more agency.

5. Mindf*ck (Empowered) This comic is another problematic thing I have strong feelings about, I don’t want to go into the concept because it sounds like the worst thing ever (in fact it is the best thing ever.) It also gave me another tragic mutilated character to sob over. Mindf*ck is a telepath whose powers were awakened when her brother (also a telepath) took over her mind and forced her to cut out her eyes and tongue (so that she could only experience sight and taste by using her powers.) She hated him so much that she used her powers to rewire her own brain to become a kind and caring person, in order to be as little like him as possible.

6. Missy (DW) I can’t pick a single Doctor but I can pick a single Master sorry John Simm I’m going with evil Mary Poppins she’s amazing especially in season 8. In 9 they softened her down a bit which I didn’t care for but still. Amazing.

7. Granny Weatherwax (Discworld) There are many great characters in Discworld but the one I like best is Granny Weatherwax because I want to be a salty old witch for a living.

8. Morrigan (Dragon Age) I want to be a swamp witch ok

9. Regulus Black Regulus Black is my favorite HP character and his story was not told in the movies im pissed

10. Talia Winters (Babylon 5) My favorite character on this show was originally this woman who was just breaking away from her brainwashed childhood as part of an organization of psionic fascists and was just beginning to realize that she didn’t want any part of it and was falling in love with a bitter sexy subversive Russian babe when her actress decided to leave the show I bear the scars to this day I never will recover.

$12m TAG – It is listed as an attractive three-storey hotel and beach bar facility, but Tropical Escape Hotel at Paynes Bay, St James, like many other tourism properties across the island, has been on the market for many years. Several real estate companies have For Sale signs posted outside the dormant hotel which, according to the listing, comprises 58 spacious rooms and a colourful bar area, together with a separate dining room, kitchen facility and offices. It is going at BDS$14 million, a drop from its original $20 million price tag. (SS)

BE WARNED! – International investors have been warned that Barbados is “in critical condition”. They were also told that the Government and the private sector are so “terrified” about the consequences of a foreign debt default that Barbados is likely to pursue domestic debt restructuring and turn to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for help. NN Investments Partners, a Netherlands-based firm managing about US$280 billion in assets for a large number of international institutional and individual investors, gave that assessment in a recent report circulated to “professional investors”. The Sunday Sun understands that a team from the asset management company visited Barbados earlier this year before the May 30 Budget was delivered. (SS)

‘IT’S HARD’ FINDING FUNDS FOR PROJECTS – Hotelier Adrian Loveridge says investors looking to get involved in tourism projects in Barbados would have to raise money in non-conventional ways since banks are not lending. Despite a report from KPMG indicating that banks were becoming more confident to lend to the tourism industry in the region, Loveridge says not so for Barbados. “Basically the economic climate is such that it’s difficult to borrow money,” said Loveridge, the owner of Peach & Quiet Hotel at Silver Sands, Christ Church. Mentioning the multiple economic downgrades Barbados had received, he charged that “the established financial institutions, commercial banks and risk capital people virtually cannot lend money to Barbados or entities within Barbados because it doesn’t fit the lending criteria. SEVEN YEAR OLD AFRAID TO GO HOME – A woman who put her sister in court last year for mistreating her three children is at her wits end because a niece is now refusing to return home. For two weeks the seven year-old child has been staying with her grandmother and aunt who live next-door to her mother, but the aunt told the Sunday Sun the child was simply refusing to go back home because she was afraid of her mother. “Me and my mother have done everything to try to get this child to go home, but all she does is cry and run. I don’t know what else to do because she frighten for the mother,” the 44-year-old woman said. However, the child’s mother, who lives a mere five feet from her sister and grandmother, accused them of having “poisoned her mind against me”. (SS)

GOING WITH TOURISM – Banks and other financial institutions in the Caribbean are once again financing tourism projects in the region, even if cautiously. While Barbados is among countries about which banks are more “bullish”, the non-bank institutions are not favouring this market. This was revealed in the annual Caribbean Hospitality Financing Survey by professional service company KPMG, which looks at financing trends and the outlook for the region’s hospitality and tourism industry. For the past decade financial institutions have been extremely reluctant to lend for major projects, whether new buildings or acquisitions. But this year’s report points to a new optimism. (SS)

BARBADIANS DEVIATING FROM GOOD VALUES, SAYS GORDON – As Bishop of the diocese of Bridgetown Reverend Jason Gordon gets ready to take up a new post, he is urging Barbadians to get back to traditional values, accusing the authorities of focusing more on profits and residents of creating an unsustainable lifestyle. Gordon, who served as consecrated Bishop of Bridgetown and Kingstown, St Vincent and the Grenadines for the past six years, has been elected Archbishop of Port of Spain. He is to be appointed by the end of this year. During a media conference on Friday at his Jemott’s Layne, St Michael office to make the official announcement, Gordon encouraged residents not to lose hope despite the current economic and social circumstances facing the country. However, he said it was time Barbadians get back to a value system based on traditional values where people are satisfied with what they have and live within their means. The cleric said Barbadians seemed to have replaced traditional values with a new set of “liberal capitalist model” where it was now “about get rich [quick] or die trying”. Pointing out that past political leaders Errol Barrow and Tom Adams “both put development of people ahead of the profits of companies”, Gordon said the same could not be said about recent and current political leaders. The Roman Catholic bishop said what was needed was a change in values. Monsignor Vincent Blackett described Gordon’s departure as a bittersweet one, saying the news of his appointment as archbishop came as a shock since the local diocese was getting used to the idea of him being in Bridgetown “forever”. Gordon will replace Archbishop Joseph Harris who resigned earlier this year. Gordon will become the 11th Archbishop of Port of Spain with that archdiocese having responsibility for five dioceses or provinces – Trinidad, Barbados, Guyana, Curacao, and Suriname. (BT)

FAMILY, FRIENDS MOURN JOGGER - A fun loving person with a love and a zest for running. That’s how Desmond Rowe, her coach of the past two years, described June Sonia Knight who lost her life in a tragic car accident yesterday. Knight, said to be her in 50s, of Grazettes New Road, St Michael, was one in a group of joggers who was running along Arch Hall Road on the Ronald Mapp Highway yesterday morning when she and fellow jogger Dr Yolanda Alleyne were involved in a collision with a vehicle driven by 27-year-old Daniel Haynes of Jackmans, St Michael. A witness at the scene explained a second vehicle was involved and contributed to the accident, in which driver Haynes lost control of his car. The person added the driver of that vehicle did not stop at the scene and that Haynes was traumatised by the accident. (SS)

POLICE APPEAL FOR INFORMATION – Police are continuing their investigations into the road fatality which occurred sometime around 5:40 a.m. today. The incident occurred along the Arch Hall section of the Ronald Mapp Highway, in the area of the Lawrence Johnson roundabout. It resulted in the death of June Sonia Knight, of Grazettes New Road, St Michael, and injuries to Yolande Alleyne of Clearview, St James. We are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this accident, or can provide any information to assist with the investigations. UPDATE: POLICE IDENTIFY MAN SHOT LAST NIGHT – Police have indicated an inaccuracy in their earlier press release. It stated that a man had died in the shooting incident at Silver Hill, Christ Church, last night. The man, identified as Andrew Prescod, 34, of Welches, Oistins, Christ Church, was shot in the incident but is still alive. During this incident − which occurred around 11:35 p.m. at Silver Hill, Christ Church − two females, ages 21 and 29, received gunshot injuries, whilst a motor vehicle was damaged. Preliminary investigations revealed that Prescod, and the two females, along with other persons, were in the area liming, when suddenly several gunshots were heard coming from the opposite side of the road. As a result, Prescod received a gunshot to the head, whilst the 21-year-old female was shot in her right knee, and the 29-year-old female was grazed on her chin, by a bullet. Prescod and the 21-year-old female were taken to the QEH by ambulance for medical attention. Investigations are continuing. Anyone who can provide any information to assist the investigation is being asked to contact the Oistins Police Station, at 418-2612, or 418-2658. Police Emergency number 211, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIPS (8477), or the nearest police station. (SS)

IN WIFE’S DEFENCE – A 44-year-old man, who slapped a barman twice for allegedly making sexual advances to his wife, will know his fate next Friday. Alphonsa Claudius Philip Griffith, of Pearl View, Kingsland Terrace, Christ Church, admitted to unlawfully assaulting Greg Hackett on October 19, occasioning him actual bodily harm. Hackett, who is employed at a Dover, Christ Church establishment, was reportedly sitting on a bench speaking to someone when Griffith walked up and demanded an apology from him for making sexual advances to his wife. Hackett refused which resulted in Griffith slapping him. The self employed man persisted with his demands and with the apology still not forthcoming, he slapped Hackett a second time. Police were called in and Griffith was arrested. “He was up in her face making sexual advances,” the husband insisted. However, Magistrate Douglas Frederick said today he was not prepared to make a ruling in the matter until he heard Hackett’s side of the story. Griffith, whose guilty plea was in breach of a yearlong bond imposed on him by another magistrate on a traffic charge, was therefore remanded to prison until October 27 after he was unable to pay the required 1,500 forthwith fine. STAY AT HOME DAD MUST BE ON BEST BEHAVIOUR – A 27-year-old stay-at-home dad must be on his best behaviour for the next six months if he wants to avoid spending three months at Dodds prison. Magistrate Douglas Frederick imposed the bond on Omar Anthony Monlondon of Perry Gap, Roebuck Street, St Michael today after he pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis. A quantity of cannabis seeds was found in a tray in Monlondon’s bedroom when police executed a search warrant at his home earlier today. “I had them there to pelt way but forgot,” he said in his own defence, while admitting that he was caught off guard by police. Asked whether he could pay a fine, the accused man told the magistrate, “I baby sit every day. I have four children.” Unable to pay a fine and not eligible to perform community service, the magistrate entered into a “gentleman’s agreement” with Monlondon: He must stay out of trouble and not smoke. If he is found guilty of any crime within the next six months, he will go to jail. “I appreciate that Sir,” was Monlondon’s reply as he left the dock. (SS)

BROWNE BACKS NO-VOTE RESOLUTION – Apparently one board member also thinks he shouldn’t have a ballot. Not even to vote for himself. Barbados Olympic Association (BOA) director Trevor Browne has sided with the Athletics Association of Barbados (AAB), even as a presidential candidate, having agreed that BOA board members shouldn’t be allowed to vote at Wednesday’s elections. Browne made the case in a press statement yesterday after the AAB tabled a resolution to suspend the voting rights of the BOA’s 11 directors so as to avoid any one candidate starting with a possible 11-vote advantage. “Careful study of the resolution indicates that it calls for a redress of a long-standing situation of inequality and bias which any democratic and well-meaning person would support,” wrote Browne. HOPE HIGH AND DRY AT 90 – The enterprising Shai Hope was left stranded agonisingly short of a third Test hundred as West Indies lost seven wickets in a dismal final session to be bowled out cheaply, giving minnows Zimbabwe the advantage on the opening day of the first Test here yesterday. Hope stroked a composed unbeaten 90, while opener Kieran Powell chipped in with 56, but the Caribbean side found it difficult to cope with Zimbabwe’s spinners on a turning track at Queens Sports Club and were humbled for 219 in their first innings. Leg-spinner Graeme Cremer took four for 64 to reach 50 wickets in Tests, while left-arm spinner Sean Williams prised out three for 20. Clinging to a tenuous 59-55 lead at the Wildey Gym, the reigning KO kings finally put away the series opener by accounting for 15 of the game’s next 17 points in another of those trademark Warrens runs. BAJANS MAKING TAEKWONDO HISTORY – Taekwondo Barbados (TAB) now boasts the country’s first two certified International Referees (IRs), Ogeji Dottin (4th Dan) and Ken Harewood (2nd Dan). The two IRs successfully completed the Pan Am Taekwondo Union’s (PATU) Referee Certification and Refresher Course. The technical events were conducted in two separate competition disciplines; Kyoroogi (combat), and Poomsae (patterns). The courses were held in Las Vegas, Nevada, two weeks ago. Barbados went on to make a major impact at the 2017 World Taekwondo (WT) President’s Cup, as Harewood was selected to judge during the international event. (SS)

MASTERS BACK WITH BUMPER MEDAL HAUL – As traditional as hearing Jingle Bells in December, Barbados’ more mature athletes returned from the Huntsman’s World Senior Games in St George, Utah yesterday clanging and jingling their way out of the Arrivals Hall at the Grantley Adams International Airport. With smiles matching the brightness of the 27 gold and 22 silver in a total of 57 medals, the athletes were met by several well-wishers including Senator Jepter Ince and Senator Reverend David Durant. Manager, former Olympian Rawle Clarke, could not hide his joy over the team’s performance. “This year, we were represented by a number of athletes who would have placed second and third in the past at the national level because the first placed athletes had qualified for another event in Alabama which clashed with the Senior Games. They missed the Senior Games which disqualified them from going to Utah. (SS)

TALMA BOOK GOES BEYOND THE SURF – Brian “De Action Man” Talma’s book Brain Smiles Life Sings: The Last Of The Bronze Class will highlight a matter seldom touched in Barbados. The book will include a chapter called Different Rules For Different Fools, which will examine the discrimination Talma says he experienced as a result of looking different and being a surfer in the broader society of Barbados. “We have a massive problem in Barbados. Race is a big issue. Even my children who look white are, like, ‘Daddy, I don’t feel comfortable’. My children are, like, ‘Should we be white or black?’ I think everyone should see eye to eye; everyone should be able to communicate despite their race,” he said. During an interview with Saturday Sun Sport recently, Talma said the autobiographical account, expected to be released by next year’s Beach Culture World Tour, will uncover the realities of being mixed race, as well as exploring the themes of discrimination, belonging, family life and overcoming in the midst of hardships. That was the advice from millennial class valedictorian Zachary Phillips, who delivered the address on behalf of the 2017 graduating class at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill, yesterday morning. Phillips, who earned a Bachelor of Laws (first class honours), urged the graduates to do more than just collect the larger pay cheque. Though rejoicing in the fact that they all made it as a group, Phillips reminded them that graduation was not the end of their journey. He asked that as they embark on the path to their own success they do not forget to bonds they formed, and he encouraged them to work towards the success of “our islands in the sun”. (SS)

MAS IN THE GAP – St Lawrence Gap was alive with the sweet sounds of carnival yesterday afternoon. The sun was hot, the music hotter and the 200-plus people who wined their way through the Gap and on to Sandals Resort had a blast. There was something in the music that drew workers from the various hotels, guest houses and resorts along the stretch out from their stations to take in the rainbow of colour and the merriment. The tug of the, at first, distant sound was so powerful that the tourists who came out to get a glimpse of the mini carnival and locals alike waited long minutes in the sun and in the few cool spots before they spotted the music truck, with Jamar Browne on the wheels of steel, followed closely by the revellers.
