MWW Artwork of the Day (1/25/23) Limbourg Brothers (Dutch, fl. 1385–1416) Les Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry: Fall and the Expulsion from Paradise (c. 1416) Tempera on vellum, 29.4 x 21 cm. Musée Condé, Chantilly
The picture has no frame, the border of the whole representation being provided by the wall of Paradise. It is from this frame that Adam and Eve have to enter a world which has no boundaries, in which the very shores of the sea vanish, apparently turning into clouds in the infinity of space. Although the ground of the Garden of Eden is stretched behind the figures like a tapestry, it is not merely a decorative surface, since the gradual darkening of the fresh green lawn conveys spatiality. In fact the hardly discernible nuances of green seem to lend the circle a spherical quality. The painter's intention in this respect is also evinced by the use of perspective in the delineation of the fountain and also of the gate (for example, the roof of the fountain is seen and represented from below, whereas its hexagonal basin appears as if seen from above; indeed, the latter does not turn as steeply into the plane of the picture as does the ground itself).

Sleeping Beauty (1959, Clyde Geronimi, Eric Larson, Wolfgang Reitherman and Les Clark)
11/02/2024
Sleeping Beauty is a 1959 animated film directed by Clyde Geronimi, Eric Larson, Wolfgang Reitherman and Les Clark, made with the animation technique and produced by Walt Disney based on the fairy tale Sleeping Beauty by Charles Perrault.
It is the 16th Disney Classic and was released in the United States on January 29, 1959 distributed by Buena Vista Distribution.
In the wake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Cinderella, the Studio revived a classic folk tale in an attempt to achieve great success again, but, despite the great and ambitious technical quality, the film received a very cold response upon release; such was its disappointing initial gross and mixed critical reception that Sleeping Beauty was Disney's last fairy tale adaptation for the next thirty years (the Studio only returned to the genre long after Walt's death with the release of The Little Mermaid in 1989).
The film is graphically inspired by the Gothic miniatures of the book Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry, catapulting the viewer into a bucolic and medieval setting with a sharp and precise line.
A live action of the film was made in 2014: Maleficent with Angelina Jolie in the role of Maleficent and Elle Fanning as Princess Aurora, Sleeping Beauty.
France, 14th century. King Stephen and his consort, Queen Leah, welcome the birth of their first and only daughter, Princess Aurora.
Before Merryweather is able to give her blessing, a terrible and treacherous witch named Maleficent appears in a whirlwind of wind and, to take revenge for not having been invited, curses the princess, proclaiming that she will be truly beautiful and graceful, but that before sunset on his sixteenth birthday she will prick his finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die.
Princess Aurora, the female protagonist of the story, renamed Briar Rose by the fairies. She is animated by Marc Davis.
Prince Phillip. He is animated by Milt Kahl.

MWW Artwork of the Day (3/9/23) Limbourg Brothers (Dutch, fl. 1385–1416) Les Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry: Mars (c. 1412-16) Tempera on vellum, 29.4 x 21 cm. Musée Condé, Chantilly
March: Sowing the field. In the background is the Château de Lusignan, a residence of Jean de Berry. This miniature, like the representations of the other eleven months, occupies a whole page of the Book of Hours, while the text referring to it is on the right-hand page, opposite it. The lack of border decoration conforms with the original intention of the painters. In addition to the signs of the zodiac and the figure of Apollo holding the flaming sun the semicircle at the top provides detailed astronomical information for every day of the month of March. It shows, for example, the positions of the moon, the times of sunrise and sunset, etc. These precise scientific details are accurately reflected by the painting, which shows the agricultural labours of the months and evokes the light of March sun and frequent March showers (see in the left upper corner the sheep, the shepherd and the dog running for shelter before the rain). The textures of the gently sloping ground differ according to whether they show unbroken grassy field, freshly ploughed furrows, pasture for sheep or dusty roads.

September — from the Labors of the Months section of the 15th-century Très Riches Heures. The page shows workers getting busy in the grape harvest, while above a sun-wielding Phoebus rides his chariot beneath an astrological chart.
