What would you say is a great starting car for someone who just got their license

toyota corolla, hands down. you really can’t go wrong with a corolla, cheap to buy, cheap to maintain, forgiving, reliable. even the “bad” years of corolla are leagues ahead of most of the rest of what’s out there

the same honestly applies to the toyota camry, honda civic, and honda accord. if you just need a basic point to point first car that’s what you should keep an eye out for

if you need something with more space, check out honda crvs and toyota rav4s. toyota tacomas, chevy s10s, and ford f150s are good if you need a truck. if you want something sporty get a mazda miata, acura integra/rsx, or maybe a toyota celica

i’m basing all this on how cheap they are, how cheap they are to maintain, how easy they are to get parts for, and how reliable they are. im also based in the US so that’s the market im familiar with. obviously individuals of any of these models might have issues, a car is only as reliable as it’s been well maintained, but all the above generally can take enough abuse to where even slightly neglected ones can still go for really high mileage

when in doubt though, toyota will rarely let you down, especially their econoboxes. corolla, tercel, echo, yaris, all great little cars that’ll go forever and cost next to nothing

youtuber you’ve been obsessed with and why?

hmm. closest thing on this is probably Regular Car Reviews:

RCR is really good at understanding cars in the context of their aesthetic role and their ability to emotionally and socially explain you. They understand that fundamentally all cars are the same. The only things that functionally differentiate most cars is their seating and storage capacity, whether there's any major recalls or failures, and how much it costs. Therefore the meaningful thing once you know what kind of car you want is what that car means to you and the people around you.

Mr. Regular studied and taught literature, and a lot of the car reviews are, as a result, literary analysis. It lands sometimes better than others. Nothing quite like getting hit with a Leaves of Grass quote during a review for the Toyota Yaris.

I think that this is a good introduction to the fun part of Car Guy-ness that is accessible.

Mr. Regular is extremely coarse but in a way that a) isn't regularly shitty and b) gives him a lot of plausible deniability which works well for this style of Posting, each video requires someone who has slightly different opinions to needle inspect a car with.

Obsessed? I have watched basically all the main reviews but I still haven't actually gotten around to their podcast. It's probably the most unusual channel I'd recommend to a stranger.

Toyota Yaris Ranking

Because I am definitely not having a Moment about the Yaris I have decided to create a personal ranking from best to worst yaris model. This is just my personal opinion based on my own biases.

For the sake of simplicity, I won't rate the facelifts separately and instead only rank the entire model generation.

1 Yaris P1 1999-2006

The OG. The cuddle bug that graced the world and said "I WILL get you from A to B no matter what you do to me". Change its oil and it's happy.

2 GR Yaris 2020-

The cool little brother. The GR set out to fulfil the question we all wanted to be answered, "What if Yaris but fast as fuck".

Makes the old TR and RS variants sweat, and even people who previously scuffed at the Yaris do a double take.

Kind of looks like it has this dentist push-your-lips-away device on. Angry hamster.

3 Yaris XP9 2005-2011

As a reviewer put it, the second gen is an example of "sophisticated blandness". It's a car. It drives you places. The interior features are good enough for people who just want to have a car.

It takes all of this with a friendly face. Its circular body refined with a few chosen body lines to break up the shape make for a car that got a participation trophy at a sports event.

It's just happy to be included.

Fun fact: I have that model

4 Yaris XP21 2020-

Final evolution (for the time being). Lost some of the no-thoughts-head-empty charm of the older Yari. Manta ray inspired front is somewhat unique in today's angry faced car world. Wants to look like the GR, but not that much.

5 Yaris Verso/FunCargo XP10 1999-2005

What SUVs could have been. Toyota themselves called this an MPV- Multi-Purpose-Vehicle. This micro-van can bring your kid to school and then work on a construction site on the same day.

Get yourself a Yaris that can do it all. Looks like a stretched P1. What it basically is.

6 Yaris Sedan/Vios/Belta XP90 2007-2013

Looks neat. A hatchback-limousine based on the original Yaris, and spiritual successor of the Toyota Echo.

Same charm as the XP9. Looks just happy to be of service. That's a lot of names for one car though. Like the Echo, it's not available in Europe :(

Other generations of the Yaris Belta drop the Yaris part, being sold as "just" Toyota Vios/Belta which is why they're not on this list.

7 Yaris XP13 2010-2020

The awkward middle evolution. The XP21 also has a wild design, but this is just... no. I don't like this. All I see is Steve Harvey's block of a moustache but car.

At least the back looks neat.

Why the fuck make a small car an SUV. Kill it with fire. Throw it in a ditch. IDK just make it leave. This is an insult to the original Yaris. I want to buy a ticket to Japan and murder whoever is responsible for this piece of shit.

The Yaris Verso was right there. Why not modernise that and release it. Don't tell me the reason I know why they did this I don't like it though.

Honourable Mention: Daihatsu Charade 2011-2013

Hail Mary by Toyota's struggling daughter in the European market. They called this Charade because it's literally just the XP9F pretending that it's not.

So the Alleged Yaris has finally bit the dust....

I've made appts to go to some used car dealerships on Monday in hopes of finding an affordable used car that will actually be reliable.

The mechanics only charged me an hour of labour to look at the Alleged Yaris this time, they're still baffled as to wtf exactly is going wrong with it other than "possibly possessed" and "maybe it was built the Monday after a 3 day weekend" and "Toyotas usually aren't this fucking weird". Next time I bake cookies or something I'll bring a tray by, they're great dudes and have done me a solid. But I'll see if it has trade in value for its parts at least, and hopefully I can come home with a nice used Corolla or something.

At least I was able to sort out a loan with decent rates but yeeesh car stuff is so stressful. I did outsource some of it to my parents, my dad is a total gearhead so I was like "What are the top 3-5 cars in the "small affordable sedan" category that are good re reliability and safety" and Dad (recently retired civil engineer) loves having an excuse to watch car videos on YouTube all week so I have a shortlist of options, and he got to do something he finds fun while also helping out his kid so win-win there.

Wish me luck re the whole negotiation process! Car buying is AAAAAAA but hopefully I can get it all sorted Monday and then have a car that is reliable and boring and practical!

He was still stunned, and therefor couldn't move one inch. Your words were still echoing in his head. "I leave because I love you. I don't want to interfere with your love for your wife. I leave because the pain is unbearable, and our friendship is ruined. I hope you will be happy. Farewell, Bakugou." His stomach churned, and the wedding party was his least problem at that moment. After minutes he stormed outside and tried to follow you. Just as he stepped outside in the cool spring breeze, you entered an uber and drove off. “They are such a dumbass.” he hissed. With all his might, he activated his quirk and chased the car. “For fuck sake that couldn't be real. His quirk wasn’t as fast as it would be during the summertime, and he almost lost sight of the car. Why was he driving so fast? Eventually, he lost the car. “Damn.” he was almost fuming with rage. You can’t leave him, not now. Not after you told him you loved him. He needed to do something. Things weren’t supposed to end like this. Bakugou made a quick pause at Musutafu's tallest skyscraper to locate the Uber driver's automobile. He teared his hair. "God forbid. Fuck," he yelled. He didn’t care about his wife at the moment, she was capable enough of being alone for a while, but all he cared about was you. “Where are they? Fuck. This shitty, witted fucking annoying piece of shit. Must always act before they think.” By now, he had almost ripped his hair out. 

His attention was drawn to a fast automobile. It was your uber's grey vehicle. He was driving erratically. Without hesitation, Bakugou activated his quirk once agian and speeded behind the car. “Heck, is this driver drunk or what?” The car slipped and slid from one side to the other. Bakugou tried to gain speed, to be faster than the speeding car, and he succeeded. Standing in the middle of the road, he stretched his arms in front of him, creating a ball of multiple explosions. With a loud shout, he let go of it "Stun Grenade". With a loud boom, a large wall of fire parted the streets and caused every driver to make an emergency brake. Everyone around got blinded, and the Uber driver also had to stand still. That was his call to investigate the car. Katsuki didn't care that his Tuxedo was ripped, he only wanted to stop you from getting away. He violently opened the door of the small grey Toyota Yaris. But what he found was not to his liking.

The driver was unconscious, and there was not a trace of you, as you just evaporated into the air. "Where are they?" growled the blond one, as he grabbed the man by the collar. The driver mumbled something incoherent as a response. "Get your shit together, villain. Spit it." The explosive hero grew impatient. His hands started to sweat, and a little explosion formed. Bakugou's red eyes glared at the man in front of him. "Don't know..." the driver tried to form words. His hand was ready to blow up an explosion right into his face. The eyes of the driver widened in fear. "Hahaha all frightened are we?" A malicious grin plastered on Bakugous's face. He was going almost berserk by now. "Where is Y/n?" he almost screamed. 

"Who you're talking about?" While the other heroes and police officers came, the driver murmured and fell unconscious. "Pro hero Dynamight. Care to explain what happened?" asked Philbert Darcy, the head police officer of the Police Force. He was an intimidating person, but not for the second-placed pro hero. "H/n drove with this Uber driver to the airport, but the driver was a risk to the public traffic. Besides that, he kidnaped them and is now hiding the truth," he explained as rationally as possible. "Mister Bakugou. I am happy that you serve our country as an excellent hero, but you should be at your wedding party besides that, I only see the destruction of the street, injured civilians, and a hero who acted without permission during his holiday. You are abusing your powers. I have to get you into custody." It didn't take a second to get the chains on Bakugou to transport him into pre-trial detention.

"What are you dumbasses thinking? I didn't do anything," yelled Bakugou as they shoved him into the car. "That's what every villain says, so shut up." growled the driving policeman. "I am not a villain. I am a hero. I tried to save them, but they disappeared..." The police officer closed the small window to the backseat. "Fucking idiots." His mind was a never-ending series of questions, none of which could be answered. Why did you leave? Who captured you? Why wasn't he faster? Why was he inside a police car? He nearly got dizzy from all the thoughts that wreaked his mind. He was intelligent, yet he felt absolutely inept at the time.

The car came to a halt at the police station, and they dragged him out. "Follow us, culprit." The rude officer dragged him inside the coldhearted building. He followed them like an obedient puppy. "That's where you will be sleeping for the next few days." He was then thrown into a tiny one-man cell. The chamber stank of urine and dead animals. Bakugou couldn't make a scene, he knew that, so he sat down and waited for Aiko to ball him out. At least she could be useful for something. He still didn't know what urged him to sign the contract between him and her. She was dumb, loud, and utterly annoying. It was probably the fame and the positive reviews he would get for marrying her. He still wanted to be the best pro hero at whatever cost, but he was getting tired of it. He should have just waited for you, as he had promised. "I am such an idiot," Bakugou mumbled. 

 It took his wife ten hours to ball him out and pay for the costs. She just smiled brightly at him. He knew that smile, she was furious. "Oh, darling how I missed you. You missed the party, but saving people is more important right? These gentlemen were such kind folks." After the mean officer from yesterday opened Bakugous chains, she linked their arms, and they exited the station together. She greeted each officer who came by with a charming grin. 

The drive back home was quiet. Bakugou didn't care. He still wondered where the fuck you could be. He knew you didn't make it to the place you wanted to be and that turned him into a never-ending cycle of thoughts. Aiko parked the car in the bright and luxurious garage. She got her husband outside of the car and guided him inside the house. Aiko stayed silent for the next few minutes as both of them sat down on the couch. An exhausted exhale left her mouth. 

Bakugou believed things couldn't get much worse until Aiko opened her annoying mouth.

"You actually terrified me. I had to handle everything. Our guests were devastated that the celebration had to conclude so early. Our reputation has now been tarnished. "She expressed her displeasure. Her high-pitched voice caused his ears to ring. "Can you shut up for once?" Bakugou growled, and Aiko abruptly stopped whining. He rose and exited the apartment. He needed to find you or clues or anything related to the incident.

He took a big breath outside his opulent home. Why did he have to be so obsessed with fame? Even if he was obstinate enough to track you down, he understood that he needed assistance. He removed his phone from his pocket and texted the person he didn't want to see right now yet needed. Not only for this mission but also for his emotional well-being.

Bakugou: Are you free tonight ? I need help with a secret mission. Deku: Sure. Where should we meet ? Bakugou:At mine, I make sure Aiko is distracted. Deku: I will come after hero work, so probably at 7 p.m Bakugou: Don't do reckless shit nerd 

He returned inside, putting his phone back in his pocket. Bakugoou knew precisely how to get his wife out of the house for the remainder of the day. At least he knew her before they married.  "Honey?" he tried to be soft, but calling her nicknames was the most horrible thing he had to do right now. As if beckoned, she dashed around the corner, a dazzling phony smile plastered across her face. "I'm so sorry I left you alone yesterday. We'll have another day to celebrate, I'm sure. You may use my gold card as a wedding gift to purchase anything you want. " She began to squeal and hugged him. "Thank you, honey bunny bubu bear. I love you." Without hesitation, she got her purse and jacket and ran off. 

"Finally," Bakugou murmured as he sat. You'd been absent for about 19 hours. No one was looking for you since it appeared that everyone knew you were traveling overseas for a while, but he knew better. As a result, he was unable to gather the necessary search team. He turned on his computer, went into his hero account, and began searching for any hints. Because the event occurred on Kūkai-Street, he had to leave her when Bakugou wasn't watching. That is, near the tall structure he was standing on. If he could only recall the name of the building. There were international flags, maybe a Consulate? He searched for any in the area of the Street and Bingo, the Brazil consulate. He could easily hack the surveilance cameras and look for something suspicious. Without hesitation, he did so and stumbled across interesting footage. The grey Toyota Yaris parked in front of an alleyway. An elegant woman stepped into the sunlight. The suspicious woman did the same to the driver, and he stumbled back into the car. The woman picked you up and dragged you into the dark alley. 

He stopped the video and rewinded. He needed to get every detail he could. The woman was dressed in white, not even a piece of jewelry could tell something to gain progress in the case. Bakugou growled. Why you of all people? He regretted not telling you everything that happened. Keeping his stupid plan secret, just because he thought marrying would bring him the fame he always wanted. But now he only wanted to get you back, even if that meant that he would lose his job. He was in denial of his real feelings for too long, it is time to finally tell you. Before he could do so, he needed to find you.

Toyota Apologizes For Cheating On Vehicle Testing And Halts Production Of Three Models – Los Angeles California reporting

The wide-ranging faulty testing at Japan’s top automaker involved the use of inadequate or outdated data in collision tests, and incorrect testing of airbag inflation and rear-seat damage in crashes. Engine power tests also were found to have been falsified.

Toyota Motor Corp., based in Toyota city, central Japan, suspended production in Japan of the Corolla Fielder, Corolla Axio and Yaris Cross. The faulty tests were also found on discontinued models.

Certification problems surfaced at Toyota group companies, truck maker Hino Motors and Daihatsu Motor Co., specializing in small models, and Toyota Industries Corp., which makes machinery and auto parts.

Shinji Miyamoto, a Toyota executive overseeing customer satisfaction, said Toyota began looking into its own tests following the problems at the group companies.

The apparent unraveling of the testing systems at Toyota and its group companies is an embarrassment for an automaker that’s prided itself for decades on production finesse and a corporate culture based on empowering workers to make “ever-better cars.”

Toyoda said the company may have been too eager to get the tests done and abbreviated them at a time when model varieties were burgeoning.

PT Toyota-Astra Motor (TAM) resmi meluncurkan New GR Yaris di ajang GAIKINDO Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) 2024. Model ini merupakan versi facelift dari GR Yaris yang sebelumnya diluncurkan pada 2021.

Secara garis besar, terdapat 4 poin pengembangan pada GR Yaris terbaru.

Pertama adalah varian transmisi otomatis 8-percepatan, yang oleh Toyota diberi nama GAZOO Racing Direct AT. Transmisi ini menjadi pelengkap, mendampingi transmisi manual 6-speed di versi sebelumnya

Bicara soal mesin, New GR Yaris dibekali dengan engine berkapasitas 1.600 cc 3-silinder turbo. Mesin ini sebenarnya sama dengan versi sebelumnya, tapi dimaksimalkan sedemikan rupa sehingga tenaganya naik signifikan. Jika di versi sebelumya output yang dihasilkan adalah 257 dk dan torsi 360 Nm, pada model facelift ini tenaganya menjadi 300 dk dan torsinya 400 Nm.

Opsi Drive Mode baru serta optimasi sistem 4WD GR Four juga disematkan untuk memaksimalkan peningkatan pada power. Sekarang, pengendara bisa memilih 3 drive mode yakni Sport, Normal, dan Eco. Termasuk juga optimasi sistem GR Four melalui 3 mode; Normal, Gravel (Sebelumnya Sport), dan Track.

Postur berkendara juga telah diperbaiki dengan menurunkan posisi duduk driver serendah 25 mm yang memperluas jarak pandang dan visibilitas secara signifikan.

Dari sisi eksterior, sisi kanan dan kiri bawah bumper depan sekarang merupakan struktur terpisah untuk mempermudah perbaikan dan penggantian parts jika diperlukan. Serta perubahan desain bumper depan untuk air flow yang lebih baik dalam mendinginkan mesin dan ATF cooler.

Di GIIAS 2024, New GR Yaris dijual dengan harga Rp 1,15 miliar untuk transmisi manual. Sedangkan untuk varian transmisi otomatis dijual dengan harga dan Rp 1,198 miliar. Ada tambahan satu warna baru yaitu Precious Metal, menemani warna ikonik Platinum White Pearl dan Emotional Red.
