M31 -- the Andromeda Galaxy -- and M42 -- the Pleiades star cluster. I shot these originally in early October and was happy with my processing of them then. But, I've learned a few "tricks" since and am happier now, than then. Just sayin'. I was able to pull out more colour and detail from both including more structure of Andromeda's dust lanes and -- added bonus -- the surrounding wisps of nebulosity around the Pleiades, which I never knew were there. Sometimes re-working is worth the extra work, methinks. #tpo180 #astro #astrophotography #astronomy #clayhausphotography #pentax #pentaxk5 https://www.instagram.com/p/CWpZb3BrtIR/?utm_medium=tumblr

Orion & Horsehead Nebula - This is a reprocess of my data from March using some new techniques learned from @iceman_astro (a processing master imo). Thanks to @optcorp for sharing this as well announcing the availability of the TPO Ultrawide 180! I always struggle with m42 (Orion) because of the core and trying to keep the trapezium visible. This affects how much I can stretch the image to pull out the surrounding dust (and there is a lot!). Using some different techniques in stretching, I was able to keep the core more under control while bringing out the surrounding dust. This process is almost an accident because I was trying two different ways to fix some of the background gradient and I looked up and boom, thus appeared! The first two images are the reprocess, one with stars, one without. The last is the original process I posted back in March. . 120 x 60s 60 x 10s Darks, flats, dark flats and biases for both sets . I have shot this area of Cassiopeia a number of times -- both wide-field, like this shot -- and focused in on either the magenta-ish Pacman Nebula or the wispy bluish-purplish Ghost Nebula next to the bright blue giant star, Navi. I think this is one of my better ones primarily on account of my processing of these kinds of images has improved significantly. One of the big challenges of wide-field astro images is the SHEER AMOUNT OF STARS present. I capitalized that phase because those stars can really shout and drown out the feature that one is trying to present. Witness these two nebulae. #astronomy #astrophotography #astrophotographer #astrophoto #clayhausphotography #pentax #pentaxk5 #tpo180 #cassiopeia (at Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument) https://www.instagram.com/p/CWYUZmWp7ri/?utm_medium=tumblr

Returning to a favorite target: M 45, the Pleiades open star cluster captured with a Pentax DSLR (H-alpha converted) and the TPO 180 mm scope. Two hours of data capture from a very dark sky location in Utah’s West Desert. #clayhausphotography #astronomy #astrophotography #pleiades #starcluster #pentax #tpo180 https://www.instagram.com/p/CU-SyBsF-VC/?utm_medium=tumblr
